War has hovered around the kingdom of Scylla for generations ever since the original sirens left the mer collection generations ago after nearly drowning the human prince. Over the years, select mermaids from the royal bloodline have been trained as spies to work for the reigning kings and queens, keeping the collection safe from sirens and humans. Celena and her partner, Merrick, work covertly for the royals—not even her twin brother knows. When they discover the sirens have broken through the barriers the mer set up to keep the sirens out, Celena and her friends must race to the old kingdom of Metten to stop them from starting a war within their borders. When she’s dragged to the surface, Celena realizes that the war above the waters is as deadly as the one below the waves—and sacrificing herself may be the only way to protect her family. The Siren Wars have only just begun.

Have you ever had a dream of growing a tail and making the ocean your home? If so, this book can drag you down to the deep and give you the epic underwater adventure you have always wanted to be a part of.
What is the book about?
Celena is part of the royal bloodline in a kingdom on the bottom of the sea. She is a mermaid but she does not have a carefree life. Celena enjoys the wonders the ocean has to offer but also faces the dangers it holds and she is more than ready for them as she was trained to be a spy. Generations ago, a group of mermaids loved to sway the humans above the waters by their luring voice and took advantage of them which the mermaids did not like and therefore the group left the mermaid kingdom and became a faction known as the sirens. While the mermaids and sirens have not crossed paths for generations, there is still some bad blood between them. When Celena and her partner find out the sirens have breached the barrier, all hell is set to break loose on the bottom of the ocean.
What is my take on the story?
The story can really be divided in two parts. The first part is about Celena showing us this wonderful world beneath the waves and coming across the sirens, which results in a battle. The second part is about dealing with the consequences of the turmoil that took place and Celena figuring out that the real fight has only just begun.
I quite like the story, it just flows nicely and all fits the world that the writer created. The story feels organic as one thing leads to the next and actions do have consequences. There is a hint of romance though it never takes over from what is most important. The plot is the main focus of the book, which is how it should be in my opinion.
The battles are quite fast but also a bit furious. Though I would have liked spending a bit more time during those raging battles. There are quite a few characters in this book and especially during battles it could be a bit hard to keep track of them all. It might have served the battles better to focus on one element of the battle at a time, giving us readers some more time to take everything in while also adding a bit of epicness and organized chaos into the mix. What helps a lot to elevate the battles is that all the fights are set up well. The build up toward the fight is half the fun.
Do the character leap from the pages?
As said, there are a lot of characters to be met in this book but don’t be alarmed. The characters are well thought out and at the very least you could say that at least one of them really stands out as a wonderfully crafted character. Protagonist Celena in particular is quite the sassy mermaid who you would love to come across when you take a swim, though I wouldn’t want to catch her on a bad day. One thing I do have to say and that is that the characters’ hair and appearance do take quite a bit of focus in the minds of these mermaids and mermen which is not something I would have expected.
Another thing that is incredibly important in a book such as this is the world building, which is done quite nicely. There is definitely more than just the mermaids and the sirens on the bottom of the sea but I do wish to read more about what else might be found underwater, which is something that lacks occasionally. The humans in the story are also quite brushed over which gives the story a lot of room to grow in following adventures in this series. Overall though, the world crafted by the wonderful mind of the writer should do the trick to take you on a ride in a magical world beneath the dangerous but always stunningly beautiful waves of the ocean.
Would I recommend this book?
I should hope so. If you’ve read the synopsis and your interest is piqued but your heart is left in doubt, I would advise you to give it a shot. It is a fun lighthearted book with a lot to offer.
This is a friends to lovers story. There is also an ancient family divide and feud between the sirens and mermaids. There is amazing fashion and storytelling.
I didn’t know the difference between a siren and a mermaid until this book. Man who know you could be so similar and yet so different from people you are related to. A siren in this story are those that come from the Chantay branch of the family and they still use their siren ability, manipulative singing. The mermaids come from the descendants of the other royal family members who do not have the ability to siren.
The sirens have become tired of living their way of life and would like to take over the mermaids home. Who will win is still up in the air but sacrifices are made and love is found.
I did enjoy this story, though there were parts that seemed a little messy. I didn't really get a feel for what the main set of characters look liked, there was only small snippets of their description mentioned and it wasn't enough to remind me.
The plot was good, especially the backstory with Persephone and how the fracture came between the Mer and the Sirens. The world-building was interesting, adding things like the bioluminence lighting and the way they decorated themselves was cool.
The fight scenes felt a little jarring at times and it wasn't always clear just what was happening. But otherwise the pacing was good.
Overall, this is a well written story with interesting characters, an interesting setting and good world building. My only problem on the technical side would be too many characters to keep track of that those outside of Celena immediate circle got lost in the shuffle. However, as much as I tried to get into the story, including one of the plot twists involving Celena, my interest wasn't there outside of a few chapters and found myself slogging through the story. I'm sure this story has its fans and many like it. I'm not one of them, as much as I tried to be one.
This was a fin-tastic read! K.M. does an amazing job creating and describing her underwater world. I couldn't put this story down and can't wait to read the next edition!
Pre-warning, you'll want to buy the whole series, not just the first book. With that being said this is a fast paced story and I loved the constant action. Though the writing style isn't exactly what I like, I loved the plot. I look forward to finishing off the series. If you liked Kiera Cass's Siren, or even the Selection series then you'll like this author and this series. I hope this helps! Happy Reading, and Blessed Be. Lily Ashtree
I loved this book. It has a strong main character who fights for what she believes in. There is suspence, intrigue and romance but it secondary to the main plot. I would highly recommend. This is suitable for all since there is no sexual content or violence or profanity. Would highly recommend
