im impressed with how much AWZ has grown as an author with just one book.

although this story is still pretty tropetastic, they serve a purpose and are utilised well. i feel the characterisation has developed and i loved getting to know more in depth about some of the minor characters from the first book. and while i think the writing is still just okay, its easy to get through.

i also think this installment does better in terms of plot progression for the series as a whole. the first book does a great job at world-building and setting a foundation, but nothing in terms of plot was relevant to this book (except maybe the very end). so i like that i know exactly how the events in this book will play a part in the next.

overall, this is a very solid sequel that uses the building blocks from the first book and creates a detailed story. cant wait to see how it all plays out in the final book!

Ship ahoy! Finally my wait is over! I loved the first installment so much and I truly missed adorable and irresistible Ramson Quicktongue ! I wouldn’t imagine the second installment could be so much better! But it is! Actually it is marvelous and earned my blazing, sizzling, bloody, threatening, action packed five gazillion stars!

The first book ended with a cliffhanger promising us the real adventure just begins and it was just a warming session before something exciting and action packed comes out!

Ana Mikhailov’s true identity has been come to the light. She’s the only surviving member of royal family of Cyrilia and now vindictive soldiers who are loyal to Morganya are out to torture the non- affinities without serving justice properly to work for Morganya’s new established world order.

Ana should be teamed up with Ransom one more time to navigate the dangerous world of her homeland but Ransom conducts his own vengeance plan and he keeps this important information from her. They should cross the Whitewaves to reach the stone fronts of Bregon!

But the thing they don’t know is something darker is about to rise and threat their existence: something more powerful, dangerous, vindictive they can barely fight against or survive!

This new adventure was more heart throbbing, exciting with more mind games and twists gave me so much stomach churning and WTH moments! My heart is still pumping so fast! I feel so exhausted after ultra adrenaline rush! The final cliffhanger made me scream so hard: I WANT THE THIRD BOOK ASAP! I TRULY NEED IT!

Yes, give me more Ransom Quicktongue adventures pleaseeeee!!!

Sooo many many many thanks to Netgalley and Random House Children’s / Delacorte Press for sharing this amazing arc copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
You made my entire month!

“Some rulers’ reigns were forged with steel, some with gold, and some with might.
And mine, Ana thought, closing her eyes. Mine is forged by blood.”

This book starts a few weeks after the end of Blood Heir, where Ana’s true identity has been revealed, and she escaped death yet another time. Ana now needs to save her kingdom and help her people before Morganya destroys everything. The new evil Empress has her soldiers arresting, torturing, and killing non-affinites without real justice, all so she can crush any resistance to her rule and gain the support of the affinites who are seeking vengeance against the non-affinites who mistreated them for so many years.

Red Tigress follows Ana, Ramson, Linn, and Kaïs, their new ally, as they try to secure an alliance with Bregon, evade Morganya, gain the support of the Redcloaks, and outsmart Kerlan (all at the same time, of course). Time is of the essence for Ana, and she needs to make her move before Morganya has a chance to kill even more of her people and destroy the Cyrilian Empire.

I liked Blood Heir, and I knew there was potential for an even better sequel, so I was excited to read this book, and I was not disappointed! Red Tigress is full of action, plotting, and betrayal and the pace is much more enticing than it is in Blood Heir. The fact that we follow 4 characters now in this adventure also creates small cliffhangers at the end of some chapters, and once I got into this book, it was hard to stop reading. I love that we saw more of Linn in this book, I liked her character in the first book and I wanted more of her. She is determined and brave, and at the same time, she is still full of hope. I enjoyed getting to know her more intimately, and I hope that she will remain an important character in the last book of this trilogy.

“Where there was a window, there was a way out. Because no matter how many chains they wrapped around her, no matter how many locks they threw her behind, no matter how much her body was battered and bruised and broken, she would never forget who she was in her heart. I am shadows and wind. I am the invisible girl. I will fly.”

Ramson and Ana are similar to what we saw in Blood Heir, but their relationship gets a little more complex in this book, and it also feels more realistic since they’ve traveled together for a while now, compared to the kind of romantic feelings that suddenly developed at the end of the first book. I am eager to see what will happen between them in the next book, and I am glad that the rushed romance that was hinted at the end of the first book got slowed down in this book, a part of me was afraid that they would just declare their undying love for each other and start acting all stupid because they were so in love with each other...

Kaïs is a nice addition to the group. He is sweet and fierce, and he brings a balance to the more brutal and raw side of Linn, Ana, and Ramson. I hope to see more of him in the next book and to have more chapters from his POV.

“I will go wherever you will go. I pledge my swords to protect you, my shields to defend you.”

The plot is also more engaging. There are many unexpected twists and double crossings, it was hard to figure out what would happen, or who to trust, and I loved it! I was at the edge of my seat for the last third of the book, and I am not sure yet how I feel about this ending. It is sad, yet it does make sense so I can't be mad... The epilogue is also a big tease, it gives us a glimpse of the opposing forces that will battle against each other in the next book, and I am excited to see how this series will end.

This book is for you if… you can manage to deal with a littlebit of disappointment while still enjoying what Amélie has to offer.

Overall.
While many praised Amélie for improving a lot since gracing us with Blood Heir , she definitely didn't convince me. To be fair, my expectations were high. Red Tigress was supposed to be everything Blood Heir was missing, and although I loved the critical viewpoint towards colonialisation and human trafficking, it still didn't quite manage to keep me at the edge of my seat.

The story, in contrast to the themes it carries, does not contain a propper arc of suspense to the narrative in my opinion. And, frankly, I could have done away with one or two POVs less.

On the plus side, there is a lot of Angst going on and it's pretty much my favourite thing about young adult novels that involve romance. It's part cringy and part enticing and the concoction that results from this mix is more addictive than a decent piece of cake.

What’s happening.
‘We will not find fairness in this world. But it is up to us to take what we are given and to fight like hell to make it better.’

spoiler alert : And instead, the duo that is slowly broadening to a quintet, takes what they think serves to make their world a bit fairer.

Third time around and I liked this a lot better than the previous two times. I think I'm just enjoying this re-read adventure overall and super pumped to dive into the next book for the first time ever.
__________________________
Ever since I dove into Blood Heir I was honestly really excited to dive into this sequel, Red Tigress. Now I never read the updated version of the previous book because I just fell in love with the original. You know - that one that people were so upset about that the author pulled it so she could re-write it.

So since I never re-read that book, I had no idea how much my opinion on everything would have changed. I absolutely loved Ana so much in the version I read. She was such a bad ass but so was the rest of the characters. And yet.. Ana wasn't that version in this one. She seemed to lack growth/development and I just wasn't a fan of that one bit.

Yes, the rest of the characters were still amazing. They actually got some growth. The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars was the predictability. Yeah, things were really predictable in this one and that just disappoints me.

Plus I was confused when certain things just sort of disappeared that were mentioned in the beginning. It just didn't make sense to me. Then there's the new "villain", and eh. Not my cup of tea. Again - predictable.

It pains me to keep saying that word too. Not sure what the next book will bring me but I'm hoping it goes out with a bang. Seriously, it needs to get better.

okay mini update time!

when i first read this, i’ll admit that i was a bit confused on how exactly i felt about it. because i had been waiting for red tigress to be released for almost a year and a half, i spent a lot of time with the world of just book one, getting excited for what i thought this installment would be.

and this... wasn’t what i thought it would be?

not in a bad way! just in a way that confused me at first.

it so often happens in a series that book one will start out relatively small, with the second installment majorly expanding the world and raising the stakes. and that was what i should have expected to happen in this book, but somehow in my year and a half of preparation i never prepared myself for the idea that this would have to be pretty different from blood heir.

which definitely threw me at first, so when i finished it, despite being emotionally devastated from what was happening to my loves here, a part of me thought i didn’t like it??

now that i’ve spent some time with it, i don’t think that’s the case. i’m still a bit confused, and do plan on rereading it soon to fully sort out my thoughts, but this left me with no lasting bad impression, not at all. once i let go of my conceptions of what i thought this would be i realized that i really appreciated what this actually was.

all that to say, i’m gonna give this five stars for now. i do believe it deserves it. and hopefully after a reread i’ll be able to say more abt the book itself!! :)

kinda tempted to just immediately reread this ngl. anyways i’m broken!!

“ ‘Prepare for war,’ ” she recited. “ ‘The Red Tigress returns.’ ”

Ramson leaned forward and, this time, pressed a gentle kiss to her lips.
“You ready, Witch?”
Ana nodded, and their fingers clasped tightly together. “Try to keep up, con man”

It's been way too long since the last time I rated a YA fantasy five stars. Finally! I've found what I was looking for. This series is a hidden gem. Why is it so underrated?? It deserves to be treasured with love if not be worshipped......

Some rulers’ reigns were forged with steel, some with gold, and some with might.
And mine, Ana thought, closing her eyes. Mine is forged by blood.

The "Blood Heir Trilogy" is a loose retelling of Anastasia. "Red Tigress" is the second book of this trilogy. It's a multi pov story that follows Ana, the rightful empress of the throne who now has to live a fugitive life because of some vicious conspiracy. We follow Ramson, an infamous con artist and another air affinite named Lin. Then there are also a few chapters from the perspectives of some side characters like Yuri, the head of the rebellion and Sharaima, an elderly woman who can see future....

"Did monsters and men who made bad choices have the capability to love? And did they deserve love in return?

Objektivně vzato je fakt dost v poho, protože Amélie Wen Zhao to prostě umí a stopro chcete její Dědictví krve číst. Ugh!!! (= takový ten skřek, když jste hóóódně frustrovaní)

Kamoši, netuším ani kde začať. Bolo to skvelé, fantastické, brilantné! ♥️

Keby som mohla, sama by som ju nechcela vedieť 🥲.

Ostatné postavy a môj lietajúci ship boli trochu zatienené, čo mi však as úplne nevadí?

I thoroughly enjoyed Red Tigress and seeing Ana come more into her own. Ramson Quicktongue was just as witty, but somehow any scene with Ana made him feel a bit diminished, while on his own, he shone more. While I can understand this device, it made me feel removed a bit as a reader.

I did feel this one stepped out more from the lore that it was hinting about in the first novel, and found a bit of its own footing. There are a lot of new unveils and a massive new plot which was albeit a bit predictable but still enjoyable due to the cast of characters.

The biggest issue for me was some fluff in the language. In one of the later chapters, there is a line that stood out as being a perfect scene closure: She was the Red Tigress of Cyrilia, and that would be enough." This was powerful and should have stopped, but then more lines of text diminished its greatness, and it felt like this happened several times around and could have been perfected in editing.

The other negative was the complete loss of something that made the book great and unique... I won't spoil it for anyone, but I do wonder how the series will recover going into book three off of a massive cliffhanger.

Solid 3.5-4 Stars.

While I enjoyed the book, it just didn’t compel me in the same way Blood Heir did. The characters were vibrant and played off each other so well in Blood Heir, but it seemed to me that in Red Tigress, the characters and emotional dynamics were sacrificed for the sake of the plot.

funnily enough, When I first read this series, I had the exact opposite idea about the two books, it just felt like there was so much more this book could have been. There were a fair few predictable moments that meant twists or shock betrayals failed to land.

I was less invested in what was actually happening in the story because to me, it seemed like the emotional intensity for the characters just wasn’t there this time around. The stakes seemed less personal. With all that being said, though, I do think this was a good sequel to Blood Heir in terms of plot and sets up for the last book in the trilogy well.

credit

The most frustrating part about it is the lack of emotional depth in certain scenes. While I found a lack of emotion in the characters in Blood Heir, this time, it’s the writing. There are also multiple elements not fully explained which left them feeling hollow and pointless. Like, I just started to feel for the character and next thing I know, it’s like okay, on to the next plot point. I wish the characters were given some time to process and work through their emotions on the page.

And, this is a minor spoiler but, the ending of Red Tigress happens because of a miscommunication! I was appalled at the ridiculousness of these plot points.

Ana and Ramson’s romance here also felt more grounded in reality. In Blood Heir, the attraction between the two hardly felt at all natural; it felt like Zhao was forcing them to be together. But there’s an understanding between the both of them in Red Tigress even though there are too many obstacles in their separate lives they need to resolve before they can spend forever in each other’s arms. Together, they seem more mellow, grounded and for lack of a better word, in love.

The ending felt too fast-reserved and I really don't know what to make of it. I reread this series to read the finale and I have to wait to see what I actually feel about it.

This story moves fast and had so much action – and it got pretty bloody at times too. There were a lot of things in play, Yuri and the rebellion, the kingdom of Bergon and it’s secrets and people finding out the princess is alive so I was definitely invested in the story.

credit

I wanted more of Ransom and Ana together but I get they had their own business to take care of. Obviously they care for one another and I just hope in book three they can have their happy ever after.

I really like the element of the rebellion, the Redcloaks, led by Ana’s ex-friend (it seems now), Yuri. He has a cold killer warrior on his side though, Seyin, and I wonder how he comes into play later. I don’t trust him. I also really enjoyed getting to spend more time with Linn and seeing her character grow. I hope we get to spend plenty of time with Linn and Kais in book 3.

I think this was an entertaining sequel to Blood Heir. Only thing I wish it had more of was the Ana and Ransom scenes I enjoyed in book one. My favorite character from this book is Linn though – she was strong, such an amazing fighter, and a good friend. I like how there are different factions in play and that Ana not only has to fight her aunt for the throne, but Yuri her ex-friend and rebel leader.

The story starts where the The Blood Heir ended.

Ana travels beyond her beloved Cyrilia in order to find alliance in the Kingdom of Bregon. Without an army behind her back, it is impossible to claim her rights to the throne. Unknowingly, her so-called allies have their own agendas that it is now difficult to distinguish friends from foe.

The enemy of my enemy is also my enemy, who might have been my friend.

Does that make sense? Well, whatever.. That is my conclusion to this is mindboggling, mouthgaping, twisted book. Red Tigress is full of complicated turnarounds, and one has to keep up, otherwise it's easy to get lost in the phasing this story has. The plot became more intriguing with the addition of several key characters. Though enemies or not, I don't even know whose character to trust in this book anymore. I feel like they're all villains trying to be heroes, trying to save this fictional world in their own skewed ways.

I will always choose what's best for Cyrilia.

Then why is it that it still seems you're trying to find your path, Little Tigress?

I know! And I'm a little disappointed in Ana's lack of character development. I was hoping to see a bit more growth from her, but I feel that she's still the same naive, lost, and confused girl I've read in book one. Sure, she now know how to control her power (sort of, before she lost it), but she's still undecided as to what her purpose is without the help of others. Her decisions were erratic as if she's only winging it by scenarios. To choose the throne over power, or destiny over love, or peace over war, or enemies over friends, or life over the claim to the throne, and back again. I know it's not supposed to be easy (and I'm not the writer of the story), but for me, if Ana truly wants to save her empire and win, she has to learn to play the game, to be more cunning, tactical, and less emotional and predictable. But, I didn't see any of those here. She's still an expectator, easily deceived and manipulated... weak. Now I am more inclined towards Linn. At least she knows her choice, and she stands up for it. Still, as I mentioned earlier, I don't trust this series' characters anymore. More so now with that freaking ending with Yuri..😱

So how will I wait for more than a year for the third book to come out? How?? 😭

“We will not find fairness in this world. But it is up to us to take what we are given and to fight like hell to make it better.”

Once again, I am blown away by Amelie Wen Zhao. This book is such an amazing sequel to Blood Heir: it expands the world, develops the characters and relationships, introduces new conflict, and grapples with morality. The politics and intrigue weave together wonderfully with the dark fantasy setting, and there is enough action to prevent the story from ever dragging. Though I went in remembering very little of the plot of the first book, the story was still easy to fall into and the world never felt underdeveloped.

“I know how it feels, to be trapped. But if there is anything I have learned, it is that you can always make a choice.”

Linn
Though she plays somewhat of a supporting role, her character remains my favorite. Watching Linn grapple with her power while simultaneously dealing with her blooming relationship with Kaiis was interesting and intense. I love how she treats the other escaped indentures, and how her past enslavement makes her more empathetic to the world instead of the opposite. Linn had so many chances to hurt others the way she had been hurt, but she instead decided to do what was right--even when that was the hardest choice to make. Above all else, she refuses to be broken by the horrors she endures, instead taking each event and letting it make her stronger.

Ana
She has never been my favorite character in this series, though I do find her interesting. Watching Ana step into her power and deal with the truth of her empire added to her character, as did her desire to make the world a better place. Her control over blood magic suddenly got better across the span of a few chapters--which annoyed me--but I can appreciate the way her arc left off. Overall, she does fall into the category of overpowered YA warrior princesses, though Amelie Wen Zhao takes the trope and does it rather well. Ana could easily be the villain if someone else was telling the story, and I am so glad that that fact was never ignored.

Ramson
He reminds me of a younger and dumber Kaz Brekker (which is--oddly enough--a compliment). I am so glad Ramson faced his past and family, and I enjoyed watching him attempt to outsmart and outcon everything that drew breath, especially towards the middle. The addition of his sister was an interesting choice, and I liked how comparisons could easily be drawn between the two siblings. Ramson's romance with Ana is sort of cute, despite the fact that they will always put other things before it when it comes to their priorities.

Kaiis
I don't really remember him from book one, but liked where his character went in book two. Honestly, he is a lot like Mattias from SoC when it comes to overall character, though his motivations are very different. Speaking of which, Kaiis had the most interesting moral arc of all of the characters. His choices--or lack of them--felt very human and raw, making him seem like a probable human. The way hints about his parentage were laid out early on made every twist easier to believe, and though some of his decisions were rather obvious, I liked their effects on the plot as a whole.

Sorsha
She was my least favorite character in the book. I understand that she is written to be one of the villains, but felt that it was impossible for readers to sympathize with her. Sorsha has gone through so much pain that had she had a few cracks in her armor of madness, her character would have been all the more compelling. Monsters that have been made by circumstance are some of the most interesting characters out there, yet Sorsha just felt bad for the sake of bad. When readers are able to sympathize with the villain, the complexity of the story increases tenfold, something I wished would have happened here. Honestly, Sorsha felt like a missed opportunity for character development with the rest of the cast, and I hope her character is explored more in book three.

“I am afraid, Ama-ka."
"That, my daughter, is when you can choose [...] to be brave.”

One of the most remarkable things about this series is the fantastic writing and worldbuilding. Every nation has complex political structures, historical backgrounds, and corruption, just as each villain is interesting in their own way. The world is so easy to fall into because it so well developed: the magic system makes sense and the scenes take little effort to picture. As to the writing, each word is well chosen and powerful. Not a single sentence felt unnecessary or lacking. The main reason I gave Red Tigress four--really 4.25--stars is that the villains did have iffy motivations, and some events were easy to predict, yet even taking that into account, this is still an excellent novel.

“Sometimes [...] bravery was not loud, or grand, or brilliant as the blaze of a thousand fires. Sometimes it was quiet. Unremarkable. Unknown. The resilient wend of water through rocks, year after year after year.”

This series is perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas, something I don't say lightly. If you are at all interested in high stakes, fast paced fantasy, Red Tigress is the book for you. This book doesn't receive a quarter of the hype it deserves, so please pick it up if you think there is even a 20% chance you will enjoy it.

3,5 🌟

1) Blood Heir ★★★★☆

"She was Anastacya Mikhailov, blood Affinite and rightful Empress of Cyrilia. And she would fight for her people."

I'm not gonna lie: I was waiting to see how Amélie Wen Zhao would handle the middle book in her trilogy. If I love the first book in a trilogy, the middle book is really a turning point: either the author delivers something equally great or even better, in which case this promises to be a trilogy I love, either the middle book is a filler or goes into a direction that's not promising for the conclusion.

With Red Tigress, the author made me love this world and the characters even more and I look forward to Crimson Reign as it promises to be an epic conclusion for a great trilogy. First, she really grew as an author since Blood Heir which was already great. We follow the two MC from the first book, Ana and Ramson, but we also see more of Linn (and my love for her is even bigger) and Kaïs is a good addition to the cast. The characters are better written and I felt much more interest towards them. The romance is also better. I mentioned in my review of the first book that I didn't feel the chemistry and wasn't sold on it, but it really improved as well.

If you loved Blood Heir, you're gonna be impressed by Red Tigress. For those who had mixed feelings, this book might just be the one who will convince you. I'm really looking forward to Crimson Reign which promises to be an epic conclusion!

this is the second book in the blood heir trilogy.

ana, the only surviving member of cyrilia’s royal family, is determined to get back the throne, which is rightfully hers. she again partners with ramson and the two go on a journey to win ana allies and make a better world for everyone, affinites and non-affinites alike.

i don’t remember much from book one, but this book was nevertheless fairly easy to get into. i loved how fast-paced and action-packed this was. the characters also grew a lot which is another aspect i love to see in books!

i can’t believe it took me so long to pick this one up after book one. i’ll definitely read the conclusion to this trilogy soon!

Can’t decide between 3 or 4 stars - it was good, but some parts disappointed me? Felt like it only heated up at the 1/3 mark. Suffered from the splitting up main characters syndrome.

Thank you to the publishers for allowing me to read an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review

"Courage filled her; a surge of hope. She had lost her affinity, but here.. here was proof that she did not need it to lead.

This is the way the second book in a series should be done! The pacing was even and picked up at the perfect moments, the action and storyline was more intense and it was hard for me to stop reading after certain scenes. I was shocked quite a few times and the cliffhanger was brutal in the best possible way!

I'm ready for book 3 and I totally need more Ransom in my life!
