5 - "Thorns and all..." Stars!

Another great addition to The MacGregor Lairds series. Will and Rose’s book pretty much runs concurrently with its predecessor - How to Blackmail a Highlander in that the bulk of their adventure plays out at the same time (albeit in different locations) to Alice and Roberts book. The latter stages do take us beyond that though.

She’d never wanted to simultaneously comfort and maim a man before…

The main theme of this series is that you get feisty women, ballsy MacGregor men, and a lot of love-to-hate-you banter, and this is definitely the case for Rose and Will, taken hostage by him because he initially assumes she is an enemy spy, it is pretty much a comedy of errors until the reach Scotland.

"I’ve no designs on your virtue…"

"…Why not?"

All the while behind the verbal sparring their feelings for each other are growing. But one belongs in Scotland, and the other lives in England so how could a relationship between them ever work…

"The place doesn’t matter… Only the person I’m with."

Another winner, I love this series, and I love this author’s work. Cannot wait for more!

** 3.5 Stars Rounded Up **

This was a fast-paced, action-filled read and I enjoyed it. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series and felt perfectly comfortable with this one. There was a bit of ‘repeat’ of things from previous books, but only to add to the context in this book. I don’t feel as if I missed anything by not having read the earlier books. One thing I have noticed from discussions of the series – the couples are all into bickering. This book takes place at the same time as book #3 – How To Blackmail A Highlander – and features the heroine’s lady’s maid and the cousin to the hero.

Rose Thatcher, lady’s maid to Lady Alice Chivers, loves her lady, England and her life in London. Her family is all there and she loves living in the Chivers household. Yet, she is standing on the dock in Dover watching a ship, with her lady on it, sail away. Her lady has a plan and now Rose has to carry out her part of it. She must return to the family’s lodgings and pretend that Lady Alice is in her room – indisposed. She has to do anything she can to prolong the discovery that Lady Alice is missing.

William MacGregor is also on the docks seeing off his cousin Philip. He has to be very careful not to let anyone see his face and recognize him because he has been deeply embedded in the camp of the MacGregor’s mortal enemy, Ramsey. He’s acting as a spy and feeding information back to the MacGregor’s. Ramsey also has spies everywhere and if one of them spotted him, his life would be forfeit and they would know that Philip had left the area.

As William is surveilling the dock area, he notices a woman – just standing – watching the ship on which Philip just sailed away. Can she be a spy for Ramsey? He can’t afford for anyone to report that Philip has left the area, so, the only option that William can see is to take the woman someplace where he can then question her. That gives Philip time to get further out to sea if she is a spy, and if she isn’t – well – no harm is done. Yes, we all know how that is going to end. In a set of blunders, one after the other, the woman ends up back at Ramsey’s camp with him. Now, he has to keep her protected from the lascivious hoodlums working for Ramsey.

As Ramsey gets word that Lady Alice has flown the coop, he announces that they’ll all be leaving the next day. William must now manage to glean information on Ramsey’s route, manpower and plans as well as keeping Rose protected. They have quite a journey – both on the trail to Scotland and to their HEA.

There were a couple of things that left me wondering. For instance, Will kept dispatching messengers – many of them. Where did he get messengers? He was in the middle of an enemy camp with no friends around anywhere. Also – why would they send for a ‘Reverend’ to perform a marriage ceremony when all of Scotland and England were Catholic at that time?

I think I had a love/hate relationship with the main characters. I loved that each could be protective and caring toward the other. But then… He had to have the lowest of low self-esteem. He blamed himself for everything that went wrong in the world whether he could have prevented or changed it or not. I really got tired of that. For Rose, the constant ‘I must be with my lady’ just drove me insane.

It is a nice read whether you’ve read the previous books or not.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Escape to the Highlands with How to Forgive a Highlander . Michelle McLean’s fourth MacGregor Lairds book is fast-paced, engaging, and easy to enjoy thanks to its charming protagonists.

Will is a hero on a mission. Not just to protect his clan from the villainous Fergus Ramsay, but to prove himself to his loved ones. Will’s eagerness to prove himself sometimes causes him to make mistakes (kidnapping Rose because he thinks she’s a spy, for example), but his heart’s in the right place so it’s easy to see why Rose forgives him. As for Rose, I defy you not to adore her like I did. She’s lady’s maid who is loyal, protective, resourceful, and brave. When her life is turned upside-down and she finds herself in a dangerous situation with only a virtual stranger she can trust, Rose doesn’t quail. She’s not invincible, but she is quick and strong and I was eager to see how she and Will would work together to save their loved ones.

A fair amount of How to Forgive a Highlander takes place on the road, which allows for Will and Rose’s romance to develop organically. I enjoyed watching them bicker then fall for one another. They are a couple who simply fit and though the romance was somewhat understated, it was still satisfying.

How to Forgive a Highlander is the fourth book in the MacGregor Lairds series, and if you don’t mind major spoilers from previous books then it can be read as a standalone. This story does wrap up the series nicely and I’m glad we got to see Will and Rose get their happily ever after. However, if you’ve read the previous book, How to Blackmail a Highlander, then you know the outcome of a good portion of the events in this book, which means the stakes aren’t as high. Still, I enjoyed Rose and Will’s story. It has a sweet romance, likeable characters, and Ms. McLean’s writing swept me away for an enjoyable ride.

This was a fast paced read full of adventure and action. The two main characters are Willian MacGregor and Rose Thatcher. William was cousin to the laird and currently working as a spy and Rose was the maid to Lady Alice. ( Alice featured in the previous book) it was good to read of those in the lower part of society. William was often over enthusiastic and as a result often made a mess of things. But he was brave and every protective. Rose was feisty and argued a lot and she was able to make the best of her situation. Somehow they connected in a way, firstly through a mutual attraction but then a deeper mor meaningful relationship. However, there are many obstacles in their way, including vengeful enemies and the not small detail that Rose wants to return to England and William wants to remain in Scotland. This story will keep you reading until the end, there is certain not a dull moment! I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Michelle McLean is a new-author to me, it is the blurb which attracted me first.
As I’m a self taught reader in English language, stories with Scottish brogue are not always my favorite as I struggle sometime at reading it (don’t talk to me to listen to an audio version, it would be sexy but like listening to Chinese!), but here I had no difficulties.
But first I loved it was about commoners, for once no laird nor lady but a simple highlander loyal to his kin and a maid ready to fight with teeth and claws for her charge.
Sure William seems to be wreaking havoc in his wake, having not read the three previous installments, I can only trust his words. But it is certain than despite his good intentions, he make a muddle of things. So I quite understand why he felt so defeated and so not deserving but he does not see he does good even in his mistakes, he was ready to die to save his laird’s wife, and her friend.
Rose is a her-head-screwed-straight kind of girl, she gives a thought before taking any action, she is not easily confused, only when around William, she looses her temper.
When close, each arises the worst and best in the other, they can’t stop to argue or bicker but also feel stronger when together and are drawn to another.
They tried to fight their attraction, because worst than their constant nagging at another, there is their origins, she longs for London when he only wants to go back to Scotland among his kind or serve them.

« “But you’re as human as the rest of us. No one is infallible, Will. And you’ve since saved my life—more than once.” »

It was a slow burn story as the author took time to give them moments to get to know the other, to learn about their past and their hopes. It was in spite of them they fell in love, but still they struggled because of who they were.
In all a lovely tale of two very opposite persons finding home in each other.
I just would have liked an epilogue, but it is just me.

2.5 stars - rounded up

The bulk of this story runs in parallel with Alice & Philip's story and centers on Alice's maid Rose and Philip's cousin William.

William is working as a spy for his laird, he has joined Ramsay’s men and keeps his family up to date on Ramsay’s plans, so when he sees Rose watching the ship his cousin Philip is sailing on and believes she is a spy and takes her captive. He realizes his mistake too late and must keep Rose with him to keep her safe, he tells Ramsay that Rose is his “woman”. Rose is not happy, but agrees to play along because she might be able to help Lady Alice.

This book has a lot of action and intrigue, it moves at a good pace, but for me, it felt like the romance was an afterthought – I didn’t feel the “love” and even at the end, it felt forced. Will is a great character but is very hard on himself and carries a lot of guilt. Rose is very opinionated and feisty, but I didn’t really understand why she felt she “had” to stay with Alice – it was almost like she didn’t have a choice and was not able to leave, even if she wanted to, which was just odd. This is the fourth book in the series and If you have been following the series, parts of this story may seem a bit repetitive, but this book definitely gives enough backstory to keep a new reader from feeling lost.

How to Forgive a Highlander by Michelle McLean is book 4 in The MacGregor Lairds. This is the story of Rose Thatcher and William MacGregor. I have read the previous books, but feel you could make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
William is trying to protect his lair and clan by being a spy. William ends up kidnapping Rose when he thinks she is spying on his clan. Rose is a lady's maid in England and she is trying to protect Lady Alice when she runs off. When William learns he made a mistake taking Rose he goes into protective mode and both know they need to work together now to protect others along with themselves.

I’d been waiting to find out what happened to Will, he was so desperate to prove himself, whether he does or not you’ll have to read to find out!
A well written engrossing read that held my attention all the way through. I thoroughly enjoyed the book but I was invested in the series & had eagerly awaited this book. The characters were well portrayed & I loved how the relationship between Will & Rose developed. There were a couple of things I did wonder about, for instance how did Will find trustworthy messengers on the journey north?

Heat Factor: Medium-low
Character Chemistry: That thing where they argue and it’s true love
Plot: Accidental kidnapping leads to much bloodshed, but probably the bloodshed was going to happen anyways
Overall: Decidedly uneven

So here’s the deal. We have your classic Ye Olde Hottie MacScottie (aka William MacGregor), who sees a quintessential British Rose (aka… Rose) and MUST kidnap her for Reasons. Since I have a well-documented love for Old School Julie Garwood Highlander Romances, I figured this would be a good fit for me.

There are definitely some expected things that this book does well. Specifically, if we’re reading in the Scottish Kidnapping subgenre of romance, we expect the heroine to get a bit saucy with the hero while also being uncomfortably attracted to his manliness, and I was not disappointed. McLean excels here, especially in Rose’s interior monologues, which are quite funny. For example:
"What sort of fool was she, mooning over how strong he must have been when he carried her unconscious body to his wagon so he could abduct her?"

Ha! But also: good question.

There are also some unexpected bits to the book, which made it different from a standard rehash of the Scottish Kidnapping trope, and which added some interest to the story, particularly in terms of the conflict between William and Rose as they start to fall in love and try to imagine their lives together. To wit: William is not a lord, and Rose is not a lady. Rather, William is a vassal, with no holdings of his own, and Rose is a lady’s maid. They therefore have obligations that neither can easily jettison, as well as logistical concerns about where they could possibly live and both feel accepted. Who cares if the washerwomen won’t gossip with the new lady of the house who happens to be English? No one. Who cares if they won’t gossip with the new maid, who also happens to be English? Well, that might be a bit more uncomfortable for the parties involved. (Also - what is the historical precedent for lady’s maids getting married and keeping their posts? This doesn’t come up, but I did wonder…)

Unfortunately, this potentially interesting source of conflict between William and Rose is hand-waved away without much discussion, which brings me to my main critique of How to Forgive a Highlander: that the book doesn’t pick an idea and stick to it. This goes for plot, tone, and the arc of William and Rose’s relationship.

As I mentioned above, when Rose is first kidnapped, the tone is quite feisty and fun. But then - suddenly - we turn to ANGST. So much angst. Some of this angst is William, who insists, sort of out of the blue, that he messes everything up, and that all the danger that is coming to their friends is because he kidnapped Rose, and every time he tries to do something right everything goes wrong, etc etc etc. First: this comes out of nowhere, as he starts out pretty confident in his abilities, and doesn’t do anything remarkably stupid on the page. Second: there is no evidence whatsoever that the fact that William kidnapped Rose led to the Evil Bad Guy finding the people William is protecting; in fact, all signs point to the Evil Bad Guy already knowing where everyone is. William’s heavy burden of guilt doesn’t seem earned, and makes the actual mechanics of the adventure story component of the plot unnecessarily confusing.

There is also angst about their relationship, which, ok, fine. But the correlated transitions in their relationship as the tone moved from feisty to angsty were not well-developed. The build from Enemies to Lovers is not bad, but then they are suddenly very deeply in love, but claim they can’t be together because they argue all the time - except they haven’t been arguing all that much since they started being lovers, because they’ve been too busy being angsty about their stolen moments of time together before their inevitable parting. (There’s also some Fake Relationship stuff going on, which just adds to the book feeling overstuffed and underdeveloped.)

A final note: this is the fourth book in a series, and it only sort of stands alone. There is a LOT of expository monologuing in the first quarter or so of the book, so that the reader is all caught up on all the different players and their histories and their nicknames and their fight against the Evil Bad Guy. Some of this is funny - William explains everything to Rose while she’s unconscious, and he’s carrying her to his wagon to complete his kidnapping - but overall, it’s tedious, especially since it happens more than once.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the first book i've read by Michelle Mclean and it certainly won't be the last.

How to forgive a highlander was a quick, fun read. Rose and William were adorable together. I always liked a bickering couple but this is so difficult to get right. McLean walks a fine line where the couple's charming bickering showcases the chemistry between the leads instead of them being annoying.

While Rose was a brave straightforward character, William was a hero who knows his flaws, admits to it and overcomes it with flying colors. Rose was a perfect match for William even though she lacked the diffidence her role was supposed to have.

I did take a whole to connect with the characters since I haven't read any of the previous books, but the story got me hooked pretty fast. I couldn't put the book down and enjoyed the dynamics between our lead characters.
I enjoyed reading this book so much I'm going to read the previous books in the series.

How to Forgive a Highlander
Michelle McLean

How to Forgive a Highlander by Michelle McLean is book four in her MacGregor Lairds series. Though this is part of a series, it is a standalone, as are all the books in the series.

Rose Thatcher, maid to Lady Alice Chivers, is mistakenly kidnapped by Scottish highlander, William MacGregor, who’s been spying on his clan’s sworn enemy. The two begin a contentious relationship, which makes perfect sense, since he did kidnap her. Soon their bickering becomes more than either will admit to wanting. How will this work when Rose wants to return to England and William can’t imagine leaving his beloved Scotland?

I only had one major issue with this story. William talks out loud to himself and to Rose, even when she is unconscious. Admittedly much of this dialogue is humorous and this may be a clever way to impart backstory and character details to the reader, it just doesn’t seem like smart behavior for a spy. Overall, How to Forgive a Highlander is a fun, easy read that I enjoyed. I rate it 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers who enjoy historical romance.

My thanks to Entangled Publishing, LLC and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

An exciting adventure that will take you on a journey of mistaken identity, spies, betrayal, danger and of course a sigh worthy highlander hero and the woman who will challenge him and steal his heart!
Michelle McLean immerses us in a world that only her imagination can create. Once you turn the first page you will be lost in this fast paced tale of William MacGregor, a highlander who had implanted himself in the enemy's camp of Fergus Ramsey, to gather information to help his clan. Seeing his clansman off on a ship to Scotland, he spots a woman, a little too interested in watching the ship depart and immediately wonders if she is not a spy for the Ramsey camp.
Rose Thatcher is a ladies maid who is watching her lady depart on the ship to Scotland and is very uneasy. Fleeing an unwanted bethrothal, Lady Alice is escaping to Scotland and Rose is to cover for her until it is too late for anyone to track her down.
Of course, William kidnaps Rose to see what she know's and all heck breaks loose! Talk about opposites attracting (that is between all the banter back and forth that will make you smile!). Can a "savage" highlander and a proper English lady's maid ever find happiness?
Prepare to be taken on a journey that will keep you entertained for hours and leave you longing for the next book by this fabulous author!

This was quite the interesting book to read, I don't think I've ever seen a couple fight so much! lol Both William MacGregor and Rose Thatcher are stubborn and willful and every time they're together, sparks and words fly!

Having kidnapped Rose, thinking she's a spy, William soon realizes his mistake but by then it's too late and they must pretend to be together while in the enemy's lair. Blaming himself for every bad decision he's ever made and with Rose not letting him forget it, he will still do anything to protect her. As things turn out, though, Rose is the one who ends up very brave and courageous! Love sneaks in between their fighting but their future looks bleak because she wants to return to England and he wants to stay in Scotland. This is a story with lots of action and never a dull moment!!

Another winner! I loved this book! It started with Rose, a lady's maid, being kidnapped by Will, a highlander undercover with a group threatening his kin in Scotland. They both think the worst of each other, but are forced to work together in order to survive their grueling trip to Scotland and the group threatening their very existence. As an uneasy truce is forged, they also find themselves fighting their attraction to each other.

I loved these characters and their devotion to their responsibilities. Will, especially, is a flawed character with a bit of depth that make him interesting. I found myself engaged and invested in their story and wanting them to get their HEA ending. When their circumstances took a dramatic turn for the worse, I loved the way they rose to the occasion and fought to survive.

Put this one at the top of your TBR list. This is a must read for fans of the genre. I'm adding the author to my must read authors' list. While this is part of a series, this is a stand alone novel.

Sarah makes a fantastic heroine. She is fierce, loyal and determined. Will has finally come into his own and made a place for himself in the clan. This is another great highland story that highlights the fierce loyalty of clan and kin. It intertwines nicely with the others in the series that have come before and makes for a great tale.

Scottish Highlands 1667

William (Will) MacGregor is the hero of this story. He will do anything to protect his clan no matter what the cost. No matter if it is espionage, deception, abduction and or treachery. He is no martyr, but will give his own life’s blood to do anything to help and protect his clan and those he loves. Right now the best way to help his clan is to go undercover, his clans biggest (foe) enemy Fergus Ramsay.

Being that Will is not a titled MacGregor or someone easily remembered, he decides to join his band of rotten heartless mercenaries under a fake name. William felt this was his best alternative to be under the same roof and find out Ramsay’s next move. Yet he is putting himself in immediate danger, if anyone discovers he’s a MacGregor, he would be tortured and executed immediately. William has been on top of their moves, where he has been sending secret messages to his clan,” to warn them of Ramsay’s plans.

Fergus Ramsay is responsible for William’s Cousin and Laird John’s arrest and exile, due to he being to former Highland Highwayman. Of course Ramsay blames The MacGregor’s for Ramsays loss of power and destruction too. In addition to losing the woman he thought he was promised: Lady Elizabet-Harding-MacGregor. Elizabet who is now Laird John’s wife which is very much a love match. This angers him the most to losing something he felt was his property. Not that he would do anything besides abuse and possibly murder Elizabet as well as all of The MacGregors. He is pure evil!

The heroine of this story is English woman, Rose Thatcher, ladies maid and friend to Lady Alice Chivers. Lady Alice is on a ship escaping to Scotland, because of an unwanted, forced, arranged marriage. As Rose is watching Philip MacGregor’s ship making sure her Lady is safely boarded and settled. As she had instructions to go to Alice’s family to keep them off her scent for awhile. Rose doesn’t understand how English Lady Alice can go run off to uncivilized Scotland with those Scottish scoundrels.

Rose isn’t aware not that William MacGregor is watching her. William knows their enemy Ramsay has spies everywhere. He is very suspicious seeing Rose watching the ship so closely. This convinces him that she is a spy fearing for his cousins safety. Thinking she is Ramsay spy since she stuck out like a sore thumb.

William abducts Rose by knifepoint, but he soon realizes his horrendous mistake and feels horrible he has brought this innocent woman into a very dangerous situation among these cut throat mercenaries. William realises he now must be her protector and have everyone believe Rose is his women or she would be open to rape and possibly bloodshed or murder.

Of course Rose, who speaks her mind tells Will every chance she gets - what a fool he is for not believing her and putting her in this dangerous situation! They are like oil and vinegar ~ though both are very much physically attracted to one another. Yet as time goes on and they get used to spending time together in close quarters. William has saved Rose’s life more than once. Of course it was still his fault, since he is the one that put her in this situation among this band of dangerous criminals. Will is living with a lot of guilt but will do everything he can to protect Rose and his clan.

Will this English Rose ever completely forgive her Scottish scoundrel? Of course one thing leads to another, soon this abductor and his victim fall in love, but can they smooth out their ruffled feathers? As they both love the countries of their birth. How can they compromise and leave their family and friends? Is this another story of stolen moments and broken hearts that never will be mended? Will they even survive if Ramsay and his corrupt group of mercenaries sniff out the truth? Read and find out in “How to Forgive a Highlander” by Michelle McLean.

Again this is another MacGregor Lairds book that had my pulse racing and gasping for air! This book is the fourth in the series which is absolutely spectacular, as is the entire series by Michelle McLean. I do highly recommend you read “How to Blackmail a Highlander” too. As these two books are closely interconnected. This is Lady Alice and Philip MacGregor’s story, of course you can read either book as a stand alone book too.

This action packed, phenomenal, page turning adventure also has so many elements that readers absolutely love! Such as mystery, suspense, abduction, betrayal, treachery, deception, conspiracy, clan wars, feuding, forgiveness, romance and love. With breathtaking settings, multi dimensional characters, swoon worthy heroes and sassy, back-talking heroines! This also includes brilliant dialogue and unforgettable plotting that will have readers gasping in delight! Another Michelle McLean book I could not put down from start to finish I highly recommend!

Rose Thatcher will do anything to protect her lady and return them both safely to English soil. But the damn Highlander who snatched her off the docks has done nothing but get in her way.
How was William to know that Rose had taken her Lady's place or that he would be so very attracted to his captive.
I liked this title but although it is an amusing story it just didn't strike my fancy as much as previous books by this author had. I was a little disappointed with the thread of this story in general. The mistaken kidnapping I thought would lead to a very good story but that was my mistake.
There was just too much in the way of violence and I didn't see the attraction factor.
I gave this book 3.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization.
These characters just didn't mesh in this readers opinion.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Kidnappings do go wrong!

I dithered around with reading this over a week. Alas that says it all! I generally read a novel of this genre in a couple of hours, give or take. In the end I just couldn't identify with either Rose or William or their story. A bit sad as generally I rather like Michelle McLean's works.
The lead characters William MacGregor and Rose Thatcher are not titled, which gives a different and interesting slant to how events might unfold. It maybe accounts for MacGregor kidnapping Rose under the impression that she's her mistress.
Now we have the perfect scenario for two strong and committed personalities clashing mightily. What we end up with is a distinct lack of verve and dash on either side. Oh sure there's some posturing. But I wasn't convinced. Too bad! I really wanted to become immersed in this one, but I barely dragged myself over the finish line.
Obviously though, I'm in the minority, as many others have absolutely loved it.

Historical romances are not using my thing. I definitely prefer sports or contemporary romances; however, I am Outlander Trash, so whenever I see something about Highlanders it peeks my interest. This book wasn't bad, but I felt like I definitely did myself a disservice by starting on book four and not reading the other ones. You definitely can read this as a standalone, but I felt like I was missing some key details on things. I also felt like something was just missing in this book, and I couldn't figure out what that was.

The plot of this is what grabbed me, a Highlander kidnapping an English Maid because of a case of mistaken identity and they have to work together to defeat their common enemy? LOVE IT! Especially since you could feel the slow burning of attraction between them while they are pretending to be lovers while William is a spy. I loved this part, but I felt like we didn't get enough of that tension between them. It felt like there wasn't enough time to pass for them to really feel that connection. The pacing here just felt a little too fast.

Despite the look of this cover, this book really doesn't have that many steamy scenes. There is really only one sex scene in it towards the end of the book. It's not really that explicit either. At least to me it wasn't. Just a lot of tension and kisses between the two lovers. Which I did really love. I did love the kind of hate-to-love thing they had going on and how they just argue half the time. It made me laugh, because I love characters that can just infuriate each other.

The subplot of Ramsay and the Highlanders fighting was interesting, but I felt like I didn't know what the heck was going on. It's explained somewhat, but I had to get the feeling that if I read the other books I might have understood the conflict a little better. I know book three is supposed to take place at the same time as this one, so there were some offhand comments that had me scratching my head because I didn't remember certain things being talked about.

If you are looking for a HEA book and you like historical romance, I would recommend this one, but maybe read the other books first.

How to Forgive a Highlander is the fourth book in Michelle McLean's The MacGregor Lairds series. If you missed any of the previous books, this one stands alone perfectly well You'll meet some wonderful characters that were introduced in prior books. This one actually takes place during the same time period as book three, How to Blackmail a Highlander. I really liked that book, but I loved this one!

Will MacGregor is a spy for his laird, living embedded among the men serving the evil Ramsay, who is an enemy of the MacGregors. When he spies Rose on a dock watching a departing ship carrying one of his clansman, he believes she might be a spy herself. He abducts her, only to learn that she is in fact ladies maid to Lady Alice, who was also on the ship that just left. Oops. To protect their identities, Will pronounces that Rose is his woman. When they discover that Ramsay and his men are going to attack Will's clan, they must quickly depart and warn them.

Will and Rose are marvelous characters. Will, loyal and charming, always tries to do right, but he has been known to make the wrong decisions - as in, well, kidnapping Rose! Rose may be a ladies maid, but she is one feisty woman. They seem to mix like oil and water, constantly bickering. That can sometimes be annoying in a story, but it works great here. Rose vows she will never forgive Will for abducting her. The more time they spend together, however, the closer they become. Their romance is a slow burn one, simmering beneath the surface until it ignites. There is non-stop action here, which made for one exciting story. If you're like me, you won't be able to put this one down until it reaches its sweet conclusion.

I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

You pretty much get what the synopsis spells out here, folks. If it intrigues you, chances are you’ll enjoy this story line.

Rose gets plucked right off the docks by a worried William who reasons he has no other choice. Of course, things aren’t what they seem, and these two get tangled in over their hand in fending off an OTT crazy bad guy obsessively bent on destroying people they not only work for but love. This dedication to duty takes precedence over their own wants or needs.

Keep in mind these two always bickering, one day lovebirds are very minor sub-characters from previous sequels, who are now the center of this romantic tale. Of course, cameos from other past main characters play an important part, as well.

Between “rising to the occasion but thinks she knows it all” Rose and “alpha protective but can’t win for losing/always blaming himself” Will, I found myself rooting for this couple but not overly wowed by their romantic connection. It was there but usually took a back seat to their perilous situations and doubts. Overall, I enjoyed it enough to keep reading but found it to be more of just an average read. Since I read a lot of books in this genre, perhaps I'can just be verra hard to please sometimes, folks.

Title: How to Forgive a Highlander, Series: The MacGregor Lairds (Book 4), Author: Michelle McLean, Pages: 214, stand-alone but part of a series, dedicated alpha protective hero working as a spy, lady maid heroine, violent fight scenes, romance safe, no love triangle, no OM/OW drama, duty before love, perilous situations.

Book 1 - How to Lose a Highlander
Book 2 - How to Ensnare a Highlander
Book 3 - How to Blackmail a Highlander
Book 4 - How to Forgive a Highlander

William MacGregor has been working as a spy within the ranks of his clan's enemy, Ramsey for some time. But when William kidnaps a woman he believes to be an enemy spy, he inadvertently catalyzes the very attack he'd been trying to avoid, jeopardizing the safety of the clan he's been protecting.

Lady's maid Rose Thatcher will do anything to protect her mistress, Lady Alice, and ensure her safe flight to the Highlands with William's cousin, Phillip, and away from an unwanted marriage. But when Rose is taken from the docks by a highlander who does nothing but impede her plans, she finds herself stuck with him and in enemy camp where they must work together if they have any hope of saving their loved ones.

During their weeks of constant bickering together, real feelings begin to develop between Rose and William. The maid who longs to return to the civilization of England finds herself setting out to save the savage highlander she has come to care for. With their enemy at their doorstep, Rose finds herself determined to help Will, but despite her growing feelings, she still doesn't want to remain in Scotland, longing instead for her home in London, and may well wind up breaking both their hearts.

I have to say I waffled on this book, but I think I settled on not caring much for Rose, though I did like her more than Alice, the previous book's heroine. Still, her insistence on how she and Will could never have a future and she couldn't leave her lady and neither she nor her lady would ever stay in barbaric Scotland got on my nerves. Will was a rather adorably pathetic screw up with a heart of gold who bore entirely too much guilt when his good intentions went awry. Luckily, Rose finally cast aside her fears and excuses and these two truly chose one another for a satisfying ending. I enjoyed this book overall and definitely more than its predecessor.

This is the first book I have read by this author and it is a 100% run read. From page one this book is full of adventure. From mistaken identity and kidnapping to a hostage turned spy and enemies turned to lovers this book surely kept my heart racing from start to finish. This book was fast paced, and I loved being swept along in the whirlwind of it! Most H.R. books are about highborn society characters (or at least one of the main characters is) but neither hero nor heroine in this love story is, and honestly, I feel like it gave the author so much freedom to build their adventure. This book was so exciting and the romantic ending was so perfect I really enjoyed this book.

Rose Thatcher was filled with worry for her mistress as she boarded a boat to run away to the Highlands of Scotland (somewhere she NEVER wanted to go), but her mistress was determined and had a plan. A plan that didn’t involve Rose being kidnapped, in a case of mistaken identity, that very morning, right there on the docks, by a member of the same clan her Lady was running away too. When her kidnapper discovers his error will he release her to carry out her mistress’s plans, or will it be too late for her to escape? Will she be able to forgive him or will they be enemies for the rest of their lives?

William MacGregor has worked very hard to protect his clan from Ramsey their bloodthirsty enemy, to the point where he risked being discovered as a spy in Ramsey’s ranks just to see his cousin safely aboard a boat that will take him home to the highlands. He wasn’t about to let some female, possibly a spy sent by Ramsey to ruin all his hard work. He just wanted to talk to her and make sure she wasn’t dangerous. He soon discovers that she is dangerous, not to his clan but to his heart.

I loved the adventure of this book so much!

My Review....
I’d read the third book in the series, (How to blackmail a Highlander) and enjoyed it. So I started the kindle up and jumped in ....
William loves his clan, there is nothing he wouldn’t do to keep them all safe. So with that in mind, he plans to kidnap a lady, but grabs the wrong one, and so the plot goes from bad to worse, she is nothing but a pain in her arse, but he is drawn to her, and when they aren’t fighting, he is rather intrigued with her (even though she drives him mad!)
Rose is a lady’s maid (someone who dresses and accompany’s a lady, like a companion but at the Ladies beck and call) and truly loves her charge, there isn’t much she wouldn’t do to protect her, and after she’s kidnapped, Rose is worried about her lady even more. And this “man” has a lot to account for. How dare he do this, her temper gets her into trouble a few times, but when they aren’t taking shots at each other, she recognises Will’s love for his clan and his good intentions.
But what does this mean for our couple? William longs for Scotland, and Rose wants to return to London. Is this just a “Highland Fling” ? Or will they be able to compromise?
The book runs alongside book 3, it has almost the same timeline. It’s well written and very detailed.

William MacGregor will lie, spy, and happily die to protect his clan from their greatest enemy. But when he kidnaps the wrong woman, he triggers the very events he’d been working so hard to prevent. And puts everyone in danger. Rose Thatcher will do anything to protect her lady and return them both safely to English soil. But the damn Highlander who snatched her off the docks has done nothing but get in her way. She’d love to ditch the bastard, but if they want to save their respective loved ones, they are going to have to stay together. Somewhere along the grueling journey to Scotland, their constant bickering turns into something more. Something worth fighting for. But how can an English lady’s maid, who longs for the safe, comfortable life she had in London, find love with a Highlander who can’t wait to wipe England’s dust off his feet? If they can’t defeat the enemy they accidentally led home, they might not live long enough to find out.
I really loved this book! It moved very quickly and had plenty of action. I loved both main characters and loved following them through their journey. I’ve read many books by this author and she doesn’t disappoint! I highly recommend.

This was a sweet and charming book with lots of action, an adorable and charming couple whose bickering and nagging made me smile and laugh a lot. The characters felt authentic and genuine and even though I was upset that William was really hard on himself while I thought that he was simply human, I really loved those two.
Rose is something else, strong, loving, funny and loyal to the core. I loved to see her slowly (and thoroughly) fall for William and vice versa.

Towards the end, when those two to have to figure out how they can overcome the problems that keep them from acknowledging their feelings or at least from daring to hope for a future because - how could they dream of a future together if one of them is supposed to live in Scotland and the other one in England?
But having overcome everything they did - how could they give up these dreams?

I didn't know the other books in this series but I had no problem to get into this one and to stay captivated till the end. Now I'm really looking forward to reading the other books in this series even though Rose and William were rather special and I'm not sure that the others will be as sweet as those two but I really hope so.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

While this is the fourth book in this series, it is the first for me. I could tell though that prior characters from the first three books were either discussed here or made appearances. It was not necessary for me to read the prior books as the author did a wonderful job in lightly relaying pertinent facts to me, the reader, so I would not be lost and to understand the story-line.

I loved William. He is a wonderful male protagonist. He followed through with his actions but when he knew he was wrong, he did apologize and he truly felt the ramifications deeply. Rose was a strong lady's maid and the perfect foil for William. Both felt deeply for their individual cause but she was able to also see the "big picture" and adapted easily to the different situations that she found herself in.

This book was also written in a dual POV format. I could easily identify with both characters and relate to their actions.

I recommend this book.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

Not my favorite book of this series, mainly because the hero of the story, William, is made out to be kind of a bungling, inept spy for John. He is supposed to keep an eye on their enemy, Ramsey, and report back but things go wrong when he kidnaps Rose.

If you like stories with the two main people who love to fight and argue, this is the book for you! Not my favorite type of romance so while I enjoy the growing sexual tension, I don't like the constant bickering. Plus, Rose kept following behind Will and pointing out all the things he was doing wrong. Kind of a turn off for poor Will.

Glad that they finally resolved the Ramsey threat and can enjoy some peace! Will and Rose get their HEA but I really wondered if it was going to happen up to the very end!

This is the first book by Michelle McLean that I have read and it was not until the end I realised this is book four of a series. This did not affect my reading of this book but with more history of the other characters, it may have made this read a bit better for me to understand at times. I love a Highlander book but this one just did not completely grab my attention and I must admit I did skim some pages and paragraphs at times.

I did get some enjoyment for the two main characters fighting and bickering thought out the story. It is a very quick read and I would suggest you read from the start of the series to get a better feeling from the storyline.
This review is my honest and voluntary thoughts of this book that I have received an ARC of thanks to the publisher and NetGalley.
