Roommate Romance

Rate this book
Falling in love is not on Allison Lawson's to do list. As a professional stage manager, she's got a plan for everything - and she doesn't like surprises. So when she shows up at the apartment she's subletting, the last thing she's expecting is a roommate. Especially a tall, hunky one.

Shane Garrett is back in Brooklyn. After his parents died five years ago, he moved upstate to take care of his younger sister. But now she's off at college, and he's ready to return to the bachelor life he used to have: living on his own, a fridge full of beer, and a new girl every night. But that didn't include a surprise appearance of a sexy brunette in his shower. He hadn't even taken her out to dinner yet.

Now Allie and Shane are sharing a one bedroom apartment - and bedroom eyes. Neither can deny the sparks that are flying between the two of them, but a relationship is not on Allie's agenda. Can Shane convince Allie that you can't plan for love?

4.5 stars!

I don't know what it is, but I have been on a book roll after months of being in a slump.

Roommate Romance is cute and perfect. It is well written and absolutely the lighthearted fun read I was looking for.

Shane is imperfect, but perfect. He will make you swoon, even just a little bit

Allie is fun and funny. She's so uptight in the best of ways. I'm seriously wishing we were best friends.

Maggie Riley writes with wit and a crisp clean style. Her voice is strong, sweet and funny.

I'm looking forward to more from Miss Riley!
I absolutely would recommend this book!

Allie Lawson is a planner and an obsessive list maker- which should mean things shouldn’t go wrong, but that’s isn’t always the way. When her unconventional meeting with Shane occurs in the flat she is subletting, it doesn’t matter that she isn’t looking for a roommate, she has one. It also doesn’t matter that lusting after her new roommate or even falling in love with him, isn’t on one of her lists…some things you can’t plan for and Shane is determined to prove to her that some things not on lists, are the best things that can happen!

“Everything had started out going exactly to plan. Because that’s what I did. I planned. I was Allie Lawson, wrangler of schedules and queen of to-do lists.”

This was a fun, quirky, romance which was the perfect read for a rainy afternoon and kept me thoroughly entertained all the way through!

“Everything would work out perfectly. Because the universe and I had come to an understanding. If I had a list, I was in control. Things would be fine. Except they weren’t fine. Despite my lists and my planning, the last twenty-four hours had been a complete and utter disaster.”

I loved that these two were so opposite in their personalities and that when they came together the chemistry was just explosive. Allie was a planner, she couldn’t let things happen by chance, everything had to be thought through and nothing taken by chance. She was definitely a quirky character and I could actually really relate to her because I am also a huge planner and when she was with Shane she allowed herself to let her hair down a little bit and allow some things to happen by chance- although it took an awful lot of convincing by Shane.

“What the hell was I thinking? Problem was, I knew exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking that I wanted Shane.”

Shane was a very easy character to love. He was fun, kind, caring and just really happy. The way he looked after his younger sister was so swoon worthy and how much he wanted Allie to take a chance with him and realise some of the best things happen by chance was just so lovely!

“It was my own fault that I fell for her, but that didn’t mean I was going to open myself up to the possibility of more pain. It was better if all this ended now.”

We had a lot of light hearted humour and feel good moments throughout. This really was just about two people coming together and watching their relationship grow and change into something special. We had some angst, what with Allie’s commitment issues but we also had Shane’s determination and passion which was so easy to read about.

“This is my list of reasons why I would be a really, really great roommate.”

Overall this was a lovely, easy read that had just enough of everything you want in a romance to keep you entertained and put a smile on your face. You get what you want with a romance- two likeable and relatable characters, coming together and falling in love during a not always smooth ride! Great read for a lazy Sunday afternoon!

4.5 Wishing for a Roommate JUST like Shane Stars

Roommate Romance is a wonderful, well-written, entertaining and enjoyable love story between two TOTALLY different people....polar opposites, in fact, but you know the saying, right? Opposites attract?!

Well, Shane and Allie are definitely that! And when these two are thrown together to share one small 1-bedroom apartment in Manhattan? The chemistry is explosive!! Shane is someone who goes with the flow while Allie has to make lists of pros/cons for EVERYTHING before making a decision and has to be in control...always! I found her quirky personality very engaging (even though I wanted to strangle her, at times!) and I eventually fell in love with her ALMOST as hard as I fell for Shane!! Shane, of the work-roughened hands (from building furniture while wearing a tool belt *sigh*), the love he has for his younger sister Megan.

I really enjoyed this book from Maggie Riley and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys light-hearted (with a touch of angst that MAY leave a tear or two in your eyes), strangers-to-lovers romances that make you laugh, make you HOT, make you fall in love with down-to-earth, likeable characters! I would DEFINITELY read more from this author!

Allie works in theatre and has her career plan mapped out. She is a list maker and can’t understand how people cope without lists. How does anything ever get accomplished without first a list?

She has made the big move to New York in the hopes of getting a stage manager role on a Broadway show. Thankfully a friend has offered up her apartment, while she is out of town, as temporary accommodation while she looks to get settled in this new city. What she hadn’t expected was to find that she also would have a room mate too.

A one bedroom apartment and two people. One a very pissed of woman and a slightly bemused man.

Shane is the owner of the building and was delighted to have the opportunity to stay in his tenant’s apartment so he could make headway on some projects he is working on. Therefore, walking in on a gorgeous, naked and wet Allie is a pleasant surprise, well for him anyway. She is stunning. She is also furious and extremely embarrassed.

'I wasn't sure what was worse - that I was standing naked in front of a complete and utter stranger or that I was wishing I had shaved my legs first.'

Despite the situation they find themselves in, they find a way to make it work, albeit temporarily. There is huge attraction between them, probably lead by the fact that neither of them have gotten laid in a very long time. After denying themselves they eventually agree to scratch each other’s itch and there is a LOT of scratching! However, FWB don’t always work out, not when feelings come into play. Can they really walk away from each other now that things have gone beyond physical?

'She wanted me at night. When we were alone. I thought that would be enough. It usually was with other women - or it had been. But not with Allie. I wanted more.'

This was a fun, light-hearted romance that was easy to read, not too much angst and no gut wrenching twists to deal with. I like books like this, easy to get lost in these and come out the other side with a nice warm feeling inside.

Roommate Romance is a great book! I loved Allie and Shane. They become roommates in an one bedroom apartment by accident, but they make it work. Allie has a dream and works hard for it. She doesn’t want a relationship, but she can’t keep fighting against the attraction she has for Shane. Shane is working hard to make his business a success again. He’s talented and an amazing brother. He likes Allie and he’s attracted to her from the start. It could have easily been a 5 star book, but Allie’s stubbornness was a little too much sometimes.

I went into Roommate Romance expecting to fully love it. This is one of my favorite tropes and it's been a while since I've read one so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything about it that was memorable. It was enjoyable, but it was eh at the same time.

I love reading about couples having fun and enjoying their time together, but I also like to see depth in a relationship so I can actually believe their love. Well, Shane and Allie were very physical and rarely had in-depth conversations or would do anything besides being physical. I'm pretty sure I was rolling my eyes a lot when I realized not much would happen between the two of them. Also, Allie's family frustrated me a lot. They wouldn't support her dream to want to stay in NY and work in Broadway or anything similar to that. They just wanted her to go back to Nebraska and start dating her ex.

There were four characters that made me like this book and had me giggling a little bit. Reagan and Joanna were two crazy ladies that I really liked. I was honestly more interested in their boring, work life than Shane and Allie. Josh is another character who I need more of. He's Allie's brother and I seriously think he deserves a happy ending and with Reagan! I would totally read their story.

Overall, Roommate Romance is unoriginal, cliche, and the plot is overused. There weren't memorable things in it. I wish I could say more positive things about it.

I received an eARC from the author for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This review was originally posted on Latte Nights Reviews.

There was nothing really attention grabbing in this book that made me way to continue reading. I've seen some good reviews so maybe it's just me. I don't love insta attraction type of books and this seemed very superficial...

Such a sweet and fun, easy romance!

Shane and Allie are such complete opposites, they're like a male/female version of the odd couple. Accidentally (or was it???) thrown together as roommates, they have to figure out how to navigate around each other, all while fighting the growing attraction between them.

Roommate Romance is a terrific little flirty, sexy, delightful book that was just so enjoyable to read. It's the perfect book if you need a break from the real world, or some of heavier angst and drama filled books out there. It's a feel good story that will leave you with a smile on your face.

I had high expectations. Unfortunately, it didn't left me satisfied.

I loved the premisses of the story, but was missing the depth to the story. I fully expect to be banged with anger and passion with roommate stories. This is what I crave for.

After spending her life on the road as a stage manager from one show to the next, Allison is looking for some stability in her life and wants to work on Broadway. Her best friend and ex-college roomie Liz are headed on tour as an actress and offered her apartment to Allison for the next three months. Allison has a series of job interviews lined up and an apartment and is ready to rock New York. He is looking forward to it since his studio is on the bottom floor. Well, they both can't stay here, can they? What begins as roommates though starts to develop a friendship as Allison is looking for apartments none seem in her pay bracket especially when she doesn't get one of the jobs she wants and finds herself working in a new theater doing avant-garde work. During the book, romance and chemistry blooms between Allie and Shane but is it just a fling or something more? What will happen when Allie is offered her dream job - traveling on the road with a Broadway show? This is super cute and starts off really funny.  I would have given it 5 stars if the laugh out loud comedy had kept up throughout the entire story, but it didn’t.  That’s ok because the cuteness and the charm never ceased.  I could easily see this being made into one of those romantic comedies that everybody loves and flocks to at the show.

Allie is a super driven stage manager who has her life mapped out one list at a time.  Living with a man is not on that list.   Shane is a hunky carpenter who is looking to relive his bachelor days before the responsibility of taking care of his baby sister was thrust upon him.  He wants the freedom to bring a woman to his place.  You can imagine them both shocked when they discover that their mutual friend, sublet each of them the same apartment for the same period of time.
Their first meeting was priceless!

“I wasn’t sure what worse- that I was standing naked in front of a complete and utter stranger, or that I was wishing I had shaved my legs first.”

In the beginning of the book, there were a few times I laughed like a loon that was one of them.  Allie was a character who was neurotic and endearing all in one package and it was hard pressed not to love her.  The story is cute and charming and has some pretty steamy scenes with the two of them.  I really enjoyed Roommate Romance and I am giving it 4 Boundless Stars.

4 1/2 stars!

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

I live in NYC and I love theater. Especially musical theater. When my friends want to know what show to see, they ask me. So when I started reading this book and the author dropped some quality theater references in the first chapter, I knew I would like it.

Allie has been assistant stage managing touring productions for a while now, but now it's time for her to go back to NYC and try to make it on Broadway. Her friend Liz has offered up her apartment to sublet, but when Allie shows up, it turns out that someone is already using it. Shane, the landlord, uses one of the first floor apartments as his workshop and has been crashing Liz's apartment. A bit taken back at first, Allie and Shane decide that cohabiting is something they can handle until Allie finds her own apartment to rent.

The two of them become friends and Allie even helps out Shane's sister Megan with her stage fright. But as they get to know each other, it becomes very clear that they have feelings that go way beyond friendship.
“Shane,” she said, her voice low and sultry.

Nope. Not my imagination.

As if drawn by a magnet, I put down my tools and walked towards her. As I did so, she shrugged her jacket off her shoulders and it slid to the floor, her gorgeous curves within arm’s reach. And reach for them I did.

Without another word, I took her in my arms and kissed her. And she kissed me back. Hard. With one hand, I reached out and slammed the door of the workshop closed, and then pressed her up against it. Her mouth was like heaven against mine and I lost myself in the pure pleasure of kissing her. I dragged my tongue along her bottom lip and with a sigh, she deepened the kiss, her tongue now tangling with mine.

Her lips were still chilled from the outside air, making her mouth even hotter, more inviting. She tasted like fall and champagne. Even though the workshop had heat, Allie shivered in my arms, and I pulled her tighter. I was going to warm her up from the inside.

“Hold on.” I pulled back slightly.

Her eyes were dark with lust, but narrowed in confusion. I took her bag from her and reached in, finding her phone, turning it to vibrate.

“The last thing I want is to get interrupted again,” I told her, and I tugged her back into my arms, kissing her deeply.

She didn’t miss a beat. Smiling against my mouth, her eager fingers began unbuttoning my shirt, sliding inside to touch the bare skin beneath. I leaned into her touch, needing to feel her naked body against mine. Before I could even start freeing her of her clothes, my shirt was off, and she was already focused on my jeans. But her hands stilled at my waist.

“A tool belt,” she breathed, before looking up at me with a wicked glint in her eyes. “I always liked men in tool belts.”

Fuck. I didn’t think I could have gotten harder, but apparently I was wrong. I had never understood why women found tool belts so sexy, but at that moment I didn’t give a rat’s ass about the psychology behind it. I just wanted Allie to keep looking at me that way. Like she wanted me to lap her up. Something I was more than eager to do.

“I could keep it on if you want,” I teased, but she shook her head.

“There’s only one tool I’m interested in tonight,” she said, running her palm over that particular tool.
I loved the dynamic between these two. Their chemistry was off the charts and once they crossed that line between roommates and lovers, there was no turning back. Shane was the sweetest and I just loved them!

And there are some great secondary characters that grabbed my attention. The first being Allie's brother Josh. He is in a bit of a transition period in his life and it looks like New York City will be the setting of the next chapter in his life. And then there is Allie's coworkers, Joanna & Reagan. They each have their own stories to tell and I can't wait to read them!

Discovering new authors is one of the reasons why I love doing this. The romance part of the book was great and then throw in the theater aspect and I loved it. I look forward to reading whatever Maggie gives us next.

I'm here trying to write a review for this awesome book and everytime I think of Allie and Shane I get all giddy and stuff.

“And while I could appreciate the enthusiasm behind the singing— and there was plenty of it— the last thing I wanted to do at the moment was deal with the fact that there was a stranger in my shower. A tone-deaf stranger.”

Roommate Romance is sweet and fun and everything you want in a book. Each and every one of the characters is amazing.

“I wasn’t sure what was worse— that I was standing naked in front of a complete and utter stranger, or that I was wishing I had shaved my legs first. Because whoever this stranger was, he was goddamn gorgeous.”

Allie is a strong and confident woman, who fights for what she wants and works hard to make it happen. She's passionate about what she does and isn't afraid of admitting it.

“She laughed, and something in my chest twisted . She had a really great laugh. I liked her, I realized. She had a terrible singing voice, but she was nice and funny and pretty. I got that strange twinge in my chest again . Near my heart.”

Shane. OH MY GOD SHANE. I love him. He can be cocky but he is such a good guy, starting by being an excellent brother to Megan (who by the way, is incredible. She is mature and a good sister and also funny). He embraces whatever weirdness Allie thinks she has and doesn't judge her for being who she is but instead he supports her in every way. He is loving and hilarious for real!

“You’ve got to stop doing that,” he said. “Doing what?”.-“Having sex with your food” he told me.-I felt my face go red. “I do not!”

Joanna and Reagan are the best of the best. Complete opposites. One is the brain, the other one is the soul and they have Allie as a heart. I love that they, like Allie, pursue their dreams even though it may seem scary sometimes.

“It was official. I had lost it. And I didn’t even care.”

And Josh and Emily. I wish they were part of my family. Josh is a sweet older brother and Emily is a cute and smart kiddo.

“The world spun in dizzying circles around me as Shane took me in his arms and kissed me.”

Pretty please, read this book. Is amazing and romantic and super fun. I love it so much. I'm quite sure I'll read it over and over again. And I'm pretty sure I've found a new and a perfect book boyfriend named Shane, who says things like this:

“You know what Reagan said? About you being the heart of this theatre? I knew exactly what she meant. Because you're my heart too.”

Roommates by incident but true match obviously? This is the story of Roommate Romance.

A player and live on the moment guy met the sexy woman who loves to do list whenever she needs, thanks to a common friend, and some mistake later have to live together in a one bedroom apartment, you know that it’s the beginning of something great and entertaining and it was good.

Even if it was of predictable, especially about the storyline, the banter was good as the characters. I had fun and entertained.

While reading it, I felt very connected to Shane, about how he was giving everything he could to take care of his sister, and for a player and someone who seemed more lighthearted and I was really surprised by this character. True, Sexy and kind. Definitely book boyfriend material!

Allie was someone who loved to plan, to live her dream as the stage director. So when she met Shane, she felt a little disrupted on her plans. He was a distraction she couldn’t and shouldn’t be tempted for. I really think that being an independent and strong woman who could take care of her own was great but her constant hesitations and commitment issues was just annoying sometimes.

Anyway, I really enjoyed Roommate Romance. Shane and Allie had great chemistry and I had fun reading about these two roommates falling in love. Refreshing, Funny, very sweet and sexy.

Can’t wait to read more books by Maggie Riley.

I had to chuckle within the first few pages of this book because like Allie, I'm a planner; not quite as list obsessed but I can relate to the pro / con list. Allie has a big decision to make if she wants to make it on Broadway and she makes her lists and packs everything she has in a duffle bag and backpack, hops on a plane from sweet home town Nebraska to the big, smelly - sawdust smelly, city of New York! Her plans include staying at her best friend's (Liz) tiny one bedroom place in Brooklyn until she gets a job as stage manager, a job she's good at and loves doing because 'it makes order out of the chaos', and her own place. Everything goes to plan, kind of, until Shane interrupts her dying cat rendition of "I Will Always Love You." Shane is the landlord of her best friend's apartment building whom Liz said could stay in her apartment while she's way on production. The Big Oops on Liz's part is that she forgot she told both Shane & Allie they could both stay at the apartment and now they have to figure out how to live together, all three of them....Allie, Shane, and their shared lust.

This is a fun, flirty romance, with relateable characters that you'll love reading. There is an easy conversational tone to this book, like Allie and Share are talking directly to you, telling your their story.

(3.5 stars)

Allie is finally going to try and get her dream job as a stage manager on Broadway, so off to New York she goes. Thankfully her bestie said she could stay at her place while she was out of town for a while ... only problem is, the guy that Liz also promised could stay in the one bedroom apartment.

Shane is finally going to make a go of his furniture making business, again. He gave it all up when his parents died, when he got custody of his little sister. Now she is all grown up and going to college, he now has time for what he wants, and what better way to start then to move into the apartment above his shop, until fate threw in the girl that will also be staying there as well... just how long will he make it on the couch. Can Shane get his uptight roommate to come out of her shell just a bit?

So this had some funny bits, I loved every conversation that Allie had with her parents, they were a hoot. This has some good sexy times, and of course a bit of drama. Other than that I found this to fall a bit flat for me. I give this 3.5 stars.

A quick sexy, fun not overly angsty enjoyable read !!!!

List, lists and more lists is how Allie lives her life she has an obsession with them that was kinda cute but annoying but whatever floats your boat right ? !!!! Meets Shane landlord and her new roommate by the mistake there first meeting was unconventional that's for sure.
Shane is an amazing big brother and an awesome caring person who wouldn't want a guy like that "swoon" and Allie well she just wants to succeed as a stage manager on a big production but with pressure from her family to leave New York and head home to Nebraska will these two get there happy ever after ????

This was my first read by Maggie Riley and it won't be my last

While this is a great fun quick read and most definitely hot and steamy there is little else to this book between the main 2 characters. Shane and Allie have all the chemistry they need and could dream of but the don't seem to have much depth as individual characters. I love the romance and fun but I want to be able to connect with my characters so I feel invested in the book. This wasn't a bad book by any means. The parents are a hoot, love the two ladies in the theater group I even like Shane and Allie. The supporting cast are who makes this book worth reading and supply most of the laughs.

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

Consigliatissimo.

So, I suppose I have to thank the author Penny Wylder for e-mailing this book among others as one of her favorites. Yeah, I enjoyed it too.

The plot seemed a bit weird at first. How disorganized Liz had to actually be to let two people stay at the same time in her flat without even realizing. However, as I got past that, the story developed quite nicely.

Shane put his whole life on hold after his parents passed away so he could take care of his younger sister. He gave up on his dream job and tried to be a good influence on Megan. When Megan goes to college, he is ready to go back to his bachelor life and also, his job.

Allie is a girl who dreams big and chases those dreams. She wants to direct shows on Broadway and desperately trying to prove her family that she can actually make it herself. As much as I liked Shane, Allie started to really annoy me near the end. She was unfair not only to him, but also to Joanna and Reagen. She really has commitment problems. Girl just can't stay faithful to what she does. She took a job at a theater and yet, she did not tell her co-workers that she actually does not want to stay. Which I found really disturbing. They treated her as one of the team, while she just couldn't wait to get out of Shane's flat and get a bigger and more important job. And she goes all offended when Shane calls her on her BS.

All in all, the story deserves five stars because of Shane, Josh and Emily. :-)) I wish we read more about Shane and Allie together, but a good part of the book focused on Allie's family problems or her theater. I wish we'd get a book on Josh's story as well. :-D

This is not a trope I normally read so I didn't have any expectations going in, I was pleasently surprised. I really enjoyed this book, I read it in one sitting. I loved Shane, he had put his life on hold to take care of his sister and was starting to live again. His character was loveable and at times swoon worthy. Allie was a bit quirky, she had a list for everything, didn't really go with the flow. The chemistry between them is off the charts and literally scorches the pages, at times I wish there had been more of a romance between them, not just what happened in the bedroom. I loved Josh, I hope he gets his own book in the future, Joanna and Reagan were likeable too. Overall a good read, put some time aside as when you start you won't want to put it down.
