Emergency Room doctor Brian James stared down at the lifeless body on the stretcher. It seemed to be just another unfortunate death in the hospital, but for Brian it was a corpse that was about to send him spiraling into a world of deadly assassins, cryptic cults, and otherworldly beings. In a desperate struggle to stay alive and uncover the secrets of a hidden civilization, Brian is thrust into an uneasy alliance with the beautiful and mysterious Aella. Together they must use science, determination, and clues buried within the Dead Sea Scrolls to uncover a centuries-old secret before they become the expert assassin’s next victims.
Ashley Jensen is a professional writer and former managing editor of three professional magazines. She wrote THE WATCHERS (November 2014) and is currently working on the second book of the series. Ashley enjoys the outdoors and is frequently hiking and backpacking. She is a former rock-climbing instructor, fanatic researcher, and a marathoner. In fact, she's probably out running right now.
Brian is an emergency room Dr. who finds himself pulled into a world he didn't know existed. He treats a patient who has been impaled with a chair leg and his eyes are opened to unexplained mystery. He becomes the hunted from a secret society who fear discovery.
This book is full of action. It was easy to be pulled into the story. I personally love to read books where the main character has a sarcastic personality. Brian is so full of sarcasm that I found myself snickering at his snide comebacks and unconventional wit.
The biggest draw for me was the society of "Watchers". Ashley Jensen uses one of my favorite paranormal/mythological/biblical creatures, the Nephilim. There are many fun and thought provoking theories about them, and Ashley has created her own version and woven it into her story.
She has also taken elements from the medical field. I thought it interesting that I was reading about telomeres just before I started reading this book. I loved linking my new knowledge to Ashley's research. It was actually kind of cool.
I will admit that I personally know Ashley. She lives in my neighborhood and when I found out she had written a book, I knew that I needed to support her in her efforts. I am so happy that I liked her book. (HUGE sigh of relief!) It makes reviewing it so much easier.
The book has an intricate, yet easy to follow plot. The main characters are opposites. Aella is too literal, logical, and stuffy. Brian is quick to humor, easy going, and like I mentioned before, sarcastic. The blend of personality quirks added a lot to the story. It really made it enjoyable to get to know the characters and see how the related to each other and situations.
The book does contain violence, innuendo, and swearing.
I received my copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
If you have not yet read nor put this book on your 'To Read' list DO IT NOW! This is a wonderfully fluid read, lots of plot, characters and main character sarcasm to get you through Summer heat, Fall depression and anything else you've got bogging you down!
Doctor Brian is an unwitting hero that I couldn't help but root for. His plunge into the world of secret societies is action-packed and dramatic. I was caught in the whirlwind of the madness surrounding him and was glued to the page. Would highly recommend!

So I got this book for my birthday and I honestly hadn't heard much about it, but now I can say that it was a great book, amazingly written, and very creative. :) I totally recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to read. It was awesome!
I won a copy of The Watchers by Ashley Jensen, in a Goodreads Giveaway. Score!
I am continuously amazed at the level of talent the authors I find through Goodreads and Indie View demonstrate. The quality of the books I have read from indie authors is just incredible. How the big publishing houses ignore all this talent is beyond me. Ashley Jensen is one of those authors to whom I refer.
The Watchers is a very entertaining work. I believe it is the first in The Dead Sea Trilogy. The author has her work cut out for herself to equal or top this story. The main character, Aella, is an impressive heroine, though not necessarily in the classic tradition. Think Sheena meets Temperence Brennan, great fighting skills, brilliant mind, not so much on the people skills. A truly "flawed" leading lady, who many would label as a "bad guy", but is the only one who can solve the problem at hand. A great conflict.
There are great action sequences, Bible references, mythological parallels and cultural stereotypes. No sex, but you'll have to read the book to find out why. The way The Watchers developed, I expect there will more of Aella's backstory shared in following installments. I look forward to this as she is quite the interesting character.
Ashley Jensen does a great job of blending characters who inhabit a spiritual realm with people in the mundane world. It is at times hilarious, witnessing the "culture-clash". There is a lot going on in this first book to hold a readers interest. It took me less than 24 hours to finish.
If you are in the mood for a different kind of action/adventure story. One with a female heroine. The Watchers by Ashley Jensen should fill the bill admirably. Enjoy!
