Shoyo Hinata is out to prove that in volleyball you don't need to be tall to fly!
Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! He decides to join the team at the high school the Little Giant went to—and then surpass him. Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?
The training camp kicks off with a bang! Hinata and his teammates train their hearts out in preparation for the practice game against Nekoma, but they'll need to polish their receiving skills if they want to win. Then finally, after all their hard work, the moment they’ve all been waiting for arrives—the revival of the long-standing rivalry between the cats and the crows! And Nekoma’s starting setter looks vaguely familiar…
I started reading this manga title awhile ago, but for some reason, my library system only had the first three volumes. I devoured them pretty quickly and *needed* to know what happened next, so I binge-watched the anime. Sadly, the anime is still incomplete and hasn't released any episodes since December 2016!! Thankfully, my library has started purchasing more volumes of the manga, so it's given me an excuse to revisit this story and these characters.
This volume in particular introduces readers to the Nekoma squad, an old rival of Karasuno's who lost touch after the latter lost their coach. As far as story goes, not much happens outside of a practice match between the two teams, but this game serves to further demonstrate how underdeveloped of a team Karasuno is, despite the raw talent their players have. One of my favourite things about this series is how *hard* the characters actually have to work to become better players (unlike, say, Kuroko's Basketball, which has characters with stupid levels of skill that treads outside the realm of realism.)
I especially love the end of this volume as the characters from both teams get some time to chat after their practice matches. The humour, and seeing them genuinely enjoy each other's company was very sweet and offered some more humour (Yamamoto and Ryo were standouts.)
There's still a lot of volumes for me to read to be caught up, but I look forward to doing that this year and spending more time with these characters, even knowing how the plot will shake out for the next long while.
This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga
”You don’t win alone. That’s just how it is.”

I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.
It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.
When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.
PLOT: ★★★★★ The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.
ART STYLE: ★★★★★ The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.
CHARACTERS: ★★★★★ The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.
The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.
This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.
*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++
Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^
THEMES: ★★★★★ Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.
PACING: ★★★★★ THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.
It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)
PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★
You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)
I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.
This volume bored me a little? There was nothing wrong with it and the pacing and characters are fine, but I’ve noticed so far that I like the volumes digging into the characters’ personal struggles the most and we didn’t have much of that here. Which is totally fine! It just also made the strictly game aspect a bit boring.
(which is stupid considering this is a series entirely based on volleyball—a GAME—but yeah try convincing my brain that 🙄)
Several of the guys from the opposite teams connecting and yammering at the end did make me chuckle though I know for sure I’m not going to remember all these guys on all these different teams, lol. I usually do well with large casts but this one is really getting to me! 😂
Will be continuing with the series!

I forgot how much I adore how Karasuno and Nekoma interact with one another. They're rivals, yet they still act like the greatest of friends in a sense. It makes it all the more funny that the lead writer for the anime adaptation of Haikyuu also worked on Prince of Stride: Alternative, which has a very similar dynamic.
I'm also noticing that the background expressions in a few panels give me SO much life. They are all iconic. Makes me super excited for the next few matches actually, though I was also feeling that way when watching the anime too.
The match between Nekoma and Karasuno and great spotlight on Hinata as he finds new ways to overcome the limitations and challenges, great art and explanations throughout!
We learn why Kenma dyed his hair and I died laughing. I love both Nekoma and Karasuno teams very much and seeing their interactions with each other is everything. Having Nekoma be so fluid together as a team will only push Karasuno to work harder together and become a better working team (instead of great individuals) as well. I look forward to seeing it.
Suga is an angel, and we are not worthy. Ukai, the crazy loveable coach, has finally decided he is here to stay and everyone is in love with Kiyoko.
I got a little bored while reading this... I ended up having dual fantasies of wanting to just watch the anime instead and/or just hurry up and finish it so I could go back to reading School Rumble...
Nekoma kept their cool and momentum going throughout the game. Against Nekoma's wholesome team, Karasuno's patchwork team never stood a chance but atleast they gave their best. I'm looking forward to their re-match in the big leagues.
Ho tre libri in lettura, ma ho scelto di leggere questo. Non me ne sono pentita. Bel capitolo, veramente. Ho apprezzato soprattutto la spiegazione del ruolo del libero, che non avevo mai capito prima nella mia vita XD
I still don’t understand all the rules of the Libero. Even watching the Olympics, I don’t quite get the subbing part, but it’s interesting. It’s crazy how many Shonen use the exact same character types though.
Volume 4 of Haikyu!! focuses on Karasuno’s practice game against Nekoma.
I have a new found love for Suga after this volume. He’s one of the most thoughtful, and responsible teenage characters I’ve ever come across and I very much admire his devotion to the volleyball club members. I found Ukai’s dilemma of having to choose which setter to start with very compelling, and while I do have a favourite, I also thought it a really tough call.
As for Nekoma, I initially thought making a team that mirrors Karasuno’s in regards to the personalities of the characters to be a bit lazy. I had a change of opinion though, the more I got to know Nekoma, and found that each character was able to stand apart from their counterparts and I ended up really liking them all. And while there were similarities in terms of personalities for the two teams, as a whole they were really quite different. I thought the contrast between Karasuno and Nekoma, Nekoma being this extremely sturdy team whose players are used to each other, made Karasuno feel a lot more thrown together, and I am looking forward to seeing the crows come together and form stronger bonds between members. I also love that Kenma’s an unlikely setter, and that he really plays on his observational skills and smarts to lead his team forward. His dynamic with with Kuroo is one of my favourites, and I love that Kuroo is able to fully see and utilize Kenma's abilities.
As for the game, admittedly I wasn't overly invested at first. It was fun seeing Karasuno get ahead, but the turn around and watching Nekoma slowly but solidly build up points wasn't the most interesting thing ever. And watching Hinata fail, and fail again was starting to get discouraging, but I love him for his determination, and the rest of the team for how much they support him. The second set really turned things around for me in terms of entertainment, with Hinata finally branching out from his usual quick set with Kageyama. This development was always going to happen, in order to improve and stop relying on Kageyama so much Hinata definitely needed more in his arsenal, and I’m glad he's working on it this early on in the series. Also, finally seeing Hinata make it through the wall only to have his ball received, that was frustrating but in the best way possible. The rivalry built up in this volume is one that is so easy to get behind, and I can’t wait to see these teams face off again.
New babies acquired! I never looked at Inuoka and Tora before... but, augh! Baby boys. They are so adorable! Especially Tora. My God, he's bawling his eyes out saying goodbye to Karasuno esp Ryuu. Had me laughing at how cute he was!
