In this steamy novel from New York Times bestselling author Noelle Adams, a notorious tech mogul makes a mild-mannered woman an offer she can’t refuse. What he gets is a battle for control—and a million-dollar affair.
Eric Vincent isn’t in the habit of asking for help. As the founder of a lucrative sports videogame franchise, he’s accustomed to getting his way and enjoying the fruits of his hard-earned success. Then all his illusions of dominance are shattered by a skiing accident that leaves him hobbled, facing a string of surgeries and months of immobility. The only way he’s going to survive is with someone by his side to anticipate his every desire. Someone who will devote every waking second to his comfort. Someone like Julie Nelson . . .
Julie’s life revolves around other people: her students, her parents, her sister. But even she has her limits. Julie has zero interest in playing personal assistant to Eric Vincent, a man who’s as arrogant as he is charismatic . . . until he ups the salary to one million dollars for three months’ work. Soon Julie’s struggling to bite her tongue—and resist the chemistry that draws her to Eric. But after one scorching kiss, Julie decides it’s finally her turn to be selfish. And this time, she’s going to get what she wants.

Noelle handwrote her first romance novel in a spiral-bound notebook when she was twelve, and she hasn't stopped writing since. She has lived in eight different states and currently resides in Virginia, where she teaches English, reads any book she can get her hands on, and offers tribute to a very spoiled cocker spaniel.
She loves travel, art, history, and ice cream. After spending far too many years of her life in graduate school, she has decided to reorient her priorities and focus on writing contemporary romances.
3 Fateful Stars * * * Sometimes, Fate is just a matter of timing for our two main characters. We meet Julie Kent when every moment of her life for the last 6 years has been taking care of her parents. First, she sacrificed completing her college education to be the one relative to take care of her father. After her father's passing... her mother remains ill for months. On the day her mother dies, she meets Eric Vincent in the hospital elevator.
Julie just wants to get away from everything...yet she doesn't have a clue as to what to do. Devoting yourself to others means you have ignored so much, allowed so much to slip by...
Eric Vincent never let's anything slip by. He has lived every moment to its fullest. An ex professional football player now turned successful sports game creator, he has experienced huge success. With this success has come great wealth and power... and the power has corrupted his people skills. Now he is having to deal with a broken leg from a skiing accident. He is miserable; his life is too complicated to have to deal with this... his assistant needs to do the work... not take care of him. All the fussing and prodding has caused 4 nurses to be fired.
These two get stuck in the elevator together. Yes, he is an ass...but at the same time, Julie sees he is in pain with his leg. Julie moves to fix his leg and put it in a position to ease the idiot's pain...thinking nothing of it... doing the action comes naturally. This takes the wind out of Vincent's bluster...no nurse handled him so well... he also seems to be comfortable around her for some reason. Before he knows it, he is demanding her to work for him...throwing out a ridiculous amount of money for a 3 month period.
Julie is stunned...at first. Then she thinks about what is happening in her life...Is this the moment, is this the opportunity to change her life....Julie decides it is...after all it is only for 3 months.
This story presents a number of things... and the romance between these two has all of the complications these types of stories usually have. Overall pleasant.

To say that Julie and Eric have an unconventional first meeting would be an understatement. After nursing both her parents through long term illnesses for the past six years, Julie's just lost her mother and is wondering what to do with her life now. Eric's used to controlling everything in his life so he's having a hard time adjusting to the fact that a broken leg is going to keep him wheelchair bound for the next three months.
When the two get stuck in a hospital elevator and Julie manages to make Eric comfortable without annoying the ever loving crap out of him, he knows he needs to hire her as his personal assistant for the duration of his injury. After some negotiating on Julie's part, she's moved into the spare bedroom of Eric's plush condo and our story's off and running.
Fooling Around is a true 3.5 star read for me and once again I'm left thinking goodreads needs to implement that whole half star rating deal and pronto. Like all of the Noelle Adams books I've read, this one was pleasant enough but not remarkable. I feel like most of her stories fall into the same trap of likeable characters that just can't seem to communicate with one another, thereby bringing on the conflict.
Luckily there was more to this story than what I was initially expecting. Unfortunately there was also less personality and fun as far as the characters and their interactions were concerned. There's a stoicism to this that felt true to life for both characters, but as a reader it left me feeling a little flat.
Overall Fooling Around was a solid read for me, but the lack of personality means I probably wont't be revisiting it anytime soon.

I loved the interaction between Julie and Eric when they met. She treated him as no other woman ever had and it was exactly what he wanted. The fact that she found him totally insufferable never crossed his mind. That thought had me giggling as Julie fought to keep herself composed while he grumbled and grunted his way through each day.
This was a really sweet story as both Julie and Eric slowly learned more about each other and eventually moving into a relationship. Everything between this couple felt real, believable. The steam level was intense once they allowed their chemistry to have free reign but it never overshadows what is at the heart of the story...the growth of each individual character as well as their fall into love.
While this is predominantly low angst, it does have some moments of emotional intensity that had my eyes swelling with tears. This author always seems to do that to me and I’m amazed by it every single time. So glad a reading challenge had me picking up this book!
For me, this book was a take-it-or-leave-it kind of read. I found the chemistry between Eric and Julie to be extremely lacking. And everything else to be kind of... boring, dull, and lacking in emotions. I actually struggled to finish. And to be honest, I don't know why I did. I really felt nothing with these characters.
I don't really have anything else to add... This book just wasn't for me.

Gazillionaire business tycoon, suffering from a broken leg, offers a one million dollar salary for a three month temporary P.A. position to a woman he met in an elevator. He already has a trusted P.A. and countless staff but he desperately needs this complete stranger because she is the only woman on earth who can help him with his broken leg without annoying him. Okay.
Said woman just buried her mom after taking care of her for several years. She also took care of her father until he passed away. Her sister is a self-centered, entitled Karen who hopes to turn her into her own private indentured servant, cleaning up after her kids so she can attend to her busy schedule of Pilates classes and event organizing. Our heroine’s only friend is a nerdy nice guy who has been holding on to unrequited love for several years. Despite her bleak life, she still struggles over whether to take the one million dollar job lol.
Within 2 months of the 3 months “job”, the tycoon and his “speshul” p.a. are in a friends with benefits situation. By day, he berates her and orders her (job duties seem limited to getting him cold water and reading him his business emails). At night, she shed her dowdy brown mouse exterior and shows up in his bedroom with her flamboyant lingerie wardrobe that she has been collecting for several years while in the throes of caring for sick parents in their shabby, dilapidated house, having a nonexistent love life, and trying to make ends meet financially. But no worries as she is a sex goddess in bed and this guy who was a football star then a famous tycoon with tons of women throwing themselves at him never had better sex than with this “speshul” p.a.
There is a subplot about hero’s precocious, wise beyond her years daughter who has an undefined illness that may or may not be terminal. The little girl instantly falls in love with the “speshul” p.a. even telling her that she ought to become her dad’s girlfriend and take care of him after she dies. Wow.
The p.a. eventually leaves her boss cause she is in love with him and doesn’t think it’s appropriate to be on his payroll while she’s banging him. Gee, ya think?
Thankfully he loves her right back and now that his leg cast has been removed and replaced by a boot, he can limp after her to profess his undying love.
I don’t think I’ve read a more contrived, corny, schmaltzy, implausible tale from this author 😒

Julie Nelson just lost her mother, after years of taking care of her parents it looks like she is destined to move in with her sister and family. If someone were to ask her "what do you want?" she wouldn't know, he has always been the person to rely on.
Eric Vincent is sick of being doted on, his leg break is bad enough without those surrounding him in his face all the time. Then he meets Julie who puts him in his place, she is calm and yet exactly what he needs right now, an assistant who wont cower to him. Hiring Julie while he recovers is a perfect idea, but he doesn't expect to become infatuated with who she really is. Julie doesn't expect to have feelings for Eric either, both act on it but once they act on their attraction can both admit who they truly are?
This was really good. I liked Julie, she is a bit of a doormat but slowly is finding her footing Eric is used to demanding and receiving, Julie just brushes him off. Slow build romance and I appreciated it because you really got insight to their characters. Wonderful story.
I think this is just a case of me not getting on with an author’s writing style more than anything so I am not going to rate the portion of Fooling Around that I read.
She wasn’t a risk taker. She liked to play it safe.
I just struggled to find any connection between Eric and Julie, for me the writing was almost emotionless in its flow, and it just made the whole reading experience a bit dull and lifeless.
Not for me, but if you have read and liked this author previously then I am sure this will be one you enjoy as well.

Former pro-athlete turned video game mogul Eric Vincent likes to be in control, something that will present a problem for the next few months. After breaking his leg in a skiing accident, he’s left immobile and in need of help from getting around to scratching and adjusting his leg. He’s fired a string nurses who’ve only managed to drive him crazy. But after being trapped in a hospital elevator with a very intuitive and proactive yet subdued stranger, he takes extreme measures to hire her.
Julie Nelson spent the past six years sacrificing her life in order to take care of her dying parents. Now that they’re both gone she’s not sure what’s next for her. She is certain of two things. One, she doesn’t want to be the live-in nanny to her four nieces and nephews. And two, she’s not about to play nurse to the short tempered Eric. That is until he offers her one million dollars to help him for the next three months. How hard can it be?
As it turns out, he’s more compelling than he is arrogant and the attraction between them isn’t something Julie was prepared for. Can they ignore the pull and desire between them being in constant proximity?
I liked the premise for this story and even though it felt flat at times and it started out at a measure pace, the character development was good. Both characters are likeable in their own right. Eric is a grouchy, gets what he wants man. He’s also smart, caring when he wants to be, with a secret and a deeply buried vulnerability the Julie can sense upon meeting him and confirms as she gets to know him.
It took a while for me to like Julie though. She seemed like an unassuming, doormat for everyone from Eric to her sister who was good settling for a life less ordinary. But I liked that she started to build back her confidence while being around Eric.
The attraction between the characters is a slow build up that leads to very steamy sexy times that round out a pleasant read.
Fooling Around is a standalone contemporary romance by Noelle Adams. It’s told from both points of view. With a happy ending.
* I was given an ARC of this book courtesy of the author via NetGalley. The excerpts are from that copy. *
I want to start off by saying I really like Noelle Adams are an author and her books. But this one just didn't do it for me.
It's written okay but I think the storyline was not to my liking and a little unbelievable.
Julie, mother has died after six years of illness. She meets Eric who has had a injury to his leg and needs nursing. He offers Julie a large sum of money to be his nurse, they meet in an elevator, and she accepts.
The two main characters I found lacking. The story line just didn't do it for me either, as I stated just a little to way out there. And Eric, he never really sold me. I found this one difficult to finish.
If someone offered me a million dollars for three months of caregiving, I would absolutely take it but I don’t know that I would have lasted the full three months when the patient in question is a guy like Eric. He was such an absolute jerk and for no reason! Would it kill him to be kinder to his employees? A person’s true character shows in the way they treat the people under them or in the hospitality industry and he failed on all counts. Just because he pays them well doesn’t negate the way he talks to them. Therefore, I had a hard time rooting for a romance with Julie.
Julie was a doormat who not only took Eric’s verbal abuse but let her sister get away with her selfishness for far too long. I wish she had to stood up for herself with her sister much sooner and called out Marie for not helping with their parents more. I also didn’t like the way she ultimately handled things with Eric.
I may not have been on board with Eric but I still read this quickly and I even cried, as I often do with this author’s romances, so that’s something.

This was an OK story
This was a fairly decent story of Eric Vincent, a pro-athlete turned video game mogul who had an accident and is laid up and needs help and hires Julie Nelson for one million dollars for three months. Julie has basically been taking care of her parents for years and recently lost her mother.
I thought Eric's character was pretty good if a bit on the cranky side, but I think one of my problems with this story was Julie's character. She was really just a doormat. I'm all for the timid, shy heroine, but there needs to be a little backbone otherwise why would a rich, sexy billionaire want her? Also, I'm not really sure they wanted each other at all. The chemistry between the two of them wasn't really that great. Finally, the story dragged on in a few places and it really was a bit hard to focus my attention on finishing this book. I've read one book previously by this author and I also gave that one three stars because that book also was a bit on the boring side. I think if the author picked up the pace of the book a little bit her stories would be better received.
Fooling Around by Noelle Adams was a refreshing read. Even if there were many chliches within the story, the plot still worked out. It was my first book by this author and I enjoyed it very much. Especially after reading several books that did not hit my personal charts this book came like a light in the dark.
The writing was flawless and fluent – no complains here. And the author developed interesting characters –
Where Julie first appears bleak and weak – she turned out to be strong and when the first impression of Eric is that of an arrogant son of a B**** later the reader will learn that in fact he is loving and caring. The only downer was that I felt the issues around Erics daughter were not solved to my satisfaction.
I found that it somehow lacked that extra something to take it to the next level. It's still a nice story, but not more than a three star rating from here.
Fooling Around is about a girl who sacrifices so much of herself to take care of her sick parents for six years. She finds herself at the hospital, mom just passed and her dad already gone, she is at a loss as to what to do next. In comes Eric, arrogant, grumpy and temporarily wheelchair bound due to a skiing accident. He's not handling the confinement so well with all the hovering of his nurse and PA when he gets stuck in an elevator with Julie. In just the short minutes they are stuck, she has managed to handle his moods and comfort so well that he has his PA hunt her down to offer her a job as his caretaker until he's back on his feet. With the money Eric offers her, she can't refuse.
This is where the story gets a bit predictable. He falls in love with the unassuming girl he never would have looked twice at and she falls hard to tame his arrogance and brings happiness to his life he didn't realize he was missing. Throw in a daughter who may have a terminal illness and you get a sweet, slightly emotional story that warms your heart. This was a low angst, sweet romance book.
Predictable. Characters were a bit immature for their 30's. Overall, it felt like a book I had read before. The writing isn't bad or anything-it just didn't really light my fire!
I enjoyed this delightful romance! It was tender, sexy and emotional. I must admit that it was also rather predictable, but this didn’t spoil my enjoyment at all!
Eric Vincent is stuck in a wheelchair for the next three months, after a ski accident. A wealthy and successful businessman, he is used to being in control of all things in his life. The physical helplessness of being dependent on others is a torture to him, and he is very vocal about it!
When he meets Julie Nelson in a hospital, he instantly realizes she could help him and makes her an offer of employment she can’t refuse. A very practical girl and in need of money, Julie accepts his offer, despite her doubts on her ability to put up with Eric’s rude attitude and difficult character.
What follows is a journey of self-discovery for two persons who seem perfect for each other. Neither of them is an emotional risk taker and both are hiding their true feelings and vulnerability. Eric appears arrogant and selfish, Julie seems calm and withdrawn. But they have so much in common. Are they strong enough to change their view on life for a chance at happiness together?
I love reading Noelle Adams stories, and this one was no exception. If you are looking for a sweet and emotional romance, this book is perfect for you.

I really enjoyed the character of Eric Vincent, he fits the mold of successful and good-looking yet an apparent bad tempered asshole. The character of Julie Nelson started out as intriguing, but as the chapters progressed, she started to become like a broken record and insipid. Having said that, the story was enjoyable, the sex scenes were good and didn't take up too much of the plot and the story had a satisfying ending with no cliffhanger.

3.5 stars---FOOLING AROUND by Noelle Adams is a stand alone, contemporary adult, romance story line focusing on former pro-football player/turned video game entrepreneur Eric Vincent, and Julie Nelson-a woman who has sacrificed her post graduate studies to spend the last several years looking after her ailing parents.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Eric and Julie) FOOLING AROUND focuses on the building relationship between Eric and Julie, one that began in a stalled elevator following the death of Julie’s mother. Eric has been immobilized by a skiing accident that has left our hero dependent upon others to get around, and Julie is ripe for the picking. Attracted to Julie’s compassion and her take no sh*t attitude from Eric, Eric makes Julie an offer she cannot refuse-One Million dollars for three months in his employ. What ensues are Julie’s attempts to break through Eric’s rough and angry exterior; and Eric’s struggle to keep professional his relationship with Julie.
FOOLING AROUND looks at one woman’s struggle to step out of her comfort zone; and one man’s battle with his lack of independence and his inability to fix what is wrong. The world building focuses on recovery, acceptance, and letting go of preconceived notions. Eric is an angry, independent, arrogant, alpha male who fights Julie every step of his recovery; Julie is a woman who knows what she wants but Eric is unwilling to go along.
The relationship between Julie and Eric is slow to develop with an expiry date of three months. There is the initial attraction but that soon gives way to our hero’s hot temper, and lack of patience with the people in his life including the woman with whom he is falling in love. Eric has struggled throughout most of his life to prove himself worthy of family and love, and in this, our hero is facing another battle alongside someone he loves. The limited number of $ex scenes are intimate and steamy but I felt the sexual heat is lacking. I did not ‘feel’ the chemistry and desire between our leading couple-Eric’s hot and cold attitude did nothing to energize the situation. Eric’s attempts to push Julie away are met with Julie’s immediate withdrawal and embattled self esteem.
There are a number of secondary and supporting characters including Eric’s household staff-Tim (Eric’s driver) and Kristin (Eric’s PA). We are also introduced to Julie’s sister Marie-a woman whose dependence upon her own sister leaves something to be desired.; and Maddy-a young child struggling with issues of her own.
FOOLING AROUND is an enjoyable read with interesting characters, and a familiar premise. If you like brooding, billionaire alpha men with attitude to spare, then check out FOOLING AROUND by Noelle Adams.

This was a lighthearted contemporary romance that had me so engrossed that I hadn't even realized I finished the book until the very last page. Eric and Julie come from very different places and I think that is one of the things I liked most about this couple, they were able to take their prior experiences and bring that to the table so that they balanced one another out. This book had some angst but nothing major (no tears were shed) and it was quickly resolved which worked well for the lightness of the read.
This was the first book I have read by Noelle Adams, I really enjoyed her style of writing and I look forward to reading more of her work.
***I have received this book from Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept. through netgalley in exchange for my honest review*** https://www.netgalley.com/
As if Julie's day could get any worse, her mother has just died, her sister leaves all of the arrangements up to her, the hospital elevator gets stuck and the injured man in the elevator with her is extremely arrogant and insisting that she needs to demand that security move faster to get them out of the elevator. But apparently she made a good impression on the arrogant billionaire since he offered her a job as his assistant while he continues to recover. Julie didn't even realize she was looking for a job but sees the money as a chance to change her life to something of her own.
This was a fun romance from author Noelle Adams that centered on the arrogant and often cranky billionaire Eric and his quiet unassuming assistant, Julie. The romance was predictable but enjoyable none the less. Although I do wish there was more of a resolution where Maddie was concerned.
I loved it! My third book by Noelle Adams and I am really loving her style. The hero in this story definitely has a grumpy attitude problem, but I loved watching him fall in love. I loved watching the heroine break out of her shell and accomplish her dreams. Very cute and quick-read love story.
Another new book I have discovered by Noelle Adams. I loved Eric and Julie. Eric is a very generous man. He has held his feelings in, mostly because he was so afraid of being hurt. Julie really doesn't know what she wants to do with her life since her parents past away. She had devoted herself to looking after them for the last few years. Her and Eric meet and Eric takes an instant liking to her and he offers her a job. At first she says no but the more she thinks about she decides to take him up on the offer. This is where their story begins. I love their story and their journey to happily ever after. I highly recommend this book.
2021 - Trying to clear out my Netgalley to-read list. Here's to taking it back to 2016.
Reading Fooling Around took me back to why I used to love lighter romances like this. The angst isn't all consuming, the characters develop quite quickly, it's an easy read, and it ends with a guaranteed HEA. I haven't read something with a Happily Ever After in some time. While it was a quick, enjoyable read, it had some glaring issues. There's a daughter with a mysterious illness that feels just tossed in, the whole book is predictable, and well, per usual it's completely over the top in that it would never happen. I guess I sort of like that though, just wish it felt more realistic. The romance could have used more fleshing out, I think I would have loved it had it not had the child illness situation and more romance focus had been given. Overall, not a bad romance, I think this was a fantastic break from real life and that others will really enjoy it.
Julie Nelson had come from a humble background. A father and mother that truly loved her and her sister but only gave what they could afford. Never any false dreams or promises her. Mom was a no nonsense woman. Her dad was more the romantic dreamer if you had to pick one. But the joy and laughter was there. Her father would take the family camping at least until their teen years and her sister Marie became too big for her own britches. So would hear stories of some of her friends staying in fancy hotels and going to fancy places. She remembers her parents coming up with some sayings about being grateful but after that the trips started falling away. While she was off at college for her PhD in History six years ago her mom had suffered several strokes where it caused partial paralysis and speech problems. Yet, when her dad ended up with pancreatic cancer six months later they could not manage. Now six years have passed and eight months ago Julie’s father passed away just a week ago her mom suffered another massive stroke leaving her in a coma with DNR orders. So, she had to sit and watch her mother slowly die like her father. On the day she passes she was leaving the hospital and gets stuck in the elevator with an alpha male from hell. Well, maybe not that bad but rude anyway. Rich and always used to getting his way even to the point of being a bully. Yet, it could be he had a cast from thigh to ankle. Anyway after they were rescued from the elevator she gets a call from said man Eric Vincent but she doesn’t recognize the name because they never exchanged names. She ask what he wants. He says he wants to hire her for 3 months to be his aide/assistant. Since she was so good at it on the elevator. She had to think back to remember. He tells her, the repositioning of his foot on the wheelchair and giving him a bottled water from her purse without him even asking or skipping a beat. She says no that her mom had just died that day and they would be having her funeral in the next day or so when he said he would pay her one hundred thousand dollars. When she said no again a few more times he ended up at one million dollars for three months of working with him. She was about to say no again but he said think about it he would call back on Friday and then hung up before she could say no. By the end of the funeral and her over dramatic sister taking all the glory for caring for her mother when she hardly did a thing. Or even visited her. Then when she started planning her life that was the last straw. She had enough she was taking the job with Eric. She needed her life back. That is if Eric didn’t make her bite off her tongue with all his pompous remarks or him barking at her. Could she really work with this sexier than hell man? The man who was rude, loud, and mean? Or would she end up quitting after the first day? I enjoyed this story. It surprised me with some heartwarming scenes inside of the fluff. I give it 4 stars. Provided by netgalley.com. I liked this book; full stop.
I've read a lot of Noelle Adams. I like her as an author. She has a way of packing an emotional punch into everything (see Bittersweet). This time, the emotional intensity just wasn't quite there for me. I liked Julie and Eric. Both had good character arcs. Julie initially feels like a bit of a doormat but she quickly disabuses both Eric and the reader of that idea. She is sweet and very giving but she does have her limits and she defends her boundaries. Eric is the ex pro athlete who has been so pushed to always be the best he just can't stop fighting and just breathe. He is such a control freak that Julie has to challenge him on it.
This book is a slow smouldering burn; or rather it would be if I had felt the chemistry between them better. I can see easily how the emotions get involved for both of them. Eric can't control Julie and it is a huge turn on for him. Julie is challenged by Eric to move out of her staid and steady life and she takes up the challenge. Emotionally they click and are very good for each other. But the lack of emotional intensity also dampens the sexual chemistry and I struggled to feel that.
When I did feel emotion, it tended to center around Maddy, a very special character and catalyst in the book. Her actions, reactions, and the love surrounding her were palpable. I really think it was a case of too much tell and not enough show because it's obvious in the writing that Maddy is very loved and those who love her *show* it.
I liked the grand gesture because it is a clear indicator that a grand gesture does not need to be some over the top insanity. It was simple, emotional, and very special (and completely free!). It was one of the rare emotional highs the story gave me.
This is a good book, an enjoyable read. It lacks the extra oomph to take it to the next level, but still provides a compelling story with special moments.
While I enjoyed Fooling Around I don't feel as if I have a lot to say about it. The unusual start crossing the paths of two very different people in a hospital following the death of Julie's mother isn't something you see very often. Then again you could say fate works in mysterious ways lol.
Told in third person narrative with alternating focus between Julie and Eric. Eric is quick to realise that Julie's presence is like a balm to his arrogant, hot-tempered ways; laid up for 3 months in a cast on his leg, Eric requires care without fuss. Certain Julie is the only one capable of fulfilling his requirements he throws money at her until she agrees.
The complete opposite of Eric in her demeanour, Julie has selflessly devoted the past six years to caring for her parents until their deaths. Although she has lost herself in the process, only holding on to daydreams she doesn't believe she can make into reality. Julie is also a little blind in seeing herself clearly, not only is she caring and compassionate she tends to downplay her beauty by fading into the background.
The attraction between Julie and Eric sizzles although neither of them are willing to admit to the depth of emotion they feel, believing neither can provide the relationship the other deserves or wants. Being privy to their inner thoughts and how simple communication would have paved the way to a deep connection between the pair was frustrating at times.
The best thing for me was witnessing Julie's character growth with her belief in herself making her daydreams into reality. Eric's crumbling emotional barriers were also a perk. There are a number of other plot developments, while quite pivotal didn't really play a part in the story in my mind.
Fooling Around shows how opposites can not only attract but can balance each other perfectly.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Like my previous review for After We Fall, I picked this one up over the weekend because I wanted a good romance read for Valentine's Day! And that's exactly what I got. This was a pretty quick read and it kept me hooked the whole time. Julie has taken care of her sick parents for years and hasn't done much for herself because of that. She even left school just before she finished her PhD. Meanwhile, Eric has been building his career for as long as he remembers. Unfortunately, a skiing accident has put him out of commission for a while, and he's not happy about it. With a very large salary, he convinces Julie to come work for him for 3 months.
This story was pretty cute and unique. Not entirely realistic because not many people will pay someone else $1 million for 3 months....but still, a cute story. Eric certainly didn't make things easy for Julie, but she doesn't back down and that's what I like about her. I also really liked that she wasn't all about the money when it really came down to it. I can't say too much without giving everything away, but it was a fun story. I enjoyed reading it and I'm interested in seeing what else Adams has to offer.
Noelle Adams writes such nice (and by 'nice' I mean "I-wish-I-had-one-just-like-this-dreamy-hunk-of-ridiculous-hawwtness") guys -- even if they do start out a bit curmudgeonly ;)
Eric quickly grows enamored with Julie's ability to keep him on his toes; she's his breath of fresh air. He grows less growly and even begins to gently tease her (cue cute scene sighs aww!) and you start to succumb to his charm right alongside Julie.
I like that Julie was an average woman, catching the eye of the billionaire: it's official, I'm a sucker for a Cinderella story. I was disgusted with members of Julie's family (I'm pretty sure we have the same sister. True story). I loved the tender moments. I love the turning point. I winced at that moment when Conflict arises and you know things are going to get ugly before they get better (Ouch, Julie, just ouch, girl!) And the ending? SWOON.
I like my romances to be hearttugging & heartwarming reads and Fooling Around was perfect - absolutely perfect. Definitely making it into my Top 20 for 2016.
***I happily nabbed a free ARC via Netgalley of Fooling Around in return for my honest review***
This one never quite got off the ground for me. It had appealing moments, but there were also a lot of parts that I wasn't able to really engage with. I didn't particularly like their meeting. I get the whole enemies to lovers idea, but I was not convinced there was anything in the initial meeting between Eric and Julie that would convince either of them to want anything to do with the other.
This was a stumbling block I was never able to get completely over and it colored my impression of the characters and their actions.
The writing was good, the pacing was as well. I think, if I had liked the beginning better, this would have been a higher rating for me, as once it got going, I did like where it ended up. I liked the plot with his daughter, the idea that Eric needed Julie even more than he wanted to admit. It was fun to watch him try to convince himself that he only wanted her because she was a good assistant.
I recommend this book, overall, as it is very possible it was just my mood, or my opinion, that made the opening of this not work very well...I am guessing it will be fine for a lot of other readers.
