Growing up, goody-two-shoes Kirra Jacobs and troublemaker Reef McKenna were always at odds. Now paired together on Yancey's search-and-rescue canine unit, they begin to put aside old arguments as they come to see each other in a different light. Then a call comes in from the Iditarod that will push them to their limits.
Kirra's uncle, a musher in the race, has disappeared. Kirra and Reef quickly track the man, but what they discover is harrowing. Frank's daughter has been kidnapped. In order to save her, the man must use his knowledge as a mechanical engineer to do the kidnapper's bidding or she will die. Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl's life, but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen.

This book has been available to me for almost 4 months now. As much as I was looking forward to reading it, though, I was also putting it off. I wanted to read another book about this family, but I wasn't quite ready for the series to end. I also wasn't sure how I would like the last book being about Rafe since he definitely wasn't my favorite character. He grew on me, though, and I liked seeing how he changed and grew over time-- how Kirra did the same-- and how they grew together.
One thing that really stuck out to me: Reef and Kirra had known each other practically their entire lives, but God didn't bring them together right away. Even though God may have two people "picked out" for each other, they still aren't right for each other until the time is right and they are where they need to be and following God's will. And this goes for so many other areas of our lives as well. Just because something may be right and even right for us, doesn't mean we shouldn't wait on God's timing.
What a fantastic finale to a great series! I highly recommend it! :)
Many years ago I was walking my dog in the park and a very pretty woman came up to me and said hello. Thinking to myself that all my christmases had come at once we struck up a conversation. Things were going so well until she asked me if I'd heard of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This book feels like that. I requested it because the synopsis sounded interesting. A romantic suspense novel set with the backdrop of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. That part of it actually kind of works but the book is way too preachy. Honestly, it really should be mentioned in the synopsis that this book is christian romantic suspense. If I knew that from the start I would feel a lot more positive towards the book.
Christians who want a christian book will enjoy this, but the constant preaching will alienate a lot of non-christian readers.
Many thanks to Bethany House and Netgalley for providing me with this ARC
Sabotaged was a bittersweet read. It's the last book in the Alaskan Courage series and, while I loved getting a new adventure with these characters, I was sad to start it knowing it would be the end.
As with all of Dani Pettrey's previous books, the writing was great and I loved the characters. I didn't think it was as suspenseful as the other books and there wasn't enough background information for Reef. I really felt for the main female character, Kirra. We learned a lot about her in this book and some of it was so heartbreaking.
The mystery was interesting, but as I said above, not that intense. It seemed to me that every time something bad happened to one of the main characters, they got out of it nearly right away, which just took some of the suspense away.
All in all, though, I really enjoyed this book. It was a good ending to one of my favorite series! I loved seeing the McKenna's again and hope there will be more stories with them. :) I definitely recommend this series if you enjoy inspirational romantic suspense novels with great characters.

Reef McKeena has finally returned home. Accepting his family's love and forgiveness hasn't always been easy for him, but he's working hard to make them proud of him. When he volunteers to do Search and Rescue for the Iditarod race, he finds himself paired with local vet Kirra Jacobs. Kirra was a goody-goody growing up. And she and Reef were always at odds for some reason or another. He's the last person she wants to be partnered with, but he claims to have changed. When Reef catches her sneaking out of camp one night in search of her uncle, who has gone missing, Reef knows he has to join her. Soon the pair find themselves racing against time, and the race itself, to get answers and locate Kirra's kidnapped cousin before disaster strikes. But as Reef and Kirra are pulled into more and more danger, neither can deny their growing feelings. Reef wants to show Kirra that he would never hurt her, but Kirra's been hurt bad in the past and is afraid to trust this former bad-boy.
I think that this conclusion to the McKenna family saga is my favorite. I have loved each book in this series, but for some reason, Reef just climbed further into my heart than the other siblings.
True to Pettrey's style, this book is an adventure ride to the finish. I actually found myself having to put the book down because I needed sleep. I love the family dynamics in the McKenna family. I love how they are willing to help each other out, no questions asked.
I also loved how Reef didn't pressure Kirra to share her past. Yes he finds out. But he was willing to give her space. I also loved how Kirra had no other option but to trust Reef.
While I'm sad to say goodbye to this family, I'm excited to see what Dani has in store for her readers next.
I received this book for free from the author for the purpose of promoting. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Amazing! This was my first time to read a book by Dani Pettrey. She didn't disappoint. I am looking forward to reading more by her. Full review coming soon.
With the release of Sabotaged, the final book of her Alaskan Courage Series, Dani Pettrey delivers one of the best inspirational romantic suspense books I've read. Prepare for an avalanche of excitement as Kirra Jacobs and the entire McKenna clan battle the harsh Alaskan winter in order to find Kirra's uncle and save his kidnapped daughter. As the Iditarod mushers push towards Nome, many lives hang in the balance as the team races the clock in search of answers.
Sabotaged perfectly balances a suspense rich plot with an emerging romance - leaving just enough room for a moving story of God's healing love. Pettrey demonstrates great skill at building tension by revealing bits and pieces of Kirra's story over time. I found the most poignant moments to be when Kirra shares her past, acknowledges God's continual presence even in trials, and her inability to mend her own heart. These events also highlighted how much Reef McKenna has grown between books. He has changed, or better yet God has changed him - his faith, his motives, and his actions. The fruit of which is the conflict-turned-romance between he and Kirra Jacobs.
As with the previous 4 books of the series, Sabotaged can stand alone. However, if you plan on reading the entire series this book will hold a few spoilers for the previous books. Returning fans need not worry if it's been awhile since you've read Silenced. Pettrey gives thoughtful reminders from her previous books to get you back in the groove. I believe Sabotaged to be a beautiful conclusion to our time spent with the McKenna family. I'm going to miss them {*sniff*}, but I am excited to read whatever Dani Pettrey writes next!!
Sabotaged releases January 27 from Bethany House Publishers.

I thought I might not enjoy Sabotaged as much as I had Dani's other books in the Alaskan Courage series. I couldn't have been more wrong. Kirra and Reef's story was my favorite--the perfect finale.
Never losing sight of the ties that bind the McKenna family together, Dani nevertheless begins an entirely new, unique story. Sabotaged centers around the exciting Iditarod race. The action begins immediately, with Kirra and Reef taking off into the night to find a missing musher. From there, the tension just escalates until you're awake at 1am. Ahem. :)
Yet the exciting action never overtakes the sweet love story developing in the background. As has been her wont from the very first book in the series, Dani has written a lovely backstory for each of the couples in the succeeding books, so we almost knew already that each couple with history would only get into more trouble together. With Kirra and Reef, the drama is no different. They know each other...but are they falling for each other?
You must read Sabotaged to find out!
Buckle up for a high-stakes adventure where the heart-pumping action of Alaska's last frontier and extreme sports will keep you turning pages. But never fear, the romance is just as compelling--especially since Kirra harbors a secret.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and won't soon forget the threads of faith woven throughout. Read it, my friends. Enjoy it, and be changed. Then on to Dani's next series, which I'm thoroughly looking forward to!
Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher to review.
I'm smiling and crying all at once as I close the book on SABOTAGED and on the McKenna family. I didn't want this book -- or this series -- to end! With each new volume of the Alaskan Courage series, Dani Pettrey's storytelling skills have clearly blossomed, and in this fifth and final book, she weaves an ecoterrorism mystery full of red herrings into the iconic Iditarod dogsled race to create the perfect final act and curtain call for her brilliant debut series. I will miss the McKenna clan and all their adventures, and will be revisiting them often as I eagerly await the next adventure series Dani has in store for us!
Reef has fascinated me from the beginning of the Alaskan Courage series. At his absence at the beginning of the first novel, I was immediately curious to discover his story. In this final installment, we get a surprisingly pleasant and satisfying answer to that question. What a great book, not only as a stand alone, but also as the conclusion to the series.
Kirra and Reef have known each other since grade school, but have never been in the same circle. When Kirra’s uncle disappears after passing on cryptic information to Kirra, her and Reef are thrust together to figure out what is happening before it’s too late. I loved the history between Reef and Kirra and how their past added layers to their relationship. Between growing up together and now being adults, a lot has happened, and the mounting feelings they have for one another makes the tension between them so engaging.
This book has become my favorite in the Alaskan Courage series. These characters felt so real to me, their fears, their past hurts and pain, and their fledgling hope. With each book Dani Pettrey has written, I have come to love her writing style more and more. She keeps getting better. Addicting suspense at its finest!
I was so immersed in this novel, but I didn’t want it to come to an end. How can I say goodbye to the McKennas?
*With thanks to Dani Pettrey and the publisher for a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I am on Dani Pettrey’s influencer team.*
I loved the first three books in this series. I love the family dynamics, the well-developed characters, and the fast-paced adventure. The fourth book wasn't as amazing, but I still loved it.
This one was my least favorite. The romantic aspect seemed settled way too early in the book, and the action just didn't carry the book. I skimmed the last third of the book to find out the end.
I enjoyed the epilogue because I did enjoy all the characters in the series. They were intriguing, and the Alaskan setting was unique and added to the stories.
Overall, it's a good ending to a terrific series. I know it seems like I didn't like it, but I think that's just because the first few books were so fantastic that even though this book is good, it just didn't stand out like the others.
I absolutely loved this book. I hated putting it down for even a minute! Action-packed from the very beginning, Dani Pettrey captures the adventurous spirit of our hero, Reef, perfectly. The characters are fantastic. The message of the story focuses on letting go of your past and focusing on the future. Overall, this book was the perfect ending to a fantastic series. I was SO excited to receive my copy and a little sad at the same time. Our time with the McKenna's has ended, but I can't wait to see what else Dani Pettrey has in store for us! Sabotaged is the final book in the Alaskan Courage series. All of the books have been great and suspenseful reads. It is sad to say goodbye to the McKenna family. The characters are well developed and seem real. Reef and Kirra have been friends all of their life and they are united to find Kirra's cousin who has been kidnapped while her father, Kirra's uncle, is being made to carry out a job against his will that will harm wildlife and the environment. Other members of the McKenna family and their significant others work together with Reef and Kirra as they race across Alaska following leads to find answers and Kirra's family. This is a suspenseful finale to a great series.
What a fabulous finale to the Alaskan Courage series! Although I will always hope that there will be other McKenna family sightings in future books by Dani Pettrey, I feel that she wrapped this series up in a spectacular fashion.
If you have not read the other books in the series, you can follow along just fine in Sabotaged. However, to truly understand the inner workings of the McKenna family, you really need to start with book one, Submerged, and work your way through the series. Believe me, you won’t regret it!
I loved the fact that Reef and Kirra have known each other almost their whole lives. They both have pre-conceived notions about who the other person is based on past knowledge. It is very enjoyable to watch their relationship change from antagonizing each other as they did in childhood, to feeling a very real attraction and admiration begin to grow between them.
This book has it all! It is full of the great action and suspense that has been a part of each book in the series. The attraction between Kirra and Reef begins quickly and sets up a wonderful tension between the two. Both Reef and Kirra have changed so much since their high school days, and Kirra’s recent backstory is one that touched my heart. Reef has gone through quite a change himself and is no longer the bad boy that Kirra remembers. Another thing I loved about this book is that, once again, we get to connect up with the other members of the McKenna family and see what is going on in their lives.
Sabotaged is an excellent story, full of attraction and adventure. I it loved from the first page to the very sigh-worthy epilogue at the end of the book.
I would like to express my thanks to Dani Pettrey & Bethany House for the complimentary copy of Sabotaged that I received in exchange for an honest review.
SUMMARY: Finally Returned Home, Reef McKeena Finds His Beloved Alaska Facing Its Greatest Threat
Growing up, goody-two-shoes Kirra Jacobs and troublemaker Reef McKenna were always at odds. Now, working together as search-and-rescue for Alaska's arduous Iditarod race, a growing attraction seems to be forcing aside old arguments. Then Reef catches Kirra sneaking from camp in the middle of the night.
Kirra's uncle, a musher in the race, has disappeared. Kirra and Reef quickly track the man, but what they discover is harrowing: Frank's daughter has been kidnapped. Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl's life--but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen.
REVIEW: This final book in the Alaskan Courage series covering the McKenna family focuses on Reef McKenna and his schoolmate Kirra Jacobs. This book is a fitting finale to the McKenna series as the entire family along with their wives or significant others is involved in solving the mystery. Filled with lots of action, adventure and suspense, the plot line weaves its way through the Alaskan wilderness as it follows the path of the Iditarod. Pettrey also wound a thread of peace, forgiveness, and justice throughout the storyline as Kirra faced her past and learned through God's love and mercy to move forward. Great, well-rounded series that I hated to see end.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "...just because He's (God) at work doesn't guarantee a happy ending, at least not in this life."
"...but God is with us through it all. He tells us we're going to have trouble because this world isn't paradise--because of our sin, we live in a fallen world."
"This life is the blink of an eye compared with the eternity we will spend with our loved ones--with all believers. I take hope and comfort in that--and in the knowledge that God is at work even in the painful things of life--and Christ himself can empathize with our hurt."
Sabotaged was a touching, thrilling, yet bittersweet conclusion to the Alaskan Courage series. Bittersweet just because I did not want to say goodbye to the McKenna family! I loved getting to know Kirra and Reef better. My heart went out to Kirra for all that she had been through, I could not even imagine what it would feel like to go through what she did and then not have anyone believe her, how awful! It was neat to not only see more of the gentleman that Reef is working to be but also to watch him come to realize that God has already forgiven him for what he did in the past, which is something that I think most believers need to be reminded of at times (I know I do!) I thought it was so interesting that this story was set in so many different towns/locations in Alaska that I lost count of just how many, near the end of the book there is a moment where Kirra realizes she can't remember how many plane rides she and Reef have taken in the last few days! I was totally on the same page as her, I had completely lost count by that point too! I also loved that so many members of the McKenna family were in this book a lot, I kinda wished that Cole, Piper and Landon had come into the story a little bit earlier than they did, but still their entrance was perfect! The suspense was sooo good, as was the mystery, for most of the book I had no idea how everything was connected! The epilogue was great though I did feel like it was a tad too short (Of course if I had my way the epilogue would probably be like 50 pages long!) LOL! I don't want to risk spoiling anything so I will just say that I loved Sabotaged soooo much and didn't want to see it end!
The McKenna family owns my heart and always will!
As an influencer for this book I want to thank Dani Pettrey and Bethany House publishers for giving me the opportunity to review this amazing book! The above is my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
Kirra Jacobs has a heart-breaking secret that she keeps under wraps, hiding it away from most people. But when her uncle goes missing and his daughter is kidnapped Kirra is forced to revisit the roots of her secret and risk its unveiling to one of the people she holds dear.
Though at one time at odds with Reef McKenna Kirra finds herself paired off with the reformed troublemaker in their race against time to get to the bottom of the mystery of the two missing people.
Dani Pettrey's Alaskan Courage has been blowing my blog feed up for quite some time. At first I thought it was just another fad that fades in and fades out and i quickly forgotten. But it just kept coming, every time a new book. What was it about this series that was keeping people so engrossed? So when Sabotaged came around I tackled that book like no one's business. And guess what? I stayed up All. Night. Long. The book was that interesting. It's part thriller, part mystery, part adventure and I loved it. And that's saying a lot when you think about my dislike of contemporary fiction. If authors like Dani Pettrey keep writing awesome books I can just give up on making those dark circles under my eyes go away. Books before looks! There were some slightly mature elements but it was tactfully done and realistic. Dani tackles themes like injustice, trust and reforming of character (or lack thereof). If I didn't have a stack of books that have deadlines right now I would go out an buy the entire series to read.
DISCLAIMER: In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising” we would like to note that we received a hardcopy of “Sabotaged” provided by the publishers, Bethany House, in exchange for our honest review.
Reading this book was bittersweet. On one hand I was ecstatic to read it since I've adored the other four books in this series and couldn't wait to read Reef's story. But on the other hand I was quite sad to have to say goodbye to the McKennas. But that all left my mind as soon as I read the first pages and got completely sucked in. The action was non-stop from page one, and I could not stop turning pages. Dani Pettrey definitely knows how to grab her reader's attention and not let it go till they are reading the last sentence. I loved Reef and Kirra and it was so much fun to watch their love story unfold. It was so cute how they'd grown up not liking each other very much but then ended up falling in love. They were so opposite and that just made their romance all that more adorable. I thought the setting of the Iditarod was genius and unique, though it did have me thinking of Snow Dogs quite a lot! And lastly even though it was so hard to say goodbye to this amazing family, the ending scene was beyond perfect and left me with a huge dopey grin on my face. In short this book, and this series, are just so stinkin' good and if you haven't read them yet you need to do so ASAP!
I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Wow, thrilling adventure and mystery is what Dani Pettrey is skilled at writing! It was so hard to put down the book when real life called, and I devoured it in all my spare time and late into the night :) I thoroughly enjoyed Reef and Kirra's story, the last of the Alaskan Courage series. Sabotaged has all the vital elements that the previous books have- romance, family loyalty, extreme adventure and a dangerous mystery to be solved- yet the story is fresh, unique, and compelling. The banter and tension between Reef and Kirra is interesting as their eyes are opened to see new sides to the other throughout their journey. Their friendship deepens as they trust and protect each other, and the long-held mutual but hidden admiration quickly develops into stronger feelings as they race to find the villains threatening them and their loved ones. The spiritual themes are handled well as Reef continually turns to the Lord for guidance and Kirra's faith is tested and strengthened through the adversity.
(Thank you to Bethany House Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)
Another romantic suspense book that the hubs and I listened to together. We really enjoyed it, and the narrator did a fine job. This author is one of my faves. I always love how she puts her characters through the proverbial wringer with action and then romance. But my favorite thing of all is the hope and salvation in Jesus that is in all of the books of this series.
Our of this whole series this will be most unlike read. There was so much going on with this book. To many storylines, I couldn't keep up. There was an really important storyline the book brought up and they barely addressed it and went on. They went just went on and on to different leads I honestly got lost. The whole series you didn't know if the couples will get together so they had you through the whole book but this book told you right away so was wasn't really anything to look forward to. I just felt this book was to confusing for me to keep up and I was glad when they finished the book but at least the epilogue was really good. All in all this series was really great and I was happy to have read it. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a great series!!
After reading the first four books in Dani Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series, I was a little conflicted about the release of Sabotaged, which is the fifth and final book in the series. I mean, of course, I was excited for another Dani Pettrey novel (who wouldn't be?!) but I hate saying farewell to characters I've come to know and love (the McKennas, y'all!).
Sabotaged is a slight departure from the rest of the series. It doesn't feel quite as adventurous because much of the story takes place away from the race. And the overall pace feels much slower. However, as the story progresses and the clues begin to fit together, I felt the urgency fueling the characters' actions and got swept up in the mystery.
It was also interesting to see Reef and Kirra finally be thrown together after getting hints that there could be a romance between the two of them earlier in the series. They've known each other since Kindergarten, so a lot of the "get to know you" stuff is out of the way. In Sabotaged, we get to see them get to know each other as adults, work through baggage from past relationships, and figure out their feelings for each other. Although it happened pretty quickly, the relationship felt natural. I really enjoyed digging into Kirra's past—between a tragedy in college and family secrets, there's a lot to explore there. I wish we could have gotten in on more of Reef's past and the change that's come about.
As always, one of my favorite aspects of a family series is getting to connect with other characters/siblings from previous books. Two of the other couples played significant roles in Sabotaged, and a wonderful epilogue at the end tied the series together quite nicely.
If you've somehow missed out on this series, I highly recommend it! While each book can be read as a stand alone novel, I think you should read them in order for maximum enjoyment. [3.5 stars]
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.
Sabotaged by Dani Pettrey is book five and the final book in the Alaskan series. I am very sad to see it end. The author does an amazing job of capturing your attention and the book is halfway over before you realize it. If you've been following the series you may have wondered, like I did, how much I was going to like Reef as the main character. You will be thrilled to know that he has been growing in each book and was a great male lead in Sabotaged. In the previous books he's been the undependable one. Kirra intrigued me from book four and I was excited to see her teamed up with Reef. They made a great couple. As with the other books the author balances a lot of action and adventure with relationship development. Kirra’s back story was heartbreaking; even more so because her family didn't support her. Kirra’s cousin has been kidnapped and her uncle is being blackmailed into helping some unsavoring characters. The Iditarod dogsled race is the backdrop for several of the scenes. The McKenna’s from the other books in the series have a secondary role which is exciting to see how they have continue to grow in their relationships. The epilogue was so special and a great way to end the series. Sabotaged is a great book, although not my favorite because I still have a crush on Jake and was thrilled that he played a significant part in this story. I am anxiously waiting what Dani will write next. I would like to recommend a series with Jake and Kayden as the lead characters. Dani remains one of my go to authors.
You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.
To say I enjoy this series is an understatement, but then, I think most of my returning readers know this I’d gotten to “know” these characters so well and even gotten my mother addicted to the books. Reef’s character is something of an enigma throughout the four prior books. Sure he does appear here and there, but we never really know him. Reef is the “black sheep” of the McKenna family and it makes him hard to like in the way we do his siblings. He's the brother we are most concerned for. That being said, I'm glad the beginning see Reef already “together.” This paints him as more of a worthy hero. I love the budding romance between him and Kirra, especially since they had been friends (sort of) for many years. Kirra’s past isn’t without pain and her progression along with their relationship is also well developed. Read the review in full on Finding Wonderland..
Sincere thanks to the author for providing a complimentary influencer copy of this book for reviewing purposes.
Sabotaged brings to an end the Alaskan Courage series, following the McKenna family. Sadly. I surely hated to say goodbye. This story follows youngest sibling, Reef McKenna and Kirra Jacobs, veterinarian in Yancey, Alaska. Kirra's cousin Meg has been kidnapped to ensure her father cooperates with the crooks. Kirra and Reef set off to try to find Meg and her father, and much danger ensues.
Kirra is dealing with an awful hurt, wondering why God turned His back on her during her difficult days. Reef has learned that God is his only hope. Together, they discover that the only hope we have is in God and He is there during our most difficult times, waiting to carry us through into brighter days.
The ending of this book completely took me by surprise and was the most wonderful ending possible for the McKennas. I do hope that maybe in a few years Dani will do a brief visit with the McKenna family to catch up and visit old friends. Maybe a novella???
Yes, the bittersweet comes with this book. The ending of a wonderful series and a well done ending it was. Reef and Kirra are both love able characters. The stories have been going on long enough that bad boy Reef is reformed and ready to get serious about life. When Kirra slips out of the SAR sight, it's only natural for Reef to follow and find himself in trouble with a girl he can easily fall in love with. After surviving one experience together without major frostbite, they find themselves working together to solve the mystery of Kirra's uncle Frank.
Dani Pettrey does a great job of showing us the wilds of Alaska and the dangers of the weather and terrain. We also get to spend plenty of time with some of our favorite McKenna's. My own favorite McKenna, Gage, gets plenty of book time! I'm anxious to see what she comes up with next for her fans. I'm sure it will be great, whatever it is.
Let me first say that I am disappointed that this is the last book. I would have loved more! I just adored all of the characters' personalities in all of the books! This one was packed with some great suspense and mystery! Sadly, the one character was dealing with a past rape; but thankfully it was not over detailed. Not appropriate for those under 17.
Loved this book and it was a very fitting ending to the Alaskan Courage series. Dani Pettrey has managed to create a family in the McKenna's that you really care about. Bravo, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
