“Suddenly all those old country love songs I’d played so often made perfect sense.”
Gravel-voiced Gibson Bodine takes his lone wolf image seriously. The tough guy. The bad boy. He lives alone. Works alone. His one love—besides starting a good brawl—is sitting on a rinky-dink stage in a backwoods bar playing guitar and singing about things he’ll never have.
When a video of him playing goes viral, Gibson ignores the unwanted attention. He’s got bigger things to worry about. Like the bomb his half-brother’s mom just dropped on him. And the fallout from the memento he’s been carrying around for thirteen years.
He doesn’t have time for fame… or love… or meddling neighbors stopping by with casseroles and questions.
But one night in a bar, fifty miles from home, he meets her. And she changes everything.
In Bootleg Springs—home of the best moonshine and nosiest neighbors in West Virginia—secrets don’t keep. When the truth about Callie Kendall’s fate brings danger home, it’s up to Gibson to step up and be the hero. And maybe find what he’s been missing all along.
Claire Kingsley is a #1 Amazon bestselling author of sexy, heartfelt contemporary romance, romantic comedies, and small-town romantic suspense. She writes sassy, quirky heroines, swoony heroes who love their women hard, romantic happily ever afters, and all the big feels.
Highball Rush is book six in the Bootleg Springs series by Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score. At long last, it’s the final book. The book with all the answers and the book with Gibson Bodine’s story.
I never thought about it before but it is fitting that Gibson’s book was saved for last. Gibson was the oldest of the Bodine siblings. He is thirty three years old. He’s the one that got the worst of growing up in a dysfunctional household. Now he is somewhat of a loner, living outside of town in a remote area. He’s a woodworker by trade, a cabinet maker. But he’s also a musician, a guitar player and an occasional song writer. It’s the one place he allows himself to express himself, where he pours out all his emotion. Otherwise, he’s the broody, grumpy brother, watching his siblings pair off one by one but never having any hope for himself. Until the night everything changed.
I have to say that I’ve had theories throughout this series, thoughts and ideas that popped into my head regarding the Callie Kendall mystery. Was I right? Sort of. Was I shocked? Oh my gosh, yes! There are so many surprises!
What I have to focus on, though, is this town. Not only the love between the Bodine siblings and the people they’ve fallen in love with throughout this series, but the town residents as well. The way they all band together to protect each other. To deliver their own brand of Bootleg Justice. It is said that what Bootleggers do best is eat. When things get rough, they cook and they eat. And they drink moonshine.
“These people were spilling love all over the place.”
I loved Gibson. Yes, he was all broody. But this man had a heart the size of Texas. And when he loved, he loved big. Let me tell you, that Gibson Bodine has a dirty side as well! And most of all, several times throughout the book he uses my very favorite endearment for the woman he loves. What is it? I’m not saying. If you know me, then you know what I’m talking about. I wonder if Claire Kingsley knew this when she wrote it? All he had to do was call her that, and I melt right into a puddle. Every time.
This series is best if read in order. Each book is about a different sibling. But there is an ongoing story line throughout, the mystery of the disappearance of Callie Kendall thirteen years prior. And in this final book, you will get all of the answers along with an amazing epilogue sure to make you swoon. So, buckle up, you’re going to need to for this one. But also get ready to smile, a lot, as you go back to Bootleg Springs one more time.
Well, my fabulous reader friends, here we are, at the end of the Bootleg Springs series. Six books. Six couples. One quirky town.
I love this series and its characters so much. It's been one of the highlights of my career to work with the amazing Lucy Score. And now that we're wrapping it up, I basically have all the feelings.
Keep reading for a (HOT) sneak peek at Gibson Bodine's book, Highball Rush. (Don't worry, there are definitely no spoilers.)
PREVIEW OF HIGHBALL RUSH: BOOTLEG SPRINGS BOOK 6
She was all woman. A woman who was currently driving me crazy on the dance floor.
I leaned in to speak low into her ear. “You’re doing somethin’ to me. You know that?”
“Maybe you should be doing something to me.”
“Honey, you have no idea how much I want to.”
“Then what are you waiting for?” She nipped my earlobe with her teeth. “Take me home.”
She didn’t have to tell me twice. I grabbed her hand and led her straight for the door.
We tumbled out into the quiet night, the air warm and still. She giggled, hanging on my arm as I led her to my truck.
“I didn’t finish my moonshine,” she said.
I knew she was teasing, but I spun her around and pushed her up against the side of my truck. Took her mouth in a kiss. This wasn’t soft or sweet. It was me—rough and untamed. Hard and demanding. I growled into her mouth, pinning her against my truck, and made her melt for me. Pressed my hard-on against her. I didn’t stop until I was sure she knew I was fucking her tonight. When I finally pulled back, her eyes were glassy and dazed.
“I’ll buy you another one. Now get in the truck.”
For the first time since building it, I regretted my house’s location. It wasn’t far from town, but my consciousness was filled with a haze of lust as I drove. More than lust. I wanted her, but not just for a quick fuck. I wasn’t bringing her home to scratch an itch.
I wanted to love every inch of her.
Finally, we pulled down my long gravel driveway. I got out and she didn’t wait for me to open her door. We rushed inside and as soon as I’d slammed the front door behind us, clothes started falling to the floor. She kicked off her sandals and slipped out of her dress. I tore my shirt off and paused with my jeans halfway down my legs, getting my first real look at her.
She stood in front of me in nothing but a light pink bra and panties. Reaching behind, she unclasped her bra and slowly let it drop to the floor.
The sight of those full tits and hard pink nipples short-circuited my brain.
She bit her bottom lip and curled her finger at me. “Get those pants off and come here.”
“Yes, ma’am,” I said, stepping out of my jeans.
She backed up toward my bedroom, a wicked gleam in her eyes. I followed, like a man in a trance, devouring the sight of her. The air between us snapped with electricity, anticipation making my heart thump in my chest.
Stopping next to the bed, she beckoned to me again. I licked my lips and grabbed my cock through my underwear, giving it a short tug as I approached her.
“Ooh,” she cooed, her eyes on my cock. “Big, dirty boy.”
I'm still reeling a bit that the series is over. All the loose ends have been tied and all the Bodines (and lots of other people) got their HEAs. But I'll miss them, for sure.
Gruff Gibson met his match and found out he had a heart there all along. It was just buried under too much past.
The townsfolk showed once again that they protect their own- whether through Bootleg Justice, or love.
Stray animals and stray people found their place.
And the mystery of Callie has been laid to rest.
So many swoon worthy moments throughout this series, but this book had more than its share. It also had laugh out loud moments. Moments that left you a sobbing ball of snot. And ones that just filled the cracks in your heart.
Lucy and Claire have created a piece of heaven in Bootleg Springs and although their words are now complete, I think the town will live on in our memories, and in the many rereads I am certain their fans will do for years to come.
"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."- Winnie the Pooh
"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." - Dr. Seuss
"I'll give you what you need, darlin'." --Gibson Bodine
I'm not easily persuaded when it comes to my sexy, grumpy heroes. I always want the woman to be worthy of their bleeding hearts, and Gibson Bodine is no exception. He may be the posterboy for brooding heroes, and would rather everyone just let him be, but he's also talented, humble, and very protective of his family and friends. All amazing qualities that would serve you well in a town like Bootleg Springs.
"Gibson Bodine. He was such an enigma...he was hard to crack. He was hiding a lot of pain behind that angry facade..."
I'm such a softie because it made my heart expand and my eyes tear up to see Gibson do something for himself for once: to finally let go of the past so he could move forward to a better future.
I absolutely loved every minute of this story, and these authors chose the perfect heroine for our Gibson. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this last book in the Bootleg Springs series was definitely well worth the wait. All my suspicions have been confirmed, and it's nice to know I've still got the "Columbo" genes/skills.🤔😂😂
I'm a little sad that we're at the end. I knew it was going to bittersweet for me, but it has been one heck of an amazingly beautiful ride! And the mystery that has plagued readers from the very first book about the missing girl was wrapped up perfectly. These books are interconnected stand-a-lones, so I would definitely recommend reading the previous books in the entire Bootleg Springs series before finishing things off with Gibson's and ____ story! Aht! Aht! Bet you thought I would reveal the heroine's name, didn't you?!😂😂 Nope! You're just going to have to read the book for yourselves! You won't regret it, I promise!🤓😊Hats off to the dynamic duo of Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score for a series well done. I'm going to miss those crazy Bodines!💜💖💜💖💜💖
****I received an ARC, and this is an honest review.****
**P.S. Loved, loved, loved the Bonus Epilogue!!😭😭** 💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💖
Just in case you need to know a little something about Gibson Bodine...
And if you want to know a little something about the leading lady...
I've never been more satisfied with a series ending book than I am right now. I just can't even begin to tell you how many feels I experienced while reading this book.
Gibson Bodine is the grumpy Bodine. But I swear he's a lovable grumpy. You just want to pull him into a hug and never let go. But you won't do that because it's Gibs and he's not a fan of hugs. Or people. Or anything, really.
So much happens in this book. So much and I refuse to say anything because it's just not right. If I spoil it, someone (probably Bootleg) would come after me with their own brand of Bootleg Justice and I just can't have that.
Now, I will say, this is book six and this book will answer ALL your questions. So, if you haven't read 1-5 and didn't know there were questions that needed answering, well, I think you should start with the first book. You'll knock them out in no time because they are so freaking addicting.
If you don't want to live in Bootleg Springs by the time you're finished with this series, I don't think we can be friends.
But seriously, AMAZING BOOK.
"I won't hurt you, honey. I just wanna get a little dirty with you."
After the first time I heard Stephen Dexter as Gibson, I knew the audiobook for Highball Rush would be my favourite to listen to in this series. Holy moly, that gravelly twang gave me shivers up my spine. Natalie Duke did an amazing job too, but this one was all about Stephen's - Gibson.
I really enjoyed my revisit to Bootleg Springs and will definitely be re-listening/visiting again in the future. If you're a fan of audiobooks, I highly recommend giving this series a try.
**********
I'm sad that it's over...
If you haven't tried the Bootleg Springs series yet, I highly recommend giving it a try now that it's reached the end. I have seen each of the Bodine's...and a few extras, fall in love, and enjoyed watching their journey to happiness. Each instalment showed another dimension to the craziness of this small town and I loved the feeling of anticipation, wondering what they will get up to next.
Both authors, Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score brought the town and its people to life for me. I was excited on the release day and read each instalment as quickly as possible. These were sexy stories but the storylines were never just about the bedroom shenanigans. Each couple is on a journey to happiness and it's obvious when they've found their perfect person. The mystery kept me captivated and wanting more. Sure, for about 2.5 seconds (somewhere in books #3 and #4) I thought it was being dragged out too far, but then another secret was revealed and I was sucked back in.
Highball Rush brings the series to a close and it was an excellent conclusion. Bootleg Spring and its inhabitants again showed what a community should be all about. Their loyalty to each other was admirable and it made me envious of their closeness. I loved the way they banded together and dealt with obstacles in their own special way. Socialising was a big part of this town. The baseball games were hilarious, the moonshine sounded appealing and the local businesses were ones I wanted to visit. I really want to be a part of Bootleg Springs.
Have I been vague enough???
Sorry, my lovely friends, but that's all you're getting from me. If I was to even give a smidgen of detail, I might accidentally give it all away.
Highball Rush is the fantastic finale of a phenomenal series! A match made in romance readers heaven, two literary geniuses - Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score - getting together and gifting us with this amazingly funny, suspenseful, steamy rom-com series with all the feels!
Highball Rush is book 6 in the Bootleg Spring series, and while each book is a story of a couple with their own HEA, there is an underlying mystery woven through the entire series and doesn’t get resolved until book six. You will want to start with book one, and I promise you - you will not be disappointed!
I’ve anxiously awaited each new installment in the series and tremendously enjoyed all six books. Bootleg Springs is a quirky little town where everyone knows everybody’s business, but also where everyone will stand up for each other and help their own. I loved meeting all the characters over the past year and feel as if they’ve become close friends. I’d love nothing more than to vacation in Bootleg Springs, visiting and having fun at the bonfire by the lake with the Bodines.
In Highball Rush we witness the last Bodine brother find his forever love; and the interwoven mystery unravels in a dramatic culmination of events as danger lurks around.
Claire Kingsley has masterfully brought the series home with captivating story line, relatable and remarkably well developed characters and just the right amount of swoon, steam and laugh out loud fun!
Y'all. Seriously, this book is E V E R Y T H I N G.
Highball Rush is book six in the Bootleg Springs series and gives us the story of the oldest Bodine sibling, Gibson. We also get the whole highly-anticipated story that we've been following throughout the series--what actually happened to Callie Kendall, the girl that mysteriously went missing from this small town thirteen years ago.
Gibson Bodine was absolutely everything I wanted him to be and MORE. If you've read the rest of the series (and you HAVE to read this series in order,) you've probably had your suspicions/hopes/worries about who his heroine would be. He and his lady love were just perfection together and no matter who you hoped he would end up with, you WILL be rooting for this couple to find their HEA.
I don't want to give anything away, as this whole book is basically one big spoiler so I will just say it was the perfect ending to a brilliant series. Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score prove that not only are they amazing authors independently, but when they team up, magic ensues. Bootleg Springs will forever be one of my favorite fictional places. Y'all, if you haven't read this series yet, grab ya some moonshine, settle in for a spell and enjoy. I highly recommend this whole series!
And now, I'll just leave you with a quote: "For us--for all of us--Bootleg Springs was our happily ever after."
Wow, just wow! Claire and Lucy have really outdone themselves with this series of books. They created a world that you just want to go visit and live there. The characters feel soo real and well created that I am sad that I will not hear from them again...(unless they write more to this wonderful town)!!!
This final installation of the series clears up all the questions you have throughout the series. I will not give away any of the answers as you should really read them.
Gibson FINALLY has his happy ever after (I'll call Her Mona Lisa #6). "swoon"
Gibson meets Mona Lisa #6 after a set he plays in a neighboring town. He is drawn to her. But as we learn in Bootleg Spring, danger lurks around ever corner. Mona Lisa #6 finds herself in danger and Gibson does everything he can to keep her safe.
Gibson and Mona Lisa #6's love grows as the danger continues. The strength of these characters is soo awesome to read. The way the family and town keep them safe and how they finally bring down the bad guy.
I just love this town and how they really have each other's backs! Thank you Claire and Lucy for writing a great family/town/series!
The sweet evening around the campfire after a full day of whitewafter rafting
Lucy Score and Claire Kingsley have broken new ground with this version of a co-write, and I for one am a huge fan. Throughout the books, the quality was top notch, and I could not discern any major differences, each book was a standout on its own, and as a series, it was amazing. Waiting to find out the resolution to ALL the secrets harboured in this small town, surrounding its disappearance case, the people, the past and the future was small torture, even for me who has only recently picked up these books and devoured them.
Highball Rush was the perfect way to finish out the series. It was such a joy to see Gibson Bodine figure out his relationships, with his family, his past and his future. The story goes into all the open ends that we wanted to find out, and nothing is left unsolved. On the other end, it is a true love story in its own right, rather than just fulfilling a checklist of things left unanswered. Gibson and his heroine have quite the path to walk to get to the end, but it is beautiful, filled with emotion, with fun, banter and of course some heat, but most importantly all the good and fuzzy feelings. And seeing the whole town, all the secondary and third characters appear and contribute to closing out one amazing series in an exciting, wholesome, fun, breathtaking way.
This journey took some more big twists and turns, but the proverbial day of whitewater rafting and taking jumps into the lake full of rocks ended up with a smooth glass of moonshine, sitting around the campfire, listening to country music, laughter and revelling in the company of good friends, family and community.
The Bootleg Series. When I first found this series, I was knee deep in my husbands deployment. He had just left and I was home trying to figure out life again, sans husband. Just me and my two kiddos trying to figure out how to manage when it was just us. Books became my escape from the monotonous everyday that is life while your other half is deployed.
Enter Whiskey Chaser. Holy freaking Hannah. I had read both Lucy and Claire prior to this book and then they came together and delivered THIS series. Each book had me on the edge of my seat, wanting to know more, NEEDING to know more.
Finally, Highball Rush came as an ARC on my device. I cried before I even opened it because I knew it was the last book in the series. These characters all became a part of my life, like new military friends who just moved into the neighborhood. I stared at the cover for quite a while because I knew when I finished it, it’s like my friends came up on orders to move and they would be leaving me.
And then I read it. In the span of a few hours. I laughed, I cried, I swooned. I got all the answers I had been waiting for. The book ended and I felt so happy for my friends who all got the happy ending they each deserved. I cried at the loss of not knowing what happens next because this book was the closing chapter to their stories.
Claire and Lucy have taken this town of Bootleg and turned it into a beautiful set of intertwining stories that leave you breathless and captivated. Thank you both for introducing us to Bootleg Springs, for bringing these characters to life in a way that is unmatched. For allowing us to be a part of that.
Reasons to read this book: 1. Claire Kingsley wrote it with Lucy Score 2. It’s Gibson 😍🔥 3. It’s the 6th and last book of the series 4. The mystery is solved 5. It’s Bootleg Springs 6. It’s a 5+ star read
Highball Rush was everything I expected it to be and so much more. I've been waiting for Gibson's story since the first installment. His story was begging to be told from the very beginning, and Claire didn't disappoint.
I've been a Bootleg Springs fan since the beginning. Waiting for these stories to come has been the most beautiful form of torture. Lucy and Claire have exceeded my expectations with each release, how a co-writing duo can be so in sync and spot on is simply amazing.
As for Highball Rush, you will get all of the answers you seek. No stone is left unturned. This book is more than just the answers to all of our questions. It is a beautiful love story between Gibson and his heroine. With the many trials and tribulations they must face it brings the townspeople of Bootleg to rally around them. You will get to see your favorite Bootleg townies one last time, along with all of our favorite characters from this series.
Seeing Gibson get his happily ever after was worth the sadness of realizing this series is over. My pepperoni roll loving, country girl heart will always have a special place reserved for Bootleg, and my favorite family The Bodines.
Holy smokes - Highball Rush...….how frickin' amazing was this story y'all?? Gibson's story was totally worth the wait and the best way to end the Bootleg Springs series! From his broodiness and growling, to seeing him soften up and fall in love with the girl that stole his heart (when he calls her love, swoon!) - Highball Rush is pure perfection from start to finish. I laughed and cried and smiled my way through this story that will steal a little piece of your heart.
Besides Gibson finding the girl of his dreams, the mystery and details surrounding the disappearance of Callie Kendall are finally revealed - and while some of it was quite a shock, the resolution to that storyline couldn't be anymore satisfying.
I'll be honest, when I first started this series, I wasn't totally sold on it. But a good friend encouraged me to keep reading, and as I did I couldn't help but fall in love with the stories and found myself caught up in the magic of Bootleg Springs...….and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite series. Just everything about it was amazing and I hate having to say goodbye.
Highball Rush - the final installment in the Bootleg Springs series - is EVERYTHING! Romance, mystery, suspense, danger, music, dancing, plot twists, family, friends, enemies, humor, sexy-time, Bootleg Justice, and a very happy ever after are all in this book.
It has been a couple of days since I finished Highball Rush. I usually want to post my reviews immediately after reading a book so that my thoughts are fresh as to what transpired. Not so with this book. I had so many thoughts and emotions after reading this one that I had to step away from it for a bit before sharing about it. I both snort-laughed and ugly-cried while reading this one (not at the same time) so have some tissues handy. Plus there are certain scenes that may leave you wanting some "alone" time.
Gibson Bodine, the eldest of the Bodine siblings, was the star of this book. He was the sibling most affected by his parent's tumultuous marriage - feeling (and having been told by his father) that his mother becoming pregnant with him ruined all of his father"s hopes and dreams and started his father down the path to become an alcoholic. He was the one who tried to shield his siblings away from the ugliness of his parent's marriage and, by doing so, ended up being quite the recluse because he did not want to end up like his parent's and, because of that, there has always been a piece of him missing.
The mystery thread that binds these books together has been the disappearance of Callie Kendall. She summered in Bootleg Springs as a teen and made friends with most of the young people who lived there. Her parents were well-to-do and her father was a judge with political ambitions. One summer evening, when Callie was 16 and Gibson was 20, she disappeared without a trace. Gibson feared that his father may have had something to do with the disappearance as shortly afterwards he left town for awhile. Gibson had always been both ashamed of his father and afraid that he would be like him if he was not steadfast in his resolve to always be there for his family, always be single, and always be sober.
Then one day Gibson, who is an extremely talented musician, was videoed on a stranger's phone while playing in a bar with his three-piece band in another town. The video of his incredible performance went viral, leading to a record executive to send one of his producers to locate and sign Gibson to the record label. Little does Gibson know how much that viral video will change his life forever.
Because of the overall mystery in this series, which comes to a satisfying conclusion in this book, I am reluctant to go into any other details. I will simply say the mystery is solved, the ladies' book club has Bootleg men exhausted, Misty Lynn gets a visit from Karma, and Gibson gets possibly the best happy ever after of all of his siblings.
Lucy Score and Claire Kingsley created a series of six books, so seamlessly woven together that if you didn't know which writer was creating each book, you would not be able to tell. I am convinced these two women share the same brain! I am hopeful that in the coming years we may get to revisit Bootleg Springs for the stories of the children of the Bodine siblings. If nothing else, the attorney, Jayme, definitely deserves a book of her own. I highly recommend reading Highball Rush and the complete Bootleg Springs series.
Thank you, Lucy and Claire, for sharing these stories with us and for just being completely awesome human beings!
Ya know, I thought I would be saddened reading the last of Bootleg Springs, and the Bodine family. However, Gibson's eye-opening finale brings together everything and everyone. Leaving me sated, smiling, and happy! If you were ever on the fence about the town of Bootleg Springs, I promise after reading this you will have formed a solid opinion on the townsfolk down to the animals that run freely. All those questions that have been building up.. answers will come, and then some! Gibson- oh, my that growly persona works for him! ( and explains so much too ) His road to happiness is a bumpy one, but when you've got the Bodine family backing you up... anything is possible. The woman in his sights is one lucky lady! He quickly moved up my list of favorite Bodine Brothers! A twisty tale, with emotions running on high, dangerous, and full of justice only Bootleg can provide. This steamy, dreamy, fists of fury, humor laden ending to a spectacular series is more than I had anticipated. One you MUST read for yourself to fully enjoy! 5 Moonshine Filled Stars!
From the very start, Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score created pure magic with the Bootleg Spring series and I have to say, they have outdone themselves in Highball Rush! I have been in awe of their writing since Whiskey Chaser and have loved EVERY minute of this series!
Highball Rush is the conclusion to this amazing series and the ladies definitely saved the best for last! Gibson Bodine is one hell of an uptight guy with good reason. However, throughout the book, you see him finally come into his own and work through the past. I loved Gibson so much and am happy to see him get the happy ending he deserves.
I enjoyed every moment of this journey with the Bodine family along with the town of Bootleg Springs! CK and LS wrote this series like nothing I’ve ever read before. You can see yourself in the town, walking down the street, talking with the Bodine’s and helping out with a little Bootleg Justice ;)
This was the perfect ending to a fantastic series. I highly recommend you make it your next binge read!
It felt like Christmas morning when I woke up today to find Gibson Bodine's story on my Kindle (I received it as an ARC). Gibson has intrigued me from the beginning and I have been waiting for his story - and the conclusion of the Callie Kendall case - since book 1. Let me tell you, this 1000% did not disappoint. It was everything I had hoped it would be. Thank you, Lucy and Claire, for giving us this wonderful series!
This is everything we hoped for in the final Bootleg Springs book. I'm not going to talk about the plot, y'all need to just read it! Just know it's funny, its sexy and I cried more than once-both happy and sad tears!
Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score created this amazing world and invited us to live there for six truly remarkable books. I am so sad to leave the Bodines and all of Bootleg Springs.
This is the last in the series and this one has had a mystery thread throughout. So definitely read these in order. Fortunately, this does a great job wrapping things up and gives us a very satisfying conclusion.
This will contain spoilers for the previous books. Be forewarned if you care!
I was thrilled at the end of the previous book to think that Gibson might have been involved with Callie when they were kids. It confirmed that the big lunk really does have a heart and I loved seeing that confirmed and reinforced in this story. I loved even more that there wasn't any skeevy business going on back then that I'd have to get past. And then thrilled with how she has turned out and the strength and determination at her core. And I love, love, love that they connect through a shared love of music and not least because Kingsley is really good at portraying the power of shared talent and artists connecting through their art.
Indeed, their romance is strong and is by far the best part of this story. Unfortunately, it's so strong that it pretty much culminates at the midway point. Fortunately, Kingsley is author enough not to extend it unnaturally or draw it out with manipulation or artifice. But it does mean that my biggest emotional investment had paid off long before the story was ended.
The rest of the story is wrapping things up so Callie can come out of hiding (and be with Gibson, natch). This also works (even if Kingsley has to invent magical moonshine to do it) and I was interested and all. But interested isn't the same as engaged and it took me some extra days to finish the story as I let interruptions and diversions drag me away. And I really liked the final reveal (however tired I was of Callie's "secret box of horrors" in her head) as it fit very well while still providing a sting of surprise.
So in all, this is a good story and a great romance. It's only four stars because the best bit was fully finished by halfway and I struggled a bit getting the last bit over. I kind of didn't care about wrapping that final mystery when all is said and I could already see their happily ever after clear enough in my head once they'd pledged mutual commitment.
A note about Steamy: There are a couple explicit sex scenes of some length so this is the middle of my steam tolerance. I frankly skimmed the last as I already knew what I needed from their intimacy and details were gratuitous by that point.
Do yourself a favor. Go read the first 5 installments of the Bootleg Springs series written by Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score. That way you’ll be sufficiently emotionally invested in the characters to truly appreciate Highball Rush, the final story in the set. This whole series is steeped in mystery, shenanigans, adventure, moonshine, and of course some hot loving by the good folks of Bootleg as they find their soulmates and solve a decade-long mystery.
The writing is seamless from Lucy to Claire; you’d be hard-pressed to detect a difference in dialogue, pacing, character, or story arc. And just like the first five books, Highball Rush features a hero and heroine who are robust, three-dimensional characters. Their tale is rich and extremely rewarding. You’ll find the ending bittersweet—charmed by yet another happy ending in Bootleg Springs, but sorry to say farewell to the Bodines and their friends and family. Buy the whole series. They’re books you’ll enjoy revisiting over and over again.
I don't even know where to start. I can't believe the Bootleg Springs series is over...I feel like my best friend moved away! This book was AMAZING - seriously - AMAZING. Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score created SUCH an awesome series - one that you DEFINITELY do not want to miss! If this is the first book you're seeing - go back to book 1 - they must be read in order!
This book takes us on sweeping highs and terrible lows, all while making the reader feel like they were part of the story and an honorary member of Bootleg Springs. Gibson Bodine is swoony and perfectly imperfect - the brooding hero who has kept to himself throughout each book. Unraveling his complicated story couldn't have been easy, and yet Claire did it effortlessly.
The dynamic duo of Claire and Lucy is a combination not to be missed. One can only hope this is the first of MANY collaborations...and I for one would knock small children out of my way to get to whatever either of these brilliant ladies writes next. Too much? What can I say - I'm a sucker for a book that makes the reader feel like they're living in the town and participating in the story. All of the Bootleg Springs books have been phenomenal and I am SCREAMING at everyone to BUY THIS BOOK! You will NOT be sorry!
From the very beginning of this series the reader falls head over heels in love with all of the characters in Bootleg Springs especially the Bodine family. Between reconnecting with past loves, finding new loves and making connections that last lifetimes every book in the series was better than the last. With that being said, once again I wish I could rate this with more than 5 stars. Every chapter had me wanting more, every character was beautifully written and the storyline was heart wrenching and heart warming all at the same time. Finally secrets are spoken and answers are revealed. I am so sorry to see this series end. Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score - thank you for creating this town and thank you for the emotional journey. This will be one series I will re-read time and time again.
Hold on to your hat! This has got to be the best series finale ever in the history of evers. What will you find in this episode of Bootleg Springs? Book club, bootleg justice, chocolate brownies, music, moonshine, sweet kisses, unusual pets, romance, suspense, belly laughs, fiery passion, pepperoni rolls, dancing, bonfires, softball, and love, love, love. Thank you Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score for the unforgettably wild ride.
Brava Ladies. I LOVED THIS SERIES WITH MY WHOLE HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this book so much but also, Thank you, because Bootleg Springs has imprinted big time on my heart!
In an effort to keep from spoiling anything, this is all you'll get out of me, but 100% this book, aside from whatever else was happening, was very well written and my heart is all the things!!!
Loved Gibson. All the supporting characters are back. Plus -----?? 4.5 stars this book/ 5 stars for the series. *Books 1 through 5 need to be read before this book*
This was my favorite book in the series and a good way to wrap up the series!
As enjoyable as this was, I will say there is so much in this series that is so extra and over the top and unrealistic - you kinda gotta be able to roll with it in order to enjoy these books
If you have been anxiously and not so patiently waiting for Gibson's story, you will NOT be disappointed! I love broody alpha heroes, and with his gravelly voice and grumpy demeanor, Gibson is one of the best I've ever read. Lucy and Claire have done such a seamless job of telling this family saga without any hiccups that might be expected when two authors share a series from opposite sides of the country. The town of Bootleg Springs is the main character of all the books, and they do it so beautifully. So no spoilers, but every loose end is perfectly wrapped up, every character is given just the right amount of attention, and of course, the Callie story comes to its dramatic conclusion. Gibson is a character who needs someone willing to see through his gruff persona to the hurt little boy with so much love to give. He needs a strong female who will understand him but still not take his crap. And boy does he get it! His lady is tough, and she is sweet, and she appreciates all of the relationships in his family and his crazy little town. They are the perfect complement to one another, and it's a hard and fast fall for the Bodine brother who prides himself on being the lone wolf. I really appreciated the family perspective from Gibson as the oldest sibling who takes such responsibility for the rest. I'm going to miss Bootleg Springs, and I'm positive I will reread the whole series just to catch up with these characters I love so much. Kudos to Lucy and Claire on a job well done. Thank you for the journey!
If I could give this book more than 5* then I would! I loved everything about it! Infact I loved the whole series! The build up in the first 5 books to what actually happened to Callie is so good, little snippets of information but nothing too much! The evidence that keeps building against Jonah Snr. Building the hype up for the finale, and let me tell you, you will not be disappointed!
Gibson is a grumpy person, his family know it, the whole town of Bootleg Springs knows it, he doesn’t ask for much except a quiet life and to be left alone!
Maya is a well travelled music producer, she helps bands stay on the right track and help them through the difficult times. When her boss asks her to go and check a new act out that has gone viral on the internet, she heads within 50km of Bootleg Springs!
When Gibson and Maya’s eyes meet across the bar there is instant attraction, but she leaves before he can get to her. The next day she turns up in Bootleg Springs, and on his doorstep! Can Maya break through the rough exterior to the real Gibson!
Callie’s story is starting to come to light, the evidence is building against Jonah Snr. and his family has been dragged into it. But, the truth is out there and all it takes is for a small town and one extended family to get the truth out there!
Finally the Bodines have all found happiness, including grumpy old Gibson!
This is a perfect end to an amazing series of books.

The grumpy broody eldest Bodine. The mysterious angry brother that left everyone wanting more before we even knew what more was. Gibson Bodine was just about everything you expected; a grumpy man of few words and even fewer emotions. But, in Highball Rush, we learned he is so much more than that. He’s loving, caring, protective, sexy, oh so freaking sexy, and behind that wall of anger is the biggest heart filled with more love that you could imagine. Gibson Bodine absolutely steals your heart without even trying. He finally meets the woman perfect for him in every way. He’s determined not to let his past or any other obstacles stop him from making her his. Highball Rush takes you on a wild ride of discovery, secrets revealed, and the final EPIC truth of what really happened to Callie Kendall. You think you know what’s going to happen but Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score took those expectations and theories and obliterated them in the best way possible. I received a copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
