High School student Morgan Fae is beginning to question her sanity. After witnessing a weird incident involving a werewolf, a substitute teacher/possible vampire, and a thermos of tomato juice, she is taken to the Magical Beings' Rehabilitation Center. The MBRC is an organization that strives to integrate magical beings into human society and hides itself in Chicago’s Union Station. It’s also a massive secret, and Morgan’s accidental initiation into it breaks every rule the place has.

Until MBRC officials can figure out how to undo the damage, Morgan is given a part-time job at the center so its residents can learn from the her. (Turns out average humans are a pretty rare teaching resource!) Between private tutoring sessions and being used as a human encyclopedia, Morgan befriends the pooka—a shape-shifting fairy who is too handsome for his own good—and may or may not have started a cyclops business revolution.

But when its finally time to leave, will Morgan be able to give up her new friends and return to the mundane?

VAMPIRES DRINK TOMATO JUICE is a humorous take on the urban paranormal world. It is filled with magic, adventure, a touch of romance, friendship, and the scariest place of all: High school. (Previously published under the title: My Life at the MBRC)

I honestly don't know how to rate this, so I'm not going to try. It was fun, funny, and weird--which is a pretty good trifecta in my book. Read in between writing spurts to give myself some off time, and it was perfect for taking my mind away from what I was actually MEANT to be doing.

GREAT!! But I got some quibbles. Typos, e.g. shotty instead of shoddy. LOVE POLYGON. Mary-Sue-ism... BLATANT MARY-SUE-ISM.

Extremely funny!!!

Dying for the next one!!!

*Warning: may contain minor spoilers* I am very happy that I decided to pick this book up. I loved the characters, I loved the story, and I LOVED how often it was able to make me laugh! Okay, okay there were a few things that I didn't particularly like, but I think that the good stuff overules the bad stuff. Time for a list!

Bad stuff that kinda made me wince/roll my eyes

• There was a love triangle, of course. Scratch that, if there was a love ANYTHING it was more of a PENTAGON than a triangle. I kid you not, there were four guys chasing Morgan, FOUR, give or take one. I'm still slightly confused as to who was actually chasing her and who was just a friend.

• I still don't really understand how tomato juice of all things helps vampires quench their thirst for blood, but hey, what do I know?

• The clichéness of the M.B.R.C. Weird, I know, but everyone's trying to turn fairy tales and myths upside down in an attempt to do some thing new, and ironically, it's gotten kind of old.

• There was some minor language that I didn't really notice or bother about, but I felt that I should mention it.

•Highschool drama. Need I say more?

•I didn't particularly like that Morgan lied to Frank about the flea collar, and I have this horrible sense of foreboding that it's going to come back to bite her (sorry, I just can't help myself when it comes to bad puns. :D).

Good stuff that I looovved

•The characters in general are FANTASTIC. I loved all of them except for the few that I loved AND wanted to punch.

•There was a scene in here that made me want to dance for joy. Believe it or not,
a teenager actually chose her longtime friend over a boy. *jaw drops in astonishment*
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA OF HOW HAPPY THAT MAKES ME???
Okay, basically, it's that time old thing where Morgan has a crush on this boy Brett, but Brett has a crush on Fran, Morgan's best friend. Morgan, of course, is completely clueless about the whole thing until she hears said friends fighting about their nonexistent relationship and Fran comes storming out of the room and sees Morgan.
Does Morgan throw a hissy fit and start screaming that Fran has betrayed her and so on and so forth? No. She realizes that Fran's friendship is more important to her than dating Brett, and she apologizes for not realizing it sooner. SHE APOLOGIZES!!! WHERE HAS THIS BOOK BEEN ALL MY LIFE???

• Doggy.

• I know that I complained about this earlier, but the love pentagon is hilarious!

• I love the humor in here. It's constant, it makes fun of Twilight at times, and I do actually like the cliché-because-it's-not-cliché thing

• Morgan may be the best protagonist that I've run across, and she's definitely the funniest and my favorite.

Basically, I loved pretty much everything in this book! It's got humor, hot pink dragons, stuffy elves, Arabian Night's elves, adorable Doodles, fleabitten werewolves, likeable antagonists, techy centaurs, mafia goblins, love pentagons, and a hemophobic vampire.
Did I mention the frying pan?

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I loved Morgan! After learning that her substitute teacher is a vampire, and the new student a werewolf, Morgan is taken to the Magical Beings Rehabilitation Center to have her memory wiped. The siren who can do it, is out of the office for a few weeks, so in the meantime, Morgan helps out at the rehabilitation center and learns that everything popular media has taught her about magical beings was lies!
-vampires can be chubby and bald
-werewolves are scrawny, not tan and buff
-cyclops are smart
And the list goes on...

Well this is YA (which is not my jam as of late) so I take everything with a grain of salt.

IMO the book was a bit cheesy and goofy- and Morgan was a major Mary Sue that everyone fell in love with and fawned over. She was also somehow the savior of magical beings through little to no effort, and crushed on a majority of the male characters

(PS how old is Devin that he's flirting with a 16 year old girl and calling it 'robbing the cradle'? Me no like.)

description

But despite all that I did have fun reading the wacky that was this plot, and I enjoyed some of the...I guess...anti-trope things she said like

"Creeptastic, that was the only way to describe it. My fellow females, NEVER think that some guy popping up in your room, uninvited, in the middle of the night is anything but disturbing."

"...but let’s get real, ladies. When you’re kidnapped, it’s not time to be romantic; it’s time to be practical."

I also did have a good laugh for most of the book-and might read on to the next.

[May 2023 Update: After rereading this book with my family I’ve decided to drop my rating from 4 to 3 stars just because that while funny and entertaining the story doesn’t actually have a plot and parts do seriously drag which makes it more of a 3 star then 4 for me.]

Original Review: This book is so much fun and many times I was inwardly laughing at things said or the situations our main girl Morgan gets herself into!

You can tell this was one of the author’s first books as the beginning did take a bit for me to get into and the story also meanders at times though with the tropes and ideas of magical creatures being flipped on their heads at every turn (vampires who pass out at the sight of blood, anyone?) the story never dragged or was boring as I questioned what Morgan would encounter or be thrust into time and time again.

Like all this author’s books the characters sparkle and are both funny and endearing (while also annoying in some cases) all at the same time. Morgan is a regular high school girl with a lot of sass and bravery whose rather “boring” skill set of just being a human is almost a superpower in her new magical world which I thought was a super fun way to make us normal people feel like we can make change as well as those more “qualified.”

As always the side characters are amazing and hilarious (my faves are Frey and Madeline) though I wanted to slap and strangle a few of the guys at various points throughout the story. And for those who hate this trope like I do, there does appear to be a potential love triangle being set up by the end of the book, but we’ll just have to wait and see how things go though I certainly hope not.

Such a fun story, and I’m curious to see where Morgan’s adventures take her next!

‼️Content‼️

Violence: fighting with weapons and hand to hand (not detailed); injuries and blood (not detailed); holes are blown into the walls of a building

Sexual: guys are called hot; a guy centaur puts a magical glamour over himself to hide in the human world but it accidentally makes him look like a human girl

Other: vampires, werewolves, and other magical creatures/beings; magic; a character is hypnotized to remove their memories; characters are kidnapped/tied up/knocked out

Are wholesome slice-of-lifey paranormals a genre yet? It should totally be a genre (I might have mentioned this before, but it cannot be said often enough).
This is a great example of what I think this probably-non-existent genre should be: fun, angst-free, filled with silly shenanigans and wholesome paranormals being fascinated/confounded by humans.
What bothers me a little though is the MC being 16, which I understand was necessary for the school drama, but it felt weird what with the pseudo-harem of immortal (?) dudes.

Last week was not my week. I wasn't feeling well. I wasn't doing great. I noticed that everything was too much and that I still had the feeling I had to do more. I luckily have a few really great therapists helping me to navigate these uncomfortable oceans and I decided to give myself something extra, a nice pick me up. Since I'm almost through the K. M. Shea books I owned I wanted to start a new series by her and these books seemed to be exactly what I needed right now.

Yesterday I could pick them up and I started reading right away and quite soon I was leaning back and enjoying myself. The book is light hearted and is playing around with supernaturals and their stereotypes. And although the book is funny it's never forced funny. There are a lot of elements that made me laugh out loud and there were quite a few silly adventures, but it never became cringe because the characters took themselves quite serious.

That's the true power of the story. Although it's all very funny to read about it's not always funny for the characters involved. The unicorn scared of humans was endearing and hilarious, but to him his fear was a very serious and real problem. The vampire who hates tomato juice and is not allowed to drink blood is dramatic, but to him it's a very serious and real problem worth the drama. Our heroine all of a sudden teaching a class on humanity is funny, but for her it becomes her new reality.

I have to admit that the overarching plot is not present at all. I also have no idea if there is a romantic plot and which guy she's gonna end up with (I assume this is not a reverse harem, but it could be). But if you're looking for an entertaining read, a book playing around with all kinds of supernaturals and them learning everything about being human and a cozy low stakes, urban fantasy series, you will absolutely enjoy this book as much as I did.

This was a fun read but it did have some issues. I rounded up with a very generous 4 star rating. This was probably closer to a 3 star.

I have read other books by this author but I can tell this is her first published or at the very least one from very early in her career. It has classic ameteur writing tells that many first time self published authors use. Everyone exclaims, proclaims, espouses etc, etc instead of just saying things. Do you notice this too with newbie writers? New authors, some advice-it's much less noticeable to have your characters just go "blah, blah blah" said heroine. "Blah, blah blah," replied the hero.

Also, there was a serious overuse of adjectives and adverbs when these characters were exclaiming, proclaiming or whatever. We readers don't need nor want an adjective each time. Again, simply have your characters say things instead of noisily proclaim, rudely grouse, jauntily espouse etc etc. Your readers will still get what you're going for with much more subtlety and you won't be hitting us over the head so much with things that I promise we can infer from the story.

However, with those quibbles aside, it was a fun story. It didn't have a ton of plot but went from one madcap adventure to the next. You can see the promise that this author has developed with her current writing here in a raw form.

This was a very unique story it was a funny and very entertaining story I loved everything about it. I loved the characters especially Morgan she is down to earth takes most things in stride she is also fiery and doesn't mince words. Though she can be vulnerable and has her moments when it comes to other things I do like the love interest Devin the Pooka he is very interesting to read about. I loved the plot it starts with Morgan knowing nothing but then stumbling into it when she sees her vampire teacher and werewolf classmate fighting so they at first want to erase her memory but then see how good she is at teaching clueless supernatural's and everything goes from there. I am looking forward to reading more soon.

I am a big fan of KM Shea, but this book didn't really do it for me. I loved the idea, I loved the friendship between the characters (especially Fran) and I liked the world development. I thought the dialogue was a little stilted, the crushes on four (five? I lost count of how many handsome but annoying guys there were who were potential love interests) were cliche, and while I liked her odd jobs in the clinic and the information desk, I thought the plot slowed down a lot when she started teaching/tutoring.

HOWEVER I could have overlooked all of that except for one thing: When she gets back at Devon by falsely claiming that he touched her inappropriately. This is terrible! DON'T DO THIS, KIDS! False accusations of assault make it harder for real victims to be believed. This is not a joke or a prank or a way to get back at someone. The fact that other characters admired her for pretending to be a victim to get a guy in trouble made me livid. What a terrible thing to teach to YA readers! Women have a hard enough time being believed when they report assault without other people making false accusations. Don't make it worse by presenting this as a way to get back at a guy.

Ok, IT HAS PLOTHOLES big as my cats' stomach and is very silly, but it's so readable!

MC is an instant "reader fall in love" type - she's resolute, integrate and smart, even if she's 16. Other characters are nice too. Adventures here are so absurd sometimes it's hard to believe, but amusing and fun.

I had so much fun reading this that I can forgive plot holes, character-related-plot holes and such. It's just silly, nice, feel-good read :)

It was fine. The plot … wasn’t there. It was more like a slice of life while working at the MBRC. The characters were fun though! A couple moments made me laugh out loud.

CW: There were a handful of swear words, a playboy character, and a character gets kidnapped.

OMG, why didn't I start this book sooner? I've read and enjoyed a few of K.M. Shea's other books. I had this on my list to read eventually. It just didn't sound like my normal thing. Boy was I wrong. I LOVED this book. I love Morgan. I thought I'd be upset at how easily she accepted everything, except that's just her personality. She just rolls with the punches for the most part. She's amazing and doesn't take crap from anyone. Yet this isn't one of those books where she's some normal girl, turned super hero or something. She's a real girl who found out about this crazy world and adapted and fits in perfectly. I loved this book. It's funny and clever. I can't wait to read the rest of them. I can't say enough good things about this one.

The story was somewhat entertaining, despite being a bit too campy. It tried maybe just a little too hard to be ridiculous and funny. Somewhere at the point where apparently a whole bunch of magical beings were incredibly interested in listening to lectures about the nerd/ geek/ cool/ etc. cliques in human high school, my suspension of disbelief snapped.

Additionally, this is one of those books where apparently the whole world of various ages and species is all inexplicably panting after the heroine. I initially thought it was a love triangle, which was annoying enough, but it's now a... love octagon? I lost count.

This book was amazing.Nothing like the romance novels that can be annoying. The part that hooked me the most is probably how funny she is around the people at the Magical Beings Rehabilitation Center.( or MBRC)
That's not the only reason though. All of the other characters are extremely well defined and detailed. I highly recommend this book to people who like funny books with a little bit of romance. Over all this is a great book and a lot of people will like it.

I had a problem with a few bits -spoiler alert

The main issue that I have with this book is that the 16 year old heroine lives at home with her family but she takes a job after school and seemingly never tells them where she is or who she’s with. She takes the train into the big city by herself, and she makes it sound like a regular occurrence. think she should change the heroine to be in college, because I just didn’t believe that she was 16.

High school and mystical beings bring complications to Morgan's life as four boys try to win her and her best friend steals her crush. Forget what you think you know about vampires, fairies, goblins, werewolves etc. because the story books got it all wrong!

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

"My Life at the MBRC" is such a fun read. It was exactly what I was in the mood to read.

It had great banter and humorous moments. Morgan, the main character, may be one of K.M. Shea's wittiest characters! The scenes between her, Devin, and Frey were especially funny.

Besides its great humor, I also really liked all of the friendships in this book. Morgan has a great group of friends. There are never any dull moments when they are all together :)

The only area that lacked at all was the romance. [Spoiler] There is a budding romance between Morgan and Devin that starts around the middle of the book. I'm not the biggest fan of Devin in this book, so I didn't enjoy the romantic parts of this book [End of Spoiler].

I think this book, for the most part, is a fun read and is one I would recommend.

Read this

I'm confess I had stuff to do today, I just kept putting it off so I could read another page! I have been out of high school for years and thought I would not even get though the first couple of chapters before I was bored. I couldn't quit laughing as well as flipping pages! I just can't wait to find out if Morgan ends up with Devlin. Oh and what Frey will do next! I about fell out of my chair when he was watching Morgan sleep so they could talk!

Read the omnibus sample, which was several chapters from the first book in the series.

DNF because I just couldn't look past all the deeply ick elements. The main character seems like a judgey, un-self-aware, boring person. The Dr character concerns me - he seems rude and condescending about all his "patients". The term "rehabilitation" seems... xenophobic is the wrong word, but I can't find the right one.

There is a naivete about this book which too me a while to get my head around. If I had to guess I would say these books are meant for young adults. The heroine is a sophomore.in high school who.stumbles on the existence of magical beings. There are a lot.of pop culture references (e.g. Twilight series) but there is.also a great deal of humour, there are three magical beings.vying for Morgan's affections and.I suppose future.books will show us which one she.chooses............
