A Forever Home #3

Saving Parker

Rate this book
After years of abuse and neglect, Parker is found chained in a junk-filled backyard after a drug bust. The little guy’s terrified of people. Officer Ned Barringer brings him to a nearby shelter for medical care. When Ned learns how hard it is for dogs like Parker to get adopted, he must do more. He’s also instantly taken with Kim Harper, one of the shelter managers. She offers to train Parker for free. Ned instantly accepts. That same day, he meets his next-door neighbor, a ten-year-old boy named Russell. Russell is hiding a black-eye, compliments of two bullies at school. This angers Ned. He suffered the same fate as a child. It’s the main reason he became a cop. But what can he do? When a near-death tragedy occurs, what role might Parker play in bringing these three lives together?

Dan Walsh is known for page-turning, character driven novels. Fans of Dan's other novels, as well as dog-lovers everywhere will especially enjoy Saving Parker.

Isn't this cover absolutely adorable and beautiful?! 😍

I'm not into Christian romance, I think it was my 1st one and it was much better than I expected. Not that I don't believe in God, but I don't read Bible every day. So maybe I had false interpretation of this genre?

Anyway. The chapter's from Parker's POV were the best! Such a sweetie!!!

I don't think I can curse in this review, so I try to rephrase my lines with f*** word.

Dear God, please punish animal abusers and bullies!!!

The book wasn't steamy, but it had many good human messages.

Parker, my love!!! 💖💕💖

The reason I love this series so much is one of the P.O.V's is in D.O.G.

Parker is abused. Officer Ned Barringer takes the dog to the shelter and meets Kim Haper, who offers to train Parker.

The same day Officer Barringer finds out his next-door neighbor, Russel, is getting bullied at school.

This is a story of three people, plus Parker and the effects upon their lives.

I really enjoyed this book. It brought memories of younger years when older and bigger students bullied. While reading, I found myself emotionally moved.

There was insight into the bullying problem while addressing animal cruelty. Very good read. It makes me want to get a dog.

To be honest, I didn't read it all. I didn't even get half way through before I came to a scene that made me roll my eyes. Lady gets in car and guy immediately says she smells good. Then they proceed to talk about how each of them smell. Huh? Oh, brother! That's when I started skipping. I would have put it completely down because the writing really was kind of dull much of the time (too many words that weren't needed), but I wanted to find out what happened in one certain story line. I'm glad I didn't try to read the whole thing. It was long. The story was focused on animal abuse and bullying. It could have been interesting, but it really wasn't.
I was also not too happy when the cop (main character) doesn't even think about taking pictures of an abused dog when he's talking about adding charges of animal abuse to a drug dealer's other charges. A neighbor lady has to come up the the idea and do it.
And can I just say how dumb some people were to stand near a bank door filming when they know a robbery is taking place inside?

Anyway, this was not my kind of book. It was "Christian" in that they quoted a few Bible verses, prayed over their food, and said they read their Bible every morning. I might have missed some things since I didn't read it all.
There was one euphamisem in the part I read.

This is a heartwarming story built around Parker, a dog who gets a second chance at a furever home. Abused by his former owner, a drug dealer, Parker is rescued by Ned, a police officer. If you’re worried about animal abuse, don’t be. The neglect Parker endures happens before the story starts, which makes this about his learning to trust people again, and his journey to recovery.

Ned is a great character, strong, and l likeable. He decides to take a chance on fostering/adopting Parker, and through that decision connects with Kim, who works at an animal shelter. He also has new neighbors—a single mom and her sixth-grade son, Russell, who becomes a target for bullies at school.

The story shifts between Parker’s recuperation, Ned and Kim juggling emerging romantic feelings, and Ned helping Russell find a way to stand up to the bullies. There is nothing earth-shattering in the plot, just clean, wholesome feel-good entertainment. Think Hallmark with a light Christian theme. Although this is the third book in a series, it reads fine as a standalone. I got the impression some of the characters cross over from book to book, but I had zero difficulty following the story. If I hadn’t been aware beforehand, I wouldn’t even realize Saving Parker is book three in a series.

I enjoyed the humbleness and simplicity of the tale, to the extent that I plan to seek out other titles in this series. If you enjoy reading books about dogs, and a story that leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling, you’ll find Saving Parker enchanting. 4.5 Stars.

Another Great Read

Dan Walsh has done it again, told a touching story to span the generations from Jr. High through Grandma leaning on her cane. Although one of the primary characters is a nerdy boy of middle-school age, the story grabs the reader and hangs on. Throughout the ups and downs of the boy Russell, the cop Ned, the dog Parker, and Kim, the Humane Society worker, the reader pulls for them and hopes for a good outcome. Will they get it? You'll have to buy the book to find out.

I just want to say how great this story and the two preious ones in the series were. I just love the characters in the books - they come over as so real. I love the subject matter of dogs being rescued and being fostered/re-homed with such care, love and attention. I love the underlying Christian ethos which so well demonstrates what Christian faith is about (wish we saw more of it here in the UK). I even like the romance portrayed especially as it never majors on hot sex scenes. I just wish that this was not the last in the series. Dan you should write more from the same settings.

Animal cruelty and animal shelters come to the fore in Dan Walsh’s Saving Parker. But a neglected dog isn’t the only one in need of help, and human bullying also plays an important role in the tale. Lessons in the care of a badly treated dog are very convincingly told through the interactions of characters, and there’s lots for readers to learn. Meanwhile there are relationships to be sorted out, blossoming romance, the fear that goes with knowing a gun-carrying cop, and the terrors that haunt a bullied child.

This novel offers plenty of wisdom in how to help wounded children as well as wounded pets, though most bullied kids may not be as self-aware as young Russell. Lots of discussion (should cops be involved in bullying, for example) slows the story down. Lots of internal pondering (what will it cost to fall in love, and where does God’s plan fit in) begs the reader to share the beliefs of characters. PTSD adds yet another topic to the mix. And then there are guns…

My cultural background is clearly different from the author’s. I enjoyed the story, the parallels between bullied child and pet, and the building of relationships. Faith, for the most part, is fairly low-key and natural to the characters. But I much preferred learning how to care for a dog over learning how to shoot a gun. So many ideas packed into one novel made the story a good slow read for dog-and-Bible-lovers with plenty of time.

Disclosure: I got it on a deal because I loved the dog on the cover.

Loved this book !

This is the 3rd book in this series and I have enjoyed all of them so much! I love that this book is told from Parker ( dog🐶) POV along with the hero (Ned), heroine (Kim) and young boy Russell. There is a sweet romantic storyline along with a tough storyline about Russell being bullied. Ned’s kind heart really drew poor abused dog Parker to him and I loved seeing everyone get their much deserved HEA! I highly recommend this sweet, compelling book!

Officer Ned Barringer encounters a small dog named Parker when responding to a police call. Parker has clearly been abused and neglected, and Ned wants to help. He takes him for medical treatment, where he learns that it is difficult for dogs like Parker to get adopted, so he decides to take him in. Kim Harper, manager and trainer at the local shelter, agrees to help with the training and transition. She has no interest in getting involved with someone in such a dangerous career field as Ned. In addition to helping Parker, Ned wants to help his neighbor Russell, who is being bullied at school. Will Parker be the link which connects them all?

This is the third installment in the “Forever Home” series, and I think it’s the best one yet. Walsh skillfully addresses some difficult topics, such as animal cruelty/neglect and bullying, which does create some heartbreaking scenes. The story is told in alternating POV’s, including Parker’s (the dog). Some situations wrap up a bit too quickly, such as the resolution to Russell’s problem, but the approach taken to address bullying is a solid one which could provide a helpful option for some children. As a fan of the Karate Kid movies, I really enjoyed the references to the movie and Mr. Miyagi. There are a number of tender scenes, particularly between Ned and Parker. The theme of trusting God for guidance is woven throughout.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I was not required to leave a positive review.

When his owner is arrested, Parker is found in the yard, neglected, ill, hurting. Police Officer Ned feels sorry for the little pup and decides to enter the "foster parent" programme of the local animal rescue organisation. The dog trainer, Kim, is quite attracted to both Parker and Ned...
This... this was such a lovely, cute in a good way, heartwarming story, I could feel myself sink into it and just feel comfortable, while my mind went "awwww" every few minutes. Okay, that's a bit exagerrated, but not much.
Except for a few dialogues, the characters were so realistic, the plot was brilliant, as was the narration, that the only regret I had reading this book was that it had to end, way too quickly for my taste. All those different side plots, masterfully interwoven with the main plot that sometimes I was not sure what the main one was. A Christian book, yes, but unlike others of this genre, not hitting a reader over the head with religion, just stating it occasionally when it was fitting into the story and interactions, again, realistic as to what people I know do.
And don't get me started on those paragraphs narrated from Parker's view, they were the heartbreaking and at the same time heartwarming ones.
Did I mention I loved this book? I want to read more like this.
This is definitely worth re-reading several times, for the story and for the uplifting feeling it gives you.

Saving Parker by Dan Walsh is the most delightful contemporary Christian novel that I loved. It is the third book in A Forever Home series but can be read as a stand-alone. I loved meeting up with familiar faces and would recommend reading the previous books first.
Saving Parker is about a rescue. There are the physical rescues of a mistreated dog called Parker and also of a boy from the bullies. The reader is reminded that God rescues us from our situations. We can trust His leading. We learn about empowering ourselves to defeat the bad guys but it must be in self-defense and not to seriously wound.
The book is about trusting too. Parker had learnt to be afraid of humans, now he must learn to trust that humans can offer kindness too.
Parker repays kindness with loyalty. He steps in to rescue those he loves when he senses danger. We are reminded that God also steps in to protect us when life comes knocking.
We cannot stop bad things from happening to us but we can choose how to respond. We need to commit our lives and our loved ones into God’s care. We must cover those we love with prayer.
Life may make us fearful. We were never meant to live in fear. God asks us to surrender our fear to Him and to trust that HE is good and faithful, even when life isn’t.
I adored Saving Parker. All the characters were wonderfully drawn. I love the fact that we ‘hear’ Parker’s voice in the novel. It is a charming read.

so glad i found this free ebook today! i read the first 2 of the series and loved them!!

parker the dog was being abused by a drug dealer. cop ned arrested drug dealer and called animal control to come get parker. but the neighbor told him the pound was full and might be put down due to his poor condition

ned went to check up on him and liked the girl working there. he is taking parker in 2 weeks as foster
parker is very shy and scared

the boy and his mom live next to ned and he is being bullied, just like ned was when he was young. ned had the mom report the bullies but the school does nothing. ned is paying for lessons for the boy to defend himself in exchange for taking care of the dog while ned is at work

the dog pound worker stopped going out with him when he got shot at work. he killed a bank robber but was shot in his bullet proof vest so he was ok

the dog warmed up to him and the boy next door.

the boy took him for a walk, ran into 2 bullies and they kicked the dog hurting him. the smaller boy beat them up using what he was taught in the class the cop took him to

the vet did a operation on the dog and he was ok. the trainer told him she loved him and he loved her and they started dating again.

Smitten for life!

I have laughed, cheered and even cried through all three of Dan Walsh's "Forever Home" series. If I could, I would relocate to Summerville, Florida...that little town just seen out of the corner of your eye....I would live getting to know Kim and the hard working folks at the Humane Society, cheer the new residents in Taylor's small community (I hope one day we get a peek at John and Kenzie-and see how Riley is doing at home in Savannah!~ read Riley's story in book 2) and watch Russell (funny, that is my son's name, too!) grow into the man he is meant to be. I REALLY want to know which treats Kim uses...I know my crew of mis-fit rescues would love them too! But these stories are FAR more than just enjoyable reads. PTSD, loss, bullying, addiction, fear, animal cruelty-but most of all God's Love and Redemption flow through these tales....and with each hard won tail-wag, you realize just how much He Loves us, through these little miraculous hearts known as DOG. Dan, thank you!

Delightful - A must read for dog lovers and anyone who loves a nice, clean read starring a loving, caring animal who has gone through hard times, a handsome, caring police officer just doing his job, an intelligent but below average size little boy who is being bullied at school, a mother who loves him dearly, and some great veterinarians and staff, who love animals and are not blind to good looking, caring men either. Ok - I can't tell you the whole story, but I absolutely love how Dan Walsh wrote this whole series - A Forever Home. The books don't need to be read in order, but if you read from Book 1, 2 and then 3, you will recognize a few of the characters from the past Finding Riley Book 1, and Rescuing Finley, Book 2, and Saving Parker, Book 3 might even be the best, but all great stories.

Thanks Dan for a very interesting read.

Saving Parker takes us back to Summerville, Florida where Kim works at an animal shelter. She has ended her relationship with the billionaire, which works out well when she meets Ned, the police officer. Ned has found Parker, an abused dog who needs lots of love and medical attention. While Parker is featured in this story, most of the book focuses on Ned's next door neighbor, Russell, a sixth grader who is being bullied.

While I enjoyed this novel, it is not the best one in this series. The struggles with bullying is timely and handled well. The interaction with the dog is sweet. This is a faith-based novel featuring Christian adults who include God in their conversations. My issue with this book is the dialogue is clunky in many places and doesn't flow well.

This is family friendly. The dog abuse is discussed but not shown with one exception. There is no sex or profanity.

Animal abuse ranks right up there with child and spousal abuse!!!!!!

Parker has been abused and neglected for months on end. Once a beautiful little dog who was luved by a little boy, he's now a scared, half starved, matted mess. When the police arrest his abuser for dealing drugs, Parker is rescued by a hind police officer. Ned takes Parker to the Humane Society for treatment and care. Kim likes Parker and takes a special interest in him. When Ned decides to be a foster parent to Parker she agrees to help him with training and care of Parker. Things just improve for them until tragedy strikes. How will they all come out on the other side. A great story for all ages. Highly recommended.

Inspiring story

This the third book of four books in Dan Walsh's Forever Home Novels. It still amazes me how Dan can so skillfully weave a romance, human interest, animal behavior and many more intriguing stories into a captivating tale. The characters compliment each other so well without being overly dominant of the others.

When you look at the different dog pictures on the covers and see that the book seems to focus on dogs, you wonder how the story can be interesting. Read the books in this series and you will be pleasantly surprised. And thank you Dan for not using foul language, sexual situations or graphic violance in you novels. I also like the spiritual messages embedded in you written dialog.

Dan has done it again! Another terrific book in the Forever Home series. Ever been in dog rescue? You'll love this book. Ever been bullied or know someone who has? You'll identify with this book. Ever wished all the bad things in life could be turned around for good? You'll want to give this book a try.

A dog & a boy who are both victims of abuse & a humble hero cop who comes to the rescue....literally! And you thought all cops were bad. I couldn't put this book down. Started it on a lazy Saturday & finished it Sunday evening.

I highly recommend, not only this book but the whole Forever Home series. looking forward to the next one, Dan!

Good read. Would recommend

This was the second book I've read by Dan Walsh. I already read book 1 of this series. I had this one in my Kindle so I went ahead and read it. Luckily, this series is written so that each can be a stand alone book. But it was nice getting to see some of the characters from book one in different roles. I really enjoyed this book. I would have given it a 4.5 if I could have, but I rounded up instead of down because we don't have enough writers who write good, clean fiction. Thanks for that, Dan.
Now I'm gonna go finish this series by going back to read book 2. Lol!

Should be noted that this is Christian fiction

Note this is a very heavy handed evangelical Christian book. I have no qualms about reading books with Christian values but I don't enjoy being beaten over the head with an " I'm a Christian" message but with no compassion for anyone except their own pet projects. Then I suppose that is what Evangelical Christianity is all about. It might still be readable if the author had spent more or writing characters with real emotions rather than single statements saying a character laughed or shouted with joy.The premise of the story is good but the execution of the storytelling is poor.

Very enjoyable story! This is the second book in this series that I have read (I need to go back and read book 2, although there are some continuing characters, they stand alone easily).
Walsh features a dog as a character, but his portrayal is incredibly realistic and gives the reader insight into what a dog might possibly be thinking in different situations. It makes you step back and pay attention to your interactions with animals and look at the in a different way.
The romance in the story is sweet and the spiritual element is present but not preachy.

I read the previous two books in this series...and while you can easily read Saving Parker as a stand alone novel, it's always more enjoyable to read them in order.

Dan's writing has heart, personality and integrity. There are several messages in this book that contain wisdom - and it was interesting to see one of them mirroring a message I've just shared in my own soon to be released book.

Read Rescuing Finley and Finding Riley whether you get to them before this one or not. If you love dogs and heartwarming stories, you'll love them all.

5 stars...with more if that was possible.

This heartwarming story was a joy to read and was brimming with uplifting and inspirational wisdom. I especially enjoyed how all of the main characters, including the abused dog, Parker, shared their individual point of view as the narrative progressed. The lives of Parker, the mistreated dog, Ned, the police officer that rescued Parker, Kim, the shelter worker helping Parker prepare for adoption, and Russell, the middle school student dealing with bullies, all become interwoven into this touching tale that will leave you smiling. Very Nice Story!!!

A Wonderfully Written Story About Love

I just loved reading about "Parker" and his human friend. A very touching and we'll written story with interesting POV's. It was fun and amusing to read a POV from a dog named Parker.

This story certainly touched my heart as my husband and I adopted a rescue dog that was neglected, abused and starved of both love and food. It is such a tremendous feeling when you help turn a dog into a part of your family unit as you teach them that not all humans are mean.

I will definitely check out the other stories in this series.

Very sweet story

I have enjoyed every one of the Dan Walsh novels I have read so far, including the Jack Turner Suspense Novels! Saving Parker is a well-written book. I really enjoyed how Mr. Walsh brings his characters in and sort of blends his story from all angles. Just reading about the sweet dog being rescued was interesting. But also reading about the policeman named Ned, his neighbors, Russell and his mother Marilyn, and drawing Kim in, too, made it really hard to put down! I appreciate the faith references and Bible verses used, as well.

I truly enjoyed this book. The values and morals in it are great. A child and a dog both abused, the child, a young boy, being bullied by older and bigger boys, and dog rescued from an owner who neglected him and mistreated him. A police officer who loves hie job and does it well. A shelter volunteer who is kind and warm-hearted. Together they make a story you just can’t stop reading even when your eyes are burning and gritty from wanting to sleep.

I tried to go to bed but ended up reading to the very end. I know I have to get the other books in this series.
