"Illustrations featuring mix of styles in both clothing and architecture set the story in an imaginary yet vaguely familiar landscape, lit by a dreamlike haze. The smoothly told story contains the familiar details and a happy ending in which Cinderella forgives her stepfamily." - The Horn Book Club -
"This satisfying tale never grows old. Koopman's illustrations are jewel-toned and Cinderella herself is attractive as a person and figure." - Yellow Brick Road -
Anthea Bell OBE (born 1936) was an English translator who has translated numerous literary works, especially children's literature, from French, German and Danish to English. She was known for her numerous translations, including Austerlitz, one of the most significant German language works of fiction for the period since World War II, and of the French Asterix comics along with co-translator Derek Hockridge
Despite my love for this story, but by the Secretariat to mention it's really bad story .. Make the child wait for a magic solutions and superstition, and waiting for its to change their life one day! alot of this stories Will make a generation of fools and zombies :)
Thought I'd better read the Perrault version of Cinderella for my Fairy-Tale-Binge-Period... as far as is possible, as I'd struggle with the french. This translation by Anthea Bell (who is famous for translating Asterix and the Nicholas books into english) was pretty good.
I thought her (or Perrault's, I'm not sure) justification for Cinderella not asking her father for help when the evil step gang are making her life a misery was a mistake. He 'would not have believed her, for he was totally under his wife's control.' Huh? His daughter was habitually wearing rags, was cooking or scrubbing floors underfoot all day and slept on the floor in the ashes by the fire. The evidence of his own eyes would have made her story credible.
No, better left out altogether. After binging on dozens of fairy tales over the last month, I can testify to the strange behaviour of fathers in fairy tales, especially those that marry new wives. They either completely disappear out of the story (like this one) or their behaviour becomes so extraordinary as to defy all reasonable excuse. Cinders was lucky he didn't take her out into the forest and kill her, or eat her as a stew served up by her step mother. Sheesh! Glad I wasn't born in a fairy tale!
“Heavens above, how lovely she is!” Cinderella, by Charles Perrault, is a picture book intended for readers in preschool through grade 3. I gave it five stars. Cinderella, named this because she slept in the ashes of the kitchen fire for warmth, is a unknown peasant girl who cooks, cleans, and obeys the orders of her stepmother and two stepsisters. Her magical fairy godmother sends her to the ball of the prince, dressed in magnificent gowns. The prince immediately falls in love with Cinderella and, upon finding her to fit the glass slipper, marries Cinderella at once, making her known and recognized in this magical kingdom setting. The illustrations, subtle and restrained in Cinderella’s home during chores but glowing and radiant at the magnificent ball, capture the true essence of Cinderella’s beauty, both inside and out, no matter what her surroundings. The format of the goodhearted being rewarded yet forgiving of evil doers is well captured in this text, as Cinderella lives happily with her prince but forgives her stepfamily for their intolerance and cruelty. The theme of true love knowing no boundaries and the kindhearted rising up and finding true happiness will appeal to all readers, with its positive and uplifting foundation. This text will appeal to any young child, as the magic of the fairy godmother and the idea that we all can achieve happiness is well-rooted in childhood innocence and dreams.
This is the French version of the classic story of the young girl who is maltreated by her mean stepmother and stepsisters, but the French version. Cinderella received this name from her stepsister since she always liked to sit next to the chimney in the ashes. It was Cinderella that “scoured the pots and scrubbed the stairs.” Cinderella was a beautiful child, but she was unfortunate. One night the prince was having a ball. Cinderella did all she could to help her sisters prepare for the ball. All while getting teased by her stepsisters “Cinderella, now wouldn’t you just like to go to the ball?” “Cinderseat at a ball! How people would laugh!” Then off they went, leaving poor Cinderella behind. But, Cinderella would in deed prove them wrong. She is visited by her godmother and presented with a beautiful chariot and all the works. In this version, she helps her godmother gather the pumpkin that will be her coach, the mice to become the horses, the rat that becomes the horseman, and the lizards that become the footmen.
She can go to the ball as long as she agrees to leave the ball by midnight. She goes to the ball and the prince instantly falls for her and invites her to sit with him. Her stepsisters were none the wisest even though she was talking with them and offering them food. She leaves the ball hastily and the prince is captivated by her beauty still.
The next night there was another ball. Once again the stepsisters were there and Cinderella once again shows up and enchants everyone in the ball. This time, she was not aware of the time. The clock struck twelve and off she ran from the ball and out the gate to her house. A few days later, the prince sends his herald out to search for the mysterious lady. Eventually, the get to the house of Cinderella and the rest is the same ending-they live happily ever after. But, in this version, Cinderella marries her sisters off to two lords of the court.
The language is simple and the storyline is fun, this book can be for younger to older readers. Readers can explore the ideas of being kind to others.
Name of book: Cinderella Author: Charles Perrault Star Rating: **** Plot Summary: A classic fairy tale about a young girl named Cinderella who lives with her father and two step sisters. She is treated very unfairly by her two step sisters, they make her do all the house work and are very unkind towards her. When Cinderella is not allowed go to the Ball her fairy Godmother says she shall go but must leave by midnight as the spell will break. Cinderella goes off happily to the ball and meets a young, handsome prince. However she loses track of time and has to leave suddenly. On the way out of the palace she loses one of her glass slippers so the prince insists he will marry whoever fits the slipper. As it is Cinderella’s he eventually finds her and they end up happily ever after together. I like this story as it is a classic fairy tale that will never be too old. It is a fond memory of my childhood, a story that I can well remember. The element of magic in it is also exciting for children, it is a short and an enjoyable read as it has a happy ending.
This would be suitable for early years most likely three to seven as it’s very basic and quite ambiguous. It’s a believable story for that age group as an older age group might tend to question it. Another reason it is suitable as it is quite short and will capture their attention.
This could be read to a class at story time as it is short and will hold their attention. It could also be used for guided reading, as they could take turns reading different sections as it is an easy read and would be good for that age group 6 or 7 to be able to read it. Role play could also be used and some children could be given different parts and they could take turns acting it out. It would be useful for knowledge retrieval skills too, why did Cinderella run off, what did she leave behind etc . It could also be left on the class book shelf for independent reading too.
This story is mainly about a girl called the Immortal Peduncle, who had lost her mother. A year her later Cinderella’s dad married a new wife, who had her daughters. The two-step sisters were very mean to Cinderella, pushing her to do the dirty works and clean the house. They also took away all her pretty clothes. From this time on the immortal peduncle (Cinderella) started to suffer hardships. One day, the king issued an order to hold a dance party so as to elect a wife. The immortal peduncle begged her stepmother to let her go, but did not get a permission from her stepmother. So, she cried sadly. Suddenly, a fairy lady appeared in front of her and helped the poor girl change an extremely attractive skirt and a pair of glasses shoes. Cinderella happily went to the dance party. Finally, she won king’s heart and lead a happy life with the king in a castle. Good stories always have happy endings. As for children’s literature, happy endings are welcome because children want to become heroes to protect poor or weak people in the stories. Also, the pictures in the story are also very important. A good story always needs good pictures because these pictures help students go into a vivid environment of the story and imagine what happed in that situation. This story book has shown us these two shining points. What is more, the language is also simple and easy for young kids to understand.
This version of Cinderella by Charles Perrault would be a fantastic book to read as a read aloud in a 5th grade classroom. While the language may be construed as a bit complex, this offers teachers an opportunity to help students expand their vocabulary. For instance, the word "garret" is used to describe where cinderella slept. A garret is basically a small attic. The book provides very beautiful and detailed illustrations to go along with the story so that children can have a visual representation of what a garret might be. This book could also be used to show how to draw illustrations that connect to what is going on in the story. For practice, the students could write a page of their own story and draw their own illustration, paying close attention to detail like Charles Perrault did in this story. The story also has a great moral, which is that outward appearance is nice, but it is what is on the inside that matters the most. Cinderella is emotionally abused by her step mother and step sisters because of how she looks, but she ends up being the one to find true happiness in the end.
In this book it talks about a young girl who's mother passes away and once her father remarries he soon passes away as well, leaving Cinderella under the care of her step-mother who turns out to be quiet evil. She treats Cinderella as if she were a slave continually giving her chores and things like that while her own two daughters can lounge around all day. When the royal family throws a ball, the family is invited to go, however Cinderella tells herself that a ball is no place for a girl like her and her step-sisters agree. This book is slightly different then the story everyone nowadays hears about but it still has the same great story. Through the life-like pictures, the story is able to seem more believable, therefore capturing the readers attention even more.
A couple of days ago I finished reading, Cinderella in English as my 24th book. I have read the book with Japanese translation when I was a little girl, but I'd never read it in English.
Before reading the book, I thought it is written for little children. so it must be ready for reading. However, when I started reading it, I figured out it was not easy.
I am not good at reading classics novels in English. It was good for me to start reading classic in English. I want to read more classics from now on.
This Cinderella story is from England but has the same story line as the Walt Disney Classic. The illustrations are beautiful and the word choice is phenomal. I would recommend this book to all readers. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.
The story book Cinderella by Charles Perrault is about a young girl who is the daughter of a prince and her mother passes away. After this the prince or her father remarries a self-centered women who becomes Cinderella's step mother. She is then forced by her mean step mother and two step sisters to be their servant and work for them all. During this rough time, she slaves away for them by cleaning up their messes, serving them food, and doing all of their chores. Cinderella doesn't dare tell her father since the mean stepmother controls him completely. One day the ladies of the house receive an invitation to a ball, where the prince will choose a wife. The mean step sisters become excited and teases Cinderella that maids aren't invited. Once the sisters leave for the ball, Cinderella cries to herself. Then, her fairy Godmother appears to her and begins to transformer her into the beautiful young lady she was born to be. The fairy godmother then begins making her a carriage, a beautiful gown with glass heels, and the mouse into her footmen. At the ball everyone is enchanted by Cinderella, including the prince, but the fairy godmother gave her a curfew of 12 o'clock, when the magic runs out. Having such a good time, Cinderella completely forgets and leaves at the last stroke of 12, and being in such a rush she leaves one of her glass slippers behind. The prince collected this shoe, and went to every girl in the kingdom to try on the slipper to see if she was the Cinderella. When he arrives to Cinderella's house, the stepsisters try to fit their big feet into the small glass slipper. But then Cinderella tries it on, and naturally it fits, as well she has the other slipper too. The sisters beg for her forgiveness and forgives them. The Prince and Cinderella then have a beautiful wedding and get married.
This story is an enjoyable classic for everyone. It's a story that has been around for a long time for generations to enjoy. I think this story is very enjoyable to young children, especially younger girls. The plot of the story can also teach children about how to always be thoughtful and kind to others, even the ones who mistreat you. The illustrations in this book are also very artistic and enhance the storyline greatly. I highly recommend for parents or even teachers to read this story to their children and even show them the movie. Overall, this is a great book and an enjoyable classic that I even read and loved as a child.
I Encourage young girls to live on their dreams and keeping up the spirit of truth in heart, like the book, Cinderella has been my favorite from the world of fairy tales. And when Disney gave birth to it for the first time in a full length animated movie, it became more and more famous.Cinderella’s role is a bit different from all the other princesses or girls, she plays her role amazingly although she is just a character from an old dusty book or an anime from an animated movie, she rather puts it nicely.
An orphan girl, living with a wicked step mother and two ugly step sisters always obeys them but this politeness and gentle heart led her to the point of weakness. Stopping young Cinderella to go to the royal ball was such rude of her mother and sisters but then seemed the wish was coming true. A fairy- god-mother appears and transforms Cinderella’s rag into a beautiful gown, a fat pumpkin into an amazing carriage and four silly mice into horse men. What more can wipe off Cinderella’s tears and bring smile to her lips. Cinderella was ready to go to the ball but the fairy-god-mother had a condition that she should come back before twelve at night. As soon as, Cinderella reached the ball, the prince felt in love with her at a first sight. They together had a wonderful time but then Cinderella had to go back to her home before twelve. In a hurry, Cinderella leaves one of her glass slipper but the prince was determined to find his love back so the royal men from the palace visited each house letting the young girls and ladies try on the slipper but all of them failed including Cinderella’s step sisters. But then the twist began, in a flash of light, it fitted correctly on Cinderella’s foot. Everyone was surprised at this.
The prince was happy to find his love back and at last all the wishes of Cinderella came true.I believe that’s how every girls want to become like Cinderella and the fairy tale is for girls who dream of living happily ever after

The genre and format of this book is a picture book. the reading level for this book is middle level elementary students. this book can be used in a unit about being treated fairly of treating others how you want to be treated. it is more of a fun book not a lesson for a classroom. the theme of this book is a fairy tale. i think girls will enjoy this book more but any race and socioeconomic status would enjoy it.

Cinderella is a story about a young girl who is a servant to her evil step mother and step sisters. When she and her sisters are invited to the royal ball to perhaps become the next princess her step mother does everything she can to not let her go. When she finds a way to go she comes across a fairy god mother that helps her with her success.
Every one has read this story as a child. so I feel like everybody can relate. When I first read this story I just thought that it was just a story about a girl that was trying to find a husband. But now when I read it I realize so many more hidden messages. For example the jealousy between her and her sisters I never thought to even recognize. But now that I have read it when I'm older I see what is actually going on. Also the value of others is well displayed. It shows true character that the prince sees past her duty as a servant.
I LOVE this story. It has to be one of my favorite childhood books. It's a classic! This story is about a man whose wife passes away and he remarries a horrible, mean woman. Her step sisters were not so kind to Cinderella. Cinderella is forced to do all of the chores and the dirty work. Eventually, there is a grand ball and it turns out that the glass slipper actually fits her. She ends up marrying the prince and, in this book, she forgives her step sisters and finds them men to marry as well. The genre of this book is a fairy tale. I rated this book a five because I love how Cinderella overcomes the hard times and eventually finds the man of her dreams. She has worked so hard and is now greatly rewarded. There are some themes in this story that include, faith, triumph, and perseverance. I believe this book would be good for grades K-2.
Cinderella by Loek Koopmans was a spin on the classic and widely popular folklore tale of the one and only Cinderella. I have to admit this book wasn’t much of a spin on the tale and the book itself I did not feel was anything special. The plot was predictable, the characters were flat, and there was a lot of sexism being portrayed throughout the whole story. This is a book that I would not go out of my way to include in my classroom because it tells girls that they need a man to save them and give them a better life which is not what I want any of my students to be thinking. Cinderella is one of the most classic folklore stories and I also feel as if most of my students will have already been exposed to this tale so I don’t feel it would be one that I need to even included in my library for them to discover. Moreover, what I did love about this book was the beautiful and moving illustrations that painted the pages and brought the story to life in a way the words could not. Lastly, this book would be a good one to maybe include in older classes to discuss the genre of folklore and its characteristics.
Award the book has received: Caldecott Medal Grade Levels: Prek-K, 1-2, 3-5
Summary: Cinderella’s father remarried and gave her an evil stepmother and stepsisters who took over her life and made it miserable. There was a ball at the prince’s castle and they were all invited but Cinderella so she wished upon a godmother who helped her attend the ball. Cinderella left her glass slipper in a hurry so that the prince may find her again.
Review: Children of all ages love fairytales because it gives them a sense of belonging and the hope that someday they will have their happy ending too. It also teaches a great lesson about patience and how good things will happen to good people, but it will take time. Cinderella is also a story about a dream coming true and can teach students to never give up on their dreams.
Possible Lesson Plans: Students can draw or write about their dreams and create their own fairytales where their happy endings come true too. Students can be challenged to change the plot of the story and reverse the character’s roles or even extend the lot line to see what happens after the story ends.
Another interpretation of the original fairy tale about Cinderella, a young peasant girl that is being mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters. She has to cook and clean and do the dishes. When word of the prince holding a ball, Cinderella wants to go, but her stepmother and stepsisters wont have it. It will be one of the stepsisters he shall choose. With the help of a fairy godmother, Cinderella makes it to the ball, and wins the love of the prince in the end.
Although I think this is a fun story, I don't think I would use it for a read aloud in class. Some students may be bored by the fairytale and princess stories, and this story is already so popular many students probably already know some adaptation of this story. I would recommend this book to students looking for princess books, since this story is one of the most popular princess stories.
