The Billy Green saga continues! Billy’s challenging, sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, always unpredictable journey.
He was more determined than ever to find meaning in life and comfort in love.
Billy came to know one thing for sure.
Love is real.
He could now with the absolute cocksure confidence of pure enlightenment, scoff at the naysayers and spit in the face of the purveyors of romantic nihilism, the cynics who say that love is an illusion.
Billy knew the real score. Love is the light that never dims. Love is a wine that flows in our hearts. Love is a wonder that has no beginning or end. Love is a master key that opens the gates of perfection. Love is the language our souls use to speak to one another. Love is the trafficking of fantasies and transcending of mortality. Love is an energy that can neither be created or destroyed. Love is God Allah Yahweh Shiva Qat Aphrodite. Love is touch smell feel taste listen pray. Love is the poetry of the senses. John Rachel has a B. A. in Philosophy, has traveled extensively, is a songwriter and music producer, and an evolutionary humanist. He has spent his life trying to resolve the intrinsic clash between the metaphysical purity of Buddhism and the overwhelming appeal of narcissism.
Author Rachel has written ten novels, and five non-fiction books. He has also had over 40 short stories, 9 poems, and over 200 political articles published in both print and online magazines.
He has traveled through and lived in 34 countries since leaving America August of 2006, but is now somewhat settled in a small traditional farming village in Japan near Osaka, where much to the annoyance of his neighbors tries to sing his original songs. His next project, as he slumps in a hammock he purchased in Vietnam and waits for the Good Ship Lollipop to appear on the horizon, is a anthropological novel about the worship and eating of giraffes, set in sub-Saharan 18th Century Africa. It is mostly the product of the voices in his head which have plagued him since puberty, a biological transition that occurred when he was 34 and working on a chain gang in Arkansas. He was at the time serving a 10-year sentence for destroying the do-not-remove label from a pillowcase he bought at a yard sale.
Author Rachel has two completed but unpublished books. One is a fantasy/travel/cookbook called "What Do Mermaids Eat?" The other is political manifesto called "War Is Making Us Poor!: Militarism Is Destroying the US".
The author’s last permanent residence in America was Portland, Oregon where he had a state-of-the-art ProTools recording studio, music production house, a radio promotion and music publishing company. He recorded and produced several artists in the Pacific Northwest, releasing and promoting their music on radio across America and overseas.
John Rachel now lives in a quiet, traditional, rural Japanese community, where he sets his non-existent watch by the thrice-daily ringing of temple bells, at a local Shinto shrine. These days, he's mostly immersed in good vibrations.
Billy Green is back, and life for Billy is a concentrated kaleidoscope of his own head in the clouds attitude where everyone has a happy – ever – after and the reality of life with all of its nasty warts and scars. Yep, for Billy, reality is like a bulldozer coming at him, head on and he fails to really believe it won’t stop just before he is run over emotionally.
In his little slice of the universe, things are painful, shocking, heart-breaking and depressing, yet all around him life is going on, the world keeps turning, governments churn, music rages, people live their lives and in the scheme of things he is nothing more than a gnat in a cornfield. Only Billy can help Billy, but he is too busy feeling bad for Billy to save Billy from Billy. Is that statement confusing, chaotic? Yep, but it clearly states the predicament Billy finds himself wallowing in. Life has thrown Billy his fair share of rotten eggs, tarnishing his versions of marriage, work, and life in general, leaving him to self-implode upon hitting rock bottom. Will he ever find himself and pull himself out of the cesspit he has chosen to wallow in? Will he learn to move on and thumb his nose at adversity? How about making things about more than just Billy?
The Man Who Loved Too Much: Book 2: Entendre by John Rachel is like reading a work of highly stylized, contemporary art. We all see something different, our feelings and reactions are all from our own perspective. John Rachel writes with a chaotic pen, building a world that appears normal on the outside one minute, and then a tsunami of emotional baggage the next. His characters are completely likable one minute, then, poof, they act cold as ice. Billy, well, Billy is one hot mess, trying to do the right thing, trying to live the “HEA” without a mapped out route to do so.
I absolutely love the reading challenge John Rachel presents, as he whirls a few huge twists around, dumps historical facts for the time period, but never loses his focus on Billy, who, I must say he is torturing at this time! Maybe because he grew up in Detroit? Maybe because he is a world traveler how has witnessed many cultures? Or is it that he knows how to hook his readers and hold them hostage until the very last page! Take a step out of your usual genre and take a ride on the whirling dervish that is John Rachel’s world, you will be amazed!
I received this copy from John Rachel in exchange for my honest review.

"The Man Who Loved Too Much: [Book 2: Entendre]" by John Rachel
Wow! All I can say is this was some read. I must say I would suggest you read this author's first novel 'The Man Who Loved Too Much [Archipelago #1]' before reading this novel which continues on from book one. I found in 'Book 2: Entrendre' was quite a continuous journey of life as it was for Billy Green. I liked how this author was able to bring it all out with this person being so innocence and naive truly giving us a quite a read of just what all Billy Green had to through. Will Billy come out of all that is presented to him and still be the 'good' Billy Green as his mom sees him as? Will Billy really find the true meaning of just what 'Love Is' as he goes on with his life that seems not to be going the way he would like. But one thing for sure is that Billy was loved by his sweet Mom. Sorry I had to slip that in and at a point in the read he needed some love. I loved how this author was able to bring that relationship out so well to the readers. I will say the reader will be presented with some real interesting characters in this read ...some continues from the 'book one' and then 'book two' which there were some that were likable ones however, there were some not so likable ...and I can name three or four right off the bat.... as you continue to read from the novel. From the story we get quite a interesting well written story that will keep your attention in this read. I don't want to spoil it other than say you must pick up this novel to see what else will go on in Billy Green life as he seeks to find out or should I say will he truly find out what real true love is with the and main question being will he ever get what he really wants in life? It was quite interesting how this author deals with and brings what all is going in the life of Billy Green as he will leave one area and go to another. What is that all about? Will Billy find what he is looking for from this major move? Again, pick up this novel where all of these questions and much more will be answered. So, if you are looking for a 'challenging, humorous, tragic and very unpredictable' story then you have come to the right place for "The Man Who Loved Too Much Book 2: Entendre" will be a good read that I would definitely recommend to you. I will be looking for the next book 3 to get the end of it all of this story of Billy Green.
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. The story continues with Billy Green's life after college. He get's married to Natalia finds a job with Habitat for Humanity. They buy a 1910 old Barn style house. The Marriage didn't last long they got divorced and sold the house to pay off the bank and they split the difference. Billy soon meets Candy (Susan Kalkin) and once again they are together. Billy has some skeletons in his closet but what are they? You'll have to read the book to find out ! I can't wait for book three to see what happens next !!
This really pushes the envelope. It's a roller coaster ride from the stars to the depths of Hell. I'm not sure how people are going to feel about this book, the second phase of Billy's life. His innocence is not lost. It is stolen. Brutally. Treacherously. Callously. But that's becoming a more common story, as most of us are finding out. It's entropy of the human spirit, the inevitable decay to disorder and chaos, before a new regime appears to tidy things up again.
John Rachel’s second book follows his first in a lyrical musical rhythm, with a beat, and the contrapuntal symphony of introspective dancing words. The subtitle Entendre underscores this work; unsubtle with a single meaning. But it is damn clever, close to the bone stream of consciousness writing.
Chockablock with insights into pop-culture and political observations — the work presents a tsunami of depraved, reflective mental torture expressed poetically coursing through the mind of Billy Green. The author’s candidly, beautifully executed mental reflections reminded me of Marcel Proust’s detailed mental pondering in his classic work “Swans Way.”
Outwardly Billy Green spews out a plethora of nonstop wise-ass, zingers, zappers and one line responses in conversations with friends and enemies alike.
Is Billy is expecting too much from his life — a hollow adult — all shiny lacquer gloss — expecting others to fulfill his vacuous soul — and damn lucky in his life so far. Which head is the poor Billy thinking with? His big head or the one located at the tip of his penis? Reading this work I felt compelled to give Billy Green a swift kick in his ass.
Maybe this book could be titled: “The Man Who Loves To Think Too Much.”
Then again, reading this work reminded me of the role of parents in raising their children. For many contemporary parents, family values and moral standards are missing. The parents behave like their kids, smoking pot, shooting up drugs, boozing, and indulging in casual sex. They are role models, so it’s no surprise that their children follow their lead with impunity.
The richest nation on earth is morally bankrupt. On a massively larger scale; examine the current morality of the American totalitarianism government’s subterfuge; trickery, intrigue, deviousness, deceit, deception, dishonesty, cheating, duplicity, guile, cunning, craftiness, chicanery, pretense, fraud, fraudulence, corruption, double dealing, outright lies, spying, and torture. No wonder the citizens of this powerful nation have gone to pot.
Like loving parents, good governments exhibit the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. The values and principles of conduct: virtue, goodness, good behavior, righteousness, rectitude, uprightness; morals, principles, honesty, integrity, propriety, honor, justice, decency; ethics, standards/principles of behavior, mores, standards. The current American government has set the standards for their citizens (children) to follow.
That’s the overshadowing message I received reading this fascinating and thought provoking book. This is an important read, for sane people in a world that’s rapidly going berserk.
Certainly I’ll be reading more about confused, drugged and drunk Billy Green on a runaway fright train heading into the third and final book in “The Man Who Loved Too Much” Trilogy — chugga choo chugga choo…
The second of a trilogy, "Entendre" continues with the story of Billy Green, now exploring his marriage to Natalie, the love of his life.
They are both successful young adults with good jobs and a beautiful home. Things couldn't be better, that is until Natalie's best friend resurfaces, and becomes a permanent fixture in their lives. While Billy believes Natalie is his soul mate and shares his happiness, Pam's reappearance puts a slight damper on their relationship, as she takes up a good portion of the time the couple previously spent together.
Along the way, they are introduced to new acquaintances, some of them quite eccentric. As time goes on, Billy begins to wonder if his life with Natalie is as he sees it...or is it just an allusion? The answer will come to light quickly enough, but it is really not what Billy expected. Now he struggles to deal with the situation…and tries to retain his sanity, as his world is turned upside down.
Looking forward to the third installment to find out if Billy survives the heartache, or does he succumb to a slippery slope leading to the bottom of a bottle.
The man who loved too much entendre book 2 by Rachel is a philosophical rant/romp through the life of the main guy Billy. "It certainly evaporated with the ease that a dream evaporates, dissolving into the harshness and cruel isolation of real life." (p.202) Billy was happy, happily married but there were chinks in his armour or amour that were going to bust it apart. As his mother regained her life, Billy was sinking into the epitome of nothingness. Billy is a developed character who loves the wrong people. Is being unemployed as low as one can go? Is there a chance for he and Candy? I look forward to the next book.
This outstanding story has me needing to know (Right Now) that Billy will find happiness, or at least find some state of good fortune, pleasure, and contentment. The second book in this series and I was not disappointed. Billy's journey continues as he searches for life's answers. The author has a unique style that draws you into the story and doesn't let you go until the end. Billy's trek is tragic, humorous and unpredictable. I would like to thank the author for providing me with an electronic copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. I would be enthused to read the third book of the trilogy, to find out if Billy will find happiness in his life.
I was given a pdf copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the second installment of the Billy Green story, and having really enjoyed this first part I was excited to read it. Well another well written book. I found myself yelling " Don't do it Billy" and "Don't go in there" and "What the heck are you thinking".I have become invested in his life, and can't wait to find out how it will end.
This book continues with Billy Green's life in College. Then to marriage to a job then to not so happy times. I like how this series takes you from when he was a young child into adulthood. With every turn of the page, Billy's life unfolds in the real world and history that came in those months and years.
The second book in this series and I was not disappointed. Billy's journey continues as he searches for life's answers. The author has a unique style that draws you into the story and doesn't let you go until the end. Billy's trek is tragic, humorous and unpredictable. I look forward to reading more as the search for love continues.
I have received this book for a review. This book continue and follow Billy thru his college. He have a tough life and it seem it's isn't getting any better, and some days he did have a better. I have laugh, felt sad and happy for him. I really like this book
The first book in this trilogy was very good but I have to say that this one left me wondering if I even wanted to read the third. This is the second of the trilogy, still following Billy Green's life. Yes, he had a miserable childhood though he truly loves his mother. He goes off to college (in the first book) and has his first taste of adulthood. He lost his virginity in College and thinks he has fallen in love with yet another. In this second book, Billy gets married to Natalie and they buy an old farmhouse and begin their lives as a couple. The marriage doesn't last long and he is left disappointed. I am not really sure that he really has grown up. In my opinion, he takes a very childish approach to his life. I was disappointed with this book and I must say that I am not sure that I even want to read the third.
This is Book 2 of the Billy Green saga. It begins with Billy’s college class with students engaging in comprehensive studies on Dear Abby letters, thus, provoking feministic views and gender equality.
Story is a journey of self-discovery and especially love. But what was love? That’s the eternal question on Billy’s mind.
The writing itself was sentimental and thought-provoking; however, the reading was not as compelling as the first book, for some reason. Following Billy’s story seemed more challenging this time.
Still, it’s good writing, but the story wasn’t so great.
Billy Green was enrolled in Dr. Phyllis Hargus Intro to Social Psychology. Her classroom topic was the newspaper or other advice columns & those type of TV talk show hosts gave very good advice to the general public.
Billy of course thought otherwise they are both bogus. The classroom format consisted of Dr. Phyllis Hargus reading a very provocative or sexually explicit scenario & the class had to give their advice on it. Fast forward there is no final but each of the 33 students must address a letter to Dear Hargee (Professor Hargus) & then write their own unique provocative or sexually explicit scenario. Next step is to run off 32 copies, pass them out & each student will give each other student their advice on how to solve the issue. This is the student’s final grade. Natalie graduated from Cornell (BS Human Ecology, Summa Cum Laude), moved to Newburgh, NY & got a job at Seminole Environmental Consultants. Billy gave her the 1½ carat diamond ring that Pam her BFF bought & gave to Billy. Pam later moved in with Natalie. Spring semester; Billy went back to Cornell (Ithaca). Billy had 2 roommates this semester: Garth Francot (Wright Patterson AF Base) & Julianne her B/F is Aaron Julianne & Billy began to have regular Tuesday night sex. Now add on Thursday.
Billy was falling in love, Julianna assured him he was only a Fuck buddy for her. Summer time; Billy graduated from Cornell with a B.A. in Sociology & Ecological Systems. William Green & Natalia Diamond got married. Pam & Chuck Everest (Natalie’s co-worker) were the witnesses. Billy, Natalie & Irene (Billy’s mom) went to the 7/4, parade that was in full progress in Newburgh, NY. Harold (Billy’s dad) was in Sturgis with his motorcycle buddies. Mayor Wayne Brinks & Annie Roberts (Grand Mistress) rode standing up in a 1958, pink/white Edsel convertible. Fast forward, Billy now worked for Habitat for Humanity as a Regulatory & Systems Compliance Analyst.
4 other employees were: Henry Blackledge (director), Davey Zjaborski (NYU), Mike Spaneau (U/Pittsburgh), & Katie Katrina Burke (UNC). Billy & Natalie bought a 1910, old barn-style house from Mr. & Mrs. Peacock.
Later Natalie & Pam are flying to Ibiza, Spain? When Natalie got back she informed Billy (23) she wanted to have a baby.
The marriage did not last long. The 2 sold the house, paid the bank off & split the difference. Billy (aka Frank) moved to NY, Nathalie back in with Pam. Billy soon meets Candy (Susan Kalkin) & they are right back in the saddle. What skeletons does Billy have in his closet?
Warning: This book is for adults only & contains adult content or language &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written YA humorous could be a memoir book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great YA comedy movie, or mini TV series. It will leave you hanging. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

"Entendre" (The Man Who Loved Too Much #2 ) follows Billy Green's humorous, painful and tragic search for a meaningful life and fulfilling love. The story begins with his fiancée Natalie's graduation and move to Newburgh, New York where she's living with her overbearing friend Pam while Billy who suddenly finds himself between roommates at Cornell agrees to share his flat with Julianne. With a guilty conscience he starts a sexual relationship with the beautiful Julianne and finds that he has enough love for both women in his life.
His emotional confusion decreases when Billy follows Natalie to Newburgh after graduation working at Habitat for Humanity and marrying the girl of his dreams. Only as time passes does his suspicions about Natalie's out-of-town excursions and close friendship with Pam grow, although their blissful marriage is still charged with sexual excitement. When he returns home one evening having forgotten a copy of his speech for a charity dinner his world turns upside down and his heart is shattered. Struggling with his pain, sorrow and emptiness Billy decides to take a chance, to find new meaning in his life and search for love again.
With laughter and tears John Rachel juxtaposes Billy Green's turbulent love life against a setting filled with major historical events in a chaotic world. Cleverly in the Prologue with a college assignment that revolves around personal advice columns and social interaction Billy's idealism and suspicions are revealed in his submission that exposes Pam as the purchaser of his engagement ring for Natalie.
With a fluid writing style and natural dialogue he brings realism to a parody on life that has confusion and heartbreak swirling around Billy as he faces agonizing decisions that have severe consequences. His sexual romp with Julianne splits his heart between the two women, and he wonders if he's actually in love with Natalie while she gives him carte blanche in a cryptic message to "love the one you're with". Yet he blunders into marriage still loving Natalie although suspicious and anxious about her relationship with Pam. In a roller-coaster ride with twists and turns that eventually find Billy wallowing in his suffering he begins to wonder if love is nothing more than an allusion.
Enriching the drama are characters who are passionate, vibrant and complex like Billy who's very trusting, enthusiastic and congenial. Naive and vulnerable, he wallows in his grief and heartbreak allowing Natalie to take advantage of him as he searches for renewed purpose in his life. Haunted by guilt at neglecting his mother over the years, he doesn't turn to her for support even though she has to be strong-minded living with a Hell's Angel want-a-be and recovering from cancer. Instead he flounders, seeking answers and solace in alcohol, drugs and meaningless sex. Plagued by an abusive childhood Natalie Diamond is the brazen, faithless, domineering wife who relies on her blunt, confident and obsessive friend Pam as an anchor in times of need. Ironically none of the characters really know what love is, equating it to sexual gratification.
"Entendre" (The Man Who Loved Too Much #2 ) is fascinating and stirring as Billy bumbles through life hoping that real love exists and that it's still out there somewhere. The reader can't help but root for him, hoping in the third book he'll find purpose and love again.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with an electronic copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review. As a continuation of book one, Billy Green has now started his adult life with grown up responsibilities and problems. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Billy's life has taken a depressing turn. The sarcastic wit and repartee that are essential parts of Billy's character in book one are missing, which takes away a big part of what drew me to Billy in the first place. I did enjoy the time period references, as it is nostalgic for me (being that I was a teenager in the 80's). Although I did like book one substantially more, I would still like to see where the author takes Billy into the future.
The man who Loved Too Much by John Rachel,is a very surprising book. The charcters warmed my heart, had me cheering for romance and shaking my head in sorrow as their life changes. A great romance with lots of laughs, sad and funny. I would love to also read the first one in the series and the next one. I won this book through goodreads and received a copy of the book from the author. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
Many thanks to the author for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review. This is the second instalment in the trilogy and it picks up where the first one left off. We follow Billy as he finishes college and marries Natalie. They buy an old farmhouse and both appear to be very happy, and they are until one day Billy gets the shock of his life. Billy and Natalie end their marriage and he tries to move on. Will Billy ever find true love? I can't wait to find out in the final instalment.
The Billy Green saga is now continued! Billys challenging, humorous, tragic, yet unpredictable journey is continuing. He is so much more determined to find meaning in life and love.Billy knew one thing for sure.Love is real.He could now with the absolute confidence of pure enlightenment,
I am enjoying seeing what this guy goes through. I am eagerly awaiting book 3. Would like to know what is happening with him. I look forward to reading more about Billy.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
First I want to say that the writing style is wonderful. Billy's thoughts are very interesting. That being said, the storyline wasn't what I typically read so I had some trouble getting into the plot and I actually liked the first book much better.
we continue to follow Billy. In this book, there are a lot of ups and downs for Billy. The relationship ends, and Billy is trying to put together a new life for himself.
