Yellow Rose Trilogy #1

Every Little Thing About You

Rate this book
The first meeting between Slater Rawlings and Liberty Drake could hardly be called ideal. As acting deputy of Shotgun, Texas, Liberty is simply enforcing the town laws. But Slater, a former Texas Ranger with a restless spirit, is surprised to find himself on the wrong side of the law - and even more shocked to realise it's a she who is arresting him!

Yet despite his rocky start in Shotgun, Slater find himself drawn to the close-knit town, to its strong church family, and especially to the fascinating Deputy Drake. As his heart grows more tender toward Liberty, Slater longs to see her turn in her gun and badge. Can Liberty, realising her awakening feelings for the rugged cowboy, give up her position when so many townspeople have come to rely on her? As Slater and Liberty struggle to understand their own feelings and find common ground in their beliefs, God's hand gently guides the way in this unpredictable heartwarming romance.

I especially love the innocence ,and humor of Laura 😆 she was so sweet, and let’s take a minute to appreciate Slater, he was so amazing in caring for the whole family, and especially caring for Liberty! I'm pretty much a fan of anything Lori Wick has ever written and this is no exception. I love this series. Slater and Liberty are a fun couple. I love the innocence of these romances. There is a restrained passion between the couple that shows honor towards each other and towards God. Slater is a new Christian and has recently left his job as a Ranger to find a more permanent home where he can grow in his newfound faith. Liberty is her sheriff brothers backup whenever he needs her. The couple has a rocky start when Liberty has to arrest Slater for not relinquishing his gun and Slater refuses to pay the $10 fine to get out of jail. Once Slater repents of his stubbornness and pride he pays up and seeks employment in town. It isn't sitting right with him that Liberty has to put herself in danger to protect her brother. Liberty too has some pride issues in that she believes that she is the only one that can protect her brother. Even though they are attracted to each other will they both be able to yield their pride and let God do His job? Every Little Thing About You is the first book in this 3 book series. I have read them before and I'm definitely a fan of the Rawlings brothers! Next up: A Texas Sky where we read about Dakota Rawlings.

I love Lori Wick books. This series is about three brothers who come to Christ and the journey that belief takes them through. It is also a love story. Lori Wick is a Christian fiction romance writer and the people who are giving her bad reviews because of that should just stop reading her work - or better yet, keep reading and maybe you'll find your own way to Christ. I pray that is the case.

The characters are unbelievable and certainly don't seem to fit Texas in the 1880s (did frontier women really have time to get together for a weekly Bible study?). And the message (the heroine gives up a job she loves, is good at and that serves the community, because her man doesn't approve) does not really reflect the MUTUAL submission the Bible calls for.

I've read this one before. It's an easy read, and I actually read this one instead of audiobooking it. It was interesting to read something that I liked back when I was in high school, and how I viewed it differently now.

I truly LOVED this series. I actually took notes from it (from some of the pastor's sermons that are in the book). I learned a lot from them. Very entertaining as well!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really enjoyed re-reading this book. Its a great story and its interesting to see the struggle Liberty has with giving up control and also recognizing that she has an issue with getting what she wants and doing what she needs to to get that and then realizing how dangerous that attitude could be. Good read!
This trilogy is about three brother who have become believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and how this believe changes their lives.
This book is about Slater Rawlings and Liberty Drake and how the Lord brings them together. Texas Ranger Slater Rawlings quits his job and end up in Shotgun where he is arrested by Deputy Liberty Drake. As Slater and Liberty struggle to understand their own feelings and find common ground in their beliefs, God's hand gently guides the way in this unpredictable, heartwarming romance.
Injustice in Shotgun Texas.
I am not going to get into my feelings about other moral issues or all the cliches and things that I just found irritating about this book (which were a lot, by the way). I will just focus on ONE issue.
There are about a thousand ways that Wick could have made the awkward introduction between Slater and Liberty. Why did she have to do it by making Griffin and Liberty completely unjust, cold-blooded, law enforcers?
I mean, Slater takes too long to obey Liberty via handing over his firearm(not that he had been aiming it or anything like that)...so logically she locks him in prison seemingly INDEFINITELY unless he pays ten bucks (a lot of money in 1881). And why the hefty fine? Admittedly, to raise money to fix up the jail.
But, the Potters can shoot at people... and go back to their farm...or even just the first instance where they don't even go to prison at ALL.
Bernie Shambles (apparently) ANUALLY shoots recklessly at a tree in front of the schoolhouse and is getting booked and fined (apparently) for the first time.
Dakota, in both of his warnings to hand over HIS gun, either hesitates or seems to act like he is going to use it.
Leonard can get drunk, terrorize people, and HURT people with his whip, but he seemed to get out of jail (assuming he did jail time at all) pretty easily.
WHY. IS. THIS. OKAY? Answer: it's not.
Not only is it all insanely unjust and unfair, but we are supposed to think the Drakes are saints!
It made me sick when Slater apologized for being stubborn for not paying the ten dollar fine. IF he had anything to apologize for, he was DEFINITELY not the only one.
This tainted the entire book for me. I was absolutely infuriated with the injustice from this first instance, and only got angrier and angrier as I saw all the REAL crime that seemed to get slap-on-the-wrist punishment, while Slater feels guilty, even though he is a victim of injustice at the hands of Liberty and Griffin.
This book would have been much better if Slater would've paid his way out of prison, gone to Dallas, found a lawyer, and sued Shotgun, Texas for every penny it's worth.
Btw. I am a very devout, practicing Christian, so when I say I have other problems with the book (both morally and otherwise) I do not mean that am offended by the fact that it is preachy or Christian.
I usually love Lori Wick. First I was annoyed at being constantly told how adorable Laura was. She said some cute things, fairly typical of a child of her age, and could have been a fun character if her utterances had just been allowed to happen without always commented upon. The more serious problem with this book though is one of the main plot points. Liberty is the deputy sheriff and very good at her job, then one day a man walks into town, falls in love with her and demands that she quit her job, with the only reason given that it makes him uncomfortable, one can only assume because she is a woman. This is not a good enough reason. Now if her being a woman made her more vulnerable, which it could have done considering the time period, that would have been an acceptable reason, or if he objected on the grounds that as her brother was sheriff it put too much risk in one family that might have been acceptable although hypocritical as his brother was in law enforcement as well, but these reasons are not even suggested, and are in some points refuted by other ideas in the book and we are just expected to go along with the idea that just because she is female she should be willing to give up her job for the man she loves. I am not okay with that idea. Other plot points about arrogance and stubbornness were well made if there had been a better justification given for that point.
This was okay. While I liked the story arc pretty well as a whole and I was moved by several segments, I wasn't always impressed with it as I went along. The biggest thing that annoyed me about the writing style was the way that every line of dialogue/action or "showing" was followed by a line of "telling" how each character feels about it... constantly. It feels like how I would write when I was younger, and it does make it feel a little amateurish.
The biggest character thing that annoyed me was Slater manhandling Libby all the time and never truly, specifically apologizing for it. I would have been irate if he had forcibly locked me in the jail cell, without allowing Griffin (the actual authority) the say in it, and all he does is apologize for "maybe being overbearing sometimes". He was arrogant and rude to shove her in a cell and lock her in against her will! I don't care if he was trying to protect her, if her issue was about arrogance and trust issues, so was his! And he needed to apologize for that moment, and he didn't, and she didn't yell at him, and I wish she did. But I think that just gets my goat in general, and so it was just a sour ending that never got cleared up.
I have the second book so I'll go ahead and read it, but this isn't a writing style or story style that I particularly like, so I'm not likely to pursue a lot by this author.
Slater and Liberty happen to meet in a bar when he won’t give up his firearm. They are both stubborn and that’s how their story starts. He is growing in his walk with God and finds a great church. As he’s growing in Christ, he starts to develop feelings for Liberty. She is returning those feelings. He has a hard time with her being a deputy and putting herself in danger. He helps her brother in her place. Griffin decided to make it permanent with Tess (finally) and they get married. Liberty is too stubborn for her own good and feels left out and puts herself in harms way. It about ruins the plans for her and Slater. But, the situation helps them grow closer and all ends well.
I love Lori wick’s books so much! This is one of my favorites. She brings all the aspects of what a Christian relationship should look like. They respect one another and apologize for even doing or thinking something that they know would displease God. They are adorable and can I add how cute Laura is!?! Omg. She makes the story very comical.
Reading this book gave me all the good feelings and what a relationship can look like without all the stuff. I have read this book many times and highly recommend it to anyone to read. Lori Wick is a brilliant writer!!
Four stars
Prose: 5/5
Romance: 4/5
Characters: 5/5
Plot: 4/5
Prose:
Actually pretty good, considering that in the past I haven't always liked Lori Wick's prose very much.
Romance:
Much better than some other books I've read, the characters had actual issues. Their relationship was really sweet and they really grew through it.
Characters:
All of them had super strong personalities. I loved Laura! Kate and Duffy's relationship was so sweet, as was
Plot:
As far as this goes, it was very developed and I was really swept up in it. (Stayed up until 11:20 pm!)
Overall:
A really good book! I liked it more than some of the other Lori Wick books and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Content:
Two kisses between an unmarried couple, mentions of being drunk/out of their right mind. One character has to shoot someone and they die, mentions of a mother being shot and dying, leaving a family. Mentions of pregnancy, being shot, and marriage. A few kisses between a married couple.
I need a break from westerns, I think.
As other reviewers have said, it annoyed me greatly that there couldn’t be a compromise at the end for the couple on whether Libby should continue her work as a deputy. Why couldn’t she contribute by teaching gun safety, or something? There ought to be a way- and a want-for a woman to do what she loves without scaring her man or harming herself. Even in 1880. But, maybe my modern eye expects too much.
The plot did have some exciting elements-a bank robbery, a shootout, a thief who captures Libby- but these are more in the book for the fallout. The bank robbery lasts about 2 pages. There is way too much nothingness in between.
The supporting characters were done very well and I enjoyed Duffy and Kate and Griffith and Tess more than Libby and Slater. Another thing that was glossed over- we don’t get more than a paragraph about the Griffith/Tess wedding? Oh, ok, we had to cut it to talk about how Mrs whoever left her needle in a chair??
I’ve said this before, I loved Wick’s “The Princess” but I haven’t loved anything else of hers since. Maybe I need to stop trying, and maybe I wouldn’t love The Princess on a reread either
The youngest Rawlings boy finds love with a little sharpshooter.
Loved being back with this author. It's been awhile since I read Cash and Dakota stories. Slater and Libby story had a fun start. Slater wasn't expecting to be arrested by a girl. But he was and it was love at first sight. He loved being in Shotgun. But he didn't like that Libby had to help her brother Griffin defend the town. So he decided to take the job of deputy. That was somewhat of a relief to Libby. But she still wanted to be needed. That upset Slater and it also got Libby into trouble. But all was forgiven. Griffin and Tess love story was sweet along with Price and Amy. Laura and Zach were sweet kids. Duffy and Kate gave good advice. Also it was nice seeing Cash and Dakota in this story before they were married men. Will read more by this author.
You probably know by now that one of my favorite genres is Historical Christian Romance. Lori Wick is a master. I have been reading her books for years and I just found this one on my shelf and wanted to post a quick review. Character development and scene support are both excellent. if you have read any of Lori Wick's sets you know how well she researches everything. It is not lost on me that her own faith and walk with Christ work themselves into every work. Her acknowledgment in this one is for her pastor, pastor's wife, her Bible Study Group, all of which figure prominently in her books. This one, in particular, helped me see my self growing in Christ as the main male character did.
This is the first book in the yellow rose trilogy a series about three brothers finding love. This is the story of Slater Rawlings and Liberty Drake.
The first meeting doesn’t’ go well she throws him in jail for having a gun in a salon and he can’t believe he’s seeing a female deputy.
This is a Christian romance but can be enjoyed by all, I Love Lori Wick and have read many of her books through out the years. This is actually a reread for me and I love it as much this time as I did the first few times. A book you can come back to over and over.
Great for anyone looking for a clean Romance or a teen just dipping their toe into Romance highly recommended.
Book 1 introduces the Rawlings brothers. Slater Rawlings is an ex- Texas Ranger who meets Deputy Liberty Drake, when he comes to a town that forbids the carrying/use of firearms in the saloon. Slater is too slow to comply and finds himself arrested. The adventure and rocky romance begins. This was a story of a woman who has been in the male position of deputy for so long that she is unaware of how she is viewed by men. God's hand gently intervenes as they struggle with their new-found emotions.
Way too preachy. The author seems more worried about explaining beliefs than paying attention to the plot and character development.
Liberty threw the new guy into a jail cell, and then tells him, ir will be ten dollars for the night stay, they need a need jail. Slater being stubborn and angry ends up spending a couple of nights in jail. A town that he soon learned to love, the chapel, was the main reason he wanted out of being a ranger, he wanted daily fellowship so his faith could grow. A delightful setting of families and their lives in a small town. Full of love, laughter, and new marriages.
I am actually kinda disappointed in Every Little Thing About You. I love Wick’s Californians series and had hoped that this would be similar but it was definitely off. There were weird subject changes where they would just start talking about something else entirely. Also the romance felt a bit forced at times and also made it seem like Dakota was supposed to be the love interest too.
Just not want I expected for a Wick novel.
December 31, 2022
Sexist, misogynistic, patriarchal drivel. I actually like some of Lori Wick’s books because they are fun light reads. But this one is ridiculous. The men in the main character’s life suddenly decide she shouldn’t be doing her job, which she has done well for years. They assault, abuse, and gaslight her into thinking she’s in the wrong instead of communicating with her. Don’t bother with this one!
I had a hard time getting into the story at the beginning, but the further I read the more I really enjoyed the relationships between everything. The sibling relationships between Slater and Dakota, and between Libby, Griffin, Laura, and Zach. And I absolutely loved the romantic relationships between Slater and Libby, but also really enjoyed reading about the relationships between Kate and Duffy and Griffin and Tess
This cute little Christian romance novel and watching couples learn to grow in Christ but also as couples as they pair off throughout the book is absolutely beautiful. Lori Wick also reminds me of what a man of GOD should want and how important it us to find someone to grow in Christ with and as a couple.
Unlike some of Wicks other books that I have truly enjoyed, I found this one to be unbelievable in many parts for the time period in which it's written. Also there is very strange over explaining simple things. Yes of course. We want to hear details of where the characters are and what they are thinking etc. But this goes into such hyper detail. It was painful.
Amazing book! So many people to love! Such adventures of the heart!
This story is so captivating, right from the start. It’s hard to put it down. The large extended family is so loving and they invite you right into their lives. Adventures and longings keep the story going from beginning to the end. Can’t wait to read the second book. This author is one of my favorites.
Very well written.
Small town Christian romance. Liberty has fallen into deputy sheriff role to help and protect her brother. Former ranger Slater comes to town gets into a little trouble with the deputy ! He's seeking closer relationship with God and ends up with romance and a new family. Ended very quickly for my liking but good thing there's another in the trilogy!!
