Lexi closed her eyes. The waves rolled in slowly, rhythmically, with a dependability that would never be doubted. Shawn had been her rock and they’d worked together with a rhythm that had kept their jobs and life in sync. Before Derek, she might’ve entertained a future with Shawn … but the dark-haired man with a camera bag slung over his shoulder had changed everything.
When Lexi Burke escaped the remnants of a cold winter in Chicago for the beaches of Kauai, it wasn’t a random vacation. She left the hectic pace of Burke Enterprises behind with enough money to retire at age thirty-two, intent on settling into the idyllic existence of island life. Until she met local photographer Derek Mitchell—a talented man with a grudge against rich tourists.
From art night to snorkeling lessons, hiking, and chopping coconuts, Lexi can’t talk herself out of spending time with the handsome, hardworking man who knows the value of every dollar. She also can’t find a way to tell him the truth about herself. But then Derek is selected to help in a benefit at a masquerade ball as one of the eligible bachelors up for auction. Lexi must decide whether to wear a mask or unveil her true self and risk losing Derek’s trust and a chance at love.

Hawaiian Masquerade was one of those romances that have all the fun and the secrets that make things tense for the couple. Derek is a photographer that is trying to make a career of his talent. He also works with his friend and room mate selling coconuts. Lexi has recently moved to Hawaii and is trying to find herself after her high powered career that has burned her out and caused her to retire. Leaving Chicago for the islands means that she can find the things that make her happy. Things like painting.
When the two meet, they find that they have a lot in common, except for Derek's dislike of people with money. He loved to verbalize this loathing. Lexi was hesitant to mention that she had money, plenty of money.
Fun story with beautiful scenery and warm loving characters.
Beautiful Kauai...anyone want to go exploring with me? Take some paints, good books, sun hat and shades, hiking shoes and just enjoy? I'm ready to go after reading about it in this book. So if you can't make it to Kauai with me then no worries, just grab this book and you'll find yourself sitting in the sun, snorkeling, enjoying beautiful scenery on your hikes and a sweet love story too.
I devoured this book when I first opened the pages. It was the perfect unwind after a long and busy day. After the family made it to bed, I snuggled up with it and my cozy blanket and enjoyed the joy of these two characters. Lexi was super sweet. She and her brother worked together to create a large and thriving business but she found herself at the point of needing to step away from it all. To find joy in her life again and not be glued to her phone and computer and the office. So she says goodbye, buys a beautiful home in Kauai and disappears there with radio silence to her family and friends for a couple weeks until she's finally feeling settled and won't be persuaded by them to return to her old habits and way of life.
One of her first new friends is Derek, an amazing photographer, who helps her start to learn the pace of the island life and shows her the sights. Derek is a little jaded towards the wealthy, especially after his childhood where they had to scrimp and save, then to watch people come to the island and be demanding (usually the wealthy) has not helped his frustration towards them. His anger towards them rises pretty easily. Little does he know that his new found friendship with Lexi isn't 100% fully disclosed with who she is. Lexi wants to tell him, but she also wants her anonymity for a time while she is adjusting to stepping away from work. Yet the longer they are friends and he doesn't know about her money, it gets harder and harder to tell him for fear that she will lose his friendship.
The adventures these two go on, the budding friendship, the hurts from their pasts and the shining hope of their future made for some great, happy reading time for me. Derek, despite his anger and frustration towards the wealthy, was a great character. He was just so good, and Lexi was a beautiful and sweet counterpart for him.
Not only do you get some great imagery to visualize, but you also get to read about Derek's photography work and Lexi's art work. Loved it. Another great aspect of the book that added dimension to the story and characters.
There's a second book, which I read right away after this one, that I highly recommend reading too. Jordan is Lexi's brother and we get his story in The Billionaire's Stray Heart. Jordan isn't front and center in this book, but there is plenty of information about him and Lexi's friendship and her love of her brother that I felt a connection to him and was so happy to have a book to read about him too.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Second time reading this book and I still enjoyed it! I also still really want to go to Hawaii! I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. Kind of hoping we get a little of Lexi and Derek.. I still want more of them! ;)
July 2016:
Lexi is an overworked, stressed out business executive and life is passing her by. After doing some soul searching she realizes that what she needs is a fresh start. Making the biggest and scariest decision of her life, she chooses to leave her job and her home in Chicago to begin a new journey on the beautiful island of Kauai. With a clean slate, she can do anything she wants, be who she wants to be, discover who she really is outside of her business world.
Derek has struggled all his life financially. He is unable to make ends meet on the income from his photography business alone. In order to pay all the bills and keep his business going, he must help is friend, Pika, by chopping coconuts on the side. As a photographer on the island of Kauai, he has seen lots and lots of tourists. The ones he does his best to stay away from are the wealthy ones. All the encounters with them growing up has left him with very strong feelings of resentment towards them. He thinks they are all the same and has no qualms about expressing his opinion of them.
When Lexi and Derek meet for the first time, there is an instant connection. Neither one of them were looking for any kind of relationship but fate had something else in store for them. But before they can move forward, Lexi must come clean about her wealth and Derek must overcome his issues with money and realize that not all billionaires are the same.
Watching Lexi and Derek become friends, going on adventures together, seeing who they were and what made them tick had me falling in love right along with them. They were both amazing characters with huge hearts! They both know that this life is not about money and how much you have. It's about the journey, the little things, family, friends, living life to the fullest and just being grateful for all the blessings and beauty in our lives. *le sigh*
Can I just say how much I fell in love with Hawaii just from this book?! The descriptions were amazing and I felt like I was right there with Lexi and Derek. Hawaii has definitely been added to my bucket list!
While I really enjoyed this book I would have loved just a little bit more! Like seeing more of Lexi and Derek's relationship after he discovered she was a billionaire. We all know how much I love my epilogues! ;) Hehe. The ending just seemed a bit rushed to me. And Eliza... what really happened with her?! She's plotting evilness, it's discovered and BAM! No one knows why nor does anything happen to her? Did I miss something while I was reading? Hmmmm....
So... I just have to say... this is my first book by Rachelle J. Christensen and I am proud to announce that it will not be my last! I am seriously loving this series and all the new authors I am adding to my list! So much fun! :)
And this casting! It was definitely tough! Trying to find the perfect match had me wanting to pull my hair out! Haha. But I'm pretty happy with these two... ;) What do you think?!
Last summer, I was lucky enough to have spent some time on the island of Kauai and I completely fell in love with it. Reading this book brought back some of my favorite memories and brought to life many aspect of the island that I didn't get to experience.
Lexi is beaten down by business life and retires from her brother's company to Kauai. In a pleasing twist from the typical Billionaire books, it's Lexi who's the rich one, but fortunately, she doesn't let the wealth go to her head and is very adorable and likable. One of my favorite things about her is her quest to spread the wealth to others in the world, but I have to really appreciate Derek and his hard-working ways. He has reason to resent the richy tourists who frequent his beloved island, especially since he works so hard to scrape by. Other than the chip on his shoulder, he's a very likable character, too. The way he treats people really says a lot about him.
I felt like I was participating in all these fun events and activities with this couple. I adored their friends and loved their times together. The way the setting is portrayed and a real local, behind-the-scenes feeling is developed really captured my heart and my attention. I especially liked how these characters worked through their trials, hard feelings, and weaknesses in a realistic and satisfying way. This is one of my favorites and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good, clean romance in a tropical setting.
Content: mild romance (kissing). Clean!
*I received a copy through the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
I have been loving these Destination Billionaire Romance books. They are a quick romantic escape and in this case, it's a quick romantic escape to Kauai! It made me almost desperate to be basking in the beautiful beaches and lush landscapes there. Hawaii makes for the perfect romantic set up- especially for an artist and a photographer!
Lexi and Derek are a fun pair. I loved that the billionaire in this case was Lexi. Even with all that money, she was down to earth and so conscientious of those around her. Her desire to become a part of Kauai and the people there made her so endearing as a character.
Derek, who's life experiences have left him a bit jaded about people with money, is the perfect person to sit opposite of Lexi, the billionaire. I really liked Derek and how he wanted to share his best with Lexi.
I kind of wish that there would have been some kind of suspense to draw this book out a bit more. Rachelle is sort of a name for me in the romantic suspense genre and I love her books. I really liked this one too, I just saw the potential of it becoming a bit more suspenseful but it didn't.
As I said, this was a fun, diverting escape. I enjoyed my time with Lexi, Derek and the supporting cast in Kauai!

Hawaiian Masquerade is a summer must-read. I loved the setting, the characters, and the romance. Rachelle Christensen has been a long-time favorite author and her newest release is everything I'd hoped - fun, fast-paced, and romantic. Highly recommended.
Multi-millionaire meets nature photographer on Kauai. She is burnt out from work and has more than enough money to leave her job and find a slower, peaceful life. He is a photographer trying to create a brand that will allow him to earn a living from photography. At its foundation, this is a standard boy meets girl story but the details are what made this a good read. Underwater photography, the beautiful descriptions of Kauai and a peek into what a slower, peaceful life looks like on the island. I've been to these islands but this book makes me want to return and see it through the eyes of these characters.
I liked that, in this story, it's the woman who is rich and the guy is the one struggling financially. It was a nice change. I also liked that Derek wasn't head-over-heels in love with Lexi from first sight, although there was definitely an attraction there. Again, a nice change from the clichéd storyline we so often read about in the types of stories. I enjoyed this story. I thought it was well-written and enjoyable. The way it was written definitely leaves opportunity for a sequel with some of the characters but it is a stand-alone book with no cliffhangers. I recommend this book.
I LOVED this book! You know when you read and then finish a book that was so good you sigh because you loved it so much and your sad it's over? Well, that was me with this book! Rachelle did such a great job with this story. I promise you'll fall in love with the characters and the setting. Hawaii has never been at the top of my bucket list but after this book I think someday I'll have to give it a try. This is an awesome book about relationships, trust and happiness. Can't wait to read more from Rachelle!
I wrote this novel as part of the Destination Billionaire Romance series and I'm thrilled with the story. It was so much fun to revisit Kauai through my character's eyes! I especially loved writing this one because my kids and hubby helped me brainstorm several of the plot points. Hint, you might recognize one of my kid's names in this book! I hope you enjoy it as well!
Cute, clean, fast read. I struggled with the whole millionaire/billionaire aspect of the story, but the actual romance and development of Derek and Lexi's relationship was entertaining. I enjoyed the descriptions of the setting, all the places in Hawaii, and the story line itself, just not the money part of it, too far-fetched and just not relatable for me. Still, I can see where the author has left tie-ins for other characters in the series and I will probably read the rest of the books in the series at some point. It's longer than a lot of novellas, but it's shorter than a standard book, in my opinion.
****Burke Billionaire Romance books 1-3 1.Hawaiian Masquerade (Burke Billionaire Romance Book 1):{The review says it all.} 5 stars I purchased a copy of the novel Hawaiian Masquerade (Burke Billionaire Romance Book 1) by Rachelle J. Christensen and this review was given freely. Easy flowing with picturesque descriptions, social discrimination, some conflict and drama, and clean romances. Moving away from the multi million dollar Chicago based export business she shares with her brother, Lexi Burke moves to Kauai for a more relaxing life but a dramatic first meeting with struggling photographer Derek Mitchell in an art store brings her more than she bargained for.
2.The Billionaire's Stray Heart (Burke Billionaire Romance Book 2): {A little stiff and too repetitive. I skimmed the last half.} 4 stars I purchased a copy of the novel The Billionaire's Stray Heart (Burke Billionaire Romance Book 2) by Rachelle J. Christensen and this review was given freely. A highly descriptive and emotion packed sequel with a surprise ending but I found it a little repetitive. Lexi's brother and billionaire exporter Jordan falls in love with dog trainer Maddie and a stray puppy resulting in shorter work hours, a closer relationship with his sister,a rocky romance and a more balanced life.
3.The Refugee's Billionaire (Burke Billionaire Romance Book 3) 5 stars I purchased a copy of the novella The Refugee's Billionaire (Burke Billionaire Romance Book 3)by Rachelle J. Christensen and this review was given freely. This book ties the first two together in that it includes Lexi and Jordan's prior assistant Shawn, Burke's Higher Steps charity and the Atlanta Refugee center which is one of Lexi's favorite charities. Single Mom and former Cuban refugee Carolina meets Shawn when he visits to determine the Center's needs. A rocky courtship caused by worry about losing the Center and Shawn's ability to stay in Atlanta ultimately ends happily.
This was a fun romance that let me escape to the tropical island paradise of Kauai. Lexi Burke has just retired with 700 million to Kauai. She’s sick and tired of being defined by her money, and is desperate to find herself by stepping away from the corporate world her brother got her into out of college. When she runs into Derek Mitchell at a store when she finds a lost little girl, she feels insta-attraction. She loves that he thinks she’s just a normal girl, which she is. As they spend time together, a problem arises. One that might keep them apart forever. She can tell he hates rich people by some of the comments he makes. Does she dare tell him who she really is, or can she keep hiding behind her masquerade she’s created on this beautiful island?
This had great characters I got to like and know. The setting was well written, as I’ve been there and could picture her scenes quite vividly--hear the waves and roosters, feel the red sand beneath my feet, and smell the tropical scents on the hikes, and see the magic of a dozen waterfalls. The love connection is quite fast – two weeks – but I could forgive that detail because it was a super fun book and edited well. I liked the romantic tension between the characters, and the stakes involved. The side characters were good too. I’m excited to read the next book about Lexi’s brother, Jordan.
Lexi is a confident, intelligent, and strong-willed individual that has decided she needs to leave the corporate world after a successful career. Choosing her happy place, Kauai, she lets go of her old world to start anew. I was drawn to Lexi, wondering what her next adventure would be and of course, she runs into Derek at an art festival.
Derek is a local trying to develop his passion, photography, into a business. I wasn't sure if he was the right one for Lexi, he disdains wealth, and he seemed too laid back for the ambitious ex-corporate queen. After Lexi's enthusiastic desire to help a budding businessman gets a little over the top, it all comes to head at a very interesting masquerade ball.
I enjoyed being pulled into the island's beauty, ways, speech, and nature. There was enough description that I could envision the beautiful surroundings without it detracting from the story. There is quick, easy chemistry between the two main characters, and some very charming and sweet side characters, that fired my curiosity to quickly finish the read to see where it would end up.
I would suggest this book for an entertaining, lazy afternoon read.
Honestly, while sweet, this was far from a satisfying romance.
If I could describe the book in one word, it would be: shallow.
There was really very little actual conflict, and what WAS there felt forced or half-hearted. The romance came too quickly and too easily, the characters had very little depth to them so that it felt wrong that they would really be "in love" when they clearly knew very little about each other. It was all surface interest, mainly driven by physical attraction. There were no real obstacles, and the one thing that seemed to be an issue between them -- Lexi's money -- seems, in and of itself, a truly shallow reason not to like a person.
Everything about this was just floating on the surface, there was no depth and no tension. Everything was just too easy and happy all the time. Does not make for an interesting read.
Lexi Burke has escaped the cold weather and her jobat Burke Enterprises which she ran with her brother. She is now on Kaiui. She has retired and plans to live on her millions and paint pictures. Then she eets Derek Mitchell a local artist who has a big chip on his shoulder concerning rich people. Lexi is afraid to tell him of her wealth.
One day they go to take underwater pictures and Derek loses his $5000. camera. Well Lexi can fix things so she calls Burke Enterprises and gets them to offer him a fake job which includes a new camera. When he finds out that Lexi is behind it he becomes very angry. Has Lexi lost the love of her life by using her money? Buy this book and find out if Lexi can win Derek over of it they part ways for good. A fun, fast reading book that is very enjoyable.
Rich girl with a burnout decided to leave it all behind and settles on Kauai, where she meets a poor photographer who hates rich people. So of course they fall for each other, and it gets more and more difficult for Lexi to let Derek know about her wealth. Will he forgive her when he finds out? Not a bad story, with very likeable characters and a good narration style, all set in a Paradise-like environment. It was nice to read and relax with, but it was not, at least not for me, a page-turner - things just progressed towards the (predictable) end. The one twist or turn in the story was just a short sort of glitch in the love story, but not for long; maybe making this more dramatic would have put more suspense to the story, but that is just what I like in a story. As I said, I still liked this book, and will certainly get the next one in this series.
Great title for a delightful read - travelogue, intrigue and romance. Rachelle J. Christensen is a new author for this avid reader. While I am not fond of Billionaire stories, I enjoyed the unpretentious yet wealthy Lexi Burke. The author describes the Hawaiian sites both on land and in the sea. Love the under water descriptions of coral reefs and the various fish. Photography is my hobby, so the description of Derek Mitchell's photos was breath taking. Having lived in Chicago but now in rural SW Michigan, I understand why Lexi Burke wanted leave the Windy City. A well crafted story with believable characters, twist and turn plot, and an OK resolution. A story I could get into with a shortened attention span due to sheltering in place during a pandemic.
Lexi is wealthy and kind, a combination Derek simply can't fathom. Her decision not to tell him about her net worth goes from bad to worse as they grow closer and closer. Derek keeps tripping over his own pride and opinion of wealthy snobs, scaring Lexi in the process. More than one delightful scene is spent in the lush surroundings of Hawaii.: swimming, hiking, etc. After a peculiar turn of events, the situation is brought to a head. Lexi and Derek have to either accept who they are and who they're falling in love with--or not. I'm pleased to report that I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Clean, clever, and with a plot that wasn't paper-thin.
Drawing and painting use to be a passion for Lexi, now living in Hawaii, she has bought the materials, hoping to recreated that passion. For Derek the love of photography, and wishing for a camera when he first saw Lexi. They meet at the art market, where she buys a painting of his, and wanted another, but hesitated. The offer to teach her snorkeling was the beginning, He also was very vocal about people with money, which she had. Fun book to read, giving readers a taste of Hawaii, and the beauty of it.
Lexi and Jordan had lost their parents at a young age when a cement-mixer crashed head-on with their parent's car. Both parents were heavily insured. The children inherited a fortune. Jordan ploughed it into an importing company. Lexi helped him for years, becoming extremely wealthy. Burn-out left her feeling drained. She resigned, moving to Hawai where she soon feĺt rejuvenated. Derek became very important to her. But her wealth was a major stumbling block. A lovely story with Christian standards.
This is a lovely, clean romance with good characters. Lexi leaves her stressful high-powered job in Chicago with more money than she knows what to do with to try and enjoy her life with meaning.
She meets Derek, a struggling photographer, who is against all rich people and the arrogant way in which they act.
Their attraction is instant but Lexi keeps her wealth a secret and doesn’t tell Derek she is one of those ‘rich’ people he so despises.
Hawaiian Masquerade is a sweet, heartwarming romance despite the difference in net worth for Lexi and Derek - mostly because he does not know she is wealthy. Derek hates wealthy people. Hawaii is so beautifully described, it is almost a character in this book. Since Lexi hid her wealth, I had to keep reading to see when the train wreck would happen and how they would get passed it! (Actually the book is so good that I have read it twice!) Ms. Christensen skillfully gives this interesting couple a believable HEA!
This is a very sweet romance that gave me the warm fuzzies. The main characters, Lexi and Derek, were well-rounded and the descriptions of Kawai's landscape made me want to hop a plane and find this paradise in the Pacific! Hawaiian Masquerade is a clean romance, which I found refreshing. It also is not an insta-love romance. The relationship between Derek and Lexi is a slow build over several weeks which I also liked. Good writing, sweet and and clean romance and the satisfying HEA ending checked all my boxes. 4 stars.
This is a fun, clean romance that takes place in Hawaii with a twist on the classic Billionaire story. In this story, Lexi is a billionaire who has tired of corporate life and decides to leave Chicago and move to Hawaii. She meets a cute guy who is also a brilliant photographer. As Lexi gets to know him better, she is afraid to reveal her wealth. It all comes to a head at a charity masquerade ball and auction. 3 1/2 stars
This book was a light romantic read. Good and clean. No sex or swear words. I think this is the first time that I have read anything by this author. I would definitely read more of her books. Recommend for all ages. The reason I rated it four stars is because I didn't like the person that the heroine called for advice when she couldn't get any one else. It was sort of disrespectful due to the situation.
Lexi doesn't want anyone to know she is wealthy when she gets to Hawaii. She is tired of the rat race and pressure from others. She meets a guy and falls in love, but she never finds the right time to tell him about her wealth. When someone else announces who she is and her being a billionaire, he is shocked and angry with her. Will Lexi be able to make him understand why she lied?
This was an excellent story about two people who almost let their past hurts drive them apart but then came together with love. The twists and turns were satisfyingly resolved and the feeling of the island came through. I can't wait for the next story and the continuation of the characters.
Why four stars? I loved the setting! Rachelle placed the reader into such a vividly written setting that you felt transported. I liked that it was the woman who was the billionaire, nice twist. The romance felt real and not forced and the characters were flawed and improved as the story developed.
