When Atlantis throttles Rhode into another place and time, she’s forced to keep her sea nymph identity a secret from unsuspecting mortals. Now fathoms from her realm and threatened by a vicious sea monster, she’ll require a ship to get back home.
The plan is simple: Find a crew. Stow away disguised as a cabin boy. And kill the captain once they reach the Mediterranean Sea. That was the plan. She couldn’t predict how difficult the latter would be as desires blur with needs in a battle for their lives.
Captain Calico Jack Rackham has made a name for himself as a harsh but righteous leader, earning his place at the helm of The Revenge.
Thus far, he’s avoided capture, until a mysterious beauty sneaks onto his ship, ensnaring him with her cunning nature. What starts as a devious plan to use her for his own gain blossoms into mythical discoveries and a journey into territory he never dreamed of crossing—a devotion far deeper than to the sea herself.

Let's take a moment to appreciate that the book is based on the true life of Captain Calico Jack and his pirate lover Anne Bonny. Jack lived in the 18th century. He broke the stereotypical life of Pirates at that time by having two female crew members on his ship, Mary Read and Anne Bonny.
So hats off to Spade for doing the research 💞💞💞💞
Rhode is a nymph from Atlantis. Something happened (probably in previous books) and she finds herself thrown not only in a different place but also a different time. She now has to travel from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean to go back to her family. Because of monsters lurking in the deep hunting nymphs and mermaids, Rhode disguises herself as a cabin boy on Captain Jack's ship... not that did her any good🤣🤣
Every character, main and side, in this book was equally amazing. Rhode (Anne) and Jack were neck to neck in their strength, humor, banter, hot chemistry, and thinking on their feet.
The plot was like the waves of the ocean: saving him, saving her, saving them, saving him, saving her....and so on. You are never bored.
I loved that Anne was the ancient one and Jack was the mortal I loved how Jack, egotistical as he is, listened to Anne and his crew I loved how the author was not afraid to push the boundaries of life and death. (that one scene 😭😭) I loved that the word "love" was not thrown haphazardly but rather it was their actions that showed how much they loved each other.
But most importanlty I loved how this book made me want to read all the books in the series and now i have them on my Kindle
This was like a throwback to the days when I craved a story about a swashbuckling pirate and a saucy wench to help put him straight. Ten stars if that wench were a new hire on said pirate’s ship and she portrayed herself as a cabin boy. The fact that Ms. Spade’s wench was actually from the depths of the sea prior to her false portrayal took this story to a whole new level and I loved every word of it!
This is filled with action and high seas adventure! (I just had to say that. LoL!) From the first page I was pulled in, intrigued by where this story was going and finding it impossible to put down. Jack and Anne were wonderful characters both separately and together. Their chemistry felt real and the development of their relationship was on par with their circumstances. The ship’s crew added so much to this story. They were fun and cranky, hard workers, a little tipsy on occasion and had me laughing more than I expected. I loved each and every one of them and wished I had more of this motley group.
Despite being a lengthier book, this was a fast read. The pace never slowed down and the storyline was constantly evolving. With humor, danger, and suspense this story, hands down, deserves all the stars!
I am always looking to step outside of my normal reading box, and was glad to receive"Of Magic & Rum". I will say, I think this is my first pirate + nymph book that I have read as an adult. 🤭
With this book you have Jack, who is a pirate so it's only right that most of the book takes part at Sea. There is lots of action-packed moments throughout the book which keeps it entertaining and moving. But wait!! Also on board we have a nymph-in- disguise, Anne. I did like how there was an equal balance between pirate and nymph/Greek mythological life.
I did feel like the characters weren't really relatable. We know through descriptions what characters are like, but it really wasn't shown throughout the book. I felt like I really didn't know them. The reason why they fell in love was a little blurry & flat and happened immediately. Jack is a cocky pirate and Anne is a snarky nymph, but their personalities were SO similar. Maybe that is why they did?.. or fascination on one being human vs a mythical creature?... not sure.
Also, mermaid vs nymph is discussed early on, but later a merman is mentioned with a nymph characteristic 🤔. (Could be just in ARC)
There were a few twists throughout the book, some predictable, but it was still an cute read.
Thank you to The Realm Studios & Carly Spade for the eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.❤️
This was a tail of love with a sea nymph and a pirate - and a bloody good one at that. I was lost for a little in the beginning, and wish we had a little more backstory as to why Anne was being chased, but it all came together towards the end, and the waters cleared up just a tad.
With this being a pirate and mermaid (or should I say sea nymph) retelling of Captain Calico Jack and Anne Bonny, there was lots of adventure and plundering to be had. While I had know little bits and pieces of Calico Jack's story, I didn't know much about Anne Bonny. But after looking up information about her, I have a new appreciation to all the subtle head nods that are in this book pertaining to BOTH of their stories and histories.
While there are a few close calls in this book, and a few people had been lost, I am overall happy with how it all ended. My only wish was that we got to see Jack for a little longer in the epilogue, but I am happy that we got to get a glimpse of Atlantis at the end.
Their tail of love and heartbreak is one that I will not forget soon, and it also has me going down a rabbit hole learning about pirates that I didn't even know about.
I felt like I waited an eternity for Rhode’s book (I might be a tad dramatic😂) but this one really delivered for me. I loved the pirate theme based off of a real life pirate, Calico Jack, and the way everything tied together to give us the perfect spinoff in the Contemporary Mythos world. The fiery romance between Rhode and Jack was perfect from their first encounter, and I loved watching their relationship grow. I did have a favorite little side character, Laust, and would love a little spinoff chapter on his endeavors.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️ Pacing: Fast Favorite Character: Jack
*An arc was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.
This book ended up being a very high 3 stars (between that and a low 4 stars), and I think it could have been higher for me if it wasn't Anne Bonny and Jack Rackman's story...
I have very clear image of them in my head, and these two people don't fit it and it left me a bit disappointed - they're more flirty and have a fun vibe and that's not what I want from them... and Jack is way too Captain-y to be the Jack I know and love, he's too sure of himself (which I expect from Jack but in a less cool way).
All of this said, I liked the second half of the book better, because Anne and Jack's partnership met what I expected from them better, their personalities still conflict in my brain, but the way they support and work together is really good, this commitment to be partners is essential to who this duo this!!!
Now this duo is never just a duo, because Mary Read exists and I LOVE her with my entire heart!!!! Do I also have less preconceived ideas about her? Yes... but I really like her banter with Jack and the way they're partners in that crew as well, and then the way Mary and Anne trust each other and also partners in a world of men - I LOVE her and them!!! And also thinking of the ending, I need a novella about that and Mary, and I need to cry my eyes out.
Also for some reason I hadn't realized the main character, the nymph, would be Anne... I thought we were going to get an outside look into their relationship, so nymph Anne was a surprise, and while I like her relationship with piracy and humanity and fitting into this new society, I wish we still had a bit more nods to historical Anne, and I feel like her being a Selkie instead was right there, the myth around the skin could connect well to the abuse she suffered from her ex-husband, and could lead to her childhood being closer to the truth as well.
Overall, this was a really fun, action packed romance with strong character and relationships, and I think it's perfect if you love pirates - just be warned that if you have a Jack and Anne in your brain, try to throw that image away before picking this up.

Dive into the world of sea nymphs, pirates, and mythic lore in Of Magic and Rum! This one has everything you need for an epic romantasy voyage: a badass nymph from Atlantis, a dashingly roguish pirate captain, and the high-stakes drama of keeping secrets at sea. 🌊💀
Imagine this: a fierce sea nymph from Atlantis, Rhode (now incognito as “Anne”), winds up in 18th-century pirate land after being literally flung through time and space.
Her mission? Find a way home by hitching a ride on a pirate ship and maybe slicing the captain’s throat on her way out. Easy, right?😏
Well, not when the captain in question is none other than the dangerously charming Calico Jack Rackham, who’s got more swagger than a full treasure chest.💎
🏴☠️Jack’s tough, ruthless, and he may or may not have a soft spot for a certain mysterious “cabin boy.”
But here’s the kicker—when he figures out who Anne really is, he’s all in, claws and all.
Oh, and did I mention he’s got a cat?🐱 Because, yes, our tough pirate captain has a heart hidden behind all that grit, and let’s just say sparks fly and swords clash with every encounter.
Their chemistry? Off the charts. 🔥
🧜♀️Rhode might be an immortal sea nymph, but this crew becomes the family she never knew she needed. Together, they face mythical beasts, pulse-pounding sea battles, and a connection deeper than any ocean.
And Jack? He’s charming, confident, and only a little egotistical—which just makes it all the more satisfying when Rhode brings him to his knees. 😈
If you're craving pirate adventure, swoon-worthy romance, and laugh-out-loud banter, Of Magic and Rum will steal your heart like Jack’s stolen treasures.⚓️
I loved Of Magic & Rum so so much!!! When Atlantis throws Rhode into the eighteenth century she is determined to find a way home so she sneaks onto a pirate ship where Calico Jack is the captain. They both want to use each other for their own gain but along their dangerous journey they find out sometimes fate knows what it’s doing. I’ve been wanting this book since Poseidon and it was definitely worth the wait, I basically read it in one sitting! This book has pirates, sirens, sea nymphs, action, and a Greek mythology twist. I love the plot and journey, but I especially love Rhode and Jack. Rhode is definitely a badass and is not willing to take anyone’s crap. She also is caring while doing what needs to done. It’s amazing how she finds a new family on a pirate ship and she wholeheartedly accepts that this is where she’s meant to be. Then there’s Jack, who has earned his reputation, being very charming and confident while being fair but also a ruthless pirate captain when he has to be. Plus he has a cat so you can’t help but love him. I adore how they go from strongly disliking each other to falling deeply in love. Plus their banter is magnificent! This book is simply incredible and I love everyone aboard The Revenge, including their new addition along the way! The pirate atmosphere and the Greek twist had me hooked, when Rhode’s family shows up is awesome. If you haven’t read the books in this world yet I highly recommend you do!!

Of Magic and Rum is an unputdownable pirate romantasy. Think Calico Jack x Anne Bonny Historical reimaging but a lot more epic 🤩
I enjoyed this book so much! Jack and Anne are the best! The tension, angst, slow burn, and the secrets - it had me hooked until the last page. I thought that mermaids were cool, but after reading this book, I want to be a nymph instead.
Everything about this book is so good. The moment I started reading, I was thrown aboard a pirate ship and couldn't help but imagine Pirates of the Caribbean (one of my favorite movies). The magic and adventure brings such a thrill and the excitement of finding a treasure is palpable.

Many thanks to RR Book Tours for having me on the book tour and to the author for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was provided an ARC of this title for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Anne Bonny & Calico Jack. The sea nymph and the pirate. Rhode and Jack Rackham.
Wherein a sea nymph finds herself on the shores of the Republic Of Pirates 1719 on a desperate mission to return home, overhears a group of pirates discussing their next planned journey which will conveniently sail them exactly where she wants to go, and disguises herself as a boy to sneak aboard their ship and ride that wave as far as it will take her.
(She’s a sea nymph, not a mermaid, though there are mermaids and sirens also mentioned throughout the book.)
Straight away, Calico Jack marks the new cabin boy as a woman, but being the cunning and calculated pirate that he is, saves that knowledge for the most opportune moment and uses it full to his advantage— which you’ll find to become something of a pattern.
Later on, she swears an oath to Calico Jack and The Revenge, and they take her on as a part of the crew. A high seas adventure with no shortage of action continues, with danger behind every wave and a tightrope of secrets to walk.

I’ve wanted to read a fantasy book about mermaids and pirates for so so long so when I got the email to sign up for this baby I couldn’t resist. It is the perfect blend of adventure, fantasy and love. The push and pull between the two main characters was delicious, they are funny, relatable and overall adorable.
The writing style in this book is absolutely splendid—smooth, engaging, and incredibly easy to follow. From the very first page, you're hooked, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat with adrenaline-pumping moments throughout the entire read. The pacing is perfect, making it hard to put down as each chapter pulls you deeper into the world of high-seas adventure and drama.
If you're in the mood for a gripping tale filled with daring escapades, intense rivalries, and a sprinkle of romance to spice things up, this book will not disappoint. The plot is rich with twists and turns, blending elements of danger, mystery, and intrigue that keep you guessing until the very end. Whether you're a die-hard fan of pirate stories or just looking for an action-packed adventure, this book is a must-read! The vivid descriptions of ocean battles and pirate life make you feel like you're right there on the ship, living the adventure alongside the characters. Highly recommend it for anyone craving a thrilling journey on the high seas!
I received a free advance review copy and am sharing my honest thoughts voluntarily.
Let me start by saying that I actually enjoyed the story itself. I have been craving a mermaid fantasy since early spring and Carly Spade delivered. I firmly believe this would have been a higher rating if it had been through another round of edits (and maybe it will, this is an ARC) and a finer toothed comb for catching grammar mistakes.
Now, the positive. I liked the characters and the plot! It was a quick moving and all of the strings felt tied up at the end. We had a satisfying ending and certainly the ending I think they all deserved. Except for Duke lol.
The reason I am giving it two stars is because at this point, it feels unfinished. There are sentences that just don’t mean anything. There is one instance I as so thrown out of the plot because I reread on sentence four times and still had no idea what it was trying to say. It wasn’t just that one instance, it happened a few times.
The romance between Anne and Jack happened a tad bit fast and with a lot off page. It’s like they both woke up one day and were in love. This is personal preference, but the tension really hadn’t built up yet. Also, at the end she makes him into a merman who can have legs but she said in the beginning mermaids can’t have legs, only nymphs can. That was just a detail that stood out to me. (Maybe mermen can have legs? Maybe I misread?)
The last thing here is silly but I have to say it, Anne keeps calling herself a mythical being. By definition, mythical exists only in imagination or fiction when she herself is very real. I’m not going to hammer in on that one, it just stood out to me when reading.
Overall, I really did enjoy the story and I applaud Carly Spade for deviating away from the normal fae/vampire/werewolf love story and giving merpeople a whirl. It was a quick read for me! It was different compared to what I normally grab and I was happy to read it. If Spade writes anymore on these characters, I would most certainly continue reading their adventures. I walked away from the book feeling positive and thinking, “okay, that was cute.”

I think I have my new favorite book from you now, Carly! This was just EXCELLENT!
If you’ve ever watched Pirates of the Caribbean or especially maybe more recently Black Sails, then you’ve gotta pick up this pirate set romantasy! I ADORED Jack and Anne together! There is fantasy, mythology, action and danger, pirates, gold, found family, and a swoony romance.
I love all the books set in Carly's Mythos series and it's so great to get some new stories mixed into the overall world. I absolutely loved Anne's progression from Rhode to truly embracing and becoming Anne in all ways. She and Jack were just so great together, excellent chemistry and banter!
Another thing I always love about Carly’s books is her strong female friendships. This is no exception with the friendship between Mary and Anne. And I'm so here for a queer normative world, too! One of the things I love about pirates lol. I also really liked that there was a nice mix of actual pirate history in this one (with watching Black Sails I've been doing some reading on the famous pirates and Jack and Anne and Mary are all at the top of the lists!)
I loved this and if you’ve been reading other pirate romances this year, make sure you get this on your radar too!
I received a copy for an instagram tour. My thoughts are my own.
This book was quite a bit disappointing to me. And that's sad because it had so much potential to be SOOOOO good. I mean, it's a mythology and pirate retelling...that's so cool!! But this book just fell flat for me.
I didn't care about the characters, they weren't real enough for me. I wasn't made to feel anything for them. And I am such a character-driven reader, you need to make me feel for the character for me to care about anything they're going through. I just wish there was more dimension and personality to these characters. I should be falling in love with the characters right alongside them.
Did love the cat references… I love a cat side character. And just cats in general.
And I don't know if this truly counts as enemies to lovers, because there really wasn't true hatred between the two, more like annoyance. And that still gave us some fun moments FOR SURE!
Thanks to BookSirens for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
A pirate’s life for me This was such a great and unexpected read. The characters are so well developed, each one unique and interesting. The interactions between them shows their personalities and nuances brilliantly, letting you get to know each one better as you read. Jack and Rhode (Anne) sparked perfectly, their push-pull chemistry and repartee kept me entertained and busy turning pages. I loved the nymph magic elements, the humour, the action, the fantasy, the steam, the romance, the drama and adventure. Jack was definitely a pirate, but he is one with honour, drive and determination; one who took on any worthy crewmate regardless of race, creed, colour or gender, and he always, always had a plan. Plus Truffles was adorable. It is actually my introduction to Ms Spade’s work but I now have a whole treasure chest to add to my TBR.
✅ Pirates ✅ Centuries old FMC ✅ Sea Monsters ✅ Adventure ✅ If Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth got together
OMG this book had me in its grasp!! Rhode is mysteriously ripped from Atlantis and ends up in a different place and time. While trying to get home and keep her identity a secret, she dresses as a boy and joins the crew of Jack Rackahm’s ship.
The life of a pirate suits her 😏
I honestly couldn’t put this one down!!! It mixes fantasy, romance, and historical fiction in the best way possible 😍 If you like Pirates of the Caribbean and fantasy, this one is for you!
I will for sure be diving into the Contemporary Mythos series ASAP because this world is so well written! 😍
*Thank you to Carly Spade and The Realm Studios for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion*

Absolutely sensational from start to finish! I devoured this book, if I had the time to I would have read it in one sitting! The characters are written so well and I fell in love with them all so easily. The story is written brilliantly, characters interacting the way I always want them to in books, especially after the hidden identity/miscommunication trope has come into effect. If you want a fun and exciting time then I highly suggest this book!!
This was a fun spin on Calico Jack with magic, mythology, and romance!
The writing is fun, fast paced, and relatable even though it’s set in 1700s Nassau. I absolutely adored every character. Anne was fun and determined. Jack was SO fun - he’s one of those goofs I would want to befriend in real life. The cat companion was just the cherry on top. ALL of the crew characters were well-developed. The magic mixed with mythology was unique- I really enjoyed how the story pulled from multiple mythos. The romance was full of tension and spice (so this is def an adult book).
I need more of Jack and Rhode!!
Thank you RR Book Tours and the author for the gifted eARC
Thank you to the Realm Studios and Carly Spade for an ARC of this book!
Unfortunately, this is going to have to go on the “come back later” shelf. I will update this review when I do.
Overall, the story itself is not bad! I truly think this is an issue of I cannot get into the story line. After chapter 5, the characters are decently written, the overall story has just felt slow to me. There has been a lot of focus on one character, but not the other, despite the POV switches. This is truly nothing negative to reflect the author, it’s just not grabbing my attention as much as I need at the moment.
Eeeek this is an easy 5 stars for me! This book DELIVERED 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I loved this book so much, the banter and chemistry between Rhode & Jack is UNMATCHED. They are quite literally made for each other and I need this book to be 10000 pages longer.
This book was full of action & sea adventure and I loved every minute. Every single character in this book had a place, I loved the whole crew and so many moments in this book had me laughing out loud. I also loved that SHE is the ancient immortal one, throwing herself in harms way for HIM👀
Also - I love that this book was also based off the REAL Calico Jack & Anne Bonny. If you don’t know get to know!! This also scratched my pirates of the Caribbean itch lol 🏴☠️
Jack & Anne have become some of my favourite characters to read this year & I will certainly be checking out more of miss Spades work because WOW 🤩

Pirate Romance was a new genre for me to hop into, but it DELIVERED.
Of Magic and Rum was funny, cutesy, romantic and full of action and adventure. It’s quite literally everything a girl could ask for in a pirate romance.
And as an added bonus, there was so much Greek Mythology wrapped up into the story. Sea Creatures, Deities and Sea Witches scattered across the story made it such a fun read!
Plus who doesn’t love a kitty companion? Honestly, Truffles was the best character in the book, no joke 🤣🐈
This was a beautiful mythological inspired pirate romance. It ticked all the boxes for a pirate romance. A cheeky and dashing pirate MMC and fierce, mermaid/sea nymph FMC, sword fights, sea monsters, pirateship battles, banter and only one hammock 😏. I loved the romance between these two and all of the crazy adventures they had. It also included a hilarious found family. Having read the other contemporary mythos books, it was nice to see some other characters make an appearance to round off the story. A must-read if you like pirate romance with some Greek mythology.
I could not out this book down!! It had the right mix of little mermaid, pirates, Greek mythology, and tension. Rhode has to flee the sea when she is chased by a mythical creature in a time and area she is unfamiliar with. She overhears Calico Jack telling his crew of their new adventure and stows away with them hoping it will bring her home. Once she takes the pirate oath her her life changes and the fun really begins. I didn’t want this book to End and can only hope we get to see more of these two. But seriously if you love pirates you should check this out.
I have forever been obsessed with the stories of Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, and many other pirates, and always wished for a different outcome in their lives.
True to a Carly Spade book, it's fun, witty and filled with colorful characters. The romance is spectacular, and two of my all time favorite historical figures get a mythological reimagining worthy of the gods.
I would have given this book 10 starts if I could have.
Thank you to the Realm Archive and Carly Spade for allowing me to read this ARC!
I really wanted to like this book. The premise and summary were interesting and I was crossing my fingers to get this one. Unfortunately, I was ready to DNF 25% in. This feeling lasted the whole book, but I felt like I owed it a chance for an honest review at the very least.
Let’s talk about a few positives! This was a fun take on a romantasy story! I liked the inclusion of Greek mythology, and the way Anne was able to shift between her human and nymph forms.
Now for the negatives. Buckle in! The writing felt rushed and choppy. There was so many random expressions that yanked me out of the experience because they didn’t make any sense (my nostril bounced?!), or felt like a fever dream. Nothing takes me out of a historical setting like modern lingo and terms. I don’t get weirded out much when it comes to certain romance tropes, but some scenes made me physically cringe. The characters had no depth, and there was no arc for any of them throughout the story. And speaking of the story, did anything even happen?! The obstacles they faced were so boring and bland. They didn’t even make it to their original destination until the last page of the epilogue.
Honestly, this whole book feels unedited, and poorly planned; as if the author was just making it all up as she went. Not worth the 8hrs I forced myself to get through.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really enjoyed this pirate and sea nymph romantasy! The quick moving plot, action scenes, and the banter between the characters was quite engaging. I also loved the found family theme in the story. This is a fun, quick read perfect for readers who don’t want a story with a complicated magic system or heavy world building.
I loved this book. I loved how much action there was and the push and pull throughout the entire book was fantastic. I loved the two main characters as well as the side characters. The main characters were relatable and funny and had a flaw that helped the story move along. I loved the cat; he was the perfect side kick. I would love to read more books like this. 5 out of 5 stars, loved it.

I devoured this book…it hooked me from the beginning! I loved the found family and the touch on mythology, perfect addition to the story! Can’t wait to read more books connected in this world of mythology!
