A chance encounter and one night of passion leads to a mutually beneficial arrangement for two souls from different worlds. When love creeps into the equation, neither is sure how to feel or what to do. The only thing either is certain of, is their need for the other.
Set is book one of the Them Boys novella series.
This novella includes strong sexual content and profanity. If these elements do not appeal to you, this may not be the read for you.
About the author A true southern girl, Alexandria House has an affinity for a good banana pudding, Neo Soul music, and tall black men in suits. When this music-loving fashionista is not shopping, she's writing steamy stories about real black love.
I needed an audiobook to listen to as I was cleaning and when I tell you I fell in love!!! 😭
This was such a damn good story! I was obsessed with these two. Better yet, I loved how obsessed they were with each other.
Their plan was to just be fuck buddies and it stayed that way for 3 years, but both developed feelings in the process.
The sex? Too good. The emotional connection they developed because of it?? 🫠 These two had me close to tearing up.
I loved that it followed older characters, both were single parents, had their own businesses and baggages. We would get flashbacks to the time they spend together and it was so needed. It fleshed out their characters beautifully!
They made so much sense and couldn’t stay away from each other and I love romances like that.
I loved this novella so much. It is HOT (like, seriously filthy) and the hero just worships the heroine. He had a crush on her while they were high school classmates!! He was the bad boy and she was a good girl 😍 Onto book 2!
Damn, damn, damn! Why ya'll aint tell me this book was this sexy?!? I was listening to the audiobook while working and silently praying that no one could hear what was coming out of my headphones. I'm sad that I waited so long to start this book especially since I've read and love a good portion of what Alexandria House has done with her other books. Set has such an interesting premise where readers follow Set and Kareema. The two reunite at a high school reunion when Kareema is left solo by a close friend. Set had a bad reputation in the past so she's initially hesitant about interacting with him, but the two find that they have a lot in common. What ensues is a world wind adventure of spending weekends together fulfilling their physical desires. Of course, the one night stand doesn't last long as the two begin to grow feelings for each other.
What I loved most about this novella was the pacing. In such a short amount of time, House gets readers invested in the main characters, their romance, as well as the side characters. Set is extremely supportive of Kareema which is something that she needs while dealing with a problematic ex and a child that is struggling to figure out adulthood. I felt satisfied with the shortness of the story which speaks highly to House's writing skills. And the steam!! Oh my gosh, it had my smiling from ear to ear making me want to send a few messages of my own. I love when a romance author is not only able to give us the hottest moment, but also incorporates a cohesive plot.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series!
I was in the mood for a smutty novella and I’ve heard good things about Set so I just had to read it. Set was so sexy and delivered all the smut. Kareema and Set were on fire. I got my needs satisfied. The story was fabulous too. How these two met and how they craved each other was insane. Set is all alpha but with a good heart. He just wants Kareema. Their background story was interesting and the other characters especially Set’s younger brother Jah and Kareema’s BF Tricia were terrific. I’m definitely reading the other books cause I’m now a fan of this author and the Mitchell brothers.
This was a super quick novella (only 3 hours on audio) and it was so fun! There was definitely a lot more dirty talk and steam than I was expecting, but I enjoyed this romance! Set and Kareema had a friends with benefits situation going on before they fell for each other. I do think the flashbacks felt a bit jumpy since this was so short, but other than that, I enjoyed the romance and how Set and Kareema met and instantly clicked! Even though it was short, there was a lot of past and depth to these characters and I enjoyed how they started opening up to one another!
This was an amazing read! I liked the writing and the premise, just a plain 'bad boy + good girl' story, with mature characters who both had some very serious baggage and who behaved like actual adults. There was a lot of depth to these characters (considering it is a steamy novella), which I really loved. He already had a crush on her while they were in high school and now they meet after 20 years...
This is my first read by Ms. House and yes 🥵 I’m not normally a novella fan but I listened to this while I worked out today & I can’t wait to read the other two books in this series 🤭
This was a quick and steamy read that was a lot of fun for me, minus some controlling aspect of the love interest that our MC just went along with. Kareema was hella stubborn, and at one point I wanted to shake her, like sis, don't let that man go dummy! In spite of the control issues though, Set was otherwise sexy, quirky, gruff and caring and I really did like him.
We’ll hot DAYUM! Sugar & all kinds of spice in this story!! I’m a sucker for second chance and man did AH deliver! Set is as nasty as they come and I do mean that in the most delicious way. He had Kareema going every which way until finally she realized that she could indeed open herself up to marriage again. It just hits right when it’s with the right person. Set Mitchell may not have noticed Kareema 20 years ago, but the earth tilted for him at their HS reunion. I love damaged characters that open their hearts to love and allow the cracks to start filling in. Love, love, love this story!
Great pacing for a novella, but I’m very disappointed about the plot. 👀 it was…? Just fine? Nothing really extraordinary about it, and the smut was okay.
didn't expect this novella to be so complete and soo good. What was supposed to be a ONS, turned into a friends with benefits. But lines got blurred, and feelings got involved. But it was expected cause it's been 3 years since this little arrangement. Kareema was a single mother to an adult daughter, running a successful daycare, but life was a little mundane for her. Set, although grown, was still troubled, dealing with the remnant of his father's abuse. But when these two got together, things were all right. They were each other's escape. These two formed such a special bond and had such great emotional connection. Don't even get me started on the sex. I love that the couple was mature, both with adult kids, both with baggage they're dealing with. This was a super cute short gem, a FWB to lovers done right.
Mmmm, Set Mitchell! Set and Kareema are older, and met at their high school reunion. One thing leads to another, and they have a one night stand. Even though they live in two different places, they enjoy it so much that about once a month, they fly to an agreed upon location to spend the weekend together. However, this time Set invites Kareema to his home for the weekend. These two have been in this friends with benefits arrangement for a few years...but what happens when both of them catch feelings and no one wants to speak up?
This book was HOOOOOOOOT. I loved the set up. It was grown and sexy. Both had their reasons for not wanting to reveal their true feelings. It was so satisfying when they realized they loved each other. The flashbacks to some of their weekends together were a cool touch because it basically showed you how these two have probably been in love from the start, but didn't want to say so.
DEFINITELY recommend, and the audio was FIRE.
TROPES: black romance/BIPOC/OWN voices; older H/h; friends with benefits/friends to lovers
i loved this book so much!!! Set and Kareema went to the same High School and Kareema steered clear from Set because of the rumors that were spread about Set and his brothers!
20 years later at the high school reunion these two meet again and the attraction is electric! they enter a mutual friends and benefits relationship and aren’t expecting it to be anything more... but we all know how that goes! set was completely whipped by kareema.
so so so steamy and so so intriguing! can’t wait to read the other books in the series!
2.5. Too much sex for how short this is so the character development suffered. Set (the male MC) decides everything and is overprotective as usual for this author. I liked Kareema but I felt her storylines were not really wrapped up. I did not like the back and forth in the timeline, too many flashbacks and since most scenes take place in bed I was lost sometimes.
It was an easy and entertaining read but this wasn't good. Although judging by the average rating, this seems to be a me problem.
Here's my brain dump in messy bullet point format: - The sex scenes were alright but at one stage he hit her cervix and it felt good? Let me tell you I physically recoiled. I think the fuck not Sir. - Also, do squirters squirt every single time they have sex? (Now that's a sentence I never thought I'd write). Sounds sus. - Set makes all the decisions and Kareema is just like "okay" even thought it's not okay? Like I get the alpha-male thing and can most definitely get behind it ... when it's done right. This was just a whole lot of Toxic Masculinity and not much else. - All they ever do is have sex and somehow they still manage to fall in love? We're told they talk about things but we're never shown them doing anything other than having sex or Set imposing his will on Kareema. - Set needs some certified therapy. Like for real.
Yesterday I was looking for a short novella to listen to at work and I saw Alexandria House had trilogy with Jakobi Diem narrating and I was sold. Seriously, I could listen to Jakobi read me my grocery list and I would be in heaven.
Kareema and Set's relationship was hot AF from the start and just got hotter. For such a short story I never felt like anything was lacking. The way she jumped back and forth from past to present gave me a deeper look at their more intimate moments. At how they fell in love over the course of three-year relationship.
Wesleigh Siobhan and Jakobi Diem are automatic buys for me. Their narrations always entice me and make me swoon.
Jah's story is next and baby I think his is going to be really good.
Come through Set and Kareema!! Alexandria House is moving her way high up my “favorite author” list. I loved their chemistry…swoon🥰. I do feel like the story started in the middle as if there’s a beginning missing and I wish there was more character development. Overall I really enjoyed their story. Ready to see what his brothers have to offer.
”Lay on my back.” “Why you always want me to lay on you?” “Why you always asking me that?” “Because you never answer me.” “Fine. Because you feel good. Come on, now.” I could hear her smile as she said, “Well, turn over so I can lay on the front of you. Lying on your back always seems strange.” “Ain’t nothing strange about feeling your titties on my back.” “Wow, you really love these midgets, don’t you?” “Mm-hmm.” A second later, she was on me and I moaned a little. “You are so damn strange, Set Mitchell.” “You like it.” “Maybe…hey, are you lying in the wet spot.” “Yep, and I love it. I love how messy your pussy is. Just be squirting all over the place.” “It’s gonna soak through to your mattress.” “Good.” “See, weird.” “Mm-hmm.”
i liked only one scene lmao. this aint bad, ott mostly
The friends with benefits was friends with benefiting, but 3 years?!? They both wanted more and couldn’t admit it to themselves or the other person. I enjoyed how their relationship developed, and thankfully neither let fear hold them back. Kareema's daughter really got on my nerves, but Kareema stood her ground. This entire series was quick and good, I enjoyed it1
Holy moly 🤤🥵🔥 I need a fan and a mint julep after that! This book is hot hot hot!! And with Jakobi Diem narrating bringing to life every grunt and moan... sorry I’m getting carried away. Just read this book, better yet, listen to the audiobook! *fans self*
this book was an absolute *cough cough* to listen too. i did the audiobook version because my friend recommend it and at first i was like ehh but glad i did it .
amazing book. nasty and turned on sex scenes lol. i’m glad i had my headphones in because baby can’t be listening to this in public lol
loved how there were both obsessed with each other and loved that Set was all the way down for his girl.
will be listening to the series this week with the other mitchell boys 😎
