The Sunday Lunchers #5

The Broken Girl and the Hero

Rate this book
I've been broken. Physically, mentally, spiritually...broken. And I'm okay staying that way as long as no one breaks me ever again.

Or so I thought. But then Brent, the guy who rescued me and saw me at my worst, walks back into my life. He sees me, the real me and he doesn't seem to be going anywhere. But the last thing I want is for anyone to see me. And as part of me wants him to stay far away and leave me be, the other part wonders...what would it be like to be whole again? Could I be whole again?

-This book follows the story of a survivor of kidnapping and rape. There is no graphic content, but the book may not be suitable for all readers.

Good book; wasn’t disappointed.. 5 star. ⭐️

***• I’m just going to add the spoilers here•*****

So I have wanted to read this book for a while now because I wanted to know Audrey story. I am glad that I  got to read her story. Which was so different from the other four girls... like I think this book was a book five idk but anyways!

It sucks that her friend Molly didn’t believe anything that “Katie” at the time said about her dad. But what it was Molly is just like her father and wanted to get in denial ... I was glad that Audrey got out of her shale and became stronger than she truly was.

All it took was for Brent to come into her life again and give her that spark that she needed. I was also glad that she put Chris in his place. Because he almost ruin things for Brent, but Brent became a police officer, and Dylan became an investor... so I figure football wasn’t their calling. Not only that I was glad that In the end Dylan and Jenna finally got together. Because they wanted each other as much as Brent and Audrey each other.

I was glad that Audrey became stronger when her abuser (her ex-best friend father) came into her new home and tried to hurt her. In the end, I was glad she used her business degree to open up well more so to help those women who are a victim of abusive relationships, family members; ransoms, etc. I like stuff like that especially for women because it gives us women to protect ourselves from the evil of the world. That’s something I always wanted to do (boxing; martial arts, work out exercises) never know when you might need to kick somebody butt.

& I was glad that Audrey kicks Gary *** in the end. She needed to be happy; I also understood why she didn’t want to be called by Katie-Lynn, especially when he called her that name. Audrey was a way better name for her. I can’t stand men who prey on children yuck!!! For her friend to blame her at the age of thirteen saying she wanted to be raped by that man is just disgusting... I wanted to slap her ex-best friend, Molly.

-“...as if some hair and baggy clothes could stop me from seeing you.” - ... -‘Brent had seen me when I was at my lowest point in life, when I thought I’d never return to the land of the living. And yet instead of something broken, he saw strength?’

We finally get to read Audrey’s story. Very good story. I liked it. Some surprises pop up which kept my interest level.

4.5 stars. Audrey has been trough a really horrible experience, I don't know how you can really go on after that, but apparently she managed to find some inner strength and did it. Here we see her in her third year of healing and learning to cope with life. In spite of all the bad in her life, this book was not gloomy. True, it dealt with some very heavy issues, but this didn't soil everything in gloom and despair. Brent was wonderful - patient, kind, a true hero. I liked him a lot. And Dylan and Jenna were great friends. I was also happy for their inbuilt story. :)
So I wouldn't say the books in this series are romances. They are more like stories of healing for the girls in the Sunday Lunchers group, who fight their inner demons and learn to cope with life and difficult issues like bullying, abuse, eating disorders. And happily there is a wonderful ever after for each of them, finding a kind and descent guy who fights for them and lives them.
Religion: none
Narrative: 1st person, following Audrey
Sensuality: squeaky clean
Other morals: dealing with rape, stalking

I'm giving this powerhouse a straight up five star. This is the story I've been waiting for and it's as good and more than I hoped. Tragedy sunk this girl so down into herself that it took a long-ago hero to reenter her life. She started to wake up and become whom she was meant to be. Even with the reentry of her younger demon, she found the strength to overpower and be stronger. Favorite of the series right here.
It's strange to read about me in a book when it's not my own book. It's quite validating that I was not the only one. This message had to come from somewhere deep.

Audrey’s story

The author did a good job of giving us a glimpse of what Audrey went through without traumatizing us as well. Even without the details, I can’t imagine how a victim of rape and kidnapping could move on. I’m glad that she had her aunt and uncle and even cousin for support. Watching Audrey’s growth throughout and to take back her life- the pace was believable.

For an editing note: Cece’s name was misspelled throughout.

Wow

This book is one that I and many others can relate to I’m sure. Maybe not the extreme but somewhere close by. I love Audrey and her story. Her transformation was so great! Wish I had a cousin like Dylan. He was great and aunt Diane and uncle Buck! And definitely loving Brent!

This series was great and it is sad that so many people have eating disorders and the world thinks you have to look a certain way.

Beautiful

The care that the author took to make this girls mind come alive was unreal. I could feel everything she felt and was so empowered by her story. I wish more authors tackled this kind of trauma in their books. Would highly recommend this book to any woman or girl out there! Girl power!

I really liked learning Audrey's story. When I read Lacey's I found myself wondering about Audrey during the Sunday Lunchers. I'm glad I got to find out what happened to her. Also, Brent and Dylan sound so dreamy!!!!

Whew a rough but captivating book. Not much of a romance but the character development is amazing. Such a great overcoming obstacles story.

I received a free copy of this book to review. That being said I found the topic interesting and probably would have bought it.

The book deals with a young girl who has body dis morphia and an unhealthy relationship with food.

It's a short story so does not deal at length with the issues in depth but rather by telling the story as a year or so in the girls life. It deals with her relationships with friends and family and her decline into an eating disorder. Although the book details her experiences with a close friend and the competitive nature of the disorder as each tries to outdo the other with the least calories consumed culminating in a life changing event, I feel that it does not go into enough depth to convey the far reaching effects these disorders have on the individual, family and friends and how much of an effect it has.

The book seems light hearted and a little fairy tale in that everything works out in the end without much effort required, follow the steps to achieve. The girl in question doesn't seem to portray the long hard battle that I know it takes to overcome this type of disorder and therapy groups such as the ones she attends cannot 'fix' her mind and overcome the disorder in such a clean, neat and happy way that this is portrayed.

It seems like a light hearted look at such a disorder I would say but definitely one that would open a discussion.

Overall it was a well written story that I read in one sitting rather quickly. I was definitely left wanting more hoping that it would delve deeper instead of skimming the surface and providing a happy ever after.

I've read most of the rest of this series and found Audrey very intriguing so this was cool to read, to get her story, which is the opposite of most of the others' - gaining weight and dressing down because of what happened to her when she was slim and pretty.
