Run of Luck #1

Twisted Luck

Rate this book
I’m Kaitlyn.

In my life, rarely are there dull moments. I seem to land myself in these…situations a lot. I am 25, and in college (yes, still!). I have just met the most gorgeous guy, Cole, in my math class. The only problem is that he is a little guarded. Just when I start to make progress with him, my crazy elderly neighbor Marge disappears after visiting some questionable dating sites. Who the hell has even heard of onlinebootycallhookups.com?!

Anyway, since my best friend and roommate Hailey and I have kind of adopted Marge, we join forces with her grandson Matt to help find her. Cole even decides to join in the hunt! Along the way, we cross paths with Ben - a creeper who might also be really dangerous.

Will I be able to keep us safe and out of trouble, find Marge, and land the guy? Or will my Twisted Luck screw everything up?

I am a mother, a wife, a substitute teacher and now a writer! I love to read and write. I discovered the world of indie books in 2012. Since then I have read so many great books and discovered lots of new favorite authors. I started my own book, Twisted Luck, somewhere along the way. It was published in July 2014 and while that is the only book I've written to completion today, I hope that will change in the future. Happy reading everyone!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Twisted Luck and also to know Julie Solorio. She is so funny, smart and just over all awesome so I knew I would be going on an adventure while reading her first book and I was 100% correct.

Kaityln is a shy twenty-five year old college student that has a slight crush on Cole, a guy that does not lack attention from other women on campus. She doesn't know that much about him really but when they do talk in math class they are friendly. There have been times when he seems to enjoy her company but she gets flustered around him. When they finally do spend time together outside of school it goes great until it doesn't....

Hailey is Kaitlyn's room at and best friend. They have the downstairs neighbor named Marge that is a little old lady with some feistiness. She is not your typical baking and knitting type of Grandma and she doesn't have family close so they all turn out to be great friends. The girls help her with internet dating and watch reality shows together....she is pretty much a 20 something in a 70 year old body.

When Kaityln gets the call that Marge is missing she is of course worried. She and Hailey felt bad that they haven't noticed that she has been gone for a few days but when her Grandson couldn't get ahold of her for those few days he made a missing persons report. What Hailey did not expect was that when she finally met Marge's grandson that things would get interesting to say the least.

Cole has to go out of town but when the search continues he decides to meet up with all of them to find Marge and this takes them on an adventure and also a way to get to know Kaitlyn even more. To Kaitlyn, Cole is mysterious, she knows he is sweet and sexy as hell but other than that she doesn't know much. As they go on this crazy ride she will get deeper into what Cole is hiding and who he really is. The four of them go through so many laughs, sadness and even have to deal a creeper.

I haven't laughed so much in a book in a long time. Kaitlyn reminds me of myself in a lot of ways, I don't think I am as funny but her inner thoughts are some of the same. The reference to music and TV were awesome and I understood all of them. This is a lighter read and I loved it. Just hilarious, sweet and with some mystery. Can't wait for the next one!

Quotes:

I also catch a few glimpses of her "profile" where, under hobbies, she listed tweaking, dropping it like it's hot, and the horizontal mambo. This woman is certifiably insane. I might have to sabotage her cable or something.

When Bruno Mars started singing about hot gorilla sex I may have gotten a little turned on and squirmy in my seat.

If you like a book full of quirky characters and full belly laughs as well as a bit of mystery than Twisted Luck is the book for you. This fantastic debut novel by author Julie Solorio was absolutely adorable.

Kaitlyn is your average 25 year old making her way through college. Studying, spending time with her BFF and roommate Hailey and crushing on her cutie classmate Cole, everything is going great for her. That is, until Marge happened....... Marge is the older woman who lives in the apartment below Kaitlyn and Hailey. Both girls have become very fond on Marge and spend time looking after her since she has no family close by. Everything is moving along smoothly until Marge decides that she is done with the single life and needs to find herself a man. Love knows no age, right? Anyway ... Marge's foray into the on-line dating world doesn't go quite as planned and its now up to Kaitlyn and Hailey to fix the mess that Marge has left in her wake. Along the way there is adventure, mystery, a villain, some seriously hilarious moments and even a few love connections.

Like I said Twisted Luck was really fun to read. The characters were so full of personality and each had their own quirkiness. Marge is the type of woman that you can't help but love yet at the same time cringe whenever she opens her mouth. With absolutely no filter and spending way too much time watching reality t.v, she has a knack for coming up with the most bizarre one-liners. Kaitlyn and Hailey may come across as immature at times but it is more charming that annoying. The side story between Hailey and Marge's grandson Matt was also a nice addition and helped round out the storyline. I also loved that you get varying POVs from several of the characters which was great and definielty helped to form a connection with each.

All in all, Twisted Luck was a really good, well written debut novel and I can't wait to read more from Julie in the future :)

Kaitlyn is a 25 year old college student. She is a little removed from college life since she is an older student. She lives with her best friend Hailey, and has the hots for Cole, a fellow student and study group member from her math class. Her downstairs neighbor is an elderly woman named Marge who Kaitlyn and Hailey have grown close to as they help her navigate modern electronics and other things. It seems that Cole and Hailey are finally going to start spending some real time together when Marge goes missing, and Kaitlyn realizes that Cole is hiding some pretty big secrets.

If you are a fan of author Tara Sivec, or other authors who can combine reality and ridiculous situations in ways that are highly entertaining, you will likely enjoy this book. The story is charming, funny, sexy, dangerous, and serious at times. Kaitlyn has a tendency to embarrass herself in a variety of ways that makes it easy to like and connect with her. Even though it takes us a while to get to know Cole, once we do, he is an easy guy to root for. There isn't a lot of development of some of the peripheral characters, but I think that is where this series will have room to expand and grow. The sex scenes aren't explicit, but it is easy to feel the heat and strong chemistry between Kaitlyn and Cole. This was an enjoyable read, and I wouldn't hesitate to continue with this series. 3.5 stars.

What a great story.
Witty characters, quirky banter and just enough suspense to make it all pull together.
I had to opportunity to beta read this, and I am honored to say I am very proud of Julie for what she has done with her story.
This story is full of Twisted Luck!

Sometimes I keep myself in a little box in my obsessive love of the types of books I read. Twisted Luck is outside my box and I absolutely loved it. I laughed out loud while reading and sent excerpts as texts to friends to show them how funny something in the book was. I definitely recommend this book and I am sure you will love the dynamic of this group of characters.

I love Kaitlyn!! She is ridiculous and has a tendency to land herself in socially awkward land mines. Not only is this hilarious to read, but for me, I can totally relate since I seem to love to put my ‘awkward’ foot in my ‘act before I think’ mouth. Kaitlyn isn’t riddled with secrets and drama; she’s just a scatter brained, often socially inept girl, who can make me laugh like no other. Her inner monologues and gift of finding herself in the craziest of situations; wondering how did I get here and which wrong step did I take are literary gold.

Excerpt:
I wasn’t even able to make eye contact with these morons until my second cup of coffee and until I was about half way into my Moons Over My Hammy. Then for some reason I couldn’t remember why I hated them all so much to begin with, which made them all break out into hysterics all over again.

The group of characters in this book is the perfect fictional little family. Hailey is the peanut butter to Kaitlyn’s jelly and the Thelma to her Louise, a hilarious duo for your reading pleasure. Marge is a train wreck. She is a disaster that you can’t and don’t want to look away from. Her crazy antics have you doubling over in laughter. Throw Cole and Matt in the mix and you get swoon worthy boyfriends to love, to round out this phenomenal group of characters.

Excerpt:
I woke up feeling hot and claustrophobic. I realized that Cole was basically pinning me under him with a leg over my lap and an arm over my chest. When I read books in which this happened to the main character it was always written as cute or sexy, and the girls usually basked in the delightful sensation of being pinned under their lover. That was total bullshit. I was sweating so much I was sure our skin was going to create a sucking sound when he finally pried himself off of me. His leg was pushing my bladder down in the most unfortunate way, and I was pretty sure that wet feeling in my ear was my own damn drool. Suffice it to say, nothing about this moment was cute or sexy.

I LOVE this passage. From my point of view I feel Julie Solorio was paying homage to the dirty books we love, while making note of the non-fictional reality of the things we read in a humors manner.

The end of the novel takes a little bit of a twist, deviating from the light story line and humor. Kaitlyn learns that life can be scary and not all rainbows and sunshine; telling the story of a young girl learning to navigate life once things are not the sheltered world it was previously. This demonstrated the transformation of a young girl finding out the world can be a dark place but she needs to find a way to continue living.

Julie Solorio writes beautifully in this novel, bringing humor and a story of friendship, crazy antics, and the transformation of a girl dealing with the dark in the world. I am beyond glad I was gifted this book and highly recommend it to all of you reading this. Check it out; I don’t believe you will be disappointed. You will laugh, relate, and wish you had a friendship like Kaitlyn and Hailey’s, a crazy neighbor like Marge, and boys to drool over like Cole and Matt.

If you're looking for a funny, sweet book with an adventure this is your kind of book!! The writing is great, the story has a little bit of everything: romance, humor, suspense, steam and hot guys! Kaitlyn is a college student who lives with her best friend Hailey and has a major crush on Cole. They have an older neighbor that gets herself into some trouble and it's road trip time! I laughed outloud more than a few times! Cole is hot and Kaitlyn is effing hilarious (she reminds me of one of my friends!) Hailey is the best friend that everyone wishes the had! While searching for Marge we find out that Cole has a secret and we meet Marge's very sexy grandson! I can't wait to read more from Julie!

Cole came over to where I was standing and reached past me to turn the music down, and by down I mean off. Well wasn't that just the last damn straw! How dare you cut off 'Nsync??

Hmmm...how to bring it up without being totally obvious?
"Will your girlfriend be watching with you? Oh No! That was so obvious and embarrassing!

Twisted Luck by Julie Solorio is a quirky tale of two crazy roommates and their crazy old lady neighbor. It took me a little while to get into this novel but I was fully hooked by about 40% in and that first 40% was still entertaining. The pop culture references are a favorite of mine. If the author mentions things in a book that I am also into it makes the book more personal, you know?

Kaitlyn and Hailey are a funny pair of best friends that may have just met their match in Cole and Matt. If you are looking for something sweet and funny with little suspense twisted through then this is the book for you.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review

This is a cute, funny, quirky book! I believe what or who pulls it all together is Marge. She is this firecracker old lady that lives next door to Kaitlyn and Hailey.

The girls look at Marge as a grandmother type. So when Marge ends up missing the girls find it their mission to help find her. Kaitlyn gets some help from Cole a man in one of her classes, with whom she is totally crushing on and Matt (Marges grandson) comes to town to help find her too.

Marge's disappearance isn't the only thing yapping in this book. Cole also has a story of his own. And the girls do their own PI work on him.

I laughed a lot while reading this. So if you want something quick and funny with a little of suspense this is your book.

I am really glad that I read this book. I loved the characters from the very beginning. I am not going to lie. So much of what Kaitlyn thought is stuff that goes through my head. I mean she is ridiculous and hilarious. I mean she is even allergic to tomatoes like I am (and it would be my like to finally get the date and have to go to the hospital). I really like Cole. He was super sweet and you have to love that he cares so much about family. I really like that the characters all had a little bit of background. Cole and Kaitlyn were in class together for awhile before they started to date. There were a lot of really funny parts but there were some serious issues.

I am giving this book 4.4 stars out of 5. I think you will enjoy it.

I received this book for an honest review. I have to absolutely say that this was a fun book to read. You will fall in love with the characters quickly. First you have Kaitlyn and Hailey who are best friends and roommates with their quirky neighbor Marge who is an older lady who has kind of adopted the girls. Marge is a laugh riot with her little escapades.

Kaitlyn is in college and meets Cole in her math class and starts crushing on him hard. Hailey (also in college) is falling for Matt who is Marge's grandson. This book was just a lot of fun to read. Enjoyable little escapades all through the book.

A nice quick, fun read..

I LOVED this book, it was so refreshing! This book was laugh out loud funny yet suspenseful all at once. The characters were very likeable (well, except the one we were meant to hate!)and had you really rooting for them. I loved the friendships portrayed and the hot chemistry too! I am kinda glad that I don't have a Marge figure in my life but boy was she hilarious!! I can't wait for book 2 now!

I enjoyed this. I cant tell you how many times I laughed out loud. I enjoyed the characters, they were quirky and this story had some mystery to it.

Kaitlyn is a 25 year old college student. She spends her time hanging with her best friend & her roommate Hailey, studying and secretly crushing on her classmate Cole.
Cole is appreciated by most women on campus, he is a hottie. They share a math class together and with Kaitlyn being shy, she gets flustered easily around him and tends to not talk all that much. She doesn't know much about him but their talks are always friendly. They start spending sometime together and then enters Marge.

Marge is Hailey and Kaitlyn's neighbor. She isn't your typical grandma. She is feisty, sweet, loving and like a 70 year old woman in a 20 years old body. These three become great friends. They sit around watching reality shows together, helping Marge with the newest tech gadgets and Marge decides its time to start "loving" again and starts to do Internet dating.

Cole and Kaityln are on a date and everything is pointing to them finally spending time together and while on the date, Kaityln gets a call that Marge is missing. Her and Hailey feel guilty because they hadn't noticed her gone. This is where Marge's sexy grandson Matt walks in. I will just say when they met Matt, things start getting interesting. Cole has to go out of town but meets up with them later to help search for Marge. This road trip is great because if gives her and cole a chance to get to know one another better and you get to the bottom of why Cole is so mysterious. The four of them have many laughs, discover one another, dive into some mystery and sadness.
I laughed so many times reading this. I am shocked this is a debut novel. Well done Ms. Solorio!

Libro divertido y rápido de leer. La historia es entretenida y a ratos misteriosa. Pero, no me gustó la forma en que la escritora llevó la historia, a veces omitió mucho diálogo lo que debilitó las relaciones que se generaron en la trama.
