In the world of Tokyo Ghoul, sometimes the only way to fight monsters is to become one…
The Commission of Counter Ghoul is the only organization fighting the Ghoul menace, and they will use every tool at their disposal to protect humanity from its ultimate predator. Their newest weapon in this hidden war is an experimental procedure that implants human investigators with a Ghoul’s Kagune, giving them Ghoul powers and abilities. But both the procedure and the newly formed Qs Squad are untested. Will they become heroes…or monsters?!
Haise Sasaki is in charge of turning the unruly members of the Qs Squad into an elite counter-Ghoul unit. But with everything to prove, will his team bite off more than they can chew when they start investigating the mysterious organization Aogiri Tree? And can Haise be the mentor they need when his forgotten past could come back to haunt him at any moment?
Sui Ishida (石田スイ, Ishida Sui), born December 28, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, is a Japanese manga artist In 2010 he won the Young Jump 113th Grand Prix award with Tokyo Ghoul (東京喰種, Tōkyō Kushu). In March 2011, the same oneshot was published in the 2nd Issue of Miracle Jump. And later in September 2011, Tokyo Ghoul started as a series in Weekly Young Jump 2011-41 Issue. In December 2011, he made another oneshot about Rize that was published in December 2011 in Miracle Jump 6th Issue, which was later collected in the 6th volume of Tokyo Ghoul. In 2013, he also started Tokyo Ghoul: Jack in the digital magazine Jump LIVE.
Sui Ishida is his penname; nobody knows his real name or what he looks like.
This volume revolves around an auction that's taking place, the ghouls are auctioning off humans for consumption or using as slaves; one of the ghouls who is rounding them up is a girl called Nutcracker who has very unusual feeding habits - she consumes mainly men's testicles. *yep* lol
Cool plot and interesting new characters.
Starting Vol. 3 tomorrow, I'm really liking this series!
In the sequel series to Tokyo Ghoul, Haise Sasaki has been tasked with teaching his special squad of half-ghouls how to be outstanding Investigators, but this is complicated by the troublesome personalities of his subordinates and his own uncertain grasp of his Ghoul powers. Will he and the members of his squad become heroes or monsters, taken out by the other squads in the Commission of Counter Ghoul...?!
I've got to start with the art because yeah, I picked it up because of the gorgeous watercolor art and the strikingly realistic black and white drawings. It's just as gorgeous this volume as the previous one. There was some great techniques to show the auras of a couple of the characters as well as some incredible frames that start the battles at the end. The character designs are such that even if I don't know some of the secondary characters' names I can still keep them separate visually, quite an accomplishment if you are going to have so many characters!
The plot of this volume is to setup the investigation needed for the huge battles in volume 3! I'm so glad I was able to review volumes 2 and 3 together because storywise they are heavily linked (I suggest picking them up together!) As such they act as a great contrast to each other. We meet a fourth Quinx who hadn't appeared in volume 1 and a crazy great special investigator Juzo, who is friends with Haise! And a bunch of antagonists are inserted in compelling ways... I wasn't always able to follow what was going on but I was engaged in each of the side characters.
You just can't help but love how rich with character and plot this story is... A LOT is crammed into each volume... its well worth the price from that standpoint alone! But the tension is ratcheted up in this volume and I was particularly worried for Toru... But because there are sooooo many character (something I LOVE) the tension doesn't stay high. You are too busy switching from person to person and trying to figure out what those frames mean. I don't mind this but I'm also not flying through the volume... its more a series you want to buy and savor.
I've really been sucked into the world and the different motivations of all the characters. They range from pure hearted Haise, to selfish Urie, to the ghouls who sometimes don't feel as evil as they should... While I am confused at times I wouldn't want the story to be simpler or less involved. That's part of the story's charm and why you feel compelled to keep reading.
⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity ⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension ⋆⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art
This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7
Thanks to Diamond Bookshelf and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. This has not influenced my opinion.

Ugh, I love where this is going. If you're getting a little stuck in the first prequel series (not JACK, but just plain ol' Tokyo Ghoul), hang in there until the end. It makes all the difference for re:.
Not going to spoil anything but let's just say that we get to see a deeper look at Haise's personality and motivations, and who he REALLY is (though for those who read the original TG, I don't think it'll be a surprise). LOVED this, can't wait for more.
Uta? O.O

This volume is stronger than the last but still lacking what made Tokyo Ghoul so interesting. This one gives us more focus on the team we're sticking with and learning who they are. We also get a villain to hunt down, the Nutcracker, who, you guessed it, cracks nuts. It's pretty disturbing. I thought the 2nd half picked up big time, a lot of crazy moments, and a cool fight scenes. This series is still lacking the exciting pacing and interesting themes of the original series but least it's getting better as it goes. A 3 out of 5.
Human armed enforcers/ special armed force v.s. organized crime group formed by man-eating Ghouls inside a theater, but things aren't as black and white as what it seems.
This volume is more of a setup for the great battle in vol. 3, but don't worry, the battle is already on in this volume too! I love it!!! I'm thankful that I got to read it!!!
Great storytelling and superb artwork...my only quibble...towards the end I was a little overwhelmed by how many characters there were...my head was spinning.
*Having feelings for all of the Quinx Squad.*
This was alright as it continues the tale of Haise and him dealing with after meeting Touka, something is happening in him and then we have him confronting the new enemy Nutcracker as they investigate, they also get Saiko, go undercover as females which was funny, Toro going in and being successful leading them to some auction and she is accompanied by Juzo and its a silent operation to take down as many ghouls as they can but there will be losses on both side, who will win? who will prevail? This volume changes a lot of things as we come one step closer to finding who Haise really is and the reintroduction of a former friend/enemy aka Shu and the fate of Toru Mutsuki and its gonna be epic seeing how Ken..er Haise reacts to it! The art was good and it was a big read yeah but quite fun!
It is really hard to care for the new people at the CCG seeing our friends on the other side Touka <3 Hinami time has really passed :( Arima / Sasaki relation is really something, I really want to know what he exactly did after their fight ... new Juuzou is great!!!
I don’t feel like this is going to end well. Though the art has improved, it’s still inconsistent. We have lots of new characters and their personalities are nor precisely my cup of tea, so there’s that.
I think it’s interesting to see Kaneki/Sasaki as a team leader for the Qx and how they know he’s a ghoul yet they work together and want to prove their worth to him and the CCG.
Juuzou appears again and I’m still shocked the guy is the same age as Sasaki. And he’s so badass, I love him so much. Tho I miss his white hair.
Like I told my friend whom I’m reading this manga with: I was expecting Amon to make his comeback but apparently he died in the attack –which fucking pissed me off. I though he was going to use a prosthetic just like Juuzou. That was wasted potential, tbh.
Ah, also, there’s a guy who looks exactly like white haired Kaneki but who knows. Maybe he’s just another psycho ghoul.
I'm very passionate about this series and I might not be very objective, but I liked this volume a lot! Great plot development and pacing, the art is amazing as well! The story is picking up and I look forward to reading vol. 3!
The characters are so great, I always praised Tokyo Ghoul for complexity of the characters and I'm glad Tokyo Ghoul:re is like that too.
