Children indeed love rhymes because cadence adds music to the tales. Agents and editors seldom read rhyming books and although publishers are skeptical about them they continue to publish some. The problem is in the genre: Verses are powerful leaders and often drag the plot into difficult-to-swim-in deep water. It is also easy to write bad rhymes. THE ACCIDENTALLY GOOD GRIZZLY has a good narrative, a lovable character, and a wonderful message. Unfortunately in several pages, one can find forced rhymes and near rhymes. They damage the musicality of the publication and introduce hurdles - forcing young bookworms to read with an incorrect rhythm. The illustrations are an excellent visual map of the story.
I really enjoyed this sweet story about a bear named Gilbert who accidentally causes a bit of destruction when he is little, and becomes labeled as a bad bear. He continues to live up to his reputation until, once again an accident gives people the wrong idea, but this time that wrong idea may finally be the right one. With a wonderfully thoughtful message for kids, and charming illustrations that support the story beautifully, this is a book children will cherish.
I enjoyed this optimistic story and kids will too! Beautiful illustrations and clever text with the kid-friendly message that you don't always get what you see (or expect). Kids love books about scary animals that have a heart!
