Let's just say I didn't have to worry about reading and reviewing the book in just one day because IT WAS UNPUTDOWNABLE! Ella Fox packed so much emotions in the story of Garrett and Shaelyn. The devastating ending totally broke my heart. I don't know how can I wait for next book. But don't worry! It is not all about sadness and heartache! It is so much more.
I was lost in the story from the first chapter. Shaelyn is an amazing woman. She faced so many difficulties while growing up but she is compassionate, smart and proud. Garrett is nothing like a typical Hollywood star. He is protective, respectful and a perfect (gentle)man. Not so gentle in bed though. It's a dream-come-true modern day love story. I was doing a lot "aww","ooh","ahh", "so sweet" etc in my mind all the way. UNTIL the author decided to take us for a spin. My smiling gooey-feeling heart turned to a crying and praying one. I am telling you that you won't be ready for it.
You need this book because you will feel the impact of the story. You will feel each emotion inside. Ella Fox did a stunning job of taking us through the rollercoaster ride! And Garrett, I am rooting for you. Don't fail me!

Shaelyn Monroe's life is a freaking nightmare. An emotionally abusive mother who never loses the chance to inflict pain on her daughter whenever she can. Shaelyn though is biding her time she'll be eighteen soon and will be out from under her mothers control. Her only saving grace has been her grandmother Goldie who has been the one constant in her young life. When Shaelyn's mother uproots her from her last year of high school in LA to the middle of nowhere Utah where she will be working on a movie set it's pretty much the last straw.

Garrett Riordan former TV childhood star he'd grown up being adored by the public. That is behind him now and it's the movies he's been making since that have brought him to being a household name.

It's here he sees Shaelyn for the first time and falls in love with this quiet beautiful young woman. The age factor him being twenty-six and Shaelyn nearly eighteen is not going to stop him though. He knows she is the one and he will wait for her no matter how long it takes. She's not impressed with his fame or his fortune. She sees him the man and nothing else. Garrett knows that not all is rosy where her relationship with her mother Jewell is concerned. He sees her for what she is, a manipulative and abusive woman. But with Shaelyn keeping her mouth shut and not disclosing anything his hands are tied.

These two are joined at the hip while filming, when she's not studying on the set working her way to finishing her high-school diploma, she's working as his personal assistant a job he created so she'd be away from her mother. When Jewell loses it and attacks her daughter, it's Garrett that Shaelyn calls and thats when all bets are off. Sweeping in and rescuing her he makes it clear that he's all in. And that he's not letting her go.

A fairytale of romance and love are on the horizon. Just when you think life could not be anymore perfect it's here that the heartbreak begins. Sometimes things happen and there's no reason for it but when their perfect world is shattered in a heartbreaking way it's going to take more than I love you's to fix this.

*Be warned the cliffhanger is there. But it was needed. There is no way you could rush this story and I for one am waiting anxiously for the next book On The Way Back.

Full review and rating to come when 2nd book is release.

I don’t like it when authors ask the readers not to spoil it for other readers. First of all this was not an ARC so she shouldn’t ask me this and second, I’m a spoiler whore and i like spoilers before starting a book. With this one I went in blind. And then some readers take it seriously and when you ask someone if they can spoil it for you they go “oh the author asked me not to spoil it” please... if you ask me I’ll spoil it.

Safety gang girls. This books is safe, safe from OW drama.
I’ll give some details I considered the hero a manwhore before meeting her because he told the heroine that he had slept with a lot of women before her. why said that if he wasn’t a manwhore? Of course let’s give the him a prize. Yep, heroine is a virgin.

Heroine is also 17 and he is 26.

*******************Spoilers ahead*********************

This was my first ever book by this author, it began with the couple separating and the H begging for them to try again then goes back to when they first met.

He's a 26 year old movie star, she's a 17 year old High school student. He wanted her from the moment they met but thankfully waited until she turned 18

,Her mom was horribly abusive

It was a bit like a lifetime movie but good enough

I could've done without knowing he'd lost his virginity to a much older woman and was a Playboy previously

He was completely devoted to her

Why'd he have to say my little virgin in sexy times, it creeped me out 😂

h was a virgin

It ends when their baby is born asleep. I know that this author asked that readers leave reviews without this spoiler but honestly I wish I'd have known before I read this. Not every reader is able to read something like this in a book. It's heartbreaking and I cried like a baby and would've preferred a warning. (I didn't reread reviews before I started)

I like that he wasn't willing to give up or let her go, I'll be moving on to book 2

(This Review concerns BOTH books of the Retake Duet)

5 ‘ Here Comes The Sun’ Stars

Whoaaaaa… What a LIFE IMPACTFUL/ALTERING story!!! You know those books that mark your life and you will never forget?! This duet is exactly that for me! Retake Duet just gave my heart the most intense of workouts. It is so much more than a romance! Garrett and Shae’s beautiful story is ALL about the journey, the healing, the passion and most of all the UNMOVING LOVE!!!

I have to start by saying that I was going to separate do a review for both books, separately, but at the end, I just couldn’t do it. Their journey is so impactful for me, and for that reason, I’m expressing in this review, my feelings for the duet as a whole, because that’s what it was, the story may have been split in two parts, but I read them back to back, and my overall feelings are for their story, their path, and all the emotions took root from the first chapter in book one and didn’t even end with the last word of the Epilogue. They will stay with me FOREVER!

“He looks at you like you’re something precious he’s had on layaway for a long-ass time and he’s two payments away from taking it home.”

In his arms I discovered what the term weak at the knees meant. He tasted like happily ever after and liquid lust all rolled into one, and I never, ever wanted it to end.

Another reason for the combined review is the fact that I really don’t want to spoil anything about Garrett and Shaelyn’s story. I went in blind to read this and I am sooooooo thankful I did, the EMOTIONAL IMPACT of their journey is just unbeatable! Every moment was a surprise, every step was discovery, and every single emotion they felt, I felt it right along with them.

The need I have for you is all-consuming. I wake up thinking about you, I go to bed thinking about you, and when I’m asleep, I dream about you. When I think about my future, you’re in it.”

When you least expected love, it found you.

The very first book starts in a way that we immediately know that something happened that tore up and pushed them apart, going them to show us in a intricate and captivating way their love story from the very first moment they locked eyes. It’s a slow burn, but a deliciously realistic and close to heart way. Their blooming romance made me fall in love right along with them. So on On The Way Down, we see them fall in love, and get together, in a beautiful Holywood ‘Cinderella’ like scheme, that is very much my catnip. This fairytale though, is shaken to the core when tragedy, by the end of book one, strikes in the most heartbreaking of manners ( I SOBBED LIKE A BABY, AND I SELDOM CRY IN MY READS!), and their relationship is put to the test in every way.

I’d do whatever it took to remind her of the thing I knew to be true above all else. We belonged together.

That’s where we start on book two, On The Way Back. The title was absolutely SPOT ON! The second book truly was all about recovering and dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy, and most of all HEALING! OMG… The emotional charge, the conflict, the pain, the desperation, I felt every single one of those emotions along with Shae and Garrett. My heart was literally hurting for these two, so damn much! The issues discussed are so close to everyone’s heart in one way or another, I very much doubt this duet can be read without absorving and LIVING those emotions, right along with them. That’s how brilliant and masterfully Ella Fox wove them!

Ms. Fox crafted the very definition of the PERFECT romance hero, ultimate book boyfriend and my favorite EF male character – and I thought Mateo Cruz would hold that title forever, lol – in Garrett Riordan. He is EVERYTHING I want and search in my romance novels, and then some! Perfect in every way, his undying, unshakeable love and devotion thought this struggling and desperate journey was the stuff that fairytales – and romance books – are made of. Truly perfect!

The other was my heart, and I’d never give up on her—on us. Quitting wasn’t an option. I would fight for Shaelyn until the stars fell from the sky and my bones turned to dust.

“I gave you my whole heart, Shaelyn—not just a portion of it. It’s been yours this whole time because it’s constant.

Right now, in this very moment, my heart continues to be yours. It’ll be yours in five years, and it will still be yours thirty years after that. This love is not temporary. It will not decrease in scope or go away.

And Shaelyn… Oh my heart… Even though she’s so young when they first meet, she indeed was an old soul in young body, mainly due to her sad past. She was created in such a realistic and natural way, that I couldn’t help but relate to her, I was literally cheering from her from the get go, and when the tragedy hits them, I was hurting so damn much for her. Not all was heartbreaking, and each victory I felt in my heart just as much. I really was living all the emotions trough her and that is the proof of how masterful the story telling is in this duet!

WHAT AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY! I can honestly say I will never forget this story, these two, and specially their unwavering love! The Retake Duet will go straight to my list of top all time fav, EPIC LOVE STORY, romance novels. Yep, it’s right there in my list of literary masterpieces!!! The definition of a MUST READ! NOW! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

My heart was made to beat along with yours. Until the day I die, it’ll be you. I love you so goddamn much, Shaelyn.

“Thank you for never losing faith.”
“Not even for a second,” he vowed. “This marriage is forever.”
“And always,”

4.5 Fantastic Stars!
Review by Lisa Kane

Shaelyn Monroe has the mother from hell. Jewel is selfish, dangerous and just a nasty vile person! But seventeen year old Shaelyn has no choice but to get her high school diploma, turn eighteen and get out of dodge. Her mom works in LA doing make up for movie and TV productions. Shaelyn is tutored on the set of the movie and spends most of her time reading books. She tries to stay away from drama and under the radar. But the movie's star, Garrett Riordan, former child star and now one of Hollywood's biggest box office attractions, seems to have taken notice of her. He's 26, gorgeous and a really great person.

He was hot, but not my jam. His dark brown hair, deep chocolate-colored eyes, and perfect lips were all nice, but they didn't light my fire.

Sounds like she's noticed all the little details on Garrett.

Shaelyn can't figure out why Garrett keeps trying to have a conversation with her. He's respectful but interested in her life. The few times they've talked they've discovered their mutually obsession with music. They can almost finish each other's sentences. Yin and Yang.

When circumstances throw and opportunity for Shaelyn to earn money by becoming Garrett's assistant they only grow closer. The difference in their ages is all too obvious but is it enough to keep them apart?

I see us as a marathon and not a sprint.

This book broke my heart...especially at the end. Both characters are so genuine and in love with each other. They face so many obstacles. But their love, that is the constant. This is the first of the duet so you know there's going to be a cliffy ending...come on January!

I'd do whatever it took to remind her of what I'd known all along-we belonged together.

OMG is what I said when I finished this book. First I have to say holy shiz because that ending Lord help me the ending had to be a cliff hanger for the next book but man oh man I could not believe it ended where it did. I kept checking my kindle to make sure I wasn't missing anything but nope it ended and now I need book two like yesterday.

Shaelyn is a 17 year old movie star. She loves acting as it takes her away from her family life. She comes from an abusive mother whose words cut like a knife. She can cut down her daughter with a mere few words. Shaelyn loves going to school because it is an escape for her from her mother. She also loves to be around her grandmother. Her grandmother was more of a mother to her than her own mother and Shaelyn loved that.

Then Shaelyn takes a movie role in Utah which means she will spend her senior year working instead of going to school. So she studies on set when she meets Garrett. Garrett is making the movie and he falls head over heals in love with Shaelyn the minute he sees her. He does everything in his power to see her and when he realizes her mother is abusive he tries to help her out.

Then one night Shaelyn's mother goes to far and hurts her and Garrett steps in and takes care of Shaelyn. This is where the story gets so good. You see the love they have for each other even though there is an age difference it does not matter and they try and make it work. But with all good things in love there is always a monkey wrench thrown in there and Shaelyn and Garrett will have to fight for their love. Can they do it? Will they have a HEA? I hope so!! I need book two right now!!

3.5 ⭐️

Prologue begins in 2001. The heroine is divorcing the hero - he’s trying to contest the divorce, claiming they are meant to be together forever, he’s crazy in love w/ her, he’ll leave his job. She says “fate” doesn’t want them to be together.

Book goes back to 1998 when the H and h first meet.

Safety: Safe, NO OP.

I nodded my understanding, but still, suspicion niggled at me. “Is she—um, your normal type?”
He gave me a wry look. “If you’re asking if my previous partners all looked like stacked Barbie dolls, the answer is no. I’ll always be honest with you, Shaelyn. I’m twenty-six years old and I wasn’t a choirboy for the last decade. There have been a lot of women but not one of them were ever serious enough to be called a girlfriend or take home to my parents. In that regard, I was a virgin until tonight.”
🙄🙄🙄 mate relax about “I was virgin until tonight”, but I can appreciate the sentiment.

Scene context: Heroine is a virgin. She’s 17, he is 26. She’s asking about an actress he lost his virginity at 16.

Typically, an ex manwhore is not my thing, I’ll avoid hard, which I can assume is what he is signalling here. But that little quote comes at 80% and is the only indication of his past he ever gives the readers. Plus he proven his loyalty tenfold by this point.

In the sex scenes - his “my little virgin” and small teaching moments were overkill.

Plot:
The heroine catches his eye on set since he’s a blockbuster movie star. He pursues her friendship. There’s a forbidden level of attraction there. Her mother is in the film industry, a struggling personality who is both verbally and physically abusive to the h.

h is beyond mature for her years. Normally, I’d be put off by this plotline - if not his career, then the age gap and specifically her age. But he adamantly doesn’t clue her into the changing nature of their relationship and knows he must wait. He does drop hints that she’s become v important to him in a romantic way. Still think it’s odd a 17 year old took his fancy, but their personalities click in a way that age is their only barrier. He waits until she’s 18, and makes way to get her away from her mum, keep her safe, give her all her dreams. He makes everything good for her and is patient (a quality I love) whilst mastering the pursuit!

Ending resumes at the prologue where they have divorced due to a stillborn child. H plans to win back his wife. I need to see what happens in book 2.

Shaelyn is a mature 17-year-old when she catches the eye of Garrett Riordan, famous movie star. Although young, she has lived a lifetime more than most people twice her age and it's this quiet maturity that's part of what draws him to her. Shaelyn's not impressed by Garrett's fame or money, and he likes that about her. But, even though he has developed feelings for the mature beyond her years young woman, he never acts upon them until she turns 18. It's when Shaelyn turns to him for comfort after a particularly bad event, though, that their relationship takes a turn.

Garrett and Shaelyn's relationship is intense and fairy tale-like in its passion. And I was cringing the whole time because I knew that things couldn't possibly be this perfect even though they loved each other so passionately and had developed those feelings in a relatively short amount of time. And when things imploded, I was crying Dean Winchester-style because it was brutal. I absolutely cannot wait for On the Way Back because these two have a love for the ages and I need to know how Ella plans on fixing the mess she left this couple in!

Wow. This book was so emotional. I felt the heroines pain like it was my own from page 1. Not even knowing why she felt this pain. I didn't for one second want to put this book down. I love how Garrett was all about her from the first moment.

Do love and sacrifice go together like pain and suffering or is it simply one equals the other?

The marriage is over, the ink is drying but the love still consumes her heart and soul.

Sound and word, ears and eyes combine together to cement a solid foundation between the star and the girl who had no choice.

A pessimistic heart, an age too young, torture and pleasure entwined together.

A road travelled, long and harsh, unwanted and alone. The future full of promise and freedom.

Thrust into stardom so young, eyes of the world upon him. Loving yet judging.

Garrett so bright and beautiful like a star in the night sky. All can see, but only a select few see closely.

Shaelyn as unique as her name, a wallflower who dazzles in the corner, waiting for her time to shine.

A true love story from start to finish. Beautiful, rich in love and emotion, with a tang of "why?" in the undertones.

Characters that shine in your mind, and sing in your heart. Gooey warm feelings of love and warmth.

Now give me the next part I need more!!

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

I went into this one blind, and boy was I was blind-sided. Shae has a horrible home life, her mother is a terrible, terrible person, and she cannot wait to get away from her and have her own freedom as soon as she turns 18. Without the buffer of her Grandmother around, her mother is even worse of a person towards her.

Working the movie production set, Jewel drags Shae along and whilst she keeps to herself, quietly reading and listening to music, Shae still catches the eye of Garrett, the babe of a man who has the lead role in the movie they're shooting.

Garrett is so damned adorable its not funny. He is super respectful to Shae, and just coasts along and is there for her, and gives her more chances to get away from her Mum. No-one realises how bad Jewel is though, and when things take a turn for the worse right before Shae turns 18, everything changes. Garrett goes into protective mode and everything progresses from there.

I enjoyed watching these two get to know each other and to love each other. Garrett and his respectful personality are a hugely important part of this storyline, and I love how he was written. He truly cares for Shae, and doesn't want to do anything to ruin this.

Of course, after she turns 18 and they start further exploring their relationship and what they are to each other, things quickly progress, and I'm still sitting there wondering how the hell things turned the way they had in the prologue. Suddenly everything is happening and then there is this huge cliffhanger and now I'm just like...GIVE. ME. BOOK. TWO. RIGHT. NOW.

Can't wait to see where book 2 goes!

Loved everything about this book. How Garrett is with Shaelyns. You felt the love he has for her come off the pages in droves. The last few chapters broke my heart. It’s going to be a long wait till January.
Hope you all enjoy this book as much as I have. Thanks.

The author asked that the couple's issue not be revealed, I don't fully agree that the author should dictate what the reader should express but I digress.

The blurb sounded so good, I dove in with enthusiasm and the first chapter is really good. The couple divorces, and the h states that she blew up her own life so I'm excited to know what happened.

And then.....frustration

h is 17, mom is a makeup artist on movie set, dating the producer; single mom who blames h for ruining her life by being born. h is strong, counting the days until she can leave mom, meets H, he's 26, child actor who has finally found success. He courts her through friendship because he respects the legalities and limits of her age. She becomes his assistant, they gel over music, he never expresses his feelings. Her mom beats her up, she calls him, police, hospital, then she's living with him. It literally just jumps, she's 17 without any sort of identity, so naturally she becomes a script reader, mom goes to jail, she gives her virginity, and just becomes this whole other person. I know that was a run on sentence, this book drove me crazy, I just kept thinking there is going to be something to save this plot, nope, she gets anxiety because she doesn't like the spot light AND then there is actually an Oprah interview, this was just ridiculousness. Pregnant, loses baby at 8 months, cliffy......

There isn't a love connection, she's a child, she doesn't know anything about herself, I'm beyond disappointed and will not read the next book.

Reread. I couldn't help but felt heartbroken from the first chapter. And then the author took we back to where the story began. H was such a sweetheart that he respected h while protected her in every way possible. And felt so deeply for him in the end of this book.

Well, I have to say I really enjoyed reading this book and after that ending, I'm eager to read the next book as it's a duet series and I want to know what happens next! I was a bit confused in the beginning of the book but after the first chapter I felt like the author opened up the story and it made sense then to me where it was going. There are some surprises that I didn't see coming though. I'm ready for the second book!

Shaelyn lives with her mom and tries to do everything she can to finish school early. When she meets Garret there's something between them that makes her feel alive but nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors and it makes it harder for her to feel any hope that things could be different. But sometimes friends can make a difference and when something happens, it'll become clear to both of them that they can't push feelings aside. But will it be enough to stand the test of time and a tragedy to overcome?...

Shaelyn has endured a childhood that has not been easy, and she is just biding her time until she can break free, but she never imagined how her life was about to change.

Garrett is a famous actor and he is eight years older than Shaelyn. From the moment he met her he knows that they are meant to be. In the meantime, he will be patient and support her in whatever she needs or wants.

An epic love exists between the two but instead of the happy ever after they should be having their future is torn apart. Will they be able to put it back together?

I loved these two together. He is so supportive and protective of her while she sees the real man and not the celebrity. Full of emotion and angst this story ends on a cliff hanger that leaves you wanting much more of Shaelyn and Garrett. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Younger female/older male -- but with a rational and relatable storyline included in a believable love story. I really enjoyed this first book in what is to be a duet and, for the most part, the characters. It read somewhat like a Hollywood soap opera at times. There is, of course, a ton of angst built into the story -- an abusive mother you'll want to strangle is at the root of all evil.

Be aware that a happily ever after isn't meant to be -- at least in the first book. It ends on a sad and emotional cliffhanger. But I have hope that somebody's going to do his best to bring back the sunshine in this relationship.

Hopefully, the author won't keep us waiting too much longer for the finale!

Is it January yet? I could not put down this book! On the Way Down was yet another great book by Ella Fox. Shae and Garrett's story is the biggest emotional rollercoaster imaginable. If ever two people were meant to meet, it was these two.

Shaelyn is living in a nightmare that her out of control mother is running. She is simply trying to cope with her until she can graduate. Enter Garrett Riordan, actor, hottie, and Shae's newest friend. They meet when her mother is doing makeup for a movie he's filming with. The two of them are two stars aligned and the chemistry is off the charts. But she's 17 and so he must bide his time and just be her friend. When her relationship with her mother spins out of control, will he be willing to help her pick up the pieces? Will he want her for more than a friend? OMG, this book sucked me in. When it ended, I was left with my mouth hanging open and counting down the days until book 2.

On The Way Down is simply wonderful! Ella Fox is an extraordinary writer and makes you feel every emotion along with her characters. The prologue dragged me in and the words kept me in every page.

Shae has had a rough road growing up with a single mom that loves to reminder her what a burden she is. She is counting the days until she's 18 and can leave the life she feels trapped in. She meets Garrett Riordan and her world begins to change in ways she never dreamed of. They just fit together perfectly, despite that fact that he is a famous actor and older than her. He is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her in his life. Will the love the found in each other be enough to weather a storm that no couple should ever face? Their story is far from over. I can't wait for the next book!

WOW

What does one even say after reading a book like this, other than WOW! Ella Fox has taken me through every emotion known to man with this one story, and this is only the first half of it....sheesh!

Garrett and Shae have a love that shines so bright it's blinding. The struggles that they have had to overcome and are still dealing with would bring a weaker couple to their knees. It seems like it now but I have every faith that they will conquer their obstacles and their pain. Ella Fox has written a heartbreakingly beautiful story of love, hope, and strength.

There are very few authors that can make you feel so much with one story and Ella Fox is in that select few. She has written characters in Garrett and Shae that you wish you could pull from the pages and wrap them in your arms and try to protect them from anything amd anyone that tries to deny their love. Characters that you love and want to physically protect from life challenges, even though they probably don't need you to. January cannot come fast enough!

Thank you Thank you Ella Fox for this beautiful book!

Beautiful, and heartbreaking. This is my favorite book this year! Garrett is a 26 year old man that has been in the movie spotlight for years. Shaelyn is a 17 year old who is only around a movie set due to her mother doing hair and makeup. When Garrett sees Shaelyn he feels drawn to her but when he finds out her age he knows he needs to stay away. This book captivated me from beginning until the end. I didn’t put it down. I fell in love love with them. I can’t wait for the conclusion to their story!

4,5 cliffy stars, It is obvious that the author gave her soul to this book. Writing style is perfect, characters well developed and narration is well done. 9 years difference is totally ok. Can't wait to read the second and (hopefully?) the last book in this Series.
