Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
Black Clover vol 4 takes the story up a notch!! Asta and Yuno face off each with their own opponent and Yuno has a love filled moment with Charmy (hahahhaha he saves her food!) Asta ends up with Fuegoleon Vermillion due to a trap set for the more advanced magic knights. And I love how Asta soaks up what he can from others like a sponge! He really listens to anything that will improve his skills as a magic knight! And I have to say that the secondary characters are so dynamite... in JUST THIS VOL I got sooooo attached to Fuegoleon... that is so incredible to me for a graphic formatted story.
Because I came to love Fuegoleon so much so quickly the tension was thick... And Yuki Tabata is NOT AFRAID to pound his characters into the ground... NO ONE is safe!! We are introduced to the Eye of the Midnight Sun... what I really enjoy is that it never feels like we are meeting characters just for an introduction, even though we totally are! I noticed that in Black Clover vol 3 too. And that twist is just mega good, mega, mega!
Black Clover vol 4 just became the standard for this series!! Seriously so, so good, the funnest and best shonen series I have ever seen as anime or read as manga. Asta and Yuno are great MCs and I adore seeing them fight but what I love are ALL THE OTHERS TOO! This feels like a world that exists and doesn't just revolve around a couple of punks who want to become the next sorcerer emperor...

Asta and the other Magic Knights continue to fight and his fight is with a guy named Rades who can control the dead and its epic sort of but then we learn of his origins but Asta's convictions triumph and also cool entrance and battle by Fuegeleon but he is down because well they were really after him and in other place a legendary power awakens for Yuno and the people behind this are made know: Eye of the Midnight Sun.
This volume was so good and had some great fights and character development moments and also showcasing the threats possessed by different magic users and this group seems interesting and also the art gets so much better and conveys the tension of the moment beautifully.
My. Goodness. Non-stop action from beginning to end. I used to harp on these characters and now I can’t get enough. Extremely suspenseful and engaging. I’m hooked. (Can you tell?)
Me learning more about Fuegoleon: OMG, I love this character! He's so awesome and strong and cool and fatherly and I LOVE HIM!!!
Me after a finishing the volume: FOR FUCK'S SAKE, TABATA, WHY AM I NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE NICE THINGS?! WHY?!?!?!?!
But in all seriousness, this was a great volume mostly because, once again, the characters and the fights were AMAZING. While I still don't like much of the higher-up magic knights, it was super cool seeing their magic in action. They may be one-dimensional assholes for now, but at least they can put their money where their mouth is for the most part.
I have to say, I hold a lot of respect for Yuno. It would have been so easy for Tabata to have him focus more on competing with the nobles rather than Asta, but seeing him still recognize Asta as his one true rival and put all of his effort into becoming stronger to surpass Asta is awesome. Also, him acknowledging that while he put in an intense amount of effort to get stronger, he still needs Asta's help shows what a mature, self-aware kid he is.
On a completely unrelated topic, Charmy is fucking amazing and speaks to me on a personal level. I honestly hope she gets more screen time because her magic is so fucking interesting and I want to see more of it and how she uses it. Oh, and Leopold is loud and hilarious and I fucking love him. Love my little lion cub.
However, if there's one complaint I have to lodge, it's that the villains are easily the most cliched and uninteresting bad guys I've seen in awhile. Look, I get that everyone and every thing in this series is cliched, but at least I can find some positives to negate that. Here, the only positive I can give is that their magic is really cool. That's it. While I want to feel sorry for Rades for what he went through, it's damn near impossible for me to do so when all he does is so over the top evil. Also Asta and Fuegoleon pretty much shut him down from the start, so yeah, a tragic backstory's not gonna make up for all the bullshit he's done.
Despite that, I'm more curious about the Eye of the Midnight Sun and their motivations as well as their reasons for wanting to destroy the clover kingdom. Hopefully they make up for the terrible villains introduced so far. Anyways, this was a great volume and I had a blast. Can't wait to see where that cliffhanger goes!
This book reminded me of some moments in the anime that I had forgotten, but were so good. I love this series so much, I can’t get over how good it is. This continues the epic adventure of Asta and his journey to become the wizard king. We do meet more of two of my favourite characters- the Vermillion brothers. I didn’t realise- that moment (you know the one if you’ve seen it) was this soon in the manga series. Hit me hard when it happened. Overall, amazing, love this manga series.
I love the art in this. The bold lines make everything and everone so epic- particularly Fuegoleon Vermillion! So cool! Favourite character so far :P I don't believe his dead, but he's a great mentor and there is so much he can offer Asta and Leopold in training.
Also, where did the bad guys take Asta?! :O

Reading this series makes me feel like I'm having a stroke I had to stop and check my pinch myself a few times to see if this wasn't some far-fetched dream. This is a how-to guide on making the most boring and generic battle shonen possible. This makes Naruto look like Chainsaw Man. This makes My Hero Academia look like Dragon Ball Z.
Now THIS is what I'm talking about! Great action and an engaging build to a bigger plot. The fight is still pretty drawn out but at least this time it has been interesting.
Series Info/Source: This is the fourth book in the Black Clover series, I bought this.
Story (3/5): In this volume a mysterious group of terrorists attacks the Clover Kingdom and all the Magic Knight must join forces to fight them. I thought this volume was a bit of a mess. We are introduced to what felt like a million new Magic Knights and, towards the middle of the volume, every other page was introducing us to a NEW MAGIC MOVE!!! There really wasn’t much story progression or character development at all. This was pretty much one long battle between the terrorists and the Magic Knights.
Characters (3/5): As mentioned above you see a ton of new characters in this volume from all the different bands of Magic Knights. While our favorites do show up quite a bit, they are surrounded by a million other characters that aren’t well developed at all. It was too much, too fast and hard to follow.
Setting (3/5): The whole story takes place in the capital of Clover Kingdom. It was an okay setting but pretty typical fantasy.
Writing/Drawing Style (3/5): While this continues to be one of the better drawn manga series, I really thought this was a bit scattered. We are jumping between multiple groups of Magic Knights that we haven’t met before and it gets very confusing at times. There isn’t a ton to read here because almost the whole story is one big confusing battle.
My Summary (3/5): This was my least favorite volume of this series yet, so far I have continued to buy this because my 13 year old son really enjoys them. I guess if you enjoy shounen with a ton of chaotic fight scenes and new magic moves shouted out on every other page you will really enjoy this. I thought both the story progress and character development were really lacking. I also thought the fight scenes were hard to follow at points. I have volume 5 to read, so I plan on reading it, but not sure I buy any more of these after that point.
Edging a bit closer to a 4 now. Not there yet, but I'm digging this.
There's a huge attack on the capital by a group of evil wizards. So they call upon the knights to try and stop them from destroying everything. But mid battle they get taken out of the playing field and it's up to Astra and the youngins to defend the city. Leaving it to some funny battles, some brutal ones, and a ending that did leave me a bit shocked.
The action is clear and easy to follow, the build up to the moves is cool, and the pacing is quick. The thing is, it's a typical shonen and it knows it. It has the main character saving the day but it somehow is entertaining. I'm hoping with a shocking defeat to a character we'll get into a dark territory and give the villains some meat. But for now, it is still fun to read.
Turns out that Rades dude brought company and this battle lasts for the whole volume. The villains begin by teleporting away the magic knights, but not the rookies so we can still have a fight. This point is a bit confusing, since it’s not clear if they were not teleported because they didn’t get a promotion, even if they deserved one, or the author just had them out of the range of the enemy spells because whatever. It doesn’t matter as our heroes kick the crap out of them, because power levels make no sense in the story.
The villains are retreating, but not before capturing Asta in a magic barrier. Something which makes no sense, since he is supposed to be able to counter all forms of magic. It’s almost like the author is making up bullshit as he goes along. Oh, wait, he does.
Some notes: - Never mess with Charmy's food or you'd definitely get it. Lmao. She's adorable. - Fuegoleon Vermillion is such a great captain!
Wise words from Fuegoleon: "Being weak is nothing to be ashamed of. Staying weak is!!"
"If you understand what you need to do, then get it done quick!!"
"Even if you possess phenomenal abilities and polish them to their fullest, without a just spirit, they're nothing but violence!! There is no one who will acknowledge something like that!!!"
I find that the more I read this series, the more I love Asta's development. So much happened in this one that really intrigued me. I flew through it and then very quickly picked up the next volume so I could keep reading and enjoying the adventures of these wizards who wish to someday be chosen as the next Wizard King.
The action, the fight, the way Asta never give up... Oh my God, this is chef's kiss This volume opens a question that I actually didn't remember I had, so it's being an awesome experience remembering all the mistery that dragged me to Black Clover
In a world of magic, Asta, a boy with anti-magic powers, will do whatever it takes to become the Wizard King!
Asta is a young boy who dreams of becoming the greatest mage in the kingdom. Only one problem—he can’t use any magic! Luckily for Asta, he receives the incredibly rare five-leaf clover grimoire that gives him the power of anti-magic. Can someone who can’t use magic really become the Wizard King? One thing’s for sure—Asta will never give up!
The Clover Kingdom is under attack by a mysterious mage who can control zombies! The greatest Magic Knights have come together to protect the kingdom and Asta’s caught in the middle of the ferocious battle!
I find that the more I read this series, the more I love Asta’s development. So much happened in this one that really intrigued me. That’s a vague overarching review for the volume. But I really did enjoy some of the dynamics that newer characters like Fuegoleon added to everything. And I absolutely love that how so many people treat Asta only helps him through one way or another. If someone respects him and gives him advice, then he accepts that and learns from it. But if a person continues to put him down and suggest that he won’t make it anywhere, then he uses that to fuel his drive to succeed.
I continue to be drawn further and further into Asta’s journey. I can’t help but cheer on these characters as they learn and grow. It is fascinating to behold, and this is a story/series I will continue to rave about, because I think more people need to check out the story of Asta and Yuno.
A resolution (for the most part) of the arc describing the attack on the capitol that began in volume 3. The Asta impresses again, but, thankfully, this time it is team work that ends up making him impressive at all, and the actions of other Magic Knights show us how very, very, far he has to go in his personal journey. It seemed the power creep was going to begin way to early in this story, but this volume sets a pause on that, leaving Asta revealed as an absolute novice in this world and its magical combat. A determined rookie with a healthy bit of talent and beginner's luck, but a long, long, way to go.
Aster is getting a little stale for me. Do something else bud. You're like a one trick pony. Yuno needs to step it up. He has the 4 leaf clover grimoire. COME ON! I am getting major Sakura vibes from Noelle. If she doesn't own her powers, she will forever fall short.
Wahhhhhhh. My poor Leon....
And can we talk about Charmy for a second? Her cotton power is so adorable, and I can see her kicking some major ass in the future. We were just given a little taste of what's to come.
