Readers' Favorite 2018 Christian Fiction Honorable Mention
Gemma Ebworthy is eighteen, pregnant, and alone. Now that she's been evicted, she finds herself sleeping in a barn, never dreaming that tomorrow could bring kindness of a life-changing magnitude.
The Martins aren't a typical family—even for rural Kansas. With more kids than can be counted on one hand and a full-time farm, Gemma must make a lot of adjustments to fit in. But despite their many differences, Gemma finds herself drawn to this family and their radical Christian faith.
When Gemma's past collides with her yet again, she must begin revealing her colorful history. With every detail Gemma concedes, she fears she will lose the Martins' trust and the stable environment she desires for herself and her unborn child. Just how far can the Martins' love and God's forgiveness go?
Abigayle has been a writer ever since her mother taught her how to hold a pencil. However, she devoted more time to reading words with her green eyes than penning them with her left hand. Inspired by a crazy dream at the age of sixteen, she set off on a journey to self-publish her first novel, Martin Hospitality.
Since then, Abigayle has devoted herself to sharing what she has learned through the mediums of freelance editing and her blog The Left-Handed Typist ... when period drama films are not calling more loudly. Now she is committed to providing a community where real-world stories resound and prose has purpose.
None of her successes, including winning a 2017 Readers’ Favorite Award, would be possible without the support of her Savior, large family, and online community.
Okay. I can die happy now. (Review to come when published XD)
**Review**
Gemma is such an endearing character. Pregnant, alone, and scared, but she's honest about her past wrongs and very respectful to the Martins. She's realistic and relatable and, ahhhh! Just all the way around an amazing main character that you can't help but love. :D
And then we have Josiah... Who's practically perfect. XD Okay, I'm kidding. He's not perfect; he has faults. But, eeps, I think he was probably my favorite character. ;) Such a sweet fella and all-around a great guy. *smiles*
*minor spoilers ahead* Little Farris, aww!! If you want to flail and squeal over an adorable baby boy, you definitely need this book. (Oh, wait. You need it even if not. Never mind. :P)
All of the Martin kids were so much fun to read about. They welcomed Gemma into their big, happy family and made her feel right at home. Ginger was probably one of my favorites (with Elias, of course... <3), but the little ones were so cute. ^.^ Mrs. Martin also was such a dear and so good to Gemma. I wasn't sure what to make of Mr. Martin at first, but he redeemed himself in the end, so I'm good. ;)
I can think of anything that made me not like this book at any time. As I said, Mr. Martin did 'brush me the wrong way' at times though. *minor spoilers* The way he sometimes treated Gemma bothered me. I could somewhat see where he was coming from, wanting to protect his own kids, but he was a bit blunt with some things that I thought would've been best said privately to his wife. And NOT said in front of Gemma or the kids. *end of spoilers*
And the ending...<3 <3 I want even delve into that, because you don't wanna spend all day reading this review and I don't wanna spent all morning writing it. :P But let's just say I squealed with delight at the last chapter and can't wait for more books in the Martin Generations series :D
So yes. Go purchase this book RIGHT NOW and then read it!! XD You will have no regrets...be a good child and trust me with this money-related-decision. *nods*
**In addition to beta-reading, I had access to an e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.**
FTC DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy of this book. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I was slightly nervous to read this book because of the main theme, but I shouldn’t have worried--the author did a superb job of handling all the hard issues! The Martin family was so special. They never did anything super extraordinary, just served Jesus in their everyday life. All the real life moments were pretty fun (I highlighted a ton of quotable dialogue), but I appreciated that they were capable of faults like the miscommunication about whether or not Gemma could stay.
Gemma was a very lovable character, and I rooted for her as she tried to be an honest, hardworking guest. I was happy with how her story resolved, and I loved it when she encouraged Anneliese to trust her parents. All throughout the book, the author showed a delightful, true-to-life balance in her characterization. No one was a caricature, not even the city church I was expecting to be shown as watered-down. Everyone had a good quality (except maybe ) and everyone had a struggle, even the ever awesome Josiah. His was especially heartbreaking. *sobs* He was so patient to explain the Gospel in the little bits Gemma was ready for, and I loved how the whole message came out solidly and naturally. And every fangirl will agree that whole “creeps” episode was pretty awesome. :D
I successfully adored Farris, laughed at Hollie (everyone needs a Hollie in their life), and hated Travis’s guts. The lady from church was such a sweetie! Recommended for older highschool students because of an unwed mother, dangerous young men, and a few mentions of death, abortion, and childbirth.
Best quotes: “Do you know what I wished for?” She didn’t wait for a response. “I wished that Gemma could stay with us forever.”
“Can you cook, too, Josiah?” Gemma said. “Um… I do eggs and macaroni.”
“You’d better be on your best behavior, little man. People are coming to see you.” He splashed soap bubbles in her eye as a response.
Altogether, I very much enjoyed this book about a family being a light to their small corner of the world and reaching out in love to broken people. I have now joined the ranks of people clamoring for a sequel because I’m anxious to hear more about everyone, especially Anneliese and Mr. and Mrs. Long.
OM goodness! I LOVED this!!! After waiting months and months to read this, and listening to all my friends fangirl about it, I finally read it! It fully met, and probably exceeded my expectations! I read every chance I would get and stayed up wayyyyyyyy too late 2 nights in a row to finish this. I did not want to ever put it down!
Let's start with my dislikes and get them over with. I know it is a series, but I felt like some things should have been wrapped up better. Such as the storyline with Annaliese; we left her in shock on her bed and never heard from her again. I would have liked to have seen that wrapped up. Also Mr. Martin's storyline. I heard to rumor that we was going to play a more major part in book 2, but I feel like his storyline still needed a little closure. I also felt like there were a few very minor plot holes\issues, but they were very minor. I also felt like Gemma accepted Christianity a bit suddenly, but it wasn't that big of a deal. So, all in all, I still give this 5 stars!!
On to characters; THEY ALL ARE AMAZING!!! Gemma is perfect. And I don't mean perfect, as in she is perfect, but her character is so well rounded and has such depth, that it makes her a perfect character. And the Martin family . . . I love all of them! Especially the three youngest, they are all so adorable! I love the part when Gail was helping in the kitchen . . . <3 They were all great! Josiah was quite good, but I felt like he was lacking a bit of dimension. . . maybe that is just me though. Travis was also a good character . . . boy did I want to punch him numerous times though!! And let's not forget Farris!!! OH MY WORD!!! SO ADORABLE!!! I just want to hug him!
And the story was just amazing! Beautifully done! While the story involves some touchy issues, Abigayle never goes into uncomfortable details, but handles it in a very tasteful and tactful way. Kudos!
All in all, I really enjoyed this! It will definitely be a reread for me. For a debut novel, it was quite good! I can tell Abigayle really poured her heart into this book, and it is all the better for it. I look forward (with great anticipation and no patience) to future works by this author!
CONTENT NOTE: (may contain spoilers) Recommended for ages 14+ for adult content.
I had the privilege of beta reading this book and it was very well done! The enjoyable story of a young girl who finds a savior in Jesus Christ. This book kept me intrigued with it's plot twists and detailed writing! A great read for the Christian Fiction fans! . . . The review. . . Ok. This book. I was blown away! There are so many things to like about this book and I am hugely impressed that it was a first effort by the author.
I had the privelege of Beta Reading this book for Abigayle. I read it right after it came out and the fact that I enjoyed it SO much a second time speaks volumes. This book is full of innocent, real life beauty. The plot is so great because it took me on twists and turns I did not expect! This book made me smile, tear up, laugh out loud, and I literally just wanted to hug the book.
The aspects of a large family were so amazingly done! From the perspective of a gal (me) who has a large family and lots of siblings, I was totally relating and nodding my head while laughing. It is so realistic and heart warming. And instead of the numerous characters getting mixed up or shuffled together, each character had a personality that was unique and interesting. I remember them all! The humor was also spot on!
Which brings me to another thing about this book. It was memorable. The attention to detail was amazing, but yet, it never got bogged down. For instance, she made a nail memorable. A nail people! And that nail made me so happy! You will have to read the book to know what I am talking about, but I am not even kidding. While this book is pretty long by today’s standards, I loved it. I am used to reading books written from a time-period that is 50 years or more behind us. This book hearkened back to that time. I just loved it so much that I really wanted to live in this book! Abigayle made me want to hug her characters, and smack a few of them. Which is a good thing because it means I was so into it! The romance is so sweet and understated. . . just the way I like it. Can I hug somebody, please?
The story does deal with some nitty-gritty things. Gemma’s past is far from perfect, but Abigayle never goes into uncomfortable details. It is handled delicately enough that it is a pleasant read. I would recommend that the readers be 14+ for some of the content. Aside from that, it is just a lovely, enjoyable, and glorious read.
Which leads me to my last comment. The gospel truths that were woven throughout the story make this book so much better. Gemma’s story of finding God was a highlight in this book. I don’t doubt that God placed this story on Abigayle’s heart for a reason and I trust that He will use it for His glory.
I will be putting my copy of Martin Hospitality on the shelf in a place of honor! I look forward to more of what Abigayle Claire has to offer! Hats off to you Abigayle! You wrote an amazing book!
My sister bought Martin Hospitality with a bulk of other books, and I planned to get to them eventually. When I read a negative review on Goodreads for MH, my interest was piqued and I decided to give it a try to see if the review was relevant.
This was a story of a girl who has burned every bridge and is at the end of her luck. She's running from her past. Then she suddenly has a family that wants to show her what it's like to live with a Savior.
I was reminded of a Bible verse about how we will entertain angels unaware. The Martins seem like a family that has entertained angels.
I worked at a pregnancy center for over a year, so I've seen a lot of girls like Gemma. (The main character.) I didn't think Martin Hospitality was too explicit, personally. The review I read was offended by too many details... but i didn't quite feel the same way. Everyone has different opinions.
Martin Hospitality has a mature storyline. It's probably geared more towards girl. All in all, I really enjoyed MH and think most young women would too.
OMG This is another 5 star for a new author! I should seriously stop reading classics and just stick to girls that I know. This was a precious book. Folks, if you haven't read it, you totally should! Read the other reviews to find out about the awesome characters and story and all everything amazing else!
So the first thing to note here is that I started this book at 12 in the morning, and FINISHED it at 3:47, which should tell you something. Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARTIN HOSPITALITY!!!!
This story was so so beautiful! I loved each of the characters (and I love the Martin's oh my word). I loved Gemma's sarcasm and sassiness, and I loved Josiah and I loved the themes and I loved how they were homeschooled and all that. The characters really made the story, and THERE WERE SO MANY OF THEM! I only got confused 53 times...jkjk they were actually really easy to keep track of, which is a feat for me.
I also really liked how the characters each had their own minor storyline at times as well as the little coincidences. Also all the little plot twists!! I loved those.
The only thing I have issues with is a few inconsistencies I felt within the story. For instance, sometimes Josiah felt a lot younger than he actually was (16ish was how I perceived him for a lot of the story), and also sometimes the timing/setting of the story felt a little off. (Do people in Kansas still do like corn shucking and stuff? sometimes the Martins felt Amish but then they used computers and stuff--it just wasn't described entirely, which is fine, but I would have liked some more background and explanation.) Also the point of view sometimes shifted away from Gemma sometimes, but sometimes it has flashes of point of view from someone else, which is kind of inconsistent as well, since the GREAT MAJORITY of POV was from Gemma's POV.
I also wouldn't recommend it to younger audiences, because of content such as (unplanned) pregnancy, mentions of drugs and alcohol, abusive situations, and stuff like that (which was also impressive, for an author who is homeschooled and doesn't have that kind of experience behind her).
Overall, it was a brilliant story, different from other stories that I've read! Props to Abi Claire!
*major fangirling* YES JUST YES. I LOVE THIS BOOK SSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MMMMMMMMMMUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. *dies*
Martin Hospitality is such an amazing book!!! I advise you all to read it at once or suffer my wrath. *brandishes sword* GO BUY IT NOW. IT CAME OUT IN FEBRUARY. YOU SHOULD ALL HAVE IT IN YOUR HANDS RIGHT NOW. IF YOU DON’T GO ORDER IT.
All the characters are so real (if only they were real...), the settings made me feel like I was actually in Kansas with the characters, and I JUST LOVE IT SO MUCH.
Abi. You are an amazing writer. Martin Hospitality will definitely be on the NYT Best Selling List. Yup. It will. Because it’s awesome. And you’re awesome. Just. Plain. Awesome.
Beautiful, very well-done and tactful story only lacks pacing.
This was overall a fairly good story that was probably the best and cleanest depiction of a difficult situation (teen pregnancy & unwed mother) that I’ve ever read. However, I personally found it a little blah. The plot went on and on, especially in the middle, and I didn’t find it too interesting or suspenseful. Then the ending came in a rush, with romance that appeared to come out of nowhere.
Content: 100% clean, though it is a story about an unwed mother. Still, I think anyone over perhaps 13 could read it with ease. It’s that well-portrayed.
My first thought after reading this? I WANT A SEQUEL. Oh my goodness, this book. Where do I start? Abigayle did an AMAZING job writing this. I was immediately sucked into the story. The characters were SO. REAL. The story was SO. REAL. The whole thing was real, almost raw. And the plot twists! I seriously could not have guessed where this thing was going, but it wasn't confusing at all. And JOSIAH! Please, can I have him? I love that guy.
All in all, this is DEFINITELY a five-star for me, and good night. PLEASE, ABIGAYLE, FINISH UP THE SEQUEL.
I don't normally read contemporary fiction. Just because I prefer to spend my reading time travelling to other eras. However, when I heard Abi needed beta-readers for her contemporary christian novel, I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Of course, that fact that the story takes place in my state, and my city helped a lot. That . . . NEVER happens. ;)
I'm so glad I did! I really enjoyed the story! Especially Josiah. *nods* He was like, my favorite part of the entire thing. I also really enjoyed the simplicity of the Martin family. It made a very stark contrast against the life Gemma came from.
I really loved seeing Gemma grow throughout the course of the book. She was totally different at the end than she was at the beginning. Her journey was beautiful! And Farris! *squeals* He was adorable, 'kay? Like, he was the perfect little baby and I just wanted to hold and cuddle him!
As for anything I didn't like . . . I wasn't too fond of how Mr. Martin interacted with the family. I get how he was a bit protective, perhaps, but then at the same time, it seemed as though he wasn't quite as protective in other areas where he should have been. And his leadership as the head of the home just seemed a bit . . . off, for lack of a better word. It wasn't a huge thing, but it did bother me a bit. Other than that, I pretty much loved everyone and everything. Except Travis. Though . . . I still want to know some more about his life. Maybe a story from his POV? *hints at the author* ;)
As for content warnings . . . there is an out-of-wedlock pregnancy (obviously. xD) But it was handled very discreetly. There is also the mention of drugs, but it's never gone into. The author handed them very well, in my opinion. So yes, if you enjoy contemporary christian fiction, I'd definitely recommend this book!!
So Martin Hospitality is a book about a girl who’s pregnant out of wedlock. It also talks a bit about abortion. First of all, this can be a touchy subject. At least, it’s definitely a difficult subject to write a book on without offending people. However, Abigayle did an excellent job on this. I love how she touches upon it humbly and gently. She states her beliefs clearly (not in your face clearly, but if you think about it you won’t be confused or anything) but not in a pushy way. I think that’s always an excellent way to approach a difficult subject.
Second of all (well, this isn’t related to the first paragraph, but whatever), Abigayle’s style of writing is a m a z i n g and f a n t a s t i c . It flows well- I never felt like some of the chapters weren’t connected or had bad transitioning. The characters are very well developed.
Content: - Like I mentioned earlier, Gemma is a pregnant but not married, and there are also light mentions of abortion. However, none of this is condoned. It’s not dealt with in a heavy way, which is why I think it’d be fine for a mature 11 year old girl to read. - There is some romance between quite a couple of characters, but it’s all extremely clean.
Conclusion: I really loved this book! *squeals for an eternity* I definitely enjoyed the story line and all the twists, and if there’s a sequel, you bet that’s going right into my TBR list. 4.75 stars.
Recommended to mature 11 year olds+ for light mentions of abortion and pregnancy out of wedlock.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
Okay tbh when I first started this book, I wasn’t too excited and didn’t think I would like it very much but.... haha I couldn’t put it down! (I lit read it in one day) Plz, add this to you tbr and get it it was so amazing!
3.5 stars. I'm rounding up for the fact I do look forward to the second installment!
STORY
Martin Hospitality deals with hard topics: the main character is eighteen and pregnant. She chooses life for her baby and the novel follows her growth as a person and as a mother. The story is handled tastefully! Hope is shown throughout the difficulties. In a society where this topic is either condemned without mercy or shied away from, this novel was a refreshing taste of how reality is. People make mistakes but there is always hope, always a better way of life.
Personally, while the story was great, it was hard for me to read. I thought it a bit slow and while not exactly uneventful, the events didn't exactly always have my attention.
THEMES
This is where the story grew a bit hard for me to digest. First, what I loved about the messages in this book!
-- THE HOPE. Whether you're pro-life or pro-choice, this novel is a great example of how children are still children! Our circumstances may be hard, but life is beautiful, regardless. I have much respect for Ms. Claire because of how she wove this story together to offer mothers hope. -- The kindness. So many people showed kindness when it did nothing to benefit them. A great message to be learned: do unto others as you want them to do in return. -- The courage. Trusting God with all her heart didn't come naturally to Gemma and her faith wasn't a fix all. This is so important! Believing in Jesus doesn't fix everything. But this story shows how faith makes life worth living.
Here are some things with the themes I did struggle with.
-- Perhaps it was just me, but I did have an issue with how things began. I understand bringing home a homeless, very pregnant mother... But Mrs. Martin, from what I saw, didn't even call her husband for permission? I know, I know, a wife doesn't need permission--but they'd had troubles with bringing in people before. It is dangerous. I dislike the Christian mindset of "If you don't allow people into your home, despite the harmful consequences, you don't have enough faith God will take care of you!" That's not true. Mrs. Martin had a house full of children who can have been harmed by bringing in a stranger, no matter how good she was at guessing people's characters. I'm not saying some families won't be called to do such actions, but I am saying I disliked it. -- A lot of teenage rebellion that wasn't handled too well, in my opinion. What do I mean? Well, one of the daughters, Ginger, was 16 and already planning on courting a young gentlemen. She agreed to wait till she was 18, but I disliked this romance. I mean, she's 16. I'm grateful she chose to obey her parents' wishes but I simply disliked the romance, but it was handled tastefully. I just have VERY little good experience with a 16 year old making such a committal life-long plan, ha.
Overall, the messages were GOOD. And handled in a matter fit for any audience. But some could be misleading.
CHARACTERS
I did not connect with any of the characters. I liked some (Mr. Martin, Hollie, Jake) but not much of the main cast. Gemma was a strong main lead, but I didn't connect with her, to no fault of her own! I thought she had a great personal journey, overall.
The side characters were all well formed, as well, though a few of their stories weren't wrapped up by the end but that's fine!
I'll be putting my other thoughts in spoiler tags from now on, so read at your own risk!
-- Josiah. -- Lydia. -- MR. MARTIN!
CONTENT
A clean novel, overall, one of the cleanest I've read involving these topics. Mentions of profanity. Mentions of drinking, being drunk, and underage drinking. The childbirth, pregnancy, and periods were all lightly described, not too bad. Mentions of domestic abuse and assault.
OVERALL
I thought this book was sweet, but I didn't connect as much as I'd like, though this story NEEDED to be told. We need more books like it! We need more books showing hope for the broken.
*clamps hand over mouth to keep from blurting out everything that was so awesome about it*
Review to come nearer to publication. :)

JUST READ FOR THE SECOND TIME... *swoons*
Miss Abigayle’s writing style has an old-fashioned feel to it that absolutely sucks you into the story while giving you the warm fuzzies. I loved how well-rounded the characters were (EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!) and how I could relate to each one in different dimensions. Even the “villain” character…I felt so sorry for him. Maybe I shouldn’t, because I didn’t like him and I wanted to hug him all at the same time, but…. Wow. It’s rare for me to find a book I enjoyed this much. While Martin Hospitality isn’t exactly what could be considered an “edge of your seat adventure”, it certainly holds its own in a world full of YA adventure novels. This is the kind of story that you want to curl up with and forget life’s problems for a few hours. I am SO EXCITED for book two!!!
To put it simply, I just love this book. I heard so much about it that I decided to get it, and I am SO happy I did.
The things I like:
- Let's just start with the main character, Gemma. I am so fond of her. I call her Gem, just because. Yes, she has a rough background and has made her share of bad mistakes, but she's still determined, caring, and kind. And she likes to say "y'all"! I found that fun. :) She feels older and more responsible than other YA main characters, probably because she's been living on her own and is having a baby. Speaking of the baby, it's nice and new for me to see a baby in a book. Especially the main character's baby!
- Then, the Martins. I absolutely love the Martins. They are my new favorite fictional family. There are twelve of them and having such a huge family to get to know and keep track of was fascinating. In my opinion, the author did a wonderful job of making them all unique and memorable. For instance, the names are really cool - Mariah, Lisabeth. January? I love families and sibling relationships in books! The little ones in here are really sweet. I like having children in books a lot. Often they seem to be just something for the main character to protect, but in here they are as close friends as anyone else. The Martins are so kind. They are ordinary people but they take everyday opportunities to share the love of God with others.
- The romance is very well done. I stress here that I like how it's done. I knew it was coming because I heard other people talking about it, but it can't really be called romance until at least a third or a quarter way through the book. There is some romance going on with the other Martin children as well, and it's really sweet. It's like watching your siblings or best friends get married!
- There are a lot of surprises and twists. And let me tell you, I WAS surprised. Also there is a great amount of coincidences. It amount of coincidences would probably be quite impossible in real life, but I rather like them in books. It makes it all feel very connected, and I like seeing how the author weaves details together.
- Let me talk for a moment about the issues brought up - for instance, that Gemma is pregnant but not married. I am thankful to the author for bringing it up. YA books seem to display and champion romance and "true love" - but they don't often warn against the dangers and bad consequences of getting too deeply involved before marriage. And even as Abi calls attention to these issues, she does it in a good way. It's never inappropriate or too heavy or too dark or depressing.
- The rest of the characters. They all are just different and terrific and either they make me mad or sad or they make me smile and laugh.
- The themes and lessons - this includes what I just talked about in the previous paragraph. Also, I am talking about the themes of forgiveness, starting over, love and kindness, and trust.
- I can relate to a lot! For instance: - Homeschooling? I'm homeschooled! - The setting. I know what it's like to live in a farming area, in the middle of cornfields, "in the middle of nowhere". The rural area and the church people remind me of my experiences. - Farmers' Market! - Birthdays and other such celebrations and festivities. - Little children and younger siblings! All of this probably made it very easy for me to imagine and envision what was going on!
Two more reasons I loved this, though this might not affect your opinion: - I actually bought a brand new copy. I own this book. It makes it very precious to me. And the cover is gorgeous! - It was written by a young, home schooled, Christian writer who is a blogger! Someone I know. Sort of. :D (come to think of it, this might affect your opinion!)
All in all, this is a beautiful book. It well deserves a place on my shelf of favorites! Those of you who haven't read this yet, you need to! And if you read this, Abi, just want you to know, you've done amazing! Thanks!
Martin Hospitality is a great book with a unique story line. I haven't read very many books from the perspective of a single, pregnant girl. I loved how all the characters developed through the story. Abi does a great job with all the characters, making me sympathetic to almost everyone in his own unique way. She does an amazing job handling Christianity and the subject of pregnancy before marriage; and I really appreciated that. The romance was also really great. It was mushy at all and that was a little bit of a breath of fresh air for me. Not that I don't like mushy stuff, just that that is all that seems to be portrayed in romance these days. I can't wait for the sequel to come out!
So...I may have forgotten that I promised a full review upon publication...and this wonderful book has been published for a year now???!!!? *coughs awkwardly* First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY "MARTIN HOSPITALITY"! Second, apologies for taking so long to get this review done. *shakes head* I'm hopeless, guys. Utterly hopeless. But my review is HERE NOW. You're welcome. B-)
Here is where I put aside a section for gushing about the book. BECAUSE I REALLY LOVED IT!!! I was given the delightful job (though it could hardly be called a job) of beta-reading "Martin Hospitality" last year and enjoyed every minute of it. :) Gemma is both loveable and easy to relate to as she tries to cope with first a new environment and then having everything coming crashing down around her later. The Martin's are a beautiful example of a harmonious (but still imperfectly human) Christian family who seek to glorify God with their everyday life. Some of them grew nearer and dearer to my heart than others, but I loved them all. <3 (*whispers* Josiah + Gemma = TOTALLY ADORABLE...just saying) Gemma's baby alone makes the whole book worth reading again. I actually fell in love with that little tyke and all its cuteness. ^_^ I will refrain from giving spoilers, but you guys...*deep breath* YOU GUYS NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE, OK? Just...please go buy it and read it. For my sake. Please. The different settings are perfect, and the villain is shudder-worthy. Despite having a large number of minor characters running about in different parts of the book, Abi does a fantastic job keeping them unique from each other. Which I know, as an author myself, is a very hard thing to do. So, in a nutshell, here's my thoughts about the various parts of her book: The characters: sdlkqsrlkhasflkhafasflknafafslb <3333 The plot: AMAZING! The setting: I LOVE KANSAS. LIKE I SERIOUSLY WANT TO GO THERE. The villain: *shudders* perfectly horrible The themes and messages: In awe. I am in AWE. I loved how Abi was able to bring the gospel message into her book in an interesting, non "preachy" way. I loved how the Martin's answered Gemma's various questions with intelligent, thoughtful answers that made logical sense. I was so blessed and encouraged by this book, which I know was Abi's goal, and I know you will be too if you read it. Am I looking forward to more books by Abi? ABSOLUTELY. No questions there. And I'm currently awaiting her sequel to this book ("Martin Crossroads") VERY impatiently. What can I say? Patience has never been one of my strengths...especially when it comes to sequels of books I love. <3
Seriously, I will be shoving this book in people's faces because dang, Abi, your writing skills. <333
I didn't love it as much as I thought I would? Which was a little disappointing. But in the end, I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. ;)
SO. Let's get a proper review down, shall we?
Likes:
- The Martinsssss. They were seriously the best! I just loved every scene that involved them.
- Josiah. Just...Josiah, folks. <3 HE WAS SO AMAZING. I savored every scene that was from his POV.
- The writing style.GOSH. Abi is like a writing genie! I aspire to be half the writer she is, honestly. She has such a great, flowing style that suits this book perfectly.
- The simplicity. It takes place in Kansas, which is the perfect setting, in my opinion. I loved the simple, joyful lives that the Martins lived out in the rural midwest. It just made me feel so fulfilled.
- The themes. I loooooved the redemption themes woven throughout. <3
Dislikes:
- Not enough of the Martins. I was so sad when I discovered how little of the Martins I actually got to see. THEY'RE THE BEST, OKAY?
- It was mostly from Gemma's POV. Don't get me wrong, I like Gemma. A lot. But I just got a little tired of her POV, and I honestly wanted more of Josiah. *coughs* At least it made me savor his scenes all the more!
- I got a little tired of the things happening in Gemma's life. Now, I'll say it again: I like Gemma. Buuuuut her life wasn't all that interesting when she was on her own. *hides* Thankfully, I was interested enough to keep reading. :)
All in all? I REALLY liked this book, and I would totally recommend it! It's one of those books that's probably not completely up my alley...so my dislikes are probably more of an it's-me-not-you thing.
(But guys, can we talk about that gorgeous cover?! I'M IN LOVE.)
After devouring historical fiction books lately, it was nice to take a break and read a contemporary. Still love historical so much, but this book is set apart from others I've read in this genre. There's much more hope presented in the Christian characters, and the love presented by the Martins was convicting to me.
I absolutely loved the Martin's big family, because I know exactly what it's like living in a big household. So many of the little things with the kids and interactions were so much like mine, and it made me smile. I understand some of the misgivings about Mr. Martin, but I was fine with him...actually my biggest gripe about him was that he wasn't involved more with the story.
Gemma had my full sympathy. I really did love her and the progression of her walk with the Lord. There were a few details with her story that seemed unnecessary (Bradley, for instance), and sometimes the mistakes Gemma made in the past were a little too smoothed over. It wasn't that she didn't regret those choices, but there didn't seem to be a big effect left with her from them. I would have loved to see more of Hollie at the end as well. She was an amazing friend! Farris was an adorable baby and he had my undying love from the moment he was born ;) I loved the details about birthing at home and all that...I love characters who do things different from the norm!
I'm sad to say that I didn't love Josiah as much as I thought. I'm not saying I disliked him, but he didn't really make me that interested in him. Sometimes he hovered on a little too "good", although the author never presented him as perfect. And then that incident toward the end sadly made me unsympathetic. It was a little too typical!
Overall, I love the spiritual content and how tough questions are answered. It wasn't my most favorite read, but I do recommend the book and look forward to keeping an eye out on other books by this author :)
Oh my goodness, where to start? I loved this book so much, thus, the reason it only took me roughly 36 hours to read it. :P
This book was very well written, I didn't find it cliche at all. The plot twists definitely surprised me, which is kinda hard to do because I can usually tell what's coming. There were quite a few times when I thought, "Are you sure this is the first book she's ever published?"
At first, because there are so many Martins, I wondered if that was going to be to many characters. But Miss Abigayle Claire did a really good job, I actually felt like I kinda knew what each and every character was like, even though Gemma doesn't have much interaction with most of them. I do wish we could have been in Josiah's head a little more, to get to know him a little better. I found Mr. Martin very intriguing, and I really want to know more about his backstory (if I remember correctly, it said that Josiah had never met his paternal grandparents).
There was quite a bit of action that happened towards the end that had my heart pounding. There were a few things that didn't seem to get wrapped up, but since there is going to be at least one more book, this doesn't really bother me. (It would if it were a standalone) So it left me wondering what is going to happen, and I can't wait to read the next book.
To be honest, this book brought tears to my eyes, and, let me tell you, very few books accomplish that. It greatly exceeded my expectations for an author who has only just been published. :)
Ok, so I'm just getting around to reviewing this book, but let me say... it was amazing!
This was my first indie published book I had read that was over 300 pages. When I got the book, I was actually surprised (and quite literally squealed when I got the package in the mail) to see how thick the book was! And the cover! *more squealing* Like, I had to take a moment to "pet" it! (I know, I'm one of those crazy bookworms!)
Anyway, moving right along with this review... I thought the story inside was just as good as it's beautiful cover! As the story opened, I was for sure I had read something similar to it before, I don't know where. And as the story built, I fell in love with it! Gemma is a gem, she really is! She was my favorite character. <3
Overall, this book was such a fun read! (I got the privilege to take Martin Hospitality with me on vacation so I thoroughly enjoyed reading it on the beach!) I highly recommend getting yourself a copy!
I decided to read this book due to the raving reviews I had read from many of my friends-not to mention the story looked interesting. But, to be honest, I was not expecting something this good.
Did Martin Hospitality have flaws? Yes! Of COURSE IT DID! There were several times where I got a bit confused with how Ms. Claire wrote something, there were most certainly times when I didn't always agree with her characters perspectives or beliefs 100%, but it didn't matter. Ms. Claire has written something truly beautiful, something so many other young authors like her don't even come close to.
Martin Hospitality was beautiful. The heart behind it-the purpose of showing that God loves and has saved ANYONE who has done ANYTHING. Christian genres need MORE of this. The real hard truths of the brokenness of this world and the people in it balanced out beautifully with tasteful writing that doesn't dwell overmuch.
Gemma was such a sweetheart. I loved her and baby Farris so much. I was so easily drawn in to her emotions, pains, and triumphs. She was beauty from ashes. Well done, Ms. Claire!
Josiah! (Does he have a marriageable best friend or brother around somewhere? Cause, let's be real, I want a kind man like that for my husband!)
Mr. Martin. Honestly, I really loved his character. I have seen a lot of Christian husbands and fathers like him-ones who are, honestly, hypocritical, harsh, unkind, and judgmental. (He was no where near as bad as some folks I know of) His character arc was balanced, well done, and really interesting.
FARRIS! <3 <3 <3 Need I say more?!
The rest of the Martins. They were sweet, I loved the big family hubbub they brought into the book and the way they sorta did what they did and didn't care a mite what anyone else thought.
All the other characters were well balanced as well, Ms. Claire did a wonderful job. (I liked Hollie a lot! :D)
The plot was amazing, though a little slow at parts, I really liked the ebb and flow of it. It was focused while bringing in the real, mundane life parts of it.
still love this sweet, heartwarming book. cannot wait for Martin Crossroads !
/ 4 stars
i've been wanting to read this book for awhile, and then suddenly discovered it's on kindle unlimited! so yes, i read it in the space of one day. ;)
/ what i loved - um, basically everything? it's such a sweet, cute, heartwarming book. i finished it with a smile and now i really need the sequel. like now. it's like a contemporary retelling of The Waltons , which is one of my favorite shows. - the portrayal of siblings & their relationships. coming from a large family, it's difficult for me to read books that have large families bc so often, they're inaccurately portrayed. it's obvious that Abi has a big family, bc she wrote the Martins perfectly . they're kind & loving, but like any siblings, can still get on each other's nerves and bug each other. - how Gemma truly grew throughout the book. i could literally see her growing in her relationship with God, and it was so authentic and genuine without being cliche or cheesy. also Farris is absolutely adorable. - the ending. *squeals* - how the difficult topic of teen pregnancy was handled. Abi did a wonderful job handling such a sensitive issue, and the way that Gemma was determined to support Farris was admirable and inspiring. - and guys, THAT COVER. <3 <3 it's so gorgeous. now i need to save up and buy a paperback copy of this beautiful book. ;)
/ what i disliked - um, nothing major. ;) just that i felt that some characters weren't as developed as others (i.e., Hollie). i feel like i didn't get to know Hollie as much as i wanted to....and some other parts like - also, Mr. Martin was a little iffy. i totally get how he was wary of bringing strangers into the family, but several times he was extremely rude to Gemma in front of the whole family. -
guys, if you haven't read "Martin Hospitality", then go read it. now. it's gorgeous and sweet and heartwarming, reminiscent of Little House on the Prairie , Love Comes Softly , and The Waltons .
This is a book about second chances. It’s about forgiveness, and love, and family, and hope. I finally got the opportunity to read this lovely book as a kindle freebie and I'm so glad I did.
The characters were amazing. I loved the Martin kids - although their homeschool experience is different than mine, they still felt realistic, without the stereotypes that so often come with homeschooled characters. They all had different personalities, which I appreciated. I also liked the character bios at the front, since I got them a bit mixed at first. Writing a large cast of characters is VERY difficult, and Miss Claire did a wonderful job of it!
I loved Gemma. She was beautiful and broken and Her character arc was amazing and Also, Josiah is the sweetest. I love him, a LOT. He’s one of my favorite characters in a long time. I loved all the children characters, and felt like they were written well. Two of the characters were absolute creeps
The setting was gorgeous, and described it so beautifully! <3
Also, yes. There are touchy issues in this book. But I felt like Miss Claire did a good job of not going into too much detail, and it never made me feel uncomfortable. However, that’s my opinion and I’d recommend reading other reviews first.
I read the entire thing in one day – a major accomplishment for me, nowadays. I didn’t want to do anything but read until my head ached.
I only have a few problems with this book. The writing occasionally seemed clumsy, but I can definitely tell Miss Claire has improved, as I’ve read her novella Andora’s Folly. The second problem I had was Mr. Martin. He said things several times that made me go, “Excuse you? What did you just say??” And the last thing was that the ending felt rushed. I would have liked just a bit more resolution, and some ends tied up more neatly.
But overall, I loved it. It gave me the strongest feeling of home, and that’s one of the best feelings a book can ever give me.
