Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 7-8 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.

TBH I didn't really like the look of the story in Black Clover vol 7... Well we did get to meet the captains as they met with the wizard king to root out a traitor among themselves. I wasn't sad to see that captain go at all... Then the Black Bulls get a secret mission and its a chance for Noelle to shine (finally some girl power)... but I wasn't too interested in all the fish stuff, I found it dull at first... but the more I read the more I enjoyed it... we got to see what some of the other Bulls can do and that was super fun.

The plot continues into Black Clover vol 8 and Yami shows off why he's a captain... I just love it when he says "Surpass your limits. Right here, right now." Hahahhha like you have control over that?! But that's the kind of leader he is... He inspires and more importantly believes in you. (I want Yami as my captain!) Enemies become allies against a member of the third eye of the Midnight Sun. Asta learns to work together with his team... And it leads to some glorious battles!

That's another thing I really LOVE about Black Clover... It's about more than just Asta or Yuno and them being badass on their own... This is about squads, teamwork and working for the common good of the Clover kingdom, not just in general since they live in the same place but on the individual level too. And I really enjoyed seeing Noelle working to break free from the mental straight jacket her siblings have put on her mind that keeps her from doing magic the way she is able to... And positive female friendship too! You go Yuki Tabata...

Needless to say I went from being underwhelmed at the start of the next arc to blown away!! The thing is that battle manga can read depressingly the same. So the mangaka really has to work hard to keep the reader on there toes, to make it different and not in a contrived way. Everything arises quite naturally in the plot and that really goes a long way for me.

The art is constantly one upping itself in Black Clover and that is true in volume 7 and 8 too. The closeups of Noelle's face as she fights a REAL opponent... I really felt like I was there and witnessing a landmark battle for her. Asta also has some mega frames... GAHHHH he just won't give up no matter what and its glorious and beautiful! When he moves in front of Noelle... really you can't blame the girl for admiring him with what she's had to deal with due to family and the crap they give her.

Black Clover vol 7-8 turns out to be just as good as the previous 2 volumes... Why did I doubt for a second? Well I really didn't realize just how passionate and capable a storyteller Yuki Tabata is but it certainly shows in these volumes... I won't be doubting again. Black Clover is my favorite shonen battle manga!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

The first chapter was amazing. Then it fell down to predictable territory, unfortunately.

Black clover is really picking up steam. This arc was pretty good. There were a lot of fun character moments and some great action. We get to learn more about the Black Bulls and how many of the wizards powers work. The last pages in this volume will take your breath away. Tabata is starting to make this manga feel a bit different from what you have come to expect from shonen series.

Holy fuck, holy fuck, HOLY FLYING FUCKER FUCK, this volume was incredible!

Tabata once again shows his mastery of character development, chaotic yet enjoyable fight scenes, and phenomenal characters. We finally get backstory on Vanessa and Finral, as well as more backstory concerning Magna's and Luck's friendship, and all of it was great! Tabata is so good at showing character motivations, conflicts, and personalities in a concise yet heartfelt way. He doesn't rely on pages and pages of unnecessary character drama and monolouging, instead picking and choosing what he shows and letting those scenes and emotions speak for themselves. He's easily one of my favorite writers for this reason alone and I wish more writers would take cues from him.

But enough of that, let's talk about the badassery that was this volume! Holy shit, Charmy is one of my favorite characters in this series and her fight was equal parts hilarious and badass. Also, side note, it took me so long to realize that she's literally a wolf in sheep's clothing. You know, because she uses cotton magic that specifically manifests as a sheep, and she's really strong despite her childish and harmless appearance, and she gets scary violent when she feels her food will be taken from her. Just saying...

Learning about Grey's true identity was interesting and I'm curious to see where Tabata will go with this character. I love her design, she's so damn cute!

Vanessa and Noelle put in some work this volume and HOLY SHIT, Noelle just keeps getting better and better! When she took out that guy's arm I was like, "what the fucking what?! Where the fuck did that come from?!" Not that I'm complaining, but it was just so unexpected and incredible and I loved it! Also, Vanessa's magic is super interesting and really works for her character. Threads can be seen as weak and flimsy, just as Vanessa can be viewed as, but they're also unassuming and strong, capable of varying uses and flexible. I'm so glad I finally got to see her in action and she did not disappoint!

Finral's backstory explained a lot of his behavior and shows how the same magic can have different applications and all applications are worthy of praise. But more importantly, it was SO FUCKING DOPE seeing Finral, Vanessa, and Asta team up. I wasn't sure how their individual magic skills would work in this fight, but holy shit it was so cool!

Enough rambling, though. Suffice to say, this was an amazing volume that was a blast to read from start to finish. Loving this series the more I read!

The whole volume is one long epic-level fight, which actually doesn’t end and continues to the next one. It’s fine in terms of shonen manga, although there is not much battle tactics to care about. Just like always there has to be a cheap reason for why the battle doesn’t end sooner. The rookie heroes have to fight the villain without the aid of their shinigami captain because the moment he tries to go help them, the Muten Roshi clone creates a barrier that traps him inside. But then the captain breaks it with brute force. But then there is another villain outside who creates a second barrier that still keeps him trapped. Basically, the author keeps making lazy excuses for why the captain can’t end this battle in a few seconds.

Aside from that, the only other thing that happens is Grey revealing his true form. Instead of an ugly man, in reality he is a shy cute girl! Plus one to Asta’s harem and still zero to story, since this reveal had no impact on the terribly written plot.

Noelle actually does something, and we get some actually interesting fight strategy given spatial magic and thread magic affecting the look of the battlefield so much. The developments are still predictable, and the reasoning behind everything is very bland, but hey- boring is better than cringeworthy.

It’s amazing how one person can touch the lives of others in a way that inspires them to be better people. Thank you Asta ❤️

It was also great to know more about Vanessa and Finral’s background even if it was just a taster for more details to come 🙌😁

Continuing to love this series, as we follow the Black Bulls in the underwater temple, with major ‘distractions’ to their plans there. I love this series and the adventure it follows. Asta is a loud, dedicated boy with a strong goal of becoming the next wizard king in mind. Overall, another 5 star read (shocker), and will continue into book 9

Art for battle sequences was kind of sloppy, but this was still a fun read

full review

The battle in the underwater temple rages on! The Eye of Midnight Sun appeared abruptly on the scene, in the form of Vetto. Part of a group of powerful magic users known as the Third Eye, this guy is Trouble! Can any of our intrepid heroes stand against him?!

And the answer to that is – it doesn’t look like it! This entire volume is one big fight scene. The art for the battle sequences is a bit sloppy, and I had to give extra attention to some panels in order to understand what the heck was going on. There are so many speed lines, and explosive effects, and screen tone in general that the panels are cluttered and difficult to understand. This is the first time in the series that I’ve really felt out of my depth, and therefore distanced from the action.

Getting back to the story, I really enjoyed it. Most of the Black Bulls who traveled to the temple, as well as their new temple priest buddies, are drawn into this impossible fight. Yami and the high priest are trapped by the high priest’s spatial magic, and can’t leave until the contest is over. Oh, noes!! How can the Black Bulls emerge victorious with their strongest fighter, as well as their mentor and leader, trapped outside of the battle?

Things look really, really grim, as one by one, the Black Bulls are defeated. Then Asta, Noelle, Kahono, Vanessa, and Finral make their last stand. And it’s a doozy. Asta’s never say die attitude rallies the troops, but for how long? I was excited to see Noelle’s powers on display, as desperation makes her let loose – finally! Will they beat Vetto? I don’t know for sure, but make sure that you have volume 9 near at hand to find out!

4/5 Stars (%76/100)

It was definitely better than the previous one but there were some parts I still did not enjoy. Since this is a shounen series, I guess there are going to be many cliches and things you can guess but overall, Black Clover does a good job. The magic system is great as I mentioned previously in my reviews and it comes to the rescue many times in the series. The fight against Vetto was good but a bit predictable. The whole power of friendship thing was expected but I kind of enjoyed it. This arc is almost over and we learned more things about the bad guys.

The fight with Vetto, member of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, continues. The Black Bulls are up against a real challenge this time and it really feels like the stakes are high. Everyone has a bit of time to shine and we specifically have some spotlight shown on characters whose magic we hadn't explored much before (e.g. Vanessa and Finral). It was especially interesting to see them work together and find creative ways to fight this new enemy. There is also commentary explored on how characters in this world who are magic users heavily rely on magic to the point that it has become a hindrance in many ways. I know Asta stands out due to his lack of magic and that is a constant theme, however I think it also highlights how his approach to problem solving is different because he has experienced the world differently than other wizards. I'm looking forward to this being a plot point that is developed further. The Black Bulls have shown in this volume especially that Asta helps them think out of the box when it comes to utilizing their magic.

HANDS DOWN TO ALL OF THE BLACK BULLS AND THE TEMPLE WARRIORS. This is such a nerve wrecking volume.

Love all the short but deep backstories of each characters that even made the fight scenes more nerve wrecking and love how they just connect it to what’s the current scenes.

Noelle with her new magic spell, that was so dope. Luck and Magna working together and with their attack combo, it was amazing. Gauche, Grey and Magna, they were hilarious, especially Grey and her revelation, didn’t expect that.

And Vanessa, Finral and Asta. Boi these 3 literally is going to kill me with their dopeness in this volume. I’m so happy to see Finral’s development. Asta being a legend that he is, so inspiring tbh. I hope I had a mindset like he has. And can I just say how pretty Vanessa and Noelle is? And Charmy and Grey as well, hella cuties.

And I’m also frustrated with Captain Yami’s situation.

Overall this was such a dope volume. Glad to see the Black Bulls powers.

Probably the best volume to date.

We get a psycho piece of shit who is just going THROUGH the entire Bulls team. Not even giving them a chance to do shit. Just when you think one of the members pulls off a huge attack the bastard reminds them they are nothing. I love the fact this enemy just goes "Just because you scream and keep pushing forward doesn't mean you'll win" and basically laughs at that anime cliche. On top of that the fact they do little inside jokes "Don't think you're stronger because you somehow grew a third eye" makes me laugh.

Overall, SUPER fast paced and exciting volume. It also ends on a big explosive note. I wonder if they can actually beat this guy. A 4 out of 5.

4.75/5

Villain is very ho-hum, a flat character clearly just there as a device to show off the main characters' skills and make them level-up/bond. The writing also seems laughably stiff and over explanatory at times. Based on the fact that some of the dialogue reads very smoothly, I'm guessing this stiffness isn't a side effect of translation, but is more probably a reflection of the original writing in the series. Nonetheless, I like the art a lot. The battle sequences are pretty easy to follow and some of the pairings of fighting types are pretty interesting and entertaining. It feels like a manga that really wants to be a videogame...

Oooh...this was a very interesting volume. I love that Master Yami always supports and pushes everyone in the Black Bulls. I've come to enjoy it whenever he says "Surpass Your Limits. Right here. Right now." It makes me kind of want an art print that says that for when I need the motivation. And we definitely see Noelle do that in this volume, which was awesome. See, I really want to keep reading the volumes of this I have, but I also have a lovely TBR pile that I want to read as well. So I guess I'm going to have to set aside my obsession with Black Clover for just a little bit, and read some other stuff.

This was actually freaking fantastic! I loved every second! So many great team-ups. It was so nice seeing Luck and Magna in action together, and finally Finral joins the game as well (so turns out he was a brunette, did not see that one coming...). This had everything I wanted from a fighting scene:
-team ups
- sassy entrances
- character development and backstory moments
- epic (kinda) villain
- cool magic and moves (the Asta&Finral&Vanessa part was 👌)
- and it pretty much reaches a conclusion at the end of the volume which is nice

So yeah, this series has some really good moments. I hope it continues this way *fingers crossed*

I love this series and this is probably my favorite fight of the entire series so far. The whole volume is just a giant battle. The antagonist Vetto is terrifying and is built up perfectly. On pure enjoyment I would say this is a 5 star volume. It reminds me of being a teenager reading through my favorite Shonen Jumo manga at the time. The issue is it reaaaallyy reminds me of that feeling. It isn’t breaking the mold. There isn’t anything wrong with that, it’s super enjoyable and it will hype you up but to be truly great it does need to separate itself from the pack and what’s been done before.

Bueno qué decir de este tomo? Tuvo sabor a poco.

This is basically just a bunch of characters throwing themselves against the Beast Magic guy in order to show the reader new abilities. It's pretty fun, and the enemy is such a juggernaut it's somewhat impressive (in, like, a Nappa way), but it's still too early in the manga to tell whether each Black Bull will continue to have moments to shine in future arcs, or if it will soon drop into "no one but the protagonist is allowed to do anything significant," which happens to too many Jump battle manga.

Vanessa's boobs, thighs, and hips continue to drive me insane...!
