I needed a palette cleanser since I just finished reading a crappy, 360-ish paged fiction book. This little thing has been sitting on my bookshelf for about 2 years now so I decided to finally read it cover to cover. What I was originally looking for on Amazon was a portable and easy field guide since I do want to scuba dive with various shark species at one point in my life. I also wanted something to refresh my memory on sharks. What I found was this cute little book.

It’s nothing too complex - it has alot of shark facts that are easy to find online. What I really like is that you can also use this pocket-size encyclopedia as a field guide. It lists different types of sharks and has bite sizes facts about them. I sticky tabbed facts and pages I really wanted to remember, and every chapter that starts with a different group of sharks. It’s not the best and most informative “field guide” out there, but it’s just enough to give you a good idea of the many different species of sharks. I also enjoyed the section that clarified that skates, rays, guitarfishes and chimaeras are cartilaginous fish that are not taxonomically considered “sharks.” This guide is best suited for kids and people who don’t need too much information when out in the field.

It has a one minor tidbit of misinformation however - First, Helicoprion is taxonomically considered a Chimaera by evolutionary biologists, and it is NOT considered a shark. Second, the illustrated reconstruction of Helicoprion is ATROCIOUS. It is downright the worst reconstruction of Helicoprion I have ever seen. Now, since this book was published in 2016, I don’t know if Helicoprion being a Chimaera was something that was decided after or before. Either way, that’s really the only criticism I have for this book. Something that I also think is worthy from the ancient sharks page is that the Megalodon looks like a more accurate reconstruction; it’s not the usual oversized great white illustrated reconstruction that you see in the mainstream media and online. Which was a relief.

Eyewitness Skarks is the perfect book to give any child, or adult, interested in the scary nature of sharks! I personally, love this book. The reason that I originally grabbed this book this year was because it brought back SO many memories of me being in middle school and going to the library. Growing up I wasn't much of a reader, so these Eyewitness books were always right up my ally!

This book is full of information that is presented in such an awesome way! One thing that I immediately notice about this book is obviously the pictures. The pictures are SO COOL! It shows everything from people hunting for sharks. People taking pictures of sharks. And even sharks hunting prey! There's diagrams, comparisons, maps, tables, and even a facts section all about sharks! The book takes us through all the different kinds of sharks that make this book something that you'll want to pick up for any shark loving member of your family.

I love these series the DK publishing makes. These pocket books are perfect for travel (waiting in doctor’s offices or hospital waiting rooms)!

Teaching you all about the different kinds of sharks. You learn where they live, what size they grow to, how they hunt or travel, what they eat and what eats them. I read this at the same time as the book “I survived the shark attacks of 1916” and it was awesome learning about sharks.

This is a pretty handy quick reference guide for varieties and categories of sharks and related animals.
It's well organized and is packed with as many illustrations as you can hope for in such a small package. It is by no means comprehensive in terms of the information provided about the individual shark species. Nonetheless it's a great place to start for anyone looking into sharks.
