The only thing she has to give is exactly what they want.

The Covington Heights Crew has a funny way of protecting their own. With rapes from rival gangs and human trafficking riddling their poverty-stricken streets, they’ll keep the girls from their neighborhood safe—for a price. No money? No worries. They have quite creative payment plans.

Messed up? Yeah, they know. They’re criminals.

Twenty-one-year-old Fiona Thompson was happy to stay off the radar of the twisted drug dealers who encourage her mother’s habit. She’s sure that she can work her way out of Covington and find a better life for herself and her baby sister. But then she beeped. Loud.

Second-in-command Leo Ricci is a poser. The web of lies he’s spun for a life unravels every time he’s around Fiona—every day he’s trying to keep her safe and every second he’s avoiding his destiny.

When his missteps challenge the authority to which he’s pledged his allegiance and Fiona’s life is at stake, there’s only one solution—become the man he never wanted to be and leave the place that was saving him from a worse, but unavoidable fate.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Trigger warnings: Drug abuse, sexual assault, human trafficking, rape, abandonment, brief mention of violence.

Another Note: This is part of a series. Please read in order. Escape is the first novel. Hack is the second novel.

Wowza, this novel was brilliant.

I felt all the emotions, and romance, and tension. It was realistic as it could get.

Leo and Fiona were perfect for each other. Despite some trouble (aka, a love triangle of sorts) and some gang problems and past problems (Leo's and Fiona's), plus caring for a sibling (Fiona), everything worked out well.

I could practically feel the tension and the emotions emerge from the writing, every page I was hooked right in. The writing was superb, chemistry scorching, the drama of the gang (could have been more rough to make it more realistic), and their own past problems, gosh made it all worth it to see their HEA (happy ever after).

No sexy scenes, though. Sorry to disappoint some. But eh, their banter and heavy makeout sessions were worth it.

I am so excited to continue this series. Up next is Rafa's story aka Goldie (if you read the story, you would know), and his girl's story.

Until the next read,

It is a good story. It kept my interest. I was never bored. I read it without taking a break.

The hero and the heroine are likable and sympathetic. I liked that there is no cheating and no sex with OP since meeting. Heroine made out with OM after meeting the hero but it wasn't cheating. They were not a couple at the time. They were faithful to each other during the separation.

The ending is HFN which I am fine with since it is a series.

I would have rated this story 5 stars but it is a clean romance. By a clean romance I mean that the hero and the heroine didn't have sex. They did make out. Maybe it makes me pervey but I want hot sexy times in my romances and that was lacking here. Honestly it surprised me that it was because there is quite a bit of scenes with the hero and the heroine lusting after each other. Also they talked about doing the deed and decent amount of making out scenes with touching. I kept waiting for the hero and the heroine to make love but unfortunately that never happened. It felt like one big tease.

I intend to read the next book in the series as the author confirmed that there is no cheating in that story either.

Beta read.

Meet the Covington Heights Crew. Ruthless, dark and loyal.
Deana Birch brings you a gritty love triangle all about survival.

Deana Birch had me completely hooked from the beginning. I really felt for Fiona because she was just trying to get through each day but the Covington Crew had other ideas. That is one strong woman after everything she went through.

I love Leo! That dude snuck his way into my heart without me even realising.

If you love gang romances then this is the book for you!

Wow this was a darker turn compared to Deana's other books and I was into it. I'm not usually a great fan of the darker side of the romance genre but this was just the right amount to keep me gripped without it being to much. Although we have certain subjects mentioned throughout the book we don't get to read about any of it happening which I was pleased about. Poor Fiona had tried so hard to stay off the gangs radars but one slip up and it turned her life upside down. Leo OMG Leo 😍 what a badass! He was the perfect mix of tough alpha male and panty melting sweetheart. I can't wait to get back into Covington and get to know the rest of the gang.

Love triangle with a twist....

Fiona was just trying to survive and take care of her sister when fate had other ideas. Leo was just trying to stay hidden and under the radar until Fiona showed up.

The connection Fiona and Leo have is off the charts. Then Leo interacted with Fiona sister Violet and you have no choice but swooning.

The groups dynamics and there stories keeps you intrigued and wanting more. This story is unique and a story of strength and fighting for a better life. Definitely a great read.

Fiona wants nothing more than to escape Covington Heights. Living with her drug-addicted mother and taking care of her baby sister, Fiona’s life changes in a blink when she misses her stop on the subway.

Trying to make her way through rival gang territory, Fiona is almost home when she is spotted and pursued. Only after crying for help and being saved by Covington Heights Crew member Leo is she at last safe. Or is she? Discovering her safety comes at a price, Fiona learns the wages she must pay are herself: She must give herself over to the Heights leader Anton. Fiona knows there is no way she is giving herself to Anton, and although she hates Leo for getting her wrapped up in this mess, she also feels a pull toward him.

What a ride! I’ve never read anything by Deana Birch, but I really enjoyed this. Right away I could tell there was intense chemistry between Fiona and Leo. Leo is tall, dark, and hot, and it’s obvious that Anton wanting first dibs on her is driving him crazy. But Leo is second in command, and what Anton says, goes.

And while the vortex of the book centers around the cat and mouse game between Fiona and Leo, there are other story arcs unfolding.

Anton is the boss of the Heights crew, but just how Leo fits in is a mystery. Leo hints that he is only in the Heights to escape something worse; a former life, people, and situations. As a second, Leo defers to Anton, but one can see this is really only a front, for away from prying eyes they are more than equals.

I like how well rounded the characters are, too. Unlike some books in which the characters never shed their one-dimensional selves, Fiona and Leo are easily imagined into reality. Fiona is a firecracker, and Leo is just … well, dreamy. But be warned: Though the book delivers a slow burn, there is no sex, so don't go looking for it.

Escape is book one of this new series, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment in order to get to know this gang of hotties better.

I recently joined a website called Book Sirens. It has eARCs available and what you do is you read them, post a review on the site and on wherever you post books reviews and then you repeat the process. You help out indie authors by spreading the word about their books. It’s a great website and I’ll be sure to post the link to my account at the end of this post if you want to check it out.

I never go for books about gangs. It’s not really a topic I’ve been interested in. But I was intrigued by the gorgeous cover and decided to give this book a shot. And I am so glad I did because I enjoyed the heck out of this book. The Covington Heights crew had this great rule about not harming women and keeping them safe. While they were obviously not a good gang, it’s a good rule to have. Personally, I loved this little gang and I want nothing bad to happen to them ever.

If I could describe this book with just one word it would angst. Lord, this book had so much angst, I was drowning in it. Normally, I would be so annoyed by it especially since the cast of characters are adults but in this case it worked so well. All Leo and Fiona wanted to whenever they saw each other was tear their clothes off. It made for some truly scorching scenes. But I also appreciated that it was just all sex. There was a story behind it all.

Fiona was so great. The love she has for her baby sister warmed my heart. Heed this any authors that potentially want me to read their book, if you have a story involving a strong sister bond, I will read it. No questions asked. All I wanted was for Fiona to get out of Covington Heights and make a better life for her baby sister. I couldn’t ask for a better character.

Overall, I enjoyed this book very much! While the ending was kind of rushed and I expected it to go a little more differently, I liked it nonetheless. There is a second book in this duology, which I think is about a couple of different characters from the Covington Heights crew, that I think I might check out a little bit later. Honestly though, I’m very happy with my first book from Book Sirens and I can’t wait to check out more of what their site offers.

A really enjoyable fast paced story with some unexpected twists!

Fiona is going through a lot. Her mother is almost constantly under the influence of drugs and she has to take care of her baby sister, Violet. She cares very deeply and would do anything for her loved ones, and I loved that about her. Leo is part of The Covington Heights Crew who are criminals that deal with drugs and so on. He doesn't want to be part of it but has no other choice. He might be ruthless when he has to but is a softy from the inside that has just born into the criminal life.

Fiona and Leo's paths cross as she is in danger and he saves her from almost being taken by a rival gang. Although Leo tries his hardest to stay away from Fiona, he can't resist the pull he has towards her. When Fiona's safety is threatened even more, he does everything in his power to try and keep her safe, and I loved that. I really liked Leo, he is deep down super loving. And the way he is with Fiona's baby sister is the sweetest thing, just that alone made me already love him more.

I enjoyed the slow burn enemies to lovers romance between Fiona and Leo. I loved seeing their relationship develop and their feelings changing from hate to more. They have this connection that you could feel through the writing.

There's some really intense things happening with the rival gangs and everything is trying to tare Leo and Fiona apart. The second half of this book definitely made my heart race and I feared for the characters and I loved it more! Overall, this is a good darker romance and I really liked it.

*ARC courtesy of BookSirens*

I picked up this book after a short hiatus from reading and it was exactly what I needed: well written, good pace, interesting and well-rounded characters and a sexy couple to root for!

Which is not to be taken for granted, especially in this type of set-up: young and poor girl needs to take care of herself and her sister - mother is an addict - in a really bad neighborhood with not so many respectable neighbors; to make matters "worse"*drums rolls* she catches the attention of the most badass bad boy of the area.

Usually, in this type of stories I often find myself getting irritated or frustrated by the characters for their cliché and overdo ways but not this time: Fiona and Leo are really the best part of the book.
I liked Fiona resilience as much as her vulnerability. Leo was just all around awesome.

At last, I'd like to thank the author Deana Birch for the chance to read her book for free through BookSirens and I hope she appreciates my honest review

This was a fantastic way to start this series. The boys of Covington Heights is H.O.T! Fiona has stayed off the Covington Heights gang’s radar. She just wants to make a better life for her and her little sister. Leo is running from his past, even though his brother wants him to come back. The only person who knows who he really is, is the boss, Anton. When Fiona has to pay for protection, she gets dragged into a life she wanted to stay out of. Now that she is being protected by the gang, she ends up being “babysat” by Leo. These two butt heads like nobody’s business. Fiona is feisty and snarky towards Leo. Leo is trying to figure out just what it about this woman that pulls him towards her. Deana has written a great enemies to lovers book. This has action, drama, suspense and truths that become revealed. Fiona and Leo have a connection like no one else and they need to figure out what they want. Will Leo’s past get in the way of the future. I loved how this story flowed and all the characters I got to meet. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Life and Love are a Battlefield.

I didn’t know what to expect when I started Escape as it was different from everything I had previously read by Deana Birch. To be honest I was a little nervous through the first few chapters trying to get a gauge on how dark and gritty it would get. The good news is that my main concerns about dubious consent or coercion were quickly put to rest so I could enjoy the story. And I did enjoy it a lot! I liked the introduction of Leo, Rafe, and Anton as those are three heroes the Covington Heights series is built around. Leo is fighting his own battle while also trying to fight for Fiona. As the story unfolds and I learned more about him I fell in love. It helps that he has some crazy killer skills that I find extra attractive. I also loved Fiona and respected her as she navigated a very precarious situation (or life as it is). Both characters were a nice mix of brains and heart.
The story was interesting and kept me engaged right from the start to the very last page. A big positive for me was the pacing. It moved quickly without feeling rushed and delivered a HEA that was well developed and wrapped up in a natural way. Everything might work out and end “perfect” but you don’t get there in a blink of an eye and to me that added authenticity to my reading experience and ability to be content with the ending.
I am really excited to see what comes next in this series!

Fiona lives in Covington Heights but is desperate to escape from her junkie mother, and longs to make a better life for her and her little sister Violet.

When she is threatened by a rival gang, the Covington Heights crew arrange protection. But it comes at a price. A price she is not willing to pay. When Leo begins to shadow her every move, she is at first filled with contempt. But there is a connection between them that they are powerless to resist. They both long to escape the life they seemed destined to live.

In a dramatic climax, Fiona needs all the protection she can find, and Leo doesn't let her down. But will they ever find their way back to each other? Is a new life together even possible?

Deliciously escapist, filled with dark humour and passion, Escape is an exciting and thrilling tale of forbidden love, redemption and revenge.

What a great start to the series.
This was a great read and held my interest till the end.
Fiona and Leo have great sexual tension and there is heaps of drama.
Leo must decide whether he is ready to step up and return to a past he is running from. Can he do this and protect the girl?

We have a HFN rather than a HEA but this being a series I’m ok with that.
Can’t wait for the next book. Things are sure to start heating up and hopefully all that sexual tension will turn into burning hot chemistry.

I was given an ARC but voluntarily chose to review.

Fiona is trying to make a better life for herself and her little sister. The drug dealers have already destroyed their mother. She was doing ok until she came to the attention of Leo. Leo is second in command of a gang. He's always tried to protect Fiona but now it's harder. He wanted out to find a better life but it may be too late. Leo may end up becoming the man he never wanted to be to save Fiona. A great read.

I'm obsessed with The Covington Heights Crew! I want all their stories now!

Deana has created a brilliant world that draws you in from the get go. Gritty, sexy and dangerous.

Leo and Fiona had chemistry off the charts and I loved watching their relationship develop.

A storyline that never stopped, great characters and a HEA. It had everything I wanted and more.

Highly recommend.

I truly enjoyed this book.
The strength that Fi had to have to grow up that way, the determination she had to make sure her sister didn't have the same life, and who wouldn't want Leo in their corner?
Sometimes it hard to outrun destiny, but you can always overcome it.

Well written with the right balance. I'm very much one for books not all being sweetness and light, pretending that bad things don't ever happen, but the balance has to be right with how much detail you go into, and that balance is derived from the tone of the whole book - the balance was spot on. Really liked the characters and absolutely agree with women standing up for themselves and having some sass. Did feel a little bit sorry for Anton, but only a little, his tactics leave a lot to be desired. Can't wait to see what else the boys get up to. I received an ARC for an honest and voluntary review.

Let’s talk Covington Heights because Escape is only book one in a brand new series by Ms. Birch that is a sharp deviation from her deliciously sexy contemporary romances. In this series Ms. Birch dives deep into the underbelly of illegal activity and gangs. Rivalries, drugs, threats, and assault are all on the table all the time for the Covington Heights crew.

Escape focuses on Leo and Fiona. She is a poor girl who grew up in the center of a crime-riddled neighborhood, the child of a drug addicted mother. One of the crew’s best clients actually. She has made a vow to work her way out of the seedy corner of the world where she lives and will make a better life for her and her sister. As long as she can make it out alive and with the one thing left intact she has been guarding the closest.

And Leo… well. He pretty much thinks that Covington Heights is as good as he will get. He gets to live in a swanky apartment in the run down building that the leader of the gang, Anton, has renovated to look more like it belongs on 5th avenue than in the middle of the hood, has the respect (and fear, let’s be honest) of the crew he helps Anton run, and he gets to bang whatever hot piece of tail shimmies across his radar.

That is until a girl who has never before piqued his interest runs into the middle of the courtyard where the group sets up shop selling their drugs with a rival gang hot on her heels. One with far less scruples than Covington Heights has. One that will sell her into the trafficking trade they are so fond of… but only once they are done with her themselves.

Now Leo is charged with keeping the other crew at bay and protecting a smart mouth girl who simultaneously needs the safety the Covington Heights crew offers and completely eschews the men and their existence.

But the looming threat closes in and soon even the protection Leo had offered falters and Fiona is left vulnerable, prey to be picked up by the nearest predator.

With no job and no means of escape Fiona Thompson was trapped at Covington Heights.
Covington Heights was ruled by criminals and drug dealers and the police gave it a wide berth, Fiona lived there with her drug addict mother and her baby sister Violet, she had been desperately trying to save what little she earned to make a better life for herself and Violet, she would never leave Violet with her mother and her mother had yet again made her late for work and she had lost her job and with it all hope.
Covington Heights was protected, for a fee, by a crew of drug dealers whose mandate was keeping fit, eating healthy and making money.
When Fiona was accosted by a rival gang from Derwent Heights she was saved by the crew but there was a price to pay, she was to be the property of crew leader Anton, Leo, his second in command was attracted to Fiona and that could only mean trouble.
This story beautifully illustrates the love that can grow between two very different people, troubled but feisty Fiona and ultra fit Leo with a past that he wanted to stay hidden.
The story also draws you into the life of drugs and gang rivalry, the loyalty of the gang members, the utter desolation of being stuck in a place like Covington Heights, the degrading methods of payment for protection.
Can Fiona escape the well organised human trafficking gang, will Leo or Anton save her.
This is a real action packed page turner and I am looking forward to reading about the lives of the other crew members.

I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. The story had me completely intrigued from the very beginning and I struggled to put it down.

It was definitely a slow burner on the romance scale and I loved the back and forth between Leo and Fiona. They had heaps of chemistry between them and I loved the addition of Andre in the mix as well.

This was kinda more of a ya novel with a touch of NA elements There was talks of rape, trafficking and drug use but in regards to steam levels, unfortunately there wasn’t any which was a little disappointing.

As I said, I really enjoyed this book although I do have a few criticisms which prevented this book being a five star read. I felt like there was quite a bit missing from the story.
There was a serious lack of character descriptions. I struggled to picture the characters and this is so important for me! We didn’t find out how old her baby sister was until 90% and that irritated me cause I spent nearly the whole book trying to figure out how old she was. Unless I missed it somewhere earlier?!
It seemed like Andre and Leo had a past together, well it was implied, but you never got any back story to it.

And on a completely seperate note, It irritated me that Fiona kept leaving her baby sister with her mum. She never expressed any concern about it!

But apart from those few criticisms, it was a great read.

"I need to get lost, Leo. And you're the perfect maze."

I don't usually highlight passages or quotes in a book. Well, I never did before this book. But that quote jumped out at me and perfectly sums up the relationship between Fiona and Leo. Fiona is the daughter of a drug addict single mother. She is the only person keeping the family afloat and caring for her infant younger sister. They live in the projects, Covington Heights, and all Fiona wants for her life is to be able to get away. Leo is part of the Covington Heights crew, a gang whose turf is the project where Fiona lives. Fiona needs protection, but Leo is hiding something important about himself.

This story is really captivating in that I was quickly invested in the characters and what was happening with them. I rooted for Fiona and desperately wanted to uncover Leo's secrets.

My biggest issue was that I was under the impression this was, at its heart, a romance novel. I can take romantic suspense or romantic mystery, but there has to be a love story. These characters had a lot stacked against them and never really developed a true relationship. The last couple of chapters felt like a rushed resolution but the readers don't really get to truly see it. It kind of happens off the page. To earn more stars from me, I want to see the romance.

The cover and the blurb caught my interest and I was looking for a new book that wasn’t my usual go-to. I am so glad that I read this book because I was introduced to a new author and a world full of hot ripped a-holes who are ruthless, dark, and have a soft spot for strong women.

Escape is the forbidden romance story between Fiona Thompson and Leo Ricci. Covington Heights is located in the projects north of New York. This book takes you through the life of a gang member and a struggling woman who lives in the community where the gang lives and protects.

Fiona Thompson finds herself in need of the crew’s protection and is willing to do what it takes to protect and provide for herself and her family. Her spit fire temperament and her take no crap attitude gives Leo a run for his money. Leo Ricci is the right hand man to Covington heights leader, Anton Myers, and his story is a mystery that unfolds the more he spends time with Fiona. He struggles with the realization that he is the man that his father raised him to be and that he should accept his fate, especially when Fiona is in danger.

This book is filled with danger, sarcasm, lust, and alpha males. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something new to read and isn’t afraid of a little gang action. I am hooked on this couple and can’t wait to read what happens next in Covington Heights in the next book.

I'm having a really hard time trying to gather my thoughts about this book. I was expecting to read a story of a crew who are drug dealers and run a territory and yet I got a group of criminals with morals. Even though the author tried to convince us in the beginning that they were hardened criminals to me they seemed pliant and docile. They came across as the good guys in comparison to the rival gang who terrorize, rape and are into human trafficking. The leader was not at all convincing. He came across as cold and without compassion throughout the book but had his feelings hurt by the heroine for not choosing him. And I'm like huh?? He didn't want her anyway.

Even though the story started off interesting in the first few chapters the pacing is too slow for me and at some point it seemed to drag. All we got for most of the story is the heroine's thirst for a new life for her and the baby sister away from her drug addict mother. The second in command is attracted to her and apart from a few stolen kisses he never truly acts on it until the very last chapter which for me ended abruptly.

I gave this story 3 stars because it is well written and the main characters are very likable.

I really enjoyed this story and the premise of the book. Though not necessarily original this was a compelling romance with a lot of heart. I generally prefer plenty of steam in my romances, which this did not have in terms of on page love scenes. Leo and Fiona have great chemistry and the sexual tension and intrigue was strong between them, so it would have made it a juicier read. But I found that I did not mind that so much. It was definitely different for me.

It starts off as a cliched story of a young woman, Fiona, with a drug addicted mother, and a young sibling to care for, trying to make it in the projects. She catches the attention of the crew of men, specifically one in particular, Leo, who run the neighborhood. It's a rough and gritty world and there are some triggers in this. There's actually many layers to the story that unfold into an exciting and well paced plot. There are great supporting characters as well that I am interested in getting more of, specifically Anton and Frankie. The blurb doesn't give too much away, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but this story drew me in from the start and blew me away. Great read.

I loved this book!

Wow! What a wonderful story! I always liked to read stories about bad guys, in gangs, or the mafia, but the ones I found were always so erotic, and everything was about sex and lust, and violence.
But this book managed to feel dangerous, and yes there was violence, but wasn't gore. The character lusted after the other, but it wasn't all about that.
I loved Leo and Fiona, they had such beautiful arcs, their chemistry was awesome, the tension between them so enjoyable. The side character made the story only stronger. Fiona was strong but also femine, and vulnerable. She had her flaws, but she also admited her mistakes.
Leo was raised to be be excellent, and hiding that wasn't easy. The way he treated Fiona's little sister warmed my heart, and how much he worried about Fiona was so sweet.
I felt the butterflies and the connection, the hurt and the loss.
The plot was very nicely bulit, the writting clean and the author managed to write their voices in a way that you knew who wose chapter you were reading. She gave a lot of details using very few words. They do swear a lot, but it just made them feel more real.
There are make out scenes, but not sex scenes, which for me is a breath of fresh air. I can't wait to read the rest of the books on this series!

What's it like living in the hood, with drug dealers for neighbors? Fiona knows, and she hates it. She's trying to protect her baby sister from the life and their junkie mother. One day, when rival gang members chase Fiona home and she shouts for help, she puts herself in debt to the Covington Heights crew, and the second in command, Leo.

The relationship between Fiona and Leo is tense because Fiona doesn't want to like a member of the crew, even though she finds herself connecting to him. And it's complicated by Anton, who is the head of the crew, and has "first dibs" on Fiona.

What I didn't really like about the book, which is why I didn't give it a five star review, is that it almost seems to glorify the protection given to girls by the male gang members. Even though Fiona seems independent and wants to get out, the crew look at her and the other women as property. I also found some incidents too over the top, but in order to not share spoilers, I'll just say some of the events of the book seemed unrealistic.

Overall, the book was good, and I enjoyed reading it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

okay i’ve been in a serious book funk and this book was honestly so fresh, new and invigorating 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵 but be warned fellow readers this book doesn’t have any sex scenes 😫🤭😳😳😳😔 i know i know but hear me out!!! this author is super talented! this was my first read and i’m tempted to go into book two or other works of hers!!! this story even made me laugh out loud! it’s not seamless in its delivery but the character development is spot on! everyone was unique and ...i mean you get ghetto living, a weird semi-triangle effect, gang families, a pretty tough ass balls heroine! fiona didn’t take shit but she was a very grounded character 😍😍😍 she was the right balance of having a back bone but still being very feminine and needing affection which was so cool for me!!

leo 🤤 😳🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵💕 my my my leo was just like espionage gangster hitman romeo asshole sarcastic i mean he was a very well fleshed out character. this book will not be for everyone but i was here for it and check this out guys i actually finished it!!!! 💀 first book in weeks!!!!! i’m obsessed. i had to lower the rating because no sex scene and it was way too many times this writer was taking the Lords name in vain. so ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really enjoyed this story from the first couple of pages. It kept getting better and better the further I got into the book.

Loved the leading characters. They both showed their strong sides but also at different times they also showed their vulnerable sides which was great. I really liked Leo and how he was with Violet.

The secondary characters were also really engaging and made the whole story work instead of leaving it for the two main characters.

The story line was really interesting and it was great when we started to meet more of Leo's family and their dynamics. It kept me grabbing my kindle every chance I had.

This was my first book by this Author and i have to say I will need to go and check out her other books as I loved the way she wrote and kept things moving at a good pace throughout the book.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading Escape. It turned out to be a twisty, rollercoaster ride and I found myself drawn into the story more and more as I turned the pages.

I enjoyed the love/hate relationship between Fiona and Leo. They were both struggling with trying not to be like their parents, but their situations made that difficult. It was hard for both of them to let their guards down and let another person in. The slow burn between them is worth the wait.

Leo was such an enigma at first that I had as much trouble figuring him out as Fiona did. Underneath the cold exterior, he had a caring heart that he showed with both Fiona and her baby sister, Violet. Fiona’s heart was obvious by the way she put Violet first. She had to be hard to survive, but she softened so much under Leo’s care.

Escape took me on twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and I loved the unexpected angst. I’m looking forward to the next book in the Covington Heights series.
