Mark Waid (born March 21, 1962 in Hueytown, Alabama) is an American comic book writer. He is best known for his eight-year run as writer of the DC Comics' title The Flash, as well as his scripting of the limited series Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright, and his work on Marvel Comics' Captain America.
Yeah, so this one introduces us to Riverdale's evil redhead and her brother, Jason. But more than that, it gives a fantastic backstory that shows why she and Veronica hate each other so much.
I don't want to spoil anything, but I loved the way it all went down at the boarding school. The story picks up right where the last volume left off with Ronnie being shipped off to Switzerland. She's alone and missing her friends, and Cheryl swoops in to save the day.
Except Cheryl is, of course, a vile bitch. But unfortunately for her and her nasty ways, she didn't know who she was dealing with...
And back in Riverdale, Archie is having a bit of an existential crisis without his girlfriend around. It was sweet the way all of his friends (especially Jughead) were there to help him get through everything.
I think this one showcases Veronica as more than a spoiled brat and gives readers a good reason to root for her as Archie's love interest, which was something the series was always missing (to me) before. Definitely a cool comic with a good storyline. If you haven't already, check this one out!
Still always fun, in the 3rd volume of the "new" Archie comics, Cheryl Blossom and Ronnie are at war in Switzerland and in Riverdale and both are playing for keeps. While I still enjoy Wade's storytelling, I miss Staples' drawing from vol 1. In any case, the are 5 great issues and well-worth the investment!
Like, I didn’t think I asked for much. I just needed Cheryl to be a part of my life. And her brother is a part of it too, which is a plus because he just feeds her crazy.
Cheryl is at the boarding school that Veronica is forced to go to. Archie and Jughead flip roles and deal with the loss of Veronica.
Honestly, Veronica and Archie are low-key unhealthy.. but I guess that’s just my logic?
---
I love Cheryl. Does that mean I don't have a heart because I need that confirmed.
"I just want to waste my life."
"People desire things, they expect things, they scheme for things, they try to wriggle out of things. But not me. All I desire is a burger, and if I have something to say I say it."
I understand that we have to deal with the aftermath of the last volume that separated the gang but this is so far form what drew me to the series in the first place. It's the same writer (with help from Lori Matsumoto for Veronica's parts) but the artist has changed drastically. I know Staples hasn't been back since volume one but Fish attempted something closer to Staples' art. Eisma just seems so different and it took me out of the book. Veronica and some of the other female characters look so angry and harsh. The storyline is boring to me. Worst of all: where the hell is Betty?
She was my favorite character from the first issue and she was barely in two panels in this book. I miss her! Instead of getting equal time for Veronica, Archie AND Betty, I get Veronica, Archie and Cheryl, who I don't care about. The vignettes in this book seem even shorter than usual. I liked watching Veronica grow as a person in volume one but they had to regress her a bit for this storyline.
The bit with Archie wanting to be more like Jughead was okay but not super intriguing. Archie's charm seemed a little off in this one, as well. The bit with Sayid went absolutely nowhere. I miss what this series was.
I'm having so much fun getting to know the Riverdale universe. Veronica was off in Switzerland boarding school. It ended up being a fun detour. Veronica has made an enemy in Cheryl and now she is coming after Archie to ruin Veronica's life.
Jughead continues to shine and he is the best character in this series. He is such a great character.
There is also an end epilogue story about Reggie and Me. It was told from the perspective of his dog and it was fun.
This new story is so great and I'm having fun reading it. I enjoy the art and the characters. This is some great entertainment for myself and I'm enjoying it.
Joe Eisma comes in to handle the art at Veronica's boarding school after drawing 50 issues of boarding school kids in Morning Glories; talk about playing to an artist's strengths. Waid does a fantastic job of marrying classic Archie with modern day sensibilities and storytelling.
Mark Waid does a great job of playing up the heartache of Veronica and Archie being separated by an ocean. Cheryl Blossom is introduced and tries to make Veronica's life hell. Meanwhile, Archie tries to shut himself off from the world by becoming Jughead.
2022 Update: It's cute reading that I was into Riverdale when I originally read this volume. I haven't watched the show since I finished the first season. I still enjoyed this volume because of the introduction to Cheryl Blossom. She's the one character that makes Veronica realize that she's grown to become more like the people of Riverdale than expected. Having to deal with Cheryl as a character truly made me appreciate Veronica more as character. She still works my nerves, but it's clear that once she was sent away from Riverdale to go to boarding school that she cares about and misses her friends. The artwork does change up in this one so people may not enjoy it as much.
Okay I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to Archie stuff now that I've seen the entire Riverdale show. This is probably my favorite volume. It was interesting seeing Cheryl Blossom being added to the mix. I'm sure she's going to give Riverdale a lot of problems in the next couple of issues which I can't wait to pick up! If you haven't started this series yet I would recommend picking it up.
I was wondering when Cheryl Blossom would come into the story and now, she has arrived!
For this volume, I do have to say that I wish Veronica had been in Riverdale but I do understand the necessity of her character being at boarding school and for the introduction of Cheryl Blossom. I do think out of all the volumes so far, these issues did show the vanity and materialistic aspect of Veronica the most.
Continues to be a fast and humorous read. With that ending, I am very interested in seeing what happens next especially with the new addition to Riverdale (not spoilers here) and the drama that will no doubt occur.
Five stars for Archie and Jughead switching places (Archie becomes an apathetic monster, which is pretty great, and Jughead gets to say, "This involves things I hate, like hard work and human contact"), minus one for the lack of Betty in this book (seriously, where is she??). Status quo continues with this volume, which means (a) the art was still better with Fiona Staples, (b) this is inoffensive and largely quite fun, and (c) I'm going to keep reading these as the library gets them in.
Cheryl shows up in this volume, as you can probably tell by the cover:
At the end of the last volume, Veronica's dad lost his mayoral campaign (the one that gave us the best cover in the series so far), so Veronica is forced to leave Riverdale and go to a Swiss boarding school. This is where she meets Cheryl Blossom, who turns out to be not only a mean girl but also the daughter of a rival telecom company (BlossomComm - sounds like a place I want to work). Veronica's arc is strange given that she hasn't spent that much time in Riverdale; mostly she .
Best outfit goes to Cheryl. I went on an internet search for faux fur leopard after seeing this and now I'm being retargeted relentlessly. Curses!!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
It feels like the Archie reboot series is losing some steam. I really enjoyed this series when Fiona Staples and Veronica Fish were doing the art. However, the artist in this volume isn't really adding much to the story. The facial expressions aren't as rich as in the volumes, so some of the emotional life of the characters is missing. Also, the backgrounds are just plain. Sometimes they are poorly drawn, and sometimes they just aren't there, and it doesn't seem like an artistic choice. The story is also much weaker. For most of this volume, Veronica is in Switzerland, so basically it is just about Archie moping about Veronica's absence and Veronica trying to get back to Riverdale. For some reason, Betty is mostly absent. Breaking up the three main characters in Archie doesn't really work.
This was so fun! I love the way this series is progressing. This would probably be a 5 stars, except we were severely lacking in the Betty Cooper department. But all the characters are great :)
[Read as single issues] Just in time for the arrival of (the superb) Riverdale TV show, Cheryl Blossom makes her presence known as Veronica is shipped off to a boarding school and comes face to face with the redheaded terror. It's war at first sight, with repercussions galore. Meanwhile, Archie tries to deal with the loss of his precious Ronnie back in Riverdale, while Betty tries to work out her complicated Archie-related feelings.
Mark Waid does it again, juggling lots of concurrent storylines in completely different settings across the world and still make it feel like a Smalltown USA series full of believable characters that I can't tear my eyes away from. The healthy dose of Archie getting into crazy mishaps helps too.
Joe Eisma, free from the shackles of Morning Glories, joins the Archie team for these issues and brings his own flair to the proceedings. It's nice to see him draw literally anyone not in a Morning Glories outfit, and he's already proven apt at drawing teenagers doing crazy things, so he fits right in here.
I feel like there was a little less content in this volume of Archie. I still enjoyed it, and some interesting things happen, but I miss Betty and Jughead, and I wish the story line between Betty and Sayid progressed differently and was shown more. Still, this volume introduces Cheryl Blossom to the New Riverdale, and I love her character. She's so devious, and she just doesn't care. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa does a great job with her on Riverdale. The TV version of Cheryl is spot-on to her original in the comics. In fact, while I was reading, I often had Madelaine Petsch's voice in my head. I'm looking forward to reading Volume Four, but I'm also sad that this series is over. I've been nostalgically enjoying it, and I hope Mark Waid continues writing for the New Riverdale. If not, there are other series, like Reggie and Me, Jughead, and Betty and Veronica that I would be willing to try. Still, classic Archie will always be important to me!
4 stars. This volume made me entirely too happy. This is easily my favorite one so far. We got Cheryl and Jason Blossom, Moose, Reggie, Dilton and augggggh my heart is just so happy and full of nostalgia. I wish I knew where all of my old Archie comics were because I would read them all right now. Cheryl came in and did what she does best which is cause chaos and I was here for it. I love her and Veronica's rivalry and petty back and forth antics. I feel like so much happened in this volume and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I might just skip the volumes and start reading these in the single issues because I can't wait for volume 4 to come out.
Mark Waid's reboot of Archie continues! I've been really impressed by how much I've liked this comic. Sure, it's light and fluffy teenage drama, but Waid writes these timeless characters in a way that is just really engaging. The artwork here is also quite nice, but I definitely miss Fiona Staples. Cheryl Blossom shows up and causes some trouble. Things get a tad unrealistic here, with how easy it is to transfer out of a Swiss boarding school and all, but this comic is still a lot of fun. Well worth anyone's time.
😤but where’s Betty????? 😤everyone else and their Cheryl Blossoms (aka Ronnie No 2🤣🤣🤣) feature here, but hardly Betty? 😤I get that these works are “modernised versions” of the original Archie Comics, but I don’t want main characters given a lesser role⚠️
This was good! Not my favorite & I miss Betty. I miss the original artists. So I was slightly disappointed in this volume & don't have an interest in reading the spin-offs (Jughead, Reggie, etc.) but I will be continuing with this storyline because I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I still enjoy the nostalgia of Archie & his gang. Plus, I've been binge watching RIVERDALE, which I absolutely love so I'll always love these characters.
Likes: It was a fun story, especially to see so much of what makes Veronica and Cheryl different from one another. JUGHEAD. I mean always Jughead, but especially in this volume.
Dislikes: The art. This sounds very specific, but there were certain panels where I thought to myself, why is her mouth so menacing? It was off-putting at times, and while I was able to move past it, the art still took me out of the story.
I enjoyed this volume more than the previous one. Archie was still annoyingly whiney but the issues didn't focus on that as much as they did what was happening between Veronica and Cheryl. The 'Reggie and Me' first issue that was added in the back of this edition was adorable. I'll definitely be checking that series out.
So this volume was a explosion of hilarity of oddness! It was very humorous for sure and this version of Archie and Riverdale doesn’t take its self too seriously. It’s a cute comic series that could be enjoyed by younger readers too and the illustrations are fantastic.
A story about missing people, which obviously is exactly what I need when I've not seen any of my friends for 40 days and, because the Event is worse than literal quarantine, have no idea if or when I'll ever see them again. Veronica has been exiled to Swiss finishing school, incommunicado, where the reboot introduces the mythos' queen bitch, Cheryl Blossom - who inevitably soon ends up back in Riverdale with plans for Archie which, as her brother observes, are unnecessarily baroque: "'Elaborate trap'? He's a hormonal high school boy! Why don't you just lift up your top?" Despite which, there's an abiding sense that nothing too bad is going to happen; this may be gently updated from classic Archie, but still feels closer to that all-American idyll than to the gangs, drugs and murders of the TV Riverdale.
