All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster—a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.
As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed "Black Heart," she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing—and some of her own to do so as well.
With Camden's court-marital looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope—and to each other—if they want to survive.
Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary. She and her family make their home in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. You can learn more about her and her stories at www.RoseannaMWhite.com. see also Roseanna White
This book was a-ma-zing!! I adore Roseanna M. White's books and if you asked me to pick a fave, I'd go into an intense bookwormish sort of analysis paralysis. lol! But truly, this one would be right up there at the top. I. love. Phillip. Wounded heroes are always my favorite, but there's something extra enticing and intriguing about this fallen pilot called Black Heart. And Arabelle is a fantastic, strong, and sympathetic heroine. The plot moves at a great pace - fast enough to keep me turning pages, but not so quickly that we don't have time to breathe and enjoy the poignant and romantic moments. I loved the build to the final act, the excitement, the history, the codebreaking aspect...all of it. And the spiritual angle is beautifully done...definitely one of the most impacting books I've read lately.
I read it in a day and now I feel a little bereft because what's a girl to do as she waits for the next in the series...?!?! (Probably go back and reread some of Roseanna's earlier books, that's what. haha!)
*Book provided by the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
It’s intimidating to write a review for a book you love so well...I had super high expectations for this book and it blasted through them all in the best way possible. The layering of the story elements is masterful and reminds me of some of my favorite vintage writers. I don’t know how she does it, but the characters are rounded and polished and hop right off the page. The way Ara meets the Black Heart is just so interesting and sparks off a very unusual alliance between the two when Ara’s fiancé becomes their common antagonist.
The chemistry with this romantic pair is so thick you can cut it with a knife but of course neither of them see that at first. They in fact never dream of romance to begin with, and I loved that about them. Phillip is a haunted man and doesn’t think he’s really worthy to live. Someone’s threatening him and he couldn’t care less because he thinks the same things about himself.
Then a counter-spy plot pops up and both Ara and Phillip have to work together to save their country from the threat. This is when things really tick up and I seriously couldn’t put the book down.
Phillip’s mother is a spice box and one of my favorite characters...I love it when even the side characters hop off the page! Ara’s also friends with the ladies from the previous Ladies of the Manor series and I got super excited when Barclay from the Shadows Over England series made a couple of appearances.
Overall, it’s already going on my favorites list, so great job to Roseanna White. I can’t wait for the next in the series!
Thanks to the publisher and author for a free reading copy.
Author Roseanna White never disappoints, I'm not sure how she does it but each book seems to top her last one. This is the second book in her Codebreakers series and WOW! The author's writing style just blows me away, I don't know how she pens such a marvelous spellbinding story each time but she does. There are tie-in characters from the first book but if this is the first book your reading it's explained very well so you'll be able to get right into the book. Beautiful story of redemption and forgiveness . Set during World War I in England filled with codebreakers, threats and fraught with danger this fantastic historical will have you racing to finish the pages between the covers. Highly recommended!
Published January 7th 2020 by Bethany House Publishers I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
I just need a second to gush! Y'ALL THIS BOOK WAS AMAZEBALLS! So stinkin' good, and such a great way to start off the reading year!
Roseanna is a crazy talented author. I don't think she has written a book I haven't liked. She writes such unique and REAL characters, they're just so easy to fall in love with! Not many authors can take the risks she does and pull them off.
This book was no different! I loved every one of the characters! They each played their part perfectly! The villains, the leads, the side characters. They blended and meshed so well.
I just loved everything about this book! It was deep. It was light. It was emotional. It was humorous. It was the perfect blend of history and fiction.
Phillip Camden was the best! 😍😍 New favorite hero right there! Arabelle was his perfect match, the perfect leading lady. They complemented each other so well. Each learning that what THEY defined themselves as was not who they were. They built each other up, and was a shoulder to cry on when they needed one. There was so much emotion and they both grew so much throughout the story. PLUS! They're chemistry and banter was EVERYTHING!
One thing that I've noticed in this series, and something I love with my WHOLE heart, is that the women pray for the men. Even before they know who he is, or that they'll end up together. I just ADORE that thread so much. (it could be also in her other series too and I just didn't realize it)
I will be gushing about this book always! There are so many things I didn't even touch on in my review. It was just so amazing, and you all need to go order it! I want to give this book all the stars, but alas I can only give it 5. So you should know what my rating is! 5/5 stars!
*I received this book from the publisher**All opinions are my own*
Yes, those read dates are correct for this book. I literally finished the audiobook, then started it over again and listened to it a second time right in a row. It's that good.
Roseanna M. White is one of my auto-buy authors. She's one of the top Christian historical fiction writers I know for writing such a great blend of slow but swoony romance, great historical details, enough action and adventure and danger to make the books fast-paced and interesting, characters that have a real depth and life to them, and deep Christian themes to top it all off.
Yet every time I think her previous book is her best one yet, she surprises me by writing a still even more fantastic book. I simply adored this one. Ara and Philip are such a compelling duo. Philip especially has so much growing to do in this book, but Ara also learns more subtle lessons about giving up her own dreams as well.
I especially adored all the cameos by characters from this author's previous series. It makes all the series feel like they are set in a real Great Britain where it is possible for the Duke of Stafford to bump into Philip Camden. I loved all the little updates on their lives that we got. I also loved that Margot and Barclay both had a role to play in this book as well. I love that this author isn't afraid to have her previous characters like Margot and Barclay take a hand and do what they do best instead of falling into the trap that some authors do of having their main characters do everything for the plot at the expense of previous characters.
This book is so good. The audiobook is excellent (really, I listened to it twice in a row, it's that good).
I loved this story so much, especially the characters: the tortured bad boy and the good girl were convincing and relatable. I particularly loved the theme of grace as represented by heroine. Such a beautiful picture of what each of us could be of we let God work in us.
From the moment I met Philip Camden in Number of Love, I knew he was something special. He bursted bitterly on the scene with a fantastic hook of a past and basically threw cold water of Margot and Drake's burgeoning relationship and I loved it. Inspy fiction so RARELY gets a Philip Camden. In On Wings of Devotion, we see the more vulnerable side underneath the steely exterior of a man awaiting court martial and probably firing squad for the elimination of his entire squadron. He bides his time at Room 40 working with Margot De Wilde ( nice to see her back) and decoding encrypted German messages.
Enter Arabelle, a nurse at a nearby Charing Cross hospital, and a dark and horrible secret that binds their two families together.
If Camden is an outlier in CBA hero traits, so Arabelle is the perfect mix of strength and kindness. No spunky beauty here who knocks him off his feet. No, it is her values, her unwavering intelligence and her strength--as well as her ability to see beneath his cultivated exterior. The intrigue plot and villain take second place ( and rightly so ) to two people finding themselves in the midst of war and pairing so remarkably that they become two halves of the same puzzle piece.
Dang. This series and these characters just keep getting better!
I loved Arabelle and could relate so much to her. And Phillip is her perfect match. I can't say I adored Phillip, as he isn't usually the kind of guy I like, but his character was nonetheless fabulous and I loved him, even if I didn't love him, ya know? ;)
White's writing style is as beautiful as ever. I instantly feel like I'm living in the time period with the authentic and historically accurate dialogue and descriptions. The history lessons White includes are so fascinating as well, and never dry or boring or interrupting the story.
Speaking of story, from page one I was draw into the story and couldn't put it down! Even the slower moments kept my interest and the fast-paced suspenseful moments had my heart racing.
All in all, I greatly enjoyed book two in The Codebreakers series, and can't wait to get my hands on book #3! I cannot recommend this enough if you are a lover of rich and fascinating historical fiction with a side of romance, espionage, and suspense. You definitely want to check this one out!
FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
what a wonderful story and the hero? FANTASTIC! White does an amazing job of making this hero raw, real, and completely redeemable, and the heroine can handle him, perfectly. She was steady and, oh so good, but not a weakling at all. In fact, she gets the chance to give a deserving someone a shiner, and that made me love her all the more. The storyline, complete with adventure and espionage, kept the pace moving forward and the romance sizzled between the two of them as their very unexpected friendship begins to take an equally unexpected turn. I'm always a fan of Roseanna White's books, but this may be one of my favorites of hers!
Seemingly underestimated, unnoticed, and underappreciated, Arabelle's Denler's broken engagement gave one more indication that she was never going to measure up. After all, her nursing career could provide fulfillment; it could, it absolutely could . . . .until a pilot with a broken spirit lands on her doorstep and opens up an infinity of possibilities.
Major Phillip Camden, dubbed Black Heart for the mistake that he would always regret, knows that he is fortunate to be among the living. Number one; he was the lone survivor of a mission that took the lives of his entire squadron and number two; his court martial was postponed amidst public protest in order for him to serve as a codebreaker for the Admiralty. But when an entirely different kind of assignment presents itself, the young woman whose life he disrupts manages to elude common bitterness in order to choose grace in its stead. What kind of person determines to be "better despite (her) circumstances"? Arabelle Denler testifes that it is God's unconditional love, alive in her heart, that makes all the difference.
While Ara and Phillip cautiously approach a deepening friendship, Phillip's past reappears in the sultry form of one whose sole purpose is to wreak havoc, until death; tossing their fragile relationship to the very edges of its boundaries and sending Phillip to his knees.
Written with this author's unmistakably smooth style, "On Wings of Devotion" exalts the mighty healing power of a God who can transform the darkest of hearts and assure the lonely ones of His everlasting presence.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
On Wings of Devotion is the second story in The Codebreakers series, and oh my word is it amazing! Confession here, I’m not much of a re-reader of novels, but after I reached the satisfying ‘The End’, I had the overwhelming urge to flip back to page one and devour the book all over again.
The interactions between the brooding, mad-at-the-world pilot, Phillip Camden, and the tenderhearted, Jesus-loving nurse, Arabelle Denler, were brilliant. Their witty banter made me chuckle while their heart-to-heart chats made me root for the success of their love story. And I’m going to go on record and say this story has one of the BEST kissing scenes I’ve ever read. And folks, I’m a romance junkie. It was just…all the sighs.
Add in the drama and suspense of WWI in England and you have a stellar story not to be forgotten!
** I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
Two lovely leads in this second novel of The Codebreakers series. Major Phillip Camden is surly and disliked by his nation for causing the death of several pilots. Underneath all of that is a gentleman of high character with a delightful sense of humor. Arabelle Denler is a nurse that is incredibly wealthy and kind hearted.
The plot at the beginning of the novel was delightful. A purely enjoyable read throughout.
Oh my heart! This book completely blew me away. Roseanna’s books are such a comfort to me. I love the depth and detail to her characters and plots, and the absolutely beautiful way she weaves Scriptural truths into her stories. And per usual, the romance had me melting.
Arabelle and Phillip are such amazing characters - definitely some of Roseanna’s best. I just adore Arabelle. Her faith and compassion for others extends beyond her job as a nurse; it’s who she is. She is quick to lend a hand, to defend, and to pray (and sometimes quick to have a temper). She inspires me to become a better woman. And Phillip… I do love a brooding hero with a heart of gold. He is incredibly charming, though you can feel the heaviness of his guilt and regret right from the start. I love that Arabelle is a steady presence as he begins to wrestle with those feelings and reconciles with God. His first instinct is always to protect, and I especially love how that trait is displayed in his relationship with Arabelle.
Arabelle and Phillip begin their relationship as friends, but the chemistry between them so strong you know it couldn’t have stayed that way. They are perfect compliments for each other and I loved watching their friendship deepen into more. The quick, witty banter between the two is balanced beautifully with heartfelt and tender moments (I do love that he calls her “darling”). Their loyalty and desire to protect one another was so sweet and romantic; there is no doubt of their love for the other.
The suspense in this book was wild! I loved watching it play out and the little details revealed. The way all the tension came together at the end was so worth seeing after all that build up.
I also loved getting glimpses of my other favorite couples from her previous books… not quite the full (or novella) length follow up I wish for, but it was still really lovely to see how they were getting on.♡
Roseanna M. White has talent for writing characters that are so beautifully developed! Each and every character in this book has a distinctive personality. Phillip Camden is one of the best heroes I've ever read. First I love "bad boys" who know how to charm the ladies. Camden does that from the first chapter. Oh, the first chapter is adorable! Second, he has a heart of gold. I just about melted to the floor when he professed his love and when he brought Ara a gift (No spoilers here). The historical details were very interesting. War is awful! It ruins lives and It devastates family's. But thank God for Romans 8:28! The spiritual aspects in all of White's novels ring true. In this book I love how Camden returned to the Lord. Having a prodigal child and being reminded that even when you teach and train and love them in the ways of the Lord sometimes they still go astray and live in sin. And, that there is still hope of redemption but that God will bring them low to get their full attention on Him like He did Cam in this story. Entertaining? For sure, but thoughtful and spiritually encouraging as well! I would recommend this novel and ALL of White's novels to readers of romance, fiction, and history!
What a SPELLBINDING read! This book had more twists and turns than an Ozarks road and was enthralling read from start to finish. Ara was quite a likable character and don't even get me started on our tortured hero/villain Phillip Camden...which will he turn out to be?!?! Roseanna wove quite the tale of romance, mystery and intrigue. Be forewarned: once you start this book-putting it down will be nearly impossible. Can't wait for more of this series!
I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Fantastic! There were so many things that I absolutely loved about this book! First, the storyline immediately drew me in, held my attention, and kept me guessing until the very end. Roseanna White is such a talented writer and has a way of making history come alive within the pages.
Second, I loved the characters, especially Phillip and Arabella. Phillip Camden is one of my favorite all-time heroes. I loved how he was so protective of Arabella. Although they weren’t perfect and were broken in their own ways, they were perfect for each other. I also thought Arabella had such a beautiful and forgiving heart.
Lastly, I loved that it had elements of faith wound throughout the storyline.
Eeep! Squeal! Eeeepquealll!!! I have permanent creases on my face from all the nose-dive swooning onto my fainting couch. Phillip Camden is not a monster, y'all! Tortured soul? Yes. A bit sullen and brooding? Definitely. Running from God? You bet. But none of that makes him a monster and Ara knows that right from the start...and, of course, so did I. :-) Hence all the swooning. Honestly, I'm thinking of turning it into a form of cardio exercise for bibliophiles because you use all kinds of muscles to heft yourself up from a prone position. Over and over again. I could start rating books by cardio-swoons. Beginners. Intermediate. Advanced. On Wings of Devotion would be at an Olympic level, though. What a workout!
So -- yes -- while I'm crazy rambling in my befuddled post-read haze I might as well step onto my soap box and holler praise through a megaphone in the hopes of getting the attention of Christian publishers everywhere. Yes, folks, it is absolutely possible to deliver a heart-pounding, page-turning, history-steeped romance with lots of sizzle and sparkle that also includes a significant, life-altering faith thread! Faith. Mercy. Forgiveness. Complete surrender to God's will. It's all here, provocatively challenging characters and readers alike.
Ahem...stepping off soap box now, feeling mildly embarrassed but also distracted because if I turn the box on its side -- voila -- I have the perfect shelf for books. Yes, I might have lost my mind in 1918 London. Hence this slaphappy review. I'll try to pull my thoughts together.
So...Ara is...unexpected. She's everything she appears to be with a whole lot more crackling beneath the surface just waiting to get out. She's dutiful daughter and dedicated nurse and kind and generous. Her faith drives her. The Spirit guides her and she's not just being led to the 'Black Heart', she's being thrown into his path! I'm breaking out in goosebumpish chills just thinking about it.
There's masterful storytelling here. From historical details to pacing to quips and banter and heart-to-hearts. And there's so much that is unexpected. Ara is a genteel young woman...until she burst-out-loud-laughing isn't. The mystery that surrounds Camden -- I thought things were going in one direction...until they veered off course. Every twist, every turn led me deeper into the story -- immersing me in intrigue and emotion and surprising me over and over again.
Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
Oh -- I listened to the audible version narrated by Susan Lyons. Totally captivating and even though I was tempted to speed up the audio at times because the waiting was such excruciating agony, I restrained myself and enjoyed all 15+ hours of storytelling wonder at 1.25 speed.
Great googly moogly…..THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!!! As much as I loved the first one, I think I may have loved this one slightly more. I could hardly stop reading I was so in love. The first two books in The Codebreakers series was just what I needed to start this year off.
Roseanna White is a crazy talented author. She is able to capture so much emotion, action, and realness in her books. Her characters are all lovable, real, and just so amazing. The way that she can capture a readers attention just from the first page is a gift. Her research is impeccable and I honestly love reading her stories because it’s like reading a history textbook that fun!
Everything about this book had me hocked. The characters, the plot, and mystery, the humor, and the banter. I had a very difficult job putting this book down last night.
Ara was such a lovable, relatable female character that you can’t help but love. Her generosity and love for others even when they had wronged her was so pure and beautiful. Her banter and her personality was just as beautiful as her heart. One thing that I love so much about this series is the way that these ladies are praying for their men even before they knew them. Both Margot and Ara both prayed for their men without even realizing it. And I LOVE that!
Philip was such a sweetheart once we got past his broodiness. He was so compatible for Ara. I loved watching him grow and mature as the story went on. Ms. White did a phenomenal job at showing his development and the little changes that he experienced throughout this book.
Ughhh, y’all if you haven’t picked up ‘The Number of Love’ you NEED to read it and this book. These books are beautiful works for literature that will keep you hocked and you will fall in love with both the story and the characters because Ms. White writes everything so beautifully. So do yourself a favor and pick up her books, even if it’s not this series!
If y’all couldn’t tell from this review, I rate this book 5/5 stars. I would give it a million if I could! 😉
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review.*
My Review of On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White Everytime I hear that another Roseanna M White book is coming out I dream about reading. You see, her books are so marvelous, they tug you into the story and leave impression every time, no matter if it is a lesson in the plot, a character, or anything else, White has a way of showing you a world somewhat lost in history. On Wings of Devotion is no exception, as a matter of fact it is her best yet, though I say that every book of hers I read. Phillip, or rather to most Black Heart, is something of a broken glutton for punishment waiting for death to come until he meets Arabelle and then the story steps into another dimension of a wonderful plot. Every aspect of this second book in the Codebreakers series is thoroughly researched, emotionally reaching, and romantically shown. Recommendation: 16/19 up. Verse: Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (King James Version) Rating: 5 stars, would give more if possible. Disclaimer: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I loved this book! The characters, as usual for Roseanna White, are one-of-a-kind, robust, passionate people with flaws and strengths that make them utterly human. In this novel, the hero and heroine seem like polar opposites at first but they end up being the perfect match. Arabelle Denler has a strong moral compass and faith but isn't pretentious or judgmental. Phillip Camden, nicknamed Black Heart, is angry and riddled with guilt but tender toward those he wants to protect. The scene where he has his come-to-Jesus moment is one of the most powerful scenes I've ever read of this kind. I don't think I'll ever forget it. White has drawn deep spiritual transformation and biblical truths without being preachy or off-putting.
On Wings of Devotion has plenty of plot but it's the characters who drive the story. Fans of inspirational historical romance should not miss it, or any of the books in this series.
*Warnings* #1 This is a long review, so pull up a chair and grab a bowl of popcorn. You'll be here awhile. #2 When I read a review, I want substantial information. So I will not skimp on the details. Which will mean some spoilers, so watch out.
Wow. I am not in the right condition to be writing a review right now--especially this one. I got little sleep last night, consumed by this book. I'll try to make sense, be legible, convey what I want conveyed...but I doubt I can. I'm still in my "Camden" funk. Firstly, I just want to say that if that gorgeous cover doesn't hook you, then this should... Against Every Warning, She's Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as "Black Heart" All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster—a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing—and some of her own to do as well. With Camden's court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope—and to each other—if they want to survive.
And if that doesn't make you want to pick up this beautiful book, then what about this quote that just tugs at my heartstrings?
"He'd already bled out. Everything red and pulsing and alive long since gone. He hadn't a heart anymore, just a slab of rock. Black and hard and lifeless."
That's Phillip Camden--or Cam. And this...this is Arabelle.
"You are everything.Everything. Everything good, everything bright. Everything worthwhile."
"He opened his eyes so he could look into hers. Golden. Specks of green, specks of brown. All light. He craved it. Wanted to pull her closer until that light had a hope of reaching him, edging out the black."
This is NOT a "Christian Historical Romance." This is a soul-deep spiritual love story that reaches into the depths of one's heart and extracts every long-buried feeling and brings it to the light of Christ. This is the romance of a man and his Creator, his Friend, his Savior, his Lover. And how one woman laid down all her dreams to show that man the light. This story touched me...whew, did it touch me! One thing's for sure, I'll never be the same after reading On Wings of Devotion.
Roseanna M. White is one of my favorite authors--has been for years. Maybe I'm biased. But after reading The Number of Love earlier this year, I was kind of like...eh. Maybe she's lost her touch, right? Nope. I think she got better, because this book far surpasses anything she's ever written.
I could nitpick. Lord knows I want to--I like to criticize. But I can't. The only thing I didn't like is that this book ended. And the villain of the story, of course. I didn't like that particular person, but that's expected, yes?
Firstly, I'll give a quick compare/contrast between The Number of Love and this beautiful story. The former precedes On Wings of Devotion, connected by entwining timelines, characters, events, etc. That's when we met Camden, the best part of both books. I liked The Number of Love. But that's just it. I didn't love it. The suspense/action/mystery was good. So was the historic detail. The characters, the romance, and the spiritual fell short for me. Drake and Margot had more a friendship than anything else--there was no spark. And both characters make better secondary than primary. Drake was flat--Margot's faith in God made me screw my mouth up in a frown. The only reason I kept going was because I couldn't put it down--I was hoping it would get better. I was falling in love with Camden. And I needed to know how it ended, of course. Not so with On Wings of Devotion. I could've put it down--I did for a minute, too. But I picked it back up, because this story wrapped around me, these characters stole my heart, and my mind wouldn't stop pounding with the words I'd read for me to sleep. I don't think I could survive without this story.
At first glance, it's another White novel. Strong heroine, charming hero. Intriguing plot. Villainous villains and misled antagonists. History. Suspense. A distinct voice that makes you want to smile. But deep down, there's so much more. More than any of her stories had ever had. A deeper spirituality--not like A Soft Breath of Wind, where the portrayal of the Holy Spirit and God's power gave me chills. But like a gentle breeze, a soft song. A love like a river--not a fountain, a geyser, or an ocean. A river--gentle, endless, pulling you with a current into something more, something greater, something better.
I had some reservations at first. The first few pages were eh. I was worried that I wouldn't like the characters. That there wouldn't be much of a plot. You see, Camden has been around for years. White has given him so many different stories--none of which were published, of course, but as an author myself I know how characters and their stories are. Sometimes they're stuck in them, and moving them is like moving an African to China--so obvious that they don't belong, that they came from something different and were meant for something else. I loved him in the brief moments he was in The Number of Love, but some characters are better secondary than primary. They're a good friend, but getting into their head...not so much. Arabelle really had me worried. I was afraid she'd be bland. She wasn't. She's different than any of White's other heroines--still the same, strong and stubborn and determined and witty and clever. But there's something more. I think it's the light in her hazel eyes.
Anyway...we've established the characters were simply too lovable. They beat Margot and Drake. They made me want to laugh and cry--oddly, I never wanted to hit them over the head. Hmm. Good thing? The plot was great. It was eyebrow-raising at first, but as I got to know the characters more, I realized that this was actually character-driven rather than action-packed. They steered me in all sorts of different directions, took me on a journey I'll never forget. I'm super excited for A Portrait of Loyalty. The hero and heroine of that story are met in here--and I'm pretty sure I'm in love with them too. I'm once again astounded--because I always am when it comes to stories I was afraid of for some reason or another. This is up there on my favorites list--Camden's fault? And if Roseanna doesn't write more stories with this same...feeling...then I might cry myself to sleep for a month straight and bestow my affections upon another author. (Probably not. I'll just reread this one.)
Long story short, I love this book. I wouldn't change a thing about it. It's beautiful. Everyone should read it--if they don't, then they'll live the rest of their existence only half a person. Oh, and Chapter 14 was hands-down my favorite. Bookmark that one, readers. I could keep on going. I think I could write about how much I love this book until, well, until the world stops turning. There's so much more I want to say...but I won't. Read it for yourself. Please. Even Camden is saying please over here, which is so unlike him.
You want this review summed up in one word? Wow.

Oh, I enjoyed this. This character driven story flowed at a slow, steady pace and then picked up speed towards the end. The author always does a great job with her historical research and I enjoyed the aviation part of the facts as well.
I LOVED that the character from the Ladies of the Manor series was friends of Ava and Cam. I loved that series and so glad to visit with them, even for very short glimpses.
Ava and Cam is probably one of my favourite characters and couples that was penned to date by this author. I loved how their relationship started as friendship and how this friendship added to them being totally honest and vulnerable with each other.
This story was such a true reflection of "Don't judge the book by the cover", because there was so much more to both Ava and Cam than what society stamped on them and that, for me, was the true beauty of this story. Cam's brother's statement that Cam can either be a villain or a hero was so spot on and I kept turning the pages to finally find out the truth about the Incident.
Ava was such a Nightingale and her actions was such a true reflection of her close relationship with God. I loved her eccentric, adventurous father.
Other supporting characters, like Cam's mother, also made this story for me. And the true villain was surprising and unexpected.
I would highly recommend this to fans of historical romance.
I'm so excited to have discovered a new author whose books I love! Roseanna M. White! She writes historical fiction which is one of my favorite genres. This particular series is set during WWII and it really is amazing. The whole story just came alive in my head. I could picture the characters, the places and all the things going on. On Wings of Devotion is the second book in the series. I was lucky enough to pick up book one (The Number of Love) on a deal from Amazon (It's still on sale for just $.79 so grab it NOW! If you don't follow me on Facebook, you should! That's where I post about all the freebies and deals I find!) and I read it right before reading this book. It was awesome to jump right from one book to another and never leave that world of characters.
We first meet Phillip Camden in book one. He is aggressive and angry with the weight of the world on his shoulders. I'm so glad this second book was all about him and the golden hearted Arabelle. I loved how the story grew steadily and how my emotions were invested. By the end I felt almost desperate, reading much faster than I should have been!
This whole Codebreakers idea is fascinating to me. What an important part of history that I had no idea about before now. The author does a great job of outlining fact and fiction in her afterwords so I recommend reading those.
If you love historical fiction, I would really recommend this series. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book!!
Content: some violence, peril, kissing. Christian fiction.

Roseanna White's expert pen transports her readers to WWI England, her stellar research immersing us into a fictional world that is filled with espionage, danger and romance. In my humble opinion, Ms. White pens some of the most touching moments that will tug at your heart. And some of the most romantic moments that will have her readers swooning. The thread of God's love and grace is not forced but woven seamlessly throughout the story.
Her characters are endearing and are some of my favorite to follow. While all of her books can be read as standalone, there are characters from previous books that make cameo appearances.
She has created two of the most memorable characters to date in On Wings of Devotion. I absolutely adored Major Philip Camden. His strengths far outweigh his flaws, his loyalty and devotion to friends and family is incomparable. The heroine, Arabelle, is full of grit and compassion for others. Yet it is the vulnerability of Ms. White's characters that drew me into their stories. While the plot was engaging, and pacing was impeccable, it was the journey of faith and love that had me transfixed.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
What can I say? It's Roseanna M. White, so of course it's good.
Now did I have qualms with it? Yes. It wasn't her best work, in my opinion, but it was good.
LIKES: 1) Philipppppp. Rip my heart out, why don't you? He's a bit iffy on the physical contact front (*cough* stopkissingplease *cough*) but otherwise I love him. He has so many layers to him and is such a kind soul at his core. I just really loved how White developed him. 2) All! The! Character! Cameos! Nothing makes me happier than seeing all my fav characters from her past books making an appearance. Everything was tied together so well. :) 3) Arabelle's father is an endearing explorer whom I would 1000% tag along with on an expedition to find Atlantis. 4) "Woof" (no explanation here; the real ones KNOW) 5) The writing styleeee. Lord help me, this woman knows how to write. 6) There's so much research that goes into all of White's books, and it shows. By far one of my favorite historical fiction writers for this very reason. 7) Philip's family ahaha. I love his relationship with his vicar brother (fact: I would marry Jeremy) and his protective older bro side he shows his sister. The Camden family is just chaos in the best possible way and I'm here for it. 8) Philip and Arabelle are pretty cute, though personally, I didn't love Arabelle. Stilllll. The scene when he bought her a puppy?? I melted.
DISLIKES: 1) Ok, so there's nothing wrong with Arabelle but that's kind of the point. She's too "perfect." In other words . . . she's pretty boring. I never connected that strongly to her, though she had lots of good qualities. She just felt like a generic "good girl" character. 2) Hmmmmm not wild about the whole conversion trope and it's Definitely Here. It didn't bother me in A Name Unknown (though I understand if it bothers other people!) but I wasn't a fan of it this time around. 3) The plot was all right? Like, it was good . . . but not super engaging. There weren't any real plot twists, and it lacked the intrigue of White's previous novels. I wasn't bored, exactly, but I just didn't feel sucked in like I normally do. 4) There was a bit too much kissing for my taste (behave, Philip). Thankfully, their romance was a slowburn, and they started off as friends, but I could have done with less kissing.
Still not in the mental state to review books like I used to, but rest assured, I have many thoughts on this book and it was a lovely one. <3
"You'll either be a villain or a hero, Phil. Try to pick the right one, will you?"
On Wings of Devotion is an incredible story of compassion and redemption! White has significantly raised the bar in Christian fiction with this one. Even with a tad slow start, it didn’t take long for Phillip and Arabelle to take purchase in my heart. Both so different and yet so in need of the other; their love story is one that I will long remember.
This book has a strong Christian theme expertly woven throughout. Phillip’s agony over “The Incident” is palpable and blots out any color in his life…until Arabelle.
Arabelle Denler has an incredibly strong faith in the Lord and her compassionate nature is prominent as a nurse. She’s seen the atrocities and toll war takes on soldier’s so it’s only natural she recognize the deep hurt in “Black Heart” Phillip Camden.
I’ve always known White has a special gift when it comes to writing conversion scenes but the way she built up the emotional tension and turmoil leading to Camden’s conversion is exceptional. And may have caused a tear or two.
I was delighted to see Barclay Pearce and “the girls” (from White’s Shadows Over England series) make brief appearances. It definitely deepened my pleasure in the story. I hope they show up in the next book too.
Roseanna White fans are going to love this newest offering! It’s brimming with danger, intrigue, and romance. If you haven’t read her books, I highly recommend them.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own. No compensation has been received.
This book swept me away and I loved every minute of it! I knew in the last book when we met Phillip Camden that I would love him. I like particularly difficult characters, (having written one myself) and I love when you feel like fighting for someone who is presented as the anti-hero.
Ara was one of Roseanna’s characters that I felt like I could relate to the most. She has so many personality similarities to myself that I couldn’t help but fall in love with her and cheer her on from the very first moment. I can’t even quantify the many ways that we are similar. That always makes a book more enjoyable.
The historical storylines also made my heart pitter-patter. Honestly, I don’t know what to expound upon first because these books are my favorite and this author is the perfect mix of history, detail and amazing characters for me. I absolutely love her books!
She adds so much depth of character and really dives deep to unlock details about each person, their motives and personalities. Her stories are delightfully character driven and the history only suits to accent that beautifully instead of weighing down the story with too many details.
I always love reading the author’s note at the end and discovering what the real history behind her fictional characters and circumstances was. It is always fascinating to discover how close to the truth the story really is.
If you love historical fiction with subtle romance, delightful, deep characters and fascinating history, then you will adore this book! This is at the very top of the list for me when it comes to fiction. I would highly recommend it!
Not quite sure what I think of this one yet, so I'm reserving my review and rating for a second reading. Hopefully I'll be more capable then of sorting through my thoughts on this story.
The warm tones of the cover are lovely, and I must say that the cover captured my attention from the moment I saw it.
Content: one expletive, sensuality, pre-marital pregnancy, replacement expletives, tobacco, alcohol
Epic! I know I must say this about Roseanna’s every release, but this is her best book yet. The heroine being tall and gangly and an heiress ... contrasts with the hero being a rogue blamed for a crime he didn't commit ... or did he? The banter is unbeatable, the plotline unguessable, and this book un-put-downable!
On Wings of Devotion is the second book in The Codebreakers series. I loved it. In fact, this may be my favorite book I have read by the author. This book has wonderful characters, history, and romance. I couldn't put it down.
