So I’m back reading this series. I stopped for a bit cause I wanted to buy all of them first, then realised that was not very smart so I picked it back up. I started off a little confused cause I haven’t read Vol.2 for a few months but I still love this series so much!

I think I forgot how to breathe when reading this…

THIS MANGA IS SO SO SO GOOD!!

Thankfully things turned out okay in the beginning because if a certain someone would have been worse off then at the end of volume two, I would have been blowing up this review with how upset I would have been! LOL!

WOW though!! Yeah things look up, but that fight Kafka has in the beginning was INTENSE! I read the digital version first and then went on the Shonen Jump app so I could see all the double page spreads in all their glory because these fights/scenes were SO good!

I am absolutely thrilled to see our vice-captain shine in this volume! Funny enough, he wasn't really a favorite, but I really really enjoyed seeing him kick some kaiju butt! (Also Ichikawa's moment to shine with a different character was EVERYTHINGGGG when it came to also kicking some kaiju butt!!)

Also Shinomiya is awesome! That is all.

This series continues to be such a strong favorite!!! The action and tension never lets up and only continues to get better and better! So incredibly good and cannot wait for the physical release of this one!!

*(I received an e-ARC from the publisher. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*

This finishes up the last arc with a awesome fight only to lead to a all out attack right away.

Kafka shows up last volume just in time to save his friends. But this fight he's about to endure isn't the big tough one we expected. In fact, Kafka seems to have the upperhand against Kaiju no. 9. But it is when Soshiro shows up that Kafka might have some trouble.

Soon after we get an invasion on a huge scale as a new enemy shows up. Right away going towards Kafka and the others. This time we get to see our girl Kikoru shine as well as the rest fight together for survival.

While I think the fact none of the agents were killed last arc lowers the stakes a bit, I did still enjoy the fast paced and fun battles with great art that's easy to follow. Hopefully this series continues to be high energy.

Cool fight scenes, but I wanted more dialogue between characters! Kafka and the other Defence Force members are really funny and have great chemistry together, so I couldn't help wanting to see their conversations off the battlefield. Hopefully next volume has a better balance between combat and character development!

High stakes, fast paced fight scenes and creatively drawn monsters collaborate to bring (arguably) the best entry so far. Effortlessly awesome, Matsumato maximises the magnificent and brings another banger of a volume to the table.

Now we're talking! The plot thickens, the stakes are up, and the levels of destruction are going through the roof! But amidst this all, it's still a very personal journey for Kafka Hibino.

I love the monster designs, with strong influences from both Godzilla and Hieronymus Bosch, and I also very much appreciate how Matsumoto takes time between the dynamic battles to develop the side characters and villains.

All in all, Kaijuu no 8 shapes up to be my next favorite shonen :).

Not a spoiler because it's on the cover but Shinomiya's weapon is SO COOL. She says it doesn't fit with her style, but I strongly disagree. She is so fierce! I love her.

Kafka can't seem to understand what being an under the radar Kaiju means. He is a good person trying his best to save everyone, because that's what he promised Mina in a faraway childhood, but being the weakest human and the strongest - and only - undercover Kaiju of the group, all he got was a WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE on his head, by humans and Kaijus the same. Shinomyia and Reno will have a lot on their hands on the chapters to come.

A group of Kaijus attack their base. The weird part: the are usually loners. Who is their leader?

Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshino takes the spotlight as he fights first Kaiju No. 8 and then brand-spanking new Kaiju No. 10. There was a nice little lull in the middle for some character interaction, but nothing too interesting occurs.

It's still a good series, but it is starting to coast through on action scenes a little more than I'd like.

Gigantic action in this volume, wraps up the last storyline with Kaiju No 9 and whatever it's deal is, kick off the next chapter of this story with a bang. I appreciate the pace this book is pushing for and how great the art is. Scale is a big thing with this book and it does a great job of giving you a sense of how big the monsters are and how much threat they prove. Kafka gets some good moments in this story, but some of the other characters really come into focus and I appreciate that it's helping fill his world out.

Still enjoying this series a lot, still recommend it for fans of One-Punch Man or Mashle.

These are just so good! We are getting to know some of the other characters and I think the vice-captain is super interesting. Can't wait to find out more about what he can do.

Dammit, I just love this series so much. I love Kafka and Mina's relationship and banter, I love Hoshina for being an absolute badass husbando, I love the characters and their interactions, I just love everything. I'm so glad I gave this series a chance, it hasn't let me down yet and I doubt it will.

i’m inhaling these volumes, fr.

anyways, i caught up with the anime, meaning (knowing my luck) that i am setting myself up for heartbreak. i really hope that this mangaka and Gege both using cats as their icons is just a pure coincidence, i don’t need these characters treated like my homies in JJK…

it was interesting to see that the manga did not feature the scene outside of the dinner party, i wonder if it appears in a later volume. anyways, i am a nervous wreck and none of these characters better die, thank you very much. i love this series so far🥹

Raid on Tachikawa arc has got to be my favorite arc so far!

I love how brainy Kafka is, here, in exchange for not being that strong enough (without using Kaiju no. 8) I can't stop calling him Taiju in my mind! His face just reminds me of him so much, although they certainly are nothing alike! If you know what I mean, haha!

Anyway, again the action-packed Raid on Tachikawa arc! I love that we can finally see Hoshina's full-full potential—versus Monster no. 9! My heart was beating so fast. Now, that's what you call badass! And I like my girl strong! I just love Shinomiya's character so much! I can't say more about Mina since I only hang out with her for like a panel or two in each chapter even though we already are aware of her full potential (a sickeningly strong woman!) but yuh, I need to see her more. I can't decide yet how her character will play in the series—a friend, a lover, or maybe even a villain against Kafka, kinda like Makima? Augh! Please, no. (I'm afraid of that idea! But I mean, she sounds so hateful towards monsters esp. what happened with their village back then) but, ugh.

This volume had me on the edge of my fricken seat! I can't wait to read the continuation in volume!

But the celebration chapter is a funny, chaotic but refreshing one tho—to wash away all drops of blood and monster carcasses. AND AGAIN! I ADORE KAFKA AND ICHIKAWA'S FRIENDSHIP—PLUS THEM BEING TRIOS WITH EITHER SHINOMIYA OR IHARU!

Kafka Hibino gets a golden opportunity to showcase his strength in an effort to help his friends until he has to go up against an unexpected threat only to discover each of their limits. While he proves himself to the eyes of others, a new threat emerges in the dark, requiring the Japanese Defense Force's members to work together to stop a cataclysmic disaster.

As if the first two volumes weren't enough to determine the exquisite quality of this new series, mangaka Naoya Matsumoto proves once more that he has both story-telling and artwork completely under control as he delivers another brilliantly paced and developed arc for fans to indulge.

Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ Media for a free review copy!

This was a great volume! Lots of fighting, lots of action, and of course lots of people getting hurts as usual. We got to see the teams take on some really cool kaiju and even some humanoid ones. Overall, this was a fun volume full of action and fighting! Can't wait for volume 4!

still having fun! still grossed out! but the characters are coming into their own and that's been cool. I do think there's too many of them and they shouldn't have made so many rookies such a big deal early on, but they're getting a little space to breathe, at least

reread note:
i can't believe i thought reno would be the peak of my interest in this series. oh, past me. sweet summer child.

This series is fun, but still kind of meh. I’m waiting for it to really really pick up. The kaiju being intelligent could definitely up the stakes.

Kaiju No. 8 vol. 3

This volume of "Kaiju No. 8" starts with Kafka, in his Kaiju form, fighting the other humanoid Kaiju (No. 9). He get close to killing it, but at the last moment he gets located by the Defense Force, so Kaiju No. 9 escapes. Kaiju No. 8 gets attacked by Vice Captain Soshiro Hoshina and after a tough fight, Kafka is able to escape and change into his human form. The Defense Force returns to their headquarters, but they keep looking for the two humanoid Kaiju. The members of the Defense Force throw a small feast, where they start arguing about the mission and the Vice Captain announces that Kafka will get promoted to a General Officer. The same night that he gets promoted, a small army of Kaiju, with a powerful leader, attacks the Defense Force's base.
This was a great volume. So far this series has been incredible. It's filled with beautiful action, great characters and very high stakes. This volume is even more action packed than the previous ones and while I usually consider this a problem, here it works very well. The fight between Kaiju No. 8 and No. 9 is very good, because we finally get to see how incredibly powerful Kafka's Kaiju form is. The fight between Kaiju No. 8 and the Vice Captain is amazing, because we get to see how powerful he is and also we see Kafka's strategy, as he's trying not to hurt the Vice Captain. Finally, the battle between the Defense Force and the army of Kaiju, at the end, is also incredible and epic and I can't wait to see how it's going to continue in the next volume. Each battle is also even more interesting thanks to how high the stakes always are. Other than that, what I love the most about this series is the characters and the chemistry between them. The protagonist, Kafka, is very well written and interesting. In this volume we don't really get any deeper into his personality, but we see how useful his vast knowledge of Kaiju is and how the fact that he can turn into a Kaiju might start affecting his relationships. In this volume I really enjoyed seeing him communicate a bit more with Commander Mina. We still don't know her very well, but she's a very interesting character. A character we did get deeper into is Vice Captain Soshiro Hoshina. I really like the contrast between how cheerful and lighthearted he is, while interacting with other members of the Defense Force and how focused and dark he is while fighting Kaiju. Also, he has a lot of chemistry with Kafka and in this volume they get a bit closer, which is great to see.
The artwork in this volume is incredible, as always. Naoya Matsumoto truly is an incredible artist. The fight scenes always look fantastic and epic, while the more quiet moments are also beautiful. The designs of the various Kaiju are very unique and interesting. Also, he's great at facial expressions and he perfectly utilises this ability to break the tension through comedy.
Overall, this was an incredible volume, filled with tons of action and great characters. I can't wait to see how this story is going to continue.
