Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning, is a highly suspenseful historical romance from the heyday of slavery in America. It’s the story of a fiery young woman from Boston, Permelia Shaw, who loses the love of her life and goes south to forget about him, only to be swept up in a new romance in Virginia.
Though she is an abolitionist, she thinks she can enjoy a life of wealth and leisure in this society built on bondage as long as she remains true to her conscience and treats the slaves as fellow human beings. That’s not easy to do in 1830’s Virginia, but she defies the norms and builds rapport with a few slaves.
Montgomery Randall is a British slave-trader who escaped from England to avoid the abolition of slavery. He resumes his lifestyle in the rich farmland of slaveholding Virginia. This puts him within the orbit of the Nor’easter, Meli.
Will Virginia society and the slave-trader who lusts for her accept her flouting of their way of life or will they break her will?
Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a historical romance that has a bit of unpredictability to the clever, multi-layered storyline- there is suspense, new beginnings, drama, secrets, tension, emotion, some upsetting scenes, and many surprising developments. Permelia Shaw’s world turns upside down when she loses the love of her life. She decides to move south so she can start fresh, so she leaves Boston and heads to Virginia. Now this is a big step for her, because she is a staunch abolitionist, and even though she lives a wealthy lifestyle, she can’t see eye to eye with the southern way of life where slavery is very much the norm. Montgomery Randall is a slave trader who had fled England because of the abolition of slavery- settling in Virginia in order to continue his ‘lifestyle’. There he meets Permelia (Meli) and sets his sights on her immediately- he has to have her! These two have such opposing viewpoints- is there any way that they can find a common ground, or compromise? Will Meli be able to maintain her stand, or will Montgomery and southern society break her down? Anytime a new book of Ms. Zello’s pops up on my feed, it’s an instant ‘one-click’ for me. I know anything she writes is going to be something I will enjoy. I might have high expectations, but she hasn’t let me down yet! As I started reading I realised that this book is a little different from the other books of Ms. Zello’s that I have read- but no less captivating. The story was unique and gives us lots of complex and intriguing characters and situations. The way she blended the historical elements with suspense, tension, turmoil, romance, and drama, was done exceedingly well- entirely realistic and believable. I definitely wasn’t expecting the storyline to evolve the way it did, that’s for sure! It’s easy to see that she put a lot of thought, planning, heart, and soul into the development of this book. I am definitely looking forward to her next book!
ABOLITIONIST: ab·o·li·tion·ist (noun) a person who favors the abolition of a practice or institution, especially capital punishment or (formerly) slavery.
BEHIND THE MANOR DOOR LIES THE RECKONING is a book about Meli who is a northern bred woman relocated to the South where slavery is still legal. She is an abolitionist, so this goes against her beliefs - yet there is a hypocritical side to this because Meli also enjoys the finer things that wealth (from slavery in this case) brings.
I'm not a fan of historical romance because it typically (for me) tries to romanticize the events of the time frame. I felt like the author did a good job in this story of keeping it balanced and while it is a romance, didn't romance the conflict. The reason I picked it up to read is because the protagonist is from Boston (yay Boston) .
The characters are well defined and developed in this story and while it is a slightly shorter story at 200(ish) pages, it has a depth and weight of a larger book. There is much to be said for holding on to ones values while "bucking the system".
If you were to update the time frame that this book is set in and mention some modern conveniences, this book and it's "political statements" could be set in today.
Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a five star novel. I absolutely love historical fiction. I feel like it is a much more interesting way to learn about history than any other method! When we first meet Montgomery, all I can think about is how much of a jerk he is. Then I try to remind myself that he is probably a typical man for this time period. He lives in England, but also knows his time there is coming to an end. With two kids and a deceased wife, he knows he needs to be able to make money and his way is in the slave trade. Moving to America will give him another chance to continue his business and own slaves as well since England has now abolished it. On the other hand, we also meet a spunky young woman who, I can only believe, wishes she lived in a different time. She does not fit well into her time period where a woman is only to be a wife and a mother and not have their own opinions. When she unexpectedly loses the man that she loves, she knows she needs a change and decides to move to Virginia with her sister. Her opposing views of slavery do not mesh well with the Virginians but she catches the eye of Monty and he can’t seem to possibly let her go. He will do whatever it takes to wed her and make her see how slavery is the right way to go but he does not realize how strong-willed she is and how much of an abolitionist she is.
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning was a good 4 star read.
We get several POV’s which I like because it lets us know what the characters are feeling and thinking.
When Permelia tells the one she has fallen for how she feels, he tells her he doesn’t feel the same. Devastated she goes to stay with her sister. This is where she meets Montgomery.
Montgomery is a man that I had a hard time liking for several reasons. He has been widowed with two young children and is looking for a new wife. He is a slave owner who has decided to move to the US from England to be able to keep his business in slave trading.
When he meets Permelia he is drawn in by her. Permelia is trying to get past her broken heart and when she meets Montgomery she thinks he might have potential. Only problem is she doesn’t support slavery.
Can these two get past their different views and have something?
It’s been awhile since I have read a historical romance and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this read. I was pulled right in and couldn’t wait to see if Permelia got her HEA. I really liked all of the secondary characters they added a great element to the story. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
I have read several of Debbie Zello’s novels in the past. So, I went into this one blind knowing that it would be a good book regardless of what it was about. I was a bit surprised at the difference in Zello’s writing that I have previously read and this novel. It was clear from the get go that this was a passionate project of hers. With that said, the historical part of the novel kind of threw me off a bit. It was just not my favorite of hers but still a solid four star read with, exceptional characters, details, and plot.
Permelia, more often referred to as Meli, is a boisterous abolitionist. She is firm in her beliefs and is determined to make a difference wherever she can. When the love of her life is ripped from this world she knows she needs a fresh new start somewhere else. She makes the journey from Boston to Virginia. Being a southern state rife with slavery, her beliefs and ideals are not welcome.
It is here that we meet Montgomery Randall. Montgomery is a slave trader, everything Melia detests, this man supports and participates in. Problem is Montgomery is head over heels for Melia from the very first moment he laid eyes on her. These two could not be any more opposite in just about every way possible. Will the southern views and Montgomery break Melia’s resolve for her beliefs? Is there ever a chance that these two could be successful together?
There were several moments in this novel that really shocked me. Many times things went in a direction that I never thought they would. This kept me engaged even through my moments where I was angry with the plot and angry with certain characters. I felt it did a great job of keeping me on the edge of my seat pretty much 75% of the novel. If historical reads are your thing you will be very pleased that you picked up this gem from Debbie Zello.
I give Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello, 5 stars.
Permelia Shaw is a young girl from the New England states in the early 1800s. Carefree and outspoken, she suffers being a woman in that era. After having her heart broken, she decides to move to Virginia to live with her sister. It is even harder for her since she is so against slavery. There she meets a man who quickly steals her heart. She feels this is someone she could build a life with. Little does she know just what she is in for.
Montgomery Shaw believes in slavery, he even makes his money in slave trading while living in England. Refusing to give up his slaves and lifestyle, he is forced to move to Virginia in America. There he continues just like he has, by ruling his slaves with and iron hand and getting everything he wants. When he sees Permelia, he know he has to have this young lady as his. He will make her believe what he wants until he owns her, too.
Will they be able to compromise on their beliefs? Will Permelia be happy again?
This is a very emotional book. Not only do you have the feeling of a girl who quickly grows into a young woman, but you have everything about slavery and the life of women in that era. This book covers everything so well, it felt like I was back there in that time. Permelia is a wonderful main character and you really see her growth throughout the story. Montgomery is someone you will love to hate. I cannot say I understood him, but I can see him fitting right in with some of the beliefs of that time. Not to mention the story itself will sweep you away as you see the love, the sacrifices, and the sorrow of the people in this story and what they do to survive.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction, but be prepared to go on a rollercoaster of emotions.
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello. Usually historical romance isn’t my cup of tea, but I found myself drawn in from page one. The author takes great pride in the details of this story. Which you can clearly see as you are transported back in time and watch is all come alive before your eyes. Readers are taken on an emotional journey with characters that are complex and amazingly written. You watch each character grow at the story progresses and it’s great to see. The storyline is well thought out and written well. Never feeling rushed or lacking anything. Each character brings something different to the story and without each one the story wouldn’t as whole. You watch each character grow while you read and that’s one of my favorite parts. This story keeps you guessing at times with its twist and turns. I’m giving this book a four star review and highly recommend it to everyone even if you’re not a historical fiction fan. This one might just change your mind.
Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning by Debbie Zello 4 out of 5 Stars This historical romance is seriously full of suspense. I had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Having said that, I did read this book in one sitting. I highly enjoyed this book. Historical romances are my jam and I loved the accuracies of this book. I will pick apart a book if the author is incorrect with the references, timelines and historical people. With that in mind, this author did a fantastic job in keeping with the historical notes of the time period of the book, but at the same time, personalizing the story to the characters in the book. I feel that if I go into too much detail about the book, I will give it away because I very much enjoyed this book. I applaud the author for finding the balance between history and imagination!

Stars: 4
This isn't the first book by Debbie Zello that I have read so I was excited to see how this story played out. I have to admit I was so scared I was going to hate this book after I read chapter one. However, I am glad to report that I definitely liked this book. I liked Meli. She was brave and unafraid to be herself. Though life threw hard balls at her, she still cared so much for others. I am glad to say that this book does have a HEA. I would like to warn that there may be some traumatizing scenes for some people.
Overall, I feel that Debbie Zello did a fantastic job at making us fall in love with her characters and making us hate the antagonist. I really have enjoyed all the books that I have read from this author and can't wait to see what she comes up with next!
Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning by Debbie Zello 4 Stars!!!!
I absolutely love this period in American history. This book had me absolutely smitten from page one. I like how the author handles the very delicate subject of slavery and shows the multitude of different outlooks on it that were at that time. I found myself glued to the pages to see ho the story would turn out and how the characters would fair.
I really was rooting for Meli as her stance being anti slavery. I could feel the termoil in her relationship with Monty and how it was totally against all her beliefs. I just couldnt see her with him and had to keep reading to see how this would fair. I like how the author was able to keep me at bated breath as to Meli and if she would get what her heart really desired. I also found the authors style to be quite unique and refreshing and I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future and I know I will be reading this book over and over again as I do.
I don’t read a lot of historical romances, they’re usually hard for me to get into but I’ve read a few of Debbie Zello’s books and I was really curious to see what she does with the genre. I am honestly pleased I gave Behind The Manor Door Lies The Reckoning a chance. With characters you love and those you absolutely love to hate, this book kept me interested from start to finish. From the very first time we are introduced to Monty I dislike him, yet I’m drawn to his character from the get go. I always appreciate when women are written as strong and independent and I really liked how Meli was written. Once again Debbie Zello didn’t disappoint, I look forward to reading more from this author!
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning By: Debbie Zello 5 out of 5 stars
The story Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a historical romance book. It is a book I enjoyed reading. It is the story of Permelia Shaw or Meli as she is called. Meli is a young woman who is a beautiful, strong-willed, and defiant. She doesn’t believe in owning others and this way of thinking is at odds with those in the community. She is a kind, compassionate and generous young woman. She loves to help others better their situation in life. She finds herself in Virginia and has been noticed by Montgomery Randall. He is a British slave-trader who is very wealthy. Montgomery is a man that at times seems to be cold/dark and others to be quite the charmer. What does the future hold for Meli and Montgomery? There are parts of this story that had me upset at how some of the characters are treated. I applaud the author for her realistic writing of the time period. The story is set back in the time of slavery and it made many rich. Reading about this time made me think of how many were mistreated and even if they were considered “free” it didn’t always mean that they were equal. It is books like this that make me remember the past and how things should never be allowed to return to the way they were. There are many other characters that are introduced in this story that I loved reading about and their interactions with Meli. Once I started reading this story I found that I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the final page. This is a well-written book that has many wonderful characters. I would highly recommend reading it.
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning By Debbie Zello ☆☆☆☆☆ This is a suspenseful historical romance, with plenty of twists. This book is a standalone.

Having her heart broken, she decides to go visit her sister and get out of town. She is moving on and trying to make her own happiness. During her time slavery is common, but not for her or her family.
Montgomery Randall is a slave trader, making his money on the lives of others. He is a widower with 2 young children, after his wife dies days after giving birth. His looks and money make him look so charming. He is not only slimy he is evil. But he has his eye on a new young lady. Can he get the prize, or will she change his ways?
Debbie Zello has really impressed me with her story telling. I normally stay away from historical stories altogether. But this one caught my interest. It is a true love, hate story. In fact I just wanted to see the good win over evil. I have read other stories by Debbie Zello and she has never disappointed. I am looking forward to her next book. Well done Debbie Zello!

I chose this book because I'm a huge Debbie Zello fan and love her books. Historical is just not my normal genre and have a hard time getting into stories like this. In saying that, after reading this one which I sincerely enjoyed, I'm still not a big fan of this genre but I am an even bigger fan of this author. She did an amazing job with this story, I loved the characters and the storyline was fantastic. I love strong female leads and Meli was definitely that. The twists and turns were placed perfectly and had me on the edge of my seat and I read this in one sitting.
I highly recommend anything this author writes and if Historical Fiction is something you really like then you will really love this book.
I don't really read alot of historical romance novel's but I'm once again pleased i did this one didn't disappoint. There was plenty of suspense and twist and turns along the way to keep you hooked and wanting more when you reach the end. I found myself able to visualise everything it was written so beautifully there was some moments in the book that were upsetring and it's safe to say it toyed with my emotions they were up and down! I highly recommend this novel once you start it you certainly won't be able to set it down til the end.
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a historic fiction novel. While, I generally don't read historical fiction novels, I really found myself intrigued by this one. I have been recently studying the time period where slavery was happening in America and its interesting to think about being an abolitionist in that time period, especially as a woman. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the characters. I like this author and will definitely continue to read her books. I give this book a solid 4 stars.
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a great example of a historical romance. Set in a time where everything was different and slavery was rife. Having lost her love Permelia uproots her whole life from Boston to Virginia. While being a strict abolitionist she still lives the wealthy lifestyle she was used to. But it is ok as long as she treats the slaves like people, surely? Determined to follow her view she befriends some of the slaves and starts to build on these relationships. And then she meets Montgomery. He is firmly a slave trader – so much so he fled England in order to keep this lifestyle going. When the two meet he knows he wants her instantly. But their lives, and their views, are so different is surely can’t work between them. But in the 1830’s it might be that Permelia doesn’t have much of a choice. Can she hold on to her views? Or will society break her down? This was a brilliant book. Set in a time when the slave trade was the backbone of America it was great to see it told from the perspective of someone who doesn’t agree with it. Being the minority view on the matter won’t have been easy back then and the author dealt with the subject very well, going into the right amount of detail. She was still able to provide great characters with a good depth to them. I have only read a couple of other books by this author but I will be certainly reading more.
Behind The Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello. This is a story of a lady named Permelia Shaw set in the 1830's in Virginia. Permelia is against slavery but still wants to be a rich society lady. Seeing that she's not going to get away from slavery she decides if she just treats them like humans it will be fine. She's coming out of a bad romance which is the reason she flees to Virginia. She meets Montgomery Randall a British Slave Trader. He's taken with Permelia but will she allow herself to fall in love with a Slaver trader? This book is full of history and romance. Great read!
I’m not usually one for historical romance, but this story kept me entertained. The author has created a villain that is complex and that is one of the main reasons this book keeps you hooked. His ability to switch between the public façade and his true nature is seamless. I tried to think of ways to describe my feelings about this antagonist, and couldn’t decide between abhor, disdain, and loathe. Whichever one conveys the most feeling, that’s how I felt about Monty. You almost have to keep reading the book to find out whether he ends up having a reformation or whether he finally gets the comeuppance he seems to deserve.
I love that Meli, the female lead, is a brave woman who uses her feminine abilities in her favor. In a time where women were not considered intelligent or important, Meli stands out by not allowing herself to be deterred by danger or confrontation.
The story opens in England where you meet Monty, a recent widower, and businessman who is trying to make a life altering decision for his future. You are then introduced to Permelia (Meli), who is a not satisfied with her station as a female in a male dominated world. When Monty realizes his way of life is quickly coming to an end, he sets out on adventure to America. Meli, who is coming into adulthood, is suffering from her first heartbreak and has taken refuge with her sister in Virginia. When Meli and Monty meet, the future begins to cement as they spend more and more time with each other. Unfortunately, Monty is not willing to give up the idea of having slaves, and Meli is diametrically opposed to owning people. As their relationship progresses, Monty’s secrets begin to unravel. His strange behavior and rules cause the rebellious Meli to go digging and she unleashes a force she could never have imagined.
Amazing story. The descriptions of the plantation, emotions and atrocities is outstanding, jumping off the page. I read this book in one day, that's how good it is.
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a historical romance story and tells us of a period in time about slavery set in America. I enjoyed the history of the story but found the slavery and treatment appalling but I know this is what happened back then. Debbie evoked some pretty powerful emotions in me as I read along, page after page, unable to stop to put it down. The story felt very realistic I was really invested in every outcome. I loved Meli, our strong willed lead who was continually beaten down but was able to slowly build herself up and stand up for and protect those she had come to love, no matter their race or colour. This is a very powerful story that should be read by all.
The one thing I continue to enjoy with this author is her ability to create a story that is engaging and flowing and this one is no different. The twists and turns left me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen on the next page. This story takes places during a time of slavery where things are different then they are today. Her attention to details made me feel as if I was right there. Historical romance with a twist of mystery, I highly recommend this book.
I love historical fiction and historical romances. And this one did not disappoint. Just the right amount of suspense and romance and intrigue. The plot had a great pace and the characters were rich and full. I was emotionally invested from the first page and looked forward to reading more. I didn’t want this story to end. Continue to thoroughly enjoy the books from this author.

Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning by Debbie Zello is an incredible romance read! This was actually my first historical romance read but it won’t be my last as this author has left a great lasting impression. I’ve never read a book by this author that I didn’t love but this one is by far my favorite! I was so captivated by the storyline that I ended up reading it in one sitting as I couldn’t bring myself to put it down, plus all of the detail made it so easy for me to picture everything playing out in my mind.
I absolutely loved Meli’s character from start to finish. She was a feisty, honest and brilliant woman who believed in justice. She’s a fictional character that I would love to be able to meet! She was so inspirational and I’m so glad that I was able to read her story!
This was an unforgettable romance read, one that I would recommend to anyone looking for their next read!
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning. By Debbie Zello 5 stars
I love historical romance stories, they are my absolute favourite to read however this one was a little different to what I am used to. First being that it was set in American during the slavery period, where I am used to reading English historical romances with Lords, Ladies and usually a few scoundrels so I was really looking forward to something a little different and I really enjoyed it. It was really well written and I didn’t put the book down until I had finished. I enjoyed the historical part to the story too and felt like I learnt something. Whilst as I’m not familiar with this period in history I’m not sure whether the story was factually correct but it sure felt like it to me. The story had a realistic feel to it and I was really invested as a reader in Meli and Montgomery. I really liked Meli, I thought she was a strong willed female lead, she knows what she wants and believe and isn’t afraid to stand up for them. Overall a really enjoyable read – definitely one for lovers of historical romance!
Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning is a historical romance with the scenery of slavery times. I have only read a few historical stories and what I like is that Debbie Zello does an amazing job to keep the story in the time frame of the slavery. Her characters are fully developed, and I found myself on the journey with Permelia Shaw. She has been through some hard times, but it appears that her life will become more adventurous when she finds herself in the state Virginia. There were some twists and turns shook the foundation of her heart. Can Permelia’s dream come true? WIll the slavery be too much for her?
Behind the Manor Door Lies The Reckoning By Debbie Zello
This isn’t the first book I have read by Debbie, and I have to say that I enjoyed this book as much as the other of her books I have read. Behind the Manor Lies The Reckoning is set in the 1800’s and centred around Permelia Shaw. This book is a historical romance novel, but also covers the troubling times of slavery. Permelia moves from Boston to Virginia to be with her sister after having her heart broken. Once arriving in Virginia, she meets Montgomery. The problem with this is they are both on different sides when it comes to slavery. Permelia doesn’t believe in it, Montgomery does. I have to say I both loved and hated Montgomery. What will Permelia do when she finds out that Montgomery fully believes in slavery? Will Permelia be able to change Montgomery’s mind about slavery?
5 Star Behind the Manor Door Lies the Reckoning by Debbie Zello is a Historical romance book. I love historical romance books.I truly enjoyed this book. There are a few twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happens next. This story takes place in a time slavery and things were just different. I've read other books by this author and I enjoyed this one just as much as the others. I highly recommend this Book and I can't wait to read more from this author.
