As his family left the graveside Devon stood there, rigid in the cold, staring at her ex-boyfriend’s coffin. I’m so sorry, Ty. So very sorry…
Deadly Descent is the first book in the Romantic Suspense series, Bagram Special Ops by Kaylea Cross, and it’s also my first experience with this author’s writing. I was excited to read this story because the central characters are not who we typically see in this genre – SEALs, Rangers, Black Ops Agents, etc.; rather these men and women are working on the medical side of things. I found it to be a very fascinating story from this standpoint alone and was thrilled that Ms. Cross gave us such a deep look into their lives and missions. I had absolutely no idea what they faced at any given time, and I while I hold the greatest respect for all military men and women, I now have a deeper respect for those whose job it is to save the lives of the SEALs, Rangers, Black Ops Agents, etc., and who put their own lives on the line to do so. Without their know-how and their bravery, who knows how many more men and women would be lost.

I absolutely loved our hero and heroine, Cameron Munroe and Devon “Spike” Crawford who are brave, honorable people. Cam is an Air Force Pararescueman whose job it is to go into dangerous situations and provide medical aid to those wounded in the line of duty, or those innocents caught in the crossfire. What he does out there can make the difference between life and death. Dev is a Black Hawk pilot who also goes into dangerous situations to evacuate those wounded and transport them back to the base hospital for further medical care. As with Cam, how well Dev does her job can mean the difference between saving a life or losing one.

Minor plot spoilers that are given in the prologue -

A good bit of the early pages were devoted to the necessary character and world development, but I never found it dull or tedious. In fact, as I said before, I loved learning about another branch of the military and seeing how it operates on and off the battlefield. And while it is emotional at times, the story that unfolds is not dark and depressing. There’s much, much more to Deadly Descent than what I’ve told you so far, but I don’t want to give anymore away other than to say the last half of the book had me on the edge of my seat, heart pounding. We get a close up look at what it’s like to come under fire, to have the enemy close on your heels and not know if you’re going to make it out alive. And did I mention I stayed up until 4:00AM to finish this??

The bottom line – If you want a story full of detail, action, passion, sexual tension, heat and romance, this is a great one to go with. I am beyond thrilled to have found another author who knows how to write Romantic Suspense and make it just that – both romantic and truly suspenseful. The characters are amazing people who I couldn’t help but cheer for and their story was heartwarming and intense. I will most definitely be reading more by Kaylea Cross. In fact, just today I purchased her entire Suspense Series and can’t wait to dig in!

"Love is like war; easy to begin but very hard to stop."
- by Henry Louis Mencken

 photo Bildschirmfoto2013-03-02um105459_zps4c5ab6f8.png

Tech Sergeant Cameron Munro is an U.S. Air Force pararescue jumper, the best trained search and rescue teams in the U.S. military. Their motto - That Others May Live – says it all. They are highly trained to save lives and on the other hand PJ's also know how to kill if necessary.

Captain Devon 'Spike' Crawford, Black Hawk helicopter pilot commander flies medevac missions. She has to deal with guilt issues after the death of her 'boyfriend' Ty on a mission in Afghanistan. Ty was also a PJ. Dev and Ty dated only for a few weeks before he deployed. She cared a lot for him but she wasn't really in love with Ty. They had fun together but nothing really serious. And then Dev met Ty's friend Cam Munro. Dev realized that she felt much more drawn to him than she was to Ty. However, there's this problem...both their careers could be in jeopardy if they're caught in a relationship since Dev is an officer and Cam is enlisted. When they both end up stationed at the same base in Bagram, Afghanistan, things start to move and the sparks are flying between Cam and Dev. And they are falling for each other quite hard!

Cam is a gorgeous alpha male hero. He's tough, hot, sweet, and tender all at the same time. He's a protector and throughout this book his first priority is Dev and her well-being and safety. This being said, Dev could hold her own though, and I really appreciated to read about a strong and brave heroine.

The women in Deadly Descent know how to kick ass. Loved them all and I know that the next book in the Bagram Spec Ops series is about Ryan and Candace 'Ace'. I really liked their banter and I'm already on pins and needles to read their story.

I'm not a military expert, therefore I cannot say if the operations in this story are authentic. But it certainly reads realistically, and since Kaylea is such a Spec Ops addict, it goes without saying that she did a great job with the research for her new series. As it was, I especially loved the main and very long action part of Deadly Descent. It was simply outstanding, and I believe the book title fit perfectly. The action and tension kept me on my toes, that's for sure. Also, war is not pretty, so please be prepared for some gory scenes.

Subsidiary censure
Cam and Devon's romance could have been developed more. Though I have to assume that it was difficult to fully develop their relationship/romance because of the length of this book. Hence, I think the book should have been longer.

Devon said once I admire the hell out of all of you. Very true and I can't say it any better. Every enlisted man/woman deserves our appreciation.

I am not going to go into detail about what the book is about as the synopsis does a good job of that and there are plenty of reviews out there that gives more detail.

I have never read a Kaylea Cross book before so didn't really know what to expect. I had seen quite a few raving reviews about this book and I had had it for quite a while but hadn't got around to reading it but as soon as I started the first chapter I knew that I was going to enjoy the rest of the book. I immediately tuned into Kaylea's style of writing and was gripped from start to finish; she provides so much military detail that a lot of authors tend to skip over. I will admit at times I had to stop and think what was she talking about and on a few occasions even grabbed my phone and hit the internet to find things out, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book in fact it increased it - that extra detail helped me to try and visualise the scene and what could possibly be going on. Due to daily life I was forced to stop reading several times but continued to think about it and couldn't wait to pick it up again and carrying on reading and I ended up staying up into the early hours of the morning as I was gripped and just couldn't put it down.

I really liked Devon, she was a strong and very brave woman who had fears and insecurities which made her character believable. Cam was a sexy hero who would do anything to save the woman that he loved even if that included dying himself. What I really liked about this story was that Devon and Cam had declared their love for each other before the mission went sour - In most stories the H and h continue to hide their feelings for each other right until the end. All of the men featured were super fit and super sexy and I am so looking forward to reading Ryan's story.

In my opinion this book fully deserves the top rating of 5 stars and if you are looking for a book that is about military men and is full of suspense, romance and a lot of sexual tension then this is the book for you and I am definitely rating Kaylea Cross as one of my RS authors.

According to Kaylea's website (@ March 2012) she is in the process of writing the second book in the series and has a working title of 'Danger Close' - Unfortunately there is no expected publication date yet http://kayleacross.com/v2/coming-soon/

OMG! This book was so spectacular, I still have tears running down my face and I can still feel my heart pounding from this book, just AMAZING.

This book grabbed me right from the start and never let go. I absolutely LOVED all the characters in this story.

The first half got you all set up with the characters and just what they did and how they lived while serving our country in the military. It also set up the romance part of the story and I really felt the connection big time between Cam and Devin. The sexual tension was off the charts.

The second half, the action started and oh my I was just riveted to the pages. I'm sitting here shaking my head because I just can't explain how fantastic all of this book was for me.

We did not get a love scene until the end of the book but I'll tell you what, it was worth the wait. As I read it I really felt the love leaping off of the pages and it just took my breath away and made me so emotional because of the love I felt while reading it. OH MY, I'm tearing up just writing about this.

Needless to say if you have been thinking about reading this book, what are you waiting for. I'm sure you will love it as much as all of us lucky one's who have already had the pleasure of reading it.

Well done Kaylea Cross you have just made a HUGE fan of me. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series to be released. It will be a must buy and must read as soon as it's out. I bet it won't be long before I read all the other book's you've released to date. Thank you for writing such a fantastic story for all us romance book lovers.

Having always come across rave reviews of books by Kaylea Cross, I was more than prepared to delve into a story which I knew would hit all the right spots. And I am glad to report back that it certainly did hit all the right spots and then some with my very first Kaylea Cross which turned out to be the first book in her Bagram Special Ops series which hit the stands on the 5th of this month.

Captain and pilot commander Devon Crawford known as Spike amongst her friends and team mates faces the biggest dilemma of her life when she finds herself yearning for her boyfriend Ty's bestfriend Cam Munro. From the first moment she had laid eyes on Cam, she had felt unsettled and the guilt of it all makes her pretty uneasy around his company though Cam had become one of her closest and trusted friends over time.

Technical Sergeant Cam Munro is a pararescueman in the U.S. Airforce. When his best friend Ty gets killed in active duty in the mountains of Afghanistan, it is Devon who takes his death the hardest not because she grieves for the man she loved but rather because she feels the guilt that is associated with her feelings towards Cam.

Though Cam respects Devon's need to distance herself from him, Cam is playing for keeps and is not willing to go down without a fight to win the love of the woman who means everything to him. But with the strict military rules that prevent members of its forces from fraternizing coupled together with Devon's need to work through her muddled feelings at her own pace, Cam who is patience personified finds himself tested severely as slow torturous inch by inch Devon starts to respond to the depth of need that Cam doesn't want to hide any longer.

With heady adventure and military jargon that I found myself lost in sometimes, Deadly Descent is a novel that is as realistic as they come in depicting the different sides involved in the war on terror that jumpstarted with the 9/11 attacks on the US soil.

Kaylea Cross's voice and prose is certainly an addictive one, easy to lose onself in though I sometimes wished for a glossary of certain terms used in the story. For someone who hails from a small country where the need for a super active military is at a minimum, I found myself a bit lost at times. But then again, the adventure aspect of the novel is fast paced which makes it hard not to bite your nails in apprehension wondering what would happen next and how and why a certain mad man is hell bent on getting his revenge and vengeance by killing Cam and and Devon amidst the the warlord's agenda which is a bone chilling one.

Kaylea Cross has certainly done her homework on the aspects of the Islamic religion that is discussed in the novel and that earns a lot of respect from myself as a muslim. The fact that Kaylea explores the impact of a war that seems to make lesser sense as the casualities on both sides seems to grow sat well with me as I delved deeper into the story.

The way Kaylea puts forth her characters is one reason that makes Deadly Descent so readable. Even the villains are muti-faceted, not just a character created for namesake but rather a character that makes ones hairs stand at end because yes, the vicious and practical plan that he has in order to bring the US forces to its knees is a deceptively simple and a chilling one at the same time.

That brings me to Cam's character who is so darn yummylicious in his own right. Laid back yes he is, but once he sets his eyes on Devon and wows to make her his, there is no stopping him from staking his claim and wooing her all at the same time. My disappointment because there wasn't much romance towards the latter part of the book was totally forgotten from the moment Cam and Devon lights up the sheets and practically left me breathless throughout the encounter. Kaylea definitely knows what she is doing with her ultra yummy alpha heroes and the military plus the adventure aspects of the novel which makes it a winner all around!

Momentous Scenes

- The first time Cam confronts Devon about their feelings towards each other. Such an emotion invoking scene!

- The helicopter crash scene. Utterly horrifying because it was so darn realistic!

- The sexual tension between Cam and Devon throughout the novel. Definitely the toe curling variety right there.

My Quotes included below the review.

OMG OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK! This was my first military romance and Kaylea Cross book, it will not be my last. This story was non-stop, a wonderful romance, it had me crying, scared and swooning! I loved the hero and heroine in this story, they were both tough, brave, caring, I immediately felt connect to these two. I actually liked all the characters in this story, I would welcome a book about any of them! The heat level is pretty low in this book, but the sexual tension and the chemistry between these two is off the charts. I wanted them to get together, yet I was afraid they would get caught Devin is an officer (she a pilot) and Cam is an enlisted man (Pararescue Jumper).

I love it when i can connect with two characters in a book, i get swept up in the story, I am happy when they are happy, and sad when they are sad. And if someone is trying to hurt them I want to kiss their butt! I don't have to tell you that is exactly what happened to me reading this.

Kaylea Cross is a very talented writer and she now has one more fan!

Deadly Descent was the first in a series and the characters introduced interest me a lot.

Devon is a med-evac pilot and an officer when she makes a call to turn back(due to bad visibility), which she later finds out was for her ex-boyfriend Pararescueman(PJ) Ty, she feels incredibly guilty because of that and also the feelings she has for his friend Cam.
Once his funeral is over, Cam confronts the issue head-on and acknowledges the attraction he has for her and that it is not wrong but Dev isn't ready and he doesn't want to push.

Cam is one the sweetest hero I've read, he's an alpha and kick-ass, his job is dangerous but he's so understanding with Dev, he doesn't make light of her need to think, space and even the fact that he is enlisted. He calls her mam when people are present and doesn't do anything that would harm her career.

Dev on her part knows what she feels for Cam is more than hormones and he may be "the one" and once she is ready there is no stopping her.
We of course have a sub-plot with a guy recruiting people to avenge his brother's death by Americans but the book on the whole was very well-written. There was a good blend of romance and depiction of a military base and operations.

Read this over a year ago, I think, but decided to re-read before getting to the next one in the series. Wow, seriously good writing. No sex until nearly end of the book and I loved it!! Something not right there or else something very right - the fact that Ms Cross is such a compelling storyteller that I was totally caught up in the whole atmosphere. Stuck out there in the desert, waiting for rescue, you could feel the tension. I really don't know how Army personnel stick it, being away from home for long periods of time, trying to keep relationships. It must be very tough. Loved that some of the women were really kick-ass and had higher ranking than some of the men. Look forward to the next one.

Review posted: Happily Ever After - Reads

The fact that she flew a Black Hawk and could talk shop with the best of them? Hot as hell. And her laugh. God, she had the dirtiest laugh he’d ever heard. Every time he heard it he thought of sex. Hot, sweaty sex, the kind that left a man exhausted and weak and his partner unable to move.

Not only was this my first Kaylea Cross book, but it’s the first story I’ve read that’s centered around military-suspense. Devon, after losing her father in an airplane crash, takes control of her fears and learns to fly, not airplanes, helicopters. She flies the medical team in, and brings the wounded back. I should have known I’d be in for an intense ride from the first page when Dev is forced to make the call to turn back while heading out on an evacuation. The visibility was zero and she returns to base, knowing that she’s leaving men out there, alone and hurt. One of those men is Ty, her boyfriend, who doesn’t make it back and dies in the field. While their relationship wasn’t serious, and she was even getting ready to break it off with him, the guilt she feels over not flying and taking the chance eats at her. I mean really, in the first chapter we have Ty’s funeral, and I was close to a crying mess by page 5! Ty’s best friends and fellow Pararescuemen (PJ's), Ryan and Cam, are there to say goodbye to Ty, and afterward, we get our first taste of the chemistry that’s been slowly building between Cam and Dev, and it can’t go unnoticed between them anymore. While they don’t even go so far as to comfort each other after the funeral, it’s clear that the attraction is strong, but time isn’t on their side as they’re all heading back overseas again.

Three weeks after the funeral, Dev, Cam, and Ryan all find themselves at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. There’s a group Pakistan men lead by one General who are all anti-American, and we follow one young man, Sadiq through the book. He wants revenge for his brother’s death and sets his sights on killing the “PJ” after seeing these initials on a rescueman’s uniform, Ty, who wasn’t able to help his dying brother. He sees the initials again on Cam’s uniform and vows to kill him for his brother. With the story taking place in a warzone, fighting takes center stage but the book was really about two intense extremes: the action out in the field and Dev & Cam.

Saying the action is intense, is an understatement. Cross writes the life in Bagram and in the air on the helo with such ease, that it puts the reader right there in the scene. In one of the most action packed sequences, Dev’s helicopter is shot and going down. It was so detailed and intense I swear I felt like I was sitting right next to her, trying to grab the controls to help her. I love it when authors can paint a picture that not only lets you put yourself fully into the story, but it’s like you’re actually experiencing it with the characters. All of the action scenes were so well done and detailed enough to keep me completely in the moment. When the POV switched back to the Sadiq, I really just wanted to hurry through his part to get back to the lead characters.

“You’ll have to take me up sometime.”

She shot him a bland look. “Right, because you don’t get enough chopper rides already.”

“Never been up with a female pilot, though.”

Because she was tempted to keep staring, she looked away from his beautiful face. “Well, we fly pretty much the same as the boys do.” Only better.

The second intense extreme is Cam and Dev’s romance. Not much could really happen between them in Bagram, Dev would be putting her position on the line if their relationship was ever found out, plus having dated Ty, she’s worried about being thought of as a PJ groupie. So needless to say, Dev’s very hesitant to act on any of her feelings towards Cam. Cam knows what he wants, and he wants Dev. He understands the position they're both in and they grow closer when they’re in Bagram, but never cross the line. Dev promises that the first time they’re together, he wants a big bed and lots of time, and through all the injuries and terrible moments, I was constantly waiting for him to be able to make good on that promise, and it’s worth the wait!

She whipped around. Cam stood at the hanger entrance in his combat uniform, that heart-melting crooked smile on his face. She couldn’t move as he strode toward her, tall and strong and looking so damn heroic he broke her heart without even trying. Her throat tightened.

I was hesitant at first to read something centered around a warzone and the military. It could have really veered into too much reality in my nice little, fantasy reading world. But, I actually found the realness and detail that Cross writes with, makes this story. She puts you right in the middle of the fight, right on board the helo that’s going down, and right on the sidelines as Dev worries and cries for Cam, not knowing if he’ll make it back from a rescue mission. With as strong as the action and suspense was, it’s the even stronger characters that balance it all out – I’m already looking forward to getting the other stories for the people we meet in this book. I was caught up in the story and with Dev and Cam through it all, and can’t wait to read more from Kaylea Cross.

Deadly Descent is the first book in KC's Bagram Special Ops series featuring Black Hawk pilot, Devon Crawford and Air Force Pararescueman, Cameron Munroe.

As a helicopter pilot, Dev's missions involve transporting a rescue team and bringing the wounded back to safety and much needed medical care. Cam's job often finds him on the ground and in the thick of things as he provides medical care for those wounded in the line of duty. Both encounter dangerous situations as their work takes them into enemy territory.

One of the best things about this book is how well the author portrays the bravery, loyalty and dedication from not only the soldiers but the rescue and medical teams as well. I came away even more humbled by the sacrifices that are given to ensure a better world for all.

Action, suspense along with two very lovable MC's and a beautiful love story all combine to make this a fantastic read. The tension and anxiety I felt during the second half kept me fully invested and I hated to put this book down. The unique situation affecting Cam and Dev’s relationship, along with being in the midst of a war, all added to the sizzling chemistry and heartfelt longing existing between this couple.

This is my second read by this author and as most already know, this is Romantic Suspense at its best. And while RS is not my usual choice of genre, I’m now anxious for more.

Thank you to Kaylea Cross and Carina Press for my early Birthday Present! A copy of Deadly Descent!

Kaylea Cross writes characters so well. Deadly Descent is no different in that regard. This romantic suspense novel is more romance and character based than suspense based. It's not a bad thing at all, I was really in the mood for something a little lighter, but still intense and Deadly Descent Delivered.

Black Hawk Medivac Pilot Devon “Spike” Crawfield has faced a lot of personal tragedy. Witness to an awful plane crash that shatters her youth, she took her fear and harnessed it into a career as a Helicopter pilot. After a decision to abort a mission to rescue down soldiers on a foggy evening with zero visibility, Devon heads back to base and prays she made the right call. As the Captain and Pilot, it is her first priority to keep her crew and her helo safe. A few hours later, she gets word of who died as a result of her Command and responsibility and she wallows in doubt and grief.

Cam Munro is a Pararescueman {Woot!} and enlisted. Which causes all sorts of problems for relationships with superior officers. The thing is...the Military frowns upon it, and you can be written up for fraternization. {Which, can I tell you, sucks in my opinion} Him and Devon have been tap dancing around the sexual tension and feelings for months, but there were always things in the way—like the fact that Devon was casually dating Cam's best fried Ty. But Ty is gone now, and the way is clear. Cam is sexy, sweet, loyal and understanding. He was such an intense and calm male. I loved him and loved the way he was written.

The Plot and Climax revolve around Devon's Hawk being shot down in hostile territory, and the rescue mission to save her and her crew. It was riveting and full of action and drama. Some of the scenes felt so real and were very touching.

I loved how Devon wasn't an ass-kicking female lead. Yes, she is an Officer in the Army, and Yes she has Command, but she didn't wield it like a bitch. She held her power close to the vest and just let herself be who she was. When faced with hostiles and the safety of her crew after her Black Hawk is shot down, she steps up and proves to be smart, stubborn, and brave. Despite not having much training in the field, she held her own and persevered. I admired the shit out of her.

The secondary characters were well written and captivating as well. I hope to see SEAL Ryan and Pilot Candace “Ace” next.

Grade: B+ for a lighter Romantic Suspense novel with very awesome Military Leads.

4 stars.

I wish I could have loved this more. Not to say that it wasn't a great read but I didn't feel the same excitement reading this as I did with Kaylea Cross' Suspense series. I think there are a couple of reasons that put a dampener on it for me:

1) For the first half Devon was trying very hard not to be attracted to Cam. The reason for this is due to the fact that she is repressed by guilt and grief over the unfortunate passing of her boyfriend, who also happens to be Cam's best friend. I'm not heartless. I can understand how this would be such a hard situation to go through; but she had fallen in love with Cam the moment she met him - before Ty died. And her and Ty had dated for maybe a month and then broken things off when he got called out on duty. It made for a whole lot of angst that I normally wouldn't mind, but I became so depressed over it and just wanted her to hurry up and make Cam hers because they deserved to be happy.

2) Devon's female friends drove me up the wall. Devon had male friends okay - she works with them, she likes hanging out with them, playing pool with them, watching football with them. Why is it that we as a female species are the most vicious to ourselves and each other? According to Dev's friend Candace, Dev made the other girls "look bad" because she got along better with men than they did. Whenever Dev hugged one of her male friends, there was raised eyebrows all around - as if these women were adolescents! God, that stuff just makes me so frustrated... grow up, honestly!

Oh and the real kicker is that whenever Devon actually allowed herself to look at Cam with love or hope in her eyes, Candace had to bring Dev roughly down from the clouds and remind her that fraternization would see her and Cam out on their butts. Way to be a supportive and understanding friend!

Rant over.

From the midway point, I couldn't put it down. I loved the technical stuff, having my eyes opened to the intricacies of Dev and Cam's jobs and the fight for their lives. It was spectacular reading and really made up for my above issues - which really had nothing to do with the quality of the writing or story, just my own opinions on how I want people to interact. :P

I'm really looking forward to the rest of the books in this series when they're written. Would love to see Ryan warm Candace up and can't wait for Jackson's story... he was so sweet!

Can I also just say that I love how Kaylea's heroes call their girls, "baby". It's the most adorable thing ever!

I could have sworn that Kaylea Cross is actually a military person herself. She writes very vivid and detailed combat scenes that I have never read in romance books before. It was like reading about the behind-the-scenes of the actual military going-ons. Absolutely knowledgeable.

description

But I didn't rate it 5 stars for the thrilling combat scenes alone. Devon and Cameron were very HOT together. I gotta say that KC's H/h were never timid or annoying and sure enough, I loved Dev and Cam. They were very earthly and not too over the top heroic.

I can see book #2 coming up, what with the many characters brought out in the book. And I'm positive it's Ryan and Candace book next. Can't wait.

Kaylea Cross can certainly write military romance at its best. She blew me away with her highly intense "Deadly Descent." This one certainly draws on your emotions as well as keeping you on the edge-of-your-seat in the middle of an action-packed storyline. Every combat scene is realistic and vividly comes to life as you read. I felt as if I was riding co-pilot with "Spike" when she and her crew were shot down in Afghanistan. The romance is hot but very believable, the characters strong and willful, and a secondary cast that guarantees another great read as this series continues. There are some editing problems that caught my attention but certainly nothing to dramatically pull a reader away from the story. I highly recommend if you are a fan of military romance novels.

Been meaning to start a book by Cross forever! This was a nice intro to her writing. Lots of characters introduced, whom I assume get their own stories. I felt like there was a lot of backstory for this particular couple that we don't get. It's sort of glossed over, so that you get the feeling that they have this huge history, but in reality, the time they spend together falling in love is super minimal, so it was hard to understand them as a couple. The action scenes were awesome, though, and I loved the secondary story told from the villain's side. Will def continue the series!

Recently I read No Turning Back by Kaylea Cross, a very intense, military romance that I really enjoyed. When I head she had a new military romance trilogy coming out with Carina Press, I jumped on the chance to review it. Deadly Descent still has that intense vibe, but with an even more revved up romance.

Devon Crawford is an officer. She pilots Black Hawk helicopters during medical evacuations in the middle east, Bagram to be specific. She had been casually dating Ty, a parajumper who jumps into dangerous areas to rescue injured soldiers. But during an op, he is severely injured, and the fog is so bad, Dev can’t fly out to rescue him and he ends up dying.

Ty’s best friend happens to be fellow parajumper, Cam Munro. Although Dev was dating Ty when she met Cam, there was an instant spark between them. Now that Ty is dead, she feels very guilty for still feeling attracted to Cam. There is also the hurdle that Dev, an officer is higher ranked than the enlisted Cam. A relationship on base is not allowed between them.

The first half of Deadly Descent focuses on the mourning of Ty, and the developing relationship between Cam and Dev. Oh the angst of this relationship. Although Dev had not been dating Ty very long, not even to the point she loved him, she still cared for him and was good friends with him. His death hits Dev (and Cam) hard. Even more, as her feelings become stronger for Cam, the realization of just how dangerous their jobs are hits her hard. She could lose him just as quick as she lost Ty. As she comes to terms with her new found, and intense feelings for Cam, she slowly allows a relationship to form – something Cam is pushing for. But they also must be very careful about public displays of affection, as they could both get in trouble if their superiors know they are together. As I said, the romance in the first half is such a build-up of tension with the forbidden love and the guilt of a dead lover, and the danger of war. And we get scenes like this:

She lifted her face, and took him off guard by kissing him full on the lips. Hard and fast, the gesture so full of hunger it made him ache. Before he had a chance to respond, she drew back. Her fingers clenched in his jacket, and her face buried against his chest. “Cam…” The stark desire in her voice twisted his guts. He could feel her fighting with herself, and didn’t want to push her for anything she wasn’t willing to give without hesitation.

Baby….

During all of this angst, the character of Dev annoyed me slightly in that every single guy that she came in contact with on base fell for her. She is described as not being classically beautiful, but she has a sexy laugh, she loves football, she beats everyone in pool. She always has a gaggle of boys (do boys form a gaggle? Let’s go with it) surrounding her. Which makes Cam jealous, but it seemed to be overplayed and got on my nerves a bit.

But this leads us to the second half of the book, where I think this book shines. There is a villain-type person in this book named Sadiq. He follows the warlord, Nasrallah who is anti-American, and basically want the Americans out of Afghanistan. His theory is that if his men kill enough soldiers, the US will elect a new president who will win by campaigning to bring our troops home. Sadiq though has a more specific goal – his brother was killed by soldiers and he wants revenge.

Cam gets sent out on a long mission with some SEALs, meanwhile Dev gets a call to pick up some injured marines. But she is heading into hot territory – Nasrallah’s men happen to be close by and they start shooting at her helicopter. I won’t go into details about what happens next, but EEK! Sadiq, Cam and Dev all intertwine into some great action scenes. It is a very intense scene that is written really well. Coming back to my earlier problems with Dev, I love her character in the second half of the book. Her strength, determination and leadership make her more gritty.

We are also introduced to many supporting characters. Most notable Ryan, who is a very loud-mouth sarcastic parajumper and buddies with Cam and Dev. He has the hots for a pilot Candace who wants nothing to do with him and I believe their book is next. Besides the other pilots and jumpers we meet, there are many alpha SEALs on base and on their fateful mission that just add that extra oomph to this book that I really like.

If you are a fan of military or suspense romance I definitely recommend.

This book had great side characters and an incredibly fast paced plot that had me flying through the pages. The chemistry and sexual tension between Dev (a med-evacuation pilot) and Cam (a Pararescueman) was smokin!

Thanks to my friend Twinkle who recommend this series to me!

The second half of this book made all the difference. I was about 50% of the way through and thought, why all the hype. Then the real action started.

There were times I felt a little disconnected. Like I had missed something, a conversation, an action, a relationship. But by the end, it didn't matter. I really liked Cam. Really liked Cam. A very worthy Alpha. He was tough, strong, intelligent, and very gentle. A bit of a romantic. Dev, not so much. I liked her, but didn't think she was really all that and especially, not all that for Cam, but who am I to judge love and attraction...

Overall, a really nice story. I think KC does a fabulous job with the military theme. So authentic. Makes you feel like you are in the action along with all your favorite soldiers. Very good.

For me, this could have a 5 star book, but the first part dragged a bit and their was the feeling of disconnectedness I had a different points in the story.

If you like a military theme - Afghanistan, if you like strong male characters, who have a bit of a romantic side, then you may really like this story. I'll read more by this author.

Happy Readig!

a good reading. It was a bit slow on the beginning but in the end it was fast and packed with action.
I totally related with Devon. I can understand how she felt guilty for her feelings for Cam.
It's also very interesting reading about Afghanistan war. It made me feel very curious about it.

I'm reading the next one

She felt hot and dizzy. Weak yet hungry. Time slowed and expended, setting her adrift. He was gentle with her. She knew how turned on he was by the feel of his erection prodding her, but his kisses were tender and slow.

Deadly Descent was kindly provided to me by Netgalley for Carina Press

I absolutely loved Ms Cross’s Suspense series so was quite excited to get hold of Deadly Descent, the first book in her new Bagram Special Ops series.

Captain Devon ‘Spike’ Crawford flies Black Hawk medical evacuations and has returned to Bagram, Afghanistan to serve. Doubting herself due to a recent mission she had to abort due to extremely poor weather conditions resulting in the death of her ex-boyfriend Tyler Bradshaw she questions whether the decision she had to make was right or wrong.

Tech Sergeant Cam Munro is an Air Force Pararescueman and has had strong feelings for Devon since the moment he first met her, he has always held back because she was dating his best friend but was always aware his feelings were reciprocated so prior to deployment he confronts Devon but ends up leaving for Bagram without a resolution.

Devon and Cam are fighting the war against terror, not the best place to start a relationship but no longer able to deny her attraction and growing feelings for Cam, she decides to takes a leap of faith. There were a number of factors for why she shouldn’t pursue anything with him, not only her fear of getting involved whilst on duty but also because she was an officer and he was enlisted; being caught in a relationship together could have serious consequences for both of their careers if they are caught. I enjoyed watching their relationship progress at a realistic pace, their attraction was undeniable and when they were together their chemistry amazing.

With their chosen careers comes extreme danger, when Devon flies out on a rescue, her helicopter and crew are shot down and set up as bait by the local warlord it becomes a gripping journey to evade the villains and return everyone injured to safety. What they didn’t know was the retaliation has become personal and is specifically aimed at Cam and Devon as a form of payback for the death of a family member.

The research Ms Cross puts into her books is perfectly detailed and realistic, the information she provides of the characters and locations is vivid in their descriptions as are the terrorist groups and the reasoning behind their plight.

I loved this story from the beginning to end; it is a gripping, heart-racing, action-packed read that I devoured in a short period of time. Ms Cross certainly knows how to deliver the perfect Romantic Suspense.

Deadly Descent has solid characterization, I was completely engrossed in each of the main characters and had a pretty good glimpse of the secondary characters, especially Ryan and Candace who I hope will have their own story next.

Ms Cross’s writing style is crisp and engaging, she is emphatic in her story-telling which I thoroughly enjoy.

All in all, a fantastic suspense with an exciting plot, great tension and a wonderful romance that didn’t take over from the main story.

I can’t wait for the next installment in the Bagram Special Ops series.

Devon Crawford is a Black Hawk helicopter pilot and an officer. Cam Munro is a Pararescueman and enlisted. For their forbidden romance to blossom, they must overcome the ghosts and guilts of the past as well as a very present threat that endangers both of them.

Grey’s Anatomy meets Black Hawk Down. Except this doesn’t have the heartbreaking, soul-wrenching grittiness of the military docudrama, but makes up for it by having all of these adults hooking up with co-workers, supervisors, superiors just like the medical soap opera. I think that is my biggest problem. This story has this façade of gritty reality but unless the Uniform Code of Military Justice has significantly changed in the last decade or so, fraternization is not taken so lightly. Yet here, it seems like it is just a minor obstacle to wuv, twue wuv.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the idea of forbidden romance and that’s definitely a good button, especially when it’s the heroine in the officer position and the hero in the enlisted slot. I was ready to love this book, however, one thing immediately got in the way of that. The incredibly unsympathetic characters.

I didn’t like Devon, but to be fair, I didn’t like any of these characters. Where I was expecting a strong female character with brass balls because she has had to fight for her career, instead I see a whiny, wishy-washy, ‘one of the guys’ who is not ‘beautiful’ but all the guys want her anyway (aka MARYSUE). Also, the unnecessary angst from her previous relationship, which just happened to be with another enlisted Pararescueman, suddenly made the ‘forbidden’ angle of the officer/enlisted hookup come across as she’s just a ‘PJ groupie’ who does not value her career instead of a ‘love knows no boundaries’ story.

Cam, the hero, is not much better. He basically bulldozes the heroine before she’s ready to move forward in the relationship but that’s ok because he ‘serious’ about her. We know this because we are told not shown that he is ready to fully commit to a long term relationship with her.

The action sequences, especially the helo crash, were superbly written and the second half of the book was much tighter, but to be honest it came a little too late for me to really care. I just wish that these uninspiring characters (including the ‘villain’ - did not care for his POV, at all) had deserved it.

Overall, great military action story populated by annoying characters that belong in a soap opera, not a romantic action thriller.

A great start to Kaylea Cross' newest military romantic suspense series! I read her other military romantic suspense series and absolutely loved them, in fact they were probably my first introduction to "actual" military romantic suspense. She definitely submerses you into the world/lifestyle and has you sitting on the edge of your seat when her characters are in the thick of things!

My only "beef" would be what others' have mentioned...it was a little lighter on the romance than i typically like, and i think even more so than her other books, if i'm remembering correctly. Ok, it wasn't really the romance itself...i liked the sweet moments between Cam and Dev, and there were quite a few of them...what there wasn't enough of was any "physically romantic" interaction between those two! It wasn't until like 94% that they FINALLY come together...i'm all for a good build-up and characters not falling into the sack right away in a book but it's a little bit of a let-down when it takes them 'till the book is pretty much done. In the end, it would have been nice to have more of those two after they finally get to be together.

All in all though, still a really enjoyable read and i can't wait for the rest of the books!! If you are a fan of military romantic suspense books (for sure heavier on the military end when compared to plain old romantic suspense), give these a shot! Her books are fast paced, gripping and emotional. Some of them might be a little bit lighter on the romance side of things, but there's definitely enough to keep this romance lover satisfied and coming back for more! :)

First of all, huge thumbs up to the author for starting this series. It's about time there was a "military women serving in Afghanistan" series. All the women introduced in this book are tough chicks. The heroine of this one, Devon, is an Army Medivac Helipcopter pilot. Wanna know how tough she is? She continues shooting at the enemy after her helo is shot down despite her completely busted knee.

Her love interest is a PJ, an Air Force parajumper with medical training. I didn't know about this group of elite soldiers till now and this author obviously knows her stuff, right down to the planes and medical jargon. I am impressed.

Devon and Cam are technically not supposed to be together and on top of that, her dead ex boyfriend was his best friend so there's some guilt to get past as well as rules to break if they get together. When Cam has to rescue her tho... They just may realize they can't live without each other assuming they BOTH get out alive. Cause, this crazy Arab, Sadiq, happens to want them dead and he is out there..

Great book but had a real slow start. Didn't get hopping till 50 percent in. The first half got really bogged down showing readers the chemistry btw Devon and Cam. I got it. He gets a hard on everytime he looks at her and she wants his bod super bad.. I got it the first three times it was mentioned and didn't need it beaten in my head. Thus, it doesn't hit the 5 star mark tho the last half was exciting as all get out and oh, thumbs up for condom usage. I didn't think this was a dumb heroine looking to throw away her career so awesome, that.

Even though the story started a little too slow to my liking this is another great story by Kaylea Cross.

This book is the first of a series that takes place in Bagram, a US military Afghan base. I really liked Devon, our heroine. She's a Black Hawk pilot and her job is to fly medical evacuations. I loved Cam. He's a pararescueman. If I understood well, he's a kind of special ops with field medic training.

These two fell for each other, but the problem is that Devon is an officer and Cam just enlisted and because of military rules they can't fraternize. Also, Devon is feeling guilty over some events that happen in the very beginning of the book, and because of that she's fighting her feelings even harder.

Even though I understood Devon's position, I found the first part of the book dragging a little. But then, things sped up and I have to say that Kaylea Cross really has the knack to describe military action and the second part was a solid 4 stars.

The helicopter crash and the rescue were vividly told (this is in the blurb). Another thing I really liked about Devon is that as first officer she made sure that her crew and cargo were secured first and foremost but she also was clever enough to let McCall be in charge from there.

I also really liked Ryan and Jackson but I'm not sure about the other girls, because if I found the guys super yummy the girls were a bit too uppity for me. I'm curious to see how things will turn out in the next books.
