Second Circle Tattoos #1

The Strongest Steel

"I know what you're up to," she said.
"And what would that be?" he asked with a devious smirk.
"You know."
"Is it working?"
She looked over her shoulder to where he was still reclining against the wall, watching her patiently. All the reasons she'd vowed to stay alone, to remain uninvolved, fled as he grinned at her.
"Maybe."

Harper Connelly never expected to find herself outside of a tattoo parlor at one in the morning. The scars that decorate her back are just one more reminder of things she'd rather forget, the past she wants to leave far behind her, but before she can move on she needs him.

Trent Andrews has his own reasons for specializing in inking over scars. And there's no way in hell he's going to turn Harper away. Not when a swirling mix of tenderness and desire slams into him every time her sees her. Being with Harper is like going 10 rounds in the ring-exhilarating, powerful, and dangerous. She stirs feeling in him he thought were long gone... if he can only get past her carefully constructed defenses.

Running was the only thing that saved Harper last time, but each session at Second Circle Tattoos brings her closer and closer to Trent. His lingering touches seduce her, making her believe in a life without fear, where she can be happy, whole, in love. But when cryptic messages start appearing on Harper's phone, strange deliveries arrive at her door, and Second Circle is vandalized, Harper is convinced that her ex-boyfriend has tracked her down, and worse, that he knows about Trent. She ran from her past once before, this time will she have the strength to fight back?

Four-time RITA finalist, Scarlett Cole, is a contemporary romantic suspense / contemporary romance author (represented by Louise Fury at The Bent Agency) who calls both Toronto, Canada and Manchester, England home. A born city dweller, she periodically quashes the urge to live in the country by hiking up a mountain to remind herself that living away from people would terrify the pants off her.

She believes everybody deserves their love story to be told and loves her heroes on the rough and rugged side…and usually tall (because she married one of those 6ft 6” men you read about in romance!). She’s an A-type personality and Scorpio star sign, so good luck getting her to do anything she doesn’t want to.

DNF @28%, no rating.

Like he was a teenage girl or something, he’d gone to bed without brushing his teeth so he could continue to appreciate her sweet flavor, wondering how the rest of her would taste.

I've decided to throw in the towel when I read this quote. It's not sexy at all. It's not sweet either. Fact is, it's more along the line of…ewwwwwww.

I thought the story had potential but failed to deliver. It was way too sugary-sweet for my liking and I felt compelled to call the endearment police because the heroine was the hero's sweetheart right off the bat. Plus, the story throws around odd NA vibes left and right and you should buy a lifejacket to survive all the waterworks. I also felt somewhat let down by the allegedly hot, tattooed male lead whom I expected to be a badass hero. Unfortunately, he was just a sweet pussycat. Boring. I'm sorry but The Strongest Steel wasn't my cup of tea.

Pre-reading The Strongest Steel

I haven't even checked the publication date of this book before I requested it on NetGalley. Geez. *blushes* It's been published last year, July 7th 2015. Oh well, they approved my request, so I'm reading it nonetheless.

So I just finished this novel. And I haven't had the urge to write a review immediately after reading in quite some time. Best Debut Goodreads Author? In that category I saw this novel and then it all went up-hill from there! Scarlett Cole where have you been hiding?! This quite the DEBUT novel and now I know why it was nominated. I'm calling it now .. this series is going to be one that you'll regret not checking out. Seriously UNDERRATED. The writing structure was superb and was the perfect length (NOT OPPOSED TO A NOVELLA). The characters were well thought out and the only thing that comes to mind is I have lived a thousand lives. I can honestly say I usually just read novels but this is that kind where I lived through it. As for the plot .. it was constructed quite nicely. I already have the second book shelved and am counting down the days to devour it!!

“You ready to show me how amazing you are at this?”

“Always,” he said, grinning at her. “One amazing, bad-ass tattoo coming right up.”

Tattooed hero fans!! Check this out!!

This is a story about Harper, a girl who'd survived an attack that left her back covered in scars -- a constant reminder of a night she wished she could forget. As a way of trying to put the past behind her, she decided to enlist the help of a talented tattoo artist named Trent whose specialty was inking over scars to design to create a large tattoo that turned her back into something beautiful. Even though Trent was immediately drawn to her, once he saw the depth of her pain, he was determined to help her through whatever it was she needed to do or go through to heal, no matter what. And with each tattooing session, they grew closer until their feelings for each other could no longer be denied...

Ok ladies, Trent is seriously guaranteed to melt your heart into a puddle of goo!! This sexy tattoo artist was the most kind, gentle and caring guy you would imaging. He was patient, understanding, and did an amazing job at always putting Harper at ease. Not only that but he was funny, charming, oh-so swoony and once he knew Harper trusted him, he unleashed pure sexiness!

Harper was a very strong heroine. Having survived a truly horrific ordeal, she naturally had a lot of (quite reasonable) fears. But she was also determined to keep living her life and her decision to get the tattoo was the first step towards finally putting the past behind her and taking back the control that had been stolen from her. Under Trent's TLC and love, she definitely came a long way.

I loved that while both Trent and Harper had flaws and made mistakes, they were also both able to be aware of those mistakes after a reasonable amount of time and apologize for them. Everyone makes mistakes, but its the characters that can learn from their mistakes that I respect the most.
“Fuck.” Trent growled and pulled her into his chest… His eyes were steely. Focused. “We’re in this together. We can keep you safe. I don’t want us to have secrets, darlin’. I want to know more. Everything."

The whole build up of their relationship as they designed the tattoo and in the various tattooing sessions definitely had my heart fluttering. I loved watching their feelings for each other grow. I loved the way Trent both respected her, helped her, and loved her, while supporting her, and encouraging her to move forward with her life. Trust me, he'll have you swooning in no time!
“I don’t want to move.”
“So don’t.” He pressed a soft kiss into her hair.
“No one has hugged me in a very long time,” she said… “Thank you.”
“Any time. Tattoos and hugs. I’m great at them both. Just don’t tell the guys out there or I’ll never hear the end of it.”

We were told the story in alternating POVs, but in third person. I found it very easy to read and smooth flowing. This story is also quite steamy. I'd put it somewhere between NA and Adult in terms of steam levels, and there's a very nice build up to the sexytimes so you so really feel like the characters naturally got to that point -- no insta love, even though they had an instant connection.

Now, maybe it's because I've just literally read so much contemporary romance, but the complete truth is that I did find this book very predictable and in many ways almost an unsurprising story in terms of plot. BUT the reason I still loved it so much was two fold: First, it was -- to put it simply -- very, very well done. Second, sometimes this kind of book is exactly what you need. Maybe a good analogy would be that sometimes, even though mac & cheese isn't exactly a unique culinary experience, sometimes you just crave good old, delicious, mouthwatering mac & cheese. So for anyone looking for a really freaking good, deliciously swoony, non-frustrating, sexy, fun, romance with a dash of suspense all mixed together with a generous helping of protective, heart-melting, and tattooed Alpha male, THIS IS IT. This is the mac & cheese of contemporary romance (and I mean that in a really good way because I adore mac & cheese).

This is the first standalone in a series of standalones. This has a complete story and Trent and Harper's romance is completely wrapped up by the end (with an epilogue). The next book is a different couple.

Rating: 4+ stars!! NA/Adult Contemporary Romance Standalone

This story was amazing! Scarlett Cole came into the author world and kicked some ass with this novel, and I am extremely grateful that I got to read it.

Harper Connelly has been hiding for four years. Hiding from her ex, from her past, and hiding the scars she bears. Finally working up the courage to do something about the scars, she goes to Second Circle to get them tattooed over. Which brings her to Trent Andrews. Trent is an up and coming tattoo artist who is instantly intrigued by the shy, nervous, woman who walks into his studio. Once he hears her story he will stop at nothing to help her overcome her fears.

I loved Trent so much! He was so patient with Harper and helped her through everything she was going through. He didn't just take over her life and let her lean on him for help, instead he showed her the strength she already had in her so that she could move forward on her own and be more confident about herself. The relationship Trent and Harper had was really sweet and loving, and made me a little jealous. Seriously, where can I find a Trent??

The story of their instant connection was very well written and it seemed completely realistic, which insta-love usually doesn't to me. It surprised me how much I liked the fast paced romance they had, but everything going on in the story came together so well that it all just worked and made the overall reading experience enjoyable. There were a few things that I wish were resolved by the end of the story but they didn't stop me from loving on this book.

I am already dying for the next book in the Second Circle Tattoos series and can't wait for everyone else to read this and love it as much as I did. Scarlett Cole, I congratulate you on this amazing debut!

This was my first review ever...
AnD I wanted to re-write it because I didn't give this book the credit it deserved....
So I'm doing it NOW!!!Because I loved this book!

Where to start? Oh yes, I'm practically a haphephobic
who is on the run from a psychotic asshat who tried to kill me.
Great first impression.

This book was great...I really enjoyed it because it was sweet, emotional, funny, awkward and hot! Trent and Harper were 2 amazing characters who both completed each other in the best way...
I loved them and the whole storyline from the beginning and I couldn't get enough...My only concern was that I prefer my books being told in H or h point of view. But other than that everything else was Fabulous!!!

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger, right?"
"You're quoting Kelly Clarkson?"
"No,Nietzsche.Wouldn't have pegged you as a Kelly fan."
"Never. And if you ever mention this conversation,
I'll deny all knowledge of it."

The story is about Trent a tattoo artist who' specialty was to tattoo on bodies with scars! He owns "Second Circle Tattoos" with his friend Cujo and is pretty famous in Miami. Everyone wanted a tattoo from him. He had some issues and insecurities because he was afraid that he wasn't enough for the others and that made him try harder. He was a manwhore along with his friend Cujo. Other than that he was a great guy....ready to sweep you of your feet and make you his Queen!

AnD then was Harper the most scared and shy girl in the planet with the biggest heart. She was smart, funny, kind, cute all wrapped in on tiny person! Before she came to Miami she went though a lot and I MEAN A LOT from her ex boyfriend and that changed her life and made her afraid of her own shadow...Then she goes looking for Trent...AnD the sweetest story begins....:)))

Harper had many issues and fears but that makes her who she is and Trent saw the sweet girl who was hiding under the huge clothes, trying to cover herself and the scars that reminded her how cruel people can be...They found in each other the pieces that were missing from their lives.... He was so damn patient and sweet with her since the beginning. He did everything in her pace and never pushed her for more, and waited for her to be ready to open up. During the tattoo sessions which were painful Trent checked every detail with her to make sure she approved. They were just amazing together. The author made them click in all the right places...

I loved this story!

Our heroine Harper has gone through something truly horrific, and is ready to try and move on.

Trent is the guy she goes to to help her. And from there grows an attraction and love that is lovely.

Trent was great, and understanding and patient and loving. Harper, I loved her, so strong to have gone through what she did, and trying to move on and get her life back.

Yes, the story was a bit fast paced, maybe a touch of insta love, but it sort of worked. It was intimate and broke down barriers very quickly, given how they met and what she wanted Trent to do.

All in a lovely story.

However, I did have certain issues with some things. I WANTED some resolution to what happened with her brother. And occasionally, certain things were skipped, and then mentioned later, AS IF I should have read about it, but it was missing. For example, after her first tattoo session, later it is mentioned she contacted him all night, for help and reassurance, but this is just mentioned as an aside later on. And I felt like it should have been included, it was at an important stage in building up their relationship and connection and just felt like it should have been included. And there were a few times I felt this.

But a great 4 star and I am excited to see what else this author can do.

Good but unremarkable. Straight laced girl with a painful past meets tattooed guy who is nicer than he looks. Her past catches up to them, there's some relationship drama, and then HEA. The best friends were kind of one-note characters thrown in there to set up the next installment. The audiobook narrator is kind of bad too, which didn't help things. Oh well, on to the next book!

TITLE: The Strongest Steel
AUTHOR: Scarlett Cole
SERIES: Second Circle Tattoos
RELEASE DATE: July 7th 2015
GENRE: Contemporary Romane
FORMAT: Audiobook
NARRATORS: Laurel Wilson
LENGTH: 11 hrs and 46 mins
RATING: 4.5 Stars
CLIFFHANGER: No

I have been wanting to read this one forever. I'm glad I finally had the time - plus it's enrolled in the Romance Package on Audible so I grabbed it. As always in my audiobook reviews I start with the narration, which influences the enjoyment of the story. In that regard I have to say it was subpar. There were weird breaks and the narrator has a weird speaking pattern going down with the voice at the end of a sentence and dragging out the last syllables. Adding to that was a screeching and squealing voice that almost did in my eardrums. I've listened to this narrator under another alias and that wasn't too bad so I figure it was one of her early works.

What drew me to this story was that it is about a hot tattoo artist. And the cover. I mean just look at it. Yeah, I'm shallow like that. Trent Andrews and his Second Circle Tattoos studio are well known among tattoo artists. He specializes in inking over scars which I found intriguing and way cool. When Harper Connelly enters his studio he is instantly attracted to the sweet, shy and sexy woman. Harper wants a tattoo on her back, covering hideous scars she has to thank her ex-boyfriend for, who is incarcerated for what he did to her. The extent of her scars ensure that over the course of the next weeks Trent and Harper get to know each other.

Trent was the most patient, sweetest man with a healthy dose of alpha-ness. Over the next couple of weeks he became Harper's rock. He was there for her, especially after learning her history he wanted nothing more than to protect her and take her pain away. He gave Harper the confidence and the tools to come to terms with her scars. He was just the best.

Harper had gone through hell, and while that left her marked, inside and out, she wanted to get out of the loop that she let her ex-boyfriend's actions define her. With Trent's help and love she found her sass and backbone again. She was cute, feisty sometimes and so so brave. I loved to see her opening up and trusting Trent.

The Strongest Steel was a complete winner, story-wise and character-wise. It has action, suspense, an insta-love that actually works and some steam. I'm definitely continuing with this series and I hope that the other books will be made into audiobooks as well, however, I hope that they'd choose another narrator.

TITLE: The Strongest Steel

MY RATING: 4 stars

The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire.

This has been sitting on my kindle for ages way way back in July so thought I would finally get to reading it!!

Love the cover (which is why I one clicked) and the synopsis can't go wrong with a hot tatted up tattoo artist..

It was like I was getting a history lesson, quotes, tattoo terminology which was really surprising..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

So just like the synopsis says Harper Connelly turns up at the door of Second Circle Tattoo Studio in the early morning timidly seeking out Trent Andrews who is widely known for his craft of tattooing over scars..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

What Trent didn't expect to see when he set eyes on the beautiful Harper was the devastation of knife wounds carved on her back..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Thirty-two stitches. A broken jaw. A broken nose. A fractured cheekbone. The list went on.

It was someone I’d been with for two years. My brother’s best friend.

The need to move on, And the need to hide.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Someone had carved words into Harper's back. Someone had deliberately taken a knife to her skin, there in the scars where the words "MY BITCH."

"You know guys love a hot chick with a bad-ass tattoo right?" he said.

This could've come across like a dark read with what Harper had endured at the hands of her then boyfriend, in the beginning she ran, but then she met Trent who stood beside her and day by day gave her back her confidence and in the end she did fight back..A real enjoyable story of trust, letting go, and new beginnings..

Trent is a 32 yr old tattoo artist who owns tattoo parlor Second Circle. Harper is running from an ex who severely traumatized her and later her family. She's been in Miami for 4 years now and is barely existing. Taylor has heard of Trent and knows he has a specialty of tattooing over scar tissue which leads to their initial meeting.

Trent is one of the better MC's I've read in awhile. He was old enough to be more mature and knew what he wanted out of life. I loved the way Trent handles Harper's fear. She has a lot of reason for that fear and he's the first person in four years that has tried to help her overcome it. You can't help but fall for Trent with the way he heals her.

There was no constant pushing away that can get to be too much in a story. There were the times Harper was scared but due to the trauma she suffered, I felt it was only natural to the story. This story was focused on Harper and Trent and overcoming Harper's traumatic past. The only problem is Harper's ex isn't done with her, but now she has Trent to help her overcome.

Great story! I really enjoyed it and love that the series continues with a focus on the other characters of the Second Circle Tattoo parlor.

What makes a book a great work for us, readers, and also what makes it stay as great for generations to come is the transfer of emotion it delivers.

Usually, while trying to express why a book is amazing, we point to awesome characters, or the intriguing plot, or the epic prose.

All these things are of course crucial parts of how a book delivers its effect; however, we must never forget that the overall experience and how a book makes us feel is the most important thing that makes it memorable.

Good books can make us laugh out loud or cry our eyes out, they can make us swoon, smile and feel content, cry with joy etc or they can make us suffer, curl up in fear or despair or bite our nails with anxiety. They can provide relief, deliver hope, or a deep satisfaction.

Books help us feel a great many kinds of emotions as we experience the lives of those fictional characters through the medium of story.

A book is as good as it can achieve the transfer of emotions. A terrific story with amazing characters in an absorbing world needs a prose that does exactly what is necessary without getting in the way. When all of it comes together, if it delivers the emotional transfer I have mentioned above and makes us feel what the characters feel, then, it means the writer has managed to create a great book.

*********************************************

Why am I telling you all about this?

Well, because I read a book about a woman who was violently abused by her ex.

She was beaten badly, her nose, jaw and ribs were broken and while she was tied to a bed face down, the bastard carved “my bitch” on her back with his knife.

She is now trying to set up a new life for herself and when she finally finds a new love, she needs to learn to trust again.

I should feel a lot reading this book, right?

Yeah… but no, sadly, I didn’t feel a thing.

And that’s why I am writing all about this…

Maybe, I am writing it to all the writers who would stop and read my review.

*********************************************

About this book...

Well, I am sad that the writing of this book didn't make me feel emotionally invested in the story or characters. I am sad that a potentially good story is wasted and the way it was written made me feel distanced from the characters and their story.

First of all, it is told in the third person point of view and this style is a challenging one because it is the one where a writer has the most difficulty in emotional transfer. In this book, the writer fails to transfer the emotions. The whole time I was reading it, I was neutral, never being able to connect with the characters or the story. It didn’t stir any emotions in me. I didn’t feel a thing. No sympathy, no laughs, no tears, no pain, no emotions.

I was monstrously bored throughout, and the cliché set of events made it even more difficult for me to want to continue reading it. Eventually, by skipping a few pages here and there, I was able to finish it.

So here is what this book is about:

It is a cliché story of an abused woman and as in most books that tell an abused woman’s story, it fits in the template.

1. A woman who was abused violently by her ex
2. Family/police being of not much help
3. She runs away, changes her name and hides
4. She meets a decent guy and tries to learn to love and trust again
5. The guy is possessive and protective
6. She is given all the alarm bells that the ex has found her and is coming back for her but she remains to be an idiot not going to the police
7. They continue to live in the la la land while the evil ex makes his move, comes back and kidnaps her. Of course, he hurts her again
8. The possessive and protective guy fails to protect her because he didn’t bother to take enough precautions
9. She is hospitalized once again
10. The ex is back in prison, the happy couple back in their la la land

Will it ever change?

Is there a written or unwritten template that says an abused woman’s story should lead in this idiotic direction all the time?

Will some writer come and change the pattern or will we continue to be served the “same old story” all the time?

*********************************************

As you see, I am unhappy about two things here:

1. The dull and simple prose that failed to deliver the emotional transfer

and

2. The cliché set of events.

*********************************************

Hope to be able to find an original story sometime soon…

Rant over.

*********************************************

Safety:

For those who are still interested in the book, the book is safe, no cheating but there is one scene where an ex hook-up of the hero comes and kisses him. He tries to push her away but the heroine sees the kissing part. I wonder how a big man cannot push a woman away so as not to let her kiss him. Our heroine doesn't accuse him, though, she just yells at the woman!

Both the hero and heroine are celibate after meeting each other the first time.

The heroine didn't have any kind of love affair in the 4 years that passed after the trauma she had but the hero had casual hook-ups after his 2-year relationship ended badly.

Just awesome.

The life Harper was living was not the one she should. She had been through so much and it was still living the hell every day. Harper couldn't get away from the nightmare she had been through. Until she decided to make a big change in her life she was fed up of living in fear of everything. She just didn't know that the biggest change in her life was goin to be Trent Andrews.

Trent's life was pretty good he had his own Tattoo shop Second Circle and it was doing brilliant. Trent was the best in Miami everyone wanted his work on the bodies. He had woman wanting him so ye life was good. Until he met Harper Connelly was where his life would change he could see pain and fear he wanted to take the away he didn't where these feelings were coming from were coming from but he wasn't prepared for what was coming.

I should of read this book sooner. I don't know why I didn't but I should of it was just brilliant luvd everything about it. The story was so good I couldn't get enough of it. Harper's character was brilliant my heart went out her she didn't deserve to go through the hell she had. She was a great woman no was strong she just needed help to find that again. Trent is smoking hot big tattooed sexy he was a great man and so caring just what Harper needed but would Trent be what Harper needed.

I would highly recommend this book is was brilliant from start to finish. I could see where stories were forming and it's just made me want to read more from this series. I can't wait to know more.

Every once in a while I will stumble across a book's blurb... no nothing about the author or whether I should...and just be drawn to read this idea presented to me...Blurbs are supposed to make us curious and want for more...Well, Scarlett Cole did her her job because I made sure I had a copy and am glad I did.

This is a story of a woman who survived a horrific event in her life and was trying to move forward as best she could. It was interesting from the start. We know she is hiding from the one who did this scarring to her and she has worked hard to overcome all the issues she has. The catalyst to this journey we all travel is her deciding who is the best tattoo artist who handles scarring and coverage. Her goal is to have her back done in a way to hide what is there and set her free.

Now in any other book, that theme could have been used as just a hook... with a mention here and there of sessions and focused on sweet romance and done. Here, that was not the case at all. Here Ms. Cole took the entire process of tattooing and made it its own character.

When Harper was in the chair... I was in that chair... just as nervous as she was....And when Trent, our guy handles her, talks with her and starts his irons.... I am understanding all it involves...In other words... I felt the most informed about the whole practice and art form. We get this from both sides... from the one receiving the art... but also an in depth look from the artist himself. All of the rush in designing a large transformative piece, of figuring out how to make someones thoughts and desires come to life in a way which will connect forever to their soul...To be there and learn about the tools of the trade and how to make sure certain actions are done so there is less pain ... All of this is brought front and center... but as part of the tale... not clinical or injected because it needed to remember -"oh I need to say we are at the shop..." All of it flowed with every part of the story.

Now please don't think this isn't some hot alpha romance with people attracted to each other and sexy times...It is and does extremely well in that department. What was very cool was how we experienced the changes in Harper through her working to move forward from her past.

Our main guy Trent is everything a tattoo artist should be...plus he also has an interesting background and it makes him more thoughtful. He is captivated by Harper... willing to not be that "hit and quit it guy" he had been since his heart was broken....With Harper, right away he feels like protecting her... wanting to see more of the person she is hiding...and just wishing to hang out with her...Somehow she makes him feel good...even without sex...although he is wanting her from the start.

These two develop a friendship/client/budding romance... all through the tattooing at first... Harper has her only friend she works with...but soon all of the shop become her friends as well. Things are developing and are good...She is feeling stronger; She and Trent are getting closer...yet there still is a huge Elephant in the room she has not really confronted....

Her ex, who got a very light sentence, will be up for parole. This man had a powerful and rich family twisting law enforcement officials, judges and any other political figure to make Harper look like she was at fault of her own crime. Even when he was convicted and in prison, she was harassed. Her family had "accidents and thefts" to the point where it became dangerous for them. Harper decided to flee with only her attorney knowing she is in Miami.

Harper is hiding from Trent how complicated her past is... and now some of it is leaking into her present...How she handles it will be the question because this thing between Trent and Harper is good...healing and has a future.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Overall it worked on many levels. Yes, we all knew there was going to be some issues and Harper's denial did annoy to a minor degree...but overall everything was solid and good.

This book is a first in a series and we met were introduced to many intriguing characters...laying the ground work for up coming books. This did not feel slapped together... it had focus and style...and a very sweet love story. I will definitely be back for more.

Writing: I had a love-hate relationship with Scarlett Cole’s writing. It appears she is a researcher which feeds the student within. I learned some interesting things while reading this. It also encouraged me to research some concepts further.

BUT then there was...hmmm....not sure what to call it. The characters would do or say something, but Cole would forget that sometimes actions and words have implications on other parts of the story. Is that called ‘follow through?’ I don’t know.

Characters: MC’s are Trent and Harper. Trent was made more masculine by Cole constantly tearing down women. The male characters would frequently say things like: ‘I don’t have a vagina’ or ‘At the risk of sounding like a girl.’ ENOUGH ALREADY. I’ve read plenty of novels with very masculine men without the constant negative reference to women. UGH!
description/

Then there’s the reincarnated virgin Harper. My gosh. You were in a two year relationship and living with your ex-psycho boyfriend. Why does someone referencing sex make you blush or turn you into a preadolescent???
description/

Storyline: Harper is in hiding from a violent past. There is something she needs to take the final step at reclaiming herself and Trent, the hot tattoo artist can give it to her. But there is one little problem, Harper suffers from Haphephobia. Trent and Harper’s best friend Drea, provide unconditional love and affection to help Harper through her fears.

This story was really cool. I’ve never read anything with Harper’s issue. Cole did a great job at creating a problem that would bring the MC’s together. A deep need had to be in place in order for Harper to continue to see Trent and Cole created it perfectly.

HOWEVER, the execution...that’s another story. For someone to have such a bad case of Haphephobia, Harper sure got over it quick.
description/

Then there was the whole issue of the MC’s relationship. It was so superficial. There was nothing but the constant thoughts of sex and when they finally had sex...the constant sex.

Intimacy Scenes: Independent of the MC’s relationship, the steam was decent. However, I need the characters to have a connection in order for these scenes to be believable.

Overall: It was a good story. It just left me with lots of questions, like - how did Harper secure employment without submitting any identification (ID, birth certificate, SSN) or if she did then her manager should have really known who she was. Stuff like that just left me scratching my head. But the plot was very interesting. I learned about skin and tattoos. There were also Dante references which was nice.

Tis the season to give, right? So, I’m giving an extra star!

This book had everything I could possibly want in a story - A strong heroine who suffered something unimaginable but survived, a sexy tattoo artist who's top book boyfriend material, fantastic supporting characters, suspense, drama, and sexy times. I LOVED this book! Harper has scars that she wants covered so she goes to Second Circle to see Trent who specializes in tattooing over scars. There is immediate chemistry between these two and Trent recognizes something special in Harper and wants to help design her tattoo. I loved the build up to the relationship between Harper and Trenton, they develop a bit of a friendship at first that gradually builds up to more as Harper learns to trust someone again. I really loved this story and can't wait to read more by this author!

It is very common and repeatable type of story, but have to admit it's very pleasant to read. With the predictability of what happens it is always that, it depends on the amount of books you read like this. And while nothing surprised me, I believe that many will be delighted.

"The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire"

About the plot: Harper Connelly runs away from her past. She was attacked by her ex-boyfriend and even though he is now in prison and she is far from home, can not deal with normality. This left her scars, not only the physical but also the mental. Finally she decides to do something about it and goes to the tattoo studio, which is owned by Trent Andrews. Trent enjoys life, even though he has some problems with his self-worth that simply hides well. When he meets Harper, sees something about her so valuable that pretty quickly decides to risk his heart. Together Harper begins to open and re-build her confidence. To a time when past reminds about yourself.

Final thoughts: This book has a very good start. I quickly got caught with the story but unfortunately it was not so happily to the end. And although I gave a fairly high rating I have some doubts. Starting from the fact that it is written in the third person. I am not a fan of this type of narration. To the end I could not quite get used to it, but definitely it's a personal thing.

As already mentioned, the beginning of the book is very addictive and quite original, but the whole story was very predictable for me. This is a fairly typical story, maybe even sometimes it was too long and when I was aware of what will happen I would prefer more action. The main characters for their age seemed to me as immature. Sometimes it was even a little too perfect and I had to rolling my eyes. But I'm not sure if behind all my hesitation is not responsible still the narration. I am simply not a fan of this.

So why such high rating? In fact, it is 3-4 stars, regardless of my doubts. I could considered them immature, but it did not bother me so much to not like them and enjoy their history. This relationship is well built, from start to finish developing so well that reading it was enjoyable. A group of friends is also really promising, so for sure I reach for another part. And it has certainly funny moments.

“You guys are like mac ‘n’ cheese.”
“Mac ‘n’ cheese?”
“Yeah,” Cujo replied. “They both taste good on their own, you know. But together they are the best comfort food ever”

I'm not sure if I would have recommended it to everyone, but certainly many will like it. And for a debut is a really great book.

4 - The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire. Stars!

The Strongest Steel is the first book in the Second Circle Tattoos Series, and Scarlett Cole, being a new author has managed to take a set of pretty well used tropes and give them a refreshing and enjoyable new spin.

”Welcome to Second Circle.”

Harper Connelly has spent the last four years working an anonymous job, in a non-descript coffee house, and trying hard to not draw any attention to herself in Miami. Her past; nothing but a selection of nightmarish images, bad dreams and in general memories that she would rather not revisit.

Trent Andrews is at the top of his game, becoming known for his skills with the tattoo irons, his designs are unique, sought after and talked about. A chance meeting, late one night between him and Harper, starts a journey that both of them weren’t prepared for, or even expecting.

”I just want to get to know you. All parts.”

A girl with scars, a guy with the skills to take something unsightly and make it into something beautiful. The result; a tattoo that highlights strength, resilience and steely determination… but as the book progresses and Harper’s past starts to catch up with her, you ask yourself if the wearer of the tattoo, can live by, and practice the characteristics that it symbolises.

”Happy is by far your best look.”

I really enjoyed this book, Scarlett has managed to give both Harper and Trent great voices as well as a great storyline. There is plenty going on within their journey, and you need to be paying attention to make sure you don’t miss anything. A lot of thought has gone into the plot, and you can tell that in its execution. Nothing is left unexplained or underdeveloped. Yes, there is a lot of drama and a medium level of angst around the characters and the story but it isn’t overdone, or dragged out.

”I really want to do normal with you.”

I liked that Harper’s past, whilst horrific, was dealt with in a positive way. Trent was an absolute sweetheart, and the lengths he went to at the beginning of their time together to make sure she felt safe, comfortable and at ease with him and the tattooing process were an absolute treat to read. Nothing is rushed in their story, their relationship develops at the right pace for someone with Harper’s issues, and I loved the added tension that sprung up between them because of it.

”Tattoos and hugs. I’m great at them both.”

If you are looking for a little suspense, a little drama, some cracking verbal sparring, a couple that you can’t help but root for and a generally enjoyable story, then I don’t think you will be disappointed with The Strongest Steel it delivers on all of the above, and then some!

Cujo and Drea are due to have their story told in early 2016, I am looking forward to seeing where Scarlett takes this group of characters next.

"Are you trying to seduce me with dirty talk? Because I like it."

3.5... I've got mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, I loved the characters... Harper and Trent were both characters that I felt were interesting on their own and the story line, although predictable was still entertaining. On the other hand, I just didn't feel a very strong connection between Harper and Trent .. at least not as strong as I would have liked. There was just something "off" about their chemistry to me. That being said, I still enjoyed the story. Trent was patient and caring for Harper and she went through the process of trying to overcome a not so distant in the past horrible attack. She's starting to bloom and Trent is right there beside her as she struggles with bouts of PTSD from the attack and helping her take back her life. There is a second book in the series , The Fractured Heart , but I don't know if/when I'll get around to reading that one. That story will revolve around Cujo and Drea , who we met in this story. I just did not like Drea's character at all so I'll probably wait for a few reviews and see what others think of her. Perhaps in her own book she'll be better.

Casting...

Trent..

4 Amor condusse noi ad una morte stars

Harper Connelly is a scarred woman. Literally and figuratively. When she goes to a tattoo artist specialized in covering scars, she may start an emotional journey she's not ready to embark in.

I really liked how empowering this story was. Harper may start off as a scaredy cat (she's got every right to be), but as the story progresses you can see her become stronger and more fearless.

Trent was also another great character. He reminded me at time of Cam from "Wait for you." He's the easy-going, funny, sweet guy with bad boy looks and a protective streak. I loved their interactions and how he was always so considerate when it came to her issues. So many authors use past traumas like the one the heroine has been subjected only as a mean to justify her weakness or her skittish behavior, but here Harper's past soaked her every thought. Even in the end, she's not 100% okay, but she's made amazing steps forward.

The plot was a bit slow at first and it mainly focused on their relationship. On the other hand, the threat in the background grew in intensity and it made me actually quite scared for them because even if the villain was clear from the beginning, you didn't know when he would strike. For the whole second part of the book, I was like: "Here it's when the shit is gonna hit the fan". And each and every time, it didn't happen. I would relax and then, again... "Here is when..." You got what I'm saying. So yes, the suspense was good.

What more to say? Cole did a truly brilliant work with the side-characters. Normally, it takes me more than a book for them to grow on me, but the strained relationship between Drea and Cujo promised fireworks for the next book in the series, and I'd definitely would like to see if Pixie and Dred are gonna end up together.

Also, I appreciated their stance on tattoos, seen as an art and a respectable profession. Also, there were lots of tiny details about the tattoos-world that in other books did never come up, like the pain after or the cream you need to put on after each session, or how there are different tools, like the shader. Not having any tattoos and not running those circles, I had no clues about that world. It was a pleasant discovery.

All in all, really likable characters, amazing side-characters, nice plot. Why didn't I give it 5 stars? At the beginning it dragged a little and in general this novel didn't blow me away. Still, I would highly recommend it, especially because of the low dose of angst (Trent is one patient man!!!)

*** 4 amazing stars. ***

It's a great book for sure. Captivating and beautiful. A really sweet story.
I really liked Trent. And his music taste. AC/DC and Metallica and Iron Maiden in one book? Who could think of that? He rocks, he's totally awesome. (Sure must of the tattoo artists are Rock fans but no one is as incredible as him). I admired him for many reasons, like for understanding how to treat Harper, pushing her to the limits and then knowing when he has to stop.
Also, I respect Harper for being brave after this long time. Letting someone touch her after 4 years is a big deal after what she's been through.

Harper left her hometown after the attack carrying her scars with her. She quit her passion and her dream job. She's in Miami, working in a coffee shop now, hiding. He'll come back for her. Jail won't stop him. Her back is the prove, "my bitch". But after 4 years, it's time to move on, she hasn't even gone to the beach since the incident. So it's time to cover her scars.

Trent is a famous tattoo artist in the area. He's known for doing a good job covering scars. He loves his job. His tattoo studio is everything to him. But that won't last long. Since that broken girl walked into his shop wanting to have a tattoo and cover her unusual scars, he knows something had changed. He won't stop until he fully helps her going out of her shell. Even though he swore no commitment after his bitter experience, it won't last because Harper is different and he'll do anything for her.

Her attacker can be out of jail anytime soon now. He's sending these anagrams messages. He'll come back, he knows where she lives. But she can't run anymore. She has Trent and he's worth it. Her life is going better than she expected and she won't let him destroy it, not anymore.
She's worth fighting for. She deserves to live.

It's a beautiful story, I can tell you that. Fun and overwhelming, it was definitely an enjoyable read.

A young woman with just enough courage to walk into a tattoo shop.
A guy with just enough creativity to see beauty within the ugly scars.
Together they create a masterpiece while erasing the horrors of the past.

I gotta say, the premise is one that has been done before. However, there is just enough “extra” to make this feel different from the others. Maybe it’s the level of innocence and caring we get from Harper Connelly as we watch her journey into pain in order to rid of it emotionally. Maybe it’s Trent. Because when the tattooing hottie falls in love, he does it spectacularly well. Whatever the reason, I found myself enraptured with these two. Sweet, sexy and ripe with expectation is how I would describe it.

There are a few times I gave an inquisitive eyebrow while reading The Strongest Steele, but nothing a strong edit couldn’t help with. i.e. a few unfinished storylines and some unneeded monologues, but that’s minor in the bigger picture and nit picking at best.

It’s most definitely worth the read and perfect for the summertime beach read list!

HOLY BEGEESUS, what did I just read?!?!?! ... Scarlett Cole showed up, she wrote, and she blew me totally out of the water! THAT'S a way to make an entrance!!

5 Strong as Steel stars from this reader for The Strongest Steel!!

Harper Connelly is running. She's running from her ex. She's running from her past. She's running from her demons. She's running for her life! She's decided to cover up the physical scars of her past with a tattoo. Cue .. Trent Andrews.

Trent Andrews is serious book boyfriend material. He's a gorgeous specimen of a man both on the outside and the inside. He was patient, sweet and loving with our shy little Harper. He didn't just try and bulldoze his way into her heart by trying to fix her. No, he helped her see the strength she already had inside to overcome her past and her fears!

I'm not gonna lie and tell you this story is all rainbows and gumdrops cuz no it is not. There are serious issues at play here but Scarlett Cole does a phenomenal job with her writing style. She pulls you into the story and makes you believe.

I was touched and inspired by this story. It as a story of fear and growth, life hurdles and stumbling blocks, lust and love and most of all trust and friendship.

My hat goes off to you Scarlett Cole. Excellent debut into the writing world. I look forward to more more more MORE!!!!!

Spoilers ahead

Honestly I wasn't impressed, pretty much run of the mill with Harper's past being the most stand out thing in the book.

Harper moved from her old hometown and life as a teacher after her ex attacked her. She's working in a cafe now and wants a tattoo to cover up the scars on her back.

Trent is the owner of second circle tattoos, he's a bit of a manwhore though definitely not as bad as Cujo his best friend and colleague worker. From the minute they meet though he's only interested in Harper.

The beginning was cute with Trent bring so patient and sweet with Harper but everything else was per usual and a bit boring. Harper's refusal to think the texts could be from her ex and her refusal to go to the cops or even confess to Trent lowered my opinion of her. I'd have liked her to get some counseling because honestly dick isn't a cure all, not even good dick or the man it comes attached too.

Secondary characters were as typical as the mcs
A bit of OW drama from an ex hookup of Trent
Little comments about his past irked me

Eh it was just ok, it could be I'm in the wrong mood for this book but that's what it is for now.

“This mountains of such sort that climbing it is hardest at the start; but as we rise, the slope grows less unkind.” - Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy -

Color me impressed, the debut novel by Ms. Cole was really good. But there were some things that irritated me so I docked a star. I also found it refreshing and the book got me out of my book funk and that is always good for me.

I know that the whole stalker thing has been done, although this can’t really be defined as a stalker book. This is more premeditated I’m gonna kill you kind of book. Now, most of you would say meh, not interested but this book is different.

First of all I would like to say that Trent Andrews is one of the best book boyfriend of 2015.Well for me any way. He owns “Second Circle” his tattoo parlor. He is successful. Spending his misspent youth learning the trade. After his disastrous relationship he had he hasn’t thought about relationships since then. He is starting to realize he wants more though.

Harper Connelly has been living a half-life for the past four years with the circumstances, no surprise there. News that the perp is coming up for parole doesn’t go over that well.

But she has made a vital choice to helping herself heal. Her back is completely scarred, Trent specializes in tattooing scars and so a connection is built. Harper has an aversion to touch but with Trent’s help it gets better.

A lot of time, sweat and blood was put into this book and I think it is a good accomplishment. There is great character development throughout the book especially with Harper. She goes from a scared rabbit to a fighting tigress.
We were introduced to most of the characters but most of all I really would have liked to have met Reid in this book.

I would have liked to have seen that Trent thinking Harper didn’t like tattoos had been cleared up, miscommunication etc.

I felt that the last two chapters were a bit rushed. I also need a good epilogue purely out of selfish reasons it makes me happy.
I would also like to mention that there was a run in with one of Trent’s one nighter. She kissed him. He didn’t respond and pushed her off him. I think it was necessary to have this in the book because it shows how Harper was changing as a person. She was timid and scared and learnt how to fight back.

I look forward to the next book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐, 5

E decisamente in meglio.

really liked this one and it's a debut at that. great plot with a refreshing take on the tattooed bad boy genre. great well rounded main hero and heroine with secondary characters i am really looking forward to learning more of in the next books. i did feel the end drama happened too quick and was resolved too fast considering we spent all the book leading up to it but overall this one was very deserving of its praise!

Harper Connelly started a new life for herself after her ex almost killed her. She came into Trent's Tattoo shop to cover some of her scars with art, and thus began her mental, emotional and physical healing.

I loved the writing and the pace of the story. The character development and secondary characters were done really well. One of my favorite things about stories is to watch the evolution of the characters. Here Harper grew stronger and stronger to where she stopped running and fought back. She was more than a survivor here, she conquered her fears and gained something even better: Trent.

Speaking of Trent, I liked that he wasn't a "perfect" hero. He was a complex character with his own baggage and qualms. He wanted to make Harper's life better but he also wanted better for himself. They both helped each other to overcome emotional hurdles and it made the love even more enjoyable.

The narrator differentiated each character well. I never had trouble knowing whose inner monologue I was enjoying. I liked her smooth reading style and she added to my enjoyment of the book.

The only thing missing her was Harper and her brother's face to face. I wanted to know WHY. I hope I will eventually know why he didn't have his sister's back.

This was a really good book 1 and I am looking forward to book 2.

This book is more like a mini research on tattoo, music, and symbols. It was a good mini research. It provides the background of the story. But the romance is stiff. The conversation between Harper and Trent is shallow and can be edited better. Or add more depth into it. I still do not understand why Trent falling for Harper. It seems insta lust/ love.

Putting aside the research aspect, the romance story is also 1 dimensional. It can be edited adding more layer and twist. I mean I can guess about Nathan showing up before 50% of this book. And the length can be shorten by 30%.

I still do enjoy this book. I think I enjoy the mini research on this book. The author done a good job on researching.
