Walk and See Opposites by Roaslind Beardshaw. BOARD BOOK. Nosy Crow (Candlewick). 2018. $8. 9781536202489

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K – ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

This is the story of two children who go outside to enjoy playing on a winters day. There are just two words for each page and they are opposites –as illustrated by the two children and their actions. Climbing up to sled is UP and going down on the sled is DOWN. Rolling a big snowball for a snowman is BIG and rolling snowballs to throw is SMALL. The illustrations are adorable and mellow.

This is a cute book for a child just learning opposites. I like that is presents experiences that could actually happen to the child, which makes illustrating the opposites themselves much simpler. This book would make a good addition to a pre-k program.

Another board book in the series where outdoors themes are central and two friends, a red haired girl and a dark skinned boy, go on to discover the beauty of nature. Very simple opposite book by the same author and illustrator of the Lola books; Rosalind beardshaw. Two children are on a walk in the countryside in the winter. One is for dog, two for friends, three trees with orange colored leaves and four clouds. They are inside and outside getting ready putting winter clothes on, up and down a sledding hill, over a bridge with an icy pond below it. The illustrations tell the story of what the children find in nature into the night on the last page where it is dark outside and light inside.
Colorful mixed medium illustrations add to this simple book for the very young.
Other titles in the series are Walk and see 1,2,3 and Walk and see ABC.

In this baby/toddler age appropriate board book, two children go for a walk in the winter countryside finding many opposite pairs along the way. The simple concept with text and illustrations that feature two diverse children delighting in all that nature in winter has to offer will be a wonderful addition to any home library or the public libraries board book collection. The mixed media illustrations are lush and beautiful to look at and the curious toddler/parent readers will find much to talk about as they progress through the text and illustrations. I would highly recommend this book for purchase to any public library for their board book collections.

Simple book of opposites in a natural context. Most opposite books are boring and lack context. These ultra-simple books have their place, but I always love exploring concepts in natural settings.

*Will have to read the other Walk and See books

Nice drawings but portraying the concept of weight to a 20 month old is difficult.

I love board books, in that I don't have to worry about Cassie being too rough with them. I also love that they are a simple books with less words. But really get the words across on every page. In this book the pictures are colorful and really keep a toddler or younger attention. The words are simple and one word on each page. I also love that my kids can read the words or just look at the beautiful illustrations. This book is cute and should be given to everyone who is starting their kids bookshelf.

Charming book with beautiful illustrations. The opposite words are presented logically and accurately. My only quibble is that it romanticizes country life. I'd rather see a representation of a city scenario.
