Staying at a local lodge, she finds herself confiding in handsome Luke Danner—an ex-marine who’s as used to barking orders as Irene is to ignoring them. This is a well-written, entertaining, steamy, romantic suspense novel. It has a likable, intelligent, strong and capable female protagonist, an engaging male protagonist, wit, a touch of humor, murder, intrigue, mystery, twists and turns, and a happily ever after ending. I listened to the audio book, and the narrator, Ms. Amanda Cobb, has a lovely voice and does an excellent job depicting the characters and their personalities.

I usually does not like suspense blended with romance. Most of the time, the suspense becomed silly and focusing too much on the romance. All Night Long is different. Miss Krentz knows very well to bring good combination of romance and the murder suspense.

The romance is there but build it so slow that I am on my edge anticipating the suspence. There is also a bit of humor involving Luke's family. I am glad that I found this book. Looking forward for Miss Krentz next book.

3.5 stars.

First time reading this author. Quite enjoyed it. Liked the hero and heroine. Liked the setting and the mystery element.

Alpha male through and through. She knew the type well.

"Told myself I wasn't going to do this tonight," he said.
"Clearly, I lied."
"This is probably not a good idea," she whispered.
"Got a better one?"
Therein lay the real problem, she thought. She didn't have a better idea. Kissing Luke was far and away the best idea she'd had in years, maybe forever.
She wound her arms slowly around his neck and smiled. "Nope."

Will definitely check out more books by this author.

Read for the URR 2017 New Year's Reading Challenge prompt 'Romantic Suspense'

Beware some vague spoilers pertaining to the killer

17/8 - This was not the romantic suspense novel I was looking for. Luke, the 'hero' was depicted as a stalker and to begin with, from his thoughts and actions, I thought we were in the bad guy's head not the lead who we were supposed to find attractive. I don't know what readers Krentz thought would find a creepy motel owner following a woman around late at night, even after she made an effort to leave the motel without him knowing about it. It certainly didn't work for me, I was just annoyed that Irene didn't tell Luke to get lost.

The mystery was pretty good, but by the time we got to it I was already irritated by Luke and the mystery wasn't good enough to forget about the bad 'the hero's a stalker' taste in my mouth. By the time the irritation had faded the mystery suddenly became a problem when a tape made by the original murder victim (Pamela, childhood friend of Irene) reveal more of the red herring's motives. The problem occurred when Pamela reveals the red herring's identity on the tape, but she strangely neglects to tell Irene who she shared all her conclusions with just before she was murdered. Obviously Krentz couldn't tell us who it was because then we couldn't have the climatic 'It ain't the red herring, it's this other seemingly innocuous character that we never would have guessed might be a bad guy' ending, but the way it happened was just stupid. Why wouldn't Pamela tell us who she talked to? Why would she just say (quote straight from the book on page 325)

'"...I told someone I thought I could trust about the video and what I had done with it. Later, after I heard what happened to your folks, I realised that person must have called Daddy in San Fransico."'

It makes absolutely no sense that she wouldn't tell Irene the full truth. The story would have worked much better if Krentz had written that the tape had become damaged right at the important bit, rather than that Pamela just didn't reveal the name for mysterious reasons that no one would ever believe.

It seems I've previously read two more of Krentz's books and given both of them two stars, too. That rating seems to be becoming a pattern and does not bode well for the two other Krentz books that I own. I will still read them, but not till the two star vibe has faded at least a little.

Irene and Luke. A very full book with many layers. Not what I am used to from this author. Over 400 pages long, it deals with some serious topics like PTSD and how families deal with mental illness. It's done in a humorous way but still taken seriously and not suddenly 'cured from' like in some books.
I don't want to give anything away because the mystery is good, but for those who are squeamish there is no real gore, but there is rape . It happened in the past and very little detail is given but it still makes your skin crawl, yet it's integral to the mystery. OK, 'nuff said.
Irene has never really recovered from the death of her parents, yet she's not crazy or depressed or suffering from 'overblown' PTSD, like so many of her acquaintances choose to believe. Luke suffers from PTSD as well, but is dealing with it in his own way. If only his family would listen to him!!! They believe he is hiding away in Dunsley where he runs a bunch of cabin rentals. Life is pretty quiet there until Irene comes back to town. Dunsley is a small town with an over active rumour mill and Irene is great fodder for the local gossips. She's also just what Luke is looking for. He's a curmudgeonly ex-marine and she's an ambitious reporter.
She comes back to town at the request of an her old friend, Pamela, from high school, only to discover her dead body. Was it suicide, or was it foul play? Pamela was the daughter of the most important man in town. The man who is looking to become the next President of the US.
Although you can easily guess some of the mystery, I wasn't able to guess all of it. I loved the MCs and could really feel their connection. I wanted to slap Luke's family upside the head, but it was pretty cheeky how he dealt with them and how Irene supported him without really doing anything. Really, I never knew which way the story was going to go next. A fun read, that turned out much better than I thought it would at first! I wish there was a sequel where Irene and Luke could solve another crime together.
I listened to this one from the library and the readers, Kathy Garvey and David Colacci, did a wonderful job!

JAK’s All Night Long was a romantic suspense on par with a story written by Sandra Brown or Linda Howard. When Luke Danner and Irene Stenson first met. each carried a guilt concerning their immediate family. For Irene, it was her haunting past and the question, ‘What if....?’ For Luke, it was about his immediate family and the members with all their concerns. The question was, ‘Should they be?’ Concerned, that is.

Luke was an ex-Marine and an alpha male. If I met him for the first time as Irene did, I would even add a little bit stalker-ish to his profile. And maybe a tad self-asserting but in a contemporary fashion. I appreciated that Irene had a handle on him. She didn’t let him ruffle her feathers with his bluntness.

And it would not have been a RS without a murder. Or murders, I should say. There was a dark theme that the reader will discover along with a few solid secondary characters. And some good chemistry between Irene and Luke. Like many RS stories, it took place over a period of days but it wasn’t an annoying issue like I find it sometimes.

I had my suspicions: my personal hunches of who did what and why but I have to admit JAK threw in a few game changers in the last third of the story. All in all, All Night Long was a quick read.

This novel provides a fulfilling feeling both throughout and at the end. It was an excellent and fun read.

It is the development of a romantic relationship set within a murder mystery with some added suspense and a generous use of humor. I loved Luke's character. Many of his lines were gems. He was a gruff retired marine who bought a third-rate motel, which I will call the "Lodge." He intimidates and yells at paying customers as if they were marine recruits, as he informs them of motel rules and enforces the rules. He also puts out the "no vacancy" sign when he does not want to be disturbed. Irene, his love interest heroine, also has some good lines. This book was full of wonderfully creative dialogue. The characters and conversations caused me to laugh out loud many times. It is dry wit. I will quote a couple of examples here, but I fear they may not be as funny to the reader of this review, since the reader does not have the full flavor of the characters and the context for the lines. But, I'm hoping to provide a glimpse of the type of humor. On page 46, Luke's assistant Maxine complained that Luke did not put out donuts in the morning since the Lodge had a guest. Maxine said "All of the better-class hotels and inns do it." Luke said "I like to think that the Lodge is in a class by itself." On page 87, he has one guest Irene staying at the Lodge. As Irene is driving away, he runs to the drive and stops in front of her car, forcing her to stop. He says "Where are you headed?" She says "You know, I've stayed in a wide variety of lodging establishments in my life, but this is the first time I've had to account for my comings and goings to the proprietor." He said "We do things a little differently here at the Lodge." His motive for this, of couse, is that he's interested in her, attracted to her and concerned for her safety. I love this kind of writing. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: two. Setting: current day small town of Dunsley, in northern California. Genre: romantic mystery suspense.

I love Jayne Ann Krentz. She is an auto-read for me (I work in a public library so don't always have to purchase books to read them, lucky me!). Once her books come out in mmp I always try to purchase them (I don't collect hb's).
I loved the whole premise of this book... Loved both Irene and Luke, the chemistry between them was very nice indeedy. I thought the whole idea of them being able to understand each other 'cos they both suffer from PTSD was great. It wasn't a focus of the book but it was developed in such a way as to help flesh out the characters. I love the fact that JAK lets her readers find out about her characters and plots without explaining every little nuance.
The fear Irene feels throughout the story is realistic and well done. I liked the fact that she didn't become dependant on Luke to 'rescue' her and yet she wasn't all she-man either.
Great characters, great plot, a refreshing re-read for me.

4.5 stars. A winner! Great dialogue. Lots of dry wit, lots of chuckles. I smiled a lot. I hope her newest release is as good, and so far, reviews are promising for River Road. Some of her recent publications have been utterly formulaic and predictable, but this book -- All Night Long -- is great. Really a fun read!

Luke Donner, US-Marines, retired, buys a rustic set of cabins set beside a lake. When guests check into his lodge, he bosses them around like a grumpy grizzly and basically orders them to "fall in" and "bug off" -- I think he offered granola bars for breakfast. LOL. Some innkeeper!

However, when Irene checks in, he's definitely interested. He wonders why she seems so edgy, why she sleeps with the cabin lights on all night long (hence the title). When things get dangerously dicey, he's there for her. Protective and fierce. So is she, towards him. Great couple. Good passion, too.

The suspense is also very good. I didn't guess the plot immediately. I was truly on the edge of my seat several times, especially in the mansion and at the dock.

Krentz doesn't fill the text with excessive profanity and coarse descriptions of female sexual anatomy, and there's no drippy panties or expando-boobs in sight. Despite this strange lack, she somehow creates sizzle, with hard-edged heroes and independent heroines.

I prefer this prolific author's standalone novels -- historical or contemporary, paranormal or mundane. All of my favorites by Krentz / Quick / Castle are standalones.

"All Night Long." It started out keeping my interest, but it is definitely more about the mystery than the romance. The characters were just not that engaging (one-dimensional), and once began to take any shape at all, I still couldn't have cared less about them (very cardboard). At the point the author relegated the romance of the story to a "slam the door in my face," read as well . . . there just wasn't anything left to keep my interest (and this was coming off of JoAnn Ross's "Freefall" which blew my hair back with all that was going on in that book from the get-go). At one point, the hero is unknowingly sucked into an "intervention" set up by his family that insists the PTSD he suffers from is so overwhelming that he needs serious "help" and in-patient counseling. While this is going on, the hero is so laid back and patient with them . . . he was the epitome of "coolness" itself. Huh? In fact, the author portrays his family like a bunch of nitwit nut cases, and he seems to be the ONLY normal one in the room! The premise was so stupid at this point -- I DNF'd it! I didn't care what the solution to the mystery was, nor whether this couple got together in the end. [*YAWN*:]

Y pobre Lionel Richie... He estado tantos días tarareando su canción que le he cogido manía…All night long, all night, all night…

It began promisingly good and with some very funny moments but it ended badly...
I have a weakness for crime stories settled in small towns. I tend to like them so much that I can forgive a bad romance if the mystery is well done, I still can enjoy the story a lot. In this case neither the romance (another case of insta-lust) nor the mystery are good.
The romance has been a mixt of insta-lust and insta-love. As soon as the hero (Luke) sees the heroine (Irene) on the other side of his hotel's reception desk, he suffers an erection and after three hours (!!) is still, and I quote, "disturbingly aroused". It is not the best basis for a romance, if you ask me, but this is only a personal opinion. Where the author fails is in the presentation of Luke, he should be a hard ex-marine accustomed to giving orders, but it ends up being a annoying laid back person who allows his family harasses and accuses him of tremendously important things without reason and he makes nothing to settle things nor amend the situation, situation which base is ridiculous and implausible.

Another thing that has made me disconnect of the romance is that, on two occasions, after living a dreadful situation the MC´s can´t think in another thing than to have sex, I do not think it´s a very subtle way to blend the romance and the crime plot together... it has seemed very unfortunate, I yet hadn´t get rid of the repulsive feeling that the crime left with me when I had to endure a sex scene... nope...
As for the suspense, I think that it did not work for me because I have not managed to believe it. It is a fundamental part, when it comes to resolve a crime from the past, that the reader has a feeling that it has been fixed at the right time. Here, the feeling I had was that crime was not solved at the time because nobody wanted to. Directly and indirectly, there are 5 people who know ( or should know) who the murderer was... no one decides to do a thing about it, and what is worse, some even no pay for his role in the crime: rare and unlikely. If my parents are murdered and a guy comes to tell me that he is so sorry but that he did not know what to do at the time nor in the following 17 years, I do not think that I would have allow him get away with it with a lax "don't worry, I don't blame you"...
And last but not least, the TSTL heroine... How I hate when the author makes her heroine a stupid one to create the problem or conflict. Note to the heroine: since you have got a badass ex-marine as your lover, why don´t you follow his rules as soon as it began to appear dead bodies? Even on 3 occasions Irene decides to do things her way, as if it had not happened anything dangerous or disturbingly, as if this one was one more normal day of so many others... It had been too much.
All in all, the romance was not romantic at all and suspense has been based on the silence and the negligence of a pair of persons and the good luck that the bad guy is omnipresent and omnipotent, is the only explanation that I have found.
And poor Lionel Richie…I have been humming his song for so long I have developed a grudge against it… All night long, all night, all night…

Read in January 2009 and again in June 2009. Review is from 1st reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Jayne Ann Krentz book. JAK was one of my favorite authors, but after being disppointed by several of her books in a row years ago, I all but stopped reading her. I am so glad that I read this one, and it was good enough that I will go back and read others by her that I missed. All Night Long had a really good story with a mystery that kept me guessing, but what made this book were the two main characters and their interaction with one another. There were numerous interesting secondary characters, and there was enough humor to make the book a fun and easy read.

Irene Stenson returns to her hometown seventeen years after finding the bodies of her parents in an apparent murder-suicide. Her former best friend, Pamela Webb has contacted her and asked for a meeting. When it appears that Pamela has ditched their meeting, Irene investigates and discovers Pamela's body, another apparent suicide. Irene has never believed that her father committed the horrible crimes seventeen years ago, and although she hasn't known Pamela during the past seventeen years, she doesn't believe she would take her own life. Irene, a reporter for a small newspaper, believes that the town holds secrets that must be uncovered. She is staying a a local lodge owned by an ex-marine, Luke Danner. Luke's protective instincts kick in immediately and he accompanies or follows Irene as she investigates.

Luke's interfering but well meaning family are trying to intercede in his life because they believe that he is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They wrongly believe that he is losing his grip and are worried that he is a danger to himself. Irene accepts Luke's past and all of his eccentricities without batting an eye, and he does the same for her. Both are aware that the other is dealing with plenty of baggage, but they respect and quickly come to care deeply for one another. They work together to discover the secrets that the town holds while trying to avoid danger themselves.

All Night Long was an entertaining and fun book to read. The two main characters were well written and there was plenty of chemistry between them. The mystery was not easy to unravel, and there was quite a lot of action. This book will definitely have me reading more JAK soon.

Fast paced and pleasant, this is the story of Irene, a 32 year old reporter whose parents died in violent circumstances 17 years ago. An email sent from a past friend plunges Irene back into her horrid and traumatic past.

An interesting mystery and likeable characters, it only gets 3 stars because the dialogue felt cheesy at times and the author created emotionally and psychologically distressed characters, when she obviously isn't professionally equipped to describe or discuss psychological issues. What kind of psychiatrist tells their patient " You have a problem and you're going to allow me to help you whether you want to or not".... uuuuh...no. Krentz held on to one label and kept brandishing it throughout the book: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I didn't buy that part of the characters.

All that aside, it was a solid plot, with a heartbreaking mystery. However, as this is more of a romance chick lit. novel, the author focused more on the love emotions and aspect of the story, rather than the devastating topic she presented at the end. Again, that made the whole thing feel a bit unbelievable.

Krentz gets full marks from me for Irene and Luke's relationship though. Luke is a typical Alpha Male, yet Krentz introduces him with class and in a gentleman light. Furthermore, Irene is a kick ass alpha woman herself and they blended in a tender and lovely way. None of that abusive, pushing around shit that authors and readers alike seem to get a kick out of these days. Thank you Krentz.

Seventeen years ago, Irene Stenson found her parents corpses in their kitchen. The crime, ruled murder-suicide, has scarred her for life, since she couldn’t come to grips with the fact her father could’ve killed her mother, and so unable to put it all behind.

Now, Irene, an investigative reported with a small newspaper, receives an e-mail from her once-best friend, the one who was with her on the night that had changed her life, inviting her back into her hometown with promises of explanations about the past.

But instead of explanations, Irene finds more questions, when she finds her friend dead of a supposed overdose, while the very next day her friend’s house burns down. Something’s not right, but the local police denies any suspicions, yet Irene isn’t alone in her little investigation. Luke Danner, the owner of the resort Irene’s staying in, feels not all dots are connected, and knows Irene is right in the middle of the emerging picture.

Oh, wow. This is how you write romantic suspense, and this is what I’ve been missing lately in Ms Krentz’s novels.

Great characters, both scarred, both with issues not many people can understand or relate to, but they’ve each managed to find someone who does.
Both Irene and Luke (although we can only imagine what he went through) went through horrible experiences, and yes, those experiences have marked them, but didn’t put them out of commission, they’ve come back swinging and stronger for it.
And in the end, against all odds, both their diagnoses (hers confirmed, his not so much), despite his meddling family (which was the “weakest” part of the story, if you ask me, since it didn’t really “connect” with the overall plot), despite everything they found each other, that someone who can understand, who can relate, and who can help battle the demons when they struck.
Their chemistry was sizzling, and almost palpable, their romance rather believable, if a bit rushed, their communication both serious and funny...Boy, howdy, I loved them to bits.

But romance, no matter how strong the characters are, isn’t enough to make a romantic suspense novel. You also need suspense, and this one had it in spades.
Gripping, intense, edge-of-your-seat, keeping-you-guessing-until-the-last-page suspense. Nicely paced, well-written, well-plotted out, with many red-herrings along the way, and when the big reveal came (well, both of them), I just couldn’t. I absolutely didn’t see it coming, but in the end, the villain, the motive, everything made perfect sense.
Wow.

This one truly had it all; wonderful, layered characters, great chemistry and romance, a good supporting cast, gripping suspense with loads of misdirection, and the main villain you won’t see coming.

More, please.

This novel is a classical Krentz, a delightful mix of murder mystery and a romantic tale. Add a 17-year-old gruesome murder, a mysterious fatal OD of a senator’s glamorous daughter, an investigative reporter, a damaged former Marine with a Philosophy PhD, and a small town with a bunch of quirky characters, and you might get this novel… if you’re as talented as this author.
One of the reviewers said once that Krentz is predictable, and all her novels are essentially the same story. I agree. I know that I can always count on this writer to deliver an uplifting tale, full of tension, danger, and love. She didn’t disappoint me with this novel.
The pace is very swift, the risk level for the heroine mounts steadily, as an unknown murderer runs around unchecked, but the romantic interludes between the heroes make the whole reading experience sweet and absorbing. I didn’t want to put the book down.
The fact that the heroes are not real people but the author’s romance novel representations of a man and a woman didn’t diminish my joy of devouring this book.
Recommended for all romance fans.

Irene´s childhood ended brutally when her parents died in a tragedy. She left the little town and all friends never to look back. Until now, when her then best friend gets in touch with a strange message.
Back in Dunsley the mystery gets worse, when the meeting with Pamela doesn´t happen - since she too dies. Now what?
This is something she as a reporter can´t ignore, and now has to investigate.
Help comes unexpected from the owner of the lodge where she´s staying, Luke. Ex-marine and with a need to follow leads, and very tempting. When the mystery thickens they´ll have to join forces to find out what´s really happened.
Contemporary Romance, suspense and smutty fluff in a great combo.
Listened to the audio version and the narrator was great.

Trigger warning child abuse/rape.

Much better than I expected probably one of the best JAK books I have read. This had lots of small town and political intrigue with murder, suspense and great well developed characters. Luke a retired marine is gruff and bossy. He bought a small guest lodge but treats his "guest" like new recruits with lots of rules that are so out of line that it's amazing anyone stays there.
One of his guests is Irene a reporter who was raised in this town till she was 15 yrs old. She has come back to town at a mysterious request from a former childhood friend who she has not seen in 17 yrs.
Loved the main couple and how they slowly became involved by finding a dead body together along with almost being burned alive in a house fire.
Plenty of twists and turns as well as a lot of suspects. Story unfolds with well plotted clues but the end was still a surprise.
