April is blessed with 5 kids, 2 cats, the man of her dreams, and a grandson.
If you are a writer and are stuck in your work/blocked this book is for you! Unlike many other books on writing prompts this short, concise book on craft is designed to help you to work out the kinks in projects already in progress. I've seen other prompt books that deal with brainstorming brand new works/novels/short stories/what have you but never found anything else exactly like this. I especially like that Taylor gets straight to the point. She tells you how to use then book then gets right into prompts so you can use them asap. The prompts are very creative. When I was reading it I was actually in a pretty good flow state with my writing work but found myself wanting to use many of the prompts April has devised for my characters anyways because they sounded like so much fun! I will certainly keep them in my arsenal for when times get tough in writing (as any writer knows they always do!). Can't recommend this book enough if you want to get unstuck, know your characters better and take your writing to the next level.
I was provided this book by the author in exchange for my honest review. April has created an amazing resource for writers! There are so many tips in here for different stages in the writing process where you might be stuck, such as characters, locations, etc. but also related to your own motivation hurdles when working through your story. Most of the prompts are unique and involve different interactive writing activities, so you'll be able to find the style that works best for you. I would highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book!
Writing Prompts Decoded is an essential tool for writers of all levels and ages. Have you ever been stuck while plotting your novel because you didn’t know enough about your characters or couldn’t connect the beginning, middle, and end? I know I have. I’ve put stories on hold simply because I knew it was lacking something but couldn’t quite put my finger on it (this book actually made me realize what I was lacking was conflict. It caused the middle parts of my story to fall flat). If you’re done with boring character questionnaires and articles telling you how you should or should not plot a novel, then this book is for you.
This book gives you the freedom to plot naturally in the whatever style you desire. It does a great job getting your creative juices flowing through helpful prompts that can actually be applied to your story later. That’s right, you can actually use this book to further advance with your current WIP (which was a huge plus for me!). Unlike other prompt books, which are normally very helpful with ending writer’s block and great for flash fiction, ultimately they become a distraction to my end goal which is eventually publishing a book. This book, on the other hand, can also help you out of writer’s block but what I like the most about it is it helps you blossom your initial idea and assists you with uncovering more details until you have a skeleton of a book to can work with. Each page dives deeper and deeper into topics such as character development, conflict, inciting scenes, settings, etc. Seriously, the list goes on. The author touches base with every aspect of the novel making progress (so much so that I’ve noticed I’ve unknowingly been skipping crucial steps) and makes plotting your book stress free and fun.
One of my favorite parts of this book actually stems from my least favorite thing to do, working on settings. The prompt in particular I liked (without revealing too much) was in Chapter 3, the “Setting Mashup” prompt. It makes you mix and match setting to create new ones and it’s so entertaining! Sometimes you come up with the weirdest settings but other times you come up with pure gold. It made me enjoy this part of the noveling process and I found my setting had more of an impact on the overall tone of my story (plus it makes it more unique. Who wants bland settings that everyone uses? This helps to spice it up!).
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any writer, especially those who consistently get writer’s block or find themselves swallowed up by the plotting process. This book helps you stay focused, work on details that will help enhance your story, and keep you interested in your story (this was very helpful for me because I’m known for hopping from one shiny new idea to the next). This is a book that you can use multiple times for years to come and still come up with something new.
Note: I was a beta reader for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is more than just a writing prompts book, it's a great tool to help you build backstory and actual content for your novel! April's book is very comprehensive and unique. I can't see anyone not getting out of a writer's slump or writer's block after using this excellent resource. I have never used a prompt before, but now I want to! I can see how these prompts and exercises will strengthen my story. These prompts include actual writing advice to improve your craft all while helping you flesh out your novel, bring our its potential, and tackle the dreaded blank page. 5/5 stars!! :)
I love the concept of writing prompts for a work in progress. Writing Prompts Decoded provides questions (and prompts) to get a writer back on track when they’re suffering from a lack of motivation or feeling stuck. This is a valuable tool for writers, whether you’re working on your tenth book or just starting your first. I was provided an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you are a pantser, this short book can help you flesh out half baked story ideas. You can also use this book before outlining your story. It also has a useful chapter on time management tools and apps. The introduction of the book guides newbies into using these writing prompts effectively.
Most books on prompts can help with creating the initial story idea, but fall short once you are deep into drafting/revising an existing story, something Taylor brings up in the introduction. This book has all types of scenarios to help further develop existing characters and story, along with tips to write a better story, prompts and tips for breaking out of writer’s block, and some tools to help you further in this endeavor. I found the information to be delivered in a way that is easy to understand and easy to apply. It’s actually been a factor in a breakthrough in a story that I was stumped on for almost two weeks prior. If you are a writer of any kind, give this a look, especially if you find yourself stuck in the middle of your story.
