Catching a kidnapper takes teamwork ...and a St. Bernard.
Alanna Morgan was raised in remote Alaska by a couple who called themselves her parents—not kidnappers. A jailbreak brings her face-to-face with the past she wants to escape and on a collision course with the woman who stole her childhood. Alanna can’t let other helpless victims be abducted and sets out with Chance, a therapy St. Bernard, by her side. But Desparre rookie police officer Peter Robak has other plans for the civilian investigator. Together, in the mountain wilderness in frigid temperatures, criminals aren’t the only threat they face. A wary alliance and a rescue dog will have to be enough to keep them alive and to catch a desperate fugitive.

Alaska Mountain Rescue by Elizabeth Heiter 2nd book in the K-9 Alaska series. Can be read as a stand-alone but spoilers from book 1 so read in order if that matters to you. Harlequin Intrigue. Suspense with a touch of romance. Alanna returns to Alaska to help search for the escaped kidnapper. After all, Alanna was a victim having lived with Darcy as her mother for 14 years, so Alanna believes she knows how Darcy thinks. Peter doesn’t trust Alanna, but as a member of the towns small police force, he will use her to find the escaped felon.
Chance, the St Bernard plays a major role in this fast moving rescue story. What a hero. I took a bit to warm up to Peter and trust him. He certainly comes through in the suspenseful last quarter of the story. Romance in this book is minimal and occurs mostly in the epilogue similar to book 1. Dramatic and engaging. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Alanna Morgan was kidnapped at an early age and was taken to a remote town in Alaska where she lived with a family for fourteen years that wasn’t her own. Alanna was also the one who eventually turned her kidnappers in. Now the woman named Darcy that Alanna had called “mother” for fourteen years has escaped from prison, so Alanna returns to Alaska to try and seek out Darcy and talk her into turning herself in. Before this happens though, more kidnappings occur. Is this the work of Darcy repeating her past, or somebody else?
This was such an enjoyable story with a very interesting premise. I really liked Alanna and felt for her. She had longed for the family that she was taken from, but she also built up a connection to her new “family” in the fourteen years that she lived with them, so she felt as though her loyalties were divided. Peter Robak was a police officer, new to the Desparre, Alaska, police force. At first, he didn’t trust Alanna’s motives in returning to Alaska, but later he came to trust her and he crossed a lot of lines in his job trying to help her. Then there was Alanna’s wonderful, brave, and heroic therapy dog, a St. Bernard named Chance who I just loved so much. I also enjoyed the setting of the remote Alaskan town of Desparre which was vividly portrayed with its frigid temperatures and avalanches. Overall, this was an extremely entertaining romantic suspense story.
This is a very entertaining, creative thriller. Though a stand alone novel, I highly suggest reading K-9 Defense first. This novel sets scene for action enfolding in Alaska Mountain Rescue. I really enjoy how Elizabeth makes Alaska visually come alive. The story of a kidnap victim returning to Alaska to search for her escaped kidnaper. The reality of a victim bonding to her kidnaper's blended family is a strong element of the story. Dog lovers will love heroic St. Bernard Chance. During Pandemic Times, a page turning thriller can help you escape these difficult times and this novel achieves that. Highly recommend and cannot wait for Elizabeth's next Intrigue Thriller in 2021!
This is the 3rd book I read by Elizabeth Heiter. I liked this book's storyline. This book's storyline was sad 😞. I liked Alanna's character. I liked Peter's character. I loved ❤ Chance 🐕. The ending was okay.
Alaska Mountain Rescue by Elizabeth Heiter is an intriguing romantic suspense novel. While this latest release is the second novel in the K-9 Alaska series, it can be read as a standalone.
Alanna Morgan returns to the small Alaskan town where she was rescued from kidnappers five years earlier. Darcy Altier, the woman who kidnapped her, has escaped from prison and Alanna believes she can help the police capture her. Alanna has mostly come to terms with her conflicted feelings about Darcy but she is nervous about seeing her again. She is certain she can figure out where Darcy is hiding but the local police are suspicious of her motives for searching for the escapee.
Rookie Police Officer Peter Robak does not trust Alanna's reasons for trying to find Darcy. He and his partner Tate Emory go out of their way to ensure Alanna is not planning to help her kidnapper evade capture. But Peter soon realizes he genuinely likes and is possibly beginning to care for Alanna. But his previous experiences leave him doubting he can fully trust her.
Alanna would rather work with the police, but after they brush her off, she begins her search. She starts at the most logical place she thinks Darcy might be. But finding her kidnapper might be more complicated than Alanna thinks. She also does not count on Peter's interference or her unexpected attraction to him. With time running out, will Alanna and Peter locate Darcy?
Alaska Mountain Rescue is an engaging romantic suspense novel. Alanna and Peter are beautifully developed characters who are very easy to like. The storyline is well-written and unfolds at a brisk pace. The Alaskan setting is vibrantly developed and springs vividly to life. With a few unexpected plot twists, Elizabeth Heiter brings this suspenseful mystery to an edge of the seat conclusion. I highly recommend the K-9 Alaska series to romantic suspense readers.
Another terrific hero! He truly puts it all on the line to save the heroine more than once. Another great K-9 character, too, in Chance the St. Bernard. More than the heroine's therapy dog (although he's certainly that), he proves invaluable as a natural born mountain rescue dog.
The heroine got on my nerves a little bit, although with her backstory, maybe some of her choices were justified. But she saves the dog, so I gotta like her. ;)
Honestly I bought this because of the dog on the cover, but I was really pleasantly surprised by this one. I liked Alanna and though I really disliked Peter the love interest at first, he actually had some decent character growth I wasn't expecting. I'm still trying to warm up to this type of fast-track romance that's been in the few Harlequins I've read (which I'm guessing is a staple in these books), but at least this couple actually had one conversation getting to know each other lol (3.5)
Good book full of twists and turns. Five years earlier, Alanna and several other children were rescued from the "parents" who kidnapped them and raised them in a small Alaska town (K-9 Defense). Though happy to be reunited with her real family, Alanna continues to have conflicted feelings about the woman who raised her. When she hears that Darcy escaped prison and kidnapped two more children, she believes that Darcy will head to Alaska to hide. Alanna thinks that if she can find her, she can talk Darcy into releasing the children. She heads for Alaska to offer her services to the police there.
Alanna has mixed feelings about being back in Desparre, a place of both good and bad memories. Along with her dog, Chance, Alanna visits the small police department to find that they regard her offer of help with deep suspicion. They believe that she's more likely to help Darcy than them. So she decides to investigate on her own.
Rookie cop Peter Robak is especially skeptical. A former war correspondent, Peter has first-hand knowledge of the effects captivity can have on a victim. His journalistic career ended when a kidnapping victim blew herself up under the guise of being rescued. Now he plans to keep Alanna under surveillance, hoping she'll lead him to Darcy.
The suspense of the story was terrific. Peter and Alanna start out mistrusting each other. But when Alanna uncovers a clue that could reveal Darcy's hiding place, her search lands her in the middle of an avalanche. Peter's tailing of her puts him in a position to rescue her, and they form an uneasy alliance. When Alanna's instincts prove correct, Peter finds himself willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. That doesn't sit well with the police chief, and suddenly Peter has to make some difficult choices. There were multiple twists to the story as they close in on Darcy and have to walk a fine line between the cops and the kidnapper.
Just when it looks like they've succeeded in their mission, another kidnapping strikes especially close to Alanna. An unsuspected player is out for revenge, and Alanna is the only one who can end it. Peter, who is already on thin ice with his boss, takes extreme steps to protect Alanna. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat until it was all over. It also left me hurting for Peter, whose life is upended once again. I liked the epilogue and seeing how everything turned out.
The romance between Peter and Alanna was a slow one that mostly took a backseat to the suspense. Despite his mistrust, Peter soon discovered that he liked Alanna and wanted to believe her. Attraction blossomed between them. Peter worried about Alanna's safety and risked his job to keep her safe. Alanna worried about Peter and the consequences helping her would have on his career. Neither one expected the feelings that grew between them. I liked the ending and the new direction Peter found for his life. The future for both of them looks good.
My favorite secondary character in the story was Alanna's dog, Chance. As a therapy dog, he is very good at helping calm those around him. There were times he almost seemed human in his interactions with both Alanna and Peter. I also loved when his St. Bernard instincts kicked in, sending him into rescue mode during both avalanche incidents.
We return to the K-9 Alaska series with Alaska Mountain Rescue which takes place (story timing) about five years after Kensie rescued her kidnapped sister, Alanna, and changed the lives of all the children who had been kidnapped by the Altier couple over the years. Only this time, Alanna is searching for the woman she called Mom for so many years, Darcy Altier after she escaped custody while at her husband’s funeral and it looks like she’s up to her old habits of kidnapping a child she feels is truly meant to be hers. Alanna believes she can help the police find her and the child because she’s convinced she knows where Darcy is headed… home to Alaska.
Unfortunately, her offer of help is looked at with suspicion and the possibility that Alanna is, in fact, helping Darcy. Left with no choice, and the strong belief that she’s right, plus the additional confidence in herself that she could talk Darcy into giving the child back and returning to prison she begins her own search. Alanna will set out on her own to find a part of her past that her family really wants her to leave in the past. But that past also contains her memories of people who loved her, siblings who were also torn from the family they’d become a part of, and guilt that she is the cause of so much damage to people she cares about – whether it’s logical to do so or not. She didn’t expect the rookie police officer with an attitude of mistrust to follow her… or play such an important role in her life.
Alaska Mountain Rescue was a fascinating story in itself but also gave me a different way of looking at the survivors of child kidnapping who have been held a very, very long time. I think most people would agree that when we learn of children who had been kidnapped years earlier being reunited with their families once again we don’t consider the fact that these children sometimes did have a family that they were being torn away from. I know that sounds illogical but consider if a child was kidnapped at two years old and lived with one couple and other siblings for their entire life up until say twelve… those people are the only family that child remembers, in spite of the fact that there is another family who has been searching and grieving for years. It’s such a mixed bag of emotions, isn’t it? Joy and anger, finding one family and losing another.
Peter and Alanna’s romance is very much a slow burn and even on the very back burner for the main focus of Alaska Mountain Rescue is on the search for a kidnapper and the return of children so they do not suffer the fate that Alanna and her siblings did. Slowly, Peter will lose his initial mistrust of the woman who is coming to mean so much to him… but first, there are choices to be made, and not all of them will turn out as intended.
I was completely drawn in and wrapped up in this story. There is danger, not always expected or where we think we will be finding it, a sense of family betrayal, a few unexpected twists, watching Alanna deal with the present but her past as well, and of course… one adorable St. Bernard, Chance. This pup won my heart early on and he just keeps getting better as the story continues. If you haven’t started the K-9 Alaska series yet, I would recommend it to any reader who loves a good story with plenty of suspense, danger, and romance.
Elizabeth Heiter brings us the second installment in her K-9 Alaska Rescue. This story dives right into the life of Alanna Morgan who was kidnapped at the age of 5 from in front of her house. Alanna has lived with her kidnappers, Darcey and Julian Altier, for many years as a loving family in a small town in Alaska. One day she decides it's time to alert someone that she is still alive which brings about a turn of events where her kidnappers are arrested and placed in jail. For the past 5 years Alanna has lived with conflicting emotions. She has a certain amount of love and loyalty to the people who raised her because they were good to her, but at the same time she feels somewhat disloyal to her biological family. She has done pretty good at hiding her emotions, but deep down she's very conflicted. The recent turn of events and Darcey's escape from her Oregon prison, Alanna knows she must return to Desparre and face her past. No one knows Darcey better and that if she has kidnapped another child then she will head to one of the hideouts around Desparre. Officer Pere Robok hasn't been a law enforcement long and has faced a certain amount of backlash from other officers because of his disability. His first encounter with Alanna couldn't have gone worse. He was suspicious from the moment he heard her name. He knows first hand about the control kidnappers can have over their victims. This absorbing story is filled with suspense, mystery, and a touch of romance. It brings complex characters that will tug at your heart. The author shows Alanna not as a victim, but as a survivor. I love that!! The plot is full of twists and turns that will kept me turning the pages. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves a good suspense or a clean mystery. **I received this book from the author for an honest opinion. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Something that bugged me throughout was the cops. None were dirty but they really were portrayed, realistically I guess, not trained to de-escalate, dismissing members of the community they’re suppose to serve, going in hot and heavy and causing problems instead of peaceful resolution. I did not like chief Hernandez in this book, which is too bad since the next book is hers.
Where was the romance? There was nothing between them. He didn’t like or trust her, then in six days he is magically in love? Only one kiss too! I noticed in the first book that the physical depiction of romance and love was light but it was non-existent in this book. If God or praying had been mentioned it would have been a Love Inspired and not an Intrigue.
Chance is not a trained dog so why was he never on the leash and in places he shouldn’t be? (See running loose in the airport)
Why couldn’t Peter stay as reported with the partial hearing loss? That plot made no sense. Also about 2/3 the way through the book his hearing seemed to stop being an issue. Poor editing/continuity.
I already have the next book but I’m unsure if I’ll read it or not. This one was so much of a struggle to get through compared to the first I’m worried they’ll keep going downhill.
This is Book #2 in the K-9 Alaska Novel. Alanna Morgan grew up in Alaska. She’s back in Alaska now with her dog Chance who is her service dog. Her main reason is to find the woman who took her childhood away from her, and a make sure they catch her. Then return her to jail, because since she’s escaped a child has been abducted. When she approaches the police to tell them she can help locate the women she’s know since she was 5 they dismiss her. The town and now rookie cop Peter Robak look at her funny. He and his partner start to follow her in the hopes she leads them right to the women who kidnapped her so long ago. But they underestimate her to say the least. He doesn’t trust her, and vice versa. In the mist of the following something happens and Peter makes a decision. Alanna also takes a leap of faith, but situations turn around on both of them. What happens next is horrific and Alanna can’t help to feel responsible. Buy the book to see what happens.
Paperback version to be released on December 29, 2020 Kindle January 1, 2021
Another in the K-9 Alaska series, in which Alanna Morgan returns to Alaska when she learns that the woman who kidnapped her at age 5 has escaped prison and may have kidnapped another child. Alanna is determined to stop the woman she thought of as "mother" from making yet another mistake. While there, she and her therapy dog, a St. Bernard, encounters a rookie police officer, Peter Robak, who still has to prove himself on the force.
Alanna convinces Peter that she can get to her mother if only they can find her, but trust doesn't come easily to either of these adults and their encounters don't bode well for Peter staying on the force when some of his decisions place him in direct opposition to his police chief.
Will they find the woman? And if they do, what danger will that place them in? And, will those parts of their respective pasts ever be resolved so that trust can enable them to feel other emotions?
Following Alanna’s journey back to Alaska a place she thought she would never come back to. She has come back with her trusted companion, Chance, a therapy St Bernard, by her side to face her past. Alanna was kidnapped at a very early age and grew up with a “family” unlike any other. The kidnappers were her parents and the other children were her brothers and sisters. She runs, face to face, into her “ mother” after a jail break and finds there are still warm feelings for her. Feelings are indeed a tangled web. Then another child goes missing. Has there been another kidnapping? Is this the beginning of forming another “family”? The investigation begins with local authorities. The book has many twists and turns. Certainly engaging to the end. I would definitely recommend.
Sometimes the relationships we build with our family are complicated. Alanna is a bit extreme in these dynamics since she was raised by kidnappers with other kids she considered to be her siblings. This was a beautiful twist of conflicted feelings between her birth family and the family created by her kidnappers. The feelings and relationships between birth siblings and "created" siblings, and what happens when these 2 worlds collide. Once I was able to carve out time to sit and enjoy a book, I'm so glad this is what I picked. It was family drama, love, and suspense perfectly entwined.
Alaska Mountain Resue: (A Cold Case Mystery) Elizabeth Heiter
Elizabeth Heiter once again has created a twist and turn romantic suspense taking you back to Desparre, Alaska. Amanda returns to Desparre because her ‘mother’ who kidnapped her has escaped prison and kidnapped two children. Believing she can find her and save the children she returns. Police officer Peter Robak doesn’t know if he can trust her. Will a lack of trust endanger everyone? A story that keeps you on your toes as it weaves the story one way then another. A guaranteed late night read.
I really enjoyed this story as I read the first book in the series, my opinion, is the woman was wrong you do not kidnap other people’s children with no conquence....
This book was the second part of K-9 Defense. This story revolved around Alanna Morgan who was kidnapped at a very young age along with other children. The woman who kidnapped her escapes out of jail and that is where Alanna’s past catches up to her. Alanna can’t let other other helpless victims get abducted.
Alanna sets out with Chance who is her therapy St. Bernard dog. However Desparre rookie police officer Peter Robak has other ideas. Together Alanna and Peter in the Alaskan mountain wilderness in freezing temperatures they face threats. They work together to bring het kidnappers to justice. There were lots of twists and turns in this story. There weren’t any spicy 🌶️ moments in this story. However there were lots of good parts to this story.

Alanna Morgan is a kidnapping survivor with a wonderful support dog named Chance. One of her kidnappers has escaped custody, and she believes she can talk her into turning herself in. Some of the local police in Desparre don’t believe her sincerity in wanting to help. This is a great romantic suspense novel that is full of action. You will be cheering for Alanna when you learn her full story. She has overcome a lot in her life. This is book #2 in the series. You do not have to read the first book, but I highly recommend that you start with #1 and move to this one. Chance (her support dog) is my favorite character! He is such a hero in this book!!
I enjoyed this intriguing romance. I bought this at our local Goodwill store and I've given it a 4.5* rating. This was filled with adventure and playing outside the box to get things done. Being a formally abducted child with her own personal K-9 sort of dog now, she's being dragged back into that kind of situation again with action all around. Lots to enjoy in this story. Not sure this subject of child abduction is suitable for the under 18 readers.
I am one who thinks she can figure out story lines but I am always surprised on how much I don't know. This book was no different. I slow my
reading when I don't like the ending I envision. It took me 3 weeks to finish this book - one page at a time..adjust possible endings.. repeat this til I realize I have not been let down by an author yet..
Alanna is still torn between the family that kidnapped her all those years ago and her birth family but when she thinks she can help police find Darcy after she escaped from federal custody. Peter and chance will melt your heart.
Exciting story. Would have given five stars except the dogs weren’t the heroes of the story like they are a lot of the time. Would have liked to see the dogs in on the final chase.
This was a interesting story that had so many different things going on. It was hard to separate out the different parts of the story that when put together made a whole. It worked well though.
Delighted to read the second book in this series and see what kind of life that Alanna has built for herself after being rescued from kidnappers. She returns to Alaska and immediately gets involved in trying to rescue other children who were kidnapped like she was when she was five. She meets the hero who is cop & the adventure begins! No spoilers. Recommend this book.
This book was hard to put down, I would tell most people this is a very good story . Peter is the man most women dream of. Alanna and her big sweet dog steal your ❤
