Brice ~ Life hasn’t always been easy for Brice. With his own mother abandoning him when he was a teenager, and his father having a dangerous job, life has been lonely. That is, until his father decides he needs a bodyguard he doesn’t want. So why does he find himself noticing how attractive the broody bodyguard is? And why does he want him to stay, after all?
Carter ~ Staying out of sight is Carter’s specialty. It’s something he learned while in the military and something he put into play while being on the run. Staying in one spot for too long isn’t something that sets well with the surly man. Initially, keeping an eye on the young man isn’t exactly what Carter wants to do, but now something isn’t letting him leave.
Personalities clash and tempers rise with these two men, making every day they’re together more challenging than the last. As the days pass, more secrets are revealed as their feelings for each other grow stronger. But when one man’s past comes back to haunt him, each man will stop at nothing to protect the other.
*Promise to Shield is Book 2 of the Personal Protectors series. It is intended for a mature audience with adult situations and language. Promise to Shield also mentions cutting and past abuse.*
Similiar to the first book BUT not too similiar that you have problems to enjoy it.
Just one thing that was a little bummer from the moment Elliot mentioned the older dude he hooked up I knew who it was but that doesn’t diminish my excitement for the next book!!
Brice and Carter Amazingly written story. Even as being a width story this one felt intimate, the focus constantly returning to what makes this book awesome: Brice and Carter
Brice is lonely, he has no one. Well he has a father who he sees rarely, maybe ones in a year. This same father give him a bodyguard... Carter. Carter doesn’t talk he grumbles and orders around. This gives Brice a good reason to be the biggest brat ever. When Carter’s last is hunting them it’s getting ugly.
Really a great read. Consistent written with strong personalities. With every chapter we get to know them better... that was a wonderful way of revealing. The sexual tension between them was hot and their fighting ever hotter.
The story took just the right unexpected turns to make it a strong and captivating read. There is a lot going on and the angst was palpable. A splendid plot and thank goodness there is even a hea no... not sappy at all *wink*
This was book 2 in the "Personal Protectors" series. I loved this book. Brice Armstrong is the son of Larry the undercover FBI agent from the first book his mother left him and his father works a lot when his father gets him a bodyguard they don't hit it off. Carter has been running a lot never staying in one place for too long so when Larry offers him a job he takes it. Brice and Carter don't get along Carter finds him annoying but he knows that Brice is lonely and he sees that his father is not there for him. When these two hook up its hard and fast and explosive. I liked both of these characters a lot Carter takes his job seriously and when one of Bruce's co-workers starts hitting on him making him uncomfortable he deals with it turns out Walt was just a plant. When Brice falls and hurts his ankle after they have sex the first time Carter gets mad because he didn't tell him. When Carter's past catches up with him he hides out with Brice with the help of Rusty the bar owner from the first book and Beckett's uncle. When Brice and his friend Elliot are kidnapped by the man who is hunting Carter he finds out who his friends are and with the help of Beckett and Rusty they get Brice and Elliot back but they are hurt bad. I loved that they stop kidding themselves and fell in love. This book also had a surprise turns off the older man that Elliot talked about was Larry and Brice didn't take it so well. This was a good book that I loved I read and listened to this book. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Larry and Elliot
I am LOVING this series. And after the rough start in book one with Carter, I was ready to see him get settled. I knew there was a story behind this man. Hell, anyone in the military has a story but I knew there was more. AND from the awkwardness of some others in this story, I have a feeling I know where book three is heading. And knowing Brice's and Elliot's penchant for snark, yeah, this is going to be fun lol. I felt bad for Carter in book one. Even though he never said much, other than grunting really, he was lonely and was a tad envious of Walker and Bennett. But with Walker's case, he couldn't leave them yet. But Larry asked him what was he going to do after and after finding out why he would want to know, Carter took him up on a job. Larry needed help in protecting his son. His job in the Feds made things hairy sometimes and he wanted Brice protected. And when they meet??? LMAO!!! Oh hell no! Brice is furious. He's not two. He doesn't need a babysitter. And after trying to shake Carter off he knows he can't do that anymore, because Carter is two steps ahead of him. But he does everything he can to get under Carter's skin, and it works. Problem is Carter is getting under Brice's as well. And these two are cracking. me. up. Oh my word. So much snark, sass, and downright assholishness. It is so funny. But when push comes to shove, and Carter's past comes to the forefront, Brice's life is on the line, along with his best friend Elliot. And they don't know if they will make it out alive. There are things left unsaid, but it may stay that way. It's a shame it takes losing or almost losing someone to make you see the light. And Carter is going to do everything he can to make sure they make it through. This book is so full of chemistry, action, sass, snark, and hot af sex. Full of angst, guilt, but hope and peace. I love the characters in this book. This series. There were a few grammatical things that need looking at but it didn't change the dynamic of the book. I think if you guys haven't gotten into this series yet, you should. Brice is just the best lol.
I've been waiting for a while to read Promise To Shield, the second book in Brittany Cournoyer's Personal Protectors series.
Brice's father, Larry, is an absentee dad, always working and emotionally distant. Thus, Brice is pretty much alone in the world. But then Larry hires Carter to protect Brice, setting off a series of events that include some danger, some steamy moments, and falling in love.
I love the evolution of these complex characters in this story. Initially, Carter sees Brice as a young pain in the ass, since this is how Brice treats him. Over time, they are able to understand the other, and start caring more than they ever expected.
I have come to love Brittany Cournoyer's writing style. She manages to tell a wonderfully emotionally story, with a lot of character growth, all while including some suspense and danger.
Carter and Brice are a lot of fun, in addition to their sizzling chemistry together.
In addition, we also get the pleasure of past characters. Catching up with them is a whole lot of fun, as well as intriguing.
Promise To Shield is everything I was hoping it would be, thrilling, gripping and romantic. Now I can't wait for book three!
While I rounded up the rating for the first book, I can't do so for Promise to Shield.
I liked the premise and the writing, although this series is in desperate need of an editor or just someone to check for spelling mistakes, double words and false names.
These "mistakes" and also Carter's behavior didn't make this book as enjoyable as I hoped. Carter was just too domineering and growly for most of the book. And don't get me started on the sex scenes....meh.
All in all Promise to Shield had some good ideas, but it could be so much better with an editor.
Carter becomes Brice's bodyguard/babysitter because of Brice's fathers job. They get along ok but irritate the bejezzus out of each other. Then Carter's past comes back to haunt him... Someone is after him and Carter might be in the firing line. There was plenty of action in this story. Despite a few editing issues, I found it to be a good solid 4 stars.
While it was readable overall, I found this disappointing. I think the trope was supposed to be enemies to lovers but it did not suit me. Some books can carry the reader past any less than believable elements but this didn’t meet that challenge for me.
Yes Lordy Lordy I was hoping this second book in the series was about Carter because I fell in love with him in the first book. He was surly and always grunting and I knew there was something there about him that was going to come out and I am so glad that this is his story.
Brice oh Brice he has a hard life with no mother and barley a father. His father has a job that takes him away for months at a time and he is always alone but his father wants his son to be protected when some threats arise so he hires Carter to protect his son.
Carter is a man of few words and I mean few words but he is one of my favorite characters in this series so far. He has served his time in the Military and he is out and living a life out of sight because he has someone stalking him. He never stays in one place for long so no one will find him. So why take this job protecting Brice well he does it as a favor for Brice's father.
At first these two do not get along but as time goes by and Brice is in danger Carter is determined to protect him at all costs. But will these two ever disclose their true feelings for one another or will they just stay friends? What happens when the stalker comes to get them? This is a must read series and I need book three because this ending has me thinking I know who is going to get their own book.
I was really glad to see Carter as we start the book. I liked him from the last book. He was really mysterious, but also seemed like a great guy. We find out that Larry hired Carter as a bodyguard for his son, Brice. This book takes place about a year later. Carter is still his prickly, closed off self, and Brice is annoyed with having someone around. There wasn't much indication (well to me anyway) that there was any sexual tension between them over the past year, but it seemed that all of a sudden there was a bunch between them. One taste just isn't enough, and once they broke the dam of need, they couldn't stay away. I really liked seeing Carter open up and realize that he was worthy of having someone with him, and Brice was a great match for him. There was a lot of action in the last third of the book, and I have to admit that I didn't see it coming the way it played out. Book 3 should be really interesting. I can't wait to see how that all turns out!!
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by LesCourt Author Services
Good story but too drawn out, needs better editing
I was looking forward to Carter’s story as I really liked him in book one of this series. The plotline is also a bit far-fetched. Larry feels his 24 year old son Brice needs a body guard, absent any actual threat or incident? And said body guard, Carter, drives him to and from work every day but just sits in the parking lot all day? How is that body guarding? What prevents something from happening to him while he’s inside his office where Carter can’t see him or get to him? I must have said this to myself twenty times during the book!
This story had its moments but overall it’s too drawn out and thus it’s easy to lose focus/interest. Also, lots of typos, incorrect word usage, using the wrong character name etc. The book would have been better served with better editing.
I like Carter but Brice is a bit hard to take. While I understand his feelings of abandonment it strikes me as a bit crazy that he wouldn’t have any friends. He even, early in the book, says he has no local friends. Then all of a sudden there are friends he goes out with and one he refers to as his “very best friend.” I hate inconsistencies like this. Again...editing. Brice is also kind of whiny.
Not only did the plotline need to be crisper and move along better but there are story elements that add nothing and others that could have enhanced the story if they’d been better utilized. There are other aspects that are just ridiculous but I can’t elaborate without spoilers...believe me, you’ll know when you get to them.
Enjoyed seeing Rusty and Beckett again. Not sure if book three will interest me.
This is Carter and Brice's story. I like this book and did enjoy the snark between them. Story felt like it just missing something to me. But would I recommend it? Yes. Will I read more in the series? Yes. I am excited to see how the next story pans out. Thanks for the arc.
2.2 Stars. Needs a good proofreader and some beta readers. Why does Brice even need a body guard? Could his father be more of a dick? What happened to Carter’s scars? How could Brice go from having zero friends to having some friends that he hangs out with sometimes to having Elliot as his best friend. The characters were not well developed and not terribly likable. The story was unbelievable and lacked continuity. Overall rather disappointing.
A father's love puts Brice and Carter in close proximity to one another and while Carter was willing to do the job, it doesn't keep their personalities from clashing, often. Attraction is buried deep under their animosity, but when an enemy from Carter's past puts them in danger the situation changes and their feelings change along with it, deepening to something irreplaceable. If they can shield one another from the dangers and survive, they might get the chance to let down all their walls and keep what they've found.
From the very beginning the sniping, childishness, and assholery took center stage. I'm not a fan. I do understand that Brice had some major issues and was acting out in the only way he knew how. Totally get it. But it went on for sooooooo looooooong that I wanted to skip so many pages of their interactions because none of it gave much insight beyond the first couple chapters, none of it progressed their feelings or changed their relationship, none of it made me like either man...and that's a damn shame because the way the story ended made me want to like them so much.
The drama was definitely big and the conclusion came quick on its heels. There wasn't a ton of build-up, that was used on drawing out their insane chemistry through hate-sex as well as their constant bickering. I don't know that I'm a fan of the villain. The players were slightly predictable as were their accomplices, but the situation did work. Jillian was the most disappointing and I felt that her little confession was forced and contrived rather than natural and the confrontation in the hospital didn't really give closure because the same feelings of betrayal and hurt were the same after their earlier phone call. Ultimately, I think the bad people were sufficiently bad and was surprised by the amount of damage that was allowed to happen at the end. I wasn't mad at that surprise despite all the pain and awfulness Brice and Elliot had to endure.
Speaking of surprises, the set-up for the next story was a big shock when it was revealed though I could see how it came together afterward; hindsight is always 20/20. With enough of these little surprises and all the heart and honesty that came at the end I wasn't ready to write this one off. My extreme annoyance with their quarreling immaturity was tempered with the way things ended.
I actually really liked Carter in the first book. He seemed like a voice of reason and like he had a clear head.
This book erased all of that. In this, Carter is controlling and obnoxious. The man who told Beckett he was acting like a dick to Walker and he better fix it was now, in fact, the dick.
I was beyond frustrated with his need to control everything with Brice. He’s a bodyguard, not a parent. This is something that Brice mentions to his therapist, and his therapist suggests he talk with Carter about it and make him listen. Does that ever happen? No.
Instead, Carter continues to control Brice’s life, and Brice lets him. Brice’s lack of autonomy was frustrating as hell. Sure, he got angry that Carter bossed him around, but he always did what he said in the end.
Adults are allowed to skip a therapy appointment. Brice didn’t need Carter to threaten him and force him to go. He sounded like his parent in that scene, it was almost disturbing.
The first time they had sex was awful. Carter was really fucking rough. I don’t understand why he would do that considering his negative experience with bottoming. It pissed me off because it further proved that Carter just saw Brice as a thing to control.
Carter needed to be taken down a peg or five.
An issue I had with the first book, and one that I had with this one as well, was the drama for the sake of drama.
Brice struggles with self-harm, or so we are told. Again, the author throws serious issues in the story without examining it beyond the surface level (like with Beckett’s PTSD in the last book).
This supposed self-harm struggle is mentioned maybe 3 times in the book. In the epilogue, Brice tells us that he realized he didn’t have the urge anymore. Great.
What was the point of even including that? Nothing about it added anything to the story. It didn’t affect the plot, the characters, his relationships, nothing. You take it out, and absolutely nothing changes.
This author likes to throw in these things and not follow through. If you’re going to include real, serious issues like PTSD and self-harm, you better give it the credit and space it deserves.
Otherwise, it just looks like you’re trivializing the issue and using it as a character trait and nothing more.
Promise to Shield is the second book in the Personal Protectors series by Brittany Cournoyer. It is not necessary to read the first book in this series (Vow of Protection) to enjoy reading Promise to Shield but reading it will help you to fully understand the series as whole though. Brittany Cournoyer’s books are always fun and quick reads for me. The main characters in this book are Carter and Brice. Carter was first introduced in Vow of Protection, he helped Beckett to protect Walker. In the first book, there was a lot of mystery surrounding Carter, and in Promise to Shield, we slowly learn more about Carter, and he went through a lot of hard things! Carter in Promise to Shield is currently a bodyguard for Brice who is the son of an undercover government agent. Carter and Brice’s love story was full of humor and it was not easy for either of these men to finally admit that they actually had feelings for each other. I had a lot of fun reading Carter’s and Brice’s interactions with each other because they liked to taunt and annoy each other. Throughout the story they slowly learn more about each other and through several ups and downs they fell in love. Carter and Brice both have a lot of issues to work through, but as they learned to trust each other more and support each other they find out they are stronger together than apart. I have read several of Brittany Cournoyer’s books, and I enjoyed reading all of them, including Promise to Shield. I really appreciate her writing style because it is so easy to get hooked into the story and just lose myself in the story. Also, I love her sense of humor and there were several time I actually laughed out loud. In Promise to Shield it is a well-rounded story, and there was also plenty of action, danger, as well as romance and tender moments. I definitely recommend this book to read. I am really looking forward to the third book in this series because I cannot wait to learn more about the next couple. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
The second book of Brittney Cournoyer's Personal Protectors series features the friend and comrade-in-arms Carter who'd assistant Beckett with not just guarding, but actually protecting his charge in the First book. Carter initially showed a lot more character development in Vow of Protection, the First series book. At first he seemed one-dimensional though humorous, but as the story progressed more of his personality was revealed. This also occurred in the Second book.
Being assigned a very challenging young man with Daddy issues and not the kinky kind was frustrating, aggravating, and made Carter consider some drastic means to get his client's son to comply with his directives. Though he made Carter want quit he'd never back down from a challenge so no he wasn't going to let the bratty shenanigans of the younger man make him forget all his training, pride, and patience.
They both frustrated each other. Each had enemies that needed guarding against. Somehow they were going to make a way forward despite how different they were. This is definitely an Opposites Attract storyline. Carter took his job as a Bodyguard very seriously. He felt a definite moral dilemma with his feelings for his client's son became more than his job.
I enjoyed how these two sparred with each other. Silent bodyguard Carter has a repertoire of sarcastic comebacks that kept his charge on his toes, thinking of how he could draw out the recalcitrant egnimatic man. There was a need for Carter's services, once the action started there were just brief lulls before it began again. I can't wait to read Number Three in the series. The First book really set up this book. You get introduced to both Carter and his client.
A fantastic follow up to Vow of Protection! We are following Carter who helped out in book one as he is hired as personal protection for Brice. Brice's father works for the FBI and is currently undercover and his fears for his son lead to him to ask for Carter's help. After spending a year with the young man, neither has much fondness for the other until tensions build enough between the two to come to blows. What follows for both is attraction, denial and a yearning for the other that is very hard to ignore. Unfortunately Carter's past catches up to them before things can progress with the help of someone they know. I am really enjoying this series so far! Brittany is giving us some brilliant characters with depth to them along with a great relationship with each other. The story has energy, tension and a huge dose of attraction that brings both men together in their times of need. In the situation that they find themselves in, it's hard not to become close to those around you, though they get a lot closer than most! Everything evolves naturally between the two with hesitance, reticence from Carter. The pacing of the story works really well with the story line being helped along with a dose of drama and action along the way. Brittany has built a really interesting world for these characters and I cannot wait for book three! I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
This is my first book by Brittany Cournoyer but won't be my last(really want to read the first book in this series) This is the second book in this series but it does work okay out of order. I followed quite well however I would have liked to have known a bit more about Carter and why he was guarding Brice, and Larry Brice's dad. All that was probably covered in the first book and didn't really take away from this. Carter has been living with Brice as his built-in bodyguard for a year or more now. Brice doesn't like it and is quite the brat. I like the Growly Carter and Bratty Brice. I loved the back and forth fighting that led to hot sex. I thought the story was a perfect mix of tension, intrigue, mystery, suspense, and romance. I loved it!
Kenneth Obi added a great flair with unique voices for each man. You could hear Carters growls and grunts and the snark in Brice's voice. and the sex? OH MY! if you have the opportunity get the audio, it really does bring the book to life and make boring chores much more fun.
Carter is hired to guard Brice from possible retaliation from enemies of his father. Brice wants to be in contact with his father. Not have a bodyguard as a intermediary.
Their story starts with both of them being frustrated by where they are in life. Toss in the fact that Brice doesn’t want Carter around him and things are far from ideal. I like the fact that both of them have no problem with saying exactly what’s on their mind. This also crosses over to the attraction between them.
I’m also glad that Walker, Beckett, Rusty and Bertie are a part of the story. Elliott... I kinda love Elliott. He is the type of best friend that everyone needs. I definitely didn’t see the surprise twist involving him coming.
This is a great addition to the series! Can’t wait to see what happens next!
I fell in love with Carter in Vow of Protection, so I was happy to finally have this book! After all the drama ending with Beckett and Walker, Carter is now on a job protecting Larry’s son Brice. While they are both snarky to each other, you can see the chemistry between them waiting to burst! And when they get together it’s quick, hard and hot!!!
But when Carter’s past comes back, he needs to protect the one he’s fallen for!
I love the show of family in this book as once again Beckett and Rusty are by Carters side to help him!
We also get a little glimpse into something I didn’t see coming but I cannot wait to find out more!
Although Carter was a real gruff, grunty a-hole, Brice turned him into a big sappy pile of mush! And like Brice, I did miss the alpha Carter lol
But it was another great read and I enjoyed it very much! ❤️
This is book 2 of the Personal Protectors series and while it can be read as a standalone I would definitely recommend reading book 1 first. At the end of book one Carter gets a new job protecting the son of Larry, the undercover FBI agent. The trouble is that Larry's son, Bryce is an adult and does not want a babysitter. Carter still communicates in grunts and Bryce takes great entertainment in trying to wind him up. One evening passions boil over and they sleep together, strictly a one time thing of course. Then, Carter's past begins to catch up with him, putting Bryce in danger. We also catch up with some familiar faces from book 1 which I loved. As in the last book, there were plenty of twists along the way. I devoured this book in a single sitting and I'm so excited for the rest of the series.
Passion, intrigue, betrayal, trust and love are key elements of this awesome story. i was captivated with the plot and i so enjoyed the character development of the MC's. This was an intense and complicated story that i thoroughly enjoyed reading.
Carter and Brice are complex and interesting characters that have such chemistry and connection that you can feel it. i really enjoyed seeing characters from book one become part of the this story.
This book could be read as a stand-alone, however I would strongly recommend reading book one, Vow of Protection first. I liked how i got to know some of the characters and got a feel for them from book one.
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my review
Carter is hiding from his past when he is tasked with watching over his friends son Brice. He isn’t really happy with the situation but eventually comes to care for Brice. After Brice accepts the fact that he has the grumpy, sexy man as a bodyguard he starts to warm up to him. When Brice is taken as as a way to get to Carter, both men have to be strong to survive a crazy man and his twisted revenge.
Even though I liked Carter from the previous book it took a while to really warm up to his story. Carter was overbearing and Brice was a brat. When they started opening up to each other the story improved. Brice was overloaded with snark and Carter gave it right back to him. Their sweet moments were really nice. I’m looking forward to Larry’s story.
Carter is hired to protect Brice from his father’s enemies. They surely have a love hate relationship and Brice sure has a sassy mouth in him and Carter is very growly. LOL
Their chemistry together is great. My heart has really gone out to Brice as he is essentially alone in life with his absentee dad. Carter has his friends as his family. It’s great to see Beckett and the gang being ones family.
This book kept me on the edge and some surprises I didn’t see coming and we get the guys to find their “home”. I so can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I really liked Promise to Shield, what a great second book of the Personal Protector series. I liked that Walker and Beckett from the first book were included in this story. I thought Brice and Carter’s story was sweet and snarky and definitely hot. I like a fast-paced story when there’s some guns, violence and anxiety, it goes well together. I like that it was a bit gritty and not easy, even though the romance ends well. I can’t wait for the next book in the series and I also hope to read a lot more about Brice and Carter’s story. I am totally enjoying this series and definitely recommend it.
Promise to Shield is the second book in Brittany Cournoyer's Personal Protectors series. Brice and Carter are steamy together. The story is highly entertaining with action, funny moments, sweet moments, hot times and some angst. The two main characters clash and then come together with passion... and the supporting cast of characters are intriguing as well. Definitely makes me want more from this series.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
Brice and Carter were an interesting couple. In the beginning, when Carter would barely speak to Brice, I had a hard time liking him. Maybe it would have been easier if I'd read book one first. Regardless, I did enjoy both men as their relationship progressed. Brice was really easy to love. I also liked the secondary characters, especially Elliot. I can't wait to read more about him! This book had nice sexy scenes, great action, well-placed humor, and bad guys who were easy to hate. I liked it a lot!
