A Father's Fight

Rate this book
Life changes in the span of a heartbeat—one tiny heartbeat…

Blake

Layla taught me what it meant to truly love another person. I’d do anything for her.

But nothing prepared me for the lengths I’d go to for my baby.

Which is why I’m going to go home and deal with my family issues once and for all. I can’t move forward without resolving my past.

Running from the fight is not an option. Especially when I’m so close to having everything I never knew I wanted in my life…

Layla

At this stage in my pregnancy, the only thing I should be doing is preparing for the arrival of our baby.

Too bad someone from my past—someone who was there eighteen years ago when the course of my life was irrevocably altered—won’t let me relax.

So, while Blake is confronting his issues, I’ll do the same.

And when we’re done, maybe we can finally settle into the happily ever after we both so richly deserve…

A Father’s Fight, book 5 in the Fighting series, is an emotional, angsty, contemporary, steamy, sports/MMA romance novella with a guaranteed HEA (or rather, a continued HEA). Download today to revisit Blake and Layla.

Before I started this one, I re-read Fighting to Forgive and I just fell for Blake and Layla ALL OVER AGAIN. I'm sooo GLAD that this novella was written. Blake is the definition of FILF which is basically the opposite of MILF but in this case a scrumptious DAD. He makes such a perfect dad, husband, and friend .. I absolutely adore this guy. He protects his own and without a doubt is my favorite type of alpha male. This is one of my favourite series and each book is AMAZING, if I was to say my favourite fighter series? This would definitely score HIGH on that list!

A Father’s Fight was one of those genuine reads where you can’t stop but turn the page and awe at those precious moments in life.

With Blake and Layla newly engaged and expecting a baby on the way, you’d think they’d be clear of their worries. Boy, are they so wrong!

Author J.B. Salsbury doesn’t throw in any over the top gimmicks and plot devices in this fifth installment. It’s pretty stripped down to basic human values of love, family, forgiveness, sacrifice, and the lengths you will go to protect them.

Both Blake and Layla go though their own share of personal plights and confrontations throughout this read. For Layla, it’s what happened 18 years ago that led to the birth of her daughter, Axelle Rose. And for Blake, it’s about going back to the homefront and making what was broken, right.

★★★★★★★

A Father’s Fight, was by far, one of the more touching reads from the Fighting series. Sometimes even if it’s hard or you try hard to forget, you still need to confront scars of your past to pave way toward your future. You can stumble, you can fall, you can make mistakes, or you can triumph.

“Everything life throws affects who we become. Different experiences wouldn’t have brought me to where I am today.”

“There are periods where we soar and some where we plummet, but as long as we hold fast to what matters, fight for the things that count, we die happy knowing we did our best to battle for what matters most.”

“We’ve all made mistakes, screwed up in varying degrees, but we can’t allow our mistakes to define our future. We have to look ahead, focus on that next step in the right direction, and fight hard to get what we want, even if that feels like throwing punches to the wind. At least we fight, and if we go down, we go down swinging.”

But most importantly, NEVER give up that fire, that fight in you. And ALWAYS safeguard with all you have, those you value most.

I adore JB Salsbury's Fighting series and Blake and Layla's novella once again proves why she is one of my favorite writers.

"Love is what makes the pain of the fight so worth it."

This story is filled with warmth, love, family, strength and of course, the sexy Blake and his gorgeous Mouse. A Father's Fight is about all these things and much more. Blake and Layla again face tremendous obstacles and their pasts which threaten to interfere into the blissful life they have built together. Blake will do whatever it takes to keep his Mouse safe and to guard his new family no matter what. He is a fighter, for sure, and his strength of character is the glue that holds this story together.

I fell in love with Blake even more after reading A Father's Fight! He is sexy, strong, tough and gentle all at the same time. I absolutely loved the steam factor in this one and did not want the story to end! As with all of the books in this series, I craved more when I finished this story and cannot wait for more from the amazingly talented JB Salsbury.

Flove this series..can't wait!! Full review for blog tour!! Mmmmm Blake and Mouse heat the kindle screen again...love them, even teared up!

Full Review

Blake and Mouse have not had an easy road to their happily ever after. They are finally cruising along, baby coming, daughter doing great when the past comes and puts a huge obstacle in their path. Not just one of them, but both of them have to deal with the past that created who they are today, and forgive the monsters that have held them for so long.

Loving this series and every book that has come from it, I was SO excited to get my hands on this glimpse into all of their lives again. Blake and his possessive ways crack me up, when Layla’s regular doctor is not available for an OB appt and he freaks out and scares the young male doctor that enters the room, into retreating and having a female nurse take it from there. LOVE it, it’s that kind of male that screams DAWN READ ME!

Watching them become a family, including the daughter of his heart and knowing that Blake’s life is now looking at him from three different sets of eyes, sent me into an emotional tailspin, even tearing me up! I know…right? This series has a way of stripping down to the heart of each of it’s leads and leaving you totally engaged, invested and in love. I hope there is more…I will be anxiously waiting!

A Father's Fight is a great novella from JB Salsbury. This book gives us a little more insight as to how Blake and Layla's life has been since their HEA. Things have been great, but they haven't been perfect for the couple. Layla is receiving mysterious phone calls and Blake is preoccupied with an email and some family drama. Neither one of them can ignore their pasts. But will they be able to put their pasts behind them in order to get their well deserved ending???

I'm just going to keep this short and sweet. I really enjoyed A Father's Fight. I loved getting to see more of Blake and Layla and the dual pov's. This book was heartwarming, well written, and had some great mystery surrounding it. Questions will be answered and lives will be changed.....Overall, this was a quick, sexy read with plenty of steam. Fans of this series will not be disappointed!

"We’ve all made mistakes, screwed up in varying degrees, but we can’t allow our mistakes to define our future. We have to look ahead, focus on that next step in the right direction, and fight hard to get what we want, even if that feels like throwing punches to the wind."

A Father's Fight is part two of Blake and Layla's story. We met Blake and Layla in Book 2 of the Fighting Series. Blake was a damaged playboy who meets Layla and falls fast and hard. Layla is a single mom who has overcome many adversities to become a strong spunky woman! I enjoyed reading about these two and was really looking forward to this follow up.

A Father's Fight focuses on tying up the loose ends from their past. Blake is faced with mending past pains with his parents. Layla is still trying to cope with her abusive past. Both Blake and Layla love each other madly. Now that Layla is pregnant with his child, Blake loves her even more.

"Her warm little body, ripe with my growing baby, does weird shit to my chest. Having nine months to figure out what that is, I’ve come to identify it as a mix of arousal and worship, and I don’t know what to do first, make love to her or make a damn sacrifice in her honor."

description

The dialogue between Blake and Layla is what drove this story. The love between these two is tender and beautiful. After reading the heartbreak in book 2, it was certainly a treat to find out there is a HEA for these two.

However, the conflict in this book was minuscule compared to the previous stories. There was little time spent at the gym. (Which lets be honest, one of the best elements of reading a series about hot fighters is reading about hot fighters fighting!) What I wanted is a bit more of this....

description

UMM YUMM!

Hot bodies aside, the story would have been much more enjoyable if the plot had been more complex. Although, I loved reading more of Layla and Blake and it was delightful to read more about Axel (Layla's daughter) and Brae (Blake's brother). As I was reading, I kept waiting for the story to develop more! I certainly was rooting for Layla and Blake to resolve their past hurts but honestly I was expecting more. After all, I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!

description

Still, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the series. Layla and Blake are an amazing couple and it was nice to catch up with them. But compared to her previous books, this one felt like it could have been a novella as opposed to a full novel. What was good: the love story, the steam, and the healing. What I missed: more action, more fighting, and more plot development. Still a good read!

"Amazing how quick life can change. There are periods where we soar and some where we plummet, but as long as we hold fast to what matters, fight for the things that count, we die happy knowing we did our best to battle for what matters most."

First I want to THANK JB for sending me the ARC for this book! It is an Honor to call you my Friend!

My review, my review huh I don't know where to start on this beautifully written novella on Blake and Layla! First, WOOHOO more Blake and Layla, Thank You! I had forgotten how fiercely these two love each other. How much they have fought to be together. "To have peace, you must go to war" and it seems these two will be fighting again, yet healing at the same time. This book will make you laugh ( Of course is Blake and add Braeden and it's a hoot) cry, bawl, hurt. So many feels with this one. I don't want to give too much away but if you LOVE JB's writing and books this does not in any way disappoint!!! It's PERFECT! JB keep on writing and I will read anything you publish!!! Love You BIG!!

Favorite quotes from the book:
Blake to unborn baby " My throat gets tight as if I'm carrying a ten-pound weight inside it. 'I love you. I'll always love you. I'll be the first and the last man who'll love you 'til his dying breath. You hear that, baby? First and the last. Layla's breath hitches in her throat, and I take the moment to close my eyes and settle into the feeling. Love.Unconditional love in all its fucking glory and all around me. With that, I can face insurmountable obstacles, and a half-day visit with my parents tops that list."

Blake: "Everything life throws affects who we become. Different experiences wouldn't have brought me to where I am today. I owe everything I have to the fact that my dad didn't make things easy on me. Rather than give him forgiveness, he deserves my gratitude."

Blake: "Love is makes the pain of the fight so worth it"

Blake: "Amazing how quick life can change. There are periods where we soar and some where we plummet, but as long as we hold fast to what matters, fight for the things that count, we die happy knowing we did our best to battle for what matters most."

Blake:"On my way back to Layla's room, it hits me. Trip, The General, and I have a lot more in common than I ever would've thought. We've all made mistakes, screwed up in varying degrees, but we can't allow our mistakes to define our future. We have to look ahead, focus on that next step in the right direction, and fight hard to get what we want, even if that feels like throwing punches to the wind. At least we fight, and if we go down, we go down swinging."

“I’d walk through hell and back if it meant the rest of the life with you.”

4 ‘Happily Ever After’ stars!

I loved this novella. Essentially an epilogue to Fighting to Forgive, this book takes us right back to ex-manwhore and now dedicated family man, Blake, his very pregnant fiancée, Layla, and their fight for their happy ever after.

Blake and Layla both had a lot of personal issues to overcome in order to be together, and this book sees the demons from their pasts resurfacing to threaten their newfound happiness. They are issues that were raised in their book and though they were dealt with, there wasn’t complete resolution, and that is what this book provides – without unnecessary angst and drama in their relationship, which I loved! Blake and Layla are together and committed, and though they are both going through some pretty heavy emotional issues, they never let it impact on their relationship and they are still crazy in love and stronger than ever.

“You’re my true love. My first and only true love, Blake”
He brings my hand to his lips and slides soft kisses against my skin.
“First…and last.”

This book is a story of two people finally dealing with the past in order to move forward, and it’s really beautifully done. It’s super-hot, emotional and so freaking swoony, and I loved the opportunity to catch up with this couple as they embrace the HEA that they so desperately deserve.

“Amazing how quick life can change. There are periods where we soar and some where we plummet, but as long as we hold fast to what matters, fight for the things that count, we die happy knowing we did our best to battle for what matters most.”

As a bonus, I absolutely loved getting to know Blake’s brother, Braeden better. He is freaking hilarious and so intriguing! I can’t wait for his book.

I really enjoyed this novella – a must-read for fans of the series!

4.5 Heartwarming and Humorous stars!

We left Layla and Blake with one of my all time favorite epilogues. What could make that ending more perfect? Well luckily for us JB Salsbury was not done with their story because A Father’s Fight made me fall even more in love with Blake Daniels.

From the moment I picked up this book with the great 1990’s references I could not put it down. I didn’t feel like there was anything missing from Fighting to Forgive where I first fell in love with Layla and Blake, but with the addition to this story we truly get the rest of their story.

When life finally starts smelling like roses, there’s always something that comes along to drop a big fat fucking shit on my damn bouquet.

This story takes place at the end of Layla’s pregnancy; even 9 months along and ready to pop we still get the sexy scenes between these two characters. Although with as much as I love their chemistry, it’s the true love they have for each other throughout the book that I fell in love with. There is never a doubt that Blake thinks the world of Layla and Axelle and would do anything for his girls. That also holds true for Layla’s love and devotion for Blake.

“I’d walk through hell and back if it meant the rest of the life with you.”

This story really gets to the painful pasts of both Layla and Blake. Layla’s still struggling with her demons of what her ex told her and when it comes back to haunt her, she worries the information is going to put Blake on a downward spiral. Blake is trying to keep this pain and any other stress from his very pregnant fiancé, but with a cryptic e-mail he receives he is at a loss for what to do. Not only is this information weighing on him, he also has to confront his past with his parents.

A Father’s Fight has such a great balance of angst and humor. With the serious topics that revolve around these characters, I’m so happy we still get the Blake we fell in love with in the very first book of the series. There is a scene in the OB office that had me laughing out loud!

While this book isn’t as long as the other books, I don't feel anything is missing. It’s a dual POV story which gives us a true picture of the characters we wouldn’t have had otherwise. The angst is also spread throughout the book, allowing the flow of the story to be perfect. And thank goodness no cliffhanger!

Love is what makes the pain of the fight so worth it.

I honestly hope this series never ends, because with each book there are more character’s stories I need. Please bring us Mason and Killian’s stories… And a bit more of Blake’s brother Braeden would not be frowned upon.

"Love is what makes the pain of the fight so worth it."

At the heart of JB Salsbury's Fighting series is the idea that regardless of the pain, heartache, or knockdowns, the fight continues, and it's always worth the bumps and bruises along the way as long as when everything is said and done, everything that was fought for comes to fruition.

In Blake and Layla's follow-up novella, A Father's Fight, the past rears its ugly head again, just when everything in their lives is finally coming together. They've been through hell, but they also fought like hell to outrun it, never allowing it to take the fight completely out of them despite how hard it tried. Now, Blake and Layla are expecting their first child together and the fears and stress that comes with having a baby is compounded by the scars of the past refusing to lay dormant. But this is a fight both Blake and Layla refuse to surrender to because there's too much at risk...too much good to hold on to, and so they both confront their issues head on, reveling in the fact that they're stronger now because of each other and the bond they've formed with their love and commitment to one another. Their happiness is worth fighting for and Blake and Layla's willingness to confront everything head on speaks volumes to the type of fighters they are.

A Father's Fight sends a great message to readers about what fathers/parents are willing to do for their children regardless of blood, distance, or time. Blake's upbringing left him feeling battered and unloved, but in retrospect, it also gave him a fighter's heart...the desire to crawl through hell and back and make it, which is a valuable lesson he can now pass on to his children with pride.

Fight hard always because in the end, no one can take the fight from you as long as you're unwilling to give it to them.

I absolutely loved this book!

It had been a while since I had read about Blake and Layla, but the minute I opened this book I was right back where I had left them. I remembered it all.

Blake and Layla are having a baby and couldn't be happier, but before they bask in that happiness, they both have old wounds that need re-opening and dealing with. However painful. Both of their struggles are hard, and watching the two of them struggle through whilst they deal with them, sometimes had me close to tears.
"Love is what makes the pain of the fight so worth it."

There were some major ups and downs in this book, but ultimately, for a novella, it wasn't too much. It was of course a short read, but I feel like we got all to feel all of the necessary emotions, that accompany the plot of the story, without it having to feel rushed and forced.

A major player for me in this book was Braeden, Blake's brother. I can't recall whether we've met him much beforehand (we probably have and I forgot.. eek) but he was very apparant in this book and I loved his character. I'm hoping that we'll be given the chance to get a closer look in to his life, in a future book.

On the whole, this was a great book, one that I zoomed through and loved every part of.
"Your choices were taken away from you, Mouse. I want you to have them back. You want to wear white; you fucking do it and own it. Throw a big fat middle finger to the past, and take control of your future."

I've read all five books in the series and I enjoyed everyone of them. This is the continuation of Fighting To Forgive, with Layla "The Mouse" and Blake "The Snake's" story. They have forgiven each other, but the past still haunts them.

 photo AFathersFight-Tsr1_zpsa89a4a88.jpg

Layla has been through hell and back. What she had to endure to bring Axelle in to this world, was admirable. It didn't matter how she was conceived, all she wanted was to raise a healthy baby and to not have her experience what she did back in high school. The past haunts her even in her dreams. She has nightmares that scares her to death. When this happens, all she wants to do is to crawl and hide in Blake's arms. Where she feels safe and protected.

 photo AFathersFightTsr-2_zps93fb27b1.jpg

Blake is one over protective fiance. He is an MMA fighter and does not take any nonsense from anyone. He will protect his family until his last breath. He went to jail for protecting Layla from her past and he will do it again with no hesitations. I loved how he treated Axelle, as if she was his own blood. He's what every woman's dream husband should be. He had me swooning by how he can be aggressive and dominating in bed, but could be so gentle at the same time.

 photo AFathersFightTsr-3_zps72ab3ab0.jpg

When loving someone you give the freedom of who they want to be. You let them decide for themselves. Right or wrong, you'll be right by your loved one's side. No matter what the consequences might be, you would sacrifice everything just to have that kind of love, to the point where the air that you breathe is through your special someone. You're each other's oxygen. And when that one oxygen runs out, there's no other reason for the other to live. No reason to breathe. That's how I felt, what Blake and Layla had.

Will they both be able to move forward, with the obstacles to fight through? To have the future that comes with a tiny heartbeat? You will not be disappointed, The Fighting Series, is a MUST READ.

I'm a fan of this series since book 1. All these characters have a special place in my heart. I love that we get a bit more of Blake. I really liked his character, loved the way he cares so much about Layla and axel. And of course he doesn't disappoint in this book either. Now I have to say this book brought me to happy tears when Layla is giving birth. As a mom I know the feeling of giving birth to a baby and Blake made that scene even more emotional loved it jamie!

Now don't kill me jamie but this book wasn't personally for me one of my favorites. I did enjoy parts of it but other parts I don't know I kinda got a bit annoyed. Sorry jamie! I love your books but this one didn't do it for me personally. I think what annoyed me was Layla. I'm not a fan of her being with Blake because of her age. But I was able to like her in the second book. But in this one I just couldn't connect with her. I found her a bit annoying.

Moving on I loved, loved Blakes brother. I really hope we get a book with his story. I want to know more about him. I really enjoyed reading about the general. It now makes sense to me why he was the way he was with Blake. Not okay but I get it. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of cam you know that's my main dude in this series! All in all good book and it completes Blake perfectly! Can't wait for the next one Jamie.

I loved the second book of Layla and Blake as much as the first. As a couple they show us just how strong their bond is. This is reflected in and out of the bedroom.

Blake’s alpha ways didn’t disappoint. He was strong and demanding when he needed to be but sweet and sensitive when he had to be. Blake made me laugh and cry. I truly love the man and the father he turned into.

Layla has proven how strong she is. Now that she is in a caring, loving relationship she is able shine. She also proves how stealthy she can be when she needs to be. The prologue of the book is difficult to read but sets the tone for her story.

I loved reconnecting with Axelle, Killer, Jonah and the other fighters in the group. I also enjoyed reading about some new characters that hopefully will get a book of their own. There are also a few storylines that could warrant another book about Blake and Layla too.

I really enjoyed this novella. It packed a punch. Layla and Blake are extremely close to expecting their first child together. It's down to the wire.

The book begins eighteen years ago giving us a peek of Layla's pov the night Axelle was conceived. Things may not be exactly the way Stew portrayed them. Layla is in over her head when a blast from the past desperately wants to talk to her about that night.

Blake is going through his own issues. He's worried he's going to turn out like his own dad. But his brother, Braeden, convinces Blake to take a trip home because of some important news. Are Blake's parents ready to make amends?

A Father's Fight was a great addition to the series. It was interesting and entertaining and definitely emotional. I hope Killian and Axelle's story is next and I'm curious to see how things with Trip will play out. Well done!

I just finished A Father's Fight and I LOVED it... Blake and Layla's story was a must to be told. JB has done it again, her stories are amazingly written and beautiful. This story was funny , sweet, sexy and I got to get my FIX of all the characters. This story has so much emotion and LOVE that it was exactly what we needed. I hope JB keeps writing she is PURE talent and this is one AUTHOR I will NEVER stop reading .... I recommend this book and series to everyone I talk to.

I just can't get enough of these Vegas fighter boys. I think JB needs to have open enrollment day down at the UFL Training Center. Bring in some more dirty talking talent so this series keeps going and going and going.

Blake, where do I begin? I think he finally grows up in this book. We don't get as much “dirty mouth” Blake as we do “protector and soon to be father” Blake. Case ‘n’ point...the doctor visit....

Dr. Cole looks amused by Blake's outburst, which I know will only piss Blake off more. “I've been studying obstetrics and gynecology for over -”
“Yeah? Me too, but I didn't get a fancy degree. You go to school for what? Ten years to study p*ssy...as a dude? Yeah...no. You're not getting your fingers or eyes anywhere near my woman.”

And then we finally get to the labor and delivery room which is what most of JB's readers wanted to witness. There was nothing better than watching Blake become a father.

“God, Mouse...” His voice cracks, and I catch sight of a single tear as it falls down his cheek. He makes no attempt to wipe it away, wearing the love for his spoiler like a badge of honor.

No way am I giving you that spoiler......

A Father's Fight was funny (we are talking about Blake here), emotional and left me with more questions than answers, which is a good thing because that means I will get my answers in the books to come. Thank you, JB, for giving us a little more of Blake. I give this book a not surprising 5 stars. ~ Stacey, 5 stars

Blake and Layla… God, I love this couple. Hard and soft, yet perfect for each other. They’ve been through hell and back, but it’s time for them to realize their happily ever after. Right?

Sh*t, of course the Fates aren’t going to make it easy on them! Layla is pregnant and Blake is in over-protective overdrive. Each trying to make decisions without upsetting the other, not realizing their lack of communication is hurting, not helping. When both their pasts threaten to harm their future, will they finally work together to ensure they make it through to the happily ever after part?

This book made me happy! I loved revisiting old friends—Blake and Layla, but also the rest of their “family” Axelle, Eve, Raven, Gia, Jonah, Rex, Cam, and Killian. I can’t wait for the next one! Oh, and wait until you find out the baby’s name—it’s PERFECT, like the rest of the book. ~ Missy, 5 stars

Blake "The Snake" Daniels from JB Salsbury's Fighting Series has been my favorite fighter ever since I read his book back in 2013. A Father's Fight is the continuation of his and Layla's story from Fighting to Forget.

We meet up with the couple once again when Layla is 8 1/2 months pregnant. Blake's brother, Lois in town to visit, but he's got some news to deliver to Blake that he doesn't want to hear. Layla's past also comes a-knockin' on the door and brings with it a shocking truth.

As I've come to expect from Ms. Salsbury, this story is told with heart, humor and a boatload of emo-tion. I loved getting a glimpse back into these characters lives and I knew Blake would be awesome in the delivery room.

I don't recommend you read this novella as a standalone. It's part of the series, but could be read after book two, and also sets the stage for future works from JB. This little novella, like Blake, packs a lotta punch. A fabulous addition to a fabulous series. ~ Erin, 4 1/2 Stars
