Tessa Tarrington's life is swirling out of control. No job. No apartment. Sick Dad...And she's back in high school! Teaching at her Gibson's Run alma mater would be tolerable, except she's sharing purgatory with her mortal enemy, Ryland Jessup. But eight years post-high-school, and after tragedies she can barely understand, Ryland no longer fits her mental image of the over-sized bully he once was. In fact, much to her disgust, he's finding his way into her heart. After the sudden death of his wife, Ryland hung up his professional shoulder pads and picked up a whistle. Now he's focused on coaching the high school football team and raising his daughter. The sudden return of his childhood crush, Tessa Tarrington, has reawakened long-ago feelings. But if God's giving him a second chance to impress Tessa, the Man Upstairs has a funny way of showing it. Just when Tessa starts to lighten up, Ryland's best friend returns. Will the always-irresistible Joey Taylor stifle any hope Ryland has to ignite the dream of a relationship with Tessa?
Life on the Porcelain Edge is a lovely and sweet story of romance and faith--sometimes light and funny but at times, more serious. Tessa Tarrington is working as a ghostwriter in New Orleans writing personal stories of celebrities. Unfortunate events in NOLA and her father's heart attack have her going back to her hometown in Ohio to help him recover. While her life is swirling out of control, she is able to get a job as a substitute teacher at her old high school where she is teaching with an old classmate, Ryland, now a single father of sweet little Emma and a coach after a short career in the NFL. She doesn't have fond memories of him but he has loved her since they were six years old. It was fun to watch the two banter and get to know each other again. The characters are genuine, well developed and likable and will have you pulling for them. Another classmate and Ryland's best friend, Joey, is a professional baseball player, who is in town for a while. He is a funny and charming guy but with his own issues. Tessa had a huge crush on Joey in high school and his attention is a balm to her soul. Her two best friends, sorority sisters Ella and Lily Mae, especially Lil, adds some lighthearted fun to the story. They will all need some faith, trust, love and forgiveness to get them through the issues that life throws them. I really enjoyed the bantering and interactions of the characters and how the author deals with overcoming the problems that crop up with the characters. I received a complimentary copy from the Pelican Book Group through NetGalley to read and review. The opinions are mine only.
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..This book was fun and all over the place, how well we have lol moments, tear moments and chaos moments.. So we meet Tessa was a ghost writer, but unfortunately someone broke into her files and outs her and she loses her livelihood. Then to top that off her dad has a heart attack and she has to go home to care for him where she runs into her old classmate who always had a crush on her but she felt he was a bully. When you think that she and Ryland have something about to happen here comes Joey, and just what is it with him..Anyhoo true entertainment.. Enjoy!
This book had so many layers to it that it was like peeling an onion but a lot more pleasurable. Yes, this is a religious book, in fact, at any time the character may stop and offer up a prayer of hope, thanks, or ask for guidance. It is not about religion but of faith. It does not beat you over the head either. I will tell you it is a very funny story with a lot of heart too. There is a great deal of family, friends, and community conflict to keep this story moving. You see at the ripe old age of six Ryland Jessup falls in love with the new girl in town Tessa Tarrington the preacher’s daughter. She has long blonde hair she wears in pigtails and the greenest eyes you ever saw. The first day he saw her after school he ran all the way home and told his mom he found the girl he was going to marry. He has loved her since forever. She was going to was going to have her sixth birthday party and they were all invited. He asked all his friends what he should get her. He settled on his best friends’ advice. Joey said, “The two best things he loves are his baseball glove and my superhero under ware.” He said because they make him brave against the third graders that picked on them and steal his lunch. Give her under ware she’ll never be scared about nothin’. Then she’ll think of you seven days a week. So, he rides his bike four blocks all alone to a special store and buys them in a tube and everything. He was so excited. The day of though, when she saw the under ware and the kids did and she was so embarrassed she tickled her panties. He thought he was being quiet and trying to help he said in a stage whisper, “PEE PEE, TEE TEE.” All the kids started laughing and pointing and that became her new name and the next thing he knew his mom was dragging him out of the party. After that, she wouldn’t look or talk to him. By junior high, her nickname got shortened to TT but she hated it. She was so glad when she went off to college and could leave the town and her nickname behind her. But her dad has a heart attack and now she and Ryland are working at their high school together. Her being a Sub English teacher and him the football coach. After losing his wife and needing to raise his daughter he thought it was best to move home where he would have the support of his five sisters and his mom. Once he sees her the feelings, he had for her that first day in kindergarten come rushing back. But for Tessa, not the same she is still holding on to her pain of being teased and lets him have it all guns a blazing. But being the football worrier of the NFL that he was he keeps bouncing back. Yet, when she starts to show some interest, he gets spooked. Until his best friend Joey comes into town and he shows interest and even asks Tessa out. Turns out they both had a crush on each other. Ryland is not happy, it’s the case of the snooze you lose. But it doesn’t stop him from being around her at school. Causing her to have mixed emotions and seeing him in a different light. See what has brought them back other than the obvious. If they can co-exist at the same teaching assignment, go to the same church, and both be concerned about her father who had a heart attack. Which causes them both pain and heartache. I give this: 5++++ stars. Provided by netgalley.com. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com.

Life on the Porcelain Edge by C.E. Hilbert is a standalone novel by the Christian novelist, and tells the story of misunderstandings, overcoming obstacles in life and believing that the Lord will see you through.
Tessa Tarrington is at a rough time in her life. Having lost her job as a ghostwriter, she moves back to her hometown to live with her father so she can help him after his heart attack. To top that off she is going back to high school. Even if it is just to substitute teach. A job is a job. But school doesn’t hold any good memories for her, thanks to a certain boy named Ryland Jessup. Who just so happens to teach at the very same school. Let the games begin.
“He’s right. He doesn’t deserve you.” Joey cupped her chin. “But he needs you. Emma needs you. And you need them. Forgiveness is impossible to earn, it has to be given freely.”
This is a very uplifting Christian read. I really enjoyed Tessa as a character, and how her faith is so strong. Ryland was a character just as interesting and likable. His struggles with leaving the NFL, his wife’s death and raising his daughter had me rooting for him. Then his childhood crush come back into his life when, dare I say, he needs her?
Plan to join Tessa and Ryland as they go through a journey of pain, overcoming obstacles, misunderstandings, and just life to maybe just maybe find their happily ever after. To learn that maybe God has a plan for us all, even if we may not understand that plan for many years. Five stars.
Tessa Tarrington was a PK (preacher's kid), and all the rules applied: excel in every school subject; lead the pack to church; and, above all, never tarnish the family name. The problems began at the ripe old age of six when Ryland Jessup gave her a birthday present that followed her forever: days-of-the-week panties. Worse, thanks to his stutter, a new nickname: Pee-Pee Tee-Tee.
And now she had to go back to her hometown, her adult reputation equally shattered. A ghost writer for the rich and famous, she was only supposed to write what the R&F told her to, and she did that. However, they entrusted her sympathetic shoulders with far more than what was ever printed. When those deep secrets began appearing in scandal sheets, her career dove suddenly into the toilet. Fired, she fled to her father's side--after all, he needed her help after his heart attack. Plus, the local school offered her a job as a substitute teacher for an extended period.
If she'd known the first familiar face she'd see would be that of Ryland Jessup in her alma mater's hallway, she might never have accepted the job.
On Ryland's side, it was like a dream come true to see Tessa. She had been his dream girl ever since he first met her--and of course, boys being boys, he didn't know any way to treat the girl except to tease her. Tessa can only hope he's grown up--and Ryland can only hope that she'll finally return his affections.
Dream on.
Oh, please please please buy this book! I swear, you will love it as much as I have. Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. They did not request a positive review, and the opinions and evaluations are my own.
Looking for humorous chick lit with a serious message? Then you definitely need to check out Life on The Porcelain Edge by C. E. Hilbert. Hilbert has created characters who struggle with the same things as real life people — vulnerability, self-doubt, and fear of rejection — while entertaining the reader and presenting the hope and grace that is promised by God. This charming novel was a delight to read. Although main characters Tessa and Ryland are the ages of my children, I could definitely identify with their dreams and fears.
Tessa returns to her hometown in shame. Her life seems to be circling the bowl — lost job and lost reputation. Faced with her high school tormentor, this self-acknowledged runner is in for a period of growth or stagnation — her choice.
I loved the characters in Life on The Porcelain Edge, especially precociously cute Emma. They could easily be the boy or girl next door, or your nosy neighbor, or best friend. Hilbert has a way of making them fun and funny and true to life. They also grapple with real life issues that go to the core of who we are. In addition, this novel is a wonderfully written romance — there’s plenty of chemistry between Tessa and Ryland. The novel is also firmly grounded in faith, presenting truth to both the characters and the reader.
A quick read, Life on The Porcelain Edge is no puff piece. And for fans of Hilbert, you will recognize characters from her other books. Don’t worry if you haven’t read anything by this author; this one is a standalone. But don’t be surprised when you want to read more!
Recommended.
Audience: adults.

C. E. Hilbert takes her readers back to Gibson’s Run for another story full of snappy humor and a couple learning to forgive and find real love.
Tessa Tarrington was finally making it on her own – huge loft apartment at deep discount rent, successful job as a ghost writer for celebrities, and close friends to share her free time – when her safe life is flushed. Someone discovered her ghost writing job and stole several in-progress works from her apartment – effectively making Tessa unemployed and untouchable in the world of background writers. Then her “friend” Bobbi Jo swoops in to taunt Tessa in faux compassionate words, also hinting she might be taking Tessa’s job. Additionally, Tessa receives word her father has suffered a heart attack and needs her back home in Gibson Run. Returning home seems the best option at the moment and she is given a bit of hope as there is a substitute English teacher job available for the semester. But going home means facing all her worst memories and the one person who is responsible for the start of them all – Ryland Jessup. Ryland told his mother when he was six years old that he was going to marry Tessa Tarrington. The problem is, Ryland’s innocent birthday present of “days of the week” underwear for Tessa’s sixth birthday caused her to be so embarrassed she wet her pants. To further add to her humiliation, Ryland’s childhood stutter created a despised nickname of “Pee-Pee T. T.” when he tried to whisper quietly to her about the problem. Carrying the burden of that cruel name all the way through high school, Tessa harbored a deep resentment towards Ryland and his best friend Joey – believing they are responsible for keeping the name going. But as Tessa begins to get to know Ryland again, she discovers that he is not the monster she had created in her mind. For one thing, he defends her in front of the sports team players who thought her class would be an easy A if they caused enough trouble. Ryland is infamous for his Saturday Suicide Sessions – suicide drills for 2 hours straight – for any high school sports player who gets into trouble. Ryland uses the exhaustion of the players to teach respect and discipline – of their teachers and themselves, so the players can grow in more than size and talent. Overhearing Ryland’s teaching moments, Tessa realizes that he is a kind, compassionate and loving man who truly wants those around him to be their absolute best. Add to this his deliberate and careful care of his daughter Emma, and Ryland is quickly working his way beneath Tessa’s heart walls and becoming a man she could love. But Tessa is not the only one who needs help with forgiveness – Ryland is still carrying the hurt of his deceased wife’s unhappiness and betrayal. It will take Tessa being strong enough to show Ryland his deepest hurts before they can both move into forgiveness and lasting love. And to all this drama, Ms. Hilbert adds the wonderful character of Lily Mae Benton ( a Cajun force of nature) and another love interest for Tessa – her highschool crush Joey Taylor. Tessa’s life quickly becomes flooded with new understanding of how much she really was and is liked by all who know her, and that she is capable of much more than she has let herself believe. Ms. Hilbert took a situation that many have found themselves in and interjected humor, forgiveness and love to show that God does not leave His children in safe situations if there is an opportunity for them to be stretched and grown by hardship. There were so many great moments of spiritual learning included in this book that I couldn’t begin to name them all. The concepts of bitterness, resentment and forgiveness are deep and hard to convey without sounding harsh or unconcerned. Ms. Hilbert did a wonderful job of telling the truth in a real way but making sure those who heard the truth also knew they were loved in their problem. Additionally, as I am a lover of words, I was thrilled to see how much grammar and alliteration were used throughout the story to bring moments of laughter and stress relief. Lily Mae’s way of using alliteration was just so entertaining; I felt like she and I would be good friends were she a real person. Ms. Hilbert’s way of making the characters of her story real made this book one I loved to read and one I will certainly re-read. I will most certainly share this book with others and might also purchase copies for others soon. I look forward to Ms. Hilbert’s next works and hope she will bring another story out in the very near future.
I received this E-book free of charge from Pelican Book Group in exchange for a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation from this company for this review.
“Tessa Tarrington’s life was in the toilet. Job? FIRED. Dad? HEART ATTACK. Current residence? CHILDHOOD BEDROOM. Love life? NON- EXISTENT. Her life was swirling in the bowl, just waiting for the ultimate flush”.
After the “Terrible Awful Day”, Tessa Tarrington escapes from the southern charm of New Orleans to her small- town Ohio roots. What is she running from? Is she running straight into trouble and unresolved angst from her past?
After someone breaks into her apartment in New Orleans and steals notes about her clients, Tessa is fired from her job. Then her father has a health crisis and she flees to her hometown. In Gibson’s Run, she accepts a job as a substitute English teacher. She encounters her nemesis, Ryland Jessup, the boy who taunted her all through school. Ryland is a widower with a four year old daughter, Emma. He is now a High School Athletic Coach after an injury sidelined him from an NFL career.
This story is filled with colorful characters such as Sissy Jenkins, the town gossip; Joey Taylor, Ryland’s best friend and a professional baseball star and Tessa’s sorority sisters. Lily Mae, Ella and Bobbi Ann. Tessa’s Dad and Ryland’s housekeeper/nanny provide the voice of Biblical reason.
Having grown up as a Preacher’s Kid, Tessa knows her scriptures but she needs to be reminded how to make them practical. Ryland is a Christian and an upstanding man. He has just been confronted with boatload of circumstances and he is having a hard time coping with them. Can they get past the drama of their childhood memories?
This book is humorous and at the same time deals with some very trying situations. I really like how the author portrays four year old Emma and her relationship with her father. I gave this book FIVE STARS because I enjoyed it on many different levels. It was very realistic. It made me laugh and root for Tessa and Ryland.
*I received this book from the author for a book club discussion. I was not expected to write a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
Look at me, stumbling into a series not labeled as a series again. XP Sorry, just had to get that out of the way. Okay, on to the book itself...
Contrary to appearances, I liked Ryland from the beginning and felt bad for the way his long-time crush on Tessa had been misinterpreted by her. I felt bad for Tessa but did appreciate the way that she was able to start allowing her ideas to be redefined after the first few encounters. I liked their relationship, once it got going, and I enjoyed most of their friends and family. However, some of what happened near the end confused and frustrated me. There were several embarrassing references, particularly around an embarrassing childhood gift/incident, that I would have preferred not to dwell on, but the romance was kept pretty clean, and I loved Tessa's dad playing the intimidating dad/pastor role. XD Overall, I enjoyed it, even if parts of it weren't my favorite.
Tessa Tarrington Ryland Jessup, a former football star, falls in love with Tessa Tarrington, the pastor’s daughter and ghost writer, and his plan to give her the perfect gift to show his love backfires on him. At the age of six Ryland buys Tessa Days of the Week panties. Tessa is mortified, and she believes he is playing a cruel joke on her. This expression of love brings about a nickname for Tessa that will follow her into adulthood. Tessa leaves for college and she stays away until she is falsely accused. When she returns, Tessa begins working as a substitute teacher where Ryland teaches. Ryland tries to get close to Tessa, but she is leery of him at first. Tessa has not forgiven Ryland for the emotional pain she has suffered. Ryland and Tessa start going out as friends. Then Ryland’s friend enters the picture. Ryland becomes insecure because his friend, an athletic star, not only returns, but he knows Tessa had a crush on his buddy in high school. Tessa starts to date Ryland’s buddy. However, she realizes she is reliving a high school fantasy, and she has fallen for Ryland. Then, a story breaks about Ryland’s dead wife. Ryland falsely accuses Tessa of leaking the story because the only two people he told was his mother and Tessa. After Tessa is eventually vindicated and the culprit is caught, Ryland begs for forgiveness, and Tessa accepts his apology. Life on the Porcelain Edge is about pain, overcoming obstacles, and forgiveness. Life on the Porcelain Edge shows no matter what is going on in your life God has a plan for you.
OK, so in all fairness I’m not all that into romance novels but I’ve been reading a lot of thrillers lately and needed a break! The title of this book drew me in and I’m glad it did! The fact that it was a Christian book did not bother me and actually it was quite refreshing to read about good, honest, caring people without a lot of hidden agendas! The romance wasn’t “in your face” and it was a pleasure not to have to read a bunch of swear words or heavy sex scenes! This book delivered exactly what it said it would an more!
The book is funny, has endearing characters and honest dialogue. I did cringe at some of the descriptions “his eyes bowed” because they distracted from the story and had me wondering where it came from. And, no, they aren’t southern terms either - at least not in my part of Louisiana - maybe from Ohio? That was the only thing that bugged me about this novel. I’m glad I had the opportunity to read this book and I look forward to reading another by this author. For a first time author I think the book is great and certainly shows that the author has great promise!
Overall, I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did since it was out of my genre, a romance and had a Christian theme. I’m very glad however that I was captured by the title and enjoyed it immensely! I received a copy of Life on the Porcelain Edge through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to BooksGoSocial and C.E Hilbert for the opportunity.

I'm on the porcelain edge is about Tessa Tarrington and her life – her life was circling the drain, she was fired from her job, her dad had a heart attack, she lives in her childhood bedroom and her love life just doesn't exist. Her apartment was broken into and things stolen including her four pieces of work and two contracts were stolen and they were sold to the highest bidder now her only anonymity as a writer is gone. She has no privacy going down the street. Do you want me to go on? The poor Woman , but GOD is with her and can turn serious lemon into the best lemonade can't HE? Well does HE do that for Gertrude? Does her life get better or worse? I hope you find out. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

C.E. Hilbert has penned an enjoyable story with a well conceived plot . This is a fun read with well developed, interesting characters.
There were moments that I laughed out loud and I was grateful that I wasn't in a public place and there were moments that were more emotional. It really is a roller-coaster of a story and was different from my usual tastes (as it featured religion) however despite this I am glad that I read this story because I genuinely enjoyed accompanying Tessa on her journey through disasters, sadness and happiness. I feel that the balance between humour and more serious moments was well balanced and well combined.
I will be completely honest and say that had I realised just how religious this book was then I would have given it a wide berth. However lovers of Romance, humour and religious fiction will love this story.
I was given a copy of this book by the Publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
I enjoyed this book! Tessa had everything when disaster struck. Someone robbed her apartment and her father had a heart attack. She goes home to care for her dad and gets a job teaching in the same high school she attended as a student. There she sees her old nemesis, Ryland, who is now her colleague. He was in the NFL but now he is a single father who dotes on his daughter, Emma. Tessa befriends the child but remains skeptical about the father.
And then there's Joey, Ryland's best friend. Tessa had a crush on him in high school, but he became a well-known baseball player and was completely out of her orbit. Now he's back in her hometown and dating her.
Tessa wishes she could get back to writing, but her career as a ghostwriter crashed when her apartment was robbed of all her notes. Can she ever go back to the work she loved? And does she really love Joey?
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Tessa Terrington's life is down the toilet. After losing her job and her reputation, Tessa is once again back home to the place she couldn't wait to leave behind. All she wanted was to find clarity and take care of her father. She never expected to bump into the one person who has made her miserable her entire life....Ryland.
Ryland remembers being in love with Tessa when he was six years old. Now a widower and father, he never expected to see her again. But the problem is, Tessa's in love with his best friend Joey and that complicates things.
This book was enjoyable and suitable for all ages.
I loved the cover on this humorous book as well as I love this story about Tessa Tarrington’s life spiraling out of control. It had everything I like–humor, romance, a life lesson and wonderful characters. C.E. Hilbert has a gift for writing romcom. Tessa was a well-drawn character and a match for Ryland who has been in love with her since childhood. I enjoyed watching her journey as she returned home where she’d been known at T.T. after an unfortunate accident…It was easy to root for Ryland even though I really liked Joey and hope he gets his own book
This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
First off I love the cover. That is what grabbed my attention. I needed a light romantic read as my genre is usually mystery/thrillers and horror. So this was a nice in between novel. I found Tessa to be relatable, at times she was so me. I have had those embarrassing and awkward moments as I am sure every girl has. At times I found the novel dragged on a bit but was still a fun and light read.
I had high hopes for this book. The cover suggested a fun read.
Well, I admit to being a bit dissapointed. Tessa was judgemental and unforgiving. It was irritating how she harped on about how bad Ryland is and how untrustworthy. He was equally irritating with all his stereotypical views.
This book had a lot of potential, but somehow I feel it has been missed.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I am a new reader of this author and I can honestly say that this was a fun book to read. I enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the inspirational message.. There is humor, romance and a bit of a mystery too. These are all ingredients to make a good read in my opinion. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.
A sweet Christian romance with lovable characters and a heroine who is trying to pick herself up after life knocks her down. Thank you NetGalley for the eARC, and it's my hope that there'll be better formatting when the final ebook version is released for ease of reading.
Great relatable story about life. I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest review. Very true-to-life story with all the emotions. I found this book to be well-written and a fun read.
Life on the Porcelain Edge is the first book I have read by C.E. Hilbert. Set eight years after high school, Tessa Tarrington is back in school as a teacher, where her worst nightmare is also teaching. Learning to get along with the enemy and finally dating her high school crush brings about some laughs and romance. I enjoyed reading this book!
I received this book from NetGalley and all opinions are my own.

Thank you Netgalley, Pelican Book Group, and BooksGoSocial for letting me review book!! ^_^
Before Thoughts: Oh I do love a good contemporary romance. And it has comedy too if I read the reviews correctly. I think I shall have fun seeing these two characters get together hehe!! ^_^
But if you have smut I will take a point off. (You know unless it's good, contributes something, is maybe funny/awkward because it's a romance between two who used to dislike each other. Make it genuine if it's in the story or don't add at all is what I say lol xD)
Though based on reviews this luckily features no smut. Praise the heavens haha!! xD

Every once in a great while a book comes along that sweeps you off your feet and has you rolling with laughter, then crying your eyes out because you feel so deeply what the characters are going through. For me, this was that book. I'm not sure I can even put into words how much of a roller coaster this book takes you and through all the emotions of Tessa feeling over and over like her life just keeps getting a new flush to make things worse, even when things seem to be looking up.
Tessa was a ghost writer for the rich and famous. But someone broke in, stole her files and is slowly leaking info to the public and she's been outed and fired. Her father recently had a heart attack and her only option is to return home to care for him and get a job at her old high school where a former classmate and bully also works. How could things possibly get any worse?
If you need a bit of humor, a twisty-turvy romance, and a good cry, then read this book. I'm definitely going to go look up anything else Hilbert has written and keep her on my "to watch for" list of authors.
