If there is one thing eighteen-year-old Aurora Sky wants, it’s to get off the iceberg she calls home. Being kissed before she graduates wouldn’t hurt either.

Then a near-fatal car wreck changes everything. Government agents step in and save Aurora’s life in exchange for her services as a vampire hunter. In Alaska. Basically she’s a glorified chew toy. All thanks to her rare blood type, which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis right before she has to finish the job… by hand.

Now Aurora’s only friends are groupies of the undead and the only boy she can think about may very well be a vampire. And if he’s a vampire, will she be forced to kill him?

Read this whole book today in one sitting for the 'not letting go of a book' challenge for the booktube a thon
I LOVED how saucy this book was. It fitted perfectly into the story and was the cherry on top of this dark world that Aurora has been introduced into.

I loved the characters i needed to love and hated others. i need to read the rest of this series!

Aurora Sky (Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter #1) by Nikki Jefford is a different kind of vampire story. Aurora is a teen that dies in a car crash and is brought back by a group (government?) that changed her blood that made her blood poison to vampires. She has to be a vampire hunter or she doesn't get the shot a month to keep her alive. Too bad the guy she meets and falls in love with is a vampire. Fun read.

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. I made the mistake of thinking it was an adult book because is says 18+ but it's all set in high school and there's nothing I hate more than petty high school squabbles. Sorry to say I won't be reading book 2. So disappointing.

4.5 "A New Bite on Life" Stars for the story and narration!

Move over Buffy, there is a new teenage vampire huntress in town! Given that YA vampire romance is how I became hooked on audiobooks (yes, you know which series I'm talking about: )) and that I watched nearly every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer way back in the day, I'm ecstatic to say that I have found a new vampire series to dig my teeth into: Aurora Sky! Book 1 in the series does a fabulous job of setting up this creative take on vampire lore with a YA audience in mind. Moreover, Em Eldridge's smooth narration makes this a perfect choice to experience in audio format!

When Aurora Sky wakes up from a car accident, on a secret military base, as a different person (literally--or at least a highly engineered version of herself--think the teenage huntress equivalent of the Bionic Woman), Aurora knows that her life will never be the same again. Injected with a virus that makes her blood similar, and yet highly toxic, to vampires; the military agents inform Aurora that if she wants to continue receiving the frequent antidotes that she will need to keep her alive, she must work with them to kill vampires. Aurora who has never been particularly athletic, is perplexed by this request, until she learns that her secret weapon requires no prior or unique combat skills: its her blood--one bite renders a vampire immobile allowing her to easily finish him or her off.

But Alaska resident and 18 year-old, high-school senior, Aurora, is still a teenager with typical teenage problems, as can be best demonstrated by a list of resolutions she compiles shortly after her transformation:

1. Kill first vampire,
2. Get drunk,
2. Kiss a boy, and
3. Lose virginity

"With the first done, everything else should be easy!" Famous last words?

Book 1 also introduces us to a number of potential love interests. From Aurora's vampire hunting partner, Dante, to a boy from school, called Fane, who turns out to be so much more than just a boy, Aurora has her hands full with both her personal life as well as her nocturnal activities. But will she actually get to cross all the items off her list before she finds a vampire who hunts her down instead?

Having listened to, and thoroughly enjoyed Em Eldridge's narrations before (in her narrations of several books of Penny Reid's Knitting in Clay series), I knew I was in for a treat from a narration perspective. I'm happy to say that Ms. Eldridge didn't disappoint. From her perfect rendition of Aurora, who I can picture just from her intonation, to even her perfect British accented intonation for Fane's roommate, Ms. Eldridge spares no detail in making her narration exactly adapted to the story that Nikki Jefford has penned! Moreover, Ms. Eldridge's pacing and smooth voice make listening to this title seamless, so that you can just sit back and enjoy the story.

All in all, Aurora Sky is a great debut to a YA PNR/UF romance series that I will no doubt want to explore in much greater detail. Now I can't wait to start book 2 in the Vampire Hunter Series, Northern Bites!

This has been a book I've seen recommended a lot so I'm glad I finally found the time to begin this series. I'd thought it was aimed at a younger audience with its teenage heroine Aurora, but actually there's content here that does have more adult tones.
Essentially Aurora is one of the very few that have a rare blood type and with a bit of scientific jiggling her blood can be poisonous to vampires. Now that was an angle I hadn't seen before so I was very interested to see how far this storyline could go. Aurora is sent back to school to await her first assignment as a vampire hunter but all is not exactly going according to plan. This good girl resents the changes thrust upon her and a new belligerent Aurora starts walking the halls. Suddenly those who previously didn't really see Aurora start to take notice of her as she steps out of her previously light world and into a much darker reality.
I liked the ideas behind this and it was fun seeing Alaska used as a setting. The concept of the types of vampires and how hunters could work amongst them just didn't quite gel with me though. A lot of this story is based around Aurora and her changes at school which brings me to supporting characters . There's smarmy agents, catty school friends and of course nasty and perhaps even nice vampires! Two male characters stood out so I'm guessing the author intends to (hopefully) flesh them out but if honest I struggled to like Aurora. I did sympathise with her admittedly but her attitude truly sucked! Not snarky just snotty, childish at times and so reckless I wanted to shake her. If you enjoy vampire stories it's worth a shot but for this reader it's a little disappointing but as the first in the series I'm hoping it will improve

Aurora Sky is a normal high school senior with dreams of attending college and getting as far as she can from Alaska. She’s been accepted to Notre Dame and she has six more months to go until she is free.

Then the accident happens. Aurora has a head-on collision on an icy road and she wakes up in a government facility where she learns she almost died and they used extraordinary measures to save her life. Why? Because Aurora is very special and they want her to work for them. Her blood is toxic to vampires and a special branch of the government expects her to become a vampire hunter. Oh and she has no choice in the matter if she wants the medicine she needs to live. Suddenly, she is training with a hot new mentor and killing vampires and trying to cope with the reality that she might never be able to leave Alaska. Her home life is a mess and her best friend dumps her. The only bright spot is Fane, the unattractive, yet oddly compelling bad boy who suddenly shows interest in her.

I loved this book. I liked how Aurora’s character evolved from an awkward teenager to a bit of a bad ass, especially with everything going on around her. I especially liked Fane. He is so well written and it’s refreshing to see a male love interest who isn’t drop dead gorgeous with chiseled abs (although I see nothing wrong with that) :-) I enjoyed the interactions between Aurora and Fane and how their relationship grew. One of my favorite scenes is the bus scene. Read it and you'll see what I mean.

All the characters are well developed and contributed something to the story. Her parents were totally dysfunctional. The government agents were suspicious and obviously not telling everything. Her new friends were colorful. Dante was hot and adorable at the same time. There was danger and humor and enough sexual situations to make this book NA even though the main character is a teenager. It all fit together very well in a clever story that hooked me from the first scene.

I had so much hope for this book, I was really excited to read it but I got 54% in and I could not read another page. I felt like the premise was really interesting with a girl who was genetically altered to be a vampire hunter but when said girl is so unlikable it made it really tough to get through.

Aurora, the main girl was just all over the place. She was snotty, rude, reckless, and lacking any real charm to be able to pull off such traits. What struck me was that I could never determine the motive behind Aurora's recklessness. I understood she had a second chance at life, coming back from the dead and all but I didn't see why that was an excuse to do the boneheaded things she often did. I honestly tried my best to like and sympathize with Aurora but it was really hard to do so because all Aurora did was complain and I admit her situation was less than ideal but she never once tried to take it for what it was and deal with it. Fane, the love interest didn't do much for me either. He was basically your run-of-the-mill bad boy who was secretly kindhearted. Maybe I would like Fane more if I liked Aurora more but I don't know, Fane ignored her for a bit and then all of a sudden started showing interest in her well-being and making thoughtful comments and overall, I just wasn't feeling them together.

All of the supporting characters failed to make an impression, so I'm not really going to mention them. I'm just disappointed because I don't like writing negative reviews and I like not finishing books even less but Aurora's exploits didn't motivate me to want to see her adventures to the end.

If you are a vampire/vampire hunter book lover, then I think this book would be for you. I really enjoyed the story and the writing style of Nikki Jefford. The new concept of the vampire hunter that she brought along really caught my attention. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next installment! I definitely think you should give this book a try :)

As I mentioned before, I really enjoyed the new concept that Nikki Jefford had with the vampire hunters. The whole blood transfusion/virus was a really unique twist on a popular concept and that's what made the book that much more intriguing. Also, this book was a very quick read for me. It was a definite page turner and had lots of elements that grabs your attention.

I enjoyed the majority of the characters in this book. Aurora is the only one I don't know where I stand. At times I liked her, but then at times I didn't. After the accident a new Aurora emerged. Her behavior was entertaining to me because I felt like she was acting out, but then I started to wonder why exactly she started acting like that. Was it the whole situation that was sprung on her in general? Fane was awesome :) In the beginning I didn't know if he was going to be a major asset to the book, but as I continued to read about him, the more and more I liked him! The chemistry between Fane and Aurora was a plus and I can't wait to see how things turn out in book 2.

There are still some minor things I'm confused about, but its nothing too serious. Like why Aurora's first group of friends acted the way they did towards her. And Aurora's mom, can we say annoying?! I mean she's your typical mom, but I had some major eye rolling going on throughout the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book! And can't wait for the release of the sequel. Thanks so much to Nikki Jefford for a review copy of Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter. All thoughts are my honest opinion.

The overall story was not bad. However Aurora was a problem for me. She was stupid, childish, and annoying. I found myself annoyed or angry with her throughout the book. When I find myself feeling these things about the main character I just can't be okay with a book. The only good thing about this book was the ending.

Poor

Reasons why I did not like this book:
○ the writing itself was boring and not engaging.
○ the plot itself was rather confusing and there was no build up or tension to anything, everything just happened like the author was ticking things off a list.
○ the characters were quite shallow, and half the book was just meaningless teenage squabbling. Not fun to read.

A unique take on Vampires and Vampire hunters. Aurora Skys life will never be the same after her accident. Forced into becoming a lethal vampire hunter by the government, she has to decide which way her life will go. Will she protect her friends or become the hunter she is expected to be?

I'm Hooked!

High school sucks, no matter where you are, and if you're stuck in a small town in Alaska, buried in snow and constantly freezing your tush off, it's even worse. Who wouldn't want to leave, right? And no one wants to blow this popsicle stand more than Aurora Sky. She's got six months until she graduates and she is counting every second.

And then it happens. The terrible car accident that forever changes her life and makes her dreams of leaving Alaska go up in a puff of smoke. As the nice, secret-government-organization people inform her when she wakes up from her coma, Aurora is special. She has a unique blood type that is fatal to any vampire that drinks it, and that makes her useful. And because they were kind enough to pay for her surgeries and medical treatment instead of letting her die in peace, guess what? She's been recruited to work for them.

Say bye-bye, dreams of the future. Say hello, life as a vampire hunter.

Aurora is thrown right into the deep end of the vampire hunting pool. Orientation is the stuff of nightmares, and training isn't much better. And her first assignment? Yeah. Not so fun. But whether she wants to admit it or not, Aurora is good at her new job, and maybe, just maybe, it is what she was born to do.

Aurora Sky was a hit with me before I even read it. I mean, c'mon, a book about a teenage heroine with an unusual set of gifts she didn't ask for? Vampires and vampire hunters? Snappy dialogue and lots and lots of kickassery? How could I not like it? Actually, no, like doesn't express my feelings adequately. I FREAKING LOVED IT.

Young as she is, Aurora is a certified badass who could easily hold her own among her adult, urban fantasy heroine peers. She had her teenage moments, but circumstances forced her to grow up, and grow up fast, and I thought author Nikki Jefford did a marvelous job showing that transition. It was more than merely jumping from point A to point B. Aurora will never again be like the kids her age, and I really felt the emotional impact of that.

The rest of the cast is amazing too. Aurora's mentor, Dante, was pretty funny and had great sibling-type chemistry with Aurora. Valerie, the vampire informant, is a red-headed witch readers will love to hate, and Noel, another informant, looks like promising friend material. But if I had to pick one character that makes me perk up like a prairie dog every time his name is mentioned, it would have to be Fane. I seriously bookmarked every scene he was in, and I guarantee, when you read this book (notice I said when, not if - because you must read this book!) you will be tempted to do the same thing. That's how awesome Fane is.

Oh, and that little surprise tucked into the end? Genius! When I read that, I spouted a few OMG's and immediately loaded the second book onto my Kindle - and believe me, you will too! Lucky for you, book two is available and you can jump right into it.

There is SO MUCH I want to say about this book, trying to decided where to start is tricky… but I will start with Aurora. I think you can look at the kind of books I give high marks to and it’s pretty obvious I like characters with a good sense of humour. I loved Auroras inner voice and how strong her personality came through. She clearly has been through a rough patch, almost dying and finding about that the things that go bump in the night are not just scary stories, but she still has some sarcastic witty comments that I adored. Okay, I also love the way the story moves, I was able to get to know the characters and get a feel for situations going on, but it felt the story was constantly moving. The interaction between Aurora and Fane( SWOOOOON) is just so angsty. I like his attitude and I love the chemistry created when the two of them are together. The background Nikki Jefford creates makes vampires seem more tangible, the history of how they came to be feels possible in our world. I am eagerly awaiting book two in the series, so I sure hope it is released quickly. YOU NEED TO START THIS BOOK, like yesterday. Nikki Jefford breaks all the vampire stereotypes. Aurora Sky, a government engineered vampire hunters, is a sarcastic, strong, and sexy force to be reckoned with. Aurora Sky Vampire Hunter is going to grab your attention and not let go.
THIS BOOK IS NOT YOUNG ADULT, ITS NEW ADULT. There are some parts not for younger readers, so keep that in mind. The author recommends it for 18 and older.
The book is currently only .99 cents on amazon for your kindle so go get it!

There’s a new vampire hunter in Anchorage Alaska, and she’s fiercer than Buffy and Angel combined.

It’s been a while since I read about vampires and assassins that not only kick butts but also bring justice and revenge when needed. It’s been a while since I’ve watched Vampire Diaries which gave me my bloody dose of supernaturals.

And now, I got to meet Aurora Sky and boy, does she put the Buffy to shame.

After a freaky car accident that almost cost her life and resulted to multiple body organ replacements and bloody transfusions, Aurora found herself in a field of white nothingness. The next thing she knew , the agents who revived her informed her that she’s got a special blood , so rare and exquisite that could be used as a weapon against the undead.

Life hadn’t been easy with Aurora Sky, even before her tragic accident, what with her grumpy father and inconsiderate schoolmates. And now that she’s back , things just got even weirder, stranger and more confusing than everever. Her only friend abandoned her, her father chose to neglect his family , and had almost died a virgin . What could be more awful than that?

Apparently , being bitten by a rabid vampire wasn’t the case. Being a vampire hunter/assassin was even worse. And that’s not all. The worst part was, Aurora would never get to leave Anchorage Alaska ever, or else , she’d die.

Oh I couldn’t stop myself from reading this book . It’s like every page beckoned me to go further and farther on, whispered to me that if I won’t read the next chapter , I’d be missing a part of my life. Sounds cheesy and freaky, but bloodily true.

Aurora Sky is a joy to read. She may have been a weakling at first , but once she got the balls, she’s one spunky teenager with attitude and intensity. She’s better off without her so-called friend Denise and absentee father. Gaining new unpretentious friends suited her best and being able to kick vampires’ ass was definitely an added bonus.

Fane, oh Fane.. I knew from the first time Aurora couldn’t decide whether to like you or not, I knew what kind of creature you were, but damn, when I saw you walking Aurora home, well, I must say, I fell in love. I didn’t see that coming! I mean, I did not really see myself liking you at all!

Sorry Dante and Valerie, I don’t have any nice words for you, yet .

This is my second Nikki Jefford book and she’s become quite a favorite lately. I love the supernatural /paranormal world she created and the characters she introduced me to. I can’t wait to read more of her books!

I bought this book because it sounded interesting and amazon had the price right...free. As a 63-year-old woman, I don't find teenage love stories to be all that exciting. And once I got into the book, I was afraid it was going to be another Twilight. Fortunately, for me, the author did not just rip off another story. In fact, Nikki Jefford wrote a unique story.

Yes, there was a teenage girl. Yes, there were vampires over a hundred years old trolling a high school for young girls. BUT that's where the similarity between the two books ended. Aurora is a teen age high school senior who is in a car accident and killed. But because she has a unique blood type, Uncle Sam's secret workers take her to Elmendorf Air Force Base and bring her back. She is turned into a vampire hunter.

I liked the fact that Aurora made a LOT of foolish mistakes and became a pretty bratty teenager after she was recruited as a hunter. The author shows her skill at writing by the fact that Aurora learned little by little from her mistakes and we could see the life she was now forced to lead maturing her, but not too rapidly.

There were a few flaws with this book which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. One of the biggest flaws is that several characters are not fleshed (no pun intended) out. I expect that to happen in book 2 and the rest of the series. I also felt the ending was off and it just abruptly left us with no explanation. It wasn't a cliffhanger...it just abruptly ended, like the author did not know how or when to end the story. I also expect that to get better as the series continues. As it is, I will buy book 2 and see where it takes me. If it has the same flaws, that will be the end of the series for me. Life's too short at my age, to bother with books in the hopes that the author and a series will get better. We shall see.

At A Glance
I really enjoyed the concept and dark elements of this book but the execution was a little off.

The Good
With graduation looming, eighteen year old Aurora was finally going to get to leave Alaska. But almost dying in a car crash screwed that plan all up. Now the weird government agents who saved her life are telling Aurora that she works for them. Why? Because she has unique blood that incapacitates vampires. Doomed to stay in Alaska and let vampires chew on her neck then slay them, Aurora tries to assimilate to her new life by making friends with vampire groupies and dating one of the sexiest guys at school. But her knew boyfriend has some secrets of his own.

The Alaska setting was a nice change of pace. As well as the fact that the vampires weren't necessarily super strong. Sure, some of their senses are enhanced but they aren't amazing killing machines. The vampire hunters are just as strong as them. The concept of a vampire hunter having unique blood that once altered incapacitates vampires when consumed was very cool. But dang, being the undead's chew toy would really suck, right?

Aurora was an interesting character. I found her reaction and mannerisms after the crash quite intriguing. She pretty much went catatonic and became almost zombie-like. And can I just say, the way she dealt with her v-card had me cracking up. Aurora does slowly gain her fire and will to live back. I felt so bad for her most of the time because she had to deal with some creepy government agents who pretty much now control her life. They often threw her into situations with little training. It was all so frustrating. Dante made the whole situation a little better once he came into the picture. He is a fellow vampire hunter who is suppose to mentor Aurora. Though he may be a little laid-back when it comes to mentoring, his easygoing, fun personality was a great counterpart to Aurora's moodish personality.

But my favorite character was Fane. You think he is just a horny jerk in the beginning. Well, he is both of those things, but he is also really sweet and caring as well. I loved how Aurora and Fane's awkward relationship came to be. They didn't fall madly in love with each other at first sight. They just grew closer together after every meeting. It was nice to see Aurora start to really feel something for someone. Too bad Fane's secret could pull them apart. I saw it coming, but I was still heartbroken when everything was revealed and Aurora had to make some tough decisions.

Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter did a great job of mixing the dark with light. This book has some very horrific scenes as well as scenes that will have you rolling on the floor laughing. I think this series has potential. I for one would love to read book 2.

The Bad
I think the writing as a whole and the transitions were somewhat awkward. Some parts felt stale and some of the characters needed more fleshing out.

There was less vampire hunting than I expected. I wanted more action and less high school drama type stuff. Maybe next book.

The Snuggly
We get an awkward kinda sex scene then some hot and heavy petting between Aurora and Fane. This is between a YA and New Adult book to me.

Final Thoughts
I think the idea was very refreshing when it comes to the vampire genre. Fane made the whole book for me. I want to see more of him. I just wish the execution of the book was a little more cohesive. Recommended to vampire fans.

Quotes
"Fane took my arm and led me down the hill. "Here we go———back home."

"I don't want to go home. She'll want me to decorate and eat cookies."

Fane laughed. "Clearly you come from a dysfunctional family."

*****

The clammy lips on my neck felt like a suction slowly draining the life from me.

I was spinning out of control, lapsing into darkness. With a sudden jerk, I was released.

The thing, whatever it was, began to spasm beside me. It thrashed and gasped as though in agony. Its eyes widened until they looked like they would pop out of their sockets.

I lay spent across the floor, like a bloody human rag. I looked toward the mirror. "What did you do to me?"

I loved this whole new take on Vampires, it so different, and I really liked that. I am so anxious now for book 2, lol.

It’s like a YA version of Night Huntress, ok, not exactly, as its very different, but it sure was really good like those books. There were many twist in this book I did not see coming.

I also love how it takes place in Alaska, I spent over a week there before, (In July, when it stays daylight most of the time) and I have friends there, who I have learned a lot on the darkness and how they deal with it. It was fun reading parts where I have been.
We have the government who is trying to wipe out the murderous vampires, like some have rabies, kindof. With vampire hunters that they kinog create, like Aurora.

Aurora Sky is a great character, she ends up in a near fatal (or was it?) car crash, which has a special branch of the government stepping in to save her life, since she has a rare blood type that is perfect for their uses to turn her into the ultimate Vampire Hunter. She basically is their chew toy, as she has to allow them to bite her, so her doctored up blood gets into the, and causes them to be paralyzed for a short time, then she can finish them off.
Yeah, not cool, huh? She is pretty strong emotionally to be able to get through what she does.

I really liked the characters in this book, especially Fane and Dante, they both are great in their own way.
There are some hilarious parts, especially this one below, with Fane’s roommate (yes, this roommate is a vampire, but there are the rabies kind, the killer kind cuz they like to, and then the gentle, or at least nice unkilling kind)

“Joss would know the answer to your question about feeding better. I believe he’s set the record for the longest fast.”
A light bulb went off in my head. “Oh, like a tick.”
“Excuse me?” Joss said.
“Ticks can live for seven years without feeding.”
“Francesco,” Joss said testily. “She’s comparing me to an insect.”
Fane grinned. “Yes, I heard.”

I really can’t wait for book 2, it ended good, not a major cliffhanger, but kept you hanging a little bit. Not enough to make me mad though.
I highly recommend this book. It’s really different than the usual vampire books you see around. And it’s really well written.

5 out of 5 stars

Being a big fan of all things fangy (or is it fangie or fangish...whatever) I jumped at the chance to get my hands on Transfusion: Aurora Sky Vampire Hunter. Girl nearly dies, girl gets saved by Government Agents, girl turns into lethal vampire killing machine, girl falls in love with blood sucking hottie. What's not to jump at there? It's like a Buffy and Alias mash up. Yes, please!!

We meet Aurora in the midst of her ho-hum senior year where she has big dreams of moving away from Freezer Burn, USA and heading to Notre Dame for college. Dreams of slinking away from her ever- present mother and noticeably absent father; starting fresh, starting new, starting her own life.

Funny how all your plans change when you die. A super secret sect of the government picked Aurora out of the wreckage of a car accident, put her back together and injected her very rare blood with a vampire virus along with an antidote to keep her just human enough. Just human enough for them to train her to be a serial slayer.

Now, Aurora does not go from 0 to 60 in warp speed. She starts off confused, disbelieving and angry. But when she is thrown to the wolves (or vampires, as the case may be) it is catch on quick or die. Again.

Once Aurora begins to come to grips with how her life has changed, she becomes such a fun character. She has this dry sense of humor that I really enjoyed and the rebelliousness she finds was endearing. Her goals go from remarkably lofty to just plain pathetic. Her New Year's resolution is a short list of firsts: kill a vampire, get drunk, kiss a boy, lose virginity. And let me tell you, Jefford holds back nothing on the virginity scene. It is the most realistic take on a girl 'losing it' that I've ever read in a book. So any virgins out there that want to know what it's really like, read this book!

Fane is a conundrum. He's snarly and almost creepy one minute then the most gentlemanly sweetheart the next. There is a lot to question where Fane is concerned but it just makes him all the more alluring. There is definitely more than meets the eye with this guy.

There are heart pounding moments spread throughout the book and a ton of very interesting characters that we get brief glimpses of. Transfusion is the perfect set up to what will be a very fun and addictive series; complete with action, intrigue, angst and forbidden love. The ending will have you chomping (at the neck) for more, I know I am!

Aurora Sky started out really strong. It’s about a girl who gets into a fatal car crash, and is revived on a military base. They renewed a lot of her important organs, but there was a catch. They also implanted a virus in her body. Now Aurora must get mandatory shots in order to stay alive. They put this virus in Aurora’s body so that her blood will be fatal to any vampire who bites her and sucks her blood. But Aurora doesn’t want this life. It’s something that she can’t get out of, and her life slowly starts to spin out of control.
I was a big fan of the very beginning of Aurora Sky. I thought that it was well-written, the characters were interesting and relatable, and the idea of the book was eye-catching and fascinating. I find the concept of vampire hunters really interesting. This is something that the YA community really hasn’t gotten a chance to read about. We’ve read about vampires before, sure, but vampire hunters? That’s a new idea…and one that I like!
The character of Aurora got on my nerves a little bit as the story progressed. Obviously she had some major changes happen to her, and she spiraled out of control. All of a sudden she was drinking, having sex, being a disrespectful little brat, and…well, she was just really upset. I don’t like reading about characters who are so out of control and depressed. This is just a personal thing though. I know that there are a lot of people out there who enjoy these types of characters.
I was also a bit bothered by the amount of sex and romantic scenes included in the book. I would categorize Aurora Sky as a new adult book, so it was perfectly acceptable for that genre. However, I had to skim a lot of those scenes. I’m not opposed to romantic scenes, but it bugs me with high school students. I know they do stuff…I was a high school student once…but it’s a little uncomfortable for me to read about.
The story itself was a little predictable, but I actually ended up really liking the storyline. Nikki Jefford’s is a very strong writer, and I found myself really drawn to the words that she created. I was also a BIG fan of Fane, the leading male character. He was SO gorgeous! I would recommend the book simply for him! You have to read about him!
Overall, I thought that it was a great first book in the Vampire Hunter’s series. I didn’t fall head over heels in love with it, but it kept me interested. Again, this is a New Adult book, so there are some scenes maybe not so appropriate for the younger crowd. Other than that, I would recommend that fans of paranormal reads give this one a chance!

What I liked: The origin or the vampires and how they came about was different from what I had expected. Honestly, I hadn't even expected any form of an explanation about where vampires came from so that was an interesting tidbit to have. The story was well paced, and while I had a few hangups about the overall plot of the story it was interesting and I really enjoyed it. Aurora was a good character to follow, although I didn't always understand her actions in the book. I feel like she didn't show much about how all of this is affecting her either, from what I was able to gather Aurora always had a bad relationship with her parents. I couldn't get why, so that remains a mystery to me. How Aurora coped with being told she was a vampire hunter actually seemed reasonable. She was in shock, she wanted to pretend that it never happened and that it wasn't real. I get it, and it made part of the story interesting.

What I didn't like: The beginning was really weird. Specificially where Aurora was first learning about how she is now a vampire hunter against her own free will. Plus, Aurora is eighteen which means she is no longer considered a minor and her mom has no say in being able to sign Aurora over. Seventeen would have been a little more believable for her mom having the right to do that, but at eighteen no. Also, I always have a problem with books where the main character say that she'll never hook up with [insert name of that guy here] for whatever reason and then not much later you realize that she has a thing for him and then when they hook up it moves really quickly. It just really bugs me because it sort of seems forced, especially in this book. Continuing slightly in that vein, I didn't even get the chance to know Denise before she was cast aside. She was supposed to be Aurora's friend and if she took so much interest in Aurora's life before the beginning of the book, I seriously don't understand the sudden cold shoulder.

Overall Review: This was a really interesting start ot the series, although I have no idea where this story could go after this. I mean, everything seemed wrapped up rather neatly by the end except for a few last minute additions to the story. Overall, I thought the story was satisfying but it wasn't something that wow'd me. I am curious enough to continue on with the story though to see what happens in the next few books with Aurora, should be interesting!

Recommend?: Sure, why not! If you're a fan of vampires you might want to try out the first book to see how you like it!

ABR's original Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter by Nikki Jefford is a the first volume in a series by the same name about a young adult who abruptly becomes drafted by a secret government agency fighting vampires when she almost dies in a car crash. Quickly, Aurora must learn how to deal with her feelings about her near death experience and balance a new life that involves normal high school and secretly fighting vampires.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was a unique take on vampires and a vampire hunting. Vampirism was transformed into a medical condition rather than a random supernatural event that is difficult to explain. And therefore, the vampire hunting was also unique and having to do with their blood type rather than this fighting abilities, which I suppose they have to develop anyway. The government involvement was well done. It would have been nice to know more about it, but the “hush-hush” secret government agency aura was present whenever the agents were around. The vampire hunting was exciting with a lot of action and emotions. Most of the characters were well-developed. Even if a character wasn’t present much in the story, it was possible to imagine that there was more to him or her. The romantic aspect of the story was complicated and believable and I really enjoyed the twist even though I expected it. The one aspect of this novel that I didn’t like was how it felt like the end was so abrupt. As it’s a series I can understand that to some extent, but I wanted more closure.

The narration by Em Eldridge was good. I found that Aurora’s voice was a little too whiney for me, but I thought everyone else sounded appropriate. The production quality was good. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes young adult fiction and a good vampire story with a science fiction twist. There is a lot of action and emotional events and I’m looking forward to the next novels in the series.

I love the note under the blurb. Beware reader folk, this book has blood sucking!

I read this book December 2013 and since getting into book reviewing, I managed to beg demand convince ask the author for the next books in the series. And she pulled through! So it only stands to reason that I'm anxious to do her proud for entrusting me with this entire series. And you can't say 'this series' without wanting to add 'fabulous' in the middle. They really are.

I wrote this very small bite sized review of the first book:

This was surprisingly good. I liked Aurora, even with her really cheesy name and the characters were pretty well developed, interesting and likeable. My only issue with it was how quickly she recovered at the end. It was way too suddenly and left a lot of her actual bodily wounds healing out. Anyway it was decent for a freebie and I'm intrigued enough to read the next one. Plus the cliffhanger at the end was class.

Very enjoyable book, couldn't put it down and for that it gets five out of five stars from me.

To expand on it, I'd say it is chock full of interesting, complex characters, a concept that has so many possibilities and brings an eerie, mysterious twist to the vampire genre, where things are not what they seem. You sense it in this book, but since reading the others in the series, I now understand the hidden meanings and hints in this book.

It was hard to read on from this book after a long gap but I picked up quickly where I left off. I plan to read them again, back to back because I just love the characters so damn much.

And yes, again, I will happily say this book gets five out of five moons/ stars/ comets/ rainbows from me.

Nikki Jefford just become on of my new favorite authors!! I love your writing
style. Bravo on the first book success in this series. I loved it from the
beginning and was hard pressed when I had to lay the book down to move about. I
love Aurora and Noel as the main female characters. I don't like all them mind
you... hate is such a strong word that I don't use... but i want you to
understand I so dislike the agents and her dad.

"In the event of a catastrophe, one thing is sure. Your
life ends on a curse."

At first I thought Aurora would be like the *Six Million Dollar Man* but soon
learned she isn't or either she needed to train to be that strong. I thought the
agents would be fun like the *Men In Black* but the were the total opposite. I
mean agent Melcher was a piece of shit but Crist took it too another level by
being a truly cold bitch.

Bravo Nikki!! As you see you have succeeded in stirring all my emotions.
:)

Fane knew it, he knew she had died. I knew it with the enhanced hearing and
the lose of her mirrored reflection. Does her mom know or is she oblivious? I
think she is just so happy to have her daughter alive she agreed without really
understanding.

"They should have never revived me. They should have let
me die in peace."

This book tells you story of before Aurora and then the after
Aurora. We see her life before halt to existence, really it died with her. We
watch as her new life takes form and grows in strength with a newness I want to
see grow. There is no turning back for me now, I must read the next book. I just
hope I can get the whispersync on it to help me do other stuff. ;) Plus my vision is a wee blurry.

This book sucked. I’m sorry, its mean but I can’t think of any other way to say it. The romance was written terribly and was so choppy I could barely keep up with it. She liked so many people you couldn’t tell who she truly cared about or who she was using. It had sooooo much more telling than showing. It was told as matter of fact as possible and it came off as boring to me. The story line moved too fast to absorb. It felt like lazy writing to me cause the author didn’t really get emotional with her MC so I couldn’t really tell how she felt. It felt robotic to me.

I found Aurora quite weak and she seemed to put too much value on what others thought of her. The story jumped from friendship to friendship so fast with no real transitions. She let her best friend slip through her fingers with no attempt to salvage it. She came off as too whiny. I felt that her emotions didn’t match her actions. And the supporting characters had no depth. It was all very inconsistent and as such, unbelievable throughout.

The parents seemed thrown in as an afterthought, not adding much to the story line except in the beginning. I would have thought they would have tried harder to be a part of her life since she almost lost it. The dad leaving was just thrown in for shock value.

I just…really didn’t like this book and I won’t be reading any more in this series. I’d love to give the author another shot in a different series I think, just to see if it was the story or the writing that killed it for me.

This book is free but I received it from Netgalley for an honest review.
