According to Rachel Marconi chocolate heals all wounds. That and throwing darts at pictures of her ex-boyfriend. Burned by yet another bad relationship, Rachel decides to reprioritize her life, putting her dream to compete on a Food Network Challenge on the top of her list and dating at the bottom crossed out in red sharpie.
But what's a girl to do when a certain sexy guy keeps asking her out?
Cue in Graydon Green, a former pro hockey player turned restaurant owner. After a lot of persistent and humorous teasing, he finally convinces Rachel to commit to a date. Just when things begin to warm up, threatening notes directed at Rachel arrive. When her bakery is vandalized, Graydon's protective streak goes on red alert. Is it her obsessive ex-boyfriend stalking her? Or maybe a challenger trying to sabotage the competition?
Either way, Rachel is definitely going to need more chocolate - perhaps drizzled over ice cream and devil's food cake.

March 2017 - 2nd time reading this book and I loved it just as much! It's definitely one that I will be rereading over and over again! :)
June 2014 - Rachel can see it now. A sparkly ring on her left ring finger. She is this close to getting her happily ever after. This. Close. That is until her boyfriend Nico tells her that he's married. Married with kids. How did she not see this?! Without even thinking she punches him in the face and runs away. But Nico just won't let her leave the restaurant. She has to let him explain everything. The more she tries to leave, the more aggressive he gets.
Enter in the very handsome Graydon Green who comes to her rescue and offers her a safe place to hide out until Nico is gone and her cab arrives. While she's sitting in the office talking to the handsome stranger she decides that enough is enough. It's time to get her life back on track. She needs to focus on her bakery and competing on a Food Network Challenge and winning. Men are completely off the table.
But Graydon has a different plan in mind. He has never met anyone like Rachel before and he is determined to get to know her better. He soon realizes that he'll need to take things slow if he ever wants a chance with her. But he has all the time in the world to make her his. She just doesn't know it yet.. ;)
And just when things start to heat up between Rachel and Graydon, unseen forces arise and throw a wrench in their happily ever after. Between her stalker, threatening notes, vandalism, and sabotage at the competition, Rachel and Graydon will have to hold on tight and hope they discover who's behind it all before it's too late.
Loved... Loved... LOVED Sweet Confections! I could not put it down! Rachel and Graydon had an awesome relationship! Rachel is a little firecracker! I loved how she just said whatever popped into her mind and didn't seem to have a filter. Graydon was just amazing! He was patient, he was encouraging, he had faith in her and always knew exactly what to do when she needed him most.
I think one of my favorite scenes was when he met her family for Sunday dinner! Hilarious! And I loved little Stockton! Such a sweet precious child! I got all teary eyed when he talked to Graydon... you just have to read the book to know what I'm talking about... ;) *sigh*
I loved the mystery added into the mix. I had my suspicions pretty early on and even though I am not a patient person when it comes to mysteries, I let the story unfold naturally and really enjoyed that element of the book.
I loved all the characters and the relationships they had with each other. The book was just amazing! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Danyelle Ferguson is definitely a new favorite of mine! Can't wait to try some of the recipes at the end of the book! A huge plus if you ask me! ;)
And of course no review of mine would be complete without the casting. What do you think?! *dreamy sigh*
I liked this one. I enjoy books that are based around bakeries, restaurants or things like that. Makes for a fun setting. I thought the book started out strong, I was sucked in right away. I liked how Graydon and Rachel meet for the first time, gotta love the hero. I liked Rachel, she seemed like a genuine character and one you could easily like and relate to. I liked her relationship with her BFF, her family and Graydon. I liked Graydon, he is somewhat of a celebrity, being a retired pro hockey player. That aspect of his life didn’t play a big role though; he just seemed like a normal guy. I did love the reaction from Rachel’s family when they meet him for the first time though, that made me smile. I thought they had a nice relationship; it was nice that they built on a friendship. Which is a nice change from the insta-love in most romances. I thought they had good chemistry and just a sweet relationship.
The mystery was pretty good. I had my suspicions from the beginning, but it was fun to see how everything played out. It added a nice element to the story, so it wasn’t a total romance, but had a little more depth to the story. It’s nice that the story takes place over a longer time period, which helped establish their relationship and build the suspense.
Overall, a fun read and one I would recommend. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for what Ms. Ferguson comes up with next. Oh, I liked that there are recipes in the back, I just wish we could see some pictures too. I'd love to see the cake they did for the baking challenge. :)
Content Romance: Clean Language: Mild (I think it was mostly G a few times, can't remember any others) Violence: Mild
Sweet Confections lived up to it’s title as the story was sugary enough to give anyone a cavity. Rachel and Graydon were goody two shoes who had some cliché story book moments and unfortunately, came off as one dimensional for most of the story. The secondary characters were great companions and flushed out wonderfully to add more dimension to the story and I often found myself more interested in them. Sweet Confections will work for individuals looking for a squeaky clean romance with mild suspense and action.
A delectable contemporary romance, “Sweet Confections” is the first of a series that should all be on the to-read list, if Ms. Ferguson continues to write this way.
Rachel Marconi dumps her Italian (<---- this will become significant) boyfriend who just confessed that he has a wife and family back in the old country. He doesn't want to leave her and gets kind of stalkerish, but she says tough beans, get lost forever (you go, girl!).
Just as Rachel is swearing off men completely, she meets Graydon, a pretty much perfect guy, and an ex-hockey star, for you sports romance fans. And who looks like Vin Diesel, only taller and with hair.
Well. I have to say that the idea of Vin Diesel with hair proved a little difficult for me to imagine, but luckily Google is there to help me out. And since I am all about the background research, I went to work and found some old pictures of Vin Diesel with hair. It was a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.
You're welcome.
Anyway, since Rachel's Italian mother is dying to marry her off and her brothers are huge sports fans, she's reluctant to get involved or to introduce him to her family. But Graydon the Vin Diesel lookalike hockey player dude likes her and will not be put off by lame excuses.
It's a cute story for the most part (stalker showdown excepted), and pretty much clean. Like most contemporary romance novels, it's pretty superficial, a quick and easy read, but sometimes that's just the type of brain candy you're looking for. The writing is a tad amateurish in spots, and I caught a few typos and grammar errors, but not enough to really annoy me. It won't stick with me longer than a day or two but it was decent for a freebie romance, if a little long-winded at times.
The plot is thickened in this case by the stalker subplot, and by Rachel's dessert business, Sweet Confections, and her desire to compete in the Food Network's dessert-making challenge. Which makes my marshmallows-are-less-fluffy shelf and baby marshmallow gif particularly appropriate here, so yay!
Reading this book was a tasty treat! (I had to limit myself or I would have consumed it all at once!) Here are five of my favorite things about this book.
5. It's a clean romance with only a couple of minor swear words, yet it has the right amount of heart-melting, root-for-them moments.
4. Food Network references.
3. The chocolate lava tradition: a fun detail about the girls' tradition made even better with the husband's support. And Danyelle included the recipe--one I'm looking forward to trying out.
2. My favorite scene: Ice skating. (Probably all the more poignant because of my own history--see my bio and you'll understand.)
1. The redhead main character: spunky, feisty, funny, sweet, pretty, and real (including curves!). I hope to read more with this character and her hunk-able love interest.
Okay, so I'm a little partial to books about bakers, so Sweet Confections featuring a baker and former pro hockey player hit all the high notes for me. Great characters that made me laugh out loud and fall in love--as any good romance should. The suspense angle is a nice counterpoint to their Rachel and Graydon's growing relationship and I love how he just nudges himself into her life despite the fact that she's determine not to get involved in a romance again anytime soon without coming across as pushy or stalkerish. And he handles her, um, fascinating family with aplomb.
This was a fun, clean romance with a little mystery mixed in. Rachels spunky wit had me smiling from the very beginning, her insecurities and tendency to speak before she thought made her even more likable. Graydons love was solid from the beginning, I liked that their relationship wasn't rushed or crazy passionate from the get go and there weren't any of those sudden untrusting moments that seem to appear in so many stories. The mystery was a fun addition, as well as the yummy recipes in the end.
This story sucked me in on so many fronts. First, the bakery, and then the mouthwateringly delicious goodies described throughout the book. And no, I'm not talking about the cupcakes or the eclairs. I'm talking Grayson Green, the famous ex-hockey player. Wowza! Just kidding. The yummy desserts really were giving me some sugar cravings the entire time.
I was immediately wrapped up in this story when it started out so explosively: Rachel Marconi discovers the shocking news that the man with whom she's been getting fairly serious has a wife and kids back in Italy. Then she's immediately rescued by the big, strong Grayson Green. Like a series of fireworks this story just keeps going on until the middle where it slows for a while. I'm not sure what exactly I expected, but it felt like the characters were restraining a bit too much. I think it's fine to keep it clean, I'm all about that, but I think I would have liked to maybe see a bit more emotional connection and hearts longing for companionship. Anyway that part didn't last very long and before I knew it the story was exploding away again with one event more intriguing and exciting than the next. I really enjoyed the Food Network part of the story and the mystery that was woven into the plot. I would have liked to see a bit more of that earlier on in the story. It was a fun element that I don't always see in this genre.
Overall, I really enjoyed Sweet Confections. It was almost completely perfect, and I have recommended it to many of my friends since reading it.
Rachel Marconi designs cakes at the upscale bakery she co-owns with her best friend, Kristen. She thinks she has finally found love, too, until her boyfriend Nico breaks the news to her that he already has a wife and family in Italy. Thankfully he delivers the news at Brisket and Noodles, where she is saved by Graydon Green.
I really liked Graydon and Rachel... Graydon is a former pro hockey player and Rachel is nothing like any girl he has ever dated. She's a size 10 (so am I so I really liked that about her:) and isn't obsessed with his celebrity status. In fact, instead of throwing herself at him like so many women do, he has to chase her and convince her to give him a chance!
Add some vandalism, threatening notes, a stalker, and a Food Network challenge, and we have some mystery to go with this romance! Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.
This was a "just for me read", in between review books. I've been eyeing it on Amazon for awhile and snagged it one day when the price happened to drop! :) This is a clean romance with a couple instances of mild swearing and profanity. The story kept me interested and engaged and I enjoyed the extra bit of light suspense, especially as it progressed toward the end. Fun, sweet, diverting. I'll be back for more by this author.
3.8 stars - I really enjoyed this one. Story was great, romance was sweet and the dialogues were cute and funny. Didn’t really expect the suspense but it was well done and added to the overall story.
There's nothing like a great book to make a rainy, snowy Saturday perfect, and Danyelle Ferguson's "Sweet Confections" fit the bill wonderfully for me a few weeks ago, dishing up a sweet and clean romance with a mystery that fooled this super sleuth.
Here's the blurb from the back of the book:
According to Rachel Marconi chocolate heals all wounds. That and throwing darts at pictures of her ex-boyfriend. Burned by yet another bad relationship, Rachel decides to reprioritize her life, putting her dream to compete on a Food Network Challenge on the top of her list and dating at the bottom crossed out in red sharpie. Is it her obsessive ex-boyfriend stalking her? Or maybe a challenger trying to sabotage the competition?
Either way, Rachel is definitely going to need more chocolate - perhaps drizzled over ice cream and devil's food cake.
Ferguson's characters were thoughtful and real, making it easy for readers to invest fully in the challenges and hiccups in their budding relationship. I especially enjoyed the heroine. Rachel Marconi is not a Barbie doll. Nearing thirty, and a few pounds above svelte from all that delicious baking, she proves that real women eat, laugh, love, work, and drive men crazy--even perfect 10s like Graydon Green.
Ferguson's dialogue is snappy and sharp, and flows with a realism that allows readers to wrap themselves in the story. Ferguson tosses in an added bonus by including sevedral of the delicious recipes the Sweet Confections Bakery ladies whip up in the book, delectibles like Hot Lava Sundaes.
This is a splendid before bedtime read, and a great girlfriend book, one you'll want to get for a friend who needs a spa-day, or a diversion to tuck into her purse or kindle to enjoy while waiting for soccer practice to end. I gobbled it up and closed the cover wishing for more.
Yep. It's that good.
You can get your copy through Amazon, Kindle, and and through Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and iBookstore.
I love this kind of book! It's a cute romance mixed with one of my favorite things: baking and recipes! I also loved the mystery included!
Rachel is a great character. I love her spunk. When she realizes that the man she was dating had a family including a wife in another country she kicks him to the curb and won't listen to his lies about how she's the only one for him. But that all works out, because when she's on that very date she meets Graydon. I loved the way he took care of her when Nico went all crazy after she told him it was over.
I have to admit that I liked Graydon from the start! He's a gentleman, takes care of Rachel like she's a queen and he's great with kids. What more do you need? Well...actually you need chemistry and Rachel and Graydon have tons of that! I love that you see this story through his eyes as well.
Rachel's family is super fun too! I'm including her best friend and co-owner of Sweet Confections, Kristen, and her husband, Todd, in her family. I love the way that Todd takes care of both Kristen and Rachel when she needs someone. Rachel's family is a bit obsessed with her getting married which becomes really fun when Graydon ends up coming over for one of their big family dinners.
I loved the whole plot. It's cute, romantic, mysterious...and I didn't see the ending coming. Wow! I loved it too!
This book is great! I couldn't put it down from the very beginning!
Sweet Confections was full of sweet surprises! This is Danyelle Ferguson's first published novel. She has published other non-fiction writing, but I was blown away by this novel. It had a great combination of romance, humor and suspense; also we can't forget the yummy things that main character, Rachel and her friend in the Sweet Confections Bakery made every day. I was hungry the whole time I was reading the book. Also, an added bonus is that Danyelle has recipes for some of the things Rachel made.
There were so many things I loved in this story from the sassy Rachel, 28 and single who has just been burned in love, to the good looking and genuine leading man, Graydon who is a former pro-hockey player. I liked how long it took for these two to get together. It made the whole love story more realistic. I also loved the shocking twist at the end of the novel. The best part for me was the Food Competition at the Food Network. I love watching all shows on the Food Network so this was very exciting!
I'm so looking forward to more books in this series of Indulgence Row. I was happy to see that more books are in the works. If you enjoy a sweet romance with a taste of suspense and a fast paced storyline, Sweet Confections is the book for you!
Here's a romance to sweep you off your feet and right into Rachel's world and then Graydon's arms.
This is sassy classy writing at it's finest. The story grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. Rachel and Kristen are exactly the kind of women you want to be friends with and hope you are like. Fun, feisty, independent, creative, smart, beautiful, caring. You get the idea. Lots of funny mix-ups as Rachel and Graydon meet. But don't get too comfortable as there is a suspense element to this romance.
Ms. Ferguson's writing is solid, well crafted, and spunky. I look forward to reading more of her work. This is her debut fiction novel and I'm hoping to see more romance novels with her name under the title. She's been published in other genres already.
If you like clean romance where you can get lost in the characters' world, then pick up a copy of Sweet Confections pronto. Not to mention there's a lot of dessert going on. Time to get in the kitchen and get your baking on!
While this book was sweet and fun most of the time, the storyline seemed a bit disjointed. There was little fluidity to the overall plot, a the characters had a few issues of inconsistency. The overarching romance was immediate and without conflict, but was based in a web of drama. It did get exciting eventually, but I would have liked more drama in the actual relationship as well. The side characters were well developed and made a nice cocoon to fill in the story. Overall a good read, but didn't live up to its potential in my book.
This cute romance features a bakery and baker and an ex-professional hockey player. The two come together under strange circumstances. I loved all the goodie references (and the end has some recipes to try), and how the romance develops between the two. I also really liked the mystery in this book, as bad things keep happening to the bakery and you don’t know who’s causing the trouble (you think you do, but aren’t quite sure). There are lots of twists and turns and it was a fun book to read. I really liked this clean romance.
This was a delightful, clean, quick, fun romance. I loved that it had romance and mystery. I am also partial to baking, so that didn't hurt my liking of this book. If I had to say one negative thing about it, it was a bit on the cheesy side in some parts. All in all, a very enjoyable read.
Fun characters and story together kept my interest throughout. A little suspense thrown into this romance and a couple of nice subplots make for a strong 4-star story. The bakery descriptions got me salivating. I really liked it and would recommend it to anyone seeking a clean romance.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved it, I couldn't put it down, the story is fun, the characters have depth and it's a good clean easy read.
