Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. See this thread for more information.

New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander was an award winning television reporter until she discovered fiction was much more fun than real life. She turned to writing full time and is still shocked it worked out.

Since the publication of her first book in 1995, she has written thirty-one full length novels and six novellas. The Perfect Wife—originally published in 1996 and reissued in March 2008—hit #1 on the New York Times list. Sixteen of her books are bestsellers hitting the New York Times, USA Today and/or Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. With books translated into more than a dozen different languages she has readers around the world and has twice been nominated for Romance's Writers of America prestigious RITA award. In 2009 she was given a Career Achievement Award from RT Bookclub and was named Historical Storyteller of the year in 2003. In 2008 she was the keynote speaker for the Romance Writers of American annual conference in San Francisco. Victoria credits much of her writing success to her experiences as a reporter.
Her years as a broadcast journalist were spent in two radically different areas of the country: Nebraska and West Virginia. In West Virginia, she covered both natural and manmade disasters. She was on the scene when a power plant construction accident in a small town left 52 men dead. She once spent the night on a mountain waiting to learn of the fate of coal miners trapped in a mine collapse. Victoria was producing a newscast when her husband (who worked at the same television station) and several other journalists were held hostage by a disturbed Vietnam veteran. In Nebraska, she reported on the farm crisis and watched people lose land that had been in their families for generations. She covered the story that was the basis of the movie BOYS DON’T CRY and once acted as the link between police and a gunman who had barricaded himself in his home. Her investigative work exposed the trucking of New York City garbage to a small town dump in rural Nebraska.

During her journalism career, Victoria covered every president from Ford to Clinton. She knows firsthand what it feels like to be surrounded by rising floodwaters and inside a burning building. She’s interviewed movie stars including Kevin Costner, ridden an elephant and flown in a governor’s helicopter. She’s covered a national political convention and Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Denver as well as small town festivals celebrating everything from walnuts to Glen Miller. Her work was honored by numerous organizations including the Associated Press who called a feature about a firefighter’s school "story telling genius". It was the encouragement she needed to turn from news to fiction. She’s never looked back.

Victoria claims her love of romance and journalism is to due to the influence of her favorite comic book character: Lois Lane, a terrific reporter and a great heroine who pursued Superman with an unwavering determination. And why not? He was extremely well drawn.

Victoria grew up traveling the world as an Air Force brat. Today, she lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her husband and her dogs. Victoria had two bearded collies, Sam and Louie (named from characters in one of her books). Sam (on the left), the best dog in the world for 13 ½ years, passed away in September 2010. Louie took on the position of loyal companion and did a fine job even though he doesn't understand that kitchen counter surfing is not allowed!

Now he's been joined by Reggie, also a faithful companion.

They all live happily ever after in a house under constant renovation and the accompanying parade of men in tool belts. And never ending chaos. Victoria laughs a great deal—she has to.

I can't even summon a snarky comment. That's how boring it is.

Fuck this book.

It robbed me of snark.

Therefore, I must DNF.

I wonder if the people from two centuries ago would feel the same way about HRs as I do about New Adult books. There they were, living their lives at balls and morning teas and shit, paving the way for the future, and they had no idea that their generation would be portrayed as a bunch of overly talkative and shallow assholes banging in carriages and making love way more complicated than it should be.

Apologies are owed, friends.

Sarah and I promise to do a more interesting buddy read next time. Seriously. I think this one broke us.

I have not read a Victoria Alexander book for quite a few years. This is another one of her books which I have enjoyed. Both Nigel and Felicity are good characters. I both laughed and felt sad while reading this story.
Felicity is set on marrying Nigel after she first met him. Nigel is so set against marriage that he risk loosing the only woman he’s cared about.

description ...

description ...

This is apparently the 2nd out a series of four (?) books about young men determined not to marry. They have some sort of bet between the four of them as to whom will marry last. I did not read the first book, but after reading this one will certainly go out and find it!

Felicity Melville is a young woman of good family, she has been "out" in society for 7 seasons, which is apparently a lot, but has no desire to "catch a suitable husband"; she wants to marry for love. Astronomy is her hobby, and one night she is out on her balcony looking at the stars and hears a commotion from the house next door - a husband yellling at his wife. She turns her telescope and sees a man climbing out of the window! She is wondering if it is a burglar or if someone was seducing the wife, and she realizes she can no longer see the man. She realizes he's in her garden! He looks up at her and asks if it's safe to leave, she starts to question him as to whether he's a burglar, and then give him directions to the street. Her directions are confusing, so he climbs up to her balcony to get a view of the path to the street. He then climbs back down and loses a shoe in her trellis.

Felicity makes some inquiries and learns the man in question is Nigel Cavendish. Nigel is a from a well-to-do family and has a reputation as quite the rogue. He has a long history of scandalous behavior with married women and widows. Felicity decides she is going to marry him. Nigel finds himself attracted to her but has no desire to marry and tells her so in no uncertain terms.

Felicity approaches Nigel's twin sister, Madeline, and asks for her assistance. She doesn't want to trick him into marriage, she wants him to WANT to marry her. Felicity and Maddy arrange for Felicity to be at all the same social functions as Nigel, and they get to know each other. There is some funny dialogue about whom is stalking whom, and Felicity ends up telling Nigel she plans to marry him. He explains to her it's never going to happen.

When Maddy's birthday party is suddenly moved due to a flood in the house, she asks Nigel to stay and redirect any guests who didn't get notice. Guess who didn't get notice? Yup, that's right - Felicity. A very sweet moment ensues. They arrive at the new location together and are talked into playing cards as a foursome with an older couple. The dialogue during this card game is hysterical. Felicity and Nigel bet on the outcome of the game, and Felicity wins. She claims as her prize a painting that does not belong to Nigel, and insists on taking it home immediately. Felicity wakes in the middle of the night - there is someone on her balcony! She grabs her pistol before she realizes it's Nigel, trying to steal the painting back.

He ends up kissing her, and she drops the gun, which goes off. The bullet hits a large vase at the same time Nigel leaps away from her, through the french doors and off the balcony. Her parents burst in and quickly assess the situation and it is decided that Nigel will marry Felicity immediately to preserve her reputation.

Nigel marries her, and tells her the day after their wedding that he will continue his life as if he were not married - going out to gentleman's clubs, gambling, and staying out all night, BUT he does expect to have Felicity in bed. He does at least promise he will not sleep with other women. Felicity is devastated; she decides not to get mad, she's going to get even. She tells Nigel if he is going to go out nightly and have a good time, so is she, and proceeds to do so. In reality Maddy has set up an astronomy room in a tower of her home and Felicity is going there, but Nigel doesn't know that, he thinks she's going out. And it's killing him...he's falling in love with her.

They decide they're not going to continue having separate social lives, and Nigel accidentally finds out where Felicity has been going. He gets angry at her deception, and yells, but realizes it doesn't matter and he loves her. It's too late, though, because while he's yelling, Felicity decides she's had enough. She goes home to her parent's house, and refuses to see Nigel. He sends notes every day and she refuses him. The end of the book, when he comes to her, is sweet, tender, and funny.

I loved this book! It was laugh-out-loud funny. All the characters were endearing, not just the main couple, and I rooted for Felicity and Nigel. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Wayback Machine time! Well, that was fun!

You know, I’m a big fan of quick-witted comebacks. The reason for that is probably due to the fact that it takes me days after the fact to come up with a zinger. I’m one of those, “I-should-have-said-that” people. I’m always impressed with written dialog which lends itself to repartee. One of my favorite movies from my top 100 list is the old classic His Girl Friday. The rapid-fire quips, and overlapping dialogue in that movie are due to four things: the director, Howard Hawks, the actors, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, but most of all to the writing of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. Yes, an actor can bring the written word to life, but without some good writing, the actor just doesn’t have a chance. And, it really doesn’t matter how many awards an actor has won, they need something to play upon. Well, my little Petunias, on the pages of What a Lady Wants you will find a prelude to some rapid-fire dialog. The words in this book open up all kinds of visual panorama. Granted, the hero in this book was not as suave, or cleverly sly as Cary Grant. Nigel Cavendish is more muddled than suave. He is just never able to keep up with the heroine, Lady Felicity Melville, no matter how much he tries. And, he tries.

Since I have managed to fail in my Lorraine Heath author glom, I decided to jump into the Wayback Machine and reread some of Victoria Alexander’s old books. The Last Man Standing series was my pick. I couldn’t get into the first book in the series, A Little Bit Wicked (2006). But the second book, What a Lady Wants (2007), was highly entertaining. I loved almost all of it! If I had any qualms, it would be the hero turning into a bonehead toward the end of the book, but thankfully that didn’t last for very long. My other issue was: fate. Fate was a big part of this story, and was mentioned a a gazillion times!!! I could have done with a little less “fate” talk.

Anyway, Lady Felicity Melville is wishing on a star, when there is a noise in the neighbor’s house. A big noise, an irate husband noise. It seems that the neighbor’s wife is having a little “roll” with our hero, Nigel Cavendish. Nigel climbs out the second story, runs to Felicity’s house, climbs up her trellis and steps into Felicity’s room. A bunch of fun dialog happens, and Felicity decides Nigel is her destiny. And, nothing Nigel says through the rest of the book can deter her.

I loved Felicity. While she had a bit of a stalker-chick about her, it was all fun. She was one determined woman, and Nigel was the man she was determined to marry. Nigel on the other hand, was a loose-screw who never wanted to marry. In fact, he and his three friends had agreed to a “not-ever-going-to-marry” tontine. I also loved Nigel; never was a man so befuddled, and, so desperate to escape. I think befuddled heroes are one of my favorite things.

Overall, I enjoyed taking a ride on the Wayback Machine, and rereading What a Lady Wants. Nigel and Felicity’s encounters made for a number of delightful moments. As far as the others in this series, it was similar to the Star Trek even/odd phenomena. I was not able to completely reread A Little Bit Wicked (2006), and Secrets of a Proper Lady (2007). But I loved What a Lady Wants (2007), Seduction of a Proper Gentleman (2009), and the short story, Lady Amelia’s Secret Lover (2009). I suggest you take a look at this series…in your spare time. Now on to further adventures in the Wayback Machine, and I’m looking in particular for some of my old author’s who have last names starting with A. I hope this brilliant idea works.

I can't believe I took so long to finally read the 2nd book of The Last Man Standing series. I really enjoyed this book! Felicity made a wish that she'd meet her future husband, a man who would give her adventure instead of living a dull married life. Her wish came true when Nigel Cavendish climbed up her balcony. From that moment on she knew she wanted Nigel as her husband but how could she make this man her husband when he was so opposed to the idea of marriage? Nigel was mesmerized by Felicity but at the same time he didn't want to lose control of his life, he despised the idea of marriage and couldn't even say "Marriage". He stood his ground thinking Felicity would back down but boy was he wrong. Felicity was the one women who could put up with him. Nigel had to grow up eventually, take over the family affairs and stop dallying around. He soon realized that his old life was nothing compared to his future with Felicity. This was a great book! These two made me laugh and I found it funny when Felicity would shock Nigel with her unproper comments. I especially loved all the balcony scenes! I'm looking forward to reading about the last TWO men standing!

Last Man Standing serisinin ikinci kitabı da serinin okuduğum Sonunda Bende Sevdim kitabı kadar keyifliydi.

Second book in Victoria Alexander's Last Man Standing series.

Again, I was impressed! The plot was very convincing, I thought, despite the 43 million references to "fate". It was definitely the MOST well-written we-fell-in-love-because-it-was-written-in-the-stars type of book I've ever read...!

Anyway, so the Lady Felicity Melville is a 23-year-old woman who's about the enter her 5th season. She took the last year off to tour Europe and such... (Sounds good to me! Where do I sign up?) Anyway, she WANTS to marry and she has recieved offers, but she wants a husband who isn't the typical cookie-cutter man of the times--BORING. So, in an act of desperation, she does the unthinkable... *rolls her eyes* She wishes on a STAR! NOOOO!!! I know, it's awful. She wishes for a husband who will fill her life with adventure.

And just when she finishes, there appears the Honorable Nigel Cavendish (whose dad is a healthy Viscount (he won't be inheriting any time soon)), who is escaping out a window of the house next door, where he'd been having an affair with the very MARRIED next-door neighbor... and he climbs right into her yard. Anyway, they end up having an interesting conversation there at night--with him down on the ground and her up on her second-story balcony.

After he leaves, she looks up to the stars and says something like, "Thank you for being so swift!" Anyway, so they end up meeting for real at a ball a couple days later, and I really think the rest is history. She actually GOES TO HIS TWIN SISTER'S HOUSE and TELLS HER that she's going to marry Nigel. And Maddy helps her PLOT! It's quite hilarious.

I don't think any man has ever been SO RELUCTANT to get married before. Holy cow. But it IS an adventure--that's for sure. Felicity is ENTIRELY too outspoken, which makes for some fun times... :) And Nigel is reluctant, but he can't help but want her... it's cute.

Anyway, I really liked it! And just wait for the fairy humor... I about busted a gut. 4.5 stars!

Nigel Cavendish is one of four men who have a wager for who can avoid marriage the longest. If it were a wager for who wanted to avoid it the most, Nigel would win. He's escaping from a rendezvous with a married woman when he encounters Felicity, who has just made a wish on a star for a man with whom she can have an adventurous marriage. And there he is. Wish granted, right? Yeah, not so much. Felicity has to convince him and Nigel just wants to get rid of her because he's not ready to get married. But then they get caught in a compromising position and there's no choice.

So it wasn't the story that bothered me so much as the characters. It was well-written enough, a little unexciting, but still okay. The reason I disliked this book so much was because of Nigel. Here's a man, presumably in his late 20's, who is like Peter Pan. He never wants to grow up even though it's about time he took on some responsibility. Now having that feeling is okay, it's the way he almost whines, "But I don't wanna get married!" each time he talks about it. He reminds me of a child on the verge of a temper tantrum. Completely selfish, really. And Felicity didn't help matters. I mean really, when you see a man running from an angry husband after he's just had sex with a married woman, what about him makes her think, "Yeah. Perfect husband." I just can't fathom why she thought he was such a great catch and why she fixated on him. And she did, really. It was more obsession than actual caring. She did brighten things up considerably there after they married and she put him in his place several times. The girl finally got a backbone and realized what an idiot she'd been, but it was nearly too late. Her clever thinking and righteous anger at the end of the book is what brought this up to 2 stars.

Four eligible bachelors make a daring wager: they each bet a shilling and a bottle of cognac, vowing to remain unmarried until the last man standing claims victory. Nigel Cavendish, one of these determined bachelors, is a charming rake who has no intention of settling down anytime soon. He's determined to savor life's pleasures to the fullest.

Lady Felicity Melville, an adventurous and spirited young woman, becomes intrigued by Nigel when she witnesses him in a compromising situation, escaping through a neighbor's window with the husband of his recent conquest hot on his heels. Felicity believes that Nigel is the excitement she craves in her life, and she devises a plan to win his affection, hoping to lead him toward a more respectable life.

However, Felicity's scheme takes an unexpected turn when a twist of fate and a misfired pistol shot result in her and Nigel becoming husband and wife, although neither of them initially wanted this outcome. Now, Felicity is faced with the challenge of convincing her wayward husband that she's the only woman he could ever desire or need.

Victoria Alexander once again showcases her talent for crafting delightful banter between the main characters in this novel. Felicity's spunk and quick wit make her a perfect match for Nigel, who initially appears more reserved and proper. Their exchanges are not only humorous but also serve to reveal their evolving dynamics and growing attraction throughout the story. Alexander's skillful portrayal of these characters and their interactions adds depth and charm to the narrative, making the book an enjoyable read for those who appreciate witty and engaging romantic banter.

Nigel Cavendish escapes out a window when his lover's husband returns and ends up climbing up into the bedroom of Felicity Melville, who decides he's the man for her; she talks to his sister about how to get Nigel to want to marry her, and they have Felicity wherever Nigel goes, but he finally learns of their scheme and feels he's being forced into his growing feelings for Felicity and so doesn't want to marry her. But just when Felicity lets him go, they are forced to wed.

I had mixed feelings about this story. I was put off by Nigel's cavalier behavior regarding sex and life. He's too old for the way he's acting, and his change seems too much of a leap. Yes, I get that his father forcing him to take responsibility for the family estate is supposed to add to his feelings of being forced to change and grow up, and it could have worked maybe if Nigel had been much younger, but he seemed old and petty to me to act that way in his late 20s.

Also, Felicity trying to force herself into his affections wasn't very likeable to me nor was Nigel's sister. Felicity grew on me later on, though, especially when she realized she should have wished for happiness instead of adventure.

The plot did have some fun twists, though which made up for the character issues. I do think the gun going off the second time seemed forced and too convenient, but the story definitely warmed in the later half of the middle and towards the end.

Well, I’m upping the rating on this one too! Victoria Alexander was ahead of her time in writing romantic comedies. This is essentially what this was. A level headed heroine with a touch of whimsy and wit and a mostly charming hero who had some serious growing up to do keep getting thrown together. It can’t be fate! It can’t be love! Wait…perhaps it is both.

Silly and funny and a little eye rolling but I found myself charmed and entertained and wrapped in yet another cozy older novel. I’ll be revisiting a lot of hers again. I don’t think I appreciated her humor about coming of age when I was so young myself but now I can laugh about some of the angst and silliness.

So I had the last 2 books on my shelf, had to get 1 ans 2. Must read books in order. Found number 1 in the library, and ordered #2 from Amazon and waited and waited!! Received and read today. Am really enjoying this series!!What I liked. The heroine Felicity was 23, practically on the shelf! She was waiting for the right man. An amatuer astronemer, she was looking through a spyglass and saw a man climbing over her fence. She had just wished on a star and a man drops into her garden. It is fate. Nigel is one of the 4 Last Man standing, although one has just gotten married. Nigel planned to be the last, but alas, he met Felicity.

This book is 100% better than the first book of the series. If you thought "Wicked" was a total drag, you will be much happier with book. The main characters are far more likeable, the plot set up more charming, and the readability rating is improved.

This is one heck of a plot set up. In fact, the book is rather comical for a large portion. This title transitions between slower and more quickly moving pacing well. There was a point near the beginning of the book that felt a touch too slow, but things really picked up from there. I do love a meddling family member, and Maddy, the hero's sister, shines in her role.

As for Nigel and Felicity, Alexander has provided some great banter between the two that is both amusing and witty. Felicity is a milding ridiculous character, but she isn't overdone and annoying. She is such a likable heroine with interests outside of being a sweet, boring little debutante. Nigel is ridiculously charming, however, I was incredibly annoyed by his consistent refusing to grow the hell up. Sir? Knock it off. You have spent your entire life knowing you would need to take up the title AND get married. However... gah. He is SO stupidly charming. But also a little stupid. .
As for steam, this is not a very steamy book. There are two scenes that I have combined into one flame as they run directly into each other. Alexander does not use explict language in her writing. There is a touch of role play.

4.5 stars.

Well. This is my first book by this author and it honestly exceeded my expectations. I’ve been reading some really bad books recently & I’m so tired of that.

Part of why I really enjoyed this book was because I really loved Felicity and Nigel.

Felicity is a breath of fresh air honestly, she’s just so straightforward with her words, and always never fails to make Nigel shocked and surprised by her words. In an argument, she always wins, as she constantly interrupts him, and I think that’s amusing.

Nigel is a man child but there’s no fault with that because if he weren’t, we wouldn’t have this book’s existence and seeing him grow up. That is part and parcel of character development. I just really find it funny when he often finds himself shocked by Felicity’s words, often repeating it to make sure he heard correctly. There’s also a surprisingly serious person lying underneath that playful exterior and I liked that.

I did feel they both had great chemistry, from the many conversations and screen time they had. I liked their banter. To me, a romance book is truly a romance book when the hero and heroine interacts with one another, with banter, which this book had, another reason I loved this book. Please take some notes, authors!

The third reason is that this book had humor. It had me laughing out loud many times, mainly because Felicity always makes Nigel shocked. Their conversations and arguments always makes me laugh. Don’t know if anyone feels the same way as me who finds it funny but I do have a weird sense of humor.

As for the plot, it was normal, but was made all the better because of the wonderful characters, Felicity, Nigel, and I really liked Maddy for supporting the hero and heroine from behind the scenes.

As much as I loved reading about these two, I did think the plot was slightly too fast and Felicity’s love for Nigel was questionable. She fell in love with Nigel because he was adventurous. That’s how I see it. Would have been nice to see the love progress a little slower for Felicity. As for Nigel, I felt the pace at which he fell in love was just right.

I would have preferred more sex scenes though as there was only 1 detailed sex scene.

Will be reading more of this author’s books.

I smiled through pretty much this whole book. From the very beginning when Felicity was making a wish on a star to Nigel running from his lover's house and her angry husband to him hiding in Felicity's yard and asking for her help in escaping I was absolutely charmed. I loved Felicity, her honesty and gumption. That she went to his sister's house, declared her intention to marry him, and asked for her help and Maddy was 100% on board. And Nigel was so charming, if a little irritating with his determination to not change his life. The insistence on fate being the catalyst for everything was adorable. I loved all of the meddling, by his sister and the older couple they played cards with. And then after they were married and Nigel made his big announcement that nothing, other than women, in his life would change and Felicity was ready to start having her own adventures, that was great. The fact that her own adventures were just astronomy with Maddy was beside the point; it drove Nigel crazy and helped him realize he was in love with her. He was already making progress working with his father, getting accustomed to running the estates, but now he was finally coming to terms with being married and then the caught Felicity and Maddy and they had a huge fight. Felicity removed herself from the equation. And then his father died. She showed up and played the dutiful wife for the funeral, but otherwise she returned to her parents house. So Nigel did what got them into this mess in the first place, he climbed the trellis to her balcony. He apologized and admitted that he was wrong and they got back together. It was great. I enjoyed the whole thing. Love this author. Love this series. I can't wait to see who the next book is about!

""Benim gibi birisi -evlenebilir, dokunulmamış iyi aile kızı- söz konusu olduğunda seni evlenmeye zorlayacaklardır. Ve senin evlenmek gibi bir arzun yok."

"Ama sen evlenmek istiyorsun."

"İstiyorum ama seninle evlenmek istediğimi söylemedim."

Kırılmış gibi baktı. "Benim neyim varmış? Yanılmıyorsam iyi bir av olduğumu söylemiştin."

"Seni avlamak istediğimi söylemedim."

"Ama düzeltilebilir ve arzu edilir olduğumu söyledin." Başıyla onayladı. "Bunu çok net hatırlıyorum."

"Evet ama bu çok çaba gerektirir. Bu kadar çabaya değeceğinden emin değilim."

*****

"Anlıyorum."

"Neyi anlıyorsun?"

"Sen ona abayı yakmışsın."

"Yakmadım!"

"Pardon.

Felicity wishes upon a star, because she does want to be married and preferably to someone exciting. The she sees Nigel climbing down her neighbors trellis and over the garden wall into her yard after a shot is fired. Their first interaction is cute, he thinks she's young possibly a teenager, it's dark out so he can't see very well and he scolds her for not raising an alarm when a strange man climbs up to her balcony so he can see the escape route she's pointed out to him.
When he learns the next night at a ball she's in her 20's he asks to be introduced to her so he can scold her more roundly for not raising an alarm, but one look in her eyes and he's toast, he just doesn't know it yet.
Nigel is a rake of the first order, Felicity is an intelligent woman just back from a grand tour with a new thirst for adventure. She decides Nigel fits her criteria perfectly and sets out to win him, by not doing very much at all besides being present and indifferent to his presence. Watching him slowly lose his mind was fun.
