Willow asks the universe to find her The One, but will she recognise him when he appears? When Willow moved back to the village she grew up in for a new start, she was ready for a new way of life too. Now happily settled in her dream cottage with her beloved dog Spud, Willow enjoys the peace and sense of community country living brings.
That is until her quiet is shattered by her new neighbour. Sure brooding Henry Darcy, or Doctor Dishy as Willow’s best friend Abby calls him, may be easy on the eye, but it doesn’t take long for the new neighbours to discover that they don’t agree on anything.
Where Henry does science, Willow does nature. Where Henry does minimalism, Willow does multicolour. When Willow asked the universe to manifest her perfect man, either she wasn’t specific enough, or Henry isn’t it.
But when Willow tries again and a new man arrives in the village, has fate got it right this time and delivered her The One, or does she need to look closer to home…

What readers say about Maxine
‘First time reading any of Maxine’s work and blumin nora it was brilliant!!!! I have huge black eye bags from staying up WAAAYY past my bedtime because I simply could not put this book down. Beautifully written! I fell in love with both characters instantly. Can’t wait to download Maxine’s other novels and get started tonight!!’
‘Another amazing story from Maxine Morrey. So beautifully written, lovely characters, the whole Book feels like a warm hug. I couldn’t put it down!’
‘Just Do It had the perfect blend of a gorgeous, lovely man, a very likable main character and a detestable villain, mixed with feelings of love, sorrow and humour. I absolutely loved it and definitely recommend it!’
‘I love Maxine's books and this one is no exception. I loved the title of this book and hoped it would as good as it sounded. In fact, it was amazing. A lovely, cosy read for those winter nights.’
‘Maxine has an easy-going writing style that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Maxine's books often feels more like a chat between friends rather than reading a book.’
Maxine has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember and wrote her first (very short) book for school when she was ten. Coming in first, she won a handful of book tokens – perfect for a bookworm!
As years went by, she continued to write, but ‘normal’ work often got in the way. She has written articles on a variety of subjects, as well as a book on Brighton for a Local History publisher. However, novels are what she loves writing the most. After self publishing her first novel when a contract fell through, thanks to the recession, she continued to look for opportunities.
In August 2015, she won Harper Collins/Carina UK’s ‘Write Christmas’ competition with her romantic comedy, ‘Winter’s Fairytale’.
Maxine lives on the south coast of England, and when not wrangling with words loves to read sew and listen to podcasts. As she also likes cake she can also be found either walking or doing something vaguely physical at the gym.
Willow lives her dream life in her cottage in a small town with her little dog, Spud, after having lived for too long in London and growing tired of the rat race. Enters Dr. Darcy, who buys the cottage next door and needless to say, the don't get along. The renovation works are too noisy and worst of all, he decides to put fake grass on the garden, while Willow takes pride in her garden, that she tends to persnoally and lovingly.
As many Pride and Prejudice's rewriting this one was bit boring at first, but I really enjoyed it when the charachter who's supposed to act as Whickam, Dr. Wise, joins the clinic where Darcy works. This adds a much waited and needed clash between Willow and Henry Darcy, who had got along untile then, without going much further though.
There's nothing bad but nothing outstanding as well in the novel. If you like small town closed romance novel this is for you, and it comes out on July 16th!

My Thoughts : We meet Willow, having been recently divorced she has left London and moved back to the village she grew up in with Spud, her beloved dog. She enjoys the quiet life in her cottage with her beautiful garden to sit in and she has a freespirited nature. When new neighbour Doctor Henry moves in next door her peace is shattered and it seems Henry is far from her ideal man, hes starts by digging up all the trees and plants in his garden and Willow is horrifed. Although Henry is handsome, he is far from any man Willow wants to meet or get to know. Soon as they get to know each other, there is undeniable chemistry there and When Willow starts to show him around the village their friendship grows. Can Willow see past his faults or is she she happy staying alone!?. I really enjoyed reading about Willow and Henry, and watching their characters develop and learning about what brought them to where they are now. As usual some great descriptive scenery and surroundings of the village to call home. Maxine Morrey has always been one of my go to Authors. Her writing style is always invested in her characters and shows empathy. Looking forward to more stories soon.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, it was just a lovely heart warming and romantic read. I loved Willow and Spud and could almost imagine myself sitting in the garden with them. Henry Darcy is just a perfect name for her next door neighbour who was lovely. The ending was exactly what I wanted to happen(no spoilers) and I would love a sequel to this story to see what happens next for Willow. Thanks to NetGalley, Maxine Morrey and Boldwood Books for an advance copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
This was a gentle, slow paced romance set in a small rural town in the South West. Willow left her life and job in London and returned to her home town in search of peace and happiness which she found it in her Victorian cottage, her garden and her new business. Then her peace is shattered when the adjoining cottage is sold and she gets a new neighbour. He rips the heart out of the house and the garden and puts down artificial grass, she is outraged but Henry doesn’t take it kindly when she gives her opinion of his behaviour. They don’t hit it off and it seems unlikely that they ever will, they have nothing in common, yet. I have read all the author’s books and loved them, they have drama, romance and passion, however from my perspective, this story has less impact than the others. Don’t get me wrong it is a nice story but it is not one of my favourites.
Be Your Best Self is another charming and heartfelt love story by the talented Maxine Morrey.
Maxine’s books always put a smile on my face and made me feel all those wonderful, warm and cozy feelings. She is a master at writing charming, heartfelt stories filled with real and relatable characters, a story that will take you to unexpected places, and a romance that will sweep you off your feet. I enjoyed this book. It has all that charm and warmth that I’ve come to expect from Maxine’s books. This is an easy book to sink into and really is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. As always, I finished this book in one sitting. The first explosive meeting between Willow and Henry hooked me in, and I wanted to see how this opposites attract, enemy neighbours to lovers’ love story would unfold. I really enjoyed the ride this book took me on. I am a sucker for a small-town English romance, and this book reminded me why I love that trope so much. Maxine captures that small-town charm and quirkiness perfectly. I love the warmth and laughter that you often get with small-town romances. I also want to say that I absolutely adored Spud. That sweet little dog just added the right amount of charm and comic relief to the story.
Willow and Henry were great main characters. They definitely have that opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine trope-y feel to their relationship. Willow is a happy, carefree, green witch. Ok, she isn’t actually a witch, but she does natural remedies to help cure common ailments, which has earned her the name green witch. She loves plants and animals and really is a delightful individual. I loved the whole “magical” element of this story. Willow tried to ask the universe to have the perfect man come into her world. The next thing she knows, Henry is her neighbour, and she realizes that even though he may look like the perfect man for her, his personality and interests don’t match. It was absolutely heart-warming and fun watching as she interacted with Henry. Their relationship definitely gets off to a bumping start, but watching as Willow’s charm slowly melts those walls around Henry was wonderful. I liked Henry; he isn’t the typical hero that Maxine writes. Henry is very reserved and guarded. But underneath that guarded exterior is a man who truly is a kind and loving person. I loved peeling those layers back.
The romance is sweet, and I ate up every moment Henry and Willow were together. I will admit that I am not a fan of love triangles. Lol, I try to avoid them at all costs. But the love triangle in this book wasn’t too bad. I think it’s because I knew that Henry and Willow were meant to be together, and I just say Calvin’s character is an obstacle that they needed to overcome in order to be together. Like all of Maxine’s books, the romance is wonderfully written, and there is such a wonderful connection between Willow and Henry. I really did love these two to bits.
You will adore this book if you are a fan of grumpy sunshine, opposites attract, love triangles, and charming small-town romances.
Be Your Best Self is a delightful, heartfelt romance and a perfect afternoon read for this summer.

📚MY RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ (Rounded up to 5⭐)
📚MY REVIEW:
No need to scroll up and be sure you're in the right place... Yes, this is still my account. Yes, this is the second rom-com I've read in less than a month. And yes, I'm surprised by this turn of events too. 😂❤️😂
Honestly, rom-coms just make me feel good. I smile. I laugh. I feel life's stresses melt away as I get pulled into an often cheesy and predictable love story. They are the perfect palate cleansers for all the thrillers that terrify me.
I was drawn to Morrey's latest book because it's advertised as an uplifting rom-com. I'm happy to tell you -- the book was exactly as advertised!
I loved this book's female MC, Willow, whose somewhat jaded ideas and beliefs about finding Mr. Right are lovably endearing. This book features everything you want in a rom-com: the MC's return to her small hometown in England after a failed marriage; a super supportive best friend and her husband, madly in love for 15 years, whose romance is the envy of our MC; a hot new doctor in town who just so happens to move into the house next door to our MC; and plenty of "no way" & "not on my life" attitudes from our MC and hot new neighbor doc about their fated romance.
As it is with pretty much every rom-com (well, in the two I've read recently), you know how this one is going to turn out before you even finish the first chapter. But do we care? No. No we don't. The fun is in all the pages leading up to our anticipated ending... And this one definitely brought the fun!
Be Your Best Self kept my interest, made me laugh, and was a really fun & fast read. Today was a perfect sunny summer afternoon for sipping a Paloma on the patio, and this was the perfect read for that sunny summer afternoon! A huge thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
I can always count on a Maxine Morrey novel to take me away to picturesque settings and compelling characters. Henry and Willow's story is funny and heartwarming. It's about learning to love thy neighbor, even if they take some getting used to.
I have a deep appreciation for nature, but for Willow, it's more than just appreciation—it's a way of life. From her stunning garden to her earthy style, Willow embodies a true connection with the natural world that is both inspiring and grounding. She's not the flashy type. She's honest, compassionate, and everyone in her small town loves her... except her new next-door neighbor, Dr. Henry Darcy.
Henry, a meticulous and introverted doctor, longing for a tranquil existence, finds himself facing an unexpected predicament when he moves next door to a beautiful, free-spirited, bohemian woman named Willow and her little dog, Spud. Henry has multiple layers and it is intriguing watching Willow melt them away. What I like most about him is he's a gorgeous man, but he doesn't flaunt it. In fact, he's a little vulnerable at times which is sexy as hell.
The stark contrast between the two characters sets the stage for a series of comical and endearing encounters that ultimately lead to a sweet bond. Henry's initial reluctance to embrace Willow's unconventional presence in his life leads to a series of amusing misunderstandings and mishaps that left me chuckling. Through a delightful sequence of events, Henry and Willow gradually learn to appreciate each other's unique qualities and find common ground. They discover that true friendship and love can blossom in the most unexpected places and that old dog's can learn new tricks.
I love Willow's Hospital for Teddy Bears and Poorly Dollies. What a lovely business of repairing and restoring precious toys for young and old alike, though I have doubts someone could make a living at it.
If you love feel-good stories celebrating the magic of small town life, laughter, love, friendship, and adorable dogs, then this book is the perfect choice for you.
Thank you to Ms. Morrey for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

My Opinion
Be Your Best Self was a lovely read. I am definitely a fan of Maxine Morrey so I am always happy when there is a new release and this was a great addition to the catalogue. Willow and Henry are two very different characters but together they can both grow. Overall this was a lovely relaxing book that is going to make for a great holiday read.
Opposites attract in this charming romantic comedy from award-winning author Maxine Morrey: Be Your Best Self.
Willow has moved back to the village she grew up in for a fresh start and a new way of life. With a fresh outlook and a determination to find inner peace and harmony, Willow is loving her new life living in a gorgeous cottage with her adorable dog, Spud. Country living suits Willow down to the ground, however, her new life is soon threatened by the arrival of Doctor Henry Darcy who brings all her serenity and tranquility crumbling down around her ears!
All her friends might be head over heels in love in love with Doctor Dishy, but Willow is far from impressed! The two are like chalk and cheese and clash whenever they are in the same room together for more than ten seconds! Willow intends to give her new neighbour as wide a berth as possible and as luck would have it, a new man has just arrived in the village who seems to be absolutely perfect for her. But should Willow pin all her hopes and dreams for the future on the new arrival? Or is her happy ending closer to home?
Maxine Morrey’s Be Your Best Self in a delightful romantic comedy that will touch your heart and make you giggle. Willow is a terrific heroine and her quest for happiness is one that will have you cheering, laughing and wiping away a tear or two. Fun, feel-good and fabulous, Maxine Morrey’s Be Your Best Self is a superb romantic read perfect for a lazy afternoon!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The novel “Be Your Best Self” by Maxine Morrey invites readers to embrace love, community, and the unexpected. With charming prose and relatable characters, she encourages us all to "Read Yourself Happy."
Meet Willow. When she moves back to her childhood village for a fresh start, she's ready for a new way of life. Settled in her dream cottage with her beloved dog Spud, Willow enjoys the peace and sense of community that country living brings. But her quiet existence is shattered by her brooding neighbour, Henry Darcy (or "Doctor Dishy," as Willow's best friend Abby calls him). While Henry does science, Willow does nature; where he embraces minimalism, she thrives on multicolour.
Willow's request to the universe for her perfect man seems to have missed the mark with Henry. But when a new man arrives in the village, fate might finally get it right. Has Willow found "The One," or does she need to look closer to home?
Our spirited protagonist, Willow, is an artist with a penchant for vibrant colours and a deep connection to nature. She's moved back to her childhood village seeking a fresh start, and her dream cottage becomes her sanctuary. Her heart is open, and she's ready for love, even if her request to the universe for "The One" seems to have gone awry when she meets her brooding neighbour. Her love for her dog, Spud, adds warmth and companionship to her life.
The enigmatic scientist next door, Henry, is the epitome of minimalism. His orderly life contrasts sharply with Willow's colourful chaos. Beneath his serious exterior, there's a vulnerability that draws Willow's attention. Henry's journey involves more than just scientific equations; it's about opening his heart to the unexpected.
Willow's best friend, Abby, provides comic relief and unwavering support. She's the one who playfully dubs Henry as "Doctor Dishy." Her friendship with Willow is heartwarming, while her quirky personality and love for matchmaking add depth to the story.
The charming village setting introduces a host of secondary characters, from the nosy baker, to the wise old gardener, and the local book club members. Each character contributes to the sense of community and adds layers to the narrative.
Morrey skillfully brings these characters to life, making them relatable and endearing. Their interactions create a delightful tapestry of love, laughter, and self-discovery.
Morrey weaves an uplifting love story that warms the heart. Her delightful characters and witty dialogue make this romcom a joy to read. "Be Your Best Self" is a super sweet read that guarantees to warm any chilly evening.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a temporary e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Boldwood Books and Net Galley for the ARC of Be Your Best Self by Maxine Morrey. The story follows Willow, a woman who is content with her quiet life in a rural England town with her dog Spud, her plants, and her teddy bear patients. Life gets exponentially louder and more frustrating when she gets a new neighbor, Dr. Henry Darcy, whom she butts heads with immediately. As the two get to know each other, however, it’s clear that the first impressions they had of one another may have to be re-evaluated.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite novels, so I love to read books that are even loosely based on the premise. This one, unfortunately, fell a little flat to me. I did appreciate Willow’s ability to speak her mind to Henry, but her character’s maturity level felt inconsistent at times. Also, when she and Henry finally get together, the novel has them kiss and then jump weeks ahead in time, so we miss the sweet interactions that come with a new relationship. I understand that the plot needed to advance, but I was not a fan of the progression. I also thought that the end with Wise (think a Wickham character) was unbelievable. There were parts of the book I enjoyed, but overall, it was not my cup of tea.

I enjoyed following Willow’s story in Be Your Best Self. I thought that this was a cute romantic comedy. Willow is newly divorced, and she makes this transition to move back into her village. She’s with her dog, Spud, living in this cottage she loves. She has this idea and hope of manifesting her perfect man, but instead she’s stuck living next to Dr. Henry Darcy. Everything is going well for her so far, up until she has to deal with her neighbor. They are the complete polar opposites of each other. The author’s narration was simple, cute, and gave me Hallmark, romcom vibes. It was a fluffy romance novel, and I am not mad at it. I feel like some can relate to Willow, in a sense of wanting to start over. I feel like there are many of us who go through tough times, but we just look at it in a positive direction. We move forward, and go towards an alternative direction. We look ahead, rather than backwards. We strive towards what we truly want in life, and we work towards those goals. The outcome of those goals may not be exactly what we 100% hoped for, but they are probably where we are meant to end up or be. It really is a heartwarming story, and it gets a thumbs up for me!
Willow is living her peaceful life in the countryside until her new neighbour, Henry, arrives. The pair disagree instantly and learn that they have nothing in common. Willow had tried to manifest The One and clearly it would seem that the dishy doctor next door wasn’t it. She tries again and a new man arrives in the village, could it finally have worked, or could she have been wrong this time.
I really enjoyed this book, I had a smile on my face throughout. Willow and Henry are two very different characters and personalities that it was no wonder they clashed when they first met. It was then interesting to watch them navigate overcoming this and trying to build a friendship. Despite their different personalities I loved them both equally and hoped that fate had led them to each other.
I loved the sound of Willow’s house and garden, I want to live there! I found reading about them relaxing and I could imagine sitting out looking across to the fields and enjoying the views.
The writing in Maxine’s books make them so easy to read and get lost in, that I always feel transported into the characters world, which is exactly what happened again here.
This book was heart-warming, uplifting, feel-good and full of romance.
In this fun modern romance novel, readers join Willow in her home village where she lives a quiet life with her dog Spud. Actually, it’s only quiet until her new neighbor, Dr. Henry Darcy, moves in and begins serious renovations on his house that wake her at all hours of the morning. Quickly getting off on the wrong foot, Willow and Henry argue over everything and agree on nothing. Willow, however, still wants to find the One, and it has to be the other new man in the village, not Henry -- right? As the novel unfolds and Willow and Henry continue to interact with each other in their neighborhood, the village, and elsewhere, maybe opposites really do attract even if they get off on the wrong foot. With charmingly whimsical characters and a beautiful English countryside setting, Morrey’s novel is a lighthearted and charming romance novel. Willow is a unique heroine whose idiosyncrasies and quirks make her all the more relatable, while the premise of the book -- personal bests, growth, and open mindedness --will strike true with all readers. A fun summer novel with a great romance and friendship between major and minor characters, readers will definitely enjoy Morrey’s latest novel.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.
I adore Maxine Morrey's books because they always make me feel better than when I went into them , this also drew me in because of the title too, as someone who suffers from anxiety and depression I have to say I’m always drawn by something sounding like it is positive or will improve my wellbeing, so an uplifting romcom, I’m 100% in , especially as been struggling a bit lately.
Anyhoo, this book is definitely what my brain ordered, it’s completely uplifting and a completely soul affirming read. The characters are gorgeous, so relatable, I love Willow I want her as my friend. I don’t blame her for envying her bestie’s relationship at all, I did as I read it. Then we have Henry, Dr Dishy, I loved their angst, the chemistry between them and who could forget Spud, the star of the show (after our main characters of course ☺️)
Be Your Best Self is full of fun, humour , I laughed out loud quite a lot with this (receiving odd looks on the bus) it will help you escape reality for a little while, but return you feeling far better.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A cute small town, when opposites attract romance.
Willows life is going well the only downfall is her love life is not, So she she decides to manifest into the universe the perfect man instead she receives a new neighbour broody doctor Henry Darcy and he is NOT the man she was hoping for, This book includes - small town - opposites attract - enemies to lovers - Grumpy x sunshine
This story was beautifully told, it had likeable characters with wonderful character development. The MMC was a secret softy and every interaction the main characters had was filled with chemistry, the story had me invested and rooting for them to be together the whole time. The book wonderfully portrayed how you can be in a relationship with someone that is your polar opposite and even with complete difference of opinion still respect and be open to that person. Plus spud was the best doggo
I love Maxine Morrey's books and look forward to seeing what else she will bring to us in the future.
Maxine Morrey books never fail to be a lovely read and this one is no different. Her descriptions of the world around us are always detailed and enjoyable, and brings me right to the English countryside along with her characters.
Willow and Henry are two completely different people and get off to a really bad start especially when Henty tells her that he's not a dog person! When Willow thinks she can manifest her perfect man after finally getting on with her divorce, she thinks that Henry is the opposite of what she wants. But as they start to get to know each other, things start to change. But cue misunderstandings, hurt feelings, bad communication and the appearance of Mr. Perfect, and their relationship derails. Both have been changed by the other but they have to get out of their own way.
This book is in a similar vein to her others, so if you like her work, you'll enjoy escaping to village life with donkeys, a horse, a cute dog called Spud, a lovely best friend and two opposites attract characters falling in love.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books the ARC. All opinions are my own.
This story of ‘will opposites attract?’ Is an enjoyable read. Willow is tuned in to the natural world. Henry Darcy is a firm believer in Science. Their cottages reflect their different personalities as do their gardens. Willow loves to mix an abundance of everything. Henry has gone for the minimal look. At first, whenever they meet, they seem to clash. This feels like a warm, uplifting read as their friendship develops.
You form a great picture of life in a close, caring community. Willow’s friends look out for her and you sense that Henry has a supportive family and that he cannot be as unapproachable as he first seems. Reports of his work as a doctor contradict any aloofness. As Willow attempts to manifest her ideal man, you cannot help but hope that she will recognise him when she sees him. What is there not to like in this gentle uplifting romance?
A funny heartwarming rom com that melted all my stress away. What more could I ask for with these picturesque settings and loveable characters. Willow and her dog companion Spud get a new neighbour and he is also the new town doctor aka Dr Dishy. Dr Henry and Willow butt heads and that is saying the least. When Willow has a new love interest things come to a head. Will Willow,Dr Henry and Spud live happily ever after? I for one was cheering for it to happen. I enjoyed the relationship between Spud and Willow as it reminded me of my own relationship with my dog. Willow would do anything for her one true love Spud. While in the beginning I didn't understand why Henry was so standoffish, I eventually warmed to him and he became my favourite character. This book felt like having a chinwag with a old friend and it was delightful!
I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.
On first impressions, I felt a connection with the protagonist, Willow, and I loved the lighthearted tone of the writing. I found some of the characters likeable, and the ones that could be deemed unlikeable seemed to be portrayed in a humorous sort of way. There was something about the storytelling in general that made me chuckle as well.
As I carried on reading, I found that this book made me smile more and more. There were some elements of Willow's personality that I identified with, particularly her attitude towards romantic relationships.
I found this light and easy to read. It was humorous, quirky and a lot of fun.
Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.
This was an absolutely adorable story of two neighbours who, after one moves in and starts to rip all the plant life out, fall out, but have to learn to be friends who live side by side, even though they are complete opposites. You’re in for a laugh a minute as these two have to go from not speaking at all to making conversation!!! Hilarious!! The dashing Dr Darcy is a bit of a cold fish and very restrained, not seeming to allow any emotions through . He has moved from the city to this quiet country town. He then proceeds to rip out all the plants and trees in the garden, which is what next door neighbour Willow is met with after arriving home from a dog walk. Her memories are being ripped out by a digger! She’s horrified!! Many thanks to Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this arc copy via Netgalley. My opinion is my own. #Netgalley, #TheBoldBookClub, #Scribbler_Maxi.
This is a fun read filled with the right amount of tension, angst, love and friendship. It gives off Pride and Prejudice vibes.
It follows the story of neighbours Willow and Henry, who had a very tense first encounter, and their attempts at friendship. They are as opposite as they come and their subsequent encounters makes for delightful and entertaining read.
I love Willow’s interactions with Spud and the other animals. I love her job as well ( reminds me of The Repair Shop).
I enjoyed the spar between both characters and their encounters were very funny. The author has a way with words and the way she crafted this plot will make readers continue to flip the pages.
Lovers of Mr Darcy, nature, enemies to lovers, small town romance will enjoy this.
I received an advanced copy and the review is mine and voluntary.
Willow, seeking a fresh start, moves back to her childhood village and settles into her dream cottage with her dog, Spud. She enjoys the tranquillity and community of country life until the arrival of her new neighbour, Henry Darcy. Despite his good looks, Willow and Henry clash on almost everything: science vs. nature, minimalism vs. vibrant colours. Willow begins to doubt her request to the universe for her perfect man, thinking it either hasn’t been delivered yet or Henry just isn’t the one. However, when a new man arrives in the village, Willow wonders if fate has finally delivered her true match or if her perfect partner has been right next door all along.
This book offers pure fluffy romantic escapism, perfect for a cold winter’s day. And while it was an enjoyable read, I didn’t find it particularly memorable or standout. I found Willow’s relationship with her dog, Spud, really sweet and fun to read. The chemistry between Willow and Henry is palpable, adding an engaging layer to their frequent clashes. Additionally, the small English village setting is charmingly depicted, complete with the sense of community, gossip, and camaraderie that comes with that kind of life.
Overall, there’s nothing wrong with this book and fans of Maxine Morrey's other works will likely enjoy this one, as it carries her signature blend of warmth and romance. For me it was a nice enough read but just didn’t quite grab me or leave a lasting impression.
Thank you NetGalley and @ Books for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Willow and her dog, Spud, have made themselves a home in her childhood town. Everyone knows and loves them, and there's no need for a phone due to the rate at which gossip spreads! Willow has been dragging her feet to finalize her divorce and comes to realize maybe this is why she hasn't found Mr. Right yet.
So when a new resident moves in, everyone quickly pegs him as an eligible bachelor - Henry Darcy is handsome AND a doctor! But he and Willow definitely do not get off to a great start. They're polar opposites, and following their mishaps is quite entertaining. This would have been five stars had the ending not felt so abrupt.
Thanks to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Maxine Morrey for the eARC.
Be Your Best Self is a fun and entertaining read with well developed characters and the cutest dog called Spud who was the real heartthrob for me! I loved Willow's whimsical and earthy nature, her love of her garden & home was a real attention grabber for me. I'm not sure enough of her Green Witch practices were shown but for me I love alternative main characters. Henry was written as I'd expected for a Darcy-esque character and so frustrating and withdrawn at times, but inevitably that crack in the armour (& not being a dog person!) thankfully softened him and I appreciated getting to see that development. I am hoping there's a chance of getting to see these characters again in further books as I really liked some of the side characters like Ed & Abby.
It started off interesting, however the last part at around the 85% mark was hopelessly stupid. The heroine freaks out of something really dumb and is very hard on her love interest to the point where I have no idea why the guy liked her.
The character is weird, which I usually like, but her whole personality is that she’s weird. She’s very judgmental and immature and we’re supposed to think that being alternative and woo woo is the right way to be and being shy or serious and believing in science is less than. The main character could have acted more grown up or grown but I had to stop reading so unless she showed major growth in the last few pages I don’t think it happened.
One of the worst take offs of Pride and Prejudice I’ve read
Seeking a fresh start in her childhood village, Willow finds her peaceful life disrupted by her new neighbor, the brooding and handsome Henry. Despite their clashing personalities, Willow can’t deny her attraction to him. When a new man arrives in town, Willow must decide if fate has finally delivered her “The One” or if true love is closer than she thinks.
This is a well-paced, compelling romance with strong characters. Willow and Henry may be opposites, but they fit perfectly together. I like how he didn’t dismiss her free-spirited view of the world.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This sweet romance follows Willow and her dog Spud, as she has settled into life back in the countryside.
Suddenly, Henry Darcy, a doctor, moves in next door and her first impressions are not great. Not only with the noise the renovations cause, but a few comments from Henry which Willow doesn’t take kindly too.
After their initial confrontations die down, Henry tries to make amends and asks Willow to show him around the village. Their friendship grows, but with Willow looking for the ‘One’ when another new doctor shows up in the village, she must work out who could be the man for her.
Will Willow find her ‘One’? Will Henry make amends with Willow?
This romance is a lovely and sweet read, with plenty of moments where you can laugh along with the characters too.
It is a love/hate romance and I’m not sure if it is just due to the character’s name ‘Darcy’ but it brings me back to books I use to read of this kind by Jane Austen, with a more modern take.
I liked Willow’s outlook on life, and like her believe in fate, she is a lovely character to read about and deserves to be happy.
Overall, a sweet romance where Willow tries to find the ‘One’.
This had a pride and prejudice vibe with Henry and Willow clashing horns when he moved in next door to her and made assumptions about her lifestyle.
I loved the progression from enemies to lovers but I didn't like that immediately they got together, the book jumped weeks later to their conflict. Would've wanted to see more of their new relationship. The ending was also wrapped up a bit quickly.
This was a lighthearted read though. I enjoyed it for the most part. Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
