6 MESMERIZING SLOW BURNING STARS!

description

This book was AMAZING!! So incredibly beautiful, sexy, and captivating that I cannot believe how overjoyed I feel to have read it. That's because this is the type of story where you get everything you can hope for in a romance: dual POVs, scorching passion, tension, sweetness, anticipation, laugh-out-loud-humor, and a very heartfelt kind of drama. Imagine all that plus two very strong characters that drive the story in such a way that they make you feel all the emotions deep in your heart so that you just can't get enough of them and their intense connection. That was exactly Slow Burn for me, a captivating story that was perfect from beginning to end.

This story starts with a one-night stand turning complicated. A night that was meant to be just an escape from reality, nothing more. At least that's what Haddie Montgomery had hoped for when she decides to proposition herself to her friend Beckett (Becks) Daniels but of course things don't go as planned. Yes, Becks makes her forget as she so badly needed it that night but the problem afterwards is that now there's something new Haddie can't forget and that is Becks.

“I don’t want any strings. None. So why the hell do I feel like he’s already woven them through my thoughts, binding us together somehow?”

After recently losing her sister, Haddie becomes guarded with her emotions. She wants no strings, no commitments, and no complications. She only wants to lose herself with men that have no problem with walking away right after they're done, no questions asked. That's her rule and it was working fine for her until she gets involved with Becks and then all her rules seem out of place because he indeed cares, have many questions, and doesn't want to walk away from her. In fact, he wants more than just one-night stand and he knows that Haddie does too underneath it all. What Becks does not know is why Haddie keeps running away from him and why she refuses to give themselves a chance when their connection is all there. Well, Becks may not know the truth but he's more than ready to get to the bottom of things and find out.

“I don’t care how fucking long it takes to prove otherwise, but Haddie Montgomery is not going to walk away from me again without a fight.”

And that's how the mesmerizing slow burning in this story begins. The pull and push, the teasing, the fighting, tempting/craving each other, and that undeniable connection that ties them so strongly together is Haddie and Becks' constant undoing and I loved it. It was incredibly fascinating to see how throughout the whole book their defenses slowly burn out leaving them no choice but to succumb to each other both physically and emotionally. . .

“There’s something about Becks—his easygoing nature, his personality, his kindness—that has me reaching over my iron walls and wanting to connect. Wanting to reach for that shadow of myself that is floating away just beyond my reach. The balloon without a string at the top of your ceiling. There. Present. But never within reach. Until it deflates. Falls lifeless.”

How I loved these characters, I loved them both individually and when together. Haddie in particular really stood out to me. I loved how strong she was even when she was so stubborn because that just added to the charm of her to character and it worked perfectly for the story. I also loved her confidence and her sexiness which a lot of times served her very well in getting exactly what she wanted from Becks and those moments were so funny and sizzling to read. But my very favorite thing about Haddie has to be her story and how real and truthful it felt. Yeah, her story was heartbreaking yet so full of hope that it kept hooked, anxious, and at the end it made me believe that much more in the power of love. It was just a powerful and heartfelt drama that really captivated me and made me connect with Haddie from the very first page to the very last one.

“Wanting more of him is most definitely a possibility . . . but it’s the what comes after that’s not in the cards for me.”

Now to the hero of this story, Becks. This man was swoony, irresistible, and incredible to no end. I loved him so much! I think what made him so special and refreshing to me was the fact that he's not the broken one in the story; he's actually the healthy one meant to save/rescue and the way he goes about doing just that for Haddie is absolutely panty-and-heart-melting. His persistence and determination to be with her blew me away more times that I can count. He was so endearing but at the same time so alpha that such combination was lethal for both Haddie and myself. His vulnerability and the times he doubted himself were also breathtaking as they showed how much he truly cared for the very stubborn woman he was slowly falling for. Moreover, being able to hear his own voice in my head throughout the story was priceless because he conveyed all his emotions perfectly in serious and funny ways I just couldn't get enough of. ♥

“The woman makes me feel in ways I never expected. It should be me who wants to bolt, but for some reason it makes me want her even more. Everything about her draws me in, hooks me, mesmerizes me. Goddamn it to hell. She’s my voodoo.”

This book absolutely falls into one of my most favorites now, it was just too captivating and perfectly put together. It reminded me also how much I was missing reading a book by this wonderful author. Really, having read and loved her previous books I kind of expected the same level of amazing from this story but what Ms. Bromberg delivered here instead totally surpassed all my expectations. She really outdid herself; she not only gave me an unforgettable romance that was not only epic for its subject matter but also because she just knows how to create vivid characters, infuse the story with her unique kind of humor, and also make the story as sizzling as it is heartfelt. So yeah, without further ado I have to say that this is a total MUST-READ from me!!

“You’re that once-in-a-lifetime type of woman, Haddie.”

If you haven't read the previous books in this series, please don't despair. You don't have to have read them to enjoy Slow Burn. This story can be easily read as a standalone. Just be warned: once you finished this book and have met Colton and Rylee (from Driven, Fueled, Crashed, & Raced) you most definitely are going to want to read their story too! ;)

Haddie and Beckett met for the force of circumstances: their best-friends fell in love. And then, in their wedding, as the best-man and maid of honor they hook up for the first time.
The rules were simple: No strings. Just sex.
But while Beckett makes pretty clear from the beginning that he wants more, Haddie has her own reasons for refusing getting serious with him.
She pushes. He pulls. But there will come a time when pulling gets tiresome, and it will fall on Haddie to decide: Are they or aren’t they?

When I started reading this book I figure it was going to be sexy (it was) and with a certain amount of frustration, just like K. Bromberg likes to torture us. (It had).
What I didn’t expect was for this to be a tearjerker. I know, after Colton and Rylee’s story it shouldn’t be a surprise, but it was.
This was a very well written book, with a strong an emotional story line, and despite the slow beginning it had a great story development. If you’re a fan of this series, you shouldn’t miss this book. And if you aren’t, you should give this one a try anyway. It was without a doubt, a very pleasant reading.

Rating: 4 Stars.
Characters Development: First, let me tell you why this book probably didn’t have a higher rating: Haddie. Damn, what a frustrating and stupidly stubborn heroine. I spent more than half of this book agitated by her. She had her reasons, but it came to a point where she was simply being idiotic. And the reason that despite my frustration I still give this book 4 stars? Beckett! He was so freaking amazing! He knew what he wanted and he went after it, no doubts, no second thoughts. And let me tell you, he did it with an amazing amount of patient with Haddie! I loved him! It was nice to see more of Colton and Rylee and I can’t wait for the next book of this series!

Wow this book blew me away! It was simple amazing!!This book had exactly what I wanted! There were parts in this book that touched me and made me love it even more!I laughed and I cried! The writing is so beautiful that I read some parts two times!!I loved that this book was written in dual POV’s so we can see what Haddie and Becks are thinking.

No strings. Just sex. This is exactly what it was supposed to be for Haddie and Becks.. Haddie wants to forget her pain so she doesn't want anything more than sex. However Becks wants more. He wants to be the man who can make her happy again, but Haddie is not making it easy for him.

I fell in love with Becks! He is amazing and so perfect for Haddie!I loved the fact that he goes after what he wants!!Haddie is like a fire! She is a little stubborn but apart from this she is a lovable character that I wanted so much to embrace her!The chemistry they have is off the charts and so hot!!

"There's something about the way he kisses
that makes me hope he never stops."

K. Bromberg did an amazing job with this book!!If you need an amazing book which will make you cry, laugh and feel hot this is exactly what you need!

Slow Burn was an emotional read, dealing with a subject that’s very personal to me.

Haddie Montgomery is determined to be a “no strings” kind of girl, but her resolve to remain emotionally detached is put to the test when she has a drunken night of hot sex with Beckett Daniels. Becks is different from the bad boy type of guy she’s normally attracted to, but that doesn’t change the fact that he completely gets under her skin. Still, in spite of the intense pull he has on her, Haddie pushes and fights the connection they have.

Becks knew better than to sleep with, Haddie, even if he is powerfully attracted to her. He knew he’d just want more, but didn’t realize how addictive Haddie would be. Becks can’t forget her, and doesn’t like that she keeps pushing him away, in denial of the fact that they have something worth taking an emotional risk.

I went into this story without knowing what Haddie’s issue was, and had I known I probably would’ve passed on reading Slow Burn. It’s something I’ve been affected by and I usually don’t like reading about it. But by the time it was revealed I was invested in the story and so I plowed ahead anyhow. I felt Haddie’s fears profoundly, because I struggle with them myself, but at the same time I was so frustrated with her for much of this read it diminished my enjoyment greatly. I don’t like non-communication or lies, and basically Haddie shut everyone out, choosing to face things alone emotionally, and I just did not get this, at all. She ran hot and cold with Becks for most of the story, and I just wanted to shake her. Supposedly Haddie lives by the motto “Time is precious. Waste it wisely” but in my opinion she did everything to screw Becks and her precious time up completely!

“God, you stubborn, fucking woman. Quit being a martyr. What’s best is you letting me make my own goddamn decisions and for you to stop lying to me so that I can.” Amen Becks!

“All I know is that protecting someone from the truth is just another way of shutting them out.”

My other complaint was that the internal thoughts from our characters were too long winded and would’ve benefited from some editing down. I ended up skimming these after a while. But that’s my personal opinion, and other readers may not mind this.

The saving grace to Slow Burn was Becks. I absolutely LOVED him! He was so patient, determined and way more understanding than I would’ve been at times. He was also sexy as hell! I will say their chemistry was off-the-charts, and Ms. Bromberg has a way with building sexual tension to make the scenes panty melting hot!

Even though this wasn’t a total win for me, I did enjoy Slow Burn and it really moved me emotionally. I was crying off and on for the last 25%, but I was very pleased with how it all turned out.

Well, that was a tear jerker. Hot and heavy. And very emotional. Ok read.

Sorry I’m not really reviewing...taking a fast ride through the Driven series. I don’t really think it needs anymore lengthy reviews at this point. So I can just save time and enjoy the madness.

4 Driven Stars

Slow Burn is a standalone novel, part of the Driven series. This is my first novel by K. Bromberg. I heard the series is very steamy and let’s be honest, I totally have cover love.

Becks and Haddie had one night. No strings attached. It was magical and wonderful.

Haddie uses sex to escape from her internal issues.

Haddie’s sister died a very slow and painful death. Haddie’s sister had breast cancer and Haddie watched her die over the course of 6 months. This makes Haddie very nervous in regard towards men and her life in general. She doesn’t want to involve herself in anyone, since that means she might get the same cancer and die too.

Slow Burn is filled with ANGST.

Haddie is a bit frustrating. She is very guarded and with that she keeps Becks at double arm’s length.

Beck is the kind of guy you want to be friends with. He’s perfect boyfriend material. He’s sweet, loyal, adorable and very sexy. Haddie knows this. She knows he’s the perfect boyfriend and that is one of the reasons why she doesn’t want to pursue a relationship with him.

She doesn’t want to break his heart if she gets cancer and die.

I was going crazy reading Haddie’s internal dialogue. She has a lot of issues. She obviously loves her sister (I have one too, so I completely understand this). But every time she pushed Becks away, I felt like a part of my heart broke a little more for Becks.

She keeps pushing him away (it’s a lot) and you want to slap her and tell her to just be with him! It’s overwhelming, but it keeps you glued to the pages.

It’s a roller coaster of emotions and Haddie will keep you on your toes. You will never know how she reacts towards Becks and let’s just say, a lot goes on with her.

There are other elements, I assume some of the previous characters from the series are in there, there’s ex’s involved which creates some additional mild tension.

If you are a fan of angsty reads with guarded heroines, this one is for you. I will definitely read more Bromberg’s books.

An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review

What a rollercoaster of a journey... I have been in a somewhat of a Bromberg journey. I'm in love with Kristys writing ability. she holds me captive with her spirit and meanings behind the story. That although these ARE Epic love stories I just love the plots and they grip me to the edge of my seat!

Haddie lost her sister through the C word that destroyed her, and her most loved ones. This story was about her battle with dealing with that, the pain, the guilt and the love.

"I wish for time so I can make a thousand more wishes on my own."

Even though I felt for Haddie in every way possible and what she is and was going through, in past and present. How she deals with life period including how she isolated herself, and that does include the people around her. I fell more so for Becks, he made the book for me. I just felt my heart was breaking in two when reading his prospective, I could see through his eyes and completely and utterly felt devastated by his heart and how he opened himself right up. In ways they are chalk and cheese in that they ARE opposites. Opposites attract so they say?!!

Above all the characters were palpable, emotions strung high. I cried, I vented, I laughed, I loved. I also am in love with the journey that Kristy took me on and will forever be grateful for giving me the experience I have been through through Colton and now Becks. Seeing insight into Colton helping Becks to giving back what he got in Aces own books, made me love them even more. I love Brombergs feisty heroines, but I will say the only reason this is not a 5 star was purely because I did get annoyed with Haddie and I just wanted her to lean on Becks yet when she did Becks sure have his 110% and I'll forever be in love with his purity and unconditional love that's just HIM

This can be read as a Standalone but I will recommend to read The Driven series to have an understanding of the friendships between the group but it's not essential.

And just remember...

description

That was an intense and exhausting read! But at the end I was smiling like a baby, first because Becks was EVERYTHING I thought he would be and second because the last two chapters + epilogue were PERFECT

description

It's been since Driven that I wanted Becks story and I wanted his HEA with Haddie. If you haven't read the Driven Trilogy, no worries, you can still start with Slow Burn and you won't be lost.
And if you've already read the Driven Trilogy, you have to read Haddie and Becks story, even though, for me, it wasn't what I expected, at the end I wore my heart on my sleeve and the ride was so worth it.

~ TIME IS PRECIOUS, WASTE IT WISELY~

It's always dangerous when you start reading a book and you have expectations. For this one I had a LOT I expected the book to be a certain way with both characters being a certain way too. I knew Becks was a charming guy, caring, kind, patient,... and I knew Haddie was a strong , independent woman with a lot of sass. But I didn't see coming the problems that can arise in a life. And I never imagine that something terrible could happen to Haddie and thus ruin my perfect little image I had in my mind.

Haddie's life has been shattered 6 months ago when she lost her sister Lexi. Both of them were really close and losing her was like loosing a part of herself.
After so long, Haddie is trying to act normal but she failed miserably. She is just the shadow of herself. She also try to lost herself in meaningless guy, just to feel a little, just to try to have some semblance of emotions.

description

Right from the start, Haddie's pain and struggle where very palpable and unbearable. K. Bromberg did a magnificent work with her writing. She describes every emotion, every state of mind, every feelings and it was painful to read. There are a lot of inner thought and personally it was a little too much. Sometimes Haddie kept repeating herself and it was so depressing. All I wanted was to slap her, so she could react and get her shit together!

description

On Rylee and Colton's wedding night, she crossed a limit with Becks, even if both are aware that it will change everything
1. Because Rylee is Haddie's best friend and because Becks is Colton's best friend.
2.Because of their own rules they never break
As I already said Becks was perfect. First he is a dirty talker and if you know me a little you already know they are my weakness.

description

Then from the beginning until the end, he was what I called a guy excellent for a married life. He is caring, always there to listen, he doesn't judge, he has a heart bigger that what you can imagine, he sticks to people he love, he is romantic, he is funny and I discovered a side I already knews he got under the surface but never really saw... a dominant side to drop your panties

~This orgasm is mine. You will not give it to anyone else, even your own hand. I want you strung so goddam tight, you beg to fuck you, beg me to own you ~

Slown Burn wasn't an easy and light read as I expected. I went from stunned to pissed but also from happy to extremely sad. My feels were all over the place and that's why I say I was exhausted at the end. K. Bromberg doesn't choose an easy path for both our MC and I must admit I cussed a little and I didn't always understand why she made Haddie suffer so much, why she made me suffer so much.

description

Haddie's sister died because of breast cancer and Haddie knows she might developping the same disease. She is so scared, she is so hesitant to take the test to appease her mind and she is using that "excuse" to push people away, she uses it to not open up to Becks.

~Does he have any clue how hard it is for me to hold back right now? How much I think about him? How I want to take the leap... But I can't. I can't until I know for sure. Until I knw I have tomorrow to offer him

While I understand her motive, for me, Haddie was taking the matter in a wrong way and most of the time she was unfair with Becks and herself. Yet once again Becks was there to remind her the essential.

description

description

Fav' scenesBonus:
1.Becks was amazing. I laughed so much with her.
2.Rylee and Colton's word. Best friend are the best person you need
3.Danny I hope K. Bromberg will consider writing something for him. He deserves his own HEA ♥

When the weight of the day comes crashing down around Haddie, the loss of her sister, Riley’s wedding... she knows just the thing that will allow her to go numb to everything that hurts. Sex. But when Beckett refuses to let her leave, she starts to look at her friend with less than friendly intentions.

One night.
No strings.
Not so much.

I feel torn about this story. There were elements that utterly destroyed me and others that had me wanting to rip out my hair. I didn’t quite expect the story that was contained on these pages. What tore me apart was the moments with Daniel, her brother in law. These vulnerable moments where we saw a broken man that had to continue to go through the daily routines, although he didn’t want to. These few moments made me feel like I was stealing glimpses into private moments that I shouldn’t be, I was intruding but I couldn’t look away. There was so much pain etched in these scenes that you felt every moment.

For Hads.... Oh, baby girl. I wanted to throttle her so much. Even understanding where she was coming from, I still wanted her to embrace those around her and take in the love they had to offer. To allow them to make the choice, rather than her stealing those chances away from her. For every time she had me on the edge of tears, she would leave me fuming mad.

Becks was so goddamn perfect. I loved getting a chance at seeing the serious side to this man and watching him fight, even if it was against the worst of odds at times.

The few little moments we get of Colton felt like a special treat to the readers (and lovers of the Driven Trilogy), I know that it would be impossible to give us this story without tossing a little Colton in and I loved that Kristy made sure that Colton didn’t steal the show. He had his moments, this was Becks’ turn to shine.

I might have overlooked the details of Haddie’s sisters passing during the last book, but for the life of me I can’t remember if it was really a focus of the story, so I felt like I was missing some back story leading into Slow Burn. Now, I might have just been so focused on Colton in the final book that nothing else penetrated my thoughts.

I wanted to give this read a full five stars, but there were some small things that kept me from fully notching up this 4.5 to a 5. There were times where the story felt familiar. Like the roles were reversed and Colton became Haddie and Riley became Becks. The constant push/pull of the two main characters along with the flow of the writing had me thinking about the Driven books often. Kristy has a very distinct writing style and beyond Unraveled, which had an entirely unique voice, all that I can base my thoughts on is the Driven Trilogy. So it’s easy to assume that the voice of this story had some similarities to Driven and that as we get to experience more works from the author, we’ll be able to see the differences between the characters/story and just the way she constructs her story, how she sets the pace.

In the end, this turned me into an emotional mess for about half of the story. I was on the edge of my seat as I neared the end with absolutely no idea how this story was going to end. I loved that. I loved that I was tortured until the very end and that Kristy squeezed every bit of emotion she could out of her reader until the very end.

I am a fan of this author. I remember when Driven when it was released after seeing it blow up all over GoodReads. I immediately knew I had to read her book. And with everything she has released since, she has not once disappointed me. Even when she went a little to the dark side, I was so proud of the risk that she took. I look forward seeing what she has in store for us with the next book in this series.

I finished this book hours ago, yet I sat and stared at the screen because I could not come up with the right words to adequately review this book.

I start by saying that this is a "standalone" read, but having the Driven Trilogy under belt will give the foundation...the "in" with the characters...the whole feel for Bromberg. So now I say that many will dislike this as it is quite taxing. For me, I BEYOND LOVED this book. K. Bromberg rocked me hard with Becks and Haddie. I laughed. I panted. I swore. I was completely owned.

For those who don't know Beckett Daniels and Haddie Montgomery...

 photo PhotoGrid_1424825525340_zpsdrwjgzfl.jpg

They are the counterparts to Colton and Rylee. The BFF's and constant sources of support and lol moments. Becks is solid, he is smart, he is beyond sexy. His attraction to "Hads" is a given but he is not about to jeopardize the friend dynamic! OH, but Haddie has needs. She has had a bad year and wants to set her body on fire just to numb the pain in her heart. Becks is there...he is sexy...he can give her NO STRINGS. But what if one night TIES the two together irrelevant of what was said?

 photo PhotoGrid_1424826377826_zpsmwtbbv04.jpg

Put your big girl panties on and have a spare handy as Becks and Haddie rock the shit out of one another! With fierce lust and body rocking emotion they are an inferno of intimacy. One night, multiple over the top orgasms, no strings...so begins the mind games, the cat and mouse chases. Becks can see the big picture, he just needs Haddie to "put on her gloves" and step into the ring with him. What he doesn't know is that her push away comes from a dark place...a fear...an unknown future that keeps her body open but her heart closed.

But the moments with Becks...

The days of intimacy for relief, for a crutch to not feel, well those are gone. Beckett Daniels has other plans...

When I thought I could not be more of a K. Bromberg fan, BAM, she knocks it out of the park. While I loved the Driven Trilogy, she pulled more emotion, created more heat, and developed a better rooted relationship in just one book. I can admit that Haddie completely frustrated me. He story alone was taxing, so add in her behavior and the frustration was so close to shut down mode. Kudos to Becks. OH SNAP! This man is SOLID, SEXY, STEADY...quite possibly the best book BF ever written. He was vulnerable and sweet while hard and dominant. He had the patience of a saint and the pure heart of an angel.

Haddie had no chance to survive the SLOW BURN that Becks ignited. If you want drama and angst, scorching hot "against the wall" intimacy, deep rooted/soul searing romance, then look no further as this read will rip your emotional well being to shreds yet leave you smiling and horny as you wipe away your tears!!!

2 Frustrating Stars!!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy of Penguin Group

"Remember, Had. Time is precious. Waste it wisely."

Ok, after reading the first four books I could NOT wait for this book!!! I was so excited to read about Haddie and Becks but after this book I was sadly disappointed. This is one of those storylines that you will absolutely resonate with and love it or the complete opposite and not like it. If it weren't for me loving Beck it would have gotten a 1 star from me.

"Don't be sorry, Had. Never be sorry for needing me."

After reading the first four books for some reason the storyline of Had's sister having cancer seems lost to me. I recall her being mad at her sister but no where do I remember this tragic storyline. Anyways, here we have the once fun loving Haddie in the first three books that turns into a woman who's escaping and scared. To do this she lets know one in and pushes everyone away but uses sex to feel something.

And now Becks knows. He knows that perfect Haddie isn't so perfect. (who cares that she isn't perfect because newsflash Haddie NO ONE is perfect)

Haddie's mom is a breast cancer survivor but her sister didn't win that battle. After witnessing her sister's sickness and death, Haddie fears she has the same genes. So instead of finding out she pushes everyone away and always falls for the unattainable. After the wedding of Colton & Rylee she needs to feel, so she wrangles Beck into a one night stand with no strings. After this it changes their relationship where Beck wants more and Haddie wants to push him away because she wants to be a martyr and go at life alone in fear that if she gets sick she wouldn't want to put anyone through the tribulations of the disease and dying.

"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone, Had. I know you're scared, but push through it, You just might miss the opportunity to live again."

Haddie goes back and forth with want and pushing. To no strings, to we are , to we were no strings. What! I thought it was more than it wasn't and back and forth for the majority of the book. The reason why her choices didn't resonate with me is because I recently had a similar scare and I can't imagine going at that alone as I wanted my husband with me the whole journey, where Haddie takes the choices away from everyone for her martyrdom. I'm not sure if she was afraid that if she did give people a choice they would reject her or if she really was trying to protect them. All I know is that her choices made me angry through out the WHOLE book.

"Don't you think that's his decision to make? Why do you get to hold all the cards?" (exactly Haddie, who made you god in the decision making for others)

Thankfully Beck is awesome and loves wholeheartedly which makes Haddie get her head out her her martyr ass and see the potential of so much more.

"God, you stubborn, fucking woman. Quit being a martyr. What's best is you letting me make my own goddamn decisions and for you to stop lying to me so that I can."

"... All I know is that protecting someone from the truth is just another way of shutting them out."

God almost the WHOLE book is Haddie doing the martyr protection bullshit which got me so mad.

Who am I to try and control fate for us? (exactly Haddie, who are you to decide that)

Gah! I so wanted to like this book but when you are mad throughout most of the book it's hard to salvage to a great book for me. Like I said if it wasn't for Beck this would have been a DNF for me.

" ... It's okay to use my boy when you need strength. His back won't break if you do, but his heart just might break if you don't."

At the end of the book there is a bonus scene of when Beck and Haddie first meet. If this story was more of that dynamic I would have been all over this book, but sadly I didn't like the story or the heroine, which irks me because I loved Haddie in the first three books. For me Beck would get a 4 stars but for the story as a whole 1 to 2 frustrating stars! Even though I didn't like this particular story does NOT mean I won't continue with this author or this series. I loved the first 4 books and I will continue with the others as you can't have all winners, and like I said at the beginning others will LOVE this book but some will not.

"Screw the strings. They can be cut.
I'm using chains to tie us together
because it takes a hell of a lot more to break those."

OHHHHHHHH BECKS ...

I'm still in awe with this man. I already liked him in The Driven Series. But in Slow Burn I fell really hard for him.

"There's something about the way he kisses
that makes me hope he never stops."

This book easily could've been a 5 ★★★★★ read for me. Thanks to HADDIE it wasn't.

There were times when I just wanted to slap some sense into her..

Also reading more about COLTON & RYLEE made me very very happy. It also made me realize how I've missed those two...*sigh*

All in all, it was a very enjoyable read for me - how could it be otherwise with BECKS and COLTON in it!

So many push an pull games goin on in this book

Becks an Haddie have meet a few times there best friends have just got married an they end up have really hot sexy time at the end of the nite but 1 thing Haddie wants is not strings just sex but the thing is that Becks as liked Haddie 4 a while an Haddie does like him just has much but Haddie is hidin a lot of things up since her sister died of cancer she doesn't want 2 let Becks 2 close 2 her cause she is scared she doesn't want 2 c him go through what her bro in law an niece r goin through but there is s really strong pull between them an they can't seem 2 keep there hands of each other but Haddie just keeps pushin him away but Becks doesn't let that stop him

I luvd Haddie in the first 3 books she was so funny an sassy I do think she lost a lil bit of her spark in this book I know she was goin through a lot but she just annoyed me lil I don't want 2 sound insensitive cause she is goin through a horrible think but I didn't like the way she wouldn't let Beck made his own mind up
Beck is a great character an this man knows what he wants once he's had a taste of Haddie Becks is a lot like Colten used 2 b they liked a different woman al the time but Beck as had his eye on Haddie 4 a while an he wasn't goin 2 let anyone or thing get in his way 1 thing Becks is a hot piece of ass he's so sexy an I defo would kick him out of bed

5 Time-Is-Precious-Stars!!

I have a confession to make: I read this book a while ago and have simmered over what I could possibly write that would do justice to this unexpectedly sexy, warm-hearted and funny story. Slow Burn was nothing that I expected from Ms. Bromberg, and it totally took me by surprise and blew me away!!

Ah, Becks and Haddie. If you think you know them from the Driven Trilogy, you will see them in a whole new light in Slow Burn. With that being said, this book can absolutely be read and enjoyed as a standalone. Becks and Haddie had one night together and he knows in his heart that he won’t be able to stay away from Haddie, even though she presents a tough-as-nails exterior to the world. He sees the real her. I read this book literally on the edge of my seat and I have never appreciated Ms. Bromberg’s brand of humor more!

Favorite quotes:

“Time is precious. Waste it wisely.”

“I just figured you were having some regression pussy.”

“Whenever I don’t want to deal…, I go and have meaningless sex to not think about it. ‘Slut glut, I believe is my term for it.”

“Slow burn, my ass. More like fire in the goddamn hole.”

“Goddmann estrogen vortex.”

Slow Burn will make you laugh, cry and SWOON. It’s a must-read and is destined to become another beloved contemporary romance from K. Bromberg.

Actual rating: 2.5 stars.

I am a bit disappointed with this book. I really enjoyed the first few books of this series and I was hoping this book would maintain the same standards.

About the romance:
I missed more interaction between the two main characters to explain the love affair. A more intimate connection.

Slow Burn is the story of Haddie Montgomery and Beckett Daniels.
Though readers meet Haddie and Beckett in The Driven Series this book truly is stand alone.
Rylee and Colton the stars of the Driven Trilogy make wonderful secondary characters in this book!

From the opening of the book it is clear the Becks wants Haddie but not just the sex she is willing to give; he wants all of her: “I want you strung so goddamn tight, you beg me to f&ck you, beg me to own you.”

This book is emotional and well I love Beckett, I love a man who knows what he wants and who fights it! And Becks knows he wants Haddie:
"Run all you want, Haddie...but you're going to find yourself all tangled up in those dangling ends you refuse to tie to something ..Whose going to rescue you then?"

Slow Burn has an outstanding use of secondary characters, Danny’s Haddie’s brother in laws hurts was epic and woven masterfully into the story
Also Trisha Daniels, Beckett's Mom was so filling with love
Here is a wonderful example of Trisha at work: "It's okay to use my boy when you need strength. His back won’t break if you do, but his heart just might if you don’t”……”My Becks here is a good man... I’m all for him ruining your lipstick, but if he ruins your mascara, you need to come let his mom know so I can put him back in his place."
Trish’s pink flip flop obsession was adorable - again not telling read the book!

Ms Bromberg is a master of catch phrases; these are so eloquently tied to the emotions in the book that just the mention of them after reading will evoke emotion from the reader.
This line will stuck with me for a long time to come! “Time is precious….. Waste it wisely” and“Hearts and heels” and “Haddie Maddie”…my heart… just typing them pulls me right back into the book.

The addition Walker, Beckett’s younger brother made for some witty and grin from ear to ear moments:
“Becks...you're sitting over there with your eyes closed, a stupid-ass smirk on your face, and you're adjusting your dick every five fucking seconds."
“So either you're remembering getting luck- and it seems like it was a good lucky- or else you're having some kind of pornographic wet daydream, and if that's the case, you're a sick fuck since you're doing it while I'm sitting right here."

As Becks and Haddie make their way to each other life throws them a curve ball and allow I want to sometimes throttle Haddie for her reaction to this it was so well done. I did love Becks so much for his reaction!

The party scene was epic!! I will not tell you what the party is for; read the book for that! It is so powerful and such a testament to Beckett’s unconditional love and support! Everyone woman deserves a man who loves her like this!

Thank you Ms Bromberg for a book about the power of love and the beauty that comes from taking what life gives you and pushing forward to a happy to grab a hold of!

Slow Burn. It is such an emotional roller coaster, and there is no one I would want to be at helm of that ride more than Kristy Bromberg. She spins the controls to the point that she has you caught up, twisted and screaming for release, though you know you will never remove yourself from the topsy turvy thrill the ride brings.

Slow Burn. It is a compilation of love, faith, hope, fear, determination, and survival. Ms. Bromberg captures each emotion with the tenacity that only she can bring to a story. With the strength of a million authors, but the ability that only she compasses.

Slow Burn. It is the tale that touches your heart, plays upon your emotions, causes you to hold your breath through each chapter and only will you be able to expel that breath when you read the words, "the end".

Ms. Bromberg has the uncanny ability to take two simple words, "we are" and make the most profound statement in any novel I have read to date. She has the knack to take "hearts and heels" and bring you to tears. She has the undeniable ability to make me like pink.

Haddie loses and Becks finds. Haddie fears and Becks calms. Haddie runs and Becks chases. Haddie falls and Becks catches.

I am not sure what book you are captivated by at this moment, but I implore of you to not wait, for "time is precious, but waste it wisely" by indulging in Slow Burn.

Slow Burn is a refreshing, sexy, indulgent erotic romance full of witty one-liners and angsty sexual tension. I was owned by K Bromberg from the very first chapter. Haddie and Becks drunkenly stumble into a no-strings-attached post-wedding one night stand. Sounds simple enough but it's clear going in that there might be more than just a physical attraction between these two. Checkered flags fly high screaming that this won't end well, feelings will tangle, lines will blur, hearts will break. But as Haddie and Becks do in their drunken haze, I quietly rooted for them to throw caution to the wind and get down to business. The dynamic between Haddie and Becks is so perfectly imperfect in this story. She's all serrated edges, he's smooth lines. But somehow they just fit deliciously together. They click. He does everything in his power to smooth her roughness, she focuses all her energy on making herself even more jagged as to not let him get close. The entire story is a tumultuous journey of push and pull, of succumbing to the glorious perfection that they are together, and then immediately pulling back from it.

I love a story written in dual first person narrative, but I especially love when each respective character is given their own exclusive voice. Being inside Becks' head was everything I hoped it'd be. Masculine and honest, sexy and real... and a drastic shift from being in Haddie's. Bromberg executes the tone and voice of her characters perfectly here, and I just loved being inside each of their minds equally. The pacing in this book is spot on as well. The two always seem to come together and flail apart at the most perfectly imperfect moments, peppering the story with pivotal benchmarks and driving the plot seamlessly. I just loved the timing, the twists and turns, the obstacles thrown in making this an angsty, bumpy ride. It all just flowed.

While there's no shortage of clever, witty dialogue, snarky banter and sarcasm, and it's certainly not lacking in sensuality, this story takes on an incredibly heavy, somber tone. It's gut-wrenching and emotionally taxing for the characters and the reader. There's such a strong undercurrent of grief and heartbreak as Haddie struggles to deal with her profound loss. As a reader who knows precisely what that loss feels like, to lose someone so close to you to such an ugly disease, I commend Bromberg for capturing that pain so exquisitely and delivering it to her readers with both realism and respect.

Haddie's heartbreak, her pain and her fears are so palpable in this story, I felt as though my heart was gripped in a vice for so much of it. She lives in a constant state of terror, as though she's waiting for the grim reaper to come knocking, and she insists that she's the only one home when he does. She's determined to never share her life, her hopes and dreams, and most especially her fears with anyone else because she's seen what this disease has done to those left in its wake. The big "C" is like a third entity in this story, the mistress keeping Haddie and Becks apart. Or rather, Haddie's deep rooted fears of the big "C" repeatedly gripping her and forcing her to push Becks away. I was so frustrated with her at times, wanting to shake her for being so back and forth with Becks, for refusing to let him in, for not being honest and continually forcing him away. But it was such an honest reaction to her very justified fears, that more than wanting to shake her, I just wanted to hug her.

Slow Burn is so much more than just an angsty, sexy romance. It's a brutally painful story of one woman's avoidance of an all too devastating reality. Slow Burn is a story of loss, of fear, of strength and, of course, a deep, intense, unconditional love. I lost count of how many times I caught myself laughing aloud, and, more, how many tears I shed. Haddie's fears and her denial, and her refusal to let anyone in, her exhausting ploys to block everyone out are just heartbreaking, multiplied exponentially for a reader like myself who's seen those fears first-hand. It brought back every emotion I could recall from a painful time in my own life, witnessing the diagnosis, struggle and ultimate loss of someone dear to me to such an unfair, terrible disease. I have to assume that K Bromberg knows that pain well herself, because she captured every single emotion perfectly, executing this story so superbly, painfully tugging at my heart with every word. Slow Burn is bittersweet. It isn't a light romance. It's about taking the good with the bad. It's about embracing every facet of what life throws at us, not just the stuff that makes us feel good. Life is beautiful, but it hurts, as Bromberg so eloquently demonstrates in this story, and without attacking the hard parts head on, with or without fear, we'd miss out on all the sweet beauty life has in store for us.

Full disclosure here, I wasn't a die-hard fan, as so many were, of previous books in the Driven series. But K Bromberg has just made a fan out of me with Slow Burn...an insatiable, hungry, rabid fan that now yearns for every written word she'll put forth from now on. I'm not sure what made Slow Burn feel different for me as a reader. The pacing, the tighter writing style, the refreshing character development, the emotional, evocative story line, maybe all of it. I'm not sure. But I know I'm in love. I have a newfound respect for Bromberg for delivering such a sexually charged, angsty romance that's as full of raw, heartfelt emotion, honesty and realism as it is with sensuality and sweet romance.

"No strings, Haddie. No ties, I remind myself."

description

Slow Burn is the fifth book in the Driven Series. Although it is standalone, I highly recommend reading the Driven Series Book 1-3 before you read this one. Haddie is Rylee's BFF and Becks is Colton's. Haddie and Becks met back when Rylee and Colton were just starting to get together. They took a trip to Vegas and boom! There was a smoking attraction between Haddie and Becks but they didn't act on it....yet!

Haddie is feeling lonely after Rylee and Colton's wedding. She knows it is a bad idea to lean on Becks to fill the need she has swallowing her up. But she just can't help it! These two end up finding comfort in each other.

"It was a onetime thing. Sex without strings. Exactly how I wanted it."-Haddie

Once the deed is done, they both know there is something more hanging between them. Haddie is determined to keep a distance between herself and Becks. Becks is determined to not just get Haddie back in his bed but take hold of her heart as well.

Haddie has been through hell. She has put a fortress around her heart and thrown away the key. Maddie has recently lost her sister. She is clinging to her niece for dear life and trying to maintain control over a dam that is dying to break. Although many might say her reason is foolish, I believe that everyone is entitled to their own type of crazy. She is struggling and doesn't know how to cope.

"It’s the emptiness and hollowness that resonate the loudest."-Haddie

description

Becks cannot figure out why Haddie is willing to fall into bed with him but keeps her heart guarded. Colton does a good job of offering advice.

“Welcome to the estrogen vortex, dude, where mindf*cks are the norm and understanding them is as common as a unicorn in your front yard.”-Colton

Colton has such a soft spoken way about him, doesn't he?

"I am going to make it so that Haddie Montgomery can’t resist me. Use the sex she seems to use as a shield around her to my advantage. Reel her in and then force her to understand that whatever the hell she’s running from she doesn’t have to worry about with me."-Becks

description

There is quite a bit of back and forth in this read. If you can't handle drama and angst then this book is not for you. Haddie takes a long time to come around. She makes some poor choices and you will want to give her a good hard smack at least once while reading this book. Becks doesn't give up. He continues to pursue her and remind her that he is there and he isn't going to go away!

“We are, Haddie. You’d best get used to that.”-Becks

When Haddie is able to lean on Becks and reveal her broken heart, things get beautiful pretty quick. Who doesn't love a hero that is hard headed and willing to keep fighting no matter what?

description

Overall, Slow Burn was a good book. I didn't love it like I did the first three in the series. But I still felt like it was a good HEA for Becks and Haddie and that made my heart happy! I also loved seeing Colton and Rylee together! The name of this book is truly the heart of their romance. It is a slow burn! But one that was well worth it in the end!

“Time is precious. Waste it wisely.”

2.5 stars

This book is a spin off from the Driven series, but can easily be read as a standalone. It is the story of Beck and Haddie, the respective best friends of Colton and Rylee from Driven and is an emotional friends-to-lovers romance with a surprising dramatic element.

Beck is Colton Donovan’s pit boss and right-hand man, and an all-round great guy. He’s sweet, kind and funny, with a bit of a dirty side, and he’s a wonderful romantic hero, I love him! Haddie is a bold, confident, no-nonsense kind of girl, but she has been left broken by the death of her sister from breast cancer a year previously. Feeling lost and still grieving, she is terrified of the potential to fall ill to the same illness that struck her mother and took her sister, and she refuses to allow anybody to get close to her in case they end up just as broken and destroyed as her and her sister’s family if something should happen to her.

Of course Beck and Haddie know each other, and it’s at Colton and Rylee’s wedding where they are serving as best man and maid of honor where things take a turn for them. They share a sizzling night together on the understanding that it’s one night only, but that’s not enough for Beck. He wants Haddie, and he lets her know that in no uncertain terms, but Haddie’s fear means that she refuses to engage in anything other than “no strings”. And so begins the battle that is both heartbreaking and supremely irritating.

The chemistry between Haddie and Beck is evident from the very beginning. They clearly want each other, and neither of them deny that, and though Haddie may try to avoid it, she can’t ignore the intensity of their passionate connection. But while Beck pushes her for more, she keeps insisting on no strings (to the point where, if I saw the term ‘no strings’ one more time while reading, I was prepared to hurl my kindle through a window), and we end up with a push and pull situation that goes on for pretty much the entire book.

“You don’t get to choose the people that care about you. You don’t get to make choices for others, tell them how to feel or, better yet, block them out because of what you think they’ll go through.

My heart ached for Haddie. She’s suffered so much with her sister’s death, and the impact of that loss on her life is immense. The emotion is really well written, and I could feel what she was going through. Her insistence on keeping people at a difference was understandable - she thinks she is doing the right thing, saving people from possible heartbreak, and I could absolutely see where she was coming from, but it was just too much! Especially when all she is doing is leaving Becks hurt and confused with not a clue what’s going on.

“All I know is that protecting someone from the truth is just another way of shutting them out.”

Becks is fantastic through it all. He is understanding and patient, and his persistence and determination to get through to Haddie and to get her to let him in and start living her life again was amazing. There are few men that would put up with the crap that Haddie put him through, and his gentle, loving nature was demonstrated over and over again.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

It makes for a beautifully romantic pursuit as Beck puts his heart on the line Haddie over and over again, fighting for the woman that he knows is meant be his.

“I don’t walk away from the people I love without a fight, and damn it to hell, Haddie Montgomery, you’d better prepare for that fight because I’m in love with you.”

When things were good between them, I really enjoyed their relationship. They are so sweet and they have a good time together, and the sexy time is off the charts hot. The good guy has a dirty mouth, and wow!

“Haddie, everything about you makes me want to beg to take you...to fuck you into oblivion so thoroughly that you forget your own name because you're so goddamn busy moaning mine.”

But those moments of good were so few and far between that I just ended up getting frustrated at all of the unnecessary drama that could have been resolved so much easier than it was, because Haddie’s back and forth drove me absolutely crazy! It’s one thing to keep secrets in order to ‘protect’ someone, it’s another thing entirely to lead them on, only to run away. Then open up to them, commit to them, and then run away again…. and then again. Over, and over again. OMG, I wanted to smack her so hard. She even made me start to get mad at Beck for putting up with her behaviour and continually chasing her! The guy deserves SO much better than what he got.

And then there’s a dramatic twist to the story that I wasn’t expecting, and that creates an emotional intensity that I really liked, but even that got dragged into the romantic drama, and for me, it was all too much.

There was also way too much time spent inside of the characters’ heads for me. Too much inner monologue, when I wanted more dialogue – to the point that I had to flick back a couple of pages to see what the last thing somebody said was after getting lost in the OTT thought processes leading up to the response. I ended up skimming a lot of Haddie’s repetitive thoughts as she processed everything that she was feeling over and over and over again. And then there was the over-use of metaphors which drove me mad in the Driven series and were continued here, and actually made me cringe.

“You’ve already knocked me out, but I’m still fighting. Take the chance. Bell’s about to ring.”

So while I was excited about the direction of the storyline, and there were elements of this story that I really liked, I wasn’t a fan of the writing style and I just couldn’t deal with the excessive relationship drama. The book had enough drama outside of the relationship to make this a beautifully heartfelt read without the unnecessary angst and frustration that defined the love story and ultimately tanked this book for me.

I wanted to love it, but it was just too much. 2.5 stars.

An AMAZING and EMOTIONAL masterpiece! Get the tissues ready, and prepare your heart for an emotional beating. K. Bromberg's brilliant writing, gripping storylines, and unbelievably captivating characters are just some of the reasons why she is a master of her craft. Her books consume me, obliterate me, and brings out emotions that I didn't even know I had. It's amazing that someone can bring me to my knees with her words alone, leaving me broken and emotionally drained. But at the same time, her words end up acting as an emotional blanket for me, cuddling me, and rocking me, telling me it will be okay, until finally when you see the two words you hate to see in a book like this, 'THE END', and I'm left in a state of pure bliss, and everything you went through, the emotional upheaval, was worth it. That my friends, is the experience I had while reading SLOW BURN. Did I scare you yet? I hope not, because as an avid romance reader, THAT is the definition of a MUST READ book.

Fans of the DRIVEN series by K. Bromberg have been waiting for this book for what seems like ages. Beckett Daniels, best friend to everyone's best book boyfriend Colton Donavan, finally gets his happily ever after. But it doesn't come easily for this amazing man we have all grown to love. Haddie Montgomery is what you would call a KICK ASS heroine. I absolutely adored her and I could relate to her on so many levels. She is NOT looking for a relationship at all. That is the absolute LAST thing she needs in her life, but the ever so sexy and caring Becks is a temptation she struggles to deny.

One night of pure, raw, intense passion changes EVERYTHING for them both. Once the line is crossed, there is no going back. The distraction that Haddie needs turns into so much more, and you can only live in denial for so long. Losing her sister broke her. It left her with a shattered soul and a broken heart. Beckett wants to be the man who can make her whole again, but Haddie is not making it easy for him. Tragedy is all she has ever known since the loss of her sister, but Beckett will show her how to live again, how to love again, and to take a chance on him.

Ok, now that I'm getting choked up again writing this review, I am reminded of the greatness that is K. Bromberg. This woman is a force, she is a master, and she is a genius at what she does. And what she does, is transports her readers to a beautiful world full of passion and romance; A world that is so hard to leave, a world that you will never want to escape, a world made up of your most precious dreams.

SLOW BURN was, in one word, perfection.

Okay, this book has totally f--ked me up. Why you ask? Well, for one thing, the subject matter. Everyone has their hard limits in a book. A subject for some reason or other you don't want to read about. This was a hard limit for me, but come on, it's K Bromberg. She brought us Colton for crying out loud, so I knew the book was going to be amazing. Once I realized what the story contained I sat for a long time trying to decide what to do...read it or don't read it. Here is the conclusion I came up with, one that I thought I could live with.

I admit this is probably a bad thing to do, but it's the ONLY way I could read this book. I needed to know that there was a happily ever after. That's it, that's the only way. So, (I can't believe I am telling you this), I skipped to the back of the book and read the ending. It . Was. The. Only. Way.
(Deep breath) Okay, so now that that is over I will say that Ms. Bromberg has outdone herself. She wrote an amazing book. This doesn't surprise me though.

Slow Burn was more on the serious side, with life events that no one wants to experience. She did it with grace and dignity. Anyone who knows me knows I have a cry rating. This one was a 3 for me. Snot not just on the sleeve, but all over my shirt, story induced stuffed up nose and headache. Yep, it was a tear jerker for me but I am a sap anyway.

‘It was a onetime thing. Sex without strings.’

Does it ever really work out that way? No. Those strings get you every f--king time.

'No strings, my a**. I feel like she threw a g*ddamn lasso around me and pulled it tight. No strings, yeah. . . but rope? She didn't say a f--king thing about any rope.'

And Beckett Daniels, holy sh*t, this man will light your freaking fire. I love his analogy on …. Well, just take a look.

'This is the problem with pu--y: When you want it you can't get it, and when you don't want it, you get it and then you can't get it out of your f--king head.'

I loved the back and forth between Beckett and Haddie. How he put up with her feistiness is beyond me.

'When it comes to men, there are only three moods to be had: f--k you, f--k off, and f--k me.'

I give Slow Burn 5 stars. It was everything you would expect from K Bromberg. Actually, I wasn't expecting this subject matter but because I am a HUGE fan, I read it and I'm glad I did. It will make you laugh, cry, blush and then cry some more. But for all you readers that are like me and have to have that HEA, keep reading! Congrats on an amazing book! ~ Stacey, 5 stars

F--k ‘em and chuck ‘em—Beckett “Becks” Daniels’ motto. Haddie Montgomery is drop dead gorgeous but off limits since meeting in Vegas. She’s Rylee’s best friend, Beck’s best friend, Colton’s wife. Off limits until one night. One night when he just can’t resist anymore.

Haddie Montgomery is just trying to get through life. Still crippled by grief from her sister’s death, Haddie is only interested in one night stands—no strings. Strings mean relationships and she’s not willing to open herself to a relationship.

“I remind myself I took my batteries out of my biological clock and put them in my vibrator for a reason.”

Until Becks. Maybe Becks can show her that love is worth it, worth fighting for, worth getting into the ring.

I met Becks and Haddie in the Driven series. And fell in love with them in Slow Burn. Becks is the consummate playboy—until the voodoo pu--y takes over. And Becks just doesn’t know what to do with himself. I loved his interactions with Colton. Colton's been down this path with his love, Rylee, and Colton giving Becks advice on love and understanding women is just too hilarious. Their friendship is true and real—just what Becks needs when trying to win Haddie’s heart.

Haddie feels like she has the weight of the world on her shoulders and doesn’t want to add to anyone’s burden—not her niece, Maddie, her brother-in-law, Danny, or her best friend, Rylee. She’s independent to a fault and you can’t help but want to hug her and slap her to make her realize “time is precious, waste it wisely.” ~ Missy, 5 stars

This book was very hard for me to read, mainly because of the story line. It was heartbreaking and unfortunately, with a very realistic subject.

After reading Colton's and Rylee story, I was sure that K. won't go easy on us for Becks story.. It had to have different topics to melt and break our hearts, all in the same time.
I was eager for Becks story, because he was perfect for me, cut from my perfection boy box and planted in a body. Yap, he had it all, the looks, the brains and the heart. OMG the heart.. He was one of the most loving and patient men I've ever seen and admired him for that.
After spending one passionate and intense night with Rylee's best friend Haddie, he felt a connection towards her that was hard to describe. He wanted her and put all his assets in the game in order to make her his.

Haddie on the other hand had other things in mind. She lost her sister 6 months ago in a battle with cancer, and the though that she might be sick as well was haunting her. That's why her refugee was sex without strings, in order to forget, just for a little while.
Becks was very persistent, feeling something unique about her, not forgetting the night they had, because it felt real and wanted to see if it was real for her too. Haddie kept him away, always pushing him aside because she didn't want to break his heart in case the cancer diagnosis was confirmed. She was guarded and afraid to fall in love, to be attached to somebody, because in the end it only generated pain and loss. When her worst fears were confirmed, she just shut down, blocking all feelings and ignoring the possibility that someone might still love and support her.

Here I was kind of conflicted. I was mad at Haddie for keeping Becks in the dark about her illness, for treating him kind of rude sometimes and for for opening up to him. But in the same time I understand her, because she considered it was her burden to bare and nobody's else. Maybe she didn't handled things correctly, but putting myself in her position, the answer is not very obvious to find.

5 stars for Becks and his love and determination. That is an example of a man that knows what he is fighting for and even when things gets bad he is there. He didn't felt pity for Haddie, he simply loved her and consider it enough. He wanted to love her, even when her chances were not so positive, but he preferred to have her beside him as that opposite of not having her at all. He is a true example of love, devotion, loyalty and unconditional affection, and he won my heart for it.

The story delivered a strong message that managed to make me cry and think about how lucky we are to be healthy. But even when a person suffers and needs somebody beside her, K. brought Becks to life, to show us exactly how unconditional and selfless love can be.

4 *WE ARE* Stars

I'm going to get my negative out of the way first. It is just one word: Haddie

I just didn't like her. I couldn't connect with her or her feelings most of the book. She came around some after like 85% but that was just too much of the book that she annoyed me for it to be saved. She was so back and forth. I get it, shit is going on in your life! I just couldn't really FEEL her or her love for Becks. Her decisions made me want to slap her a lot. Also I just read a book that kinda followed the same theme and so it made me a bit more salty toward her.

Positives:

BECKS

He knew what he wanted and went for it! I pretty much adored him.

I loved the side characters. Esp Danny. There was one scene toward the end that made my black heart weep!

Overall it was pretty good. A bit too much internal dialogue that had me skimming. If it wasn't for my love for Becks then it would be 2 stars.

"Time is precious, waste it wisely."

This is the first book I've read from K. Bromberg and I'm pretty sure it will be my last. I've had the other books in the Driven series on my TBR for awhile and jumped at the chance to read this when I saw it could be read as a standalone. It may have just been my mood or it could have been the author's style of writing, but something just didn't click for me with this one. I liked the premise, but never found myself caught up in the story or the characters.

Haddie lost her sister a year ago and she's had a hard time letting go. She throws herself at Beckett for a 'no strings' night of forgetting. Letting someone get close or having a relationship is just not an option for her. She sees her brother-in-law's struggle and won't put someone through that. Becks has had his eye on Haddie for awhile though, so he has other plans in mind. It becomes a back and forth struggle that becomes really repetitive. He chases, she submits, and then ultimately runs.

"Are we, or aren't we?"

The biggest thing that was missing was dialogue. The POV switches between Haddie and Becks and the majority of the story is their inner thoughts. Her freaking out in her own head and him trying to figure out how to get her to open up. There was a lot of thinking and not enough action, which left me bored and counting down the pages.

The best part of the book was definitely Becks, by far. He was the type of guy you would want to spend forever with. And his bromance with Colton was cute.

The driven world is one of my absolute favorite series. Getting a chance to to read the side characters stories...well that was a no brainer for me.

As much as I loved getting Haddie and Becks story, it was also not an easy read. This has one of those storylines that I have a hard time reading about and usually try to avoid. And yet, it was very much worth reading.

I loved Haddie. She is wild and crazy and played a great best friend role to Rylee in Driven. In Slow Burn we learn she has a lot of baggage and this book took us through it all.

Becks is awesome. He's one of the sweetest heroes. I don't normally go for sweet but I sure would go for Becks. He was perfect for Haddie. Get the tissues out for this one.

I laughed;
I swooned;
I cried.

Then I repeated it again and again.

K`s Driven series is one of my ALL time favorites; I`ve read it three times now so when I saw that she was publishing a continuation of Beck`s and Haddie`s story, I pretty much squealed like a little kid on christmas morning.

I adored this story and everything about it; K is a go to author for me cause her story telling and her writing style (in my opinion) is perfection ;D

Lovely BR with Stephanie & Alice; Thanks for the invite ladies ;x
