When Aiden comes home to help the man he grew up with sort through his mother's estate after she passes, he expects it to be a brief visit. One of support, and encouragement and perhaps even one of the last visits they'll have now that there are no more family ties to keep them together. After all, they live in different states. Lucas has a fiancee to get back to, and Aiden has a boyfriend to return to. But Lucas has some things to get off his chest, and these two young men are about to weather changes that will leave them breathless, hurt, and mended all in the course of a turbulent week.
In the end, can they really cheat at the game of life and love, and get away with it?
This 40,000 word novel has graphic depictions of things too taboo to discuss here. See the excerpt inside to check out this touching erotic love story brought to you by Simon Strange, in the tradition of oddly moving stories of forbidden attraction like the Nick's Awakening series.
Simon Strange loves coffee, red wine, craft beer, and men. Especially men. Especially the men you should never, ever screw...
What is it about the forbidden that gets our blood hot? Is it just the rebellious instinct to do what we're told is wrong? Those men we grew up with, the ones that were either always looking over us or always by our side—or chasing us around—the ones that say they don't want us, and would never ever... well, just this once, if you don't tell...
So that's what you get from Simon Strange. Stories of the forbidden, of the filthy, and the naughty, and the never-ever-tell, and of course, the strange. With nearly 150 reviews for his collection of erotica and romance, and an average of four and a half stars across the board, you'll almost certainly find something you like in the pages of his work.
4.5 stars - Truly this might be the best of the bunch.
All of the novels I've read by Simon Strange are original, very well written, and (of course) hot as hell. The story behind Cheaters is so perfectly crafted, so intimate, and says so much - it just blew me away. The characters are great too, but what gets me is the way the author lays down the whole thing... It was an absolute pleasure to experience Cheaters, definitely one for the re-read shelf.
This was a great book. I guess two step brothers falling in love is a taboo subject, but it just didn’t bother me. Aiden and Lucas were just two guys who were finally able to express what they had kept hidden all their lives.
Read this twice - great story, loved the taboo nature of it. This book does make me more interested in more of the author’s other works, so I’m excited to read them!
With how Lucas behaves at the beginning, I thought this was going to be a one-night-stand only. It doesn't start with very good impressions... both Lucas and Aiden have their respective partners: Lucas is engaged, albeit a bit unwillingly, to his gf of several years. Aiden is in a long time relationship with a guy that is only his 2nd bf. Lucas is a bit of an ass at the beginning, with this sex/gay jokes and innuendos. And basically asking Aiden, his step-brother (thank G they are not blood-related) to give him a bj... basically wanting to cheat on his gf. But Aiden is very much against cheating, and refuses.
Their past is... ahh, very, mmmm, ohmmm, what to say. Aiden gave his 1st bj to Lucas while Lucas was "sleeping", and Aiden was like, what, 14? or less, since Lucas taught him how to masturbate when Aiden was 12 and Lucas 15. Their activities in the woods were basically that, uhm.
Till Aiden gets a phone call from his bf who confesses he was cheating on him and breaking up with him. Then Lucas' gf comes for a visit and a quick f**k and that was the last straw for Aiden. Lucas begs him to come back, tells him he ended the thins with her gf (I don't get it, they did it but she blamed him bc he couldn't get it up?) and finally Lucas confesses he was gay all along and loves Aiden. Smoking scenes that also were tender (Lucas wanted to take his time) but also, WTF was that golden shower out of nowhere :/
I liked that Aiden wanted time apart to see things more calmly. They really loved each other so it made sense and as a reader, it was obvious they would wait for the other. This is a romance where I can see they will grow old together.
Not as big of a fan of this one as the other Simon Strange book I read. The sex was well written, but that was the best part. All the right pieces were there for characterization and plot and romance, but none of it really fit. It was bland and boring.
This was different than I expected but it was great. The ending seemed more HFN than HEA. The characters were very well developed. Lucas and Aiden were great and their chemistry was good. The taboo/kink was well done!
MCs didn’t really cheat though (well the one kind of did but stopped himself). the taboo part wasn’t that big a deal but also felt like it was too far simultaneously, idk
This had more feelings and relationship development than the other Simon Strange books I've read, and as a result I ended up liking this one significantly more than any other.
There is, however, the same sense that this really should've had another edit/revision before publishing. In all of his books, I find a lot of typos and errors, and it was no different here - mixing up of "you're" and "your", "where" and "were", misplaced capital letters such as writing "He said." after dialogue, missing commas, etc. I'm also, frankly, starting to get a little weirded out by his obsession with the term "piss slit". That just makes me think about things I don't want to be thinking about during a 'hot' sex scene.
However, the story and relationship were good enough that I'm willing to give this a relatively high (for this author) rating regardless. It's a 3.5 rounded down for the above reason.
Favourite character: Both were about equal Happy ending?: Yes Trigger warnings: Non-con (in the past one of the MCs gives the other a blowjob thinking he's asleep, though the other character later reveals he'd been awake and enjoyed it); infidelity; homophobia (including derogatory use of the f-slur); random non-sexual watersports for some reason which threw me off enough that I had to take a break before continuing on to the sex scene right afterwards
