Lane Bishop is a hardworking, intelligent, young woman. With her recent move to Chapel Hill, she is determined to leave behind the drama and effort of keeping up with the dating scene. Even so, Lane somehow manages to get dragged out by a gaggle of girls to go watch boys play soccer. Just watching is not Lane’s forte, so she joins in the fun and leads her team to victory.
Rather than feeling intimidated by the vivacious beauty on the opposing team, Jamie Hamilton is intrigued. Risking his “untouchable” dating status, he decides to pursue Lane—with a little help from his older brother Simon. With Simon’s behind-the- scenes assistance, Jamie proves irresistible, even to a disillusioned dater like Lane. But as she gets to know both brothers, Lane can’t help but wonder—beneath the grand gestures and romantic words, is she falling for the wrong guy?
Jenny Proctor is an award-winning author of more than fourteen romantic comedies and an Amazon bestseller. She began her career in publishing in 2013; her writing has been a constant since then, but she's also spent time as the owner and managing editor of Midnight Owl Editors and the chair of the Storymakers Conference. Wired for relationships, Jenny loves public speaking, teaching, and building lasting connections.
Jenny was born in the mountains of Western North Carolina, a place she considers one of the loveliest on earth. She loves to hike with her family and spend time outdoors, but she also adores lounging around her home, reading great books or watching great movies and, when she’s lucky, eating delicious food she doesn’t have to prepare herself.
I made it 3/4 through before I just had to stop. Which is sad because I totally loved the first third or so. This is a great setup with Lane and Jamie being a really good surface match and the brother, Simon, being a much more subtle (but complete) one. That dynamic had the kernel of a good story in it but it dragged on. way. too. long. The problem is that the reader knows that every single sign that Lane gets about Jamie's "hidden depths" come from Simon's experience and observations. And that breaks the narrative once it persists long enough. And that turning point happened at about the middle of the novel. I kept waiting for there to be some other conflict or emotional arc or wrinkle but no luck. There's only so long I can put up with Lane thinking "there's this splinter that keeps me from being completely committed to this relationship, but I'll ignore it for a little longer for, er, reasons."
So I felt increasingly picked-on as the essential deception continued and by the time I stopped it had gone on long enough to amount to relationship fraud—with both Jamie and Simon guilty of collusion, frankly. Which broke my sympathy for the Simon/Lane potential because who works to deceive someone they respect or even just like mildly in their romantic endeavors? It's a dick move and having the two brothers engage in it together completely tanks both.
So I had to stop. Maybe Lane can end up with one of her BOYBAND crushes in my head. Or something. Sigh.
I loved this book! I loved it SO much that I finished it in less than 24 hours, because yes, it's that good! The Hamilton brothers (all four of them) were so well written, it was impossible not to fall in love with them. I loved their texts back and forth, and I loved how each brother was so unique. Lane is everything I love about a heroine: confident, fun, witty, likable, smart. And truth be told, I'm a sucker for love triangles! (Note: the ending is well done and people who fear love triangles don't need to fear with this one. Trust me.) I'll definitely be reading more from Proctor, and you should too! Highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy: LDS Romance, Clean/Sweet Romance, Love Triangles.
This is a fun story that took me right back to my days in the YSA (young single adults) group at church. Lane's interactions with Jamie and Simon are entertaining and brought the feelings of anticipation and uncertainty associated with dating. The dynamics of Lane's relationships get more complicated as the plot progresses, and a well-rounded secondary cast help propel her towards the climax where secrets are revealed and she has some choices to make. Recommend to fans of clean contemporary romance and LDS fiction.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
content: clean, the characters are LDS (mormon) but other than talking about where they served missions and talk of attending church at a singles ward there is nothing else mentioned and no "preaching"
This was a fun and invigorating story about YSA(Young single adults) and navigating the dating scene as well as trying to survive in the world by securing a job and making a living doing what you love.
Lane loves soccer, playing for fun, competitively, you name it. She doesn't back down from a challenge and enjoys life to the fullest. She is a bi-racial young woman and has a zest for life and her religion. Everything she does, she does well and to the best of her ability. When she moves back closer to her childhood home for an event coordinator job at a small inn that she has loved since she was little, she isn't quite sure what is in store for her. Lots of ups and downs and new experiences await her. Now she must decide what her heart truly wants and if she is willing to take the leap to achieve it.
There's a bit of a love triangle here but not in the traditional sense of a love triangle. Is that confusing? I really want to explain that thought better but I really don't like giving spoilers. Maybe the best way to say it is think Cyrano de Bergerac. Or similar to that. Just a little hint, but not really, because it's different. Ugh. I'm not making much sense am I? Just read the book if you like great in-depth characters, love stories, strong and sweet characters and just all out good fun while reading!
I will say I loved one character so much! He was so thoughtful and kind, willing to give and give and give. That's about all you'll get from me on those love triangle people.
I'm way past being a young single adult but this did take me back to those college days of dating and hanging out with other single adults and the good friendships we made. I think anyone who is a young single adult, or an older single adult or a married adult, can enjoy this book. Fun and swoony!
I loved the writing style and the characters. I have read a short novella of Jenny Proctor's before and enjoyed it. But reading this full length novel was great. I didn't want to put it down! I will definitely be looking for more of her books.
Content: Clean. Some kissing. Some sweet and some a little more passionate but nothing further. Religious aspects, nothing preachy, the character is LDS and talks about going to church activities and allowing God to guide her.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Sometimes a book just squishes my heart and resonates with my soul and that's exactly how this one is. I spent a fair amount of time in a YSA ward (LDS) and this really brought back some long forgotten feelings.
Lane is starting a new job and is back in North Carolina. She's bi-racial and I love how that aspect is touched on, because although we live in a more progressive society, there are still some prejudices floating around and it's vaguely apparent in this book. Lane isn't afraid of competition, and in fact, thrives on it. That first meeting with the Unobtainable Foursome (brothers) is classic and they all immediately captured my interest. I love how little pieces of Lane are attracted to different parts of Simon and Jamie, two of the brothers.
Through a series of texts between the brothers, as well as some dire moments for Lane, where she desperately needs help, the reader comes to know these characters and their diverse personalities. I found myself smiling, swooning, and hoping for a happy ending as I turned these pages and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is a great read for those who enjoy clean, new adult, contemporary romance with some religious undertones.
Content: clean romance; mild religious elements.
*I received a complimentary copy. All thought expressed are my own opinions.*
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review"Wrong for You." What a wonderful romance. I love it when authors write strong female characters who exist in their own lives independent of a man. And Lane certainly fits that bill. An outgoing soccer player who runs event planning at a local inn and has a strong relationship with her family... she was just such a treat to read.
And equally enjoyable wasthe way the two love interests were crafted. They were both presented as attractive, but the man Lane ultimately fits with was simply more right. And I loved how that was shown in all the little details. It's also so important in love triangle stories that the triangle be resolved without any unforgiveable moves on the part of the protagonist, and I thought that was pulled off well as well. Just an incredibly well honed plot.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author.
I'm so excited for this book! I loved exploring the relationships between brothers, the loyalty and dedication of families, and the complications that falling in love can bring. Lane is a character I loved to write--strong, independent, but tender when it matters. (Also, her grandma? She's the everlovin best.)
This book was so fun. My smile was out in full force with this one. The scenes played out so naturally and I could easily visualize what was happening. It was like the perfect chick flick movie playing out in my head. See? Fun!
Yes, the plot is a bit predictable but the unknown is how everything is going to work out in the end when two brothers love the same girl. That's just a mess waiting to happen because these brothers are close. They have a fantastic family dynamic that includes loyalty and "I've got your back no matter what". So yeah, things get messy before they get better.
Lane is fantastic. She is smart, witty, athletic, beautiful, and full of life and energy. You can see how different parts of her personality are drawn out by each brother.
I really enjoyed this book. It light and fun and you have to love a book that brings all the happy, romantic feels with it!
Content: LDS fiction (some religious mentions although nothing preachy) some kissing
Jenny Proctor is the master of a well-written romance. This book had some humor too and that was a great addition to the story. Each page brought a smile to my face. Jenny is such a great writer. Lane is fantastic character. She is smart, spunky, successful, funny and she loves a food. I loved how different she was, and I especially loved the North Carolina setting. I thought it was so fun how she met Jamie and his brothers. Lane is not afraid to get what she wants, that scene where they all meet is proof. I also enjoyed the different way we got to know the brothers, through their text messages. It was a very clever and fun way to get to know Jamie and Simon and the hints that Jamie may be wrong for Lane.
5 out of 5 stars. Another hit for this author.
Received a complimentary copy, all views and opinions expressed are my own.
I absolutely loved this book!! Wrong for You is a sweet, fun romance that has fantastic writing.
Lane Bishop falls quickly for one of the very eligible, very chased-after Hamilton brothers. But it isn't long before she wonders if she's fallen for the wrong one. I loved Lane and her spunk, Jamie and his competitiveness, and Simon's consistency. I was hooked from the very beginning--when Lane challenges the boys in a soccer match. One of my favorite meet cutes to date! It had me smiling through the entire scene.
I ADORED this book! So much FUN! You will cheer for Lane from the very beginning as she works her way onto the soccer field--such a fun scene!!! Then your heart will be taken away as you travel with her along these wonderful pages. And I can't wait for you to read the phone texts sent between the bothers-- What great writing!!! Definitely pick up a copy of this book!!!
This was such a charming romance! Some of the things I thought were wonderful:
*Lane was pretty awesome. She was a black-puerto-rican-southern-morman, and I have not read any other books with a heroine who fits that description. She was also family orientated, a great friend, a hard worker, very bright, very strong, competitive, and she read books! She is definitely someone I would like to be friends with, and that made me totally care what happened to her.
*I loved the Hamilton brother dynamic. They played off each other quite well, and would tease and taunt, but underneath it all was so much genuine affection. I wanted more of them together in this book.
*I liked how Proctor gave us a different POV. The majority of the book is told from Lane's POV, however, at the end of each chapter, we got a peek at the epic text thread that existed between the Hamilton boys. It was there, that we got to spend a little time in their heads, and I thought that was a nice touch, which absolutely added to the story.
*Both families were pretty awesome too, and I really enjoyed those trips home to meet the parents. They were a lot of fun.
*Speaking of fun, the general tone of this book is fun, which is my favorite kind of romance. I didn't want angst or tears. I wanted fun and light with some heart, and that is exactly what I got. There were some really hilarious moments, but also some really beautiful moments.
*I sort of loved Simon from the start. You should always keep your eye on the quiet ones. He was a perfect romantic hero, and the things he said and did totally made me swoon.
Overall: A sweet romance with a family focus, which was fun and it left me feeling happy.
This was the first book that I've ever read by Jenny Proctor and I was so impressed that I immediately bought another one to read next, which I will tell you about! I loved the witty voice of Lane and her relationship with her Grandma in this book. The scene where we first meet the Hamilton brothers is all kinds of fun and had me immediately invested in the story. This book is fun, light, clean, and humorous, yet it has depth at the same time--a hard feat to pull off in a rom com. I admired Lane's qualities and those of the Hamilton brothers as well. Which one of the brothers was my favorite? You'll have to read the book to see who Lane chooses because I agree with her heart!
I am new reader to Proctor and I am impressed! Honestly she swept me out of my world and into Lane's immediately. And while I am not a soccer fan, I loved Lane's passion for the game and her skills she used against the Hamilton brothers. The story flowed easily and I could picture Chapel Hill in North Carolina and the Winding Way Inn with Lane hard at work at her desk. And two very handsome Hamilton boys making occasional appearances there! The whole story of Lane trying to figure out if she and Jamie were right for each other and the entire time seeing and noticing things about Simon, I knew it was going to get complicated. I was unprepared for the fun, crazy and emotional journey that Proctor took me on. Yet, I am still wanting more now that I am finished reading! Give me more Lane! Give me more Hamilton brothers! I want more Abuela! Take your pick ladies because any of these Hamilton brothers would be a perfect book boyfriend! This book was a lot of fun to read and I really hope Proctor writes Connor's story next! I received a copy for free from the publisher, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Rating: LDS/romance/clean/sweet
Romance, Christian faith elements, Latter-day Saint faith, clean This was a wonderful, fun read. I loved the interactions between the brothers, how they met, and how Lane fell. It was just an all around great read for me. I tend to devour books, and this one, I had to go back, reread, and savor the end. It was just a lovely read. Lane's job, her friendships, her relationships, and her family (loved the picture that was painted of them!), loved her character, and Jamie and Simon were wonderful characters. J.P. did a beautiful job with this story. I have to say she is one of my favorite author finds. The moments between Lane and the H (don't want to spoil the triangle!) were just lovely. I love honest, tender hearts, and this was a perfect read for me. I especially enjoyed all of the hints that were there. Lane's loyalty, and her desire to be true to the one brother, and how her heart and her friends and family kept telling her something else were well done. I loved seeing her thought processes, her struggles, and the hints that were dropped along the way. Beautifully done. Well worth a read again just to savor this one! I received a copy from Net Galley from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way influenced by the publisher.
I've literally just finished this book, and have actual tears pouring down my face, and I'm filled with all the tingly that the final few pages just gave me... well and the last page - OK, that was pretty awesome way to end a book!
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel as I progressed through this story. One girl, two brothers. I'm always a bit skeptical about this type of plot. However, I can solidly say that this one was done with sensitivity and class.
The root beer float thing? I've never been in a LDS Singles Ward, so maybe that's a real thing, but I do love root beer floats, though maybe I'll never look at them the same again!!!
As a Mormon author, Jenny does add enough elements of her faith into the pages that may seem unfamiliar to someone who wasn't LDS. However, I don't think this is a problem. I read enough Christian lit that is written by authors who are always writing in elements of their worship, that while may seem a little foreign or different to me - I can fully embrace it in the spirit it is meant. I actually was really appreciative that Jenny included some references to God in regards to the circumstances the characters found them in. I never feel like the LDS authors go there as freely as other Christian authors do, and I really wish they would! I love that aspect of a novel, it brings so much richness and inspiration, along with the escape of a good book. So, what I am trying to say is, even though this book is written and marketed probably at mostly LDS members, I recommend Jenny's books to other bookish friends. She writes with skill and on a par with many clean Christian fiction authors, that sell their books and are widely known through the national marketplace.
Set in North Carolina, I swear this author is intent on getting us all to come visit the state!! I have fallen in love with her locations through her books. If I could jump in a car and start driving to NC right now, I would!!
I'm not even going to attempt a breakdown of the plot or story, because seriously I don't want to spoil anything for you. I loved this book, I loved that Emma & Elliot (Love at First Note) appeared in a small cameo, I loved the location, the characters - so diverse with such a depth that even the minor characters will leave you convinced of the significant part they play.
I'm not usually a fan of 'texts' or 'emails' within stories, well, that is unless its overdone. Not the case here. It was a clever way to add an alternate insight without having to write all major characters point of view. Keeping it to just Lane, kept the story streamlined, but the inclusion of the Hamilton brothers group text's was genius.
Thank you to Jenny Proctor & Covenant Communications for the copy I won through a giveaway. This is my honest review.
This contemporary clean romance has a subtle love triangle that has three amazing characters in it. I loved each of them, which made it hard to know who to cheer for—I just cheered for all three. Lane Bishop moves to her grandmother’s hometown. When she jumps into a pick-up game of soccer and meets three brothers, she is attracted to the oldest brother, Simon. But when she learns he is unavailable because he has a long-distance girlfriend already, she goes after his younger brother, Jamie. Jamie is intrigued by the confident soccer playing girl who beats him. Seeking his older brother’s help to figure out what Lane loves, he works his way into her heart. But Lane sometimes wonders if she’s falling in love with the wrong brother.
I really liked this story. I think it’s my favorite of Jenny Proctor’s books. It’s well written and her characters are so cool and diverse. Lane is a half-black/Puerto Rican, vivacious, strong willed college soccer superstar. The Hamilton brothers are so funny as they group text each other through this story. I loved the interaction between them. It’s a hard love triangle to work your way through because you love all three so much. Super well done. It really yanked my emotions on this one in the best of way. Super good dialogue and prose. If you’re looking for a delicious book to savor, this one will make you smile.
Fun, quick read I couldn't put down. Took me back to my YSA days (young single adult)...which was fun! No spoiler but I REALLY liked one of the brothers. Well they're all great but one stands out a little more hehe. Clean romance with very likeable characters that were well written! Highly recommended
I love Jenny Proctor’s books and have no idea how I missed this one, but I started it and couldn’t put it down. Such a cute story with a bit of a love triangle between brothers and some fake dating/engagement at the end! I loved Lane and both of her cute grandmas and who wouldn’t love all 4 of the Hamilton brothers—especially their text threads. Such a cute story!
Jenny is one of my favorite romance writers, and is hands-down my favorite writer of LDS romance. The characters in this story are nuanced and the plot moved along in a way that never felt boring or contrived. I’ve been reading her books from the beginning, and I can’t wait to see what she does next! Jenny, you just keep getting better. ❤️
I need a category for these simple, quick read, vacation books. Three stars if that is what you are looking for. And if you are a teenage girl. Other than that 2.5.
This was such a fabulous book!! After that first soccer game, I was hooked on the story and the emotional rollercoaster. Man, that was good!!! I just love Simon so much! I wish the ending was a little longer so I could know what happened, but there were a lot of clever writing tactics from Jenny Proctor that helped give me clues to what happened.
Now I have to figure out if this is part of a series or if there are other books about the Hamilton family because I sure hope there are!
This is a refreshing addition to the LDS Romance Genre. Lane is a vivacious young woman who has a lot to look forward to professionally. She is smart, athletic, with a great personality. She is a whole package for a lucky young man. In this case, it becomes a choice between two brothers.
From the beginning you learn through playing soccer and text between the brothers just how much they mean to each other. Relationships are tough enough, but when you have brothers interested in the same girl, it adds a layer of hurt feelings and knowing that a good guy is not going to be the winner.
There are some aspects of the book that I could really relate to, and they are at the beginning. I wasn't a fan of YSA Wards, I hate sushi, and I am allergic to walnuts. Now you have to read it to find out what the heck I am referring to. :) One thing that struck me in the book was the mention of prejudice in our society. Lane is bi-racial. She is Puerto Rican and African American. It is painful to be reminded that not everyone is looks at the person instead of just the color.
This is a cute romance that has LDS characters. It is a story that I feel can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys a book with different perspectives.
Dec 2022 reread: Still very cute the second time! I also appreciate how much the main character wants to have good communication in her relationship. Something very important that’s sometimes forgotten in romance novels.
Feb 2018: This book was so cute. I thought I’d dislike it because, look, the whole premise is basically a big love triangle, which is my least favorite romance trope. But it was adorable. Like, I had to go sit in my room for a few minutes when I was done so my family wouldn’t ask my why I had a ridiculous grin pasted on my face.
So even though I don’t like love triangles, this one worked magnificently. (Only the second one that’s ever actually worked for me.) Even from the beginning of the book, there’s hints of who she’s supposed to be with. You know who you’re supposed to root for. Plus, there is so much more stuff happening in the book than just the whole romance thing.
Which leads me to…the minor characters! I loved them–all of them. Which is amazing because there are many of them…most of them showing up in only a few scenes. But they’re great! From Granny Grace to Carlos to Abuela to Randi…there were so many awesome characters, and I felt like I got to know a little bit of each of them throughout the book, which was so awesome.
I loved all of the family relationships represented in this book as well! There were such strong families and bonds between siblings/parents/grandparents, which was so awesome. I loved seeing how everyone interacted with each other, and it was just great.
And Simon…oh my gosh, I love Simon. He was so sincere and sweet and fantastic…I think I could sing his praises all day. He was so awesome and made me so happy. And Jamie was cool too! I liked how Proctor was able to create a love triangle where we like both of the guys but know that only one of them is right for Lane. Simon, though. He’s amazing.
This was like a big novel of everything I love in my LDS romances. I mean, I love fantasy and dragons and all of that…but this is why I do read books like this. Because sometimes they can be so filled with amazingness and awesome characters and real world situations. It makes me so happy.
I'm always on the lookout for new books by my favorite authors and Jenny Proctor is one of them. I have loved each and every one of her books! She writes in such an amazing and engaging way! This book is no exception to that, I didn't want to put it down!
I really loved Lane. I love the fact that she's so competitive in pretty much everything she does. But at the same time, she's willing to slow down and back off when she needs to, I really loved a scene in this book where she and the rest of the characters are biking as kind of a race, but Lane stops to care for someone who really needs her help. I also liked that she's willing to take a step back and think about things and be really honest with herself. That plays a big part in the plot of this one.
This book is really fun because there are not one but two male leads. That makes things fun, interesting and competitive! First there's Jamie. He's kind of a hunky man and at least as competitive as Lane, if not more. I liked a lot of things about him, he was willing to go out of his way to ask about Lane from his brother. That was sweet at first, but he wasn't really willing to find out about her himself. And I really didn't love how he acted during the bike scene I already mentioned.
Then there's Simon. Part of the fun of the plot is that Simon and Jamie are brothers and they spend a lot of time together. Simon is a considerate, and kind person. I love the way he was always noticing the things Lane liked and wanted. And I loved how he was always trying to take care of her.
This book is almost all from Lane's perspective. But I really loved the glimpses into what the brothers were thinking that you get at the end of each chapter where a bit of their texting conversation is included. This was so much fun! It was fun to see each of the brothers personalities come out there. And I loved the insights into each chapter it gave.
This book is so much fun! Go grab a copy! You'll love it!
