Send me book recommendations for humor, psychology/sociology (criminal is the most fun), indie publishing, artificial intelligence (not too technical; I'm an English major FFS), or marketing. Bonus points if you recommend something that's all of the above.
I read fantasy, sci-fi, and lit fic unless someone pushes it on me, at which point I rebel and make sure to never read that title. I don't understand it either.
When I read the review for Book 1 I was thinking..."yaaas! This will be awesome to see "The greatest story ever told" from a FEMALE Messiah's point of view". However THAT is not what I found. I've been a Christian for over 20 years... however I believe more in the "love your neighbor as your self, Turn the other cheek, Blessed be the poor and the fatherless, lean not on your own understanding and For I Am with you" lessons and lifestyle than any of the more controversial shit some people would rather focus on and fight about. Be good and do good and God is Good...All the time. That's kinda my point of view. This being said I was kinda shocked at how God was being portrayed and thought the text pretty perverse (and honey, I aint no prude, bless your heart). But I completely 100% got the second book as soon as I finished the first, and normally I'm not a binge reader...but I just finished the 6th...and please Claire, get your post it notes together and finish the 7th cause I'm dying here. The 6th was so good ASIDE from the Jessica crisis's (haha...sounds like Christ) but the Difficult Conversation 101 class taught me a whole hell of a lot...so thanks for that. I'm so in to this book series. It's Funny ( like LOL funny) crude, completely thought provoking and has developed into SUCH an amazing story line. I was almost positive from Book 1 that D.T. was who she is...and I still found and pondered all the "seeds of doubt" you planted along the way...which, as you intended...clever fox you....was still pissed as H-E-dblhockystix that it really was...that person. **I agree with God that spoilers should not be given". So, cheers to Claire Taylor, the real mother of Jessica Christ (Destiny...love u too girl) and my The Lord bless all else she brings forth!!!!
H. Claire Taylor goes places that other authors rarely dare, and in doing makes the protagonist a highly relateable satire in whom we can all see a little of ourselves. The end of Book 6 succeeds in doing one thing above all else: making you wish that Book 7 were available already!
I loved how she further developed the characters - especially Deloris! Didn't see that coming in books 1-5 but when the hints started early in this book I knew this was gonna be a hell of a ride. Jessica is even more 'irreverent' in this book and let's face it-that's what we're all looking for. Can't wait for book 7. Please don't let that be the last in the series. The world needs more of this humour -especially nowadays. Great Read!!!!
I absolutely love this series and this book is the best so far. I just could not stop reading even though reading meant I’d be late for almost everything else. It’s good to see Jessica finally coming into her own.
Caveat to my 3 star rating- the ending of the book, combined with my genuine investment in this series as a whole story bumped it up from a 2, which admittedly, is a lower rating than I thought I couls give a Jessica Christ book. It isn't that book 6 wasn't good, but it was simply a little too meandering and long- I think I would have liked it more with less bakery plotline, less about the mundane details of Jessica's 20-something angst- I actually was kind of bored for the first half of the book- the pacing was off. The second half greatly improved, and the last 1/4 was more in line with the humor, particularly the God conversations, and lack of subtlety that drew me to this series in the first place. By the last page, I was excited for book seven, which from the author's note, seems like it will be the last book in the series, and I hope it brings the laugh-out-loud fun and absurdity from the first couple of books back and concentrates more on the situational originality of the series versus the more everyday human problems that readers can find in less subversive fiction. So averaging out my rating-- three stars-- 2 for a slow start and pacing issues, but 4 for making me very much look forward to the next/last book in this bizarre and lovable series.
I read all 6 of the Jessica Christ books, and loved them all for a number of reasons. First, they are funny. The author inserts many ironic twists that change the story of Jesus Christ in a way that makes you think: why couldn't God's child be a girl? Another reason I liked this series is that the author manages to get inside to mind of a child, an adolescent and ultimately a young adult struggling to make sense of her unusual talents.
Gutted. I read this thinking the next instalment was ready and waiting. And it isn't. I've still got 2 months to wait. Now I have to find something else to read.
I did feel that the Devil would make an actual appearance at some point and it really comes to a head here. You find yourself thinking "no, don't let it be X", knowing that it is X despite their past. I read this over 3 days thinking there was another book waiting for me. Oh no, that isn't out yet. Aaaarrrghhhh.
Oh, by the way, book 6 is great. Read it. But read the other 5 first. Obviously.

I thought this was the last book and throughout my reading, I kept thinking "there is no way she can wrap up everything in one book" - well, I'm pleasantly surprised that there will be one more! Knowing that, this book does a great job of advancing the story. I enjoyed seeing some growth and maturity in Jessica. I'm also glad that the Devil was finally revealed (and enjoyed some of God's comments leading up to the reveal). There were a number of errors in the book.
All in all, a very solid book and I'm glad that I have one more in my future.
