The year is 1969. Though there is war and unrest in the world, on August 15th, on a farm in upstate New York, a little concert will go down in history as the most famous music festival of our time: Woodstock. It also happens to be the day Bonnie McMillan and Peter Hampton meet and begin their free-spirited love-filled journey with each other. Fast forward forty-seven years. Bonnie unexpectedly passes after a night of hot sex and is whisked up to Purgatory, ‘The Green Room’ as they call it. Bonnie’s best friend meets her at the pearly green gates and the fun begins, from body sculpting to channeling. Follow Bonnie on her erotically incorrect quest to re-connect with the love of her life. Or at the very least, make sure the sex toys are hidden before the kids start sorting through her things!
Bonnie McMillan and Peter Hampton meet at Woodstock, 1969 and it’s lust and love at first sight. After a lifetime of being together Bonnie unexpectedly dies and leaves Peter alone for the first time in 47 yrs. But not for long. After Bonnie meets her best friend who died a few years before her and is whisked away to the Green Room, she’s determined to learn how to channel so she can connect once again with Peter. Undead shenanigans ensue.
Have you ever wondered what happens when someone dies? Do they go to Heaven? Hell? Purgatory? Nowhere? Well, in this story some people go to the Green Room which is kind of like a naughty kinky sexy Purgatory. I think the brevity of the story shortchanges the depth a bit, but it’s steamy and pretty damn funny and yet at the same time there’s parts that are heart breaking. If there is a Green Room in the great beyond then I think I’d enjoy going there. I’m looking forward to reading book 2!
Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine by JD Frettier is a 45-page short novel selected as a Book of the Day by OnlineBookClub for 08 February 2017. It was available as a free download on 08 February and is also available through Kindle Unlimited. The title did it for me; I had to download this one. A true bargain at the price, this is a tongue-in-cheek (pun intended) look at the after-effects of Woodstock. It is about the YEAR 1969, so get your head out of the gutter. It is getting crowded down here.
For me, it was the fourth sentence that caught me and forced me to read on. “My body elevates as cold paddles slap my chest.” It may not be the greatest line in literature, but the situational implications kept me going forward. Then there is the creative vocabulary. I still don't know what a “jasshonkey” is. Then there is a procedure called Nip Amp but we will get to that later. Bonnie might be in Purgatory, it is a bit early to tell. But it looks good, and so does Dee. What are the last thoughts while “passing” (or being born in a new world)? Where did I leave the sex toys and who will be the first to find them? Not very profound in a philosophical sort of way.
Bonnie has political views. Just to show the reader this is a serious commentary on life. Of her child, “Dharma is our oldest child. Conservative and born to be a bitch, as I like to say.” (loc 126-127). Dharma is the lone republican in the family.
For those readers into changing social values, Bonnie is in agreement. “While I wished deep down that we’d marry and become exclusive to each other, I did what Peter wanted. Sign of the times, I suppose.” (loc 283-285). From being close to a free libertine as far as sex, Bonnie wanted to marry Peter. It would be good for the two kids they already had. Socially correct issues, we can cross that one off the list.
Harley-Quin, the garden Get Some of Me, eye bleach, the earlier mentioned Nip Amp, and I am still wondering about “jasshonkey,” are some of the new words you can add to the dictionary of your spell checker program. It is nice to see that the writer can still have fun while putting together a serious story.
A fun, short read, I recommend this be read early in the morning to clear the decks for the routine stuff to follow.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. It's about an older woman who passes away after a night of debauchery with her husband. Instead of going to Heaven or Hell, she ends up in The Green Room (purgatory). It's not anything she expects and can't even enjoy it because she misses her husband so much. So she's on a mission to contact him from the other side.
This is a feel good read with plenty of humor about passing on and what to expect on the other side. I'm a lover of all things sixties and hippie, and being free enough to be yourself and not care what other people think, so this book instantly gripped me.
What a great short comical read. Bonnie McMillan and her husband had just got done having a night of great hot sex when she passes away... What happens in this book next, is a great take on what happens to you when it is your time. From meeting friends whom have passed away before you, to getting a make over on your body (boob job, hell yeah!!!), to watching your husband and family/friends at your own funeral. All in the comfort of 'the green room'. Will she ever get to be with the love of her life again? After meeting in 1969 at Woodstock, she misses her husband. Will her husband remember now that she is gone to hide all their sex toys so their kids dont find them? This is a fast paced quick read that I really enjoyed!!!
Frankly I damn near pissed myself laughing so hard at this story. Bonnie is feisty and blunt. Dee is seriously flower-child funny. Peter...Lord help us. That man... I only hope that when I pass I can have an experience such as this. But, on the flip side, there was a true love story here, too. The characters are so well written that you get lost in their antics and fall in love with them with each passing page. I would highly recommend this story if you need a great read that will 'uplift' your soul.
Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine is the first book in The Green Room Chronicles series by J.D Frettier. I didn’t know what to expect going into this book because I had never read any of Ms. Frettier’s stories before now, and when I researched her (ok, I admit it- I stalked her😊) to see what else she has done, this appears to be her debut novel? If that’s the case, what a brilliant introduction- as well as a superb and polished debut. Even though this is a novella sized story, there is nothing lacking in the content. There was quite a lot to the storyline, and I never felt like I was missing information or that the story was rushed or cut short in any way like some novellas can be. It is a very quick and easy read and when the end came I wanted more, not because it was lacking, but because I enjoyed the story. We meet Bonnie who had died after a kinky night with her beloved husband of 47 years. She is met at the “Pearly Gates” and introduced to ‘The Green Room”, by her best friend Dee- who had died 8 years earlier. The Green Room is the waiting room/checkpoint where souls are held till they are assigned to go to heaven, or hell. Bonnie has time to do some reflecting on her life- and we tag along as she remembers it all. Her soulmate Peter and how they met at Woodstock, their time at college, moving into a Hippie Commune, then the birth of their children, working, and her life up till having the fatal heart attack. She tries to come to terms with leaving her soulmate behind- and worries about things that she didn’t do- especially about whether her children will discover her stash of sex toys. As she is reminiscing, Dee shows her all the wonders The Green Room has to offer- and so her ‘adventure’ begins…. As you can probably imagine, there were quite a few laugh out loud moments to be had throughout the book. But there were also some more thought-provoking elements too. The storyline is very original, clever, and quirky. The characters are well developed and endearingly zany. I loved the ‘energy’ they gave the whole storyline. This is a character driven story, and the characters are definitely the real gems here. A light-hearted, fun, and slightly tongue-in-cheek look at the afterlife! I’m ready to jump into the next book ASAP!
Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine is a story I will never forget, and that's really saying something in a world full of forgettable books. I've been an avid reader of romance for decades but have never come across anything like this love story--one that literally crosses the span from life to death and beyond. After reading Bonnie and Peter's story I no longer fear death or the afterlife. Even though I know this is a work of fiction, I am going to believe in the Green Room as if it really does exist. If you're looking for a funny, sexy book that screams freshness and originality, this is a must read for you.
For the first time, we at this blog decided to listen to our first audio book and can I say it was the best decision we ever made. As a reviewer, I have read many books and felt many emotions through each book I have read. Listening to an audio book as added a new dimension to reviewing. I could do other things while listening intently to the story as it unfolded but to have a different voice for each character added a new dimension of enjoyment to the story, listening as the emotions are played out of each character and the humour of the book made it that much more enjoyable. The story starts with the death of Bonny and the help of her dearly departed friend Dee helping her through to the in-between heaven and hell. Bonny’s main concern about dying is that her husband needs to hide their sex toys from their adult children. The story travels through Bonny’s journey into her new life but also her not wanting to let go of her past, you learn how she met her husband and what their life/love was like. Being children of Woodstock and how as a couple they didn’t want to live the life of the norm. How they explored many different aspects of their sex life. Even as a spirit Bonny found a way to still be sexual with her husband and to channel so that she is still with him in spirit. The story is funny from the start. It has a different take on the word romance as Bonny in spirit form still loves and wants to be with her husband, how they make it work till it is his time to join her. The author has created an amazing story with comedy and laughter all the way through, the audio aspect just adds to the content created by the author. I strongly recommend this book, it’s fun, funny, with a twist on romance, if you want to add to the enjoyment get it in audio.
I loved this! It was unique and funny! It's a story about one woman's life and her afterlife! About going back to a time that meant the most to you! In Bonnie's case it meant going back,it meant remembering her life with Peter, her husband! Starting with how they met,in 1969 at Woodstock! Along the way she is reconnects with him in more ways than one!!
Dee,Bonnie's bestie, helps her navigate her way through Purgatory! First stop is at the Plastic Surgeon's!! Free Body Sculpting for all who enter!! The banter between Bonnie and Dee had me laughing out loud! Dee is One Fiesty Woman!! Mostly, though,I was taken in by the love and memories Bonnie and Peter shared. They were Soo Hot and Sigh Worthy!!
I thought the Author did a Great Job writing this story! She wrote a story filled with humor and romance! It was original and held my interest all the way to the end!
This novel was a quick and easy read. Bonnie, Dee, and Peter were fascinating characters and were easy to relate to. The setting was in what the author termed the Green Room, which is a place between for souls to go before moving on. The Green Room is full of exciting things and made the story interesting. People spend an unknown amount of time there and are never sure when or where they will go after. I highly recommend this book, but it is definitely for mature readers in that there are several sexual scenes and remarks. Once you start this book it is impossible to put down. It will have you laughing the entire time you read it even when you read it again!
Who knew that Woodstock could be recreated in the Afterlife? This place of free love, peace and joy with free boob jobs must have a waiting list. A very funny, witty story with plenty of humour, nostalgia and sex for the over sixties. For me, it only enriches the stories told about the era and if this were to be our final destination, then we have much to look forward to.
“Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine” is a good fun loving, sexy read that also provides the reader with a good laugh throughout. There are some great characters to meet inside and the racy, hot, graphic descriptions are vivid and stimulating, while at the same time sometimes hilarious. This is great, light-hearted fun reading.
I volunteered to review this book without any promises about the review (the rating or the posting).
When I was first sent in the direction of this book, I was told it was a “laugh out loud” comedy. The saying “each to his own” applies in this case. However don’t get the wrong idea. Just because I didn’t LOL over the book doesn’t even come close to saying I didn’t enjoy it. It was a fun and humorous read and I will definitely be looking for more in this series.
The following is my personal opinion and thoughts about many aspects of this book and its author.
COVER: ✯✯✯✯✯ - This is one of my favorite covers ever. I’m so tired of 1/2 naked couples. The bold and bright colors, the font...hell, everything about it worked with the book. The TV, the bright green, the # 69….there is a reason for all of them.
PLOT: ✯✯✯✯✯ - This book had a general direction the characters followed to get to the final result, but plot wouldn’t be the correct word to use. This was a humorous and feel good book that wasn’t supposed to have any overly dramatic situations or big climax at the end. Even though everything tied together in the end, it definitely leaves the story open to more books in the series.
WRITING STYLE: ✯✯✯✯✯ - I’ve read books by JD in her alternate persona, Jennifer Theriot. Her writing style doesn’t differ between the personas. I love her “to the point” descriptions. There’s just enough to give you a visual effect without being overly descriptive. Also, she has a way of giving you background history on the characters while staying in the moment. I mean...information that normally would be mundane and boring is interesting and informative in developing the characters.
CHARACTERS: ✯✯✯✯✯ - There are 3 main characters in this short story/novella. Each character is brought to life more by their words than their actions or any background information. Bonnie didn’t really conform to the “establishment” but she really has been allowed to spread her wings after her death….absolutely love her and can’t believe she ever birthed a kid like Dharma. Peter is Bonnie’s husband. As lovable and delightful as he is, I wouldn’t be able to be with someone like him. Cudos, Bonnie. Peter is a 70 year old hippy who refused to ever grow up until he was given the ultimatum by Bonnie. I love the character, but I’m so glad he doesn’t exist in my world. I’d kill him. Dee….omg, what a firecracker. She is the best friend of all best friends. She loud and proud. She pushes and pulls when the time requires it and she is definitely someone I want in my life.
OVERALL FLOW: ✯✯✯✯✯ - With the story being so light and cute without any real angst, the flow was very easy-going. I was shocked when I hit the end of the book. I was left unsatisfied because I never wanted it to end.
Bonnie dies after a night of kink with her husband of 47 years. Her best friend, Dee, who died 8 years earlier is there to welcome her to the “Green Room”. It’s like a holding room till the powers that be decide whether you go to heaven or hell. Bonnie reflects on her time with Peter...the time they met at Woodstock, the birth of the children, their marriage and life up to Bonnie’s death. During all this Dee shows Bonnie how to work with all the miracles the Green Room offers. Personally, I hope the Green Room really exists….I want the body sculpting, the Nip Amp and I definitely want to see the Get Some of Me.
Under no circumstances was I approached by the author to read or review this book. I offered without any agreement or promise for any compensation. I am voluntarily giving my opinion about this book. My only affiliation with the author is that I am a fan and want to support by reading and posting this review of my own free will.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It's a bit paranormal, a bit sexy and a whole lot of fun. I really liked the premise of the story. Bonnie dies after a night of hot sex with her husband and is pulled into The Green Room by her long deceased best friend, Dee. Not really hell, but certainly not heaven, Bonnie tries to come to terms with leaving her soul mate behind. She certainly has in interesting time in the hereafter waiting for her eternal HEA. The banter was fun the characters well developed for a short story. Hopefully, there will be more stories from the great beyond with the zest for life and the afterlife that Ms. Frettier portrays. I loved the title and of course my mind went straight to the gutter, alas for Bonnie and her husband 69 has more meanings than just a sexual position. While the story is fun, it does reinforce to me that love is eternal when you meet your soul mate.
Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine: A Spicy Romantic Comedy About the Afterlife (The Green Room Chronicles Book 1) By: J.D. Frettier 5 out of 5 stars
The story Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine: A Spicy Romantic Comedy About the Afterlife (The Green Room Chronicles Book 1) by J.D. Frettier is a book I enjoyed reading. When I read the details about the story I wasn’t sure about what to expect. What I got is a story that I couldn’t put down. It is a book that includes love and humor. Add in some witty remarks and some steamy situations and you have the right mix that will keep you turning pages. I loved the character of Bonnie McMillan. She has unexpectedly passed away and found herself in what they call “The Green Room.” She finds herself guided by her best friend who I also found to be a wonderful character to read about. Bonnie is now experiencing body sculpting and channeling. I could feel the love that Bonnie has for Peter and it is heartwarming. What else will Bonnie experience in “The Green Room? Will she re-connect with the love of her life? I enjoyed reading about the afterlife in this book. It had had me smiling and laughing out loud. It also includes some heartwarming parts as well. It is a well-written and unique story that I would recommend reading. It is the first book in a series and I look forward to reading the next one.
This is the first book I have read from this author and she blew me away. I did not know what to expect from this book but I was hooked on it right away. This book is the first from The Green Room Chronicles. I was very shocked that this is her debut book because this story was greatly written. The storyline has it all great characters, humor, and love. I devoured this incredible story in only one sitting.
Bonnie just died after a crazy night with her husband for forty-seven years. She is met by her best friend that passed away years ago. Bonnie is introduced to The Green Room which is a waiting area to see if you go to heaven or hell. She has a lot of time to reflect on her life on earth and she begins to miss her husband. Bonnie takes you to when she meets her soulmate Peter and how they lived their lives. She tries to come to terms with leaving Peter behind but she misses him so much. Will Bonnie and Peter be reunited in the afterlife?
Peter and Bonnie meet in 1969 at Woodstock, spent that weekend together. Six months later Peter transfered to the college Bonnie attend, he couldn't get her out of his mine. They lived in a Hippie community after college, had two children. They then moved to Washington and got jobs, got married and raised their children. Bonnie had a fatal heart attack. She goes to the holding area, for heaven and/or hell and is greater by one of her friends. Then the fun begins. You will enjoy this book from the first page till the last page. I couldn't put it down on e I started it. Quick read. Very well written.
This is a short novella that has a sense of humor about itself. The premise is that a woman dies and goes to a place that isn't heaven or hell. She runs into her best friend and has an adventure.
This story teaches us a few life lessons:
1. Have an estate plan complete with all your wishes. Don't let your daughter pick your outfit. 2. Make sure someone knows all of your log-ins and passwords (ok that's not in the story, but it's my tip to everyone). 3. Make sure your partner AND at least one trust friend knows where your "naughty things" are so family doesn't find them. 4. Remember we are sexual beings no matter how old we are.
This is a story that I would anonymously recommend to my elderly mother's book club. They would also get a kick out if it :)
Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine, the first book in the Green Room Chronicles, is written by J.D. Frettier. This novella is hilariously and well written story, justly so as it was an easy and quick read. The theme of the book was fun, light and perfect for the cast of characters. I think this story was creative, refreshing and something different out there in the genre that has become over-saturated.
This is my first book by this author and I loved it from the first word until the last. It is a fun short story that is engaging. I read it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down until I found out how it ended. It shows you how true love lasts even after death. I loved the characters and the emotional roller coaster ride they took me on. I laughed and felt compassion for them. I highly recommend this book.
Desperately seeking Sixty-Nine by J.D. Frettier a four-star read that will surprise you. This is the first novel in the Green Room chronicles, and I am hoping I can get to read number two soon. I honestly didn’t know what to think when I picked this one up, and I’m glad I did as it was so much fun, but I am still a little in wonder about what I read. I have often wondered about what happens after we pass and where we go, and this story gives me hope. I know its only fiction but its funny and will put a smile on your face if you are old enough to read as this does contain very adult story lines. What more can I say other than bring on number two.
Grab your Depends and prepare to laugh-out-loud! A fun, short story about a women who, in the afterlife, returns to her "flower child" days of the 60's. Bonnie is blunt, honest, and hilariously political. A fun afternoon read. I received this book from eBook Discovery. This is my honest review. Now I'm off to find book 2.
This is a quick, light and humorous read that will certainly make you laugh. If you're old enough to remember black and white TV you'll probably relate quite well to the story. I received this book from eBook Discovery. This is my honest review, which I voluntarily post here.
I loved this short story! J.D. gives us a comical look into a different story. This is a story about an older woman who finds herself in "the green room"unsure of her surroundings and missing her husband of many years. Follow Bonnie as she learns the ropes to the green room all the while trying to make her way back to the love of her life. I love the way the author took an unusual story line and made it laugh out loud funny. J.D. had my attention until the end. This is a light, funny, short story you don't want to miss out on!
J.D. Frettier has given her readers a trippy read that will have them laughing out loud and hoping that Bonnie and her husband get the heavenly ever after that they are searching for!!!
This short story was packed with so much good stuff!! I did not want it to end. The story was cute, the laughs kept coming, and I NEED more from this author!!!
This is a fantastically fun and entertaining story. J.D. Frettier knocks it out of the park with a funny yet poignant tale. I laughed and even teared up in this well told tale of love, loss, and the great beyond. Can't wait for more from this author!
Desperately Seeking Sixty-Nine (The Green Room Chronicles Book 1) — JD Frettier (10 chapters) May 24, 2017
This is an “erotically incorrect romance.” Or so it says on the cover page. I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I was about to find out. This is a fast read, an hour or so of dedicated time. It was a complete tale, which I liked. Definitely “dirty” ion some places. A very heterosexual story. There were some emotional feels in here too, so that was nice. Ending seemed a bit out of left field, since it wasn’t introduced to the reader until at the end, other than that…a pretty nice read, if you can get through the sexy bits. The “ertocially incorrect party though? Eh, I didn’t think it was “incorrect” in anyway, so I’m not sure what made it that way to the writer. I’ve read far “worse” “erotically incorrect” stories, so it didn’t phase me at all.
Not what I was expecting (didn’t see the “erotically incorrect romance” part until after I downloaded the book,) but as far a hippies of the Woodstock era: yeah, I could see a couple from that time ending up like this. Not too radical there for me. However, not really my cup of tea.
