The latest installment of the DCI Ryan series sees Ryan faced with a madman who is blowing up bridges in the city of Newcastle. As the public react with mayhem to the terrorist threats Ryan and his team race against the clock to chase down the culprit who calls himself The Alchemist. In a side plot one of the team members has found himself compromised in a murder (slight spoiler, though it is introduced in the first chapter).

In all it was an easy to read book, but some parts of it seemed rushed, and could have been fleshed out a lot more, especially with the murder investigation. It seems that the author had introduced a situation in the previous books in the series and didn't know what direction to take with it, so just eliminated it all together and it was all just glossed over. All in all though, this was still a very enjoyable book, and it left hints as to where Ryan is heading in the future. Well worth the read if you like the series.

This is going to be a hard review to write as I really don't want to give any spoilers away.

Stories don't get more shocking than the beginning of this book. When you've read it, you will know what I mean. I had very mixed emotions about the incident in question and I couldn't get those pages turned quick enough to see how Ryan was going to resolve it.

Not only is Ryan faced with trying to help out a friend he is also working a very dangerous case to do with bomb threats. Due to the possible threat of innocents being killed, this really is a matter of urgency of which you can feel it throughout the story.

There really is a mixture of everything going off in this book. It is also one very much about different relationships which in part makes for some emotional reading.

Seven Bridges is an extremely tense, page turner of a read. With a story that hits the ground running, it really does make for an unputdownable read that is guaranteed to be a huge hit with fans of the series. The author certainly does not disappoint and leaves the readers desperate for more. Another brilliant read.

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Having read and loved all the previous books in this series, I was thrilled to be able to read Seven Bridges. To be honest, I had been dying to read it as soon as I finished Dark Skies because LJ Ross left us all wanting to know what was going to happen.

In Seven Bridges, we are back with DCI Ryan, Anna and the team as they try to move on with their lives followiNg events in the previous books. Seven Bridges opens with a rather shocking storyline, which I’m not going to go into detail about because of spoilers, but I will say I was NOT expecting it and had to pick my jaw up off the floor.

As well as this, DCI Ryan and his team receive a message from someone threatening to blow up the Tyne Bridge. As they begin a race against time to try and solve the clues, the story moves at breakneck speed. This pacing means that the reader will find it almost impossible to stop reading!

I absolutely raced through Seven Bridges, reading the whole thing in one day. I genuinely couldn’t put it down. LJ Ross has an excellent knack for writing characters that you care about, becoming completely invested in their lives, and Seven Bridges is no different. I read with trepidation at times for fear of what I might read.

This series is so brilliantly-written. It has an engaging cast of characters and never feels stale. With each new book, LJ Ross injects even more life into the team, and the stories are always captivating. It is not a stretch to say this is one of my favourite series out there at the moment, and they get better with every installment.

Seven Bridges is a clever thriller, packed with a cast of characters that welcome you like old friends and an utterly gripping plot. I defy you not to love it! (And probably develop a crush on DCI Ryan, if you haven’t already!) 🙂

Highly recommended!

Brilliant

Having loved all the previous books, I was really looking forward to catching up with DCI Ryan and his team. I was not disappointed, this helps us to understand the reason for the anxiety Ryan was under in the previous book.

This book deals with a couple of cases, 1 affecting a former member of his team and another where someone is threatening to blow up the iconic bridges. The two entwine very well, and end with eñtrique. Book 9 why not.

L.J.Ross "Septyni tiltai"

I couldn't wait to return from holiday to read this book! Seven Bridges is book 8 in the series which is still as fresh and exciting as the first book. An agonising wait after reading Dark Skies for the decision on DCI Ryan's future and for me, the fate of Jack Lowerson. What a mixed bag of emotions were unfurled. The sensational plot evolves around the threat to destroy the iconic bridges in Newcastle. Bomb Disposal Units are brought in. Ryan, and the team, including Frank Phillips, Denise Mackenzie and Melanie Yates are under pressure and and with time restraints to find the perpetrator. There are a few shocks and surprises in this amazing, tense, gripping crime thriller. Thrown into the mix of tension and intrigue is the hilarious banter and humour. A superb read!

8 inspektoriaus Rajeno detektyvas.

The prologue works well, going back ten years and giving the background to DCI Ryan’s toxic relationship with the woman who is now his boss. In the previous book it was evident that Detective Chief Superintendent Jennifer Lewis had an agenda as far as Ryan was concerned, seeing herself as a woman scorned. Determined on revenge and to bring him down, she caused as much disruption to the team as she could.

Back in the present, Ryan and his wife, Anna, are celebrating their new home, sharing dinner with two of their closest friends, DS Frank Phillips and DI Denise MacKenzie when another close friend arrives unexpectedly, obviously in shock and with blood on his jacket.

In addition to trying to help their friend, Ryan and his team are faced with bomb threats from someone calling himself The Alchemist. If the terrorist doesn’t get what he wants the fate of thousands of people and the bridges over the river Tyne are at stake. The first target is the Tyne Bridge and it’s literally a race against the clock to beat the midnight deadline set by the bomber.

I’ve loved this series from the first book, and Northumberland has become one of my favourite places. All due to a random choice for Rosie Amber’s Friday Five Challenge when the gorgeous cover of Holy Island caught my eye. The characters have developed and grown with each book into a tight knit team of likeable and realistic friends and colleagues. It’s always a pleasure to catch up with them. I also love how LJ Ross uses a particular landmark as the setting for each story, the descriptive prose painting a vivid picture.

The tightly woven plot is written extremely well, full of suspense and tension. There are enough red herrings and surprise twists to keep this reader from guessing anything correctly. Exciting action sequences contrast well with shock revelations and more touching moments and, as always, there are flashes of humour added into the mix. An unfinished thread from the previous story is touched on briefly, and it points to that being carried on in the next book. Looking forward to it!

I am a massive fan of DCI Ryan and have been patiently waiting for this eighth book, after the last one left us wanting more. Has always LJ Ross doesn't disappoint with this belter of a story and brings us another exciting mystery.

In Seven Bridges we catch up with Ryan and his team where they are coming to terms with events from the previous story. Having said this you can read this has a standalone.
The story starts of one hell of and opening where i found myself hooked and racing to the end to find out what was going to happen.

We follow the story of a case where DCI Ryan receives a bomb threat message. The clock is ticking and its a race against time to solve the mystery of the bomber before every bridge is burned, along with everybody on it... sounds exciting doesn't it?! Well I can tell you that it certainly is.

Compared to the previous seven books, I felt like this was nothing like her other books with less description of the scenery/setting. Which I actually missed. It's has if author has had stepped outside her comfort zone, and stepped up her game with the crime thriller side of the story and wrote an action packed, gripping, page turner.

Fans old and new will not be disappointed I highly recommend it giving it 4.5 stars

Dar vienas neblogas L.J. Ross detektyvas.

Two mysteries/crimes at the price of one! LOL

For the first: was I sorry to see the bitch dead? No, I wasn't! I'm bloodthirsty like that! ;)
Was I sorry to find out who killed her? Yes I was!

As for the second one:

Ok, on to the next! :)

This is book 8 in the DCI Ryan series and each book just gets better and better in my opinion! It’s one of the few series that I have on my “must read” list and as soon as I finish one I am desperate to read the next! You can read Seven Bridges as a standalone as there is a complete case within the plot here but I guarantee that if this is your first introduction to Ryan and the team, you will be downloading all the other books in the series after you’ve read this one!

Seven Bridges actually starts with a rather shocking twist that was jaw dropping for me as it was completely unexpected! I’m not saying anymore than that apart from telling you that Ryan has to cope with some very difficult circumstances as well as investigating a bomber who is holding the whole of the area to ransom. The bomb control unit need to be brought in when someone threatens to blow up seven bridges unless they are paid off. So there is plenty of fast paced action for the team as they attempt to find out who is doing this and why? I thought I had it all figured out about half way through but those sneaky little red herrings disguised the whole truth from me until the very end!!

And at that point I wanted to jump up and shout “Bravo!!!!” because this was such a perfectly crafted mystery that just worked well on so many levels for me! There is everything you need for an addictive page turner wrapped up in Seven Bridges. I became involved in the personal lives of characters that I have come to know and care about, I was swept away into the crime procedures as the investigation of an intriguing case took place and finally, I was blown away by the subtle humour that always makes sure I have a huge smile on my face whenever I’m reading a DCI Ryan book.

There were thrilling action sequences that were offset by some quieter, more poignant moments and I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster as I raced through the narrative, never quite knowing which way it was going to go next. Which leads me to that ending and the perfect set up for book 9!

Definitely a must read series that is highly recommended by me!

I could not wait to get L.J. Ross’ new paperback DCI Ryan Mystery, #8, which was released only recently in May 2018, and I am so pleased to have received and read it already! Boy, it makes me miss England as there is so much more to see, but back to the mystery. How DCI Ryan stays so unflappable in the midst of such stressful situations as in this mystery - his past returns and is destroying a friend and a ‘crazy’ decides to begin blowing up bridges in Ryan’s city of Newcastle on Tyne yet Ryan and his CID team mean to keep people safe - is a skill I would very much like to learn. It would make things so much more simple! But once again L. J. Ross’ writing kept me glued to this book. I enjoy the major characters so much that I feel as though they are friends of mine. Fast paced, intriguing, and throw in a few jokes with a couple of smiles, Ross’ new book is a winner! 4 1/4

This is a great book.
We finally learn what happened with Ryan and Lucas and find out how manipulative she was when she was with him.
There's a shock in store at Anna and Ryan's dinner party which has major repercussions throughout the book.
Ryan then receives a call saying a bridge has a bomb planted on it and will explode at midnight.
The bomber has made the press aware so everyone flocks there thinking it's a hoax.
When it explodes people are shocked but luckily only have minor injuries.
A further threat comes in and Ryan and the team have to pull out all the stops to ensure no- one is hurt this time.
This is a great book and I loved the ending as it ties up the loose ends at the end of 'Cragside'
I can't wait until the next book comes out!

A solid three stars. The main mystery of this installment was current and, to be honest, a bit terrifying. I didn't figure out whodunit until almost the very end (when the author was dropping all the serious clues, so that doesn't count) so the identity of the perp was a surprise. The secondary mystery and solution just about broke my heart. I can't say anything more without giving it away.

I liked this book. It contained all the things I've come to like about the DCI Ryan books: interesting cultural details of the area, police procedures, solid mystery/suspense without gratuitous details, and some very tender romance between the two main couples.

LJ Ross has done it again. Another absolutely superb book in the "DCI Ryan Mysteries" series.
But that opening... eek, ouch, ooh, aah - no words can describe it properly, so I'll go with sound-effects instead!
This series really shouldn't be missed by anyone who enjoys a darn good story.

Must admit I was a bit disappointed in this the 8th installment of the DCI Ryan Mysteries series.
The story has one main plot related to the bridges referenced in the title, a second "who dun it?" theme related to the murder of a key character from earlier books and a third thread related to the ongoing "Yet to be brought to justice" individual also from earlier books.
The main plot progresses at a steady pace and is interesting however in my personal opinion presents no real surprises, lacked some pace and tension, and despite the effort to introduce a double twist towards the very end was fairly flat.
The second theme, though taking up a lot less volume of the book I actually found to be more interesting and engaging. I did like the way the author described the impact of this crime on the individuals involved, the introduction of another DCI and also the final section and the manner in which the perpetrator is revealed.
As to the third theme, for readers of the series my words are "don't get excited". The Author weaves a few (yes only a few) of instances to keep the reader informed that yes, please don't forget, there is some unfinished business in the world of DCI Ryan. However again this is only my opinion but it is done in such a manner to solely encourage those who want to see closure of this matter to buy the next book. Very disappointing (again only my opinion). A snippet at the start, another snippet towards the end, and then the final "We need to go to Italy!" as the close of the book.
As I listen to the Audio-book versions I will also comment on the performance from of Jonathan Keeble who has also performed the reading of the earlier books. Jonathan is a very good performer with clear pronunciation and crisp delivery, he attempts to weave emotion, volume and passion into his performance. I especially like his "presenter's voice" when he is not attempting to align to a specific character but just act as a narrator. In this particular book however I do not feel his performance was as strong, primarily due to too many of the characters reverting back to the same voice (despite initial attempts to have separate voices for each). This became more and more common as the book progressed and a bit frustrating when those characters (four or five ended up sounding identical) interacted with each other (for example Jack and his father, who is saying what to whom?). Not a show stopper but just not as fantastic a performance as the earlier books.

Book 8 and I loved it as much as the others. I absolutely adore Ryan and Anna and Frank and MacKenzie and I felt so bad for Jack Lowerson. I knew Jack wasn’t guilty but I would never have guessed who really did it.

This was about the murder of Detective Inspector Jennifer Lucas AND I’m so glad she was killed. She was a horrible person.

And it was about the bombings of several bridges and “The Alchemist” wanting 2 million in bit coin paid to an account that the bomber had set up. And the Bomber? That was a really big surprise.

Only a couple of kisses and no F-bomb.

As to the narrator: I doubt very much that I would enjoy these books half as much if I’d just read them. Jonathan Keeble is a phenomenal narrator when it comes to all the different voices and the emotions when he reads.

This is such an addictive series and the fact that I am devouring an audible a day is testament to how well penned this series is. With each instalment you can see the growth in the authors writing and each book is more detailed, twisty and unpredictable.

I adore the characters in this series, both primary and secondary and the author really brings these characters to life with just the right amount of private versus professional life. Another author to add to my crime thriller auto-buys.
